Engagement is crucial It was exciting to see a packed City Council chambers Tuesday

evening. A large cross-section of the community showed up for the regular meeting to discuss a long list of agenda items. In the gallery among the regular gadflies were local musicians and environmentalists, as well as a good showing from the Chico Tea Party Patriots and other local conservatives.

Several speakers during the meeting voiced distrust in the city’s new management team and its plans for bringing the general fund budget back into the black. They brought up some good questions, and clearly won’t be letting up until they get some answers. Their concerns underscore the need for more transparency at all levels of city operations. The City Council appears to have heard this message loud and clear, and we look forward to further discussions.

For some folks, it was their first time communicating with city policy makers. Almost every person who ended up speaking at the lectern added something valuable to the conversation. And despite the meeting going long—well past 10 p.m.—the council members and city staff kept their composure.

Everyone, it seems, left the gathering better informed.

It was during this meeting, for example, where we learned that Chico Police Chief Kirk Trostle is a drummer. He explained that he put forward an extensive—some say draconian—set of proposed regulations for alcohol-selling establishments to give the council a comprehensive set of options from which to choose. Even he would not personally be in favor of all of them, especially an option to prohibit drumming.

A lot of people were understandably disappointed that the discussion regarding those rules—especially as it relates to live music—was postponed. The panel will address this subject at an upcoming workshop and again at the next meeting on Aug. 20. Those who didn’t have a chance to speak shouldn’t give up. Civic engagement is oftentimes inconvenient, but it’s crucial to the process. Ω

Captivity bites A trainers interact with the whales and dolphins. As I got older, I started to feel uneasy about my visits there. It wasn’t s a kid, I loved SeaWorld. I loved watching the

until I was much older that I realized that these majestic creatures do not belong in tanks, forced to perform silly acts with trainers. They belong in the ocean, with their families, to which they are bonded to for life.

In February 2010, Tilikum, a 12,000pound bull orca (killer whale), killed the much beloved trainer Dawn Brancheau.

The news of her death shocked the country. Americans thought of “Shamu” as a lovable icon, not a killer. But the truth is by he’d already contributed to the deaths of Sarah Downs two other people.

Tilikum figures prominently into a documentary film called Blackfish, which The author is a local animal activist and features shocking footage and heartbreakhost of Sentients on ing interviews with former trainers. He tearfully recalls the capture of KZFR 90.1 FM. whale calves nearly 40 years ago while their mothers howled mournfully for them. He says in the film, “We were only after the little ones.” To this day, Crowe seems haunted by the sounds of mother and calf being separated.

Passed in 1972, the federal Marine Mammal Protection Act prohibits the capture and removal of marine mammals in U.S. waters, but SeaWorld Orlando, where Tilikum still lives, continued to obtain killer-whale capture permits under an exception for educational display.

In November 1983, Tilikum was captured off the east coast of Iceland at around 2 or 3 years of age. If you do the math, it means that he’s been in captivity for about 30 years.

It is widely believed that Tilikum kills (not necessarily on purpose) because he is frustrated, bored and, most of all, lonely. He has no outlet for these feelings, and no other whales to bond or connect with.

SeaWorld owns 26 of the 42 orcas in captivity. Killer whales have been performing at marine parks since around 1965. One-hundredthirty of them have died in captivity. Mental distress runs rampant at the facilities—from stomach problems to gnawing on their enclosures.

Tilikum and the hundreds of other animals held in captivity at SeaWorld facilities do not belong there. There are no sound arguments to defend these practices. If you want to help, don’t support these facilities, and in Chico you can watch Blackfish, opening at the Pageant Theatre on Friday, Aug. 9. Ω

Worthy of celebration While the CN&R celebrates America’s favorite alcoholic beverage

through our first-ever Beer Issue and its accompanying Chico Beer Week, there is, of course, a giant elephant in the room: Chico’s drinking problem.

In fact, we probably couldn’t have picked a more controversial time to publish a Beer Issue. On the one hand, local business owners and members of our vibrant music community are upset over the proposed rules to help regulate businesses that serve alcohol. And on the other hand, entities like Chico State and the city are looking for ways to curb alcohol abuse.

We’re not encouraging binge drinking, nor do we want to condone it.

We know about the six recent alcohol-related deaths of college students, and we know there’s a local binge-drinking problem (the 2012 Healthy Minds Study showed that Chico State students “are almost double the national average when it comes to binge drinking” compared to other colleges).

But there’s a large part of Chico that is not defined by the party-’til-youpuke culture. Indeed, there are plenty of ways in which beer is a positive part of Chico’s identity. Think about the pioneering Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. and its community-minded, environmentally conscious policies; its employment of hundreds of Chicoans; and, of course, its world-famous brews we enjoy straight from the source.

Chico is an active and social town, and we love few things more than communing over beers around the barbecue, at a concert, or at one of the many Chico bars and restaurants that fuel our economy.

The vast majority of us are able to partake without setting any fires, throwing anything at the police or putting ourselves in life-threatening situations. And this Beer Issue—and the ensuing Chico Beer Week—is for us.

Just drink responsibly, and please don’t drink and drive. Ω

Roundabouts and beer As I sit writing this column, gazing out the window every so often to the corner of Second and Flume streets, I’m well aware that I’m witnessing the calm before the storm. It’s Tuesday afternoon and the major construction on the First and Second Street Couplet project ended last week with the remainder of the resurfacing work. Most of the detail work, such as road striping, has been completed, too. It’s down to the fine details now—landscaping and signage work.

On Thursday (Aug. 8), the streets outside the CN&R office will once again be buzzing with the sound of vehicles. That’s the date the intersection—now a roundabout—is scheduled to reopen to traffic.

But it certainly won’t be the first time cars have gone through the area. Despite closed-to-traffic signs at all entry points over the past couple months, I’ve watched a handful of drivers head into the area, right over compacted dirt roadways teeming with awestruck—and very patient—construction workers. D’oh!

One of my colleagues told me she’d seen a driver traveling the wrong way on the roundabout—clockwise. I’m hoping that doesn’t happen once the street has reopened. Signs with right-pointing arrows are in place, signaling which way to go. And even the decorative-looking outer ring of the roundabout has an arrow-like pattern. (In the middle of writing that last sentence, someone in a green Ford Explorer took an early tour.)

Some people hate change, but I have to think this is a good one. I cannot count how many fender-benders I’ve seen or heard over the six years I’ve worked at this corner. The roundabout should provide a much safer way to get in and out of downtown, once people adjust to it. I plan on getting to the office a little early to see how some of the first drivers handle it all.

Speaking of firsts. This week is our first-ever Beer Issue, the inaugural year of what we hope will become an annual celebration of craft beer. Thanks to the Sierra Nevada Brewing Co., Chico is pretty much the epicenter of the craft-brewing revolution. The brewery—one I’d never heard of until I adopted Chico as my hometown 15 years ago—has been an inspiration to many brewers-in-themaking, as well as beer drinkers, including me.

I grew up in the Livermore wine country and already had an appreciation for the grape, but I wasn’t fully aware of the world of craft brewing until I was introduced to Sierra Nevada’s signature Pale Ale. I’m still more of a wine drinker, but I know what I like when it comes to beer—the craft varieties.

We’re well aware of the irony of the issue hitting the stands at the same time the city and other groups grapple with ways to curb Chico’s drinking culture. For our part, craft brewing is an art that we don’t associate with binge drinking—the real problem (see Editorial, page 4).

Nevertheless, we scheduled the issue weeks before classes begin at Chico State and Butte College. We hope you see this issue as we do—a celebration of an industry with indelible and positive ties to our hometown.

Two sides to alcohol policies Re “Contentious conditions” (Newslines, by Ken Smith, Aug. 1): This is insane. It’s like using a fire hose to put out a smoking ashtray. Don’t get me wrong—one person dying as a result of alcohol is too many. However, the approach is absurd. With so many restrictions on the books already, adding a ton more will make no difference.

If Chief [Kirk Trostle] is trying to start his own prohibition movement, he is well on his way. A reasonable, level-headed approach is what is needed. Not some knee-jerk, fearbased, draconian proposals. It seems to me the best approach would be to look at all of the existing restrictions to see what in fact works and doesn’t work. Opinions and anecdotes don’t count. Then, look at what—if anything—needs to be added, and then apply the restrictions across the board. Having different rules for different establishments is blatantly wrong.

Now, the chief is an intelligent, fairminded individual, it seems to me. He means well, but it is no way to start a reasonable discussion.

Massachusetts passed a no-happy-hour rule and strict social-ordinance ban on on-site alcohol establishments in the early 1980s.

This was in addition to existing auditing and compliance management of establishments that sold alcohol for off-site consumption, aka package stores.

It’s no coincidence that Massachusetts has no colleges or universities—public or private—on the infamous “party school” lists.

This is astounding, considering Boston, Mass., is the undisputed “college town” in the United States with more than 300,000 students living on or off campus.

I’m hopeful Chico 2013 will finally catch up with proven techniques in place for decades in other college towns.

However, the proposed live-music restrictions are draconian and a clear overreach.

Re “No stamp of approval” (Newslines, by Tom Gascoyne, Aug. 1): When elected officials and officers of the court are confronted with legislative decisions or lawful renderings, most often they will recuse themselves, as this is the responsible, ethical and decent action to take in such situations.

Congressman and rice farmer Doug LaMalfa chose instead to vote for more government “bailout” money in the form of farm subsidies, renamed “crop insurance” in an attempt to camouflage the Republican’s shameless feeding frenzy of taxpayer dollars.

Particularly disgraceful is voting to give money to agriculture in the event farmers fall on “hard times” [while simultaneously adopting a bill that does not include funding] for the 47 million Americans that rely on food-stamps assistance to barely meet minimum nutritional standards.

Since 1995, LaMalfa and family have fed from the government-

subsidy trough to the tune of $5.1 million. When LaMalfa says, “Don’t criticize farmers when your mouth is full,” he does so with a mouthful of taxpayer money.

Ditty wasn’t amusing Re “City manager sing-along” (Letters, by Linda Hathorn, Aug. 1): How insensitive and cruel. The ditty shows the ignorance and lack of information demonstrated by a member of the general public.

Brian Nakamura was hired to bring the city of Chico back from the brink of insolvency. How many City Council meetings, Finance Committee meetings, and Economic Development Committee meetings did she attend over the last six years? How did she arrive at her nasty little ditty— have help from the likes of Bob Mulholland or perhaps Ann Schwab or perhaps former City Manager David Burkland, or our tell-the-truth-and-nothing-but-thetruth former finance director, Jennifer Hennessy?

What’s being done must be done if the city is to survive the financial devastation that has been brought upon us by the current and former liberal councils. If you have better solutions, pay attention, attend meetings and speak up.

