I ride the 2.5 miles between my home and work, right though Bidwell Park. After work I usually extend the ride on the Park’s trails and paths.

What’s the best thing about biking?

I like working out on my road bike. I’ve been running and biking for years, but recently got into triathlons, so I’ve greatly increased my ‘saddle-time’.

What would you most like car drivers to know?

Give plenty of room when passing. There’s rarely a need for a car to squeeze really close to a bike. A friend of mine here in Chico got knocked off his bike last month when the side view mirror of a pick-up truck smacked him in the head.

Why DO you ride?

Besides the working out and exercise, it ties into my job, promoting alternative transportation. Plus, it’s fun.

A lot of my co-workers are into biking, so we’re able to take long rides together.

A call for civility News that former Chico City Council candidate Toby Schindel-

beck is running for a House seat in his recently adopted state of Idaho (see Downstroke, page 8) reminds us we are in an election year, which almost invariably means we can expect a couple of ugly, mud-slinging campaigns for office, both locally and statewide.

Schindelbeck, a relatively recent arrival to Chico when he filed candidacy paperwork, was almost a mascot for such campaigns when he ran two years ago. He was demeaning and disrespectful to people who disagreed with his positions, and at the end of the day got trounced at the polls.

This year, we’re hoping to see respectful campaigns that focus on real issues. Among other contested positions, the Butte County This year, we’re hoping Board of Supervisors seats of incumbents Maureen Kirk and Larry Wahl are up for to see respectful grabs in June. And the contest for Chico City campaigns that focus Council positions currently held by Mary Goloff, Mayor Scott Gruendl and Vice Mayor on real issues.

Both races will involve controversial matters.

The city’s budget will be the hot topic in the city. At the county level, medical marijuana is the thorny issue. Both matters can easily spark emotional displays and accusations, but we’d like to see everyone rise above it.

We’re calling on candidates and their supporters as well as the general public to be civil to one another throughout election season. Ω

element in the dynamic balance of nature. But in spite of that, more than 1,200 of these magnificent animals—including wolf pups under 6 months old—have been killed in the Northern Rockies in just two years.

In some states, such as North Carolina, legal coyote hunting has taken its toll on the red wolf population. Wildlife officials believe the animals have been mistaken for coyotes. As a result, approximately 10 percent of the population has been killed. Obama administration announced plans to prematurely strip that protection from gray wolves across most of the lower 48 states—a move that will abruptly end one of America’s most important species recovery programs.

The proposal concludes that wolf protection in the continental United States, in place since 1978, is no longer needed, even though there are fledgling populations in places like the Pacific Northwest where survival hinges on continued federal protection.

In 2011, Western states became captivated by the expeditions of OR-7, or “Journey,” the lone wolf who wandered into Northern California to find a mate. Sadly, he did not find a mate and made his way back to his home in Oregon.

One rogue wolf should not be the sole reason we push for change in trying to bring the wolf population back from extinction. Any push for change should be based on fact and fact alone; the sole reason for the rapid decline of the wolf population is because of our own error. We have the opportunity to correct this error. Please, do not support any anti-wolf legislation or hunts, and instead allow this natural predator to regain its population the old-fashioned way. Bird strikes back Don Bird is at it again. As News Editor Tom Gascoyne reported

last week in Newslines (see “Bird keeps his watch,” March 20), the tenacious political activist has once again set his sights on unseating Sen. Jim Nielsen for living outside the district he represents.

Bird’s mission was reignited recently, when another senator, Roderick Wright of Los Angeles, was busted for having lied about his residency.

Wright claimed to live in Inglewood, while he actually lives outside his district in the more upper-class city of Baldwin Hills. He was convicted on eight counts of perjury and voter fraud in January.

This time around, Bird has changed his tactics in his crusade against the Republican senator. Instead of threatening him with a citizen’s arrest (that led to a temporary restraining order), Bird’s called on Assemblyman Dan Logue (R-Marysville) to sponsor an Assembly bill requiring those running for office to prove one year’s residency in the district they seek to represent.

It’s a great idea, but Bird is barking up the wrong tree with Logue. And it’s doubtful any other Sacramento lawmaker would be willing to back his cause. He needs to instead lobby Tehama County District Attorney Greg Cohen, who, like other district attorneys, has discretion to prosecute in cases of voter fraud. A few year’s ago, Cohen referred the matter to the state Attorney General’s Office. But with Wright’s recent conviction, the DA has no excuse for sitting on his hands.

Charges against Wright, a Democrat, were brought forward in 2010 by the L.A. District Attorney’s Office, after an investigation going back to 2008. He was convicted by jury trial. And what he did by living in a swankier neighborhood outside his district is no different from what Nielsen is doing by living in Woodland.

If Nielsen indeed lives outside his district then he, too, is a perjurer, since he is registered to vote in Tehama County, where he claims to live in a double-wide mobile home. In a recent Sac Bee story, Nielsen told a reporter he spends nights in that trailer in Gerber, caring for his cats.

Nielsen may have cats at that property, but we’re pretty sure they’re feral.

We applaud Bird’s efforts and call on Cohen to do his job. Ω

Two views on Gaza

Eva never mentioned that, if Gaza would stop sending in rockets, Israel would stop bombing. She never mentioned them launching their rockets into schools or hospitals.

She did not mention the 40 rockets fired by Hamas two weeks ago. She failed to mention that Israel hits empty buildings because they warn the people in advance.

She is in a war zone where signs say “don’t go near the fence” and she has to go to the fence? While many have this hatred for Israel, they overlook the recent arms shipment, the border closing by others, or that simply stopping firing rockets that provoke Israel is a simple answer to the problem. In a war zone, if the sign says ‘stay back,’ why are you there yelling over a megaphone?

Blame pension financing Re “Return to lender” (by Michele Chen, Newslines, March 20): This week’s article accepting the Post Office’s fiscal problems as a starting point and the Feb. 27 article lambasting Chico’s labor force for the city’s budget problems both start by accepting the false premise that labor is the cause for these issues.

The Post Office has always supported itself and does still. The thing bringing it to the brink is the idiotic idea of financing the next 75 years of pensions in 10 years.

One thing that has caused bankruptcies in other public entities is disregard for renegotiating debt to banks. The bankers’ glutinous and illegal greed drove the recent crash that put these entities in the position they are now in because the tax base collapsed as the bubble did. Not only did we guarantee the banks not lose any money, but the business model also has not changed.

Chico is on the hook with the redevelopment fees recently folded into the debt for interest about 3 percent to 6 percent. How about renegotiating both the amount of debt and the interest down to what the banks pay—0 percent.

My mom will probably never admit this, but like it or not, she was a feminist. Growing up, there was a Gloria Steinem quote hanging prominently in our home: “A woman without a man is like a fish without a bicycle.”

That quote on an illustration of a fish trying to ride a bicycle went up in my house after my parents split up. When the meaning of the drawing dawned on my 8-year-old tomboy self, it stuck with me. I’m glad it did for reasons I won’t go into in this space.

Tuesday was Steinem’s 80th birthday and with it came stories celebrating her and the women’s rights movement. It was also an occasion for her critics to try to tear her down. Ironically, most of them were women.

One of the tactics the propagandists used was plucking Steinem quotes and using them out of context. Like this one: “[Housewives] are dependent creatures who are still children … parasites.” One write-up used that quote as the basis for the argument that she’s intolerant. Of course, the writer never bothered to note that Steinem said those words during a time when women were treated as lesser than men, much lesser than men.

Think Mad Men for a second here. Thanks to Steinem and other progressive women of the 1960s and ’70s, I’ll never know what it’s like to live in an era in which my boss calls me “sweetheart.”

That’s not to say I haven’t dealt with sexist garbage. I have. In fact, one regular right-wing reader wrote to me recently, addressing me as “girl.” To his credit, he apologized after I made it clear how offensive I found it. My point is that the Mother of Feminism’s work isn’t over.

Not even close. I wish her many more happy birthdays.

Where are the priests? I spent days unsuccessfully trying to track down a local priest for the sidebar to our cover story about Pope Francis. Beginning on Friday, I called and wrote to no fewer than six local Catholic churches.

No dice. (My thanks to Fr. Peter Hansen from St. Augustine Anglican Church and the other locals who took the time to weigh in on the pope.)

Turns out most of the Catholic priests were in Sacramento for the ordination Mass of Monsignor Myron Cotta, a priest who, as of Tuesday, is auxiliary bishop of the Diocese of Sacramento. Evidently, the pomp and pageantry of his promotion was a pretty big deal. Cotta was appointed by none other than Pope Francis himself back in January. That’s quite an honor, if you ask me.

Regular readers may recall that I’ve written a little about the new pope. He’s among the most popular pontiffs in modern history, according to a recent Pew Research Center poll. There’s something about the guy.

For one thing, he actually smiles. He’s humble and appears to genuinely care for the downtrodden. Catholic or not, what’s not to like?

tion. “Latinos have the lowest levels of education of any racial/ethnic group in the state,” according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

And Mexico is the culprit.

We have to demand that Mexico fix this problem. This low regard for education in our Latino community comes directly from Mexico, where the head of the teachers union was recently arrested for stealing $160 million, where only 1 percent of the teachers could pass a test to get a raise, where one-third of Mexican students flunked Spanish of all things, and over half flunked math.

Mexican students have scored the lowest reading levels of all developed countries.

