The right call There’s absolutely no question that there are more destitute

people in Chico the past couple of years. All one has to do is walk down Fourth Street in front of the City Council chambers. There, on the grass out front, is an encampment of sorts: many people lounging about, often sleeping among all of their belongings, including dogs in some cases.

It’s a pretty stark image, especially considering how empty this area was just a couple of years ago.

Some of these folks may be the same people who make their beds in the doorways of downtown businesses at night.

We feel for the owners and managers of these businesses. Any amount of time doing the cleanup they must undertake to simply be able to open the doors in the morning is too much time. Business people should not have to clean up human filth on their doorsteps.

But creating a sit/lie law would not solve this problem. As was noted during the last City Council meeting (see “Pull up a sidewalk,” by Robert Speer, Newslines, Aug. 22), the law would create a burden on police officers. That’s because they would end up in court each time the subject of the infraction chose to challenge it. Talk about a waste of resources. Moreover, even if the people cited should lose, the odds of them paying the fine are extremely slim.

In other words, what’s the point?

And there are other problems with the ordinance—namely the fact that prohibiting people from existing in public spaces is a violation of a fundamental civil right.

City leaders must dig deeper to get to the heart of the matter. They need to understand why these folks are living on the streets, and why here in Chico. Most important, they must determine what the community can do to help them transition out of homelessness. Ω

combined average age of 48 years old. Overdoses are killing more 30-, 40- and 50-yearold individuals than other age demographics.

With few exceptions, those who have died from a drug overdose had more than one drug in their system. Nationally, pharmaceutical-drug use now kills more people than illicit drugs.

Obviously, a problem of this magnitude will require a countywide effort—and extremely strong leadership.

The best-case scenario would be for the public, as well as Butte County’s hospitals, medical professionals, county supervisors, health services, law enforcement, city leaders, community-service organizations and Chico State University, to say that enough is enough, and that it is time to address this issue collectively.

Recently, after Chico lost five young people to alcohol use, many of the above agencies, institutions and organizations awoke from their deep, deep sleep on the issue. The silence on the drug-death epidemic over the years has been deafening.

Butte County citizens must decide if men, women and children dying from drug overdoses every 4.3 days is acceptable. If not, is Butte County willing to do the hard work needed to begin reducing this extreme rate of senseless drug-induced deaths? Ω

Champions of the civil-rights movement have been celebrating

over the last week the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington—that historic day (Aug. 28, 1963) during which Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. addressed hundreds of thousands who’d gathered at the nation’s capital in support of equality.

King’s “I Have a Dream” speech on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial— one of the most recognizable public talks in the history of the United States—still induces goosebumps.

Locally, several Chicoans recalled attending the march, and planned to mark the anniversary with a local gathering (see “A walk to remember,” by Ken Smith, Newslines, page 8).

Race relations have come a long way in the past 50 years, but the civilrights movement was set back earlier this summer when the U.S. Supreme Court, in a split decision, struck down a portion of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, a provision requiring federal oversight for changes to voting procedures in states with a history of discrimination. Now, congressional oversight is based only on current conditions that reveal an elevated risk of intentional discrimination.

Already, certain states are attempting to implement controversial alterations, such as one in Texas that would require voters to show photo identification.

Next summer, the United States will celebrate another milestone in the struggle for racial equality, the 50th anniversary of the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the law banning discrimination against minorities and women. The summer thereafter marks the 50th anniversary of the Voting Rights Act. The Supreme Court’s decision on the Voting Rights Act was predicated on the progress that’s been made over the past five decades. In our minds, that progress shows how well the law had worked with Congress having oversight. We believe the Supreme Court made the wrong decision.

Too much is at stake here. These landmark laws must be remembered, and the public must lobby Congress to ensure the continuation of voting rights. Ω

Facebook and jackassery I recently realized that Chico State’s incoming students—at least the freshmen—are young enough to have grown up in a time in which socialnetworking sites seem like they always existed. An 18-year-old in today’s world grew up with Facebook.

Back when I was in college, several of my friends tried to turn me on to Friendster—an early entrant in the social-networking realm. Today, Friendster is some sort of gaming site based out of Malaysia with games involving lots of busty anime nymphs with blue and purple hair. In addition to playing games, Friendsters can make personal profiles. A drop-down menu under the heading of “I want to” has such options as “be in an open relationship” and “go out partying” and, for the less hedonistic, “perform a good deed.”

I never signed up for Friendster. But I did open a MySpace account shortly after graduation. One of my first profile pictures was of my feet, and those of my best friend, with a backdrop of crashing waves. We’d gone on a coastal road trip and I had titled the photo “happy feet,” or something like that. A couple of days later, I got an extremely inappropriate message from a foot fetishist, a stranger, who’d seen that photo while cruising profiles.

That’s when I realized there was a dark side to social networking—the anonymity in particular emboldened people. I cannot imagine that guy would have said the same things to me in person.

Back then, the only way to make my profile private was to say that I was a 14-year-old. I did that, and so did most of my friends, until MySpace caught up with the times and developed a privacy option.

Today, like so many millions of other people, I have a Facebook account. I go back and forth on whether or not I should close it. On the one hand, it’s such an easy way to see what’s going on with people I care about. On the other hand, it’s such a major time-suck.

I’m just glad Facebook didn’t exist when I was in college or high school. I was thinking about that over the weekend, when the students were going apeshit in the south-campus neighborhood, throwing beer cans and bottles at the police.

Don’t get me wrong, I never did anything like that. In college, my friends and I—most of us journalism students—did our share of socializing over beers at barbecues or at the bars and nightclubs. Back then, not every cell phone could also take pictures. Fortunately.

But things are different today, when doing that stupid thing just once—or being in the wrong place at the wrong time—can have lasting repercussions. My advice to students is to steer clear of those gigantic parties. That’s probably the easiest way to keep from being associated with those beer-bottle-chucking jackasses who, while they are a minority of the student population, still do a bang-up job of giving Chico State a bad rep.

Re “Diploma and the debt” (Cover feature,

by Katherine Green, Aug. 22): Wonder why college tuition and studentloan debt are out of control? Here are two examples: • Within UC and CSU systems, featherbedding: Chico State President Zingg’s four administrative assistants versus one for corporate executives at his level.

• About that Proposition 30 money promised to education? All spent on pay raises for bureaucrats and a redundant new layer of bureaucrats at MediCal. When I enrolled at UC Santa Barbara in 1963, I paid $80 in “incidental fees”—tuition by another name—my first semester. My total tuition for four years at UCSB was about $900. Granted, that’s $10,000 or $15,000 today after inflation, but I paid it easily as I went. No debt after graduation.

How to fix this? Reduce the state bureaucracy by 50 percent and levy a 50 percent special additional income tax on those employees remaining, to cover college tuition and pay off student loans; fire redundant UC and CSU administrators; disband oppressor agencies like the California Air Resources Board. No more boondoggle projects like that fragile, sure-tofail rebar-and-concrete monstrosity replacing the sturdy Bay Bridge cantilever.

When I went to UC Berkeley in 1966, I paid only $210 for the entire year. In the 1970s, you could attend a California junior college for only $2 a semester. Now, with more than a trillion dollars in student-loan debt, we’re seeing another economic meltdown in the making, similar to the housingmortgage debacle.

Many students who can’t repay their student loans think about suicide, and some actually do it; some leave the country to avoid vicious debt collectors. A university education has become a “bait and switch” operation. College diplomas have become relatively worthless with the dumbing down of America, and grade inflation; most college grads can’t find jobs after graduation.

Cultural Marxism has infiltrated our universities and diluted the curriculum with useless Commie courses, to the extent that students are no longer being educated, but rather brainwashed.

There is a way out of the dilemma: social reconstructivism. When I was at UC Berkeley, we’d go on student strike, all 30,000 of us, and shut that university down to make changes. We reconstructed education.

My dad taught high school for 24 years and he always used to say, “Education is just

Re “A trio on Valley Oak” (Letters, by Stephanie Taber, Aug. 22): I wonder how many policeofficer positions could have been funded by the $150,000-plus the city of Chico spent on the special election for the failed Measure A? Was that money taken from the general fund? Oh, holier-than-thou Stephanie Taber, lest you forget your hand in the irresponsible spending of the city of Chico.

Does anyone else find it ironic, or perhaps hypocritical, that both Ms. Taber and Larry Wahl are “tea partiers” and anti-government, yet both are on the county payroll?

Dollars to donuts neither will set an example and pass on Social Security retirement benefits or Medicare benefits. Just saying.

Two views on sit/lie Re “Pull up a sidewalk” (Newslines, by Robert Speer, Aug. 22.): With the failure of the proposed sit/lie ordinance, the City Council has backed away from its responsibility to keep Chico a safe place to raise a family, an ideal location for business, and a premier place to live.

When we decide as policymakers that public-nuisance laws cost too much to enforce, we are in essence telling the Police Department not to bother. We are also sending a clear message to business owners and their customers: Antisocial behavior on sidewalks built with your tax dollars to encourage pedestrian traffic and commerce is allowed, so deal with it.

Deal with it they will. The customers will stop visiting (they have), businesses will start shutting (they have), and investment in the downtown area will move elsewhere. How do we ever hope to return our great city to economic vitality, and restore public safety and essential services, when we reward unwanted behavior and ignore the voices of commerce?

The business owners in downtown Chico need to start taking responsibility for their own business, good or bad. If business is

bad, it is because they are attracting it with their whining and complaining: “It’s the Saturday farmers’ market.” “It’s the transients.”

It’s everything except them.

I would suggest that if the farmers’ market is moved or changed, they would find little difference in their business. If anything, they would probably lose more than they gain. If the transients are cited and fined for sitting/lying on the sidewalk, their business would not improve. The transients do not stop me from entering the stores/businesses whatsoever.

I further suggest that a positive, compassionate attitude of abundance will attract far more business than one of fear and blaming.