Blame parents, not ATVs Re “Trauma season” (Healthlines,

by Evan Tuchinsky, July 25): The photo with this story depicts a youth rider with no hel-

met or protective gear riding a low-quality machine. The article then goes on to mention toddler injuries. Most ATVs are not designed to carry passengers, let alone small children. Parents must make sure to protect their children by purchasing age- and size-appropriate, quality machines, and protective clothing including boots and a properly-fitting, safetyapproved helmet.

Also, ATV riding is not a summer sport due to the higher temperatures and dusty conditions.

The author has done a great disservice to the ATV community by showing ATVs as an integral part of trauma season, when the true problem lies with improper parental supervision.

Fascism lives on The Zimmerman verdict is emblematic of larger racist and fascist ideologies driving America.

Observing this troubling trend in the ’80s, I concluded “America is the debt collector for a worldwide protection racket.” During the Iran-Contra hearings, Sen. Daniel Inouye stated, “There exists a shadowy government with its own Air Force, its own Navy, its own fundraising mechanism, and the ability to pursue its own ideas of the national interest, free from all checks and balances, and free from the law itself.”

This shadowy influence hasn’t diminished. Laws like “stand your ground” demonstrate that Bush’s Doctrine of Pre-emptive Strikes has trickled down to the smallest, most depraved component of us.

Trickle-down immorality— unlike trickle-down economics— works.

MORE POT PULLED

The Butte County Sheriff’s Office uprooted more marijuana growing in the foothills Aug. 5, when its Special Enforcement Unit served a search warrant on Bell Ranch Road in Berry Creek, just above Lake Oroville.

Deputies detained Maqlayvanh Malay, 40, of Sacramento, who was allegedly cultivating marijuana in one of 11 pot plots found on the property. A short time later, deputies located and detained Sommai Louanglath, 42, of Sacramento, and Khamfanh Khamphouphet, 40, of Wisconsin, both of whom were allegedly cultivating marijuana in one of the other plots.

A search of a mobile home at the site led to the discovery of $6,620 in cash. All told, 305 plants were yanked from the plots. A sheriff’s office press release said “the marijuana was being grown under the guise of Proposition 215,” the medical-marijuana law passed in 1996.

CHICOAN INFECTED WITH WNV

The first human case of West Nile virus (WNV) in Butte County this year was reported by the Butte County Public Health Department Aug. 6.

The victim was described as an elementaryschool-age child from north Chico.

Everyone, regardless of age, is susceptible to WNV; people 50 years of age and up are more vulnerable, as are those with diabetes or hypertension, said a BCPHD press release.

WNV in humans has been detected in 14 California counties so far this year. In Butte County, five dead birds, 13 sentinel chickens, one squirrel and 14 mosquito pools have tested positive for the virus.

“We are definitely seeing WNV activity in Butte County,” said Dr. Mark Lundberg, Butte County’s public-health officer. “The public should take extra care to avoid mosquito bites.”

The press release also advised “eliminating all sources of standing water on your property, including flower pots, old car tires, rain gutters and pet bowls.”

SUBSIDIES BEYOND DEATH

Just after the U.S. House of Representatives passed a farm bill last month that continues crop-subsidy payments but strips funding for food stamps, it was announced that between 2008 and 2012, the USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service sent $10.6 million in subsidy payments to more than 1,000 farmers who had been dead for more than a year, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

Additionally, a government audit determined that the USDA does not have the means to make sure the subsidies get sent to the right people.

Ironically, in May, when the House version of the farm bill still included food stamps, Rep. Doug LaMalfa (R-Richvale, pictured), an area rice farmer and regular recipient of crop subsidies ($5.1 million since 1995 to him and his family), successfully added an amendment to the bill that would require the use of electronic databases to make sure food-stamp applicants were qualified to receive them.

“These ongoing conditions include continuous ‘particulate rain’ from the HVAC [heating, ventilation and air-conditioning] system, water infiltration and flooding, stained and moldy ceiling tiles, the presence of rodents and their feces, inadequate and faulty ventilation, improper storage of radioactive materials, sewer gases leaking from sink drains, and clouds of rock dust and chemical fumes wafting from laboratories,” reads the report, which was prepared by McMurtry and his wife, retired environmental sciences professor Karolyn “Gina” Johnston, who also worked in the building for many years before health problems forced her to retire in 2009.

Johnston suffered from adult-onset asthma and underwent numerous sinus surgeries during her tenure in the building; she quit working after developing an as-yet-unexplained tremor in her hand that is so severe she can’t write. McMurtry said other staff members’ ailments include sinus and respiratory issues, early-onset Parkinson’s disease, severe skin rashes; in some cases, there have been early deaths.

Prompted by McMurtry’s ongoing

complaints, Chico State’s Department of Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) conducted microscopic analysis on the particulate rain—a coating of black dust that often covers surfaces in the building in question—confirming the dust included “mold spores and hyphae, insect parts, pollen, rock dust, etc.”

Feeling the analysis fell short, McMurtry cultured the dust himself to perform chemical testing, which revealed the presence of two mycotoxins—trichothecene and aflatoxin B1 (AFB1). His findings were confirmed in July, at McMurtry’s own expense, by an independent certified laboratory, New Jersey-based EMSL Analytical Inc. The report is annotated with several sources identifying these substances as “potent neurotoxins, carcinogens, mutagens, teratogens and immunosuppressants.” AFB1, according to one of the studies referenced, may figure prominently in the “induction of human lung and liver cancer, as well as other cancers,” and McMurtry noted that both substances are so toxic they have been used in chemical warfare.

The report sent to Chico State staff and faculty Monday was partly derived from a larger study McMurtry and Johnston presented to EHS and university administration several months ago.

When the recent test results confirmed the presence of mycotoxins, the couple felt compelled to share their findings with colleagues.

“These concerns for our health have led us to believe we have an ethical obligation to inform other building occu-

pants or visitors of potential risks,” the pair’s report reads. “These substances may be present in the ventilation of other buildings on campus.

“The university had ethical and contractual obligations to provide a healthy and safe working environment for employees. Knowing that unsafe working conditions existed, they failed to meet these obligations.”

In response to McMurtry’s report,

Joe Wills, Chico State’s director of Public Affairs, confirmed that EHS’ microscopic testing of dust from a vent in McMurtry’s office last spring identified mold spores and hyphae. Wills said EHS officials and experts consulted by Chico State said that these were common to many environments and weren’t cause for concern.

He said the same experts were consulted regarding McMurtry’s further testing, and they said he achieved the results only because he cultured the samples, and that this doesn’t necessarily indicate the presence of dangerous mycotoxins.

Wills countered many of McMurtry’s other claims, explaining the building has a hospital-grade air-ventilation system to filter out toxins, and that experiments and scientific processes are conducted under fume hoods to ensure hazardous chemicals aren’t released into circulated air.

“Right now, based on everything we know, we’re convinced it’s not a sick building, that it’s a healthy building to be in and to work in,” Wills said. “But if he brings new information to us, we’ll absolutely review it. If we have to do

new testing based on something he or someone else brings forward, we will definitely do it.”

Wills agreed that the building—built in 1961—could use some repairs, acknowledging that it has problems with water infiltration and leaks. He said the school has long planned on replacing the building, but it’s not currently feasible.

“There’s sort of a queue for these projects and it’s definitely in line,” he said. “It’s in the master plan and we’re hoping to have it rebuilt in some years.”

During a recent tour of the build-

ing, McMurtry pointed out several of its problems. The particulate dust he mentions covered every surface in his office.

Room after room contained makeshift water-collection systems to direct water from stained, discolored ceiling tiles through hoses into sinks and trash cans.

Much of the building’s rock lab, which McMurtry says isn’t equipped with proper ventilation for the work done there, was covered in a thick rock dust. In one room, he pointed out a fume hood that didn’t have an exhaust duct to carry away noxious gases.

As bad as the building is, he claims it was much worse before a fire in the spring—before the samples in question were taken—prompted a major cleaning.

McMurtry insisted his science is solid, and that the university’s testing falls short.

“They did microscopic analysis and identified what they could see,” he said, “but they stopped short of doing a chemical analysis and culturing for mold.

“They found pieces of and visible evidence of mold. It’s just common sense that when you find mold you want to look for the metabolites, which are the things that are really bad for you.”

McMurtry is also critical of claims that the building’s ventilation system is adequate, noting that, in several rooms, vents don’t even lead to ducts, and there are no partitions above the ceiling separating many rooms.

McMurtry said he isn’t sure how to proceed, but hopes his report will prompt further action. He said when he sent a copy to Karla Zimmerlee, an executive assistant in Chico State President Paul Zingg’s office, she replied with a claim for workers’ compensation. He has since submitted his report to the Cal/OSHA and CalEPA (the state’s department of Occupational Safety and Health, and its Environmental Protection Agency).

McMurtry, who has spent a great deal of time in the building since starting as a student in 1979 and getting a job there shortly after graduation, said the situation is so troubling he is considering ending his career early.

“I’m one of those guys that loves my job and has barely missed a day of work ever, but it’s to the point that I’m not sure I even want to come to work anymore,” he said. Ω

Grading the foothills

County sues property owners for large-scale soil transfers utte County announced last week that it is B suing the owners of seven properties who are accused of violating county code in

regard to alleged illegal soil-grading operations, most in connection with marijuana gardens in foothill communities above Oroville.

“The illegal grading has damaged the natural beauty of the landscape and threatens to cause slope instability, erosion, and siltation of nearby waterways if the properties are not restored or secured prior to the upcoming rainy season,” reads a Butte County Administration press release dated July 31.

County code calls for the issuance of a permit before any grading work involving more than 50 yards of soil can take place.

The lawsuit asks that each property be deemed a public nuisance and that the owners immediately pull all plants, remove all structures and equipment from the sites, and submit plans to the county Public Works Department to have the property restored to pre-grading conditions. If the property owners do not do the restoration work themselves, the county will do it and charge the property owners for the work done.

Butte County Counsel Bruce Alpert said the grading has increased greatly over the past few years and is scarring the foothills.

“This is not about marijuana cultivation, although unfortunately it appears almost all of them are cultivating marijuana,” Alpert said, responding to criticism by some that the sheriff’s office is using the grading ordinance to stop marijuana cultivation.

“Let’s assume someone put a house up there without a grading permit,” Alpert said.

“We’d go after them. Or someone puts in a greenhouse, [or] someone puts [in] a shed,

[or] a barn. Someone puts a road in and grades all sorts of dirt to get a road to their house—you can’t do that.”

He mentioned the prosecution two years ago of John Bessolo, the owner of a wedding chapel in Butte Creek Canyon who also graded large areas of ground without a permit.

“We not only got orders for him to put it back to the extent he could, but we [also] had our attorney’s fees and costs reimbursed,” Alpert said.