Here in the modern, high-pressure, highly educated USA, if you’re uneducated you have two choices: bottom-feeder jobs or crime. So the answer to crime is education. And logically the School of Education here at Chico State should jump on this problem.

It costs $47,000 a year to keep someone in prison in California.

Let’s spend that money on sending someone to Harvard instead.

The letters continue …

Re “More on that story” (Letters,

by Stephanie Taber and Peter Durfee, March 20): Once again, Stephanie Taber has a letter to the editor attacking public employees. And once again, Taber failed to mention that she is a political appointee (thus, a public employee) of Larry Wahl (also a public employee). And Taber failed to mention that Wahl and she sponsored Measure A (defeated by 68 percent) in June 2011, forcing a special election costing the city taxpayers $151,000, which led to the closing of a fire station.

That $151,000 could pay for two police officers. Wahl has never reimbursed the taxpayers, nor apologized. And this time, Taber failed to mention that when Wahl was on the City Council, he voted most of the time for huge salary increases for city managers, who in retirement are now drawing six-figure pensions and all with Wahl’s support.

Is this the kettle calling the pot black? And how come Wahl does not list Taber’s salary on his website? And what size pension will Taber get when she retires from politics?

Chico, I felt it disheartening after reading your article a few weeks ago that Chico police officers earn an average of $100,000 a year.

Officer Peter Durfee, president of the Chico Police Officers’Association, stated in the CN&R that Chico police officers deserve this outrageous salary because they put their lives on the line. Red Bluff officers earn approximately onethird the salary of Chico police.

Does this mean Red Bluff police officers’ lives have less value?

Comparing the Chico police officers’ salaries to Oakland police officers’—taking into account that the cost of living is higher in the big city—the salaries would be about the same. Oakland has one of the highest crime rates of any big city in America. It’s doubtful Chico police officers are in as much jeopardy as Oakland police officers.

Gosh! I’ve read those letters, twice, and tried to come away with something more than what can be put on the tip of a fish hook, and if I could—what would I catch other than reiterated jaded computations and accusations?

Something my fictitious uncle from a Lassie or The Andy Griffith episode might have served up: How many times have I said, “It takes more than one vehicle to make a traffic jam”? He also would wax empirically about how job seekers were drawn to a station in life with passion and weigh out the inherent risks associated against that calling. There’s a balance, he’d say, associated with this attraction/risk hypothesis; something uncle learned when “not enough of one leaves too much of the other—restated as a rule of thumb: don’t lose your edge/ that’s how you get hurt.”

Money ain’t what it used to be.

Cartoon not humorous Re “The gun” (This modern world, by Tom Tomorrow, Feb. 27): The rhetoric of the minority Liberal Socialistic Democrat Party (LSD-P) wants the informed and knowledgeable American citizens to believe that

guns kill people all by themselves.

As does the agenda-driven cartoonist want disparately not to be taken as a fool.

Utilizing their “suspension of reality” logic to support an obvious impossibility, augmented with an emotional distorted perspective, it must in their world then follow that: All cartoons are humorous, teleprompters are truthful and people don’t kill people.

A cartoon: an inanimate object requiring a human being for its creation and perhaps levity provides a humorous antidote with truth being at the root of its enjoyment, or humorless agenda-driven fodder containing no truth.

A teleprompter: an inanimate object requiring a human being for it to be operated for either dispensing truth or purposeful lies.

A gun: An inanimate object requiring a human being for it to be operated for either protective defense or unlawful aggression.

Fact: More than 2 million times a year a defense weapon is utilized to prevent, save or truncate an incident.

Fact: Chicago has the most restrictive gun laws and the highest homicide rate in the nation with many LSD-P cities endeavoring to emulate.

CITY RETAINS ANIMAL SHELTER

The city of Chico is opening negotiations with a law firm in an effort to possibly contract out city attorney services, as in-house attorney Lori Barker is set to retire in April.

Meanwhile, the city will maintain operation of the animal shelter. City Manager Brian Nakamura confirmed this week that the city’s Police Department will continue to run the shelter, under the supervision of Animal Services Manager Tracy Mohr.

The city took back management of the shelter’s animal intake services two years ago from the Butte Humane Society after the nonprofit’s 25-year run. BHS continues to run animal adoption services as well as a spay-and-neuter clinic.

NEW SHERIFF IN TOWN

As of May 24, Butte County will have a new sheriff.

Undersheriff Kory Honea was appointed to the post unanimously by the Butte County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday, March 25, after the recommendation of current Sheriff Jerry Smith, who decided recently to retire early. (Smith had announced a few months ago that he would not be seeking re-election this year.)

Honea has served as undersherrif since July 2010 and has worked in law enforcement since 1991, beginning his career in Shasta County and then transferring to Butte County in 1993. Honea will complete Smith’s term, which would have concluded in January 2015.

He is running an uncontested race in June’s primary election, so the decision just puts him in the job a little earlier.

BACK ON THE BALLOT

Toby Schindelbeck, the short-time Chico resident and one-time City Council candidate, has moved on and up in his political aspirations, this time vying for a House seat in his new home of Idaho in that state’s May primary election.

On his website, www.tobyforidaho.com, the right-wing bodybuilder’s platform includes repealing Idaho’s ACA health exchange. “I believe in personal property rights, the right to life, limited government, lower taxes, personal responsibility and our state sovereignty. I believe that our Second Amendment rights are nonnegotiable,” he says on the site.

In Chico, the outspoken Schindelbeck was criticized for his coarse responses to potential constituents, including publicly calling one of them an idiot. He ended up coming in seventh among nine candidates in the 2012 City Council race for four open seats.

Nurses raise a stink Amid layoffs and labor negotiations, union is at odds with Oroville Hospital

In early February, Auletta’s manager informed her that Oroville Hospital was facing financial issues, and that all employees were to be mindful of “every dollar spent,” she said.

Shortly thereafter, she was laid off via a phone call from the Human Resources Department.

“Any employee who has been there for any length of time requires a notice,” Auletta said.

“We all should have got some kind of notice, and none of us did.”

“The problem is the layoffs were done suddenly and with no notice, no paperwork,” agreed Jim Cardwell, a registered nurse going on 25 years with Oroville Hospital.

The layoffs included nurses, physician assistants, respiratory therapists, and X-ray lab techs. In the context of Oroville Hospital’s 1,400 employees, 50 layoffs represents just a 3.5 percent reduction of staff, and fewer than

10 of those employees were nurses, said Jessica Montoya, the hospital’s human resources manager. “Of all the employee groups, nurses were the least affected,” she said.

But the nurses are certainly raising the biggest stink. The California Nurses Association has filed charges with the National Labor Relations Board and is organizing an informational picket outside Oroville Hospital Friday (March 28) from 4 to 9 p.m.

Sean Bartlett, a labor representative for the nurses, said that the crux of the issue is patient care. “The hospital was very ambiguous on the details of the way it restructured,” he said. “The more things become clear, the more things come to the surface; these cuts are definitely going to hurt the community and the patients of Oroville Hospital,” he said.

Each June, the hospital receives

about $9 million from provider fees through the state, said Oroville Hospital CEO Robert Wentz. This year, however, the payment was delayed until January, and the disruption in cash flow was “significant enough to make some adjustments to the operation,” he said. Wentz acknowledged the layoffs came about quickly.

“We determined who was going to be effected in a period of about three weeks,” he said, “and we let them know as soon as we could.”

In an interview with Action News Now on Feb. 24, Montoya categorized the personnel decisions as restructuring in the name of efficiency. “We’re always looking at jobs to restructure positions so that we can continue to meet the demands of health care and also to streamline our operations,” she said.

Montoya was clear that the layoffs wouldn’t impede the hospital’s ability to treat patients: “We’re not going to be in a position where we can’t continue to provide excellent care.”

But many of the employees who were laid off—and some still working for the hospital—maintain otherwise.

Cardwell had just gotten off his third straight 12-hour night shift when he spoke with CN&R. “In every department, the ability to care for patients has become sharply restricted,” he said.

Cardwell questioned whether the hospital has maintained nurse-to-patient ratios required by state law—one nurse for every five patients in most departments—since the layoffs, noting that he’s observed colleagues taking on increasingly heavy workloads.

“There are longer patient waits and fewer people get processed,” he said.

When pressed on how the ratios are enforced, Cardwell said that the system depends on nurses filing formal complaints when the ratios are not met. “But there is an air of intimidation from upper management, so many people are

unwilling to make the complaints, fill out the paperwork and speak out because, darn it, you need a job.”

In her six years at Oroville Hospital, Auletta said, administration “tried very hard” to meet the ratios. “If they were unable to call staff in, they would discharge patients,” she said. “I remember one day, they were eight nurses short.

They discharged a lot of patients that day.”

However, Wentz said the hospital has maintained the same nurse-to-staff ratios throughout the layoff process. “There is absolutely no difference in how we are treating our patients—it’s still quality patient care. All California hospitals are required to maintain the nursing ratios, and we’ve done that for years. That’s never been an issue.”

He also emphasized that patients at Oroville Hospital are never released prematurely to free up space or meet the ratio requirements. “Patients are discharged when they are no longer acutely ill,” he said. “Our hospital has been very busy for years, but no, that’s not a way we manage staffing.”