Motivation questioned Re “Taking back the foothills” (Guest comment, by Bill Connelly, Aug. 22): It is obvious that [County Supervisor Bill] Connelly’s problem is with cannabis and those of us who enjoy it, not the pollution caused by a few bad apples.

So, Bill, you’re saying that it is illegal for farmers to use pesticides or herbicides? That’s news to me. I guess I’ve been wasting my money buying organic. I don’t think Roundup is illegal (although in my opinion it should be). When have you spoken out against all of the environmental degradation caused by everything else? The silence is deafening.

What it really comes down to is that the prohibition of marijuana is wrong. If it was legal, people would be able to grow it for themselves, in the open in the valley.

There would be no need for big gardens in the hills. But with Connelly and his cronies fighting legalization every step of the way, they are the ones responsible for the harm that a few illegal growers do to the environment.

I’m happily surprised by Mr. Connelly’s newfound concern for the environment, but cynical about his reasons. In 2007-10, I was involved with the Dry Creek Coalition in opposition of the new permitting of an illegal mining operation in Dry Creek Canyon (see “Gold Mine Goes to Court,” by Robert Speer, Sept. 3. 2009). Photos of the mine show much worse environmental damage than any of the marijuana grows I have seen.

sors, county staff, the California Mining and Geology Board, and the judge all realized that the three-man majority on the board was trying to shoehorn a huge new, illegal operation into a 25-year-old expired permit for a very small operation. This faulty decision ended up costing the county about a half-million dollars in reclamation and court costs.

Mr. Connelly might have taken his arguments about environmental concern directly from our presentations to the board at the time.

I agree with and applaud his concerns, but think this is more about marijuana than the environment.

The Butte County Interagency Narcotics Task Force (BINTF) recently conducted a couple of big drug busts in Oroville.

On Aug. 21, BINTF agents working with federal agents arrested seven people on drug charges after a 10-month investigation of alleged methamphetamine trafficking.

Search warrants led to the discovery of 10 pounds of meth, five firearms and more than $70,000.

The meth allegedly was transported here from Mexico as directed by Federico Sandoval Aguilar of Biggs. Alejandro Lopez-Corona of Biggs was also arrested, as were Oroville residents Manuel Garcia Navarro, Rafael Morfin-Medina, Rickey Lee Xiong, Sou Xiong and Cindy Lee Hunter.

Two days later, BINTF agents arrested James Wellman of Oroville on charges of manufacturing cannabis oil; and possession of explosives, meth, marijuana for sale, and narcotics without a prescription; as well as the charge of felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition. Kristian Wilson of Oroville was arrested on charges of possession of meth and drug paraphernalia.

Last week, Dan Giustina, managing general partner of Giustina Resources, a timberproducts company based in Oregon, visited Chico for a ceremony celebrating his donation—the largest scholarship gift in the university’s history.

He made the donation in honor of his friend Tom Bell, a late local rancher who died in 1987. Beginning next year, the Bell Family Presidential Scholarship Endowment will provide two students in the university’s College of Agriculture with $5,000. In subsequent years, up to four new students each will receive the annual scholarship.

In tragic news on Tuesday afternoon (Aug. 27), Chico State student Pa Houa Lor, an 18-year-old sophomore, was struck by a large oak-tree limb while sitting on a bench near Butte Hall. Lor, of Chico, succumbed to her injuries at Enloe Medical Center.

HINDU INVOCATION

On Sept. 17, the Chico City Council meeting will feature an invocation by Rajan Zed (pictured), president of the Universal Society of Hinduism. He will deliver the prayer in Sanskrit and then read an English transition for those who don’t speak the ancient language.

This comes as the Butte County Coalition of Reason pressures the city to end the pre-meeting invocations, citing a constitutional conflict over separation of church and state.

In 2002, a state appellate court ruled that prayers before governmental bodies may be delivered as long as they don’t recognize a particular religion, which means mentioning Jesus is not allowed because of his association with Christianity. God, on the other hand, is considered a generic entity common to many religions, so the word may be used in a pre-meeting prayer.

Chico is one of 14 of city and county governments statewide that Zed has visited or is planning to visit.

Marvin was among an estimated 300,000 people who marched on the National Mall that day in what remains one of the most significant political rallies in U.S. history. The march is where Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his momentous “I Have a Dream” speech from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, and a landmark event that helped lead to the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

Locally, Marvin and two other Chico women who attended the original 1963 event—Diana Fogel and Wendy Brown—planned to lead a march Aug. 28 from the Dorothy Johnson Center on 16th Street in the Chapmantown neighborhood to the statue of King in Community Park on 20th Street.

Fogel, who was 20 in 1963,

recalled living in Boston at the time, where a group organized buses to transport participants to the capital. Prior to the march, she said she had enthusiastically supported President John F. Kennedy, and was sympathetic to the civil-rights movement. She and a friend arrived to find the buses full, but numerous families offering space in their cars.

The pair had to separate, and she took a ride with two African-American men, one of whom also brought his young son.

Brown was in her early 20s and on a break from college before attending graduate school at Harvard University.

Already a budding civil-rights activist, she was visiting friends in Harlem who volunteered with Operation Crossroads Africa (OCA), a nonprofit organization dedicated to building relations between North America and Africa formed in 1958. OCA also organized bus rides to Washington, and Brown jumped on.

Like Marvin, neither Fogel nor

Brown anticipated the size of the event.

As they individually shared their memories from a half-century ago, their strongest recollections were of the sheer mass of people, and of an overwhelming feeling of unity.

“Like any big event, there was just so much going on that it was hard to get a full sense of it all,” said Brown, who stood near one of the pillars of the Lincoln Memorial as King spoke. “But the most moving, amazing memory I have is of that huge sea of people. There was this wonderful feeling to the march and to the whole day. It was a good, pure, positive kind of crowd energy that maybe isn’t so common today.”

Fogel offered her memories of King’s turn at the podium.

“When he started speaking, I was listening, because I knew he was kind of famous and that he was on the side I felt for,” Fogel said, laughing as she recalled a time when King wasn’t a household name.

“But somewhere during the speech I realized, ‘Wow, this guy is really saying it!’

“He was really laying out the big picture. I was attentive when he’d started, but as he kept speaking I was glued to every word.”

The women also recalled the courage and pride of the marchers that day—an estimated 80 percent of whom were black—and noted some traveled long distances through hostile territory to participate.

“A lot of people had a very hard time

getting there,” Brown explained. “They couldn’t stay in motel rooms along the way, and sometimes couldn’t even stop for a cup of coffee or gas without putting themselves in danger.”

Just as the March on Washington

was a landmark moment in the civilrights movement, all three women regard it as a pivotal personal moment, with lasting effects on their lives. Each committed deeply to civil-rights causes after the march, and all three remain politically active today, devoting their efforts to social, economic and environmental justice to varying degrees.

Brown spent the following summer in Birmingham, Ala., teaching third-graders as part of a joint program between Harvard and Alabama’s Miles College. She lived on the college’s all-black campus and—even as a white woman—felt the force of Southern prejudice during the tumultuous times.

“Nobody could really object to us being there to teach third-graders to read, but we were treated horribly when we’d go out in an integrated group, like socially or even just to do our laundry together,” she said. “It was the only time in my life when I remember having to even be afraid of the police officers.”

Fogel ended up in Mississippi a few years after the march, taking depositions from blacks who’d been denied the right to vote—a job that local court reporters refused to do.

“The things I heard have always stuck with me, like how the workers at the registrar of voters would turn the closed sign around as [African-American] people walked up to the door to register,” she recalled. “In one case, a young man was dragged behind a truck and killed.”

Marvin went on to join the Volunteers in Service in America (VISTA), a national service program started by Kennedy dedicated to fighting poverty. She worked with poor black students—the children of sharecroppers, she noted—in southwestern Virginia. She is currently involved with the Sierra Club and the Butte Environmental Council.

All three women also agreed that there’s still a long way to go in fighting inequality, citing recent events like the Trayvon Martin shooting and verdict; racial profiling; and the recent Supreme Court ruling striking down part of the Voting Rights Act. “There’s still so much institutionalized racism,” Marvin said. “Aside from any laws about how people should be treated, there are practices that keep minority groups of all kinds down in many areas— economic, legal, social, housing, employment, education. There’s racism that spills into all of these institutions.

“We’ve made a lot of progress and some people have benefited greatly, but we still have a long way to go.” Ω

Struggle for equality Pride Weekend celebrates progress, but participants’ work not done addressing the colorfully dressed crowd gathered for Stonewall Iday,nAlliance’s Pride Weekend celebration at Chico City Plaza on SaturAug. 24, Scott Gruendl—self-described as Chico’s “first, second, and only openly gay mayor”—wore his heart on his sleeve.

“It gives me great pride to be a top elected official in the city of Chico, to be recognized as a gay man legally married to another gay man, and that the law recognizes it doesn’t matter who I love,” Gruendl said, inviting his husband, Nicholas Goody, on stage for an embrace. “As long as I love him, that is what’s important.”

In his speech, made close to noon during the main event of Stonewall’s three-day Pride celebration, Gruendl pointed to the significant progress made on LGBTQ issues in the past year. He made particular note of the U.S. Supreme Court striking down a key portion of the Defense of Marriage Act—the law barring the federal government from recognizing same-sex marriages legalized by state governments—and upholding a lower court’s undoing of California’s ban of same-sex marriage via Proposition 8.

In an interview prior to his address, Gruendl explained his personal connection to California’s same-sex marriage ban—he and Goody were one of thousands of gay couples in California who rushed to tie the knot in the four-month window prior to Prop. 8 being passed in 2008.

Despite the progress, Gruendl, along with fellow speaker and Councilwoman Tami Ritter, emphasized that there is still much to be done on the equality front.

“Until every person experiences the freedom to be their authentic self … until every person has the freedom to love whomever and however they choose, our activism is not done,” Ritter passionately told the audience.

“The equality struggle continues,” Gruendl said, proceeding to reel off a series of national figures: Less than a quarter of states issue same-sex marriage licenses; only a quarter of states fully define hate crimes or bullying as relating to sexual identity; less than a third of states allow hospital visits from same-sex partners; and less than half of states allow same-sex adoption.