In an interview with the Chico EnterpriseRecord published Aug. 3, brothers Stephen and Matthew Burgess denied having pot gardens on their respective Jordan Hill Road properties. They said they’d been assured by “professional graders” that they wouldn’t need a permit if the grading work disturbed less than 10,000 yards of soil.

Landowner Dan Levine, who ran for state Senate last year and is a self-proclaimed medical-marijuana advocate, also spoke with the E-R. He suggested the lawsuits are a means of discrimination against medicalmarijuana gardeners. There is an online video (go to www.tinyurl.com/levinepot to watch it) of Levine at a conference for the marijuana-legalization group NORML in which he says, “We need to free [cannabis] up for medicine, and for fuel and fiber and everything, and we need to protect our natural resources in California, and Northern California especially.”

There has been reluctance on the

part of state agencies such as the Department of Fish and Wildlife and the Regional Water Quality Control Board (RWQCB) to get involved with enforcing the violation of environmental laws.

“We’re trying to get other agencies involved. But I have to tell you—whether it’s manpower or funds, they just are so reluctant to jump in,” Alpert said. “We just couldn’t keep trying to coordinate any longer. We had to move.”

State Assemblyman Dan Logue (R-Marysville) accompanied Butte County sheriff’s deputies to a couple of the sites on July 24.

“There were whole sides of mountains where they basically cut off all trees and brush, and stacked them around these parcels where they had marijuana growing,” he said. “They cut in culverts, and there is no erosion protection, so you’re going to see a lot of the chemicals that they use flowing into Lake Oroville.”

Logue said he was holding a meeting in his office on Aug. 7 with representatives from Gov. Jerry Brown’s office and the RWQCB, as well as Butte County Sheriff Jerry Smith and County Supervisor Bill Connelly, whose district includes the properties in question.

“We want to find out what steps need to be taken to ensure a secure environment for the water-quality control board,” Logue said. “My big question is where are the environmentalists in this thing? I’m kind of confused.”

For her part, Robyn DiFalco, executive director of Butte Environmental Council, said she is very aware of and concerned about what is going on in the foothills.

“I think this is one of the most alarming and egregious environmental violations taking place,” she said. “It impacts the water, the soil, vegetation, habitat and human health. Our drinking water is being polluted with fertilizer and pesticides.”

DiFalco said she has spoken with county staff to find out what can be done.

“We have been concerned about whether or not it is safe for code-enforcement officers to go in there and enforce the law,” she said.

“We are pleased to see they are out there issuing citations and seeking legal actions.”

City Council meetings are Ctheyhico often more interesting when go off script, and Tuesday’s

(Aug. 6) was no exception, beginning with Mary Goloff’s surprising opening announcement that she was stepping down as mayor.

Struggling to hold back tears, she told a stunned overflow audience that she had “a health condition” that would require her often to be out of the area for testing and other treatments and unable to handle the mayor’s busy schedule. She said she’d made the decision “with a very heavy heart because I’ve really, truly enjoyed this honor and the challenge of serving as mayor,” but she needed to “put [her] family and health first.” She intends to remain on the council.

The council then voted unanimously (two-thirds approval was required) to put the choice of her replacement on that meeting’s agenda. Goloff moved to make Vice Mayor Scott Gruendl mayor, but Councilman Sean Morgan made a pitch for Councilman Mark Sorensen, saying it was he who exposed the “neglect, bad management and some cover-up” of city finances under the previous administration but had been mocked for his efforts.

Morgan was the lone council member to vote no on Gruendl’s nomination. He then nominated Sorensen to be vice mayor, a step that garnered unanimous approval.

The council then took a break to rearrange the dais, returning with Gruendl sitting in the mayor’s chair, Sorensen in the vice mayor’s chair, and Goloff in Sorensen’s former seat.

The first agenda item, a city budget update, is covered in Tom Gascoyne’s report (see “Righting the ship,” page 11). It was notable for the contingent of city workers, all dressed in red T-shirts, who showed up to protest the recent layoffs and what they saw as a trend toward outsourcing of city services while top city officials are enjoying unprecedented salaries.

One of them was Jim Nebel, an equipment mechanic and “proud city worker.” By laying off workers, he told the council, the city was making its employees the “scapegoat” for its financial problems, while City Manager Brian Nakamura was making $217,000 annually, more than the governor.

“It’s up to you, the City Council, to take back the raises at the top,” he insisted.

Others questioned why the city needed an assistant city manager, at a salary of $180,000 annually.

One speaker, Sherri Quammen, noted that Nakamura has “a history of privatization—love ’em, privatize ’em and then leave ’em. … I don’t want a private company taking care of the park. We need to keep the power in people’s hands.”

Many in the crowd applauded.

Later, two recently laid-off workers, Mary Fitch and Alicia Meyer, used the “business from the floor” segment to criticize Nakamura further, charging him with lying to the council and manipulating the media and staff (Fitch) and parachuting into town and privatizing city services without understanding the community (Meyer).

Whether this is just a temporary response to the changes at City Hall or a rebellion in the making remains to be seen. Nakamura continues to have the strong backing of the council members, with the exception of Ann Schwab.

Because the budget discus-

sion went long, Gruendl moved several agenda items to the council’s Aug. 20 meeting. The council did have time, however, to acknowledge a shift in position by Police Chief Kirk Trostle.

Realizing, apparently, that the Mangrove Mini Mart and the Winchester Goose craft-beer bar had been sandbagged earlier when he blocked their ABC licenses, and responding to a public outcry, Trostle had reversed his position and agreed to support the businesses.

The chief explained that he’d changed his mind to give the council time to come up with a comprehensive policy regarding alcohol licenses.

Trostle also has come under fire for his long list of possible ordinances designed to control alcohol consumption in Chico. Morgan defended the chief, saying he was just trying to give the council lots of choices. Or, as Trostle himself put it, “It’s not my place to censor the options.”

Rob Rasner, owner of the Winchester Goose, which is going into the spot at 800 Broadway formerly occupied by Bustolini’s Deli & Coffee House, praised Trostle for his collaboration and “willingness to listen.” And Steve Schuman, who lives in the nearby Barber neighborhood, said the restaurant would be great for folks in the area who wanted a close-by place to grab a beer or a bite to eat.

Council adopts new policies to try to fix budget hearing an invocation delivered by an Aautofter insurance salesman, a tribute to a local body shop, and the mayor’s emotional

resignation (see “Musical chairs,” page 10), the Chico City Council unanimously adopted three budget policies Tuesday (Aug. 6) that will alter the city’s process of making decisions regarding revenue and spending.

In front of a packed house that included a couple dozen city employees wearing red T-shirts and harboring concerns about job stability and union contracts, the council voted to approve budget policies for the 2013-14 fiscal year, hire a consultant to look into generating temporary cash flow—called a tax revenue anticipation note—to help cover city costs between November and next April, and hire two police officers and retain two community-service officers who were slated for layoffs.

The new team of managers— Administrative Services Director Chris Constantin, City Manager Brian Nakamura and Assistant City Manager Mark Orme—has dramatically changed the structure of city government, reducing departments from 11 to five, laying off employees, and telling the council the city is broke after years of spending money like the proverbial drunken sailor.

The dramatic alterations have drawn the ire of both city employees and the general public, suspicious of their true motives and devotion to Chico, and their concerns were voiced throughout the meeting.

The first budget-related item of the evening was actually adopted during consideration of the consent agenda—those items, as the council agenda states, “considered routine and [usually] enacted by one motion.” In this case, the council pulled, considered and approved a motion to hire a consultant to look into creating a franchise agreement with the city’s two waste haulers—Waste Management Inc. and Recology.

Currently, the city of Chico has what is called a “fee agreement,” which generates $160,000 annually in revenue for the city. A franchise agreement could increase that revenue to as much as $1.5 million or more, said Nakamura. It would also set up specific routes for the two companies to lessen the number of repeat trips the heavy garbage trucks travel on the city’s streets.

“Most cities do have franchise agreements with their haulers, and it is more and more common,” Nakamura said.

But some members of the public questioned the move, noting Nakamura had dealt with the same consultant—R3 Consulting Group Inc.—when he was working for the city of Hemet.

“Consultants are hired to tell us what we

Nakamura explained that a franchise agreement is needed as a potential source of revenue for a city that may not be able to meet payroll in December.

Local activist Jessica Allen questioned the need for the franchise agreement as well.

“People in Hemet are very unhappy,” she said. “Why would we follow the same path?”

The council then voted unanimously to contract with R3 for $14,500 to explore the possible franchise.

that the city has $3 million less in “spendable” cash than last year, and that the Chico Police Department payroll is 2 percent over where it should be at this time. Meanwhile, the Fire Department payroll is 11 percent over what it should be, in spite of some savings from the reduction of staff at Fire Station 3 at the Chico Municipal Airport.

The two new police officers, who will attend six months of training before hitting the streets, will be paid for in part by cutting 270 hours in current overtime pay, a hit Police Chief Kirk Trostle accepted as part of the city’s economic reality.

“We’ll work with what we get,” he said.

Constantin told the council that budget changes made in June hold staff more accountable to the council and the public.

“This puts you in the driver’s seat as far as where spending actually goes,” he said.

“This isn’t the last time we’ll see policy changes. This is an ongoing project.”

CARS NO LONGER AS COOL?

The automobile may have seen its glory days in the United States, new research from the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute indicates.

Key indicators such as driver’s-license registration, public-transit ridership and vehicle use point to a decline in driving, according to an article at Philly.com, citing a recent paper by research professor Michael Sivak, “Has Motorization in the U.S. Peaked?”

Some of the decline is apparently the result of the recession that started in 2008, but “several important indicators began to decline earlier and may not have been reversed by an improving economy,” the article said. In addition to the effect of economics and environmental issues on the use of cars, Sivak noted that “societal changes that influence the need for vehicles” may also be responsible, especially when it comes to young people.

“Young people are getting driver’s licenses later or not at all,” and many commute to work by bike, bus or train, or simply telecommute, the article noted.

DAMAGE TO THE BEELINE

The tracking of honey bees fitted with tiny radar antennae indicates that exposure to neonicotinoid pesticides is harmful to their navigational skills, new research shows.

Biologists at England’s Rothamsted Research worked with German scientists to glue lightweight radar transponders to the backs of honey bees to track their flight paths, according to the UK’s Telegraph newspaper. Bees that ate syrup containing the pesticides became disoriented and had trouble finding their way back to their hives, instead “flying in random circles rather than straight lines.”

“The treated bees … are more confused,” making them less able to find food and bring it back to the hive, said Randolf Menzel, an insect neurobiologist at Freie Universität Berlin, and leader of the pioneering work.

The findings come as the honey-bee population is declining worldwide.

A reality-show-like spin on ecotourism is taking off in the Los Angeles area, as an increasing number of people are opting to take “toxic tours” by bus through neighborhoods characterized by such things as their polluted brownfields and defunct factories.

