Goloff’s options Last August, Mary Goloff surprised just about everybody by

announcing, during a City Council meeting, that she was stepping down as mayor of Chico. As the CN&R reported (“Musical chairs: Mayoral switch tops contentious meeting,” Aug. 8), she explained that she had “a health condition” that would render her unable to handle the mayor’s busy schedule.

Since then she’s been absent from council meetings five times, including the last three meetings, and is expected to be absent from the April 15 meeting, as well. (She has said she will return for the May 6 meeting.)

This is the third time Goloff has taken an extended medical leave from her position. She missed four consecutive meetings in March, April and May of 2012 and two in November and December of 2013. According to our count, by the end of this month she will have missed 11 meetings since March 2012.

We don’t fault her for this. There is no blame in needing extended medical care, and Goloff has been a valuable member of the council during her two terms. But her health problems have made her unable not only to serve as mayor, but also to be an effective council member.

The city is at a critical stage in the process of solving its financial problems, and the upcoming budget sessions are sure to be difficult and exhausting. When Goloff returns for the May 6 meeting, she will need to convince her constituents that her health condition is under control and that she is fully capable of continuing in office until her term ends, on Dec. 2.

If she cannot do that, she should step down and let the rest of the council members appoint a replacement. The community that has entrusted her with its most important elected position deserves no less. Ω

through social media—without giving advice or judgment. My friend listened to me over the telephone for years, and said, “I don’t always understand what you are going through, but I am always here for you.”

Another way you can help is to ask what you can do to give immediate relief to the family. Offer to do small, specific tasks.

Bring over a dinner that fits the child’s diet restrictions, ask for their grocery list before you go shopping, do a family’s mountain of laundry for that week, or offer child care.

No one should have to raise a child with diverse abilities without help. Those families need others to help lighten the load on their journey.

Road to disaster The effects of climate change are becoming increasingly evident.

The oceans are acidifying, extreme weather is becoming the norm, the polar ice caps are melting, and so is the Arctic tundra’s permafrost, releasing vast amounts of the worst greenhouse gas: methane.

Now comes a new report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change warning of increased strains on water and food supplies, and subsequent consequences.

Compiled by more than 300 authors and editors from 70 countries, aided by 436 contributors and more than 1,800 experts and government reviewers, the document, Climate Change 2014: Impacts, Adaptation and Vulnerability, is the most comprehensive report of its kind yet released.

In its first report, in 2007, the IPCC demonstrated that climate change was taking place everywhere on Earth, in every ocean and on every continent. The current report, its second, goes further by outlining the threats to global security resulting from climate change’s impacts. The news isn’t good.

Drought, desertification, the death of coral reefs, declining fish populations, soil degradation and extreme weather are some of the immediate consequences of climate change. As the report states, they likely will lead to others, including resource wars, migrations and famine that international organizations will find impossible to prevent and extremely difficult to ameliorate.

There are many potentially worthwhile responses to these challenges, beginning with switching to renewable energy. Fundamentally, however, the problem is an almost willful ignorance on our part. We refuse to acknowledge that life on Earth is a vast ecological system in which every part, from ocean plankton to giant sequoias, is inextricably linked to every other part. We can’t go on plundering the planet as if it’s a storehouse of resources that exist only for humans’ benefit. As the IPCC report suggests, that way leads to disaster. Ω

Suprises Well, color me shocked. Pleasantly surprised would be more accurate.

When News Editor Tom Gascoyne told me the Butte County Board of Supervisors voted to move forward on a fracking ban throughout the county on Tuesday, I did a double-take. My reaction was something like, “You’re kidding. How did that happen?” I’ve said this before, but very little surprises me. This did.

Word about the ban traveled fast—and far beyond Chico. By early afternoon the same day, I received an email from the Washington, D.C.-based Food & Water Watch, an environmental nonprofit, announcing the supes’ decision. The group noted that the Los Angeles City Council moved forward on a similar moratorium back in February. L.A. stands to be the first oil-producing city in the state to approve such a ban, and there’s a lot at stake down south. The city is home to about 4,800 oil and gas wells, 1,880 of which are active.

Locally, there are an estimated 26 active gas wells.

There are another couple hundred abandoned wells. None of them are believed to be fracked. But that doesn’t mean no danger exists. As we know from last week’s cover story on water conservation (see “Let’s get serious: Butte County must start curbing water use … or else,” April 3), every bit of our drinking water is groundwater. Contamination by fracking could have calamitous results.

What’s most surprising about the local move to establish a moratorium is how it comes from a conservative-majority Board of Supervisors. Staunch conservative Supervisor Larry Wahl cast the lone dissenting vote.

So, what happened? As you’ll read in Gascoyne’s story, Steve Lambert has a very personal and tragic connection to the effects of groundwater contamination— namely the death of his cousin, a resident of Hinkley.

That’s the small Southern California town of Erin Brockovich fame that has very nearly become a ghost town. About 20 years ago PG&E, which used chromium in its natural-gas operations there, was fingered as the culprit for polluting the region’s groundwater. Decades after the utility giant settled with residents there, the pollution has not been contained. In fact, it’s spread. The plume is about 6 miles long and 4 miles wide, or 24 square miles. That’s an area slightly smaller than the size of Chico: 27 square miles.

One of the other surprises recently was the liberalmajority Chico City Council’s vote last week to hire an out-of-town law firm to represent the city. No offense to the City of Industry-based Alvarez-Glasman & Colvin, but it’s hard to imagine that out-of-towners will hold the same level of commitment to Chico and its well-being as someone with ties to this community. Needless to say, we’ll be keeping our eyes on this new partnership.

The last surprise around these parts will include, for the first time in a long time, some changes in the pages of the CN&R. For starters, you’ll be introduced to a couple of new voices. We will debut a new columnist in two weeks, followed by another the week thereafter. Stay tuned.

Thoughts on conservation Re “Let’s get serious” (Cover feature, by CN&R staff, April 3): Building more dams as the answer to our state’s water shortage just perpetuates the problematic ways we use water, postponing the day when we’re forced to do the hard work of conservation. California already has more than 1,400 dams and nearly that many reservoirs. How many more dams will be enough?

We can never engineer enough water storage to compensate for prolonged drought and the loss of winter snowpack. As taxpayers, do we really want to spend billions of dollars on indirect subsidies to inefficient southland and westlands agribusiness, who grow thirsty crops where they’ve already depleted their own groundwater and ruined their own soils?

Do we want to green-light more sprawling development and abet the loss of the prime ag-lands that remain?

This isn’t a farmers-versus-environmentalists issue, or a north-versus-south issue, or a people-versus-fish issue—this is a “face the future” issue. We have to fundamentally change the way we use water, not scramble for destructive and overpriced short-term fixes.

Thank you for continuing to publish articles on the critical issue of water conservation. However, neither your main article nor the accompanying “Ten ways to conserve” mention the single most effective change any one person can make to conserve water: decreasing his or her consumption of meat products.

Estimates of the water required for meat production vary by type of meat. It’s also dependent on where the source lives. The most aggressive interpretations estimate that the water required to produce 1 pound of grain-fed beef is 2,400 gallons, or six months’ worth of 10-minute showers. The numbers for grass-fed beef, for chicken, or other forms of livestock are lower, and are subject to argument and interpretation on both sides. By contrast, a pound of potatoes requires 133 gallons of water to produce.

Whether liberal or conservative, dedicated Paleo carvivore or tofu eater, anyone who sincerely cares about our fragile planet and its diminishing water supplies should Google “environmental impact of meat production” and make the dietary changes—however large or small—that they can, based on what they learn.