Likewise, Aydin Kennedy, a local transgender man, activist and coordinator of Stonewall’s community counseling program, praised recent state legislation during an interview, but made it clear that there’s plenty of work ahead for the transgender community.

and use facilities—including restrooms—based on their chosen gender identity rather than sex assigned at birth, will go into effect Jan. 1.

Still, Kennedy said, progress on transgender issues is “10 or 20 years behind” the rest of the LGBTQ movement because “the idea of gender identity not being fixed is a very new concept for a lot of people.”

Kennedy identified particularly pressing concerns for the transgender community: Safe access to hormones and surgeries for making gender transitions; being able to more easily change identification and legal documentation; and reducing the alarming rate of violence against transgender individuals.

Despite the broad range of challenges facing the LGBTQ

community, Pride Weekend in Chico—now in its 25th year—has come a long way in recent years in terms of community support and public visibility. Gruendl recalled several years when the celebration amounted to little more than a backyard barbecue.

Jacke Humphrey-Straub—a Chico State graduate and current program manager of Sacramento’s Gender Health Center—remembers that when she joined the Stonewall Alliance Board of Directors in 2010, the event was comparatively small and secluded, making for “a very different vibe” from this year’s Pride celebration, she said.

“The whole point of Pride is to be visible, to say, ‘We’re here, we’re not going anywhere,’” Humphrey-Straub said. “It’s very significant to be in the center of the city, in the open. Whether everyone likes it or not, we’re here.”

Kennedy, who has participated in Pride Weekend’s various manifestations since 1995, agreed that holding the event in the heart of Chico has served to “increase the feeling of pride. In a relatively small city, people can sometimes feel like they have to go somewhere else to be a part of an [LGBTQ] community,” he said. Events like Pride, Kennedy added, which welcome general community participation, make such individuals “feel like they Opinions on Obamacare belong.”

police Friday night (Aug. 23) and the potential debauchery associated with the annual Labor Day tube float on the Sacramento River, the city of Chico’s Town and Gown Committee meeting on Monday (Aug. 26) had a bit of an edge to it.

The committee, which is made up of representatives from the city, Chico State and Butte College, has already discussed the annual flotilla a couple of times this summer.

The matter was suddenly intensified in the wake of the party on Sixth and Ivy streets—a gathering police responded to at the request of the person hosting it to clear the yard of unwanted party-goers. At least one police officer and an Enterprise-Record reporter, Almendra Carpizo, who was participating in a police ride-along during the students’ first weekend back in town, were struck with beer cans thrown by revelers.

According to a Police Department press release, officers and police volunteers then left the party, and re-approached wearing helmets, at which time they were greeted with more launched cans and bottles.

A fight that broke out on Ivy Street resulted in at least one person being pushed to the ground and beaten. The crowd was ushered away from the prone victim by officers who were preparing to declare the gathering an unlawful assembly. Within about 10 minutes, the crowd disbanded, police say. A majority of the partiers were reportedly cooperative.

“There was a small number of people, who utilized the anonymity of the crowd in order to attack the officers and volunteers with bottles and cans,” the press release said.

ment’s “One and Done” policy: “Should one act of violence, one fight or one bottle, can or rock be thrown, at a party, the Disorderly Events ordinance will be enacted to shut the party down.”

And with that background,

the Town and Gown Committee looked toward Labor Day. Last year, an estimated 12,000 people took part in the event that was marred by the death of a college student from Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo.

Two years ago, Butte County’s Board of Supervisors approved a local ordinance to enforce an alcohol prohibition following the passage of a state law allowing for such a ban during summer holidays on the stretch of the river where the flotilla takes place. But Glenn County, which also borders the river, failed to follow suit, making those bans unenforceable. Glenn County’s supervisors changed their minds this year, so the ban will be in place.

Chico Police Capt. Lori MacPhail said the upcoming weekend “will be interesting,” and that the prior weekend was a surprise.

“It was a little bit unexpected what went on this weekend,” she said. “It was pretty explosive out there.”

Because of the alcohol ban on Labor Day, McPhail said there’s not been much out-of-town advertising for the event to bring in outsiders; nor has there been much chatter on social-networking websites, which police have been monitoring to try to get a handle on what to expect. She pointed out that, because of budget cuts, there

will be no mounted police to patrol the downtown over the weekend as there has been in the past.

“Labor Day has become the most significant special event we have to plan for,” McPhail said.

Taylor Herren, president of Chico State’s Associated Students and a Town and Gown Committee member, said her group has been promoting word of the alcohol ban in hopes of keeping the crowds down.

“We need to discourage those who don’t live here anymore, and keep Labor Day a local event,” she said.

There are a number of campus events planned for the weekend, Herren said, including the Wildcat Challenge on Saturday (Aug. 31) in the university housing area, and the Wildcat Recreation Center will be open all day Monday (Sept. 2), even though it’s a holiday.

“How do we start redefining what Labor Day means?” she asked. “We need to craft more events catered to students, and figure out what the steps are for next year.”

Chico State President Paul Zingg said resources to control such events are limited for the parties involved—Chico State, the city of Chico, Butte College and Butte County.

“We know there are times of the year that are more problematic,” he said. “The beginning of semesters, Labor Day, Halloween—they’ve taken on lives of their own. We need to work together at these times of the year and try to get more bang for the buck.”

The Delta supports 57 different species of wildlife, he said, including some that are either listed or threatened to be listed under the federal Endangered Species Act. “The crop value coming out of the Delta is over $700 million a year,� he said. “We believe that needs to be preserved—and enhanced, if possible.�

Existing water rights for those in the North State will not be affected, Meral assured. “We’ve gone out of our way to design this project in a way that will not impact upstream water rights, groundwater, or reservoir operations.�

Sponsored by the Butte County Department of Water and Resource Conservation and the Glenn County Water Advisory Committee, the forum attracted close to 200 people to the midweek, midday meeting.

The speakers were Jerry Meral, who was appointed by Brown as the deputy secretary to the California Natural Resources Agency and serves as a spokesman for the $25 billion project—a plan whose two-pronged approach calls for restoring the Delta’s ecosystem while increasing the water flow north to south.

He was followed Rep. John Garamendi, whose 3rd Congressional District includes 200 miles of the Sacramento River, from Benicia to Hamilton City. The river is a centerpiece in the BDCP, which Garamendi is very much against. Next came Aza Azhderian, a waterpolicy administrator for the San Luis & DeltaMendota Water Authority, which will benefit greatly from the tunnel plan. The final speaker was Jonas Minton, water-policy advisor for Planning and Conservation League, a state lobbying organization.

The speakers were introduced by Paul Gosselin, Butte County’s Water and Resource Conservation director, who in his opening remarks made it clear that he questions the plan. “Butte County and the entire northern Sacramento Valley region is part of the Delta watershed, and the area of origin for much of that water that flows through the Delta,� he said. “We are interconnected, but we can’t accept well-intentioned efforts that will cause devastating consequences to our region, like the current concept of the BDCP.�

However, Garamendi questioned

the project’s overall need, and warned it could be environmentally devastating. The tunnels, he said, have the capacity to transfer 15,000 cubic feet of water per second from the Sacramento River, though the plan as is limits that to 9,000 cubic feet per second. “The [flow of the] Sacramento River, on average, is somewhere between 12,000 and 19,000 cubic feet per second,� Garamendi said. “This project has the capacity to suck the Delta dry.�

He called it “the most destructive environmental project ever conceived on the West Coast and perhaps in this entire nation.�

Azhderian—whose water district includes the San Joaquin Valley, which is set to receive much of the transported water—defended the project, and said it was needed to protect the farmlands and wildlife in that region.

Providing health insurance to thousands of uninsured field workers to meet Affordable Care Act requirements will be a challenge for California’s agricultural industry.

According to estimates from the insurance industry, minimum health coverage under the ACA would cost the agriculture industry $1 per employee for every hour of work in the field, according to The New York Times.

Farm-labor contractors typically operate with a 2 percent profit margin, leaving little room to accommodate the added cost of providing health-care coverage. The expense likely will be passed on to growers and, subsequently, consumers.

Further, field workers will also have difficulty setting aside enough of their wages to cover health-care expenses; the minimum health plan under the ACA would cost farm workers about $250 a month.

City attorneys from San Francisco and Sacramento are seeking compensation for costs related to a Nevada psychiatric hospital’s practice of busing mental patients to California.

In February, a confused and suicidal patient’s arrival in Sacramento prompted an investigation that revealed Rawson-Neal Psychiatric Hospital in Las Vegas had sent about 1,500 psychiatric patients out of state since 2008, and roughly a third of those to California, according to The Sacramento Bee. In an Aug. 20 letter to Nevada Attorney General Catherine Cortez Masto, San Francisco City Attorney Dennis Herrera said he is seeking at least $500,000 in reimbursement for housing and care of a number of discharged RawsonNeal patients, according to the Reno GazetteJournal. Twenty patients required emergency medical care shortly after they arrived in San Francisco.

Both Herrera and Sacramento City Attorney James Sanchez said they will pursue legal action if Nevada does not reimburse their respective cities.

FEMALE INMATES STERILIZED

A review of unauthorized sterilizations of female state-prison inmates has been approved and fast-tracked by California’s Joint Legislative Audit Committee.

Between 2006 and 2010, at least 148 women incarcerated in California’s state-prison system were sterilized without the required approval, while another 100 were likely illegally sterilized dating back to the late 1990s, according to the Center for Investigative Reporting. On Aug. 22, members of the audit committee asked the State Auditor’s office to make the review its highest priority.

State Auditor Elaine Howle said her office will analyze each sterilization case from the past eight years and determine the inmates’ economic status, ethnicity, race, and number of prison terms, pregnancies and births. The audit will also determine whether consent was provided and how that consent was obtained.