S long been known for its commitment to sustainable practices. It boasts, for

instance, one of the biggest privately owned solar arrays in the United States.

And in 2011, a whopping 99.7 percent of the brewery’s solid waste “was diverted from the landfill through creative measures that encourage reuse, recycling or composting of waste,” according to the brewery’s website (see column note). The year prior, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency named Sierra Nevada a Green Business of the Year for its environmental leadership in the brewing industry (see “Sierra Nevada Brewery gets top honor,” The GreenHouse, Dec, 23, 2010).

So, it should come as no surprise that the brewery’s 8-acre hop field fronting E. 20th Street, next to its solar-panel-covered parking lot, is an eco-friendly operation.

“We currently have 8 acres that are certified organic [by] Oregon Tilth,” said Mandi McKay, assistant sustainability coordinator at Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. The field—which was established in 2003 and produces Cascade, Chinook and Citra hops—“is based around the idea of our Estate [Homegrown] Ale, and you can call an ale an estate ale only if you grow your own ingredients,” she said.

“In almost all the processes, operations and general culture here [at the brewery], we definitely lean toward sustainability— we do everything with this environmental philosophy in mind,” McKay added.

For example, she said, a flock of sheep is brought in to the hop field during late winter “to do natural weed-mitigation” prior to any replanting that needs to be done in the spring. Sheep are also used to eat some of the early hop-plant growth, which makes the second growth healthier and more robust. In the fall, the brewery’s agricultural staff—headed up by Agricultural Supervisor Lau Ackerman—plants several cover crops that help make the field’s soil more conducive to hops cultivation.

Drip irrigation, flame-throwers for weed control, fish emulsion for fertilizer (“no chemical fertilizers”)—those are some other eco-friendly techniques employed in the hop field, she said.

The eco-friendliness of the brewery’s hops management goes beyond farming practices, though. Spent hops (which includes other hops not grown on-site) left over from the brewing process go, along with spent barley, to feed the brewery’s herd of cattle at Chico State’s University Farm. “We also share the spent grain and hops with cattle ranches and dairy farms within a 50-mile radius,” McKay said.

Additionally, the hops left over after making certain beers via the “torpedo process” (such as Torpedo Extra IPA)— whereby the brewed beer is “shot through a vessel of dried hops, like making tea,

sort of”—are composted on-site (along with all of the food waste from Sierra Nevada’s restaurant and employee break rooms) in the brewery’s massive HotRot composting machine, the only one of its kind in the United States.

“Once it’s composted, we use all the compost on-site—in the hop field, in the [2-acre organic] restaurant garden, and we also use it in our barley field, which is about a mile and a half from [the brewery],” McKay said. Last year, the garden produced 28,000 pounds of food, which goes directly into the preparation of meals served in the restaurant.

hop field, where row upon row of hop vines twisted clockwise up their 18-footlong strings, Ackerman examined some of the hops cones, which resemble little green pine cones. Some of the cones had already been harvested, it being late July, and plenty more were waiting to be picked.

Ackerman—whose farming credentials include growing up on a farm in Colorado before attending Chico State, where he studied agronomy before going to work as field-crop manager at the University Farm for almost 12 years—took over the brewery’s hop farm in 2009.

“We use a lot of cover crops,” Ackerman said, “usually a mix of annual rye and vetch.” Vetch, he said, fixes nitrogen from the atmosphere, drawing it into the soil and making it available to hop vines, and rye “has a real deep root system to help open up the soil.”

Ackerman plants the cover crops in early fall, so that they do their work all winter long before they are mowed in late spring.

Once the perennial plants pop out of the ground and begin growing in the springtime, “I always start with beneficial-insect release,” said Ackerman. “We have a nice

native population of ladybugs— they will eat the mites. Mites are my biggest headache—weeds and [two-spotted spider] mites.”

“We try to encourage them to stick around,” he said of the ladybugs. Ditto for the bug known as the spider-mite destroyer—Stethorus punctillum—which “looks like a black ladybug.”

As for weed eradication, “We bring the sheep in early on. We have to get them out at least 90 days before harvest, because you can’t have poop in your fields 90 days before harvest,” according to Oregon Tilth certification standards.

Ackerman also employs lawnmowers, weed eaters, the aforementioned flame-weeders and good old hand-pulling of weeds. “[Weeds] are a headache all season long,” Ackerman said. The most troublesome? “Johnson grass. We dug out tens of thousands of rhizomes this year and it’s still back.

This stuff just keeps coming back— so we just keep doing battle.”

The hop vines also benefit from nighttime lighting near the field.

Those on the west side of the field, near the solar parking lot, grow faster than others farther from the lot because of lights that are on throughout the night, Ackerman said. The same goes for plants along the north border of the field, which benefit from the street lights on E. 20th Street.

New to growing hops when he came to work for Sierra Nevada, Ackerman reflected upon his job as hops farmer. “I’d grown dozens of crops, but not hops,” he said.

“It’s a tricky [crop]. And, you know, you grow it, they make beer [with it], and you were a part of it—and that’s pretty cool.” Ω

UNCOMMON SENSE Staying green on the greens While the existence of golf courses and their expanses of heavily watered lawns that sometimes contain invasive grasses may be a topic for separate debate, there are ways for golfers to soften their personal impact.

Choose the right course: Patronize environmentally friendly courses. Make suggestions to management if they don’t already use electric instead of gas carts, provide regular recycling bins, or follow other green practices.

Walk: Pass on the cart altogether and hoof it.

Recyclable products: There is a wide range available if you look, like biodegradable tees, and rawhide rather than plastic balls.

SUSTAIN FRIENDSHIP, SUSTAIN THE POST OFFICE (AND SUSTAIN THE SKILL OF HANDWRITING) Those who know me well know that I am an avid

letter writer. I love sitting quietly in the evening writing a letter or postcard to a friend or family member, even if—as is occasionally the case—that person lives no farther than the other side of Chico. I derive similar pleasure from receiving handwritten correspondence in the mail.

Fittingly, my friend Tom S.—a former Chicoan living in Eugene, Ore., who corresponds with me regularly—recently mailed me an article clipped from The Oregonian newspaper titled “The postcard’s stormy birth.” It details the history of the “open-post sheet,” as the postcard was first termed in 1865 when German postal official Heinrich von Stephan proposed it. His idea was rejected, however, as being “too radical”: “Who would forgo their privacy, even for the sake of convenience and frugality?”

In 1869, a similar proposal was accepted by the Austrian post office, and “[t]hree million postcards passed through the Austrian post office within the first three months.” It wasn’t long before the postcard took off worldwide as a revolutionary, inexpensive means of communication.

Fast forward to today: The postcard remains a relatively cheap way to communicate (a domestic postcard stamp is 33 cents; international, $1.10), but has been pushed to the tumbleweed-filled sidelines of communication methods thanks to such Internet “equivalents” (Christine does not agree, hence the quotation marks) as Twitter and Instagram.

“We need to create a campaign to bring back the postcard,” wrote Tom. “How about writing something DESIGNER in the N&R about postcard penJEN_PU pals?” ’Nuff said, my friend.

I offer that the postcard is a wonderful, not-too-complicated way for one to not only communicate with pals (with the unique intimacy that comes from writing with one’s own hand, and perhaps a favorite pen), but also to be creative and eco-friendly at the same time.

Pieces of cardboard from the backs of used-up notepads, for instance, It’s fun to write postcards! make great canvases on which to create magnificent, one-of-a-kind postcards. Used postcards also work well—just glue a piece of paper on the back and reuse; local antique shops are loaded with boxes of old postcards, some of them very cool-looking. Speaking of antique stores, there’s a vendor at Eighth & Main Antique Center that sells old black-and-white photographs that are perfect for gluing onto cardboard or card stock for this purpose.

Bird in Hand (320 Broadway) has a nice selection of brand-new postcards, including a number of Chico-centric ones.

The Oregonian article mentioned a female friend of the author who “recently found out that her 25-year-old brother had never received a postcard in his life. … [She] seemed to imply that no one cared enough to take the trouble to buy a simple postcard and stamp, write a few lines and mail it to him. She decided to be the first.

“Perhaps we have it backward,” the article continued. “We seek communication that is easy and effortless [such as what takes place via the Internet], and think that will foster genuine communication. But what truly matters is the trouble we take.”

If you, GreenHouse reader, do not know the pleasure of writing a postcard, take the “trouble” to make one (or buy one) and send it to someone.

ENLOE GETS NATIONAL NOD

Dawn McDonald of Chico Home Brew Shop believes that when done sensibly, drinking beer is a relaxing and fulfilling experience.

Enloe Medical Center was listed by Consumer Reports as being among the top 10 hospitals in the nation for its overall surgery-success rating.

The magazine’s report, titled “Your safer-surgery survival guide,” rated more than 2,400 hospitals across the nation, according to an Enloe press release. The top-10 list—which included one other California hospital, Scripps Green Hospital in La Jolla—was compiled by identifying hospitals that scored highest in overall surgery rating, then narrowed down to those facilities that regularly perform at least 10 kinds of surgeries and received high ratings in at least 30 percent of those (without earning a low rating for any surgery), according to ConsumerReports.org.

In the report, Dr. Marcia Nelson, Enloe’s vice president of medical affairs, pointed to the hospital’s annual quality summit as a key part of its success.

GLUTEN-FREE LABELS STANDARDIZED

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration recently set standards for the labeling of gluten-free food products.

Congress passed a law in 2004 that tasked the FDA with setting a limit on how much gluten is allowable in food labeled gluten-free, a guideline intended to protect consumers with the autoimmune disorder celiac disease, according to The New York Times.

The FDA has settled on a gluten limit of 20 parts per million, a level first proposed in 2007 that many food companies have long been using as a guide before the new rule was set. The need for a standard has increased dramatically in recent years, as U.S. consumers bought $4.2 billion in gluten-free foods in 2012—nearly three times that of sales in 2008.

BIO-CLOCK RESET BY CAMPING?

Artificial sources of light from phones, computers and TVs could throw off the body’s natural sleep cycle, research finds.

For the study, published online in Current Biology, researchers from the University of Colorado Boulder recruited eight healthy adults who stuck to their regular daily routine for a week, then spent the next week camping, according to MedlinePlus. With only the sun and campfires providing light, the participants became more in-sync with the natural world.

In measuring melatonin levels at the end of each week, the campers’ “biological night”— when melatonin levels begin to rise in the evening to help the body sleep—kicked in about two hours earlier than when they were at home, and the campers’ melatonin levels dropped off about an hour before they woke.

Past studies have found that in artificially lit environments, people’s melatonin levels don’t drop until about two hours after they wake up, leading to morning grogginess.

It’s mostly a matter of taste, but McDonald acknowledges that enjoying a beer at the end of a busy day is a reasonable way to unwind and release stress. And though she agrees the same relaxing effect could be achieved by drinking wine or spirits, she said that sipping a full-bodied beer in the evening leaves her “not just relaxed, but fulfilled.”