Re “Entitled to a voice” (Newslines, by Howard Hardee, April 3): I have received funds and services from the California Victim Compensation Program, and I found Howard Hardee’s article to be very informative on the workings of victims’ resources. The highlight after a crime is prosecuting the offender, but in my experience, the victim is left with a lot more to take care of than the criminal. Three years later, I am still requesting days off of work to attend court, all due to a complete stranger.

CalVCP has helped cushion that blow. I was reluctant to take their help at first, but I am really glad that I did. Being the victim of a violent crime is hard on its own, but it is a lot harder if you try to do it alone. I am grateful to hear that Donna Teifer’s family was able to make good use of CalVCP’s assistance as I was able to do, and may their hearts rest easy knowing that justice is being served.

They love the market Re “Fooling with the market” (Newslines, by Tom Gascoyne, April 3): For the love of health and health care dollars, can’t we find it in our collective moral consciousness to promote healthful living in our community? If not a moral issue, it certainly is an economic one.

The health benefits of fresh fruits and veggies have been researched ad nauseam. Our elected officials who are looking for ways to save our tax dollars need to understand the long-term value of the farmers’ market. The problem, as I see it, is one of separation of payer from receiver. That is, the people who have the power to reduce health care costs are not the same ones who can make money from closing the market down.

The business community, who cry about the cost of their employee health care, would do well to turn to the farmers’ market for help. It’s good for public health, good for the community and good 6 CN&R April 10, 2014

My letter is both to advocate for the market’s franchise agreement to be resolved by the Chico City Council without further delay, and to advocate for all parties to take the higher road and not devolve into an us-versus-them mentality.

We cultivate awareness and education of healthy food production; eating, preparing and preserving healthy foods; and gaining access to local in-season foods at farmers’ markets. Supporting the farmers’ market grows our local economy through the multiplier effect.

Our beloved Chico Certified Farmers’ Market is on the verge of an eviction by the Chico City Council. I ask the community to stand up and take notice by signing a petition to save our farmers’ market.

We are fans and supporters of the farmers’ market—right where it is. When we moved to Chico a bit over 10 years ago, the Saturday market quickly became a fixture on our calendar. We have come to know many and appreciate all of the dedicated and hardworking farmers who have stalls there.

Banning the market from its home seems entirely misguided. In our experience, most of the people who throng to the market think it is in a perfect spot.

We also love and support downtown and patronize the businesses there. But we think that claims by a few niche businesses that the market hurts them because of parking issues indicate more that they have a business problem than that the market is a problem.

The only proposed downtown alternative site we are aware of (the nearby municipal parking lot) would allow fewer vendors with no important benefits.

We support the current ballot initiative to let the voters decide where the market should be.

Bagging on bag ban Re “Getting personal” (Newslines,

by Melissa Daugherty, April 3): Flying a sustainability expert from Germany to a conference at Chico State consumes 1,232 pounds of jet fuel. In contrast, 102,000 disposable grocery bags weigh 1,232 pounds. In the first case, the hydrocarbons are all spewed into the atmosphere. In the case of the bags, they are mostly sequestered in the landfill for 1,000 years.

We need to use science and reason to save the world, not just feelgood regulations. Reusable grocery bags require laundering, which consumes water, sends detergent into the sewer plant (which drains into the Sacramento River), and utilizes power from fossil-fuel power plants. Adding 10 minutes to my workload each week processing reusable bags is taking a full day off my year from doing more useful things. Like advocating for compact urban form, renewable energy, humanpowered transportation, and hiring local sustainability experts instead of ones from the other side of the planet.

As new president of 1078 Gallery’s board of directors, Erin Wade is coming in at a tough time. The city Finance Committee recently recommended cutting arts funding significantly, meaning less money to keep galleries like 1078 afloat.

Chico Police say a string of shootings in the neighborhoods south of Chico State over the weekend appear to be gang-related.

According to Chico Police, at 10:46 p.m. on Saturday (April 5), an apartment complex at West First and Klondike Court was the scene of a drive-by shooting. A shot was fired from a red Toyota sedan into a crowd at that location. No one was hurt. About an hour later, however, a 21-year-old man was shot near the corner of Third and Broadway. He was hit in the torso but his wound was not life-threatening. Witnesses reported hearing a gang slur shouted at the time of the shooting and described two suspects, both Hispanic men.

Then, at about 2:40 p.m. on Sunday, two ski-mask-wearing assailants jumped out of a black SUV and began firing at a trailer park along the 1400 block of Nord Avenue.

Chico Police pulled over a vehicle matching that description and arrested Jasper Frank Sandoval, 22; Edgar Olivar, 19; and a 16-yearold boy. Two semi-automatic firearms found on the streets the SUV traveled link the suspects to the Nord Avenue shooting.

GRANTS HELP THE HOMELESS

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) announced this week that it was giving out $253.6 million in grants to 815 homeless housing and service programs in California, including $504,134 to Butte County.

The grants include $118,359 for the Esplanade House Shelter, $54,974 for the Esplanade House Transitional Housing and $46,754 for the Esplanade House Permanent Housing Program. The Avenida Apartments Supportive Housing Program on The Esplanade received $61,882 and the county’s Homeless Management Information System, which keeps track of the number of homeless, received $107,000 The grants are part of HUD’s Continuum of Care Program, according to a HUD press release.

PHARMACIST-TURNED-GUMSHOE

A local pharmacist who noticed a pattern of excessively large prescriptions for a narcotic triggered an investigation that led to a Chico woman’s arrest for allegedly falsifying prescriptions.

That woman, 37-year-old Cassie Lawley, of Chico, worked at a local doctor’s office, according to a Chico Police Department press release. When the pharmacist contacted that office, he was told by an employee that the prescriptions were legitimate, but that the doctor was unavailable for comment. Later, someone claiming to be the doctor returned the pharmacist’s call and reaffirmed that the prescriptions were real.

Still suspicious, the pharmacist tracked down the doctor’s personal number and was able to confirm that the prescriptions for roughly 540 Norco pills were fake. Further investigations revealed that more than 15,000 pills had been obtained this way since November 2012.

Lawley faces charges of burglary and obtaining a controlled substance by fraud.

Arts, culture take a hit City looks to cut funding to local organizations

That’s where Team Chico comes in. As a collaboration between the Chamber of Commerce, the Downtown Chico Business Association, the city and other partners, its main focus is on providing services to local businesses. Nakamura recommended it receive $108,100.

When it comes to the library, which is slated to receive $100,000, Nakamura said, “I’ll take responsibility for that recommendation.

“Education is a way to enhance opportunities for jobs, and the library plays a critical role in education.”

In addition to budgetary concerns, though, Nakamura said there’s also a lack of city staff to administer the funds.

In the past few years, several positions have been eliminated, including that of arts coordinator.

“We’re trying to streamline, to do more with less,” Nakamura said. “It sounds cliché, but we just don’t have the resources anymore to staff and monitor these organizations in terms of the reporting requirements.”

Folks in the arts community

understand that the city is under a lot of financial pressure. But they’re worried that cutting arts funding will have a negative impact on Chico as a whole.

“I’m really concerned about the

organizations that are already doing a lot of fundraising,” said Muir Hughes, chair of the city Arts Commission. “The little bit of money they get from the city carries them through.”

She pointed to 1078 Gallery as a prime example. The nonprofit is a hotbed of arts activity, from visual art shows to theater performances to live music. But its focus is not on selling art, but rather on celebrating it. Because of that, income is minimal.

“Their primary mission is to serve Chico, not necessarily to sell a painting,” Hughes said.