California banned forced sterilizations in 1979.

for routine body maintenance? Mark Tenenbaum hopes so. He recently opened Tenenbaum Chiropractic in Chico, intentionally setting a low price per office visit to encourage people to seek his services.

“The philosophy is that, if your body is a car, you take your car to get an oil change or a tuneup,” Tenenbaum said in a phone interview. “Coming to me is kind of like the same thing. If they can come in at least once a month to get a tuneup, it’s really healthy for their body—and most people can afford $20 once a month to do that.”

Tenenbaum opened his office doors June 3. The high volume of patients he’s treated in his first three months has been a pleasant surprise.

Some like his non-traditional hours: 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Monday through Friday, and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday. Others like the ability to schedule appointments online at their convenience.

Then there’s the price—$20 gets a patient at least 15 minutes with Tenenbaum. He’ll treat children under 5 years old for free and kids ages 6 to 17 for $5 when their parents come to see him.

“I didn’t want to set up a practice where I was turning people away,” he said. “In all fairness to people out there, the economy is tough—a lot of people don’t have money.

In the 11 weeks I’ve been open here, I’ve had a lot of people come in who say there’s no way they could afford probably 90 per-

He was born and raised in Merced. He received his undergraduate degree from the University of Colorado in Boulder, majoring in psychology with a minor in business. He worked in the mental-health field for six years in San Diego, where he had a career epiphany.

“I saw an excessive amount of the population put on pharmaceutical drugs—both kids and adults,” Tenenbaum said. “When I was working in various mental-health settings, what I found was most of these people did not need to be on prescription drugs—they just needed to make lifestyle changes, make healthy choices.

“They needed to eat right, they needed

to exercise more, they needed to sleep more—and they needed to improve their relationships with friends and family. That was the crux, the main issue many people had. And they didn’t need to be on prescription drugs.

“I really wanted to get out of that setting. … I wanted to continue to work with people, but in a setting where I could encourage people to live a holistic lifestyle.”

A few years earlier, he’d had a transformational experience with a chiropractor.

He was 24 at time and had suffered pain off and on for a decade following a wrestling mishap, in which a friend had put him in a headlock and crushed his head down, injuring his neck.

Walking downtown in his hometown, he saw a sign in front of a chiropractor’s office that said, “We treat neck pain.” He went inside and learned his second cervi-

He also performs orthopedic massage (focusing on muscles) and craniosacral massage (a soft touch often used on the head and pelvis).

“Craniosacral is a very subtle technique,” Tenenbaum explained.

“It’s very relaxing; some patients actually fall asleep on the table. …

It’s hard to explain—you have to experience it.”

He doesn’t just touch people’s bodies, though; he also tries to touch their minds.

In Chico, Tenenbaum has treated patients as young as 1 and as old as 89.

“I can pretty much do it to anyone with a spine,” he said, adding that “you don’t have to be in pain to benefit from chiropractic.

“A lot of people go to the chiropractor just when they’re in pain, and it really should be the other way around,” Tenenbaum said. “A lot of my patients come in for maintenance care, where there’s not necessarily anything wrong with them—they’re just coming in to get their oil changed, so to speak, just because they know their body is going to function better and they’re going to feel better.

“So I encourage everyone, even if they don’t have any problems, to come in and get a treatment. Most people are surprised at how much better they feel.” Ω

EARTH WATCH PLANS VEX PACIFIC NORTHWEST

Energy-industry plans to move larger and larger amounts of coal and oil through the ecologically conscious Pacific Northwest by train for shipment to fuel-hungry Asian markets are causing the region an identity crisis of sorts.

Beginning in September of last year, the first trains carrying crude oil from North Dakota drove through the Spokane area, and mile-long trains carrying coal from Wyoming now travel through the area on a daily basis, according to a recent article in The New York Times.

To make matters worse, coal loads shipped by train through what’s known as the Spokane Funnel could more than double if proposed regional export terminals are approved.

Among the issues that rankle the area’s environmentalists, including the Sierra Club, is the routine spilling of large amounts of coal and coal dust from trains into waterways.

FUKUSHIMA STORAGE TANK SPRINGS LEAK

A storage tank at Japan’s damaged Fukushima nuclear plant has sprung a leak, resulting in the loss of 80,000 gallons of highly radioactive water.

The leak is the worst yet from the hundreds of rubber-seamed steel storage tanks holding contaminated water collected in the aftermath of the March 2011 tsunami that crippled the plant, according to The New York Times.

Tokyo Electric Power Co.—or Tepco—said that the leaking water, which has a radiation level equal to the maximum cumulative exposure allowed for plant workers over five years’ time, poses no immediate threat to the ocean.

Others disagree.

“We are extremely concerned,” said Hideka Morimoto, a spokesman for Japanese nuclearwatchdog group the Nuclear Regulation Authority, adding that the leaking water could reach the sea via a drain gutter.

‘PIGEON APOCALYPSE’

The environmental prosecutor’s office in Moscow has begun an investigation into what is being termed by some as a “pigeon apocalypse.”

Many of the Russian capital’s pigeons have been dropping from the sky and behaving like “zombies” before dying, according to a recent story in the UK’s Guardian newspaper. Some of the pigeons have reportedly acted “as if drugged, stumbling and reacting slowly to humans, or else flying into the faces of passersby and falling to the ground.”

The suspected cause of the mass pigeon deaths is Newcastle disease, an avian disease that can be transmitted to humans.

“Before death, they start to resemble zombies: They lose their orientation and fly without a sense of direction, then fall, already lacking the strength to get up,” said Konstantin Ranks, a Russian science columnist quoted in the article.

“That was my New Year’s resolution this year—to slowly but surely transfer everything over from synthetic stuff,” Plummer said. “It’s nice to know that I’m not putting toxins in anything.”

Plummer recently began making her own deodorant for her family, and using essential oils to treat all manner of illnesses.

She also makes her own sunscreen.

“I have always tried to do things as naturally as I could,” she said, “but we used [conventional] sunscreen growing up, and I didn’t think anything of it.

“Last year, [my family] used regular sunscreen; I knew it wasn’t good for [my son], but I didn’t know what else to use.”

Conventional sunscreens often contain such potentially health-damaging chemicals as oxybenzone and various parabens, as well as retinyl palmitate, which research suggests increases the growth of skin tumors on sun-exposed skin.

When Plummer discovered essential oils and their various homeopathic uses, she was thrilled. Not only had she found natural remedies for common ailments, but she also discovered an online support group in connection with Utah-based essential-oils producer Young Living Essential Oils, from which she could garner new information and share recipes (and for whom she now works as an independent distributor).

“Through them,” said Plummer, “[I found out that] carrot-seed oil has a natural SPF [sun-protection factor] of 38 to 40, and I thought, ‘Why can’t I just make my own [sunscreen]?’” (A 2009 study published in Pharmacognosy Magazine confirms that sun-protection products containing carrot-seed oil have a natural SPF of 38-40.)

She’s been making her own sunscreen for about a year now, and believes that it has protected her family from the sun as effectively as the conventional kind.

Plummer’s recipe uses “coconut oil, and shea butter—and carrot-seed oil—and I put lavender [oil] in, because lavender’s great for sun protection.

“We don’t use a lot of sunscreen anymore [of any kind],” she noted, “because I’ve also read that we protect ourselves a little bit too much from the sun, and we’re not getting all the vitamins we need. But if we’re going to be in the water all day, I don’t want [my son] to get burned.”

The recipe Plummer uses is not the

only option around; many recipes for natural sunscreen are available. “There are tons of different recipes you can use—I’ve found a lot of recipes on www.wellnessmama.com,” she said. “I know a lot of people use the zinc-oxide powder [a powdered mineral that absorbs UVA and UVB rays] that you can buy. I don’t need to use it because of the carrot-seed essential oil.

“I like using essential oils versus zinc oxide [because], in addition to protecting our skin, they have healing properties … so I figure we’re getting the double benefit,” Plummer said.

She says to be wary of essential oils that have a label saying “Do not ingest,” as these have probably had synthetic ingredi-

2. When the beeswax is melted, remove the mixture from the heat and let cool to room temperature. If there are some lumps, that is OK. 3. Move the mixture to the fridge for 15-30 minutes. You want it to set up, but still be soft enough to whip.

4. Take the mixture out of the fridge, and using a stand or hand mixer, start to whip it. Drop in the carrot-seed essential oil and keep mixing until light and fluffy.

Use as you would any regular sunscreen.

Application rates will depend on your activity and exposure to water. Store in a glass container in the refrigerator between uses.

ents added. “Even if you inhale something, you digest it,” said Plummer, “so you really don’t want anything near you that you don’t want in your bloodstream.”

However, John Campbell, wellness manager at the Chico Natural Foods Cooperative, says that essential oils labeled “Do not ingest” are usually labeled this way to avoid being labeled as supplements. These essential oils are not food or pharmaceutical grade, but that does not necessarily mean that there has been anything added or taken away, or that they are unsafe in any way, he said.

“The only thing you don’t want to put [in your sunscreen] is anything with citrus oils,” Plummer said, “because citrus oils are photosensitive—they react to sun exposure—and they will discolor your skin. They won’t really hurt you, but you’ll have a weird, brown, patchy, strange tan.”

Valley Dermatology Center says that the concern with mainstream sunscreens revolves around whether they contain nanoparticles of any of their ingredients—particles that have been reduced to a size at which they can actually pass through cell walls to target specific cells. Some people are concerned that these ultra-fine particles may be unsafe (some have suggested they can cause cancer); Hodari said these concerns have not been conclusively proven to be valid.

He recommended using a zincor titanium-based sunscreen, “with the fewest ingredients possible.”

While Hodari said that he had no particular knowledge about carrot-seed oil having a naturally high SPF, he did say that he didn’t believe it would be harmful.