“You don’t have to drink craft beer to release stress,” McDonald said. “I guess a shot of vodka could accomplish that, too.

But for me, a shot of vodka, versus 12 ounces of home brew, is a vastly different experience. I’m not getting much of anything from that vodka; in fact, I might potentially be courting a headache.”

McDonald emphasized that she’s not a nutritional expert, but she concedes there may be truth in the mounting evidence that drinking a small amount of beer or wine on a regular basis has a host of health benefits that go beyond simple relaxation.

A handful of studies have suggested that moderate consumption of beer may boost HDL cholesterol (the good kind that keeps arteries clean), prevent diabetes, increase bone density (due to silicon content), support brain health, help prevent some forms of cancer, reduce inflammation, and even make losing weight less difficult.

In fact, a University of Washington

study released in January determined the precise configuration of humulone molecules—a substance produced by hops during the brewing process—as a first step toward isolating the compound and researching its potential uses as an ingredient in pharmaceutical drugs.

Another study conducted by Spanish researchers, titled “Wine, Beer, Alcohol and Polyphenols on Cardiovascular Disease and Cancer,” concluded that “sufficient evidence supports a significant inverse association between regular and moderate wine consumption and vascular risk, particularly red wine, and a similar relationship is reported for beer consumption.”

The study also suggested that “any health[ful] effects of wine and beer are greater in combination with a health[ful] diet,” pointing to the widely touted Mediterranean diet—which combines moderate alcohol consumption with fruits, vegetables and whole grains—as evidence that compounds in wine and beer “have synergistic effects with compounds found in other food groups.”

Even so, while plenty has been written about the positive health effects of regularly drinking wine, there simply aren’t as many scientifically sound studies specific to beer, said Stephanie Bianco-Simeral, assistant director of Chico State’s Center for Nutrition and Activity Promotion (CNAP).

But as someone who extensively researched the health benefits of wine as a student of nutritional biochemistry at UC Davis, and Texas A&M—particularly the role of antioxidants (found in wine) in combating free radicals, which can damage the body’s cells and lead to disease and premature aging—Bianco-Simeral is skeptical of results from lab studies aimed at understanding how an isolated compound in beer or wine affects the body.

“When you do that kind of research, you’re looking at the capacity of a compound to do something, or how much of a compound is in something,” she said. “It’s not telling you whether it’s digested,

Bianco-Simeral also takes epidemiological studies that look at the general health of a large population with a grain of salt.

“Take the ‘French paradox,’ for instance,” she said of the widelyheld observation that France’s population has a relatively low rate of coronary heart disease despite a diet high in saturated fats. “You’ve got this high consumption of cheese and butter, but you also have nuts and a fiber-rich diet, and different levels of activity.

“Yes, they’re also consuming more alcohol, but can you say they have less heart disease because of the alcohol?”

For Bianco-Simeral, that widely accepted rule of thumb serves to illustrate how easy it is to drink beyond what is considered a healthful amount of alcohol. She noted that going out for a drink usually entails having more than one, and since a pint is 16 ounces, the 24-ounce limit for men is exceeded by drinking two pints of beer.

McDonald suggested people tend to “overindulge in a lot of different things” despite being aware of the potential negative consequences.

“It’s the same thing with food,” she said. “It may be something good for you, but if you start stuffing it down every day in vast quantities, you could end up with some sort of toxicity.”

For her part, Bianco-Simeral believes the health benefits of any form of alcohol have been overblown.

“I think, in all honesty, people want to hear that wine and beer is nutritious, so it’s another reason to consume it.” Ω

For more than 30 years, Chico has been on the front lines of the craft-beer revolution

I

f you went into Chico’s BevMo! with the intention of picking up a case of Bud or Coors Light, you would have to go to the back corner of the store, beyond the aisle overstuffed on both sides with American craft beers, past another two rows of imports from Belgium, Germany, etc., all the way to a small section of shelves next to the storeroom door stocked with four, maybe five choices from the two mega-beer-corporations, Anheuser-Busch InBev and MillerCoors.

This is probably not where you expected a story about the craft-beer revolution to start, in the aisles of the newly opened local branch of the alcohol-supermarket chain, especially in the city where the Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. was born, and where the sweet, bready aroma of beer being made vents from its giant brewing vessels and fills our air, permeating so many Chicoans’ lives.

But if this revolution has been a war between the artisan breweries of the craft-beer movement and the corporations behind the big-name domestic beers that have long dominated the American beer landscape, then it’s on the shelves of BevMo! where we see that—when it comes to the battle for shelf space—the tide may be turning. The beer section of the big-box store is almost entirely made up of craft beers: hundreds of choices.

Here, craft beer is winning, handily.

Thanks to Sierra Nevada, Chico has enjoyed a spot on the frontlines for every battle of the craft-beer revolution, which today is providing more delicious spoils than ever.

ACCORDING TO A JUST-RELEASED REPORT BY the Brewers Association, craft-beer dollar sales for the first half of 2013 are up 15 percent (with sales-by-volume up 13 percent).

Craft breweries sold 7.3 million barrels of beer (one barrel is the equivalent of 31 gal-

lons, or two kegs) in the first six months of this year, compared to 6.4 million during the same time last year.

Craft beer now makes up 6.5 percent of U.S. beer sales by volume (10.2 percent by dollars), with an estimated 13.2 million barrels having been sold in 2012. That’s a growth of more than 46 percent since 2006, when 7.1 million barrels were sold. Sales for the big domestic, non-craft brands have remained relatively flat, with 2012 numbers being nearly identical to those in 2008.

And nearly one million (966,000) of the craft-beer barrels in 2012 came out of the Sierra Nevada brewery here in Chico. That’s quite a jump in production compared to the less than 1,000 barrels brewed during the first year after Grossman and co-founder Paul Camusi opened the brewery in November of 1980, in a little blue warehouse in south Chico.

“Nineteen-eighty to ’82 there were six brewers producing sort of more robust, more flavorful beers, and none of us, I think, could have predicted where it would’ve gone,” Grossman said in recent interview at the offices of the Chico brewery.

Where it’s gone for Sierra Nevada is pretty

much everywhere. The business is the seventh-highest-selling brewery overall in America, and the No. 2 American craft brewer behind only Boston Beer Co., makers of Samuel Adams (and which, unlike Sierra Nevada, has a national television-advertising campaign).

The brewery’s output has increased so steadily in the last 25 years—maxing out at 13,000 barrels at the original location in 1987 before opening the current brewery in 1989; hitting 100,000 in 1993; building a second brew house on site in 1997; and creeping toward its current one-million-barrel capacity in 2012—that Grossman is building another brewery outside of Asheville, N.C., to meet the demands of the growing East Coast and European markets for his beer. The East Coast location—with an initial capacity of 300,000 barrels (and room to grow to 700,000)—will start brewing its first batches before the end of the year.

more choices and for quality ingredients has aligned perfectly with the craft-beer-makers’ philosophy. It’s worth noting that the 6.5 percent share of the market that craft beer enjoys in America is an overall number, and that in progressive foodie hotbeds like the Bay Area, Portland, Ore., and Seattle, Wash., craft brews hold a solid share of the market. “[It’s] 20 to 30 percent of what’s on the shelf in some markets,” Grossman said, adding that Chico falls in that range as well.

brewery (while also completing an autobiography of his beer journey—Beyond the Pale—to be released Aug. 26). He seemed remarkably refreshed and energized as he took a break to talk about the revolution he helped start.

“It wasn’t like it is today, where everybody has heard what craft beer is,” Grossman said about those early days when he and his fellow pioneers—such as Fritz Maytag, owner of San Francisco’s Anchor Brewing Co., and the pioneering Jack McAuliffe, who opened the short-lived New Albion Brewing Co. in Sonoma in 1976—were trying to break into a market that had no space for them. “Back in those

days, the market share was less than 1 percent and the amount of shelf space and the focus of a distributor or retailer was almost non-existent. … We had to educate the distributor, the retailer and the consumer.”

An early turning point for Grossman and the craft-beer movement was a 1982 article published in the San Francisco Examiner praising Sierra Nevada’s beers, which in turn led to pioneering chef Alice Waters including the brewery’s flagship Pale Ale on her menu at her Chez Panisse restaurant in Berkeley. “[That was a] big shot in the arm. We weren’t advertising. We still really don’t advertise. But getting articles like that written about us certainly helped a lot,” Grossman said.

In many ways, the growing foodie culture of which Chez Panisse was at the forefront, has gone hand in hand with the craft-beer renaissance. American tastes have been changing, and the desire for

CRAFT BEER HAS BEEN MAKING INROADS INTO Chico for years, thanks to the longtime influence of Sierra Nevada and the city’s proximity to the great beer-making regions of Northern California and Oregon. Most of the choices at BevMo! have long been available at several local liquor and grocery stores (see “999 bottles of beer on the shelves,” page 25) that have increasingly opened large amounts of shelf space to craft choices over the past decade. And, more recently, a host of beer-centric bars and restaurants—The Banshee, Burgers & Brew, The Pour House, The Handle Bar (see Chow, p. 30), Feather Falls Casino Brewing Co., and the soon-to-open Winchester Goose (see Newslines, page 10)—have inched Chico closer to being a “craft-beer town,” instead of simply a “Sierra Nevada town.”

“The competition isn’t between me and Sierra [Nevada], or me and Western [Pacific Brewing & Dining in Oroville], or me and Sutter Buttes Brewing. It’s us against Bud, Coors, Miller, PBR,” said Roland Allen, of Feather Falls Casino Brewing Co. in Oroville.

Despite his playfully combative stance against the beer industry’s big boys, Allen is a very friendly guy. The 53-year-old head brewer at Feather Falls happily talked about his experience in Chico’s craft-brew history as he dragged hoses around the brew house inside Feather Falls Casino on a recent summer afternoon.

Allen has been making beer in the Chico area nearly as long as Grossman, getting his homebrew feet wet in 1983, thanks to the Home Brew Shop that Grossman used to own. From there, Allen would go on to work as an assistant brewmaster at Sierra Nevada for nine years, before teaming up with Tom Atmore and Bill Beeghly in 1995 to start up Butte Creek Brewing Co. While Allen said he’s proud of the beers he made with Butte Creek—including his signature Roland’s Red and some of the first organic beers in the country—and that he had a lot of fun along the way, “it was just a constant battle” to get his beer on shelves and into bars in those early days. “I’m more about making the beer. But when it’s your brewery, you’re kind of involved in all facets.” In 2005, they sold Butte Creek, and the brewery eventually moved operations to Mendocino.

Allen says he’s happy to be able to worry just about the brewing these days, and after three years in operation, the Feather Falls brewery is doing so well that it’ll soon be adding a couple more tanks to keep up with demand. The casino also sells Bud and Coors products, but Allen says despite that, nearly half of all beer sold at the casino is their craft beer.