Other organizations like Blue Room Theatre, which received $8,491 last year, and the Museum of Northern California Art, which is trying to get off the ground, also will struggle, she added.

“Some are in better shape than others,” Hughes said. “But I don’t know if they’ll all make it.”

Erin Wade recently took the reins as president of the 1078 Gallery’s board of directors. Without city funding, which it uses primarily for promoting shows and other events, 1078 will have to get creative. As a worst-case scenario, she said they’d look at relocating because rent is their biggest expense. But that would affect more than just the group of volunteers who run the gallery and the artists who display and perform there.

“If we have to close here, it will affect everyone else on this block,” Wade said.

Hughes echoed that sentiment.

“It may seem like no big deal right now, but there will be areas of blight where galleries once were,” she said.

During last year’s budget talks, the city approved spending $5,250 on a survey to determine the economic impact of the arts on our community. That survey, which will be conducted by an organization called Americans for the Arts, is scheduled to begin this summer. Hughes and Wade question the timing, but Nakamura said it might be just what the city needs come next year when determining whether to reinstate arts funding.

“Hopefully it will provide us with additional background to incentivize different determinations for funding programs and services in the future,” he said.

The proposed funding cuts affect

more than just arts organizations. Local groups that provide public services also will lose out on city funds they’ve become accustomed to receiving. Last year, Rape Crisis was allotted $17,796; Innovative Health Care Services received $19,693; and $14,410 went to the Chico Community Children’s Center.

“If the city proceeds as is planned, the situation for the Nature Center will not be sustainable,” said Caitlin Reilly, executive director of the Chico Creek Nature Center. “We will have to make dramatic changes, and potentially even turn the new building back over to the city.”

Wade and Hughes worry that so many organizations vying for such a small amount of money will turn into a negative situation for everyone.

“We don’t want to be fighting among ourselves,” Wade said.

From the city’s perspective, there’s not much to be done. The Finance Committee’s recommendation still must come before the City Council, however, for final approval. That likely will happen in May, Nakamura said.

“Unfortunately, I believe they [the organizations] are going to be adversely affected. There will be a reduction in services and programs,” Nakamura said.

“We’ve done the same here in the city.

They, like we did, will have to regroup and start thinking outside the box.”

It’s clear some are already doing just that. Local arts advocates are working on establishing the nonprofit Chico Arts Foundation to support art in the community. The 1078 Gallery is looking at other ways to boost revenue, including holding more events and fundraisers. And the Nature Center is looking at other strategic partnerships that would allow it to continue to offer programs and services for the public and the park.

“It’s going to come down to more individual support—people will have to step up and support the things they want to see in this town,” Wade said.

“Chico is a great community,” Reilly added. “But people don’t stay in cities because there are police and fire departments—they stay because of the quality of life.” Ω

Hit the road, frack County supervisors move to outlaw controversial gas extraction method he controversial practice of hydraulic fracTreserves turing to extract underground oil and gas is well on the way to getting banned

in Butte County. On Tuesday (April 8), the Board of Supervisors voted in favor of moving forward on crafting a zoning ordinance, as recommended by the county water commission, that would require a use permit for the practice that is more commonly known as fracking.

That practice has been linked to water and soil contamination and a local initiative effort to ban the method is currently in the works.

But Butte County Supervisor Steve Lambert proposed and then made the motion for the county to ban fracking because of the environmental degradation with which it is associated.

There are 26 active natural gas wells in the county and about 200 abandoned gas wells. County Water and Resource Conservation Director Paul Gosselin told the board that there is no reported fracking currently underway in Butte County and that the 26 active gas wells supply about .002 percent of the state’s overall production.

“In this region, the geology we have isn’t really conducive to fracking practices,” Gosselin said.

The vast majority of fracking occurs in Kern and eastern Los Angeles counties, he said, but as the practice has increased in the past four years, concerns have been raised statewide.

That concern led to the passage last year of Senate Bill 4, which requires that if the owner or operator of an existing, new or

abandoned gas well wants to frack, a permit needs to be issued by the state Division of Oil, Gas and Geothermal Resources. Critics say the law is much too lenient.

The supes’ vote came on the same day another bill, Senate Bill 1132, passed through its first stop in a senate committee. The bill would place a statewide moratorium on fracking until a study is completed and the practice is determined safe.

During the public-comment portion of the local meeting, the vast majority of speakers opposed fracking. The first one, Loretta Torres, was the exception.

Torres said she has a gas well in Glenn County that is 5,000 feet deep, has been in production for the past seven years and is operated safely by a company out of Colorado. She said any effluent escaping from the well is placed into containers on the property.

“They are just really on top of this,” she said. “I think a lot of this scariness in the nation is from hydraulic fracturing that was done like, say, in Pennsylvania.”

Torres was followed by Robyn DiFalco, executive director of the Butte Environmental Council. “A year ago many of us did not know fracking was taking place so extensively in California and we started to wonder about the concern here locally,” she said.

“The point I’d like to make today is that there is an imminent threat from fracking in our region and Butte County.”

She said many of the 200 inactive wells have the potential to be stimulated for production via fracking.

When the supervisors took up the discussion, Lambert mentioned the environmental disaster that had taken place in the tiny Mojave Desert town of Hinkley, which led to a total of $628 million in settlements from Pacific Gas & Electric and the basis of the

Lambert said his cousin had died as a result of exposure to hexavalent chromium, which was used in PG&E cooling towers that the company employed in the transmission of natural gas beginning in 1952 and ending in 1966.

“Common-sense-wise, we are disrupting things if we chip away at our foundation all day long. Sooner or later our house is going to fall down,” Lambert said.

Then he explained how the industrial use of chemicals had affected him personally.

“As you all know, I’m a pretty conservative guy,” he said, “but I think common sense steps all over that stuff and says, ‘Hey, listen, we all live in this house, and if you take the foundation away, we are just going to crumble. I would favor, in all honesty, a ban.”

He then made a motion to direct staff to develop an ordinance to ban fracking. The motion passed 4-1 with Supervisor Larry Wahl the lone holdout.

After the meeting, DiFalco said she was happy with the outcome.

“We are very excited and a little bit surprised,” she said. “When we began the effort, it seemed like for the supervisors a ban would not be politically acceptable. We had met with the supervisors over the past year to help them understand the practice.”

She said Gosselin had asked her to head up the effort to draft the language of the proposed ordinance.

Joni Stellar, who is one of the activists behind the initiative process, said the effort to gather 7,605 valid voter signatures would continue. She pointed out that Supervisor Doug Teeter had mentioned at the meeting that the board needs the vote of the people to really ban the practice of fracking.

“The will of the people,” she said, “is basically the rule of the land.”

from the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta has environmentalists and fisheries advocates outraged.

The move came on April 1 after several politicians—including Sen. Dianne Feinstein and six San Joaquin Valley congressmen— urged the federal government to allow more freshwater than is normally allowed to be pumped from the two large pumps near Tracy and into San Joaquin Valley for use by farmers in that parched region.

But critics say the Central Valley’s chinook salmon are seriously threatened by the pumping increase, which has boosted the volume of water being drawn from the Delta from 1,500 cubic feet per second to 6,500. “[The state’s Department of Water Resources and the federal Bureau of Reclamation] are apparently willing to sacrifice the future of the Sacramento River’s salmon runs for the sake of a few export crops, like lemons and almonds,” said Jim Brobeck, water policy analyst with the Chico-based group AquAlliance.

Brobeck and other environmentalists say the action violates environmental laws that strictly curtail water exports from the Delta during the spring to protect chinook salmon.

“By order of the Endangered Species Act and the Clean Water Act, government water managers are supposed to make sure there’s enough water in the ecosystem before they start sending it away to farmers,” Brobeck said. “That is the priority.”