While Plummer expressed concern about Vitamin D deficiency due to lack of sun exposure, Hodari said that people actually don’t need to be in the sun all the time to get Vitamin D. “There are many issues related to Vitamin D deficiency—including fatigue, joint pain, and possible hair loss, but you need only about 20 to 30 minutes per week of UV light to convert Vitamin D,” he said. POSTCARD LOVE On Aug. 8, I wrote at length in this column in encouragement of sending postcards, especially homemade ones that make use of recycled materials. I challenged readers to make creative recycled-material postcards and send them to me. I received quite a few in response— some of them very touching, like the one I wrote about in last week’s GreenHouse, made from wood and sent to me by Oroville resident Diane Beers.

This week I offer three other wonderful examples of the cards I received. First off is one sent to me by local “splatter-dash” painter Frankie Brown who, as it turns out, was featured in a CN&R story by Arts Editor Jason Cassidy called “A messy picture” (CN&R, Nov. 11, 2006).

Brown’s colorful postcard is basically a miniature painting that includes bits of gold foil amid the bright splatters of paint adorning it—sort of Jackson Pollock meets GusFrankie Brown’s splatter-dash postcard. tav Klimt (minus an image of a beautiful woman).

“Hope you like this card,” Brown wrote. “I’ve been doing splatter-dash art since 1979. If Jackson Pollock was still alive, he’d probably be saying similar.”

Next, I present an inspirational one from a woman who signed her name as simply Alexandra, featuring a dancing woman, a cute dog and a skunk writing a letter, as well as the words “Dancing into A fabulous postcard creation by Alexandra.

Nirvana” and “Write outside the margins.”

“Thought I’d send along my postcard ‘creation’ per your invitation,” Alexandra wrote. “The card stock is from a box of catfood pouches, the paper backing is the unused side of some junk mail we received.”

And finally, here is Richard Beers’ postcard made from what looks to be a decades-old photograph of a man (Beers?) seemingly holding up Italy’s Leaning Tower of Pisa.

“Before the advent of digital photography,” he wrote, “I used to develop photos while traveling and send them to friends and family … as postcards.

“I once sent a one-foot-by-two-foot paper bath mat, with a cartoon and hotel ID emblazoned across it, across several states as a giant postcard. I wrote my message on the back, and was surprised and Richard Beers’ funny card that gratified that a ‘postcard’ that in no way looks like it might be a photo from the 1970s. met federal size restrictions was tolerated and delivered!

“Sadly, postcard/letter writing is an underappreciated art.”

I agree with Beers, and am glad that there are folks in this world who do appreciate the art of the postcard. Thank you.

What was your first ride?

It was a Schwinn Stingray, with a banana seat – the coolest bike in the world. I raced it all over Parkview School and the park! Later I biked to Chico Jr High, and even delivered newspapers on my bike.

And today?

My current commute is short – only a couple of miles, a couple days a week. Nothing like when I bike-commuted to Orland twice a week!

What’s the best thing about your bike(s)?

I think the best thing is that I’m still logging miles after 50 years of biking. It’s an integral part of my life, requires no thought.

What would you most like car drivers to know?

I really just want to thank the vast majority of drivers who are thoughtful and bike-aware. And for those who never have, I want to suggest you try riding a bike!

Why DO you ride?

Biking keeps me in touch with our humanity – on a bike I interact with others so much more than in a car. It feels good and it’s good for us!

hat makes an “extreme” athlete? Definitions vary, but one could argue that either of two requirements needs to be met: Disregarding good sense in the name of thrillseeking (for example, strapping on a fabric wingsuit and jumping out of a hot-air balloon) or intensely pushing oneself to physical and mental limits (riding a mountain bike over a 250-mile course through the Himalayas).

In this special issue, the CN&R profiles four local athletes who have pursued lofty heights, excessive speeds, overwhelming challenges and, more than anything, exhilarating new experiences in Butte County and beyond.

JASON CHILDS Skydiver finds his calling with wingsuiting, eyes even loftier heights Most people would jump out of a plane only in an emergency.

But for Jason Childs, skydiving has become a hobby, a passion and his sport of choice.

The 33-year-old said he came to a turning point after he had completed about 350 jumps.

That’s when he first slipped into a wingsuit—a specialized jumpsuit with fabric between the legs and under the arms for increased surface area—and experienced what it’s like to fly like a bird.

“It truly is flying—you are your wing, and you can go wherever you want. You can go for miles,” Childs said. “The moment I jumped out of the plane in that wingsuit, I knew that’s what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. It was life-changing.”

Wingsuiting is considered extremely dangerous, a sport reserved for adrenaline junkies and people with a death wish. Childs

doesn’t deny the danger, and he’s heard every argument against skydiving.

So, does he feel safe?

“Statistically, skydiving is safer than driving, but people feel [driving] is more socially acceptable and that you’re not in harm’s way while driving,” Childs said.

“We’re just like everyone else; we just skydive. That’s our chosen rush. Some people ride motorcycles at 150 mph, race cars, or play water polo—I consider that dangerous because I can’t swim that long. But skydiving is just strong to me.

“The gear we have is top-notch, and we do intensive gear checks before every jump.

We try to be safe as possible. But, accidents do happen.”

Like his jump No. 42, for example.

After Childs exited the plane, all went well until it was time to deploy his main parachute. When he did, his reserve chute

deployed along with it, an extremely rare and dangerous occurrence.

“The danger in both parachutes deploying is that the lines can become entangled and neither parachute inflates properly,” Childs explained. “Then gravity takes over.”

Fortunately, the lines remained separate, and Childs calmly and gingerly navigated his way back to terra firma.

“I landed uneventfully, picked up my stuff, walked [away], and took the rest of the day off,” he said.

Childs completed his first skydive four years ago, and he’s since completed more than 700 jumps, including 500 “relative work” jumps (belly formation with a parachute, currently the most popular skydiving discipline), 150 wingsuit jumps and 10 jumps out of hot-air balloons.

His longest freefall distance is 15,171 feet (nearly three miles), and he’s reached speeds of 190 mph, according to his digital altimeter. The highest altitude he’s jumped from is 18,500 feet, but he hopes to eclipse that personal record once he completes his high-altitude training. When he does, he’ll be able to

exit anywhere from 35,000 feet to 38,000 feet.

His passion has become a family affair.

He and his wife, Jenn (who’s closing in on 300 jumps), regularly bring their two children (7-year-old Averi and 5-year-old Jett) to the drop zone. Childs sees it as an opportunity to provide his kids with a well-rounded idea of the sport—including the accidents.

“They’ve been around malfunctions.

They’ve been around serious injury. They’ve actually seen someone hit the ground under spinning reserve [when a chute does not fully inflate, causing the skydiver to spin out of control],” Childs said. “I was nervous at that point. But kids are resilient. You teach them what happened, what went wrong, and they get it.”

Both Averi and Jett have flown in a wind tunnel (used for training purposes) with their parents, but only Averi has asked to jump.

In addition to the adrenaline rush, Childs said he returns to the sport because of the people. He’s shared air time with millionaire inventors, a man traveling the country in his RV, a judge, and a military veteran of three wars who had jumped from planes in the 1960s, among others.

“The people are genuine,” Childs said.

“When you start skydiving, it’s about the jump. Then you soon realize you keep going back because of the people.”

ARIANA ALTIER Champion mountain-bike racer started out in Upper Bidwell Park “There’s just something about riding a bike really fast down a hill,” Ariana Altier said of her love for downhill mountain-bike racing. Last year, as one of three women on Chico State’s mountain-biking team, the 20year-old sustainable-manufacturing major was a Division II national champion.

In fact, Altier loves mountain biking so much that she’s balking at the prospect of becoming a professional racer once her college career is over in a couple of years. Quite simply, the Chico State junior doesn’t like the idea of turning her passion into a job.

“I’ve definitely had some sponsor offers, and that’d be cool,” she said during a recent interview. “But at the same time, I don’t want to take the fun out of something that I really enjoy.

“I just want to pursue [racing] for a few years and see where I can go with it. I’m not really looking to get sponsored and become a highly paid athlete.”

She still fully intends to compete at her highest level. This summer—her first on the professional circuit—has been a success; with two more races to go, she is currently

ranked second in the women’s professional bracket of the California Enduro Series.

The increasingly popular enduro discipline is similar to what casual riders do with their friends—in between timed downhill sections, racers take as much time as they want riding back up the mountain. Though it’s not her first choice, she believes enduro is where she will excel, expressing doubt that she “has what it takes” to hit the 60-foot gaps on professional downhill race courses. She feels that, without any mechanical issues, she’ll be able to maintain her ranking in the California Enduro Series, and maybe even put pressure on the first-place racer.

Altier began riding bikes at an early age.

In elementary school, she logged about 10 miles a day commuting from her former

home near Upper Bidwell Park. She estimates that she was 10 years old the first time she rode the Chico Wildflower Century; as she got older, she started cycling in timed uphill trials.

But she didn’t take interest in mountain bikes until she was 15, when she found a discarded “Walmart bike” in the bushes at Lindo Channel and started “tinkering around on the trails in Upper Park.”

“With mountain biking, there’s this freedom of hopping on your bike, riding for miles, seeing the back country, and having fun doing it,” she said. “That’s really what got me into mountain biking—exploring Upper Park.

“There’s also the adrenaline rush that comes with downhill mountain biking,” she added. “I wouldn’t say that I’m an adrenaline junkie, but that’s definitely a huge part of it.”

In her junior year at Chico High School, she bought a hard-tail mountain bike with front suspension, and began riding with a friend and fellow cyclist, Zora Thomas, who now rides for the mountain-bike team at UC Santa Cruz. The two helped motivate each other on the trails, and in Altier’s senior year of high school, they both bought full-suspension bikes and began riding four times a week.

When time came to start considering her

college options, Altier was looking specifically at schools with women’s mountain-biking teams. She eventually chose to attend Chico State, where she got her first taste of organized mountain-bike racing.

Altier began competing in the lowest racing category her freshman year, but progressed throughout the season. In her last race that year, against the best competition available, she took first place. She subsequently made a habit of winning, going undefeated during her sophomore year. Her season culminated in the national championship race in New Mexico; her time was 17 seconds better than the second-place finisher.