As for the picketing that will soon be taking place outside of his hospital, Wentz said it’s the nurses’ right to make themselves heard as labor negotiations continue. “I don’t think that it’s something that’s largely supported by staff,” he said. “I think our current employees understand that we’re still providing good-quality care, that we needed to make some adjustments in order to be sustainable, and I think the employees are good with it.”

A bargaining process is outlined

in the hospital’s agreement with the California Nurses Association, Auletta explained. If nurses have a grievance, they present it to hospital administration, which then has seven days to schedule a meeting with the union and the nurses who filed the complaint. By the nurses’ account, hospital administration has refused such a meeting since the layoffs.

“They have taken this directly to their attorneys and refuse to step to the bargaining table,” Auletta said.

As such, the charges filed with the National Labor Relations Board are related to “moving forward unilaterally with things they should have negotiated with the union first, refusing to provide information and general union-busting tactics,” Bartlett said. He believes the nurses’ case is strong, particularly regarding a lack of communication on the hospital’s part. “I have a hard time believing a whole bunch of money was suddenly just not there anymore,” he said. “Somebody should have known this ahead of time.”

From here, the labor board will decide whether to move forward with the charges, a process with an uncertain timeframe, Bartlett said. In the event that the hospital and the union don’t reach an agreement, it’s possible the case could reach federal court. Ω

An apology, but no resignation Mayor agrees council erred on finances apologize for the condition the city is in.”

“I Those words, from Mayor Scott Gruendl, were music to the ears of a number

of people in attendance at the regular Chico City Council meeting Tuesday (March 25).

The council had just accepted a damning audit report for the 2012-13 fiscal year, and several of the usual council scolds— Stephanie Taber, Sue Hubbard, Michael Reilley and John Salyer, among others—had called for someone to be held accountable for the massive fund deficits the audit had uncovered.

“Why haven’t past mayors or [Finance Committee] members resigned because of this scandal?” Salyer asked.

“You should have been skeptical,” Hubbard insisted. “You should have looked.”

Gruendl agreed that council members should have been more alert, but he insisted that resigning would be wrong.

“We did let people down,” he said.

“There’s absolutely no doubt about that. I’m embarrassed. … I could resign and walk away, but I don’t want to leave this mess for somebody else.”

“It had become clear,” Gruendl explained, “that [under the previous administration] difficult decisions could not be made, because of the allegiances, the alliances, the loyalty, whatever you want to call it....”

To the council’s credit, he said, it made the decision to bring in a new city manager—Brian Nakamura—from the outside to put together a new administrative team and make much-needed changes.

When Gruendl concluded his spontaneous apology, he received a round of applause.

The audit, done by Sacramento-based

Vavrinek, Trine, Day and Co., arrived several months late, largely because of disagreements between the auditor and the city over how to handle the several fund deficits— totaling $13.1 million—it uncovered.

The current plan calls for the city’s general fund to absorb the deficits, for the emergency reserve to be used to pay down $5.3 million in fund debts, and for the city to find a way to pay down the remaining $7.7 million general-fund deficit. This will be topic No. 1 during upcoming budget discussions.

The audit also found that the city had not updated its cost-allocation plan since 2001. The city already has moved to fix that situation.

And the audit found eight significant deficiencies in the city’s accounting practices.

The city has agreed with the findings and taken steps to rectify the shortcomings.

The unanswered—and perhaps unanswerable—question was this: How was the city’s previous auditor able to give it a clean bill of

health year after year, and garner it professional plaudits in the bargain, when the city’s finances were in fact such a mess?

The best answer Administrative Services Director Chris Constantin could give was to say that whenever a city changes auditors, the new crew inevitably finds room for improvement. “I tend to look forward,” he said. “We can tackle all of these problems.”

The council voted unanimously, with Mary Goloff absent, to accept the audit report, which concluded that the city’s finances met federal standards.

In other council news: A proposal to reorganize the Public Works Department ran into resistance from council members for a couple of reasons. One was that, although it would result in $43,000 in annual savings overall, it called for salary hikes of up to 15 percent for certain expanded positions.

The other concern was the plan’s elimination of the urban forester position.

Ultimately the council tabled the matter pending a weigh-in on the urban forester from the Bidwell Park and Playground Commission. In a related action, the council sent back a proposal to hire a park services coordinator, asking staff to come up with a lower salary range.

Also, the council approved a new “fraud, waste and abuse” policy and designated Constantin as the city auditor managing it.

Constantin, whose job description seems to get longer every day, is setting up a 24/7/365 hotline for people to report fraud, waste and abuse anonymously. Costs will be absorbed internally, though there is a $1,000 annual fee for the services of a hotline network.

Cannabis confusion Sorting out the many efforts to legalize pot to the California Asixccording Secretary of State’s Office, initiatives to legalize mari-

juana are currently being circulated for signature gathering. In reality, there are only four, as two were early iterations of what’s essentially the same petition created by the same supporters.

That’s just one of the reasons this year’s legalization efforts are confusing. Then, there is some talk that those pushing the initiatives may back off this election year, join forces and aim for 2016, a presidential election year when greater numbers of younger and liberal voters will most likely go to the polls.

There’s a common theme through all of the initiatives.

Each basically calls for the legalization of recreational pot, similar to what was approved in Colorado and Washington during the presidential election two years ago.

One of them, the Cannabis Policy Reform Act of 2014, qualified on March 13 and petitioners have until Aug. 11 to collect 504,760 valid voter signatures. It was written by Ed Rosenthal, a former columnist for High Times magazine and proponent of Proposition 215, which legalized the use of medical marijuana in California when it passed 18 years ago.

Rosenthal’s proposal says that existing pot laws have created “a violent, criminal drug market” in which millions of dollars are spent each year enforcing marijuana laws rather than preventing violent crime. It suggests that existing pot laws “have a disproportionate impact on African-American and Latino communities.”

Rosenthal was out of the country and could not be reached for comment, but Beth Fitzer, the woman who answered the number listed on the petition, said Rosenthal was dropping the signature-gathering effort to join with a group called the Drug Policy Alliance and will try again in 2016.

According to its website, the DPA “is actively involved in the legislative process and seeks to roll back the excesses of the drug war, block new, harmful initiatives, and promote sensible drug policy reforms.”

The Control, Regulate

and Tax Marijuana Act got the go-ahead from the secretary of state on Feb. 6, allowing supporters until July 7 to collect signatures. The proponent for this measure is listed as Sara Behmerwohld, who is connected to the Sutton Law Firm in San Francisco.

The petition says that current state laws “have failed to prevent minors from accessing marijuana” and, like Rosenthal’s, notes that millions are spent each year “enforcing marijuana laws that could otherwise be spent preventing and solving violent crimes and propertyrelated crimes.”

Existing laws also have allowed the creation of drug cartels and “contributed to environmental degradation,” the measure says. If passed into law, it would deny access to pot to those under the age of 21, prohibit marijuana advertising aimed at the same age group, and tax the sale of marijuana “in order to generate hundreds of millions of dollars in new revenue annually for K-12 after-school programs, drug and alcohol prevention and treatment programs, local governments, and environmental restoration.”

It would also keep intact current laws pertaining to driving under the influence of marijuana, maintain the right of employers to enforce workplace policies on marijuana, and prevent the “illegal diversion of marijuana from California to

other states or to the illegal market.”

Proponents of the initiative could not be reached for comment.

The latest version of The Marijuana Control, Legalization and Revenue Act of 2014 was recognized by the state on Jan. 31, allowing supporters until June 30 to gather signatures. Those supporters are listed as John Lee, Bob Bowerman, Dege Coutee and Dave Hodges.

If passed, the measure “grants to Californians the freedom to use, grow, transport and sell cannabis subject to reasonable regulation and taxation in a manner similar to alcohol.” It argues that the social benefits of pot prohibition “are vastly outweighed by the costs of investigating, arresting, prosecuting and incarcerating otherwise law-abiding citizens.”

The California Cannabis Hemp Initiative of 2014 is promoted by a Simi Valley man named Berton Duzy and received state approval March 21, giving circulators until Aug. 18 to gather signatures. The wording says, “No person, business, or corporate entity shall be arrested or prosecuted, be denied any right or privilege, nor be subject to any criminal or civil penalties for the possession, cultivation, transportation, distribution, use, or consumption of cannabis hemp marijuana.”

Efforts to qualify the initiative failed when fewer than 500,000 signatures were gathered by the initial February deadline, so proponent Duzy resubmitted.

In a story published last month in the Sacramento News & Review, Duzy said he had not yet abandoned his efforts this year. However, he also said, “We’ll go up against DPA and NORML in 2016, and try to get ours to qualify.”

The ball is mightier Chico State grad uses soccer balls to take on poverty in Africa bout a month before his arrival in Anative Niger, Africa, in 2011, Chico Michael Mitchell received dis-

turbing news: two Peace Corps volunteers in that country had been kidnapped and killed by militants linked to the terrorist network al-Qaida.

Many of Mitchell’s friends and family, fearing for his safety, urged him not to go. But Mitchell considered his mission too important. “I get there, and sure enough, there’s all these Tuaregs—the nomads who live out in the desert—staring at me,” he said.

Sensing their hostility, Mitchell decided to make a peace offering. “I went out to the car, got a soccer ball, kicked it to them, and the aggression just went away.”