Juvenile chinooks are currently migrating down the San Joaquin and Sacramento rivers on their journey to the ocean. The young salmon may be at increased risk of being sucked into the pumps.

John McManus, the executive director of the Golden Gate Salmon Association, an environmental group representing Bay Jim Brobeck of AquAlliance doesn’t mince words about recent Delta pumping increases. He points to the state and federal authorities that are making San Joaquin Valley crops a priority over the salmon population.

Area salmon fishermen, says these fish—many born in hatcheries— could be drawn by the powerful flow of diverted water through a channel called Georgiana Slough.

This channel leads into the maze of backwaters of the interior Delta.

“That’s a place where most salmon don’t find their way out of if they get lost in there,” McManus said.

He says the increase in outflow from the two major Delta pumps violates a federal law passed in 2009 specifically to protect chinook salmon. The law, called a biological opinion, takes effect each year on April 1.

“One of the provisions of that law said that pumping cannot exceed the inflow rate of the San Joaquin River,” McManus said. He explained that this law aims to protect juvenile salmon and steelhead swimming down the San Joaquin as they follow the current toward the sea. If the water pumps are operating at too high a power, the river water carrying these fish can be drawn off-course, along with the small fish. He adds that Sacramento River salmon are also threatened by the pumping.

“But they’ve thrown that provision out the window,” McManus said.

During a media conference call on April 2, Mark Cowin, director

of the state Department of Water Resources, said this legal loophole was created to “take advantage of the water runoff we’re seeing from recent storms.” The National Marine Fisheries Service, which enforces laws protecting salmon and other species, granted permission to loosen pumping restrictions that normally would have taken effect on April 1, Cowin told reporters.

Bob Clarke, an assistant fisheries program manager with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, says the Coleman National Fish Hatchery released about 4 million young salmon into the waters of Battle Creek, a tributary of the Sacramento, last Friday (April 4).

He says juvenile salmon take between one and three weeks to migrate downstream from the hatchery to the Delta.

By the time the fish get that far, the Delta water pumping may have been reduced back to normal levels—meaning the fish might not be in danger.

But Brobeck says the agencies managing the Central Valley’s beleaguered salmon runs, which have declined over the years due largely to heavy pumping in the Delta, are failing to do their jobs.

He cites the “co-equal” goals mandated by the state of California that aim to protect fisheries as well as provide sufficient water for farmers.

“But that’s a total sham,” he said. “The farmers in the San Joaquin Valley are always given the priority.”

“The fastest growing career industry in the next 20 years will be working with older adults,” Sehrawat said. “If you want good jobs, that will be the No. 1 industry there for you—no matter what your major is.”

Prior to the industrial revolution,

Sehrawat explained, there was no such thing as retirement. In a society mostly based on agriculture, most American families lived and worked on farms, caring for elders together. When industrialization shifted the population to cities, families became more nuclear, and “we all started believing new is better than old,” Sehrawat said. “The older adults in our society lost that place of reverence, of having wisdom, of being a valuable part of the family.”

Now, due in large part to the post-World War II baby boom, there are proportionately more older adults in the United States than in previous generations, and the story is the same the world over. In 2012, about 11 percent of the world’s population—or 809 million people—were 65 years or older, according to the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs. That figure is projected to jump to 22 percent of the world’s population, or 2.03 billion people, by 2050. The aging trend is particularly relevant in Butte County; as of the last census, nearly 16 percent of Butte County residents were 65 years old or older.

So, what does all this mean for Chico State students entering the workforce?

Baby boomers control more than 70 percent of U.S. wealth and are notoriously freespending, purchasing more than half of consumer packaged goods. As they move into retirement, a massive industry catering to their desire to remain active members of their communities is emerging, Sehrawat said. She pointed to new apps that can transform old smartphones into remote security cameras for home monitoring systems as just one example of technology that will help older adults remain independent.

“Boomers are going to transform how we view aging,” she said. As it is, the widespread perception that most retirees are relegated to a quiet life in a nursing home simply isn’t true. In fact, only about 5 percent of people 65 years old or older live in nursing homes, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. “That means a lot of opportunities for us to think creatively,” Sehrawat said.

“What can I do for my grandmother, who lives in a different state and is more active than me?”

At the conclusion of Sehrawat’s presentation, she asked again what came to mind when students thought of aging. This time, the responses were much different: “opportunity,” “wisdom,” “enjoyment” and “freedom.”

EARTH WATCH CALIFORNIA CHARGES AHEAD

California lawmakers want to improve air quality by enhancing incentives for getting rid of older vehicles and for buying no- and lowemissions cars and trucks.

Earlier this month, the Senate Transportation & Housing Committee unanimously passed Senate Bill 1275, also known as the Charge Ahead California Initiative. It speeds up provisions of the Health & Safety Code to ensure funding is available for the buy-back program—which allows California residents to sell their older, high-emissions vehicles in order to take them off the road.

The reason for the initiative, according to the text of the bill, includes the facts that California has seven of the 10 most polluted cities in the United States and vehicle emissions are the No. 1 pollutant. SB 1275 must be passed by a majority vote before going into effect.

DON’T CHUCK THAT TOILET!

Researchers in Spain, England and Brazil have developed a technique to turn your broken toilet, sink or bathtub into eco-friendly cement, according to sustainable design site Inhabi tat.com. So, you can forget about hauling your old bathroom ceramics out to the dump.

The researchers are still in the testing phase, and they’ve experimented with various mixtures, at least one of which includes corn husks instead of chemicals, making the resultant cement from 100 percent recycled materials. Another mixture uses red clay bricks. Both of those, as well as the more traditional chemical mixture, have created stronger cement than those currently used.

CLEANING UP BUTTE COUNTY

During the last weekend of March, a group of 37 volunteers headed out to make Butte County a prettier place to be. It was the Butte County Resource Conservation District’s second trail and river cleanup event, which they scheduled on Cesar Chavez Day weekend to celebrate the leader’s commitment to community service.

The event was a success, organizers said in a press release. The Resource Conservation District was joined by other local groups, including volunteers from the California Conservation Corps and Chico High School students. In all, they collected 30 bags of trash and waste from 3 miles along the Feather River in Oroville.

Tinvincible superhero. The tiny crustaceans live in vernal pools, those seasonal he fairy shrimp is a kind of

wetlands that are actually dry most of the year, throughout California. Yet, despite inconsistent habitat, the fairy shrimp survives.

“You can drop [fairy shrimp] into boiling water, and turn the heat off, and that water is 212 degrees, and they will swim away,” laughed Bob Holland, geobotanical phenomenologist and a leading researcher on Central Valley vernal pools.

“Somebody put them in liquid nitrogen, left them there overnight, and then put them in water the next day, and they swam away! They’re absolutely incredibly resilient animals,” he added.

Holland recounted tales of 200-year-old fairy shrimp eggs hatching, and of NASA leaving them in space for seven years to be exposed to space radiation and solar flares, and discovering them alive upon return. “It just makes you shake your head in awe,” he admitted. “There’s not an organism that grows in vernal pools that doesn’t have something like that working for them.”

The creatures living in and around vernal pools have evolutionarily prepared themselves for the slim window of spring rain-filled puddles, followed by months of brutal dry heat. Those fairy shrimp, the common name for several species that live in vernal pools, swim in the short-lived puddles, and lay eggs before the heat dries up the water.