Though she acknowledged she wants to defend her title this season, she modestly changed the subject to turning more young women on to mountain biking. This year, barring unexpected recruits, Chico State’s women’s team is down to two members.

“It’s a masculine sport,” she said. “The atmosphere at a mountain-bike race is dudes with their shirts off, yelling at people. We definitely need to appeal more to the female crowd, somehow.”

Rock and ice climber revels in the challenge of scaling mountains

For someone who spends a good amount of his free time dangling from rock faces and sheer walls of ice, Arean Ellis of Paradise is surprisingly unimpressed with extreme-sports athletes whose sole purpose is chasing highs Serving Butte, Glenn & Tehama Counties of adrenaline.

But Ellis isn’t drawn to the slopes of Mount Shasta, Mount Whitney or Mount Lassen—some of his favored destinations—for momentary thrills.

For example, he’s often been asked if he would consider skydiving.

“I wouldn’t have any control,” he said during a recent interview, shaking his head. “I’m relying on a chute to open—how do I know the guy who packed it did it right?

“When I’m mountaineering, if I’m not in control of a situation, I’m probably going to bail. Actually, if I feel I’m losing control, it’s probably already too late.”

Rather, he gets the most pleasure from setting a four- or five-day objective (he calls his expeditions “projects”) and completing it one carefully considered decision at a time. Though he pinpointed certain aspects of mountaineering he finds appealing—the solitude, natural beauty and physicality of scaling a mountain—he isn’t entirely sure why he seeks such grueling tests of his mental and physical endurance.

“That’s the age-old question. The typical response people use is ‘Because it’s there,’” Ellis said, referring to legendary British mountaineer George Mallory’s reason for his repeated attempts at reaching the summit of Mount Ever-

est. “To some degree, that’s true: ‘That mountain looks cool, I want to go climb it.’

“Some of it also has to do with conquering yourself,” he reflected. “It takes a lot to get up a mountain.”

Ellis started rock climbing a few years before he moved to Butte County about a decade ago.

He started by “reading as many books as I could get my hands on,” familiarizing himself with the equipment and techniques before he roped his friends into trying full-on rock climbing with him. He took to it immediately, beginning what would become an ongoing need to satisfy the “part of rock climbing and mountaineering that makes you want to do something more difficult.”

For Ellis, ice climbing was that next step.

About four years ago, he began testing his skills on frozen waterfalls and in shaded mountain gullies, which keep the previous year’s snow frozen through summer and into late fall.

Compared to rock climbing, ice climbing is a more mentally demanding discipline, Ellis explained.

Not only is ice more fragile than rock (it’s more prone to crack or pull away), but it changes throughout the day. A route that is hard and brittle during a morning ascent could be all but mush by mid-afternoon.

That’s why it’s important

to “read the ice,” Ellis said. He constantly takes note of cracks, texture and the sound of his pick striking the ice.

That painstaking approach, he believes, has kept him unharmed through his years of mountaineering; his worst injury to date is a strained back from shoveling snow. While climbing mountains can be “as dangerous as I want it to be,” he said, he typically opts to stay within his safety margins.

He and a climbing partner are looking forward to an ice-climbing project they discovered last winter in an adjacent county. Though he acknowledged the climb is within an hour’s drive of Chico, Ellis declined to be specific about its location.

He prefers to keep the spot off the beaten path because conquering mountains—and himself—has become a way to escape “the humdrum, the monotony of everyday life,” Ellis said.

“It’s a very simplistic endeavor. Some say, ‘It’s so technical, there’s so much to keep in mind,’ but it really comes down to, ‘I’m here, this is where I want to be, and everything I need to get there is in my pack.’”

After crossing a couple dozen suspension bridges on his mountain bike over the previous week, Brian Sweat approached one that looked a lot like the others.

It was March of this year in the Nepalese Himalayas. Sweat was riding in the annual Yak Attack race—a 10-stage, 250-mile event challenging riders from around the globe with trails as high as 18,000 feet in elevation, temperatures that ranged from highs in the mid-80s to lows in the single digits, and terrain (steep grades, streams, snow, mud and landslides) that wreaked havoc on the riders over the course of the race.

Sweat thought he could ride over this particular bridge, suspended 400 feet over a river. But in crossing, he clipped both of his handlebars on the bridge ropes at roughly 25 miles per hour; he flipped over his handlebars, landed on his back, rolled several times and skidded to a halt on his stomach.

“I thought I was dead. As soon as I caught my bar, I had that moment of, ‘If I die right now and my bike goes over, no one’s going to find me down there,’” said the 25-year-old Sweat. “You’re at the base of some mountain in the Himalayas, and it’s not like search and rescue is easy up there.”

But his bike didn’t go over. It hung over the chasm, tangled in the ropes and wires of the swaying bridge.

Sweat suffered compression fractures of three vertebrae from the crash, and he woke up the next day with snow blindness, which essentially means his eyeballs were sunburned. Furthering his discomfort, he was also on antibiotics after catching a stomach bug a few days prior. Sweat lost 20 pounds by the time he left Nepal.

“That was a rough 48-hour period,” he recalled.

Sweat didn’t finish the race with an official time. However, despite his ailments, he managed to successfully cross the finish line—an accomplishment in itself.

Something innate beyond the rush of living on the edge drives the downhill mountain biker to events like the Yak Attack.

“Everybody there had this mentality that they want-

ed to push themselves, to test the limits of their bodies and minds,” said Sweat who, during the race, carried 40 pounds of gear on his back at an elevation where the oxygen is half the amount at sea level. “This race was more mental than it was physical. That’s what compels you—to see who you really are.”

Nepal, a developing country, sits in the bottom 10 percent of the world in terms of wealth, according to the International Monetary Fund. Sweat donated about $400 worth of unused gear to local riders before he left.

While he hasn’t competed for the last five months, Sweat is looking forward to testing his body and mind in future races similar to the Yak Attack in South Africa and Mongolia.

Sweat is currently training to become a yoga instructor. Though practicing yoga and mountain biking might appear to be a dichotomy of disposition, Sweat believes the two dovetail nicely. “Mountain biking and riding are very cyclical; you use the same muscles over and over and they tighten up,” Sweat said. “Yoga is a way to stretch those muscles out, make them more powerful over the course of an entire stroke.

“Yoga calms your mind down,” he continued. “It lets you focus. On a bike, you need to focus. If you’re descending at 70 kilometers per hour down a hill in Nepal and your mind’s wandering, you’re not going to end up OK.” This relaxed temperament helps build a foundation of confidence for Sweat, leaving no room for hesitation.

“You can’t hesitate when you’re riding. That’s not part of the sport,” Sweat said. “Hesitation usually means injury—if you hesitate, you make a mistake and you fall—bad.”

Into the Open Earth Unlike Sorin, Into The Open Earth like things short and swee … sweaty. The trio’s excellent Doomfruit EP tastefully incorporates elements of punk and postrock into two-minute fireballs. One listen to “Infinite All” and you’ll know the deal.

Aberrance These guys rule. Lots of groove, killer riffs, a singer who sounds like a prehistoric bird, and you can tell they grew up on the classics. The band has a song called “Ejaculation Till Mummification.”

I’m not sure what that means, but it’s heavyfuckingmetal.

Teeph This shit is frantic. It’s Zappa meets Emperor eats Melt Banana. The title of their latest and greatest LP, Vietnamaste, says it all.

Fallon These OGs formed in the late 1980s while still in high school, playing thrash metal in Chico at a time when the hippies twirled and the indie rockers stood with arms folded. And they still kill. Come see where it all started, and bow before Fallon.

Io Torus If you make it through Io Torus’ eightminute monster “Premonition,” and are still able to sleep that night, then you’re a true hesher. Prog that’s melodic, evil and beautiful. And evil. Any guesses as to whether Nick Ferrar uses a four- or fivestring bass?

Permanent exile Telling the stories of Chilean exiles through art

Degarrod’s artistic representation of Jaime Salazar—a Chilean who fled his country for exile in the Bay Area after Augusto Pinochet took over as dictator in a 1973 coup d’état—captures the “very fractured sense of self” felt by Jaime and the eight other Chilean political exiles that Degarrod worked with for her project.

Degarrod—born in Chile, though not an exile from the Pinochet era—created the pieces in the Geographies show over a period of 18 months, from March 2007 to October 2008, after extensive interviews with each of her subjects, whom she met through La Peña Cultural Center in Berkeley. All nine exiles have lived in the Bay Area for more than three decades.

they would go back [to Chile] in one or two years,” she said. That was not the case. Until a democratically elected president took over in Chile in 1990, none of the exiles went back; in the meantime (almost 17 years in some cases), they “didn’t want to settle [in the United States], so life was pretty much ‘in parentheses’ [for them].”

And when they all did finally go back to Chile, after “dreaming of their homeland, they went back to a country they could not recognize.” One of the women, Degarrod said, “would walk on the streets [in her former hometown] and say, ‘I know that person,’ but no, that person would [have been] 17 years older than that.”

In addition to feeling a strong sense of disconnect from their former homeland, all nine exiles—they still refer to themselves by that term—had children since leaving Chile, and “they didn’t want to give them a ‘double exile.’” In other words, they did not want to put their kids through what they had been through, so they all returned to the States.

It took several sessions to get the exiles to open up about their memories of what it was like to be forced to leave Chile after enduring awful conditions under Pinochet, Degarrod said. “I would make art based on our conversations,” she said, which she would take back to each of them in their next session for approval or for suggestions for any changes she should make in order to most accurately represent their experience. “It was collaborative, but I was the hands who did this,” she said.

“I needed to see my country from the outside, to take a break,” says Salazar, in a rather understated fashion, in the moving video titled “Jaime.” After finally returning to Chile, Salazar—who spent time as a political prisoner in a penitentiary in Santiago during Pinochet’s reign—found he had a “different feeling” about his homeland.