For the former Chico State soccer player, who now lives and coaches soccer in Brazil, the soccer ball has represented more than a game—it’s a community-building tool, a means to alleviate suffering and a general “miracle worker,” Mitchell said. He’s seen first-hand the effect a ball can have on schoolchildren in Niger, one of the world’s poorest countries.

“They don’t have anything at these schools,” he said. “You can’t imagine it—there’s no running water, there’s no electricity, maybe a mud hut or hay hut [school building]. One ball will change their lives.”

Through his brainchild, Project Play, Mitchell has donated thousands of soccer balls to schools in Niger and other African countries over the past two decades, expanding the project’s vision each time he returns. His efforts recently received a big boost: a $500,000 grant through One World Futbol and Chevrolet that will allow Project Play to distribute 11,750 soccer balls to 4,500 different schools.

Mitchell estimates that, as a result of the grant, some 100,000 African children will no longer have to make due with makeshift soccer balls—often just bits of plastic garbage rolled together.

coach Mike O’Malley has seen Project Play develop from an idea into a largescale operation. “It’s been fun to see how it’s grown each time he goes back [to Niger],” O’Malley said. “It’s really great to see him focus his energies on something as beautiful as this socialentrepreneurial project.”

Mitchell was preparing to leave Chico to join a collegiate all-star soccer team that would tour eight African countries, and he didn’t know what to pack.

“My brother said, ‘Don’t worry about clothes, just take as many soccer balls as you can—you’ll make all kinds of friends and you can get clothes once you’re there,’” O’Malley said.

The desperate poverty Mitchell encountered in Niger affected him profoundly, as did the schoolchildren’s reaction to the seemingly simple gift of a soccer ball. “If you’ve got a ball, you’re smiling, you’re interacting,” Mitchell said. “You’re not thinking about how bad it is—you’re thinking about touching the ball.”

After earning a bachelor’s degree from Chico State, he returned to Niger as a member of the Peace Corps in 1983. Eight years later, he completed his master’s degree in sports psychology at Chico State, and his thesis laid the groundwork for Project Play. By 2011, Mitchell had given away about 4,000 soccer balls.

In a press release, Blue Shield and Adventist Health touted the recently launched initiative as a means to “reduce travel time and expense for patients while increasing their access to highquality care.”

By visiting an Adventist Health site, patients will be able to seek advice and diagnoses from health specialists not available in their area. An onsite clinical coordinator will use diagnostic equipment such as an electronic stethoscope, vital-signs monitor, and high definition camera to send data, images and audio to the specialist.

Many people signing up for health care coverage through Obamacare won’t have access to the top cancer centers in the U.S., according to an Associated Press survey.

Of the 19 nationally recognized comprehensive cancer centers contacted in the survey, only four said patients have access through all of the insurance companies in their states’ exchanges.

Prior to implementation of the Affordable Care Act, a cancer diagnosis could effectively make an individual uninsurable. Now that insurance companies can’t turn patients with existing health problems away or charge them more— or institute lifetime dollar limits on policies— insurers have set up narrow networks of hospitals and doctors in order to keep premiums low.

An insurer can further cut costs and minimize risk by not including top cancer centers.

KIDS THINK PRODUCE IS GARBAGE

Though many American elementary schools are serving more fruit and vegetables at lunchtime, much of it ends up in the trash, a study finds.

Federal guidelines introduced last year require that schools serve at least one serving of fruit or vegetables with each meal in order to get full funding for the free and reduced-price school lunch program, according to SFGate.com. The study, in which researchers at Cornell and Brigham Young universities looked at lunchrooms at 18 elementary schools, found that kids are throwing away up to 70 percent of the fruits and veggies served to them.

It costs about $5.4 million to provide the produce to the 31.6 million children the National School Lunch Program serves; the study’s authors estimated that about $3.8 million of the food is thrown away.

The authors also worked on a related study that suggested kids are more likely to eat fruits and veggies if they’re sliced rather than served whole.

Read Hawthorne—a best-selling author, editor and motivational speaker—it has a broader meaning. She embraces a medical model that incorporates psychology and spirituality for a holistic take on well-being.

She’ll bring that perspective to the North State next Thursday, April 3, with her keynote address at Enloe Medical Center’s Heart of a Woman wellness event.

“For our keynote speaker, we were looking for someone who would inspire women, make us laugh and, more important, give encouragement to lead a healthy lifestyle,” said Nicole Johansson, director of the Enloe Marketing & Communications department. “Jennifer Read Hawthorne’s previous books, including Chicken Soup for the Woman’s Soul, and her most current book, Life Lessons for Loving the Way You Live, which she will be speaking about, give the perfect message for this event.”

Hawthorne will speak for about an hour, sharing stories from her books along with some of her own experiences, and then meet conference attendees.

“When we see how the human spirit can make a leap that not only gets us past an obstacle but on the other side of it shining, that’s really valuable,” Hawthorne said in a phone interview from her home in Florida.

She travels extensively, delivering 10 keynote addresses a year, along with writ-

ing and editing books, such as her entries in the Chicken Soup for the Soul series.

“Mind-body-spirit is a very beautiful phrase to me,” she said. “This is an event that’s sponsored by a medical center, and in our society we so tend to think of health in terms of the physical alone; I go for my annual check-up, and that’s always a physical check-up—but who ever checks us mentally? Who ever checks us spiritually, on the level of the heart?

“Those are areas I think we sometimes forget we need to pay attention to and that we need to nourish.”

To that end, she’s worked with Chicken Soup for the Soul Publishing since the mid1990s. Hawthorne included early Chicken Soup material in her public speaking, then approached co-founder Jack Canfield with a book idea that blossomed into Chicken Soup for the Woman’s Soul—the 1996 bestseller she co-authored with Canfield, Mark Victor Hansen and Marci Shimoff.

The next year, she co-authored Chicken

Soup for the Mother’s Soul, which also reached No. 1 on The New York Times best-seller list.

“To those of us involved with those books, it really showed us how hungry people were for inspiration,” Hawthorne said. “It just felt that the media was so filled with negativity so much of the time, and there seemed to be a hunger for things that were positive, things that were good, stories that really showed that everyone has obstacles to overcome.

“That’s really a huge theme with the Chicken Soup for the Soul books—I think there’s a chapter in almost every volume about overcoming obstacles—and I think that it’s really comforting when you see what those people go through,” she said.

“Sometimes it puts your own situation in perspective.”

Most Americans say environmental protection should be given priority—even over economic growth—but the division across party lines on the issue is great, a Gallup poll finds.

The survey, conducted in early March, revealed that Americans favor environmental protection over economic growth by a margin of 50 percent to 41 percent. In the 30 years since Gallup started asking the question, Americans have almost always favored environmental protection; for instance, in 1990 and 1991, the split was 71 percent to 19 percent. But since 2009—in the middle of the economic downturn—Americans began prioritizing economic growth over the environment, except for immediately after BP’s Deepwater Horizon oil spill in May 2010.

Democrats and Republicans are deeply divided: About two-thirds of Democrats say the environment should be a greater priority, while only a third of Republicans favor prioritizing protections.

FEDS LAUNCH CLIMATE WEBSITE

The White House has launched a new project designed to make climate data more accessible to individuals and organizations trying to adapt to the changing climate.

The federal government’s open-data platform now includes a climate-specific section (which can be viewed at www.climate.data.gov).

The project also includes an innovation challenge aimed at soliciting ideas from the private sector on how to demonstrate coastal flooding and collaboration with companies like Google and Ersi to provide technological support.

The website currently focuses on coastal flooding and sea-level-rise projections, including maps and tools from inside and outside the federal government, but the site will eventually include data on other climate-related threats.

BP TO EXPLORE NEW HORIZONS

Four years after the Deepwater Horizon oil rig explosion, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has approved oil giant BP’s return to the Gulf of Mexico.

The EPA and BP reached an agreement on March 20, effectively lifting the ban imposed in 2012 when federal regulators determined BP had not taken corrective measures in the aftermath of the explosion (pictured), which killed 11 rig workers and contaminated hundreds of miles of beaches along the Gulf Coast, according to The New York Times.

Under the agreement, BP can bid for new leases so long as the company meets requirements for ethics, corporate governance and safety procedures outlined by the EPA. An independent auditor will conduct an annual review and report on BP’s compliance with the new standards.

The consumer activist group Public Citizen said in a statement that the EPA is letting a “corporate felon and repeat offender off the hook for its crimes against people and the environment.”

Cgrowing his own vegetables in a backyard garden soon after he moved in 2000 to hico native Bill Carter began

Bisbee, Ariz., where he met his wife and would eventually have a small family. But just weeks after his first garden harvest, Carter found himself in the hospital— poisoned, it turned out, by his own homegrown vegetables.

Specifically, he was poisoned by arsenic, a common byproduct of open-pit mining. For just adjacent to the town of Bisbee is the Copper Queen Mine. Operations at this massive open pit first began in 1881, were closed in 1975, and produced heaps of poison-laced waste rubble over what would later be residential neighborhoods. Though Carter and his family eventually left the town of 6,000 people and resettled in Flagstaff, keen on living a healthier life, Carter’s fascination with the copper industry persisted.

Now, the author and activist—who is known for having teamed up with Bono and U2 in the 1990s to help bring peace to the war-torn Balkans—is about to release

the second edition of Boom, Bust, Boom: A Story About Copper, the Metal that Runs the World. The book, updated from its 2013 release, details the gritty reality of the global mining industry that produces one of the world’s most essential metals.