Here in Chico, they live in the vernal pools just east of Marsh Junior High on Humboldt Road, in what many people con-

sider empty lots. That 42.5-acre parcel, privately owned with a conservation easement that is maintained by the Chico-based California Open Lands land trust, is called Meriam Park Preserve, and is currently flush with flowers like tidy tips, clarkia, frying pan poppies, and Butte County meadowfoam, an endangered flower. Like the ecosystem they inhabit, the creatures endemic to vernal pools are decreasing in numbers; several of the fairy shrimp species are federally listed as endangered.

So what is the fairy shrimp’s kryptonite?

“Vernal pools are so unique to our state—a precious remnant of a landscape that was so much larger,” said Barbara Vlamis, executive director of AquAlliance and organizer of the event. The conference, held every four years since the mid-1990s, will bring together students, academics, researchers, consultants and government agencies, and is open to the public.

Holland has been tracking Central

Valley vernal pools since the 1970s, when he mapped the roughly 1.2 million acres of pools scattered throughout the valley. His initial mapping was the first of its kind and has served as a baseline for Central Valley vernal pools ever since. His most recent survey in 2012, the data of which he has not yet released, pinpoints roughly 750,000 remaining acres, most of which are on privately owned lands. Between 2005 and 2012, habitat destruction slowed, likely due to the economic collapse, Holland surmised, but the overall number of acres of California vernal pools continues to decline.

Holland’s most recent research shows that, around Chico and other urban areas, habitat loss continues to be a result of “urbanization and land use pressure,” but, “in the larger valley picture, it’s ag,” Holland stated. His research concludes that “more than 80 percent of the habitat loss in that period, which includes a major reces-

sion, was due not to urbanization … but to agricultural conversion.”

The type of conversion varies according to location: “In Stanislaus County, it’s almonds. In Fresno County, it’s pistachios,” he offered.

Butte County has “some of the most significant vernal pool habitat in the state, and a lot of it is still vulnerable” to development, said Jenny Marr, senior environmental scientist (specialist) with the Department of Fish and Wildlife. In conjunction with a number of other agencies, Marr has been developing the Butte Regional Conservation Plan that will help address vernal pool vulnerabilities, which should be open for public review in the fall. Currently, when develop-

ing over an acre of vernal pools, developers must pay for the conservation of a similar acre of nearby pools. The BRCP would change that concept, by looking at larger blocks of habitat, which is more effective for maintaining a healthy ecosystem than 1 acre of habitat surrounded by development.

“The plan itself would provide for differences in soil, hydrology, species of each vernal pool habitat,” said Marr, who will be a moderator at the conference.

The first day of the conference is dedicated to presentations on new research, conservation efforts, management techniques, and legal cases regarding vernal pools. The second day sends conference goers on field trips to local vernal pools, including Meriam Park Preserve and Vina Plains Preserve, which occupies 4,600 acres in Tehama County. The Vina Plains Preserve is a key piece of the larger Lassen Foothills Project, which covers 900,000 acres between Chico and Redding.

Scientists believe that at least 90 percent of California vernal pools are gone, and possibly up to 98 percent. “So it’s absolutely vital that we try to protect what remains,” Vlamis said. She cited their importance for migratory waterfowl, since the birds stop at vernal pools to load up on proteinrich insects, and for the myriad plants and animals endemic to vernal pools that are rapidly losing habitat.

Holland took a simpler position on the importance of the pools. “To put it into as few words as possible: vernal pools are cool.” Ω

HEALTHLINES Filmmakers Terry Sterrenberg and Laurie Simons are part of the movement for single-payer health care coverage in the United States.

Californians most in need of health care have the least access, concludes a recently released California HealthCare Foundation report.

The Council on Graduate Medical Education recommends having 60 to 80 primary care physicians and 85 to 105 specialists per 100,000 people, according to HealthyCal.org. The Bay Area met those ratios, with 86 primary care physicians and 175 specialists per 100,000 people in 2011. But the San Joaquin Valley—an area with more poor, uninsured residents—had just 48 primary care doctors and 80 specialists for the same number of people.

Doctor-to-patient ratios were also low in the Inland Empire, while California’s farnorthern counties barely met recommended levels. These areas could experience doctor shortages this year as demand rises under the Affordable Care Act.

PARTY DRUG FOR THE CURE?

Low doses of ketamine, often used illegally as a party drug, could treat severe depression, UK researchers say.

In a small clinical trial, a research team at the Oxford Health NHS Foundation Trust gave 28 people doses of the psychedelic drug, which is used medically as a veterinary and human anesthetic. Eight of the participants showed improvements in reported levels of depression, with half of those improved so much they were no longer classified as depressed. As for duration of the effect, some relapsed within days, while others found they benefited from the dose for up to three months. The trial included patients who had lived with depression for 20 years.

However, all the findings weren’t so rosy.

There were also serious side effects, including one case of blood flow to the brain being interrupted.

ALZHEIMER’S RESEARCH UNDERFUNDED

“Call Congressman Doug LaMalfa and ask him to make Alzheimer’s disease a national priority,” Chico resident R.A. Fanno urges North State residents in a letter to the CN&R dated March 31.

Fanno is part of the national Alzheimer’s Association’s ongoing push for increased research funding, which remains relatively scarce despite increasing costs in human health and to the health care system. The National Institutes of Health dedicated $5.3 billion to cancer research in 2013, almost $3 billion to HIV/AIDS, and $1.2 billion to diabetes, according to Newsweek.

Alzheimer’s research received just $500 million, though Congress did pass an unprecedented $122 million increase to Alzheimer’s research, education, outreach and caregiver support in January.

An estimated 5.2 million Americans have Alzheimer’s, and that figure could reach 7.1 million by 2025, according to the Alzheimer’s Association’s annual Disease Facts and Figures report.

The total cost of caring for Americans with Alzheimer’s or other dementias is expected to reach $214 billion this year.

Vital scenes Creators of health care documentary bring their movie and message to Chico by

Wthe state of Washington, Laurie Simons and Terry Sterrenberg found themhile raising their two sons in

selves in a position familiar to many working adults. One of the boys would get injured, and the parents would need to decide if the injury was serious enough to merit a trip to the doctor’s office or emergency room.

Simons and Sterrenberg aren’t physicians, though they do work in health care—they’re psychotherapists. Their triage wasn’t about medicine, but rather about finances. Since they didn’t have health insurance, dollar signs were almost as significant as vital signs.

“People who are uninsured or underinsured have to go through that process on a daily basis,” Sterrenberg said. “It’s kind of like this voice in the back of your head that keeps chattering—this constant worry, this constant anxiety. We call it the ‘jackhammer effect,’ which Americans have in their lives and don’t even know it.

“Canadians don’t.”

As a Canadian-American, Simons was raised in a country that offers health care to all citizens. Moving to the United States with her husband and sons proved to be an eye-opener.

Discussing Canada’s health care system with Americans was perhaps even more surprising. She and Sterrenberg would hear opinions that didn’t jibe with what they considered basic facts.

That led them to become filmmakers.

They created The Healthcare Movie, a documentary released in 2011 that examines how and why the two countries’ medical systems developed differently, and what this means for residents of both.

They and their film will come to Chico on April 23, in conjunction with the Drive for Universal Healthcare (or D.U.H.)—a campaign for single-payer coverage conducting a West Coast tour that starts tomorrow (April 11) in San Diego and finishes May 3 in Seattle. The other Northern California stops are April 23 in Oakland, April 24 in Santa Rosa and April 25 in Sacramento.

“The number and enthusiasm of California activists has been amazing to us,” D.U.H. founder Sue Saltmarsh said, “and we are so hopeful that we can support the efforts there in the state legislature, as well as reaching some folks who might not be in our ‘choir’ yet.”