“The bottom line is, craft beer has just got so much flavor, and once you start drinking craft beer it’s a tough gig to go back,” he said.

While craft brew has brought choice—and a lot of it—back to the consumer, time will tell how many more brews will be able to fit into the marketplace. There were roughly 100 breweries in America when Sierra Nevada opened in 1980.

That number has skyrocketed to 2,538 as of June of this year, an increase of 446 in the last 12 months alone. And there are many more on the horizon, with 1,605 new breweries currently in planning.

“The rate of new-brewery openings can’t go on forever. There’s going to be a limited amount of shelf space eventually, and so I think that will slow down,” said Sierra Nevada’s Grossman before adding, “But is craft beer going to be a flash in the pan? No, it’s here for good.” Ω

Miles Jordan has been writing jazz and blues reviews for the Chico News & Review since 1981, nearly as long as he’s been appreciating the offerings of the Sierra Nevada Brewing Co., having been visiting the brewery since its inception in 1980.

Jordan and his fellow regulars— the unofficial Citizens Advisory Board—have had an intimate vantage point from which to witness the growth of Sierra Nevada. We asked him to introduce us to the group that’s shared in the brewery’s local history.

I

t sure is funny how things get started. Take, for example, the Citizens Advisory Board—or C.A.B. It now numbers about 30 or so beer lovers who congregate in the Sierra Nevada Brewery’s pub every Thursday afternoon to sample new beers, savor proven favorites and engage in the sort of good-natured chaffing that comes from long association. It is, of course, an enormous conceit. Imagine the possibility of anyone not working at the brewery having any sort of input into their brewing processes. Of course, we can suggest that they brew a certain style of beer and—as regards their sensationally popular Pale Bock which has been MIA for several years—have repeatedly done so with minimal to zero effect.

It all started more than 30 years ago, when the brewery was housed in a pair of metal buildings on Gilman Way (now South Whitman Place), about a mile south of its current location on East 20th Street. Jack Peters—my good friend, co-worker and C.A.B. co-founder—and I used to drop into the facility on our fortnightly paydays in order to buy a case of “handcaps,” those bottles that are first off the line while the fill levels are being adjusted, and were sold at half-price.

and bags of pistachios. So, until the new brewery was built and the adjacent Taproom was opened in October 1989, Jack and I were the sole members of the C.A.B. In fact, we make the entirely facetious claim that Sierra Nevada co-founder/ owner Ken Grossman got the idea of opening the pub after noticing how Jack and I attacked the kegerator.

“Ken,” we falsely affirm, “figured out that if he put a cash register between us and the beer taps, he could make even more money.”

Once the Taproom opened, a steadily growing throng of beer lovers began assembling on Thursdays, and a few years ago Grossman and Steve Dresler, his brewmaster, chose that day on which to put a cask-conditioned ale on line.

Dresler recalled how this came to pass: “When we first got involved in firkins [small casks] and I wanted to increase beer variety in the pub, I immediately decided on Thursday, as that was our historic C.A.B. night. These folks have been coming on Thursday longer than many can remember. It just sort of evolved over time from the early days on Gilman Way. “I don’t go over to the pub often after work, but the one night I almost always do is Thursday, because [the] tradition is a special part of the brewery’s history.”

NOW, OF COURSE, THE PUB IS SO popular that it’s difficult to tell the C.A.B. group—which includes at least three father-son pairs and one husband-wife duo—from the rest of the revelers crowding the bar. Even more packed are the times when Sierra Nevada beer campers and/or the brewery’s sales reps are celebrating beer-thirty. It’s also a source of delight for some of us C.A.B.-ers who have met beer lovers from around the world and to whom we provide a link to the brewery’s past.

A hallmark of a C.A.B.-er is having one’s own mug kept on display behind the bar. Mary Barrow, a favorite bartender, has been serving us in the pub for many years. I asked for her view of this Thursday phenomenon and she replied, “I think the way the general public views the C.A.B. is pretty impressive. They see this big group … with their giant mugs. They always ask, ‘How do I get one of those?’”

Perhaps the most epic C.A.B. event occurred four years ago, when nine of us were invited to participate in one of the brewery’s Beer Camps.

We were the first non-industry group to be special guests of the brewery and create a beer. We made a red ale which, given our C.A.B. roots (pronouncing the acronym as a word helps establish the connection), we called Red Taxi Ale. It was a highlight of the C.A.B.’s history at the brewery. Even Grossman was impressed—he wrote: “I think it was great that we had this … opportunity to say thanks to the C.A.B. for all the years of support, critical comment and educational feedback.” Ω more BEER continued on page 25

ather than throw in the towel after a fire in an adjoining motorcycle shop heavily damaged Spike’s Bottle Shop in March of 2012, the store’s owner saw the opportunity to reinvent the store, and fill a much-needed hole in the Butte County beer market.

“As we prepared for reopening, we looked at the fact that Chico didn’t really have a specialty beer store, and there’s a big calling for it,” said Kevin Jaradah, Spike’s

proprietor. “So we decided we were going to be that store.”

Jaradah and crew restarted from the ground up, having the company doing the repairs and remodeling install the largest beer locker possible for the space: 23 doors’ worth.

In addition, he had 32 feet of fourtiered shelves installed for nonrefrigerated beer.

Upon reopening in December 2012, Spike’s—located at 1270 E. First Ave.— had an estimated 700

craft beers from around the world, with half in the cold cases ready for consumption and the rest at room temperature for connoisseurs to enjoy at their leisure.

Today the number has grown to nearly 900, which Jaradah claims is the largest selection in Butte County (although newly opened big-box store BevMo! is probably giving him a run for his money). He said five to 10 new beers come in during the average week.

“There are customers who come every single Friday to see what new beers came in,” he said.

“Some spend about 45 minutes to an hour just browsing through and studying every single beer before they pick something out.”

While there isn’t a dedicated beer store in Chico, many local liquor stores and markets have responded to the increased demand by opening more of their shelves to American and imported craft beers.

There are now several Chico shops—Ray’s Liquor, Star Liquors, Finnegan’s Jug, Mangrove Bottle Shop, S&S Produce and the Chico Natural Foods Cooperative, not to mention BevMo!, Cost Plus World Market, Trader Joe’s and many other area supermarkets—boasting impressive selections.

Jaradah says that his store’s ever-changing roster of brews requires constant management, and he works closely with Jody Cornilsen, category and craft-brand manager at Chico’s DBI Beverage Inc., to see what’s available or to help him wrangle the brands he’s interested in. Non-sellers are sometimes abandoned, and Jaradah does as much research as possible, referencing websites like RateBeer and talking to beer lovers. When customers make requests, he does what he can to secure the brands they want.

The best part of Jaradah’s research, he said, is taking home a bottle of each incoming brew to taste test at home. He takes notes on each in order to be able to give recommendations and better serve his beer-obsessed patrons.

“Kevin is really good at keeping his selection fresh and cutting edge,” Cornilsen said.

When asked what some of his most popular brands are, Jaradah explained that sales follow definite trends based not so much on specific brands as types of beer. He noted sour beers, India pale ales and Belgian white beers are particularly popular right now, and has been somewhat focused on beefing up his sour-beer collection.

Unsurprisingly for Chico, Jaradah sells more Sierra Nevada than anything else. And he said one of the most fervently requested brews is Pliny the Elder, Russian River Brewing Company’s awardwinning double IPA. He stocks it as often as possible, but the beer is so in demand everywhere that supplies are always limited.

Jaradah said Monk’s Café Flemish Sour Ale and the Belgian IPA Piraat (with 10.5 percent alcohol by volume) partly top the list of current personal and customer favorites. His go-to six-packs of the moment are the White Ale and Toasted Porter from Icelandic brewer Einstök.

“They have the best water in the world there, and you can taste it in the beer,” he said of Einstök. The brewery is located 60 miles south of the Arctic Circle and uses water that runs down through prehistoric glaciers and ancient lava fields.

Jaradah’s priciest single beer is Belgian import Deus Brut des Flandres, a “Bière de Champagne” made by Brouwerij Bosteels, and available in a 750 milliliter bottle for $40 at Spike’s.

All told, Jaradah remains happy with the decision to change the store’s focus, and is dedicated to bringing the finest and most sought-after beers to Chico. The shelves are stocked to capacity, but he’s not stopping—he recently ordered more shelves—as he shoots for 1,000 varieties, and beyond. Ω

Sixty-One India pale ale (with syrah grape must)

Dogfish Head Brewery You know something isn’t normal about this IPA the second it pours from the glass—because it’s pink. Indeed, the SixtyOne India pale ale is a beer-wine hybrid—a blend of Dogfish Head’s popular 60 Minute IPA and California syrah grape must. The idea for the beer supposedly came about several years ago after the Delaware, Md. brewery’s founder, Sam Calagione, served a few friends pints of fresh, draft IPA spiked with a splash of red wine. The malty, bitter and fruity cocktail made an impression on the group, and Calagione—who is widely known for conducting some of the most bizarre experiments in craft brewing—decided eventually to hone the recipe and make this blend a core beer. First released this March, Sixty-One will now be available all year. It does the job of any well-built IPA: nice and foamy, on top of a solid foundation of robust malt and bitter, fragrant hops. It is more complex than a mere beer, though. It is winey, brisk and tart, with acidic fruit notes not usually found in the world of hops and malt. But this is the world of Dogfish Head, where anything can happen.

Portland, Ore. A rather unassuming presence in the craft-beer mecca of Portland, Ore., Gigantic Brewing Company makes its home in a small warehouse among metal fabricators and powder-coating shops in the deep southeast part of the city. But the beer this small operation cranks out is bold and delicious as its name implies. Ben Love and Van Havig—both of whom have worked at some of Portland’s best breweries—started this operation in May of 2012, bringing with them a little punk rock ’tude. In a short amount of time, Gigantic has emerged as one of the better breweries in Portland, packing decent-sized crowds into its cozy taproom on any given day. And they’re beginning to make a name for themselves outside Oregon as well, shipping their brews throughout the Pacific Northwest, and soon to California. The Gigantic IPA is absolutely terrific—hoppy, but not overpowering, with a clean finish that makes ordering a second round a no-brainer. Gigantic also does a handful of seasonal ales, including a black saison called The City Never Sleeps, and The Royale, a lighter Belgian-style pale ale. Adding to the experience are the fun labels, which are done by a range of artists known for their album-cover artwork and animation.