To extract copper, which is used in electronics, piping systems, and various tools and coins, landscapes are turned inside out. Truckloads of raw earth are washed with cyanide and mercury to loosen the target metal. These toxins often find their way into waterways. From there, mercury ascends the food chain and accumulates in fish like tuna, swordfish and sharks. Meanwhile, the heaps of discarded debris—called tailings—left at defunct mines leach out sulfuric acid, lead and arsenic. This poison may flow into major waterways, killing wildlife. Or, it may remain onsite, tainting soil where an investigative journalist may one day plant a vegetable garden.

In an interview with the CN&R,

Carter said that many mining operators take responsibility for their sites, restoring them to some degree of intactness after the mine is fully tapped of its valuable metals and closed. But thousands of mining sites small and large, defunct and active, have caused immeasurable pollution throughout the American West.

The retired Berkeley Pit Mine near Butte, Mont., and the active Bingham Canyon Mine not far from Salt Lake City, Utah, are two of the most appalling examples—each a huge scar on the Earth’s surface that bleeds poison into the environment. In Indonesia, the Grasberg Mine, owned by Freeport McMoRan, is one of the most infamous open-pit mines.

California’s worst relic of the copper mining era is the Iron Mountain Richmond Mine, just north of Redding. First begun in the 1860s, mining operations there wreaked their usual havoc on the landscape as laborers and rail cars undid millions of years of geologic mountain building. Huge piles of tailings were deposited in the adjacent hills as miners went deeper into Iron Mountain to extract ore. The copper mine became the biggest in California.

Today, it is one of the most toxic sites in America, and one the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is working to clean up.

Such a blight to the landscape may have just been averted in Alaska, where an enormous mining project was recently rejected by the EPA. The proposed Pebble Mine project had been looming over environmentalists and resident Alaskans for years and likely would have destroyed watersheds that support the most prolific salmon populations in the world—those of Bristol Bay. But the agency ruled the project to be a serious threat to natural resources and a violation of the Clean Water Act. The decision, Carter says, was monumental and a tremendous sign of hope.

“There is no history of shutting down a mine of this size,” he said.

“To me, it’s a very good sign.”

But the world, in its modern age, needs copper—or wants it, anyway.

After detailing the environmental and social injustices of the global mining industry in Boom, Bust, Boom, Carter writes in the book’s epilogue that 9 million iPhones were purchased by Americans virtually overnight in September of 2013, when Apple released its 5s and 5c models. These phones, he points out, each contain 16 grams of copper.

“This is why stopping Pebble Mine, or any mine, is hard to do,” Carter writes. “Consumer demand drives mining companies’ appetites for rich new deposits. They know our demand will grow, an insatiable craving ... ” Fortunately, explains Carter, there are appropriate and relatively

But copper mining in Indonesia, Africa, Central America and Columbia is a different story.

Mines there are hotspots of deforestation, death and pollution. As the population grows, and as more and more people plug themselves in to the modern digital world, more copper will be needed to keep the electricity flowing. Pollution of water and soil will follow.

“We’re eventually going to get to a place where we need to decide what’s more important, our iPhones or our water and food,” Carter said. Ω

Who is this Pope Francis? Time magazine named him “Per-

son of the Year.” So did MTV’s 24-hour college network.

And so did LGBT magazine The Advocate, calling him “the single most influential person of 2013 on the lives of LGBT people.” He even graced the cover of Rolling Stone.

Time said, “Francis has elevated the healing mission of the church—the church as servant and comforter of hurting people in an often harsh world—above the doctrinal police work so important to his recent predecessors.” Italian media nicknamed him the World’s Parish Priest.

Pope Francis’ rock-star-like ascension in the age of the expanding wealth gap

Perhaps it was Elton John, though, who hit on why the new pope has so captured the world’s attention. The pop singer called Francis “a miracle of humility in an era of vanity.”

The stories by now have become wellknown: of a cardinal archbishop who cooked his own meals, rode public transit, and made his own phone calls while serving in Argentina. He brought that same humility to the Vatican when he was elected pope one year ago this month. He is plainspoken and has rejected much of the papacy’s former pomp. He lives in a Vatican guesthouse, Room 201. He celebrates Mass daily with gardeners and cleaners.

But simple humility isn’t enough—Francis is also trying to enact a transformation, both within the church and outside of it.

The cardinal electors said they were looking for a holy man who could engage the wider culture and who could bring new life to the staid bureaucracy of the Vatican. They got that and more with Francis, who quickly set about the task of reform. One of his first moves was to assemble a council of eight cardinals—none of whom are so-called Vatican insiders—to advise him on church reform. He then took steps to clean up two of the most egregious areas of scandal in the church—its finances and its sexual abuse epidemic—by appointing a professional committee to oversee the corruption-stained Vatican bank and a commission of child protection experts to advise him directly on issues of clerical sexual abuse.

Representatives from Francis’ council of cardinals have agreed the church must address procedures to deal with bishops who covered up abuse, whose relative impunity has been a source of great frustration among abuse-survivor advocates and ordinary Catholics.

Standing with the have-nots But why should anyone besides Catholics care about Francis’ reform agenda?

Despite the media’s portrayal of Francis, Burke said, this pope “is not a fan of cheap grace and feel-good religion.” While the media focus has largely been on Francis’ pastoral agenda, Burke said that he believes history will remember Francis for standing with the have-nots of this world.

And Francis has indicated that himself. In an interview with veteran Italian journalist Eugenio Scalfari about what he defines as the most pressing issues of the day, Francis said: “The most serious of the evils that afflict the world these days are youth unemployment and the loneliness of the old. They have been crushed by the present. This, to me, is the most urgent problem that the church is facing.”

economic problems for states, governments, political parties and trade unions to address.

Francis replied, “Yes, you are right, but [they] also [concern] the church, in fact, particularly the church because this situation does not hurt only bodies but also souls. The church must feel responsible for both souls and bodies.”

What Francis meant by this decree about bodies and souls was made clear in “The Joy of the Gospel,” his apostolic exhortation released Nov. 24, 2013, also known by its Latin title: Evangelii Gaudium. Francis writes that the mission of the church is to remove the desolation and anguish from the human heart—and when violence is caused by an unjust economic system, that system must be reformed.

Condescension from the right But, a secular audience might ask, does the church have the power to fix these problems?

Francis knows the potential the church has to bring structural change, and he wants all elements of it engaged. First and foremost, he has a membership of 1.2 billion Catholics whom he wants to inspire to personally commit to aiding the marginalized. The church sponsors and staffs thousands of Catholic schools and universities around the world, and Francis wants them all teaching the church’s social message. He wants graduates of these schools, who often hold key positions in nations’ civil and business spheres, grounded in his pro-social gospel. Catholics control a huge global network of social ministries—and all this gives its members an outlet to effect change.

Evangelii Gaudium provides clues as to what that change would entail. The document rails against the present global economic system, explaining that “such an economy kills.”

That is no way to live a dignified and fulfilled life; it is not God’s will for us.”

“It is very interesting to me how the world has responded so positively to Pope Francis. Interesting because the controversial positions of the Vatican that often go against majority cultural opinion—stands on things like abortion, same-sex marriage and the ordination of women—haven’t really changed. What’s changed is the attitude. Pope Francis is strong on his positions but seems open to dialogue.

More importantly, he is humble and willing to listen to differing opinions.

From what I can tell, Pope Francis is a servant leader and full of integrity. He genuinely loves all people, including the marginalized, the poor and the outcasts. It seems to me that most people, both inside and outside the church, know that this is what Jesus did and therefore what our church leaders also should do. Pope Francis is focusing on what the church should focus on and is trying to avoid issues that divide people. In that sense, he is a bridge builder and a very good one at that! Political conservatives have largely written off Evangelii Gaudium. Most were subtler than Rush Limbaugh, who declared that Francis was spewing “pure Marxism,” but they were just as dismissive.

In a representative response, Samuel Gregg, writing for the National Review Online, conceded that it is the pope’s place to denounce greed and plead for better care of the poor, but that in most of Evangelii Gaudium, the pope is clearly out of his depth.

“Evangelii Gaudium seems, alas, unaware [that] many povertyalleviation methods that involve redistribution (such as foreign aid) are increasingly discredited,” Gregg wrote, and his condescension is almost palpable when he adds, “My critique is by no means intended to imply that all of Pope Francis’ observations about economic life are naive or simply mistaken.”

Winters. He wrote: “To be clear, the pope was not speaking of economic theory in the abstract. He was describing the world he sees and knows. Francis has never had the pleasure of attending a lecture at the pro-market Acton Institute, but he knows the slums.

He was president of the Argentine Episcopal Conference during that country’s sovereign debt crisis. It may be true that there is no thoroughly unfettered market economy, but he has seen enough unfettering to garner what can only be deemed a stern, insistent and humanely sophisticated condemnation.”

Winters gets at the heart of what makes Francis’ economic message in Evangelii Gaudiumso resonant and why his words have a power that those of earlier popes did not have: Francis speaks with the authority of lived experiences.

Humble beginnings Born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in 1936 in Argentina, Pope Francis came of age in a political climate that saw the rise and fall of populist leader Juan Domingo Perón and his second wife, Eva Perón. Bergoglio was an adherent of so-called Peronism, which Francis biographer Paul Vallely describes as “a curious amalgam of forces not normally associated with one another: the military, the trade unions and the church.”