That’s the aim of local organizers, namely the Butte County Health Care Coalition. Tom Reed, the coalition’s presi-

dent, and Dr. David Potter, a Chico oncologist, hope The Healthcare Movie stirs discussion, if not action.

“Those of us involved feel the Affordable Care Act is inadequate,” Reed said. “It doesn’t insure everybody; it doesn’t, in our opinion, have adequate cost controls; it’s a bureaucratic nightmare.”

As Potter put it: “We have the cost of a national health program without a national health program.”

Reed echoed Potter’s sentiment: “Our criticism isn’t the same as those on the right. We’re not trying to get the government out of health care—we’re trying to get the private insurance industry out of health care…. This tour is part of our campaign for that.”

Initially, they planned to explore health care only in Canada in order to counteract misconceptions.

However, as they progressed in their research, they were struck by how similarly the countries’ health systems evolved until a point of divergence in the 1960s. That’s when Canadians adopted reform measures and Americans pushed back against “socialized medicine”—a term that grew out of a marketing campaign mounted by the American Medical Association, which opposed a national health system.

The filmmakers see a contemporary parallel: the in-vogue expression “government takeover of health care.” In the face of such opinion-shaping, they hope The Healthcare Movie challenges what Americans hold true.

“We want them to realize that the Canadian health care system is a lot better than what we have in terms of what it provides at literally half the cost of the United States system,” Sterrenberg said. “People don’t know that; they don’t believe it. They don’t believe the Canadian system has quality health care.”

Simons and Sterrenberg consider their work personal, not political, yet have become public faces of single-payer advocacy. After completing the film, they “created a portable lifestyle,” she said, traveling in their RV and conducting

therapy sessions via Skype. Their passion for the film was reinvigorated last spring, during an extended stay in Maine, when Simons was diagnosed with melanoma.

“Having to deal with the doctors and the insurance companies … threw us right back into the stream of wanting to be activists in this movement,” Sterrenberg said.

Simons wound up needing a skin graft on her cheek, which she considers her “badge”—a reminder of her experience and the inspiration for her blog name, Facing Forward.

“It really represents the failure of the system to provide,” she said.

“I was so torn up with the financial worry over this incident that it overshadowed the two surgeries and other things I had to go through.

“That’s the difference between the U.S. system and the Canadian system in a nutshell—in Canada, the dollar sign doesn’t ever enter the thought bubble. You don’t even think about it. It’s hard to explain to Americans what it’s like to have that missing.” Ω

Meet the photographers Kyle Delmar is a professional photographer who is active in the local arts scene. Many of his artful images have graced the pages—and the covers—of the CN&R over the years.

Paula Schultz is an award-winning freelance photo-artist whose work has been represented through exhibitions, competitions, commissions, and in and on the covers of numerous magazines and business websites.

JoVan Johnson grew up in Compton and moved to Chico to study business. He started shooting nightlife photography, which morphed into weddings and portraits, along with landscapes and architecture. He enjoys “literally freezing a moment in time.”

Melanie MacTavish is a small-town nut born and raised in Chico with an adoration for photographing nature’s small and unusual creatures and casualties. She’s also a regular CN&R contributor.

Max Infeld describes his photography as a “living work in progress,” one that he hopes will aid projects for both him and other artists.

His photo of a lone tree at Table Mountain is this week’s cover image.

Polaroid cameras also lack the ability to zoom in and out, forcing the photographer to work a little more for the right shot.

“You’re in control of your depth of field. But you have to eyeball how far away you are from your subject, and then fix your camera to work at that distance and adjust your lighting levels. It’s much more involved than just snapping pictures,” she said. “And with Polaroids, you can’t post-process them at all. It captures how everything is in that moment rather than a façade of how it is.”

Dresler will be showcasing her Polaroids at Empire Coffee throughout the month of April. The exhibit, titled Wish You Were Here, is a collection of nearly 40 Polaroid prints, documenting her travels around California and Nevada over the last three years.

“Each Polaroid is my way of saving one of my 24 CN&R April 10, 2014

favorite moments in a tangible way,” the 24-year-old said. “So, Wish You Were Here is a reminder of the things that are memorable and meaningful to me.”

Now a professional photographer, Dresler’s love of the medium began as a child, when she would organize photo sessions with her stuffed animals in Lower Bidwell Park using disposable cameras. After her parents purchased a digital camera for the family when she was 13, she saved her money so she could buy one of her own.

As her experience with photography matured, so has her content. After years of shooting bugs and flowers—stunning, brightly colored extreme closeups of monstrous-looking praying mantises and spiders, and full shots of flower heads against black backgrounds—and then children and families in a commercial portrait studio (where she realized her distaste for artificial lighting), her career path took a more adult turn.

“I started doing erotic stuff on my own around four years ago, and started submitting my work to shows,” Dresler said. “People responded really well to it. So I just started doing that more regularly.”

That in turn led to her photographing sex workers, a niche market that’s decidedly more about fantasy than reality—and one that can have detrimental and de-humanizing effects on those within the industry.

“I like being able to shed light on and humanize the sex industry for people,” she said. “I don’t like to throw around the ‘activist’ word, because it sounds kind of pretentious. But I’m a sex-worker activist.”

Dresler’s work has been featured in galleries in Seattle and Detroit, and she currently has photographs on display in Portland, Ore., Las Vegas, Nev., San Francisco and Los Angeles. Wish You Were Here is her first local show since 2011, and she will be on hand for an opening reception on April 11 at 6 p.m.

IN THE MIX The String Arcade String Arcade Players Nerdtracks Recordings Despite Roger Ebert’s decree that “video games can never be art,” video games continue to be art. More than that, gamers and nongamers alike continue to find artistic expression within the medium and, for some like the String Arcade Players, in mediums inspired by digital gaming. Funded through Kickstarter, The String Arcade features original string compositions of video game scores from timeless games such as The Legend of Zelda, and newer favorites including Plants vs. Zombies. While national tours of symphonic renditions of video game soundtracks—such as Video Games Live and The Legend of Zelda: Symphony of the Goddesses—provide the full orchestral treatment, The String Arcade’s use of simply cello, viola and violin gives the album its own cohesive sound despite source material spanning multiple decades and genres. The String Arcade Players imbue the tracks with the spirit of the games—how we heard them then and how we think of them now. There’s a playful frolic in the dolphincall strings for Ecco the Dolphin; a haunting spookiness carried over from LucasArts’ Monkey Island 2 as well as its Scabb Cemetery; and an unforgettable tug on our 8- and 16-bit controllers by the iconic melodies of Link and Sonic. If that’s not art, then I don’t know what is.

Storm Front John Sandford G.P. Putnam’s Sons When it comes to crime novelists, John Sandford is one of the best. A former Pulitzer winner for the St. Paul Pioneer Press, he’s a journalist at heart, which means he doesn’t waste the reader’s time and is a stickler for details. Set in the Twin Cities area of Minnesota, his 24 “Prey” novels (the word is in every title, e.g. Silken Prey) feature homicide investigator Lucas Davenport, who is independently wealthy but stays with police work because he loves it. Sandford has also written seven novels (including this latest) centered on Virgil Flowers, a homicide detective who works under Davenport. In some ways Storm Front is a departure for Sandford, in that nobody dies and the overriding tone is one of comic absurdity, not unlike a Carl Hiaasen novel. In this case various parties, including Mossad and Hezbollah, along with a TV star, a wingnut academic and an endearing Lebanese pilot-in-training, are in pursuit of a reliquary that a dying Minnesota minister has stolen from an Israeli archeological dig. They all seem to believe the ancient stone has the potential to rewrite the history of the Middle East. Flowers’ job is to straighten out the mess and find the stone—which he does, of course. The fun is in getting there.