Ovila Abbey Saison Belgian-style farmhouse ale Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. Sierra Nevada’s Ovila series of Belgian-style ales (which include dubbel, quad, golden/strong ale and saison styles) are both a collaboration with the Abbey of New Clairvaux monastery in Vina (which receives a portion of the proceeds from the beer) and a chance for the pioneering brewery to experiment with the styles of beers that Belgian monks have been creating for centuries. Like many of the trappist and abbey beers (those brewed at monasteries, or in the style of monastic brews, respectively) the saisons (or farmhouse ales) were often augmented with spices and fruits; for the current Ovila Abbey Saison four-pack, Sierra Nevada has goosed the saison with peppercorns as well as locally sourced mandarin oranges, including some harvested by the monks in their Vina orchards. Poured into a Belgian goblet, the copper-colored and verycarbonated brew has a sparkling-wine-like mouthfeel. The combination of the blast of carbonation with the spiciness of peppercorns and tang from the mandarins provides a satisfying bite at initial taste, followed by a wonderful balance of fruitiness and musky Belgian yeast. With so much going on, it’s surprising how refreshingly clean it finishes, and it’s only the 7.5 percent alcohol content that keeps me from quaffing with too much gusto.

Oakland’s The Loyd Family Players, GRUB Co-op a similarly configured troupe that 1525 Dayton Road Wofchuck (pronounced “Woofchuck”) founded before leaving the band to concentrate on his Chico endeavors which, in addition to his musical pursuits, includes tending to bees for the apiarist’s Wofchuck Honey Co. The Wolf Thump crew just finished recording their first CD, For the Love of the Groove, at Origami Recording Lounge. In anticipation of his troupe’s CDrelease party (Aug. 16, at the GRUB Cooperative), Wofchuck answered a few questions about the new album (“It’s high energy. Someone can clean their house to this music in a very fast fashion.”) and the art of drumming. (For more with Wofchuck, see Arts DEVO, page 31.)

CN&R: Can you tell me a little about your drumming education?

Wofchuck: It was mostly just studying with great teachers—Lansana Kouyate [and] Sidiki Diallo were some big influences on me. Also, I studied a bunch of tabla. I went to India and studied there, and also I went to the Ali Akbar College [Indian classical music school in Marin] and studied there for a bit. But I think, also, I just listen. You listen to a Fela [Kuti]

album, Tower of Power, you know, Nickel Creek, [and] you can learn something. I’m always listening to what’s going on in an ensemble, so it’s like a constant study for me.

What is it about a group of drummers that gets people so engaged?

It’s just very simple. It goes right toward that feeling that you want for dancing. It’s this thing that’s been around forever where people are hitting drums and people are dancing. There’s a relationship there.

[There’s not] a lot of: “What are they saying?” Or, “What’s the message of this song?” Or, “What [are] the chord changes?”

There’s an idea that your mind isn’t the main perceiver of that music; it’s more of a feeling, so it really hits you in the heart. I think that people really look for that. They want a release.

How’s that look from your side—seeing the crowd start to move?

Well, that’s what it’s all about. That’s where the energy comes from. We just set up, and that’s what we’re looking for. So, when we’re met, then the drums can really do what they want to do. If you don’t have that relationship and that engagement, it’s definitely harder to get the energy up as a performer. But when you’re received and people start dancing, it’s just like a good game of tennis: It’s just back and forth.

That’s the beautiful thing about African music that I learned when I was studying West African drumming—that relationship between the drum and the dance. When you watch these masters—I was so blessed to see so many djembe players and master dancers just play off each and follow each other and get that vibe—it’s so beautiful.

Were you worried about losing some of the live energy being in a studio?

No. I didn’t want to try to recreate what we do in a live performance, which is a lot more improvisation, a lot more engaging in the dance and letting the vibe happen. This was more like, “We have these drum arrangements—let’s view them more as songs.”

We put a lot of energy into getting the songs right and knowing the music. So, when you’ve got that already, all you’ve got to do is flip the switch and just let it happen. It’s such a good crew that we were able to really just get our mojo going together and deliver that. And I think that the studio is just a make-or-break kind of situation, and I love that. I love that feeling of, “It’s on now!” Ω August 8, 2013

The Handle Bar—located on the Jordan north side of E. 20th Street across from Best Buy—is the new kid on the block and joins the growing list of local emporia serving domestic and foreign craft beers on draft that includes The Banshee, Burgers and Brew, The Pour House and The Graduate (and, perhaps soon, the promising-looking Winchester Goose).

During a recent visit to the 20-tap pub, owners Brian Kanabrocki and Carolyn Cleland explained their motivation for opening. Kanabrocki was working for a beer distributor and had developed connections with a lot of craft breweries, and Cleland, his fiancée, works in the office at Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. in Chico.

“We were both constantly surrounded by craft beer,” Cleland said, “and so we visited other beer bars and realized that there was nothing in Chico that catered to the demographic that we wanted to.”

Once they settled on the location (in a space that had been a Quiznos sandwich shop), Carolyn said “a lot of people that cared about us thought we were crazy, that we wouldn’t be able to survive if we weren’t downtown.

They thought the idea was great, ★★★★ but nothing has succeeded there.

But we felt it was the right spot and persevered regardless.”

plus a bit of swag (coasters, glasses, etc., with the brewery’s logo) as well. The Handle Bar has hosted several takeovers that have featured such highly regarded California breweries as Drakes; Lagunitas; Rubicon (with a delicious, hoppy Irish Red Ale); North Coast (with their hearty Old No. 38 Stout); and Green Flash, whose IPA lives up to its “extravagantly hopped” billing.

The real feather in The Handle Bar’s cap, though, is regularly featuring one of the most highly rated beers in the country on tap—Russian River Brewing Company’s Pliny the Elder, a super-hoppy double-IPA. IPAs—and their hopped-up relatives, double-, and triple- (or imperial) IPAs—are the fastest growing beer style in the United States, and this West Coast phenomenon is a direct outgrowth of beers like Sierra Nevada’s popular Celebration and Torpedo ales and, more recently, its exceedingly hoppy Hoptimum. And some of those Sierra Nevada selections, along with many other “special offerings,” will no doubt be available when the local brewery visits for a total taptakeover (all 20 handles!) on Aug. 17.

The Handle Bar also has an interesting selection of bottled beers—including several from Europe—as well as an assortment of wines by the glass.

And complementing the excellent beer selection is the pub’s menu of excellent “German-inspired” grub.

Kanabrocki pointed out that “we wanted to feature food that you couldn’t find at every bar.”

I first got hooked on the Brewben, their “twist on the classic Reuben—thick slices of hot pastrami, smothered in beer cheese and sauerkraut on grilled pumpernickel bread,” only later moving on to the roasted-turkey sandwich, and finally, last week, I switched over to the magnificent toasted Black Forest ham and swiss on rye. All their “Large Plates” (7.50$8.50), except the Artisanal Plate, include German potato salad or red cabbage with the sandwich. An extra bonus is their Frequent Lunch Card which, after nine large-plate meals, entitles the bearer of same to a free lunch.

Oh, and happy hour is from 2 to 6 p.m. Ω

CORNERSTONE MORE BEER? Faithful readers know that Arts DEVO is a fan of a well-crafted brew, and so

it has been with great enthusiasm that I and my fellow CN&R beer-lovers have recently immersed ourselves in our area’s excellent craft beers and the people who make and sell them.

Some of those excellent local beers are, of course, being made by homebrewers.

And, while I have brewed a few of my own IPAs and a couple of brown ales, my creations haven’t been nearly as tasty as some other local suds. My buddy and West by Swan guitarist Dan Greenfield has cranked out several all-grain batches—steam beers, farmhouse ales, bocks, bitters, and more—that have been extremely tasty. And, more recently, a local homebrewer I met just last week, Heather Best, shared a unique creation that knocked my hair back: a lavender pale ale. Inspired by a clone recipe of Sierra Nevada’s Pale Ale, Best added some edible lavender with the hops during dry-hopping, and the result is a clean and surprisingly well-balanced ale that is a perfect complement to a hot summer day.

I met Best out at Feather Falls Casino Brewing Co. when I was following brewmaster Roland Allen around the brewhouse for this week’s “Craft-beer takeover” story (see page 18). She was recently laid off from her job as an IT project manager, and in addition to spending her time making beer, Best has been interning with Allen in an effort to learn more about brewing and to decide if she might want to pursue a career in the field.

“I absolutely love it. It’s just totally natural,” she said of the experience at Feather Falls thus far.

“There are just infinite possibilities with craft beer,” Best said, and that mindset is put into practice with her own homebrew portfolio which, in addition to the lavender brew, features things like an amber peach-tea ale, a honey-basil ale, and even a key-lime-pie variety. Her home production is cranked up to two batches a week these days as she prepares to supply beer for her upcoming wedding. “We’re doing between 50 and 100 gallons of homemade beer. We’ll probably have anywhere from 15 to 20 things on tap.”

MORE GROOVE? There was a lot more to my Q&A with Mike Wofchuck—bandleader of Chico samba troupe Wolf Thump—that I couldn’t fit into the story on page 29. Here’s just one item that didn’t make the cut, about Wofchuck playing in both The Mother Hips and MaMuse: CN&R: How does it feel to have been in two of the most influential and popular bands in Chico over the last couple of decades?

Wofchuck: “They’re just my good friends, both groups. It’s just very natural, both processes, and I’m just very blessed to have friends who are amazing songwriters. If you combine amazing songwriting and amazing vocal talent, it’s a big blessing to have those two together. I just feel really blessed that I was able to support those messages in both groups.

“And with MaMuse, it’s just been, once again, a very natural unfolding. [It’s] so amazing to see what those gals are up to, just the beauty of their expression. [When] they started writing songs, I heard them a couple times, so I definitely kind of knocked on the door a little bit, because I knew it was going to be good.

“At first, I didn’t know necessarily how to do it. I was with my sticks and, you know, we got together one time and it just didn’t sound right. But then David [Longaker, Karisha’s father] was like, ‘Hey, check these out,’ and gave me some brushes. And then it opened up this whole new world for me—especially as a percussionist— of learning about sensitivity, learning how to support in a powerful way, yet a very low-volume way, which I’d never really experienced. For sure, [with] The Mother Hips, we had a lot of dynamics. But in samba, the West African drumming thing—that’s just like full-on. You’re slamming. So it was really nice to have this experience with MaMuse of learning how to just totally get under the melody. It’s been great for me to learn about that.”

When Blanshei is describing her art, the Tickets: $10 interaction can be jarringly intimate. “I draw (proceeds to benefit Cal Fire). the corpses of women a lot,” she said. “Each corpse represents a woman that I’ve tried to be, and then I’m always embarrassed afterward by the woman I’ve tried to be, so I kill her and stick her in my freezer. I have a library of characters that I’ve tried to be. The corpses represent me growing in and out of my insecurities,” she said.

Blanshei has a self-portrait included in the Empire show: “It’s a woman, or myself, and she’s standing on a road [that] goes off into the distance, and at the end of the road is a monster. It’s about interpersonal fear. In my life right now, I’m pretty scared of a lot of things, so I get to get super vulnerable in front of Chico.”