In Pope Francis: Untying the Knots, Vallely writes that Peronism “had its roots in one of the major documents in the history of Catholic Social Teaching—an encyclical [from 1931] called Quadragesimo Anno” that sought to establish a potential third way between capitalism and communism.

Vallely also writes that from the time he entered high school, Bergoglio was expected to help support the family financially. While attending school, he worked in a series of jobs that included menial and manual labor. A working-class upbringing coupled with the Peronist influences of his early adulthood imbued Bergoglio with an understanding of labor and poverty that few in his clerical class have experienced.

Yet as a priest, Bergoglio formed a rigid, traditionalist theology and heavily pietistic spirituality that put him at odds with the emerging new theological movement that would be known as liberation theology.

Liberation theology teaches that sin can reside inside societal structures as much as in a person and that the aim of the gospel is liberation of the world’s people from unjust economic or social conditions. As it developed in Latin America during the region’s military dictatorships in the 1960s and ’70s, it brought its adherents into direct conflict with the sometimes violent political structures of the day.

Such political aspects of liberation theology were off-putting to Bergoglio, who by 1973 was leading his Jesuit religious order in Argentina. Though Bergolgio had a strong sense of charity for the poor and disadvantaged in Argentina, Vallely writes that his rejection of social justice put him in fierce conflict with many fellow Jesuits. Vallely details how he spent the middle decades of his adulthood reconciling the divergent views.

The root of the issue His current worldview appears to have cohered, however, when he was archbishop of Buenos Aires and witnessed Argentina’s economic crisis of 2001. Even as he castigated the greed of individual politicians and business leaders, he also addressed the need for structural change. Vallely quotes from a statement issued by Bergoglio as parishes began to open food programs for the needy: “We are tired of systems that produce poor people so that then the church can support them.”

Vallely writes: “The man who was once the scourge of liberation theology began to see, as national leader, that there was weight to aspects of liberation theologians’ analysis that sin could reside in structures as well as in the bad behavior of individuals in positions of power.”

That explains much of how Francis has arrived at his current economic views. But again, why should non-Catholics care about those views? Because Francis says in Evangelii Gaudium that his reform plan aims not at self-preservation but at fulfilling the church’s missionary mandate—removing the anguish caused by individual and social sin. Again, he’s trying to save bodies and souls. When he writes in Evangelii Gaudium that his reforms aim at bringing the full force of “the church’s customs, ways of doing things, times and schedules, language and structures” to meeting that mandate, he is committing the church’s full resources—those 1.2 billion adherents, thousands of schools and thousands of aid workers—to the cause.

And because he has the power to appoint bishops in dioceses across the world, from Chicago to Bougainville in Papua New Guinea, when Francis stands with the havenots, he won’t be standing alone. Ω

That’s the short version. The concept is far more elaborate and crude (details include: six-foot subs, neon from bar signs being stolen for fuel, aquatic beastiality porn, wet bagels, the FBI). Shapiro and Godfrey have been working on this project since joining forces 12 years ago in Gresham, Ore., a strip-mall infested suburb just east of Portland.

Musically, they say it’s not what people might expect; it’s not what I expected. mARMITs’ one fulllength, Beast Extract, is a spaced-out cross between Frank Zappa and Gary Numan, only with more drugs. Shapiro pointed out how the band’s appear26 CN&R March 27, 2014

ance elicits all sorts of misconceptions.

“People think it’s going to be free jazz, or noisy,” he explained. “We like intensity, but we like to mess with the hook. We like to get people dancing.”

Shapiro tossed out names like Ween and 1990s experimental weirdos Men’s Recovery Project as influences. In Portland, mARMITs has operated on the fringe, which only adds to their mystique.

They’ve remained outsiders for more than a decade, as both the city and music scene have grown and changed around them. In Portland, Shapiro said they tend to play with bands that are “off the grid” (he mentioned the excellent Rllrbll and Aranya).

The perception of the band has changed over time as well. Once looked at as possibly a joke, an oddity, or both, people seemed to have embraced the band—it helps that their music doesn’t suck. At the same time, the members have learned to cope and play their roles.

“It’s gotten better. In the early aughts people were a little scared,” Shapiro said. “Sometimes we get a little off-response. I used to be like, ‘fuck you.’ Now I just go up and talk to people.” He does so in character, of course, which was how our entire interview went down. I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Neither would Shapiro or Godfrey.

“It’s like letting another part of your brain breathe,” explained Shapiro of the band’s visual element. “We just spread it around—spread the hope.

We just like the power of rock to uplift people from the day-to-day.”

A lot of what they said reminded me of interviews I’ve seen with bands like KISS and Alice Cooper. Why go to a show to watch five musicians stare at their feet? Reactions can be mixed, but artists with a presumed “gimmick” aren’t going to last if their music isn’t any good. And some of the responsibility falls on audiences. “It kind of depends on what kind of fun a town is willing to have,” Shapiro said. And the more intimate the show, the better. “I like when [people] squeeze together. It’s like a Thanksgiving Day of aroma.” Ω

The 800-acre University Farm, or, more accurately, the Paul L. Byrne Agricultural Teaching and Research Center, was established in 1960 to provide hands-on educational opportunities for Chico State ag students, who work on all aspects of farming, from composting and irrigation to animal raising and equipment maintenance. There’s also an organic vegetable project.

In the Meats Lab, students learn butchering, meat preparation and preservation, and marketing, offering for sale to the public a wide variety of cuts of beef, pork and lamb, as well as sausages, bacon, pastrami and seasonal items (including turkeys at Thanksgiving by special order). They also sell to local eateries, including the Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. Taproom and Restaurant.

der ($3.75), two huge porterhouse steaks ($9.75), a pound of cottage bacon ($6.25), and three varieties of sausages (Polish, Texas, and Louisiana hots— $4.50-$5 per each four-pack).

I cooked the corned beef for four hours in a Crock-Pot, adding a tablespoon each of whole cloves, allspice and peppercorns, a sliced onion, and a bottle of Guinness—it came out tender, moist and delicious, especially when slathered in Sierra Nevada Pale Ale mustard. For sides, I fried half the cottage bacon (cut from the shoulder, not the belly) and tossed in some cabbage and sautéed it in the rendered bacon fat, and Colette roasted some new potatoes with butter and rosemary. We washed it all down with more Guinness and by evening’s end Henri was feeling a wee bit like a Clancy Brother.

Next week, we’re going to head back out and pick up that leg of lamb. Can’t wait to revisit one of my favorite recipes.

Henri’s grilled spring lamb Trim excess fat from one butterflied leg of lamb and place in large, sealable garbage bag. In a large bowl, mix four cloves minced garlic, 1/4 cup dried rosemary, 1/4 cup lemon juice, 1/2 teaspoon black pepper, 1/2 teaspoon Kosher salt, 1/2 teaspoon ground anise, and one cup plain yogurt, and pour into bag with the lamb. Seal bag and set in large pan and refrigerate overnight.

Drain lamb, saving marinade, and place on grill over rosemary sprigs. Cook for about 50 minutes or to an internal temperature of 140 degrees, marinating every 10 minutes or so.

Serve with rosemary-and-butter-sautéed new potatoes, fresh green beans or asparagus, a crisp green salad and warm French bread—and the Guinness, of course, or good Italian red wine, such as a rich Barolo or a lighter Barbaresco. Ω

during the theater’s 2004 and 2005 seasons, it’s been a cruel decade of waiting. The funny, grungy love story—about an East German transby Jason sexual and the botched sex-change Cassidy operation that transformed her into a jasonc@ tragic rock diva—was the talk of the newsreview.com town. The universally acclaimed show packed the theater for both runs and remains the top-grossing show in Blue Room history.

Then it was gone. Not wanting to diminish the success by having to replace any of the crucial parts of the Preview: special, stellar cast and crew—which Hedwig and the included director Jeremy Votava, Angry Inch shows dynamic musician/actor Matt HamThurs.-Sat., mons (who was born to play the title 7:30 p.m., with role), and the kick-ass band powered bonus 11 p.m. by the huge voice of Gina Tropea and showings (with 10:30 p.m. pre- eccentric bandleader Maurice shows featuring Spencer—they decided to not bring it local musicians) back in the following seasons. on Fri. & Sat. CN&R: Why bring Hedwig back now?

Jeremy Votava: I can’t tell you how many times [we] heard, “When are you guys going to do Hedwig again?” It was like, you know, we did it. We did it twice.

So, 10 years later, members of the Blue Room just contacted me, saying, “Hey, there’s been some talk about it.” The board knew it had been 10 years. I was like, “Wow, it might take some doing, but let me put the feelers out.” And Matt was the first one I asked, of course. And then knowing Spencer was in Portland, he was number two. And then we rounded up the usual suspects and got them all back.

Which was thrilling, because 10 years is a long time. A lot of us have kids and families and some of us have more jobs now, more commitments. But everybody was very excited to come back, not only just to do this show—because it is such a fun spectacle of show—but the mini-reunion of getting to

work together.

At what point did you realize you were on to something with Hedwig?

Honestly, when I first heard the CD and read the script, I knew it was going to be special. [And] those first couple band rehearsals when I heard the music and I knew it was there. And I knew Matt could sing his ass off—Gina as well. They complement each other vocally so much.