He sums up that he has “a lot of love” as well as “a lot of hate” for Chile. As for his painful memories: “I Ω try to put them to the side.”

mates received notices of rules and expectations for all enrolling students. Among them was a stodgy line requiring that no by student drink any alcohol before Alastair the age of 21. But the notice made Bland an exception, allowing any students of Italian descent to drink as much wine as they pleased.

“I remember my dad reading that and saying, ‘Well, yeah, of course my son will be drinking wine,’” said LaRocca, owner and winemaker at LaRocca Vineyards in Forest Ranch. “‘We’re Italian.’”

Italians have been consuming fermented grape juice since the Roman era and were among the first immigrants to bring advanced winemaking culture to America. Philip Mazzei, a wine merchant born in Florence, sailed to colonial America in the 1770s and is today widely credited as having introduced European grapevines to the United States. A recently released wine, Philip, from the Marchesi Mazzei winery in Tuscany, honors Mazzei’s role in American wine culture.

Meanwhile, vines and wine arrived on the West Coast, before California was a state, with Spanish priests of the coastal missions. It was Italians, though, who drove the widespread planting of grapes throughout California, beginning about a decade before the Gold Rush.

Today, names like Sebastiani, Delicato, Rossi, Gallo, Mondavi, Trione, Barra, Foppiano, and Viansa speak to the Italian influence on California’s wine culture.

In Mendocino’s Russian River Valley, John Parducci played a major role, beginning in the 1960s, in helping boost the quality and reputation of the region’s, and of California’s, wines. Parducci was the first winemaker to begin labeling wines by grape variety, and he became known for excellence in cabernet sauvignon, zinfandel and petite sirah.

It was Parducci who purchased LaRocca’s very first load of estate-grown grapes in 1984.

“I had heard stories about winemakers tasting the fruit and rejecting it, and I was terrified he wouldn’t buy mine,” LaRocca recalled. “I had two little kids, and every penny to my name was in that bin of fruit in the back of my truck.”

But Parducci, who knew a good grape when he tasted one, bought that vintage and many more to come, and LaRocca would become one of his regular suppliers of cabernet sauvignon grapes.

not use Italian grape varieties. Rather, they mostly use the mainstream contributions from France, like cab, pinot noir, merlot and chardonnay.

But winemaker Berton Bertagna, of Bertagna Son Kissed Vineyards in Chico, has chosen to honor his family’s roots by focusing almost entirely on three of Italy’s most important grapes—sangiovese, barbera, and pinot grigio.

“The whole reason we started making wine is our Italian ancestry,” said Bertagna, whose great-grandfather moved from the northern region of Quartesana, Italy, to Butte County 95 years ago.

Bertagna believes that Italian varieties may be too light and subdued for the American palate, which has come to favor heavier wines like cab, merlot and oaked chardonnay.

Even within Italy, winemakers have shown a fondness for French grapes. The prominent Frescobaldi family introduced the first merlot vines to the Tuscan region of Montalcino in the 1990s, and today their Luce della Vite estate showcases wines made with both sangiovese and merlot grapes in a very untraditional blend, and the aforementioned Philip wine is a Tuscan rendition of cabernet sauvignon. In fact, “super Tuscan” wines are now a recognized style made by locally unconventional techniques—usually with additions of Italian-grown Bordeaux grapes.

of zinfandel or cabernet sauvignon each week in the 1960s, and these varieties would become two of LaRocca Vineyards’ flagships.

But Phil LaRocca has more recently placed emphasis on growing the grapes of his heritage, especially barbera and sangiovese. Bertagna is delving deeper into his roots, too, and is now growing experimental plots of dolcetto and montepulciano, both red-wine grapes.

“These grapes got forgotten in California because they don’t make such a big, loud statement as a cab,” Bertagna said. “They’re just easy-drinking table wines, and that’s why I like them.” Ω

…Like Clockwork Queens of the Stone Age Matador Everybody has that band. You know, the one you used to love/now can’t stand/secretly hope will someday reclaim their once-righteous name? But at the end of the day, all you have is reality, and when it comes to Queens of the Stone Age, reality bites. Josh Homme and his rotating cast of QOTSA members have achieved just about every level of rock ’n’ roll triumph. But aside from a smattering of A-sides, the band has, well, how I should put this—sucked since Nick Oliveri got the boot in 2004. The Queens’ latest release, …Like Clockwork, happens to be their first in six years. Whereas the band’s previous effort, 2007’s Era Vulgaris, was flat-out bad, Clockwork is simply boring. The faux-sexy “Smooth Sailing” has Homme ready to “blow” his “load over the status quo,” while “I Appear Missing” finds Homme lilting his patented falsetto to new levels of indulgence. Even the more aggressive cuts like “My God Is the Sun” and “Fairweather Friends” are somehow tame. You can read the who’s-who list of collaborators all you want—Dave Grohl, Mark Lanegan, Trent Reznor, Brody Dalle, Elton John(?!)—this is simply a tired sound. If it weren’t for decent tracks like “I Sat by the Ocean” and “Kalopsia,” …Like Clockwork would be the lamest thing since “Disco Duck.” But hey, the album debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, so what the hell do I know?

Get thy Bearings Robert Walter’s 20th Congress The Royal Potato Family I don’t know who first put the “fun” in “funk,” but for the last 20 years that Robert Walter has been seated at his Hammond B3 organ, he hasn’t let any grass grow under his B3’s pedals. A founding member of The Greyboy Allstars, Walter has released a handful of albums during the past decade that feature him in various settings, as well as with the 20th Congress, and he employs his full keyboard arsenal here—B3, piano, electric piano and synthesizer—on what’s described as his “funkiest material since [the group’s inception] in 1999.” The disc gets off to a great and greasy funky start with “Hunk,” a sassy strutting tune that features a smooth tenor sax solo by Karl Denson, a co-founder of The Greyboy Allstars. Denson also shows his impressive flute chops on the sensual “Don’t Chin the Dog,” a tricky number with Elgin Park’s hypnotically repetitious bass line nicely fueled by Aaron Redfield’s drums and Chuck Prada’s percussion. The rhythm section get full marks for its tasty work on every one of the CD’s nine tunes—especially Redfield! Although the accent is on the funk, their ghostly version of Hendrix’s “Up from the Skies” (which also includes tenorman Cochemea Gastelum) shows another side of the group.

One long, strange and clever night of beer, bros and aliens

I Dead, Hot Fuzz or Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, you’ve missed out on some of the f you haven’t seen Shaun of the

most engaging, thoughtful pop-culture satires of the last decade. While ostensibly nostalgic spit-takes on director Edgar Wright’s by Craig favorite obsessions—zomBlamer bies, buddy-cop action flicks, graphic novels—each of those movies are also rich in subtext and exhibit a giddy joie de pop culture that deconstructs the tropes of whatever genre he is targeting, rebooting them in fresh new ways.

The World’s End is the The World’s End final entry in Wright and coStarring Simon writer Simon Pegg’s “Three Pegg, Nick Frost, Martin Freeman Flavours Cornetto trilogy,” in and Rosamund which each genre at hand is Pike. Directed by represented by the presence Edgar Wright. of a different Cornetto ice Cinemark 14. cream flavor: the red-colored Rated R. strawberry for Shaun of the Dead; a blue Cornetto for Hot Fuzz and its boys in blue; and the science-fictiony green mint-chocolate-chip served up this time around.

As in the first two entries, Pegg and Nick Frost star, the Poor former as Gary “The King” King, one of those dudes we all know who can’t get over Fair that one shining moment in his youth that symbolized all the potential that the future held, and instead of striding Good confidently down that path, locked onto that golden moment, becoming increasVery Good ingly constipated by nostalgia as the years fly by. crawl that he and his chums (Frost, Eddie Marsan, Martin Freeman and Paddy Considine) attempted back in the day. Now a dissipated loser who still sports his goth uniform of non-conformity (cribbed from a Sisters of Mercy video), The King pulls out of his passive suicide long enough to get the band back together to return to their sleepy hometown and finish that unfulfilled goal from 20 years before: a pint slammed in 12 different pubs over the course of one glorious night.

There’s just one problem: In their absence, their hometown has been cosmically Starbucked, homogenized to the point of becoming a vanilla Cornetto, albeit one laced with razor blades. Aliens using Invasion of the Body Snatchers as a textbook have slowly taken over as part of their insidious goal of intergalactic niceness. The plot here is pretty straightforward, with the boys slowly realizing the threat over the course of chugging their way to the final stop—a pub called The World’s End. It’s not so much about the destination as it is the trip itself, and it’s a long, weird one.

As per expectations, Wright indulges in his own established leitmotifs while at the same time easing from the overt homage to films of the source genre (sci-fi in this case) that marked the two prior entries.

If The World’s End has a weakness, it’s that the self-referential gags aren’t really built upon, and that the first act is a little heavy on forced banter that overreaches for the clever.

On the other hand, clever banter is nice in itself, so that’s a small caveat (a very small one).

Actually, Wright’s films are normally so overstuffed with clever gags and witty dialogue that watching them once is not enough.

Satisfaction actually increases with repeated viewings. And, while at first blush The World’s End isn’t as completely satisfying as his previous entries, I trust the man’s abilities enough to go out on that proverbial limb and say that once this puppy hits DVD, my opinion likely will evolve. Ω

20 Feet from Stardom

Morgan Neville’s richly entertaining documentary celebrates the female backup singers who made crucial contributions to classic rock music in the 1960s, ’70s, and ’80s. As such, 20 Feet from Stardom is a kind of behind-the-scenes look at a particularly interesting aspect of the pop-music industry. But its most powerful point is that, while they were not quite in the spotlight (hence that “20 Feet”), the best of the backup singers were right at the very lively heart of some great music. Neville makes sure that they get some spotlight time here via a combination of archival footage, performance excerpts, recent interviews with the singers themselves (Darlene Love, Lisa Fischer, Merry Clayton, Claudia Lennear, etc.), and commentary from the rock stars they worked with (Mick Jagger, Stevie Wonder, Sheryl Crow, among others). Blue Jasmine

Woody Allen’s latest is an updated homage to A Streetcar Named Desire, with Cate Blanchett starring as a fading New York socialite who is forced to move in with her sister in San Francisco after her marriage falls apart. Paradise Cinema 7. Rated PG-13.