Beautiful Jazz Christian Jacob Wilder Jazz Subtitled “A private concert,” this is a solo piano recording by Christian Jacob. The native of France began classical music studies in 1962 at the age of 4, but a few years later, after hearing the Dave Brubeck Quartet’s recording of “Take Five,” he became fascinated with jazz and soon discovered Oscar Peterson’s records. “I had heard improvisation,” he said, “and it was like a door had opened to infinite possibilities. I was in love with jazz music.”

The pianist then entered the Berklee College of Music where, among other honors, he received the Oscar Peterson Jazz Masters award, then went on the road with Maynard Ferguson’s band. Most recently he’s been with vocalist Tierney Sutton’s band—where’s he’s joined by ex-Chico bassist Kevin Axt—with whom he’s made eight CDs. This is a luxurious-sounding disc that was recorded in an L.A. concert hall, and each of the “iconic standards” allows him plenty of room for improvisation. The pensive “Body and Soul” is—among a collection of magnificent tunes—the stand-out track, although the revved-up “Giant Steps” comes in a close second. A special treat is his whirlwind rendition of Stravinsky’s “Etude No. 4.” This is an outstanding recording by a man who certainly deserves more recognition.

The film wanders a while through the city, both before we first meet Jep and again after he has made his exit (the boat ride that the film takes under the closing credits is worth paying attention to in its entirety). Plus, Jep is characterized in part through his very active, very restless love of Rome, and also through the vast, fascinating, and sometimes bewildering array of characters he encounters in his daily and nightly rambles.

Toni Servillo (Il Divo, Gomorrah); the Fellini-esque swirl of faces, places and moods cooked up by director Paolo Sorrentino (Il Divo, This Must Be the Place); its insider’s tour (wry, sprawling, fine-tuned) of 21st century Rome; its latter-day take on “la dolce vita” (and its resonance as a kind of unofficial sequel to the 1960 Fellini film of that name).

Servillo plays Jep Gambardella, an aging writer and socialite specializing in Roman nightlife. He gained early fame with his first and only novel, but has long since settled into life as a kind of highbrow journalist and bon vivant. He has never married (not that he suffers any lack of female companionship), and his friends say he hasn’t left Rome since the day he arrived from the provinces.

While Jep is the central figure in Sorrentino’s Roman phantasmagoria, you can easily make the case that contemporary Rome, with all of its cultural contradictions, is the film’s true

All of that operates more or less in concert with the more personal aspects of Jep’s story. We first see him at a rapturously wild party on the occasion of his 65th birthday, and other intimations of mortality—the death of an old lover, the funeral of another friend— soon spur him toward quietly fraught reflections on what his life has come to. In the course of the action, those reflections—amiable enough, but not exactly happy—begin to coincide with the film’s way of viewing all this.

Jep is at the center of things throughout, but a crucial part of the film’s fascination comes from its peculiar combinations of character and incident— “the Saint,” a wizened nun who preaches poverty and seems to have brought a flock of flamingos to Jep’s balcony; a celebrity guru who talks like a mystical monk and dispenses Botox; a conceptual artist who specializes in primal screams and head-butts while naked in ancient settings; a serious young man whose installation, also in an ancient setting, consists entirely of the photos he takes of himself on a daily basis; Ramona, an intelligent but perhaps doomed stripper whom Jep dates for a while; Stefania, a longtime friend who somehow reconciles with Jep even after his devastating critique of her career; etc. Ω

The Grand Budapest Hotel

Wes Anderson’s new film is the story of an imaginary middle European hotel in the imaginary Republic of Zubrowka in the mostly very real year of 1932. But it’s also the tale of how a modern-day resident of that hotel, the mysterious and rather sorrowful Mr. Moustafa (F. Murray Abraham), came to be its owner. And that story, in turn, centers on the remarkable character and career of Monsieur Gustave (Ralph Fiennes), the legendary and perhaps improbable concierge of that establishment, the Grand Budapest Hotel, in its heyday. The 1932 part of the story is central to everything else in the film. The rise of Nazism lingers on the horizon while center stage is occupied by the semi-picaresque adventures of M. Gustave and an orphaned refugee named Zero (Tony Revelori) and the farcical melodrama that ensues when M. Gustave finds himself named executor of the estate of an elderly woman of wealth (Tilda Swinton). Overall, tragicomic high spirits in deteriorating circumstances are the film’s strong suit, and Fiennes’ superb multifaceted performance ensures M. Noah

Darren Aronofsky’s reframing of the Old Testament tale of Noah and the flood is not quite like any other Biblical epic you’ve seen at the movies. It has the grand scale and sweep that’s always been part of such extravaganzas, but it also has unexpected jolts of dramatic intensity and contemporary urgency to it. In Aronofsky’s by no means irreverent retelling, Noah is ferociously intent on completing the fearsome mission that “the Creator” has charged him with. For this Noah, the ark’s purpose is to preserve the animal kingdom for a fresh start from which human beings may be excluded. Thus, Noah (Russell Crowe) faces dramatic crises within his own family and must also face the moral and metaphysical challenges presented by a scruffy but surprisingly humanistic antagonist named Tubal-cain (Ray Winstone). Crowe and Winstone, skilled character actors with obvious action-movie credibility, are just right for a film that means to mix large-scale action spectacle with a surprisingly intimate blend of moral and metaphysical drama. inaugural Treasures of a Collection guided tour being held Saturday, April 12. The art center wants this fundraiser to become an annual event and is pulling out all the stops to make it attractive. There will be food as well as live music at each house.

Tour participants will be divided into four groups, with each starting out at a different house with a map and a schedule. They will rotate through the four homes, and at each the owners will talk about their collections, their motivations for buying art, and the joys of living with it.

In addition to the Phillips/Klang house, the tour will include the homes of Bruce and Jeanne Ertle, Dorna Andersen and Gwen Curatilo.

Curatilo’s a friend of mine and I’ve been in her house many times. Like Phillips, she’s filled her home with artwork. There are also many framed posters dating to her early career as a professional opera singer (she was a featured soprano with the San Francisco Opera Company) and her later work as director of Chico State’s fabled Opera Workshop program, when she was directing huge productions of such works as The Magic Flute and La Bohème. She’s an amazing woman, and a tour of her house is worth the cost of a ticket by itself.

Chico State President Paul Zingg and his wife, Yasuko, also are participating in helping to raise money for the CAC by opening their home to guests the following evening, Sunday, April 13, for a tour of their substantial art collection as well as a catered Japanese dinner. All but six of the $100 tickets had been sold as of last week, so the dinner event is no doubt sold out by the time you read this.

But there are plenty of tickets left for the Saturday tour, said Debra Simpson, the CAC’s office manager.

Basque trio brings radical rock to the States

To understand where Berri Txarrak is coming from, it helps to look at the Basque Radical Rock movement, which, fueled by British punk and metal scenes, emerged in the early 1980s as a musical/ socio-political force following the death of Gen. Francisco Franco and the end of his 40-year dictatorship in Spain. Berri Txarrak formed in 1994, several years after the movement ran its course. There have been a couple of lineup changes since then; singer and guitarist Urbizu, the only remaining original member, is backed by bassist David Gonzalez and drummer Galder Izagirre.

Urbizu said via email that, while the Basque Radical Rock movement has subsided, the band still strives to make rebellious music in that same vein. “I like the idea of rock music as a way to question everything,” he said. “Rock must be defiant—at least that’s the kind of art we love.”

And though Urbizu’s lyrics touch on personal subjects from time to time, he prefers to keep material opaque enough for it to remain universal.