It’s just a great fit. And we’re all buddies. Actually, I would say, and Matt would agree, that these are all some of our best friends over the years. They’re just good people who we’re excited to have back and work with.

What is it about Hedwig that catches people’s imagination?

The general public, when you tell them the idea of it, they kind of snicker. You know, they chuckle. And really, when it comes down to it, it’s about love. It’s a love story, but it’s also a sad story, and it’s a rock show. It’s all these things—a musical-comedydrama—but the one thing that really hits home for me is the story of “The Origin of Love,” one of the songs.

It’s the concept that humans were once round, twofaced, four-armed, four-legged beings, and then God came down and split them in two, leaving them separated people with a lifelong yearning for their other half. So, it’s like your soul mate. You’re searching your whole life to reconnect with your other half that you were split from. That’s what Hedwig’s deal is.

She’s been searching her whole life.

How did it feel to be in the middle of a play packed with enthusiastic audiences every night?

With Hedwig, I wanted to be there every night.

And I was there every night. It was a different feeling for me because people loved it so much.

I was the guy, when they say, “Lift up your hands” at the end, I was waving my arms in the air like I just didn’t care, and man, I was almost in tears for the curtain call, or the encore. I was blown away every night, and I was excited to watch it every night. It’s a rock show that never gets old to me, and the performances are so great by every single person up there. I’m just really looking forward to this show, making it bigger and better—a rock and roll spectacle, you know? Ω March 27, 2014

In order for Necrophone Games and Adult Swim Games to take subjective comedy, hand over narrative control to the players, and still have the laughs land, they couldn’t overthink things—and Jazzpunk overthinks very little. In a world ruled by retrofuturistic Soviet-era espionage, quirky imagination and pop-culture references, players take first-person control of an agent sent on various missions largely involving minigames. Jazzpunk doesn’t reinvent the wheel when it comes to minigames but it puts some awesome rims on it (a wedding-themed parody of Quake is one example). The humor is integrated into the gameplay in a consistent and interactive manner so that it doesn’t slow down or deter from the game. From the hilarious one-liners nonplayable characters deliver when incessantly clicked upon— particularly the hobos and a Hunter S. Thompson–esque drunk—to the trippy, psychedelic scenes you’re thrust into, Jazzpunk is the rare game that you enjoy playing for the experience. It’s over all too quickly, but a few hours of unique, ridiculously funny gaming is far better for our souls than a 70-plus hour blockbuster that buries the enjoyment in rehashed gameplay and grueling completion achievements.

In the first installment of his planned Southern Reach trilogy, author Jeff VanderMeer strips away the details from a thrilling mystery and taps into our primal and cultural associations through vague simplicity. Via the journal of an unnamed botanist and expedition member, readers descend into Area X—a diverse ecosystem reclaimed by a twisted version of nature after being cut off from the rest of the world for decades. The government has sent the expedition—and, tragically, 11 previous ones—into Area X for answers, but soon it’s obvious no one is asking the right questions. VanderMeer crafts Area X as an unknown frontier filled with symbols and concepts devoid of quantifiable information—a nightmarish world for an already haunted scientist desperate for data. A rifle, microscope, lighthouse, tunnel, senseless writing on a wall, and beasts bellowing unseen in the night become attempts to control, understand and find hope in a journey into madness with an everlurking hidden danger. The biggest shock for readers comes with the realization that the answers we’ve been desperate for since page one are what we end up fearing the most—not a fear of uncovering the ghastly truths behind Area X, but rather losing the mysteries that made the journey so irresistibly engrossing.

Generally speaking, female jazz musicians are more apt to be found making a career in music by playing the piano, flute, alto saxophone, violin, bass, guitar or drums. Thus it comes as a rather pleasant surprise to discover Camille Thurman, a 27-year-old who, after “discovering Dexter Gordon,” switched from alto to tenor saxophone. On this, her debut CD, she also plays her first instrument, flute, as well as soprano sax; and she sings. It turns out, her voice is definitely an acquired taste, but her tenor sax playing is warm and robust, which is most evident on the relaxed “Kindred Minds,” which also features some fine rhythm work by bassist Corcoran Holt, drummer Rudy Royston and one of the two pianists—Luis Perdomo or Enoch Smith Jr. Thurman gets up to speed on her tenor sax on both the title track (great piano solo

by Perdomo) and her unique and delightful reworking of the Fats Waller classic “Jitterbug Waltz” with considerable help from the rhythm section.

“The Dreamweaverer” showcases her soprano sax skills in company with harpist Brandee Younger. Thurman and her tenor sax also make a lively guest appearance on Humility: Purity of My Soul, the new CD by drummer and label mate Shirazette Tinnin, who also appears on two Origins tracks.

Even with its relatively brief running time, Tim’s Vermeer lags a bit at times. Fortunately, nearly everything about Jenison is interesting and the film’s detailed account of his project works especially well as the portrait of a special kind of genius in which mechanical savvy, artistic inspiration and freewheeling combinations of imagination and curiosity play very lively roles.

As directed by Teller (with on-screen commentary from Penn Jillette), the film as a whole is impressive for what it shows and a little disappointing in its casual and rather glib approach to the issues it raises. Jenison’s replica looks good, but the implications, artistic and otherwise, of that project deserve a more careful and thorough examination. Ω

most compelling part of the movie. Too bad it accounts for only a few minutes. Rise of an Empire is slightly better than, say, your average direct-to-video sequel or prequel, but without Gerard Butler starring or Zach Snyder directing, it’s ultimately inferior to the first movie. Veronica Mars

Veronica Mars is very much a film for the fans. Considering it was crowd-sourced through Kickstarter, this should be comforting. And it is. But it also limits the possibilities for attracting new fans, as so much of the film is rooted in the TV show’s past. I must admit here to total Veronica Mars geekdome. So when the opening credits rolled and Kristen Bell’s familiar voice began narrating, I settled right back into a comfortable place. All the main characters are back, and surprisingly little has changed in the seven years since the show went off the air. When a pop star is found murdered, Veronica’s ex-flame Logan Echolls (Jason Dohring) finds himself accused. Naturally, Logan calls up his favorite PI for help with the case, bringing Veronica back to Neptune just in time for their 10-year high school reunion. It’s fun to get an update on everyone’s lives, particularly that of the eversassy Veronica. Some plot points seem superfluous, though, as if writer/director Rob Thomas needed to fit a character in somehow. Others, like the fact that the murdered pop star went to Neptune High, seem unnecessarily contrived. But while that may bother a critic, it won’t likely deter any fans.

300: Rise of an Empire

A good, nasty central villain performance and some decent visuals keep 300: Rise of an Empire from being truly awful. In the end, it’s just marginally bad. Director Noam Murro’s take on the exposed-belly, ancientwarrior thing lacks any real dramatic tension. His film is a bunch of boat fights mixed with people in togas emoting slowly on soundstages. It’s a little bit of a prequel to 300, in that we see the origins of Xerxes (Rodrigo Santoro), the golden god Persian warrior who gave Gerard Butler (who appears in reused footage from 300) such a hard time in the last film. As far as storytelling goes, the Xerxes prologue is easily the

Need for Speed

Fast cars, the flashier and louder the better, have been a prime ingredient in movie excitement for more than a century now. Need for Speed, based on the Electronic Arts video game series, has little else to offer, but the visceral rush of its car chases and road-racer sequences is more than enough to keep it crackling with energy through most of its 130-minute running time. George Gatins’ jejune script sets up a might-be-deadly rivalry between star racers played by Aaron Paul and Dominic Cooper and adds a front-seat, road-trip romance between Paul’s character and a comely British car buyer (Imogen Poots).

None of it is credible enough to merit close attention, which is no doubt one more reason why director Scott Waugh keeps the automotive action hurtling along at a pellmell pace. Plus, the production designers have managed to keep the effects of CGI artifice at a minimum, which results in a real-time intensity that would have made this film a joy to see in a vintage drive-in theater like the one referenced at the outset here. I KNOW A GUY WHO MET HIM ONCE Former CN&R Arts Editor (and Arts DEVO BFFF) Mark Lore has been kicking much ass since leaving us for Portland, Ore., to pursue a career in music journalism and a life of good beers and an even better beard. Plying his prose via many taste-making outlets—the Portland Mercury, The Wire, Paste Magazine, and his own The Days of Lore music blog— Mark has been increasingly making a name for himself. A piece he wrote last year on the 20th anniversary reissue of Nirvana’s In Utero was selected for The Devil Music’s Best Rock Writing 2014 anthology, and just a few weeks ago, he got word that he not only will be covering the long overdue Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction of his favorite band of all time, KISS, but that he would also be interviewing Paul Stanley, the band’s hairy-chested singer/guitarist, about his soon-to-be-released biography, The Love Gun is loaded.

Face the Music.

Though I am definitely a fellow KISS nerd, I am a giant 12-inchheeled step removed from Mark’s level when it comes to devotion to the “Knights In Satan’s Service,” and so it seemed appropriate that instead of getting to interview the Starchild that I would interview Mark about his recent interview with one of our rock heroes: Were you in full makeup during the interview? Paul knows. Only my private parts were in full makeup. Now everybody knows.