Vulnerability seems to be a theme for Blanshei, one that’s at the heart of her burlesque-show project as well. “It’s going to be so wild!” she said. She is producing, directing and performing in the show, which is titled Everyone in Outer Space Wants to go to Japan (happening Aug. 18 at the Chico Women’s Club). “It’s my imagination coming alive. in my show to [become] more vulnerable and [show] the audience what wonderful, amazing women they are in the end.”

Blanshei explained the production as a love story told in Japanese folk-style. The tale’s main character is the moon, and there will be parallels to Homer’s Odyssey to be found, she said, for those who are paying attention.

She came up with the idea for the show during an argument. “I was fighting with someone, and sometimes when I fight with people, I start to disassociate from the situation, and start daydreaming about other things,” Blanshei said. “And while I was fighting with him, I wasn’t paying attention to him anymore, because he was so uninteresting, and I came up with this idea in my head.” She said she had been thinking and wishing that someone else would throw a burlesque show in Chico, when suddenly she realized, “Oh, I’m totally capable.

Why don’t I do it?”

Blanshei is currently working with local jazz/prog band Bogg, artist/writer Jason “Goat” Rankin, and approximately 10 actresses/dancers in preparation. While she created the characters and the story, she has given them over to Goat to flesh out with dialogue.

Other than a few bit parts in plays and amateur films, Blanshei doesn’t have much performance experience, but she is nonetheless energetic and not too nervous about putting herself out there.

She said that when she gets on stage, she feels like a totally different person, which is exactly what she’s going for: “That’s when I know I’ve done my job as an artist, when people don’t recognize me anymore. The best thing you could ever hear as an artist is that someone just forgot about everything else around them while you were performing. [I want] to make a room full of people forget where they are because my art has captivated them.” Ω

kind of behind-the-scenes look at a particularly interesting aspect of the pop-music industry. But its most powerful point is that, while they were not quite in the spotlight (hence that “20 Feet”), the best of the backup singers were right at the very lively heart of some great music.

Neville makes sure that they get some spotlight time here via a combination of archival footage, performance excerpts, recent interviews with the singers themselves, and commentary from the rock stars they worked with. More than a dozen performers get the benefit of that spotlight, and several—Darlene Love, Lisa Fischer, Merry Clayton, Claudia Lennear—make especially striking impressions, musically and otherwise.

Bruce Springsteen, Mick Jagger, Stevie Wonder, Sheryl Crow and Sting are all on hand to offer appreciative commentary and insight, but Neville makes the best case for the backups’ artistry via performance excerpts. Rousing sequences in the early stages—The Raelettes with

Love and Fischer are held in particular esteem by their colleagues and contemporaries, both for their extraordinary talents and the dynamic force of their respective personalities. Neville gives the two of them extra screen time, both for personal reflections on the peculiar trajectories of their separate careers and for solo demonstrations of their individual vocal gifts. Clayton, Lennear, Táta Vega, and Mable John (a former Raelette who is now a gospel-singing pastor) get similar attention, albeit less extensive.

Fischer has been featured in The Rolling Stones’ touring band since 1989, but the good Stones-related anecdotes come from Lennear (whom Jagger singles out as the best of the Ikettes) and Clayton (who delivers a delightfully rambunctious account of being called in the middle of the night to add what turned out to be an indelible touch to the Stones’ studio recording of “Gimme Shelter”). Racial and cultural issues come to the fore in Clayton’s bristling account of being called to sing on Lynyrd Skynyrd’s “Sweet Home Alabama.”

And Love tells of “ghosting” the vocals for a song by The Crystals and then watching that girl group lip-synching her work on national television.

David Bowie, Luther Vandross, Phil Spector, Ray Charles, Ike Turner and Michael Jackson are also significant presences along the way, via archival footage. And Lou Reed leaves a trenchant mark by way of the vocals and an idiosyncratic twist in the lyrics for “Walk on the Wild Side,” which plays over the opening credits. Ω

The second installment in the film franchise based on Rick Riordan’s young-adult fantasy series about the young Percy Jackson, who is drawn into the world of the gods when he discovers he’s the son of Poseidon.

Planes

Saturday Night Live’s Jason Sudeikis plays a drug dealer who agrees to smuggle a big shipment of pot into the country from Mexico for one of his clients (Ed Helms). The Conjuring

There’s a creeping sense of familiarity with each run at the haunted-house premise, and with The Conjuring, the latest from James Wan (Saw, Insidious), that familiarity is amped to the nth degree with

an indulgence of homages to the touchstones of the genre, with the film’s structure of acts obviously: The Amityville Horror, Poltergeist, The Exorcist, wrapping up with The Evil Dead. But the end result is more of a homogenized Scooby-Doo episode padded to feature length and played straight. There are some spooky moments to be found—a couple of decent chills and one good jump scare. And one clever approach is having the focus be more on the ghost hunters themselves (Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson, playing reallife paranormal investigators Lorraine and Ed Warren). Unfortunately, Ed and Lorraine aren’t very interesting. Cinemark 14 and Feather River Cinemas.

Despicable Me 2

Super-villain Gru (Steve Carell) turned straight in the original Despicable Me, so what’s left for him to do in round two? Fall in love. He’s also trying to stop an evil-doer who has stolen a chemical that turns any living creature into a killing machine. But the romantic subplot, involving flirtations between Gru and his detective partner Lucy (Kristen Wiig), proves more entertaining than the mediocre storyline about the search for criminal suspect Eduardo (Benjamin Bratt, in exaggerated Latino-stereotype mode).

Whatever magic is lost from the original film is recovered by Gru’s tiny minions: His helpers look like aliens but possess the charm of babbling babies—a weird combination that’s onscreen gold (as was proven by the booming laughs from every child in the theater).

A 3-D computer-animated feature based on the convoluted premise of a snail who, thanks to freak accident, becomes super fast and wants to race against cars in the Indianapolis 500. Starring the voices of Ryan Reynolds, Paul Giamatti, Samuel L. Jackson, Maya Rudolph and Snoop Dogg. Cinemark 14. Rated PG.

The Wolverine

We join Logan/Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) in a hole in a Japanese POW camp just across from Nagasaki during the endgame of World War II. He saves one of his captors from the ensuing nuclear holocaust and 50 years later is summoned to the man’s deathbed with the hope that his mutant regenerative abilities might extend the guy’s life. Of course, it doesn’t work that way, and so the old dude exits, leaving all his wealth to granddaughter Mariko (Tao Okamoto). This is the point where any promise dies on the vine. Mariko’s only narrative function is to look pretty and give Wolverine someone to protect from the Japanese underworld. So we end up with Wolverine doing that stabby/slashy thing with his metal claws to ninjas and gangsters over and over and over and … It starts getting old fast. There is a lively set-piece involving Tokyo’s bullet train that’s fun, but that’s it. Cinemark 14, Feather River Cinemas and Paradise Cinema 7. Rated PG-13 —C.B.

Alan McDonald, 50, is the co-owner of a big piece of Chico history: Chico Home Brew Shop (1570 Nord Ave.). It was originally opened in downtown Chico in 1976 by Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. cofounder Ken Grossman. One of Grossman’s early employees at the store was then-Chico State student Dawn Letner, who bought the shop 20 years ago. Letner still runs it with her husband, McDonald, whom she considers the shop’s “beer expert.”

How did get into brewing beer?

I always enjoyed drinking beer but was bored with standard American lagers and stopped drinking for seven years. When I moved to Chico from Nevada 10 years ago, I tried a Sierra Nevada Pale Ale and said, “This is what I’ve been looking for!” So I became an avid home brewer and customer of Dawn’s brew shop for six years. I read every brewing book she had in the store and ended up marrying her four years ago.

How difficult is it to get started brewing?

If you can boil a pot of water, you can make beer.

Many home brewers say their first batch of beer was the best they ever made. It’s really hard to make a bad batch unless you mess up the sanitation, which seldom happens. In my 10 years of brewing, I’ve only thrown out one batch.

How much does it cost to brew?

The ingredients and equipment to make a batch of five gallons, or two cases, is about $100. Further batches are $30-$35. We’re the only store in Chico that sells the stuff. Web companies

may sell it cheaper, but it’s more expensive when you add in their shipping costs.

What advice do you have for beginning brewers?

Everything the beer touches after boiling needs to be sanitized. It’s also cheaper to brew during winter. Beer ferments at 68 degrees, so brewing it during the cold months can be done without using a special refrigerator. And though some would disagree, if you like beer, it’s cheaper to make it than to buy it.

What else do you sell?

We also sell products for making wine and cheese. Wine kits are our second biggest seller.

But many goat owners like to make their own cheese.

Any of your home brewers go pro?

We’ve had Roland Allen, who in the mid-’90s became the co-founder of the successful Butte Creek Brewing Company, which specializes in organic beers. Roland is now the brew master at the Feather Falls Casino.

Tsarnaev, Deen, Martin, Nakamura, and Constantin Rolling Stone’s August cover features Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, the Boston Marathon bombing suspect, and some people don’t like it. The photo Rolling Stone picked is from one of Tsarnaev’s online accounts and reveals him to be a good-looking teenager, which is no doubt why he chose it, and which these same people like even less than his being on the cover to begin with. That the accompanying text refers to him as a “monster” doesn’t count.

That Tsarnaev looks like he might be an ordinary young human upsets the most rabid fearmongers and rightly so. To present him as human, albeit a monster, threatens their world view, and nobody likes that. I’d like to see Rolling Stone give the same treatment to a drone pilot or some other hired killer. I don’t suppose I will, though.

Paula Deen, a restaurant owner and celebrity chef, has been getting flak for being racist, as though that’s illegal or even unusual. All of the reports I’ve seen say she used the “N-word,” and not one actually says what the N-word is. They assume we all know what it is and can fill in the blank, so they don’t have to be explicit and direct. They can just wuss out and make us think of the word that’s supposed to be so godawful without actually using it themselves. That’s professional journalism

today. Personally, I’m proud to be a Ninja.

Dora Charles, a black woman who worked for Deen 22 years, also accused her of asking Ineata “Jellyroll” Jones, another black woman on Deen’s payroll, to dress up like Aunt Jemima and flip shortcakes to entertain customers. Charles said that Jellyroll didn’t want to dress up like that, although she apparently did it anyway. Charles is still Deen’s friend, although now she says she “might feed her with a long-handled spoon.” I love that Southern talk.

As for Trayvon Martin, he was just in the wrong place at the wrong time, namely Florida since the European invasion. The media hoopla seems to assume that Florida is not the Deep South, where random murder of black people has been going on since the Civil War. The media needs a map. Before the Civil War, black slaves were worth too much money to just kill willy-nilly. With slavery now mostly confined to prisons, black people aren’t worth so much on the open market, so any coward with a gun can murder whomever he pleases.