“I think it must be the audience who finishes the

song,” he said. “I kind of give them clues with the words and try to make them feel sensations and think by themselves. There isn’t one big truth, there are lots of interpretations.”

Given the language barrier for American listeners, Berri Txarrak’s lyrical subject matter is neither here nor there, but Urbizu believes the music conveys the message on its own. And listening to their songs, it’s striking how familiar rock ’n’ roll sung in a foreign tongue feels. The language issue is moot. For instance, in the bridge section of the 2005 single “Oreka,” everything strips down to a swaggering bassline, and it’s satisfyingly familiar when the extra-explosive chorus kicks in and fills the empty space.

Instrumentally, Berri Txarrak is all distorted guitars and rumbling bass, but vocally, there’s a clear emphasis on melodic hooks and except for the language, the band falls neatly in line with radio-friendly American alternative rock. (It makes sense that Berri Txarrak toured with Rise Against.) But Urbizu doesn’t wonder what heights of success his band could reach if he sang in English, nor is he concerned about whether American audiences are put off by his singing in Euskara.

“Obviously, it’s not the easiest way to become popular in the U.S., but we don’t really care,” he said.

“We want to be the best band as possible and spread our message and music, but it must be our way.

“Music is able to connect people by itself—that’s a fact,” he continued. “But there are huge cultural lobbies, let’s say, that build barriers to diversity. That’s why, if you turn your radio on, you’ll only find music in English, and mostly songs without a message other than, ‘Have fun and try to not think.’”

The songs they’ve recorded with Robinson have not yet come together in album form, Urbizu said, but the band has “many surprises” lined up for 2014 to celebrate its 20th anniversary. Ω April 10, 2014

WAIT, WHAT DAY IS TODAY? Every semester I say that I am not going to

miss the Chico State Art Department’s Open Studios event—where art students working in all mediums get a chance to show off the art they’ve been creating—and every semester for the last several years I have managed to miss it. I don’t know why I’ve blocked it, but on the day of the spring Taking in Ama Posey’s wall of paintings.

2014 edition (Tuesday, April 8), I almost spaced it again! And I am so glad I didn’t. I only caught the early BFA portion—which is spread out among the studio classrooms on both floors of Ayres Hall (the MFA tour is later in the day in the Fifth Street graduate studios)—and it was a wonderful mix of ideas and mediums.

Each room functions as a mini art gallery, and there was something different, and often surprising, through every door. Cortney Berg showed off her large, charred (as in, burned with an acetylene torch) sheets of watercolor paper.

One of Kuya Dyte’s dancing, Marie Collar presented sculptures and cartoon comedians. other installation pieces (like the listening station playing four separate pieces of vinyl pie glued together into one album spinning very slowly). And Kuya Dyte offered rotoscoped cartoon loops of improv comedians. A great lunch break, capped by the discovery of a mysterious bit of street art on a Wall Street sidewalk.

J.K. Rowling finished writing the seventh volume of her Harry Potter books, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): When you see your shadow, it’s usually right next to you.

It’s there on the ground or floor, a fuzzy black shape that follows you around closely. But today I saw my shadow waving back at me from afar. 21): When I took an intermediate painting class in college, our first assignment was to imitate an old master. My choice was the Flemish painter Pieter Bruegel the Elder (1525-1569). I worked on reproducing his painting “The Fight Between Carnival and Lent” as precisely as I could. It was tedious and liberating. I invoked Bruegel’s spirit and prayed for his guidance. I sank my psyche deeply into his. By the end of the four-week process, I’d learned a lot about painting. Given the current astrological omens, Sagittarius, I suggest you try something similar. Pick someone who excels at a way of working or a state of being that you would like to master yourself, and copy that person for a while. For best results, have fun with it. Play!

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19):

Capricorn author J.R.R. Tolkien spent 14 years working on The Lord of the Rings.

In using a typewriter to produce more than 1,200 pages, he relied solely on his two index fingers. He never learned the 10-finger typing method. I suppose it didn’t matter in the end. Presumably, his impediment didn’t affect the quality of his work, but only made it harder to accomplish and required him to spend a lot more time. visited a self-proclaimed real estate expert to get the real story on the market. His quotes appear in magazines, newspapers and the blogosphere.

“I understand you’re quite the prognosticator,” I said.

“I simply assess the facts and data available to anyone,” he said. “I examine the information subjectively, thereby allowing me to analyze trends and market directions that might be overlooked or misunderstood by people who lack my skills and intelligence. You are welcome, however, to refer to my work as prognostication, if you must.”

“So what’s the real story on the real estate market?”

He jutted his chin out, tilted his head back, raised his eyebrows, and prognosticated.

He told me California home prices have surged by double-digits, and some of his “constituents” are voicing concerns about the market entering into another period of “uncontrolled upward-trending” real estate prices.

“Based upon my surveys and research, conditions of price movement will continue upward, but in a more modest fashion,” he said.

He said the housing market and loan financing conditions are undoubtedly healthier than in the mid-2000s, before

the housing market deteriorated. Loan financing requirements are “inherently more discriminating” now. Home buyers are showing up with bigger down payments than when the market was at its peak. In general, fewer buyers are able to get a loan with zero down payment.

“Cash buyers are involved in the market in great abundance,” he said. He expects that trend to continue, which is bad news for buyers with loan financing, because the cash buyers tend to prevail in multiple-offer bidding wars, which are commonplace in today’s market.

“I am in alliance with my colleagues who predict the overall economy to continue to improve slowly but steadily,” he said.

I noticed on the bookshelf behind him a crystal ball and a Magic 8 Ball, and on his wall a dart board with “Yes,” “No” and “Maybe” printed on it rather than numbers. I asked if those were his tools of the trade.

“Novelty gifts from my more jocular associates,” he said.

I asked if he thought interest rates would go over 6 percent in the next 12 months.

“Ah,” he said, “the ultimate question.”

He reached behind to his bookshelf and handed me the Magic 8 Ball. I turned it over and saw words floating in the inky interior.

The 2014 Chico Area Music Awards

I

t’s almost unbelievable that we are already on the ninth edition of the annual Chico Area Music Awards. Since the CAMMIES started in 2006, the CN&R has been trying, above all else, to make the event a showcase of our little city’s big, eclectic music scene.

And each year, as the celebration and the crowds at the music showcases have grown, so too have the musical powers of the artists who take part. It was striking how nearly all of the dozens of acts that played during last weekend’s three-day, 11-show CAMMIES Music Festival came to the stage ready to put on a strong show. These are packed bills, with tight schedules of short sets and brief changeovers between acts. It’s a frantic choreography that the promoter, musicians and sound people execute without rehearsal, and when you add to that charged atmosphere a band that is ready to rock, plus an audience of primed, engaged music fans, the energy can go through the roof.

At the Blues Showcase on the packed LaSalles patio, Sapphire Soul lifted everyone out of their seats with their blustery boogiewoogie. French Reform and Bogg played out of their minds during their respective Indie/ Experimental and Jazz showcases at the Maltese Bar & Tap Room. At the Rap Showcase, the nominated MCs lined up behind the de facto house band—DJ Hap Hathaway and guitarist Shaulie Fingers of the Resonators— for an amazing succession of smooth and dynamic collaborations. And the Bunnymilk duo, during the Folk/Americana/Country Showcase at Café Coda, had the lights down low and blue while singing face-to-face, and drew the crowd into their dark world with their beautiful harmonies.

Another memorable musical weekend in Chico. Thank you, everyone, for playing along with the CAMMIES, and look out for next year. We’re turning 10!