How did he smell? I’m assuming the Starchild’s scent is not ruled by Earth’s physical laws. He smelled like roses and stars and clown white ... duh!

We’re you nervous? I was a little nervous leading up to the interview, but I was surprisingly calm during the whole thing. Maybe it was because I didn’t have any time to waste, and had to get my questions in. But he was surprisingly cool and easy to talk to.

Did you clue him in to how much of a fan boy you are? I sort of did right away. He asked me how I was doing, and I responded, “I’m talking to Paul Stanley!” And he responded, “Well, I’m talking to Mark!” And I said, “Get the fuck outta here!” OK, I made up that last sentence.

Did you learn anything during the interview that you didn’t already know about KISS? I think the most interesting thing I learned was that KISS wouldn’t be around today if it wasn’t for the reunion, which happened waaaaay back in 1996 (I was 10th row with my pal Mark Arnone).

Basically, I was trying to get him to give Ace [Frehley] and Peter [Criss] more credit for the band’s longevity than simply, “They were part of the foundation.” No, if they hadn’t done the reunion, you and Gene would not still be making billions today.

You didn’t tell him your nickname was Ace did you? No, he might have cut off the interview right there.

Did he talk about the Hall of Fame? He did. Everything Paul has said in interviews about the Hall of Fame has been pretty spot-on—that it’s a sham, that they make up rules as they go. The Grateful Dead are inducted along with every hippie hanger-on who ever played kazoo on one song, while KISS is allowed in with only the four original members. … If I had it my way, the four originals would play a few songs sans makeup, and then all of the current and past members would join them for “Rock and Roll All Nite,” and then everyone would go their separate ways. Done. We love you, good night!

Now I’m going ask the question you’ve always dreamed of being asked: What has KISS meant to you? Whew … You know, they’ve been part of my life for so long it’s hard to even explain anymore. I think that’s just it—for 36 of my 41 years on earth KISS has been a part of me. It’s kind of a trip.

Things change, you change, people come and go, and this band has been the constant, the soundtrack for all of it. My love and dedication for the band has definitely waned at certain points in my life, but the older I get the more I appreciate KISS. You mess with KISS, you mess with me.

Second, Sylvia got excited when the Realtor sketched out the possibility of buying a house.

“He had me at, ‘I think you guys qualify to buy,’” said Sylvia.

Third, the Realtor showed them a house. “One house!” said Ryan. “You’re not supposed to buy the first house you see, right?” But for Sylvia, it was love at first sight.

“I told her you can’t be sure you’ve got the right one until you’ve shopped around a little,” said Ryan. “You know what she said? ‘That’s not what you told me when you asked me to marry you.’”

To top things off, Ryan’s grandfather gifted them the money they needed for a down payment. “My grandpa is one stingy and cantankerous old dude. But when Sylvia sweet-talked him, it was like taking candy from a baby.”

Ryan shook his head slowly again. “You can’t fight a force of nature, right?”

I asked Ryan to recount that perfect storm he mentioned.

The first disturbance, he told me, was a knock upon their apartment door by a cold-calling Realtor, prospecting for renters to convert into buyers. “The dude was good,” said Ryan.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20): In Somalia, there’s a law that forbids you from putting your used chewing gum on your nose and walking around in public. Fortunately, you don’t live there, so it’s fine if you want to do that. In fact, I encourage you to go right ahead. To do so would be right in alignment with the cosmic omens. April fool! I lied. You should definitely not take yourself too seriously this week; you should look for opportunities to playfully lose your dignity and razz the status quo. But there are craftier ways to do that than by sticking gum on your nose.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20): Face Slap-

ping Tata Massage Boxing is a salon in San Francisco that provides an unusual beauty treatment: face slapping. The Thai masseuse named Tata claims to be improving your complexion as she smacks your cheeks and forehead with her hands. She also does “massage boxing,” in which she administers health-giving punches to your body with her fists. Is there a comparable service available where you live? I highly recommend it. April fool! I lied. Here’s the truth: You should be absolutely firm that you won’t tolerate whacks and wallops—including the psychological kind—even if they are supposedly good for you.

CANCER (June 21-July 22): Now would

be an excellent time to launch a new tradition or instigate a fresh trend or make a beautiful thing that will last for a thousand years. I’m talking about an amazing marvel or useful innovation or unique creation that will improve the lives of countless humans all over the planet for the next 40 generations.

April fool! I was exaggerating a bit. Producing something that will last a thousand years is too ambitious. How about if you simply launch a new tradition or instigate a fresh trend or create a beautiful thing that will last for the rest of your long life—an amazing marvel or useful innovation or unique creation that will continue to teach and amuse you all along the way?

April fool! I kind of lied.

You won’t really possess St. Brigit’s supernatural power. However, you will have an uncanny ability to make transmutations that are almost as dramatic as changing bathwater to beer.

You’re not an asshole, not even a little bit. But it is true that the coming weeks will be an excellent time to try to fix or at least modulate your least attractive qualities.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): The

planetary omens suggest that you need to experience all possible flavors of Doritos corn chips. Here’s the problem: The place where you live offers only a limited range.

That’s why I urge you to drop everything and travel to Japan, which is the world leader in Dorito variety. There you can sample coconut-curry-flavored Doritos, along with fried chicken, corn soup, smoked bacon, tuna and mayonnaise, and many others. Buy your plane ticket now! April fool! I lied. The truth is you will benefit from communing with a wide variety of sensations and experiences and ideas in many areas of your life, not just Doritos.

survey by Public Policy Polling, 4 percent of the population believes that “shape-shifting reptilian people control our world by taking on human form and gaining political power to manipulate our societies.” My own research suggests that 62 percent of those believers are Pisceans. Are you one? If so, now is a good time to intensify your fight against the shape-shifting reptilian people. April fool! I lied. Conner Wenzel is a transgender activist who’s helping organize Chico’s first-ever Trans* Week.

Wenzel, 43, who self-identifies as a “trans guy,” lived most of his life as a heterosexual woman and knows firsthand the challenge of coming out in a world where awareness of gender diversity is often limited to “he” or “she.” Organized around International Transgender Day of Visibility (March 31), Trans* Week was created to “educate, celebrate, honor and bring more awareness to trans[gender] people, and proactively include and make them welcome in our community.” The week-plus of events started with a proclamation by Mayor Scott Gruendl at City Council chambers on March 25 and runs through April 5. What’s a problem you’d like Trans* Week to address?

It will be a wonderful chance for the public, families and professionals to learn about the trans community. The more awareness you have, the better people feel about coming out, versus having fear of rejection or violence.

Well, intersexuals, who are born with parts of both male and female genitalia. In the past, doctors decided which gender the baby was, without considering their feelings. The person would be raised as that gender but might not identify with it or like it. With education, some kids are being allowed to develop to see which gender they want.

What was it like for you to come out?

What are some of the highlights of the week?

I came out as a lesbian six years ago when I was married to a man. It was just a life realization.

Neither of us did anything wrong. A year after we separated I attended a Stonewall talk by Aydin Kennedy on transgender life. That inspired me to come to Stonewall’s transgender support groups, which I eventually began leading two and a half years ago. My friends all knew I was lesbian before my family. Butte County has been lovely to me—they are my family. They’ve

Sunday, March 30, will be a Day of Celebration for the trans community [11:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m., at Chico Women’s Club], to express ourselves through spoken word, photos, art and more.

We’ll have a fun trivia night April 2 at The Maltese Bar & Tap Room. The final day, Saturday, April 5 [10:30 a.m.-noon, at Catylist], is important because we’ll have two speakers from L.A. to answer parents’ questions about gender issues.

See ya I’m moving on. Sometimes you just know when it’s time to break a new trail for yourself. I felt like that when I tried to get out of Chicago the first time, in 1982. I got as far as Palisades State Park, near Garretson, South Dakota, on a bicycle. Gravity pulled me back to Chicago for another three years, when a way to make a living in Minnesota found me.

The current situation is nothing like that, and I’m not following a dream so much as being evicted. This space on the back page of the Chico News & Review has been declared hazardous and will no longer be devoted to From the Edge, which can now be found at anthonypeytonporter.blogspot.com—please, pass the word.

I remember saying many years ago that I wanted to sell my thoughts. I didn’t know then what that meant, and yet writing this column has obviously let me do exactly that. Boy, am I ever grateful. I’ve been reading some of the old ones, and they often still make me laugh, which is as good as it gets.

When Tom Gascoyne asked me in ’05 if I’d be interested in writing a monthly column, I said no, although I

would do one biweekly, because that way I thought I might be able to build a readership. That’s what happened, and for over a year From the Edge alternated with The Culture Vulture. When The Culture Vulture was plucked, I started writing every week and have mostly kept at it since. I came to loathe that relentless deadline, although it keeps me limber and I plan to continue writing weeklyish. I’ll also keep doing commentary on KZFR. I’ve been fired several times, and this time wasn’t bad. I once announced my resignation over the company public address system, which pleased me to no end and can’t hold a candle to being able to say goodbye to you like this. The last few years have been hard for me and my family, and I deeply appreciate the compassion and generosity my readers have shown to us.

What I’ll miss most is the occasional one of you Gentle Readers politely introducing yourself and letting me know that somebody appreciates what I’m trying to do, even when I’m not sure what that is. I like that, and without my mug in the paper every blooming week I expect that’ll taper off. Anyway, thank you for your attention. Namaste.