The Butler

Lee Daniels (Precious) directs this story based on the life of Eugene Allen, a White House butler who witnessed 34 years of U.S. history from his vantage point at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. Starring Forest Whitaker, Oprah Winfrey and John Cusack. Cinemark 14, Feather River Cinemas and Paradise Cinema 7. Rated PG-13.

Despicable Me 2

Super-villain Gru (Steve Carell) turned straight in the original Despicable Me, so what’s left for him to do in round two? Fall in love. He’s also trying to stop an evil-doer who has stolen a chemical that turns any living creature into a killing machine. But the roman-

tic subplot, involving flirtations between Gru and his detective partner Lucy (Kristen Wiig), proves more entertaining than the mediocre storyline about the search for criminal suspect Eduardo (Benjamin Bratt, in exaggerated Latino-stereotype mode). Whatever magic is lost from the original film is recovered by Gru’s tiny minions: His helpers look like aliens but possess the charm of babbling babies—a weird combination that’s onscreen gold (as was proven by the booming laughs from every child in the theater). Cinemark 14. Rated PG —R.B.

Elysium

Writer/director Neill Blomkamp’s follow-up to District 9 takes place in the year 2154, when all of Earth is a Third-World slum and one of its residents (Matt Damon) is trying to escape to Elysium—a utopian society on a nearby space station where the wealthy elite live—in order to save himself and the planet.

Jobs

In attempting to illustrate what made an ambitious man tick, Jobs itself isn’t a very ambitious film—more a homogenized series of events that smack of re-enactment rather than a collection of moments that illuminate the subject for which it attempts to create empathy. Not that empathy and Steve Jobs are usually mentioned in the same breath.

In fact, the late co-founder and CEO of Apple comes across as a sociopath, and the film doesn’t do much to offer a counterargument. As the title character, Ashton Kutcher has the look, but lacks the chops. And if there was redemption to all of Jobs’ ruthlessness, the movie fails to cultivate it. Instead, after he ultimately destroys everyone who ever crossed him, we’re rewarded with a final image of a smirking Jobs, his feet kicked up on the desk of an empty boardroom. Paradise Cinema 7. Rated PG-13 —C.B.

Kick-Ass 2

A sequel to the comics-to-film story of young ordinary citizens who don costumes and transform themselves into real-life superheroes. This time KickAss and Hit-Girl are joined by more citizen-heroes who are gathering to do battle against a rising army of super-villains. Feather River Cinemas. Rated R.

The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones

The first installment of the latest film franchise based on young-adult novels, this one the best-selling fantasy series The Mortal Instruments by Cassandra Clare, about a race of angel/human warriors called shadowhunters who are battling to protect Earth from demons. Cinemark 14, Feather River Cinemas and Paradise Cinema 7. Rated PG-13.

Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters

The second installment in the film franchise based on Rick Riordan’s young-adult fantasy series about the young Percy Jackson, who is drawn into the world of the gods when he discovers he’s the son of Poseidon.

This time out, Percy and friends set out to find the Golden Fleece. Cinemark 14. Rated PG.

Planes

A 3-D computer-animated feature film about a cropdusting plane (voiced by Dane Cook) who is afraid of heights, yet longs to compete in an aerial race. Cinemark 14, Feather River Cinemas and Paradise Cinema 7. Rated PG.

The Way, Way Back

The Descendants screenwriters Nat Faxon and Jim Rash wrote and directed this story about a young teen boy (Liam James) who, while on a summer vacation with his mom (Toni Collette) and her jerk of boyfriend (Steve Carell), comes into his own with a little help from the free-spirited manager (Sam Rockwell) of a water park. Paradise Cinema 7. Rated PG-13.

We’re the Millers

Saturday Night Live’s Jason Sudeikis plays a drug dealer who agrees to smuggle a big shipment of pot into the country from Mexico for one of his clients (Ed Helms). In order to avoid suspicion, he hires a stripper (Jennifer Aniston), a runaway girl and a virgin teen boy to be his fake family as they drive their RV back to the U.S. Cinemark 14, Feather River Cinemas and Paradise Cinema 7. Rated R.

We gotta rock-a, rock-a, rock-a nonstop tonight/ Uh huh, at the government center—Jonathan Richman

VOIR DIRE Earlier this week, Arts DEVO drove his dusty Volvo 20-or-so miles over to Oroville to report for jury duty. I wasn’t chosen to serve, but as I spent the better part of my day in the heart of our government center, I thought about how so many of the defining moments in the lives of Butte County residents are connected to this cluster of institutional-beige buildings—court, county jail, clerk/recorder, assessor, juvenile hall, sheriff, coroner, and (before it moved to new locations in Oroville and Chico) the employment and social-services department.

Many of the highs and lows of my 24 years in the county have roots at the government center. It’s where Mrs. DEVO and I signed on to spending our lives together 20 years ago, and where we filed the deed to our first home 19 years later. It’s where we sought assistance with medical coverage as poor students and were told that we qualified for a county medical-services program (CMSP) with a $1,000 per month deductible, and where we have both gladly reported for our duty as members of the jury pool.

And, before I was married, it’s also one of the scenes in a story involving the 20-year-old me walking alone, barefoot, along the side of Highway 70 at night. In the spirit of The Butcher Shop theater festival happening this weekend (Aug. 31 and Sept. 1—see This Week, page 24, for info), I will present the story in one-act form:

Sir: Hello, Mr. Barefoot. It’s dark outside and you have no lights on.

Me: Yes sir, I know. I was just reaching down …

Sir: I’m going to go talk to my CB radio now.

Me: … to turn on my headlights.

Sir: The man on the radio says you have a problem.

Me: Yes sir, I think I owe him $50.

Sir: Let’s drive you to Oroville in a van.

Me: But …

(Scene: Back of white van, no windows) Sir: Better buckle you up. Put your wrists in these shackles so I can lock your hands to this giant belt around your waist.

Me: Sir, I don’t mean to complain, but this guy next to me is super loud.

Guy next to me: I wanna call my girlfriend! Why won’t you let me call my girlfriend!?

Vic Cantu Jill Symons Hernandez is living proof that growing older doesn’t have to mean getting slower.

Hernandez is 53, a mother of five with two jobs, and she just broke three world swimming records at the U.S. Masters Swimming Summer Nationals in Mission Viejo, Aug. 7-11. Hernandez had previously broken world records twice over the past eight years. The native Chicoan also graduated from Chico State last year and all five of her children (including Sarah, pictured at right with Jill) have made their college swim teams.

How did it feel to break the world records?

It felt really good and fulfilling to have all my hard work pay off. Plus, it was great having my son David and daughters Sarah and Gracie there screaming for me. But I try not to focus on records. That takes the fun out of it. I just try to do my best and have fun at this age.

Were you surprised?

Yes, especially since the type of pool I swam in at the Masters was one I had very little experience with. It’s a 50-meter “long course,” about 55 yards long, and virtually all my life I’ve competed and practiced in “short course” pools, about 25 yards long. The only long-course pools I’ve competed in were in 2005 and 2011.

How did you become such a great swimmer?

I swim five days a week starting at 6 a.m. at In Motion Fitness, and have a great coach, Brian Clark. As a child, I was on the AquaJets swim team and have coached them off and on for 20 years. Plus, my husband Mike is a physical therapist and gives me good advice.

What’s the response been?

Everyone is pretty excited. Chico is a very supportive and healthy community. I’ve gotten lots of Facebook compliments and there were huge congratulatory signs at both my jobs. My husband is also very proud.

Can you list all the records you’ve broken?

What advice do you have for others?

This August, I broke records in the women’s 50- to 54-year-old class for the 200-meter freestyle [2:13.18]; the 400-meter freestyle [4:40.66] and the 400-meter individual medley [5:30.32]. In 2011, I broke the women’s record

We all have to exercise for our whole lives.

Learn to enjoy it and make it a habit. If you’re older, don’t over-train. It’s better to undertrain. And everyone should try swimming the Masters.

A date I remember dating—one interview after another. It’s been a long time since I went on a real date, where there was a reasonable chance of something nasty happening. Janice and I had two dates, fireworks Friday night and a picnic Monday, and we were a couple, just like that.

Since at least high school, I have had friendships with women where we could hang out in any context without my ever making a move on them. It’s not necessarily that I never thought about exploring their orifices; I definitely have, even if only long enough to decide, “Oh, Hell no!” There are some I have to reconsider every time I see them; it’s that close.

I have a few women friends I occasionally have coffee or a meal with. They’re all friends of Janice too, sometimes primarily friends of Janice, and being with them is entirely unromantic. That’s changing.

Based on early signs, I resigned from Zoosk.com a few months ago, in anticipation of not resorting to websites for company. Having seen the very same signs before, I hung on to Match.com just in case, and I may let it go, too.

I recently went on an offline date, and a blind one

at that. A reader contacted me and we met for a movie. I actually didn’t think of it as a date right away.

I didn’t want to and I tried not to, but sitting there in the theater with a lovely stranger gave me the fantods, something I haven’t experienced in many years and is a sure indication that a date is occurring.

I was intensely aware of her presence and I remembered how often I had sat in that very row with Janice and how that’s all over now, and then I wasn’t even in the theater but in my same old sadness. I don’t think my date noticed me weeping in the dark.

I can’t say I felt much guilt about being in another mutual audition, and Janice would never ask for or expect forbearance from me. I did experience a certain dread, though, and I thought I heard screaming violins in the background, so I’m not making any sudden moves and I’m definitely not going down in the cellar to see what’s making that moaning sound.

In this phase, I have no thoughts of marriage and a family, which is what sprang to my mind and Janice’s when we met. I don’t figure I’ve got more than a handful of years left, and I ain’t aiming to try to find somebody to take Janice’s place—mother of my children and all that. I’ve already had a mate. I’m gonna keep my eyes and heart and mind open just the same.
