Races sans spectators Who doesn’t enjoy the sight of bicyclists, in their colorful jer-

seys, racing through downtown streets, leaning into the turns and jockeying for position? Chico is fortunate to host such a race each year, the Steve Harrison Memorial Downtown Criterium, which took place last Sunday (April 14).

The event is held in the memory of Harrison, an avid cyclist and Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. executive who died a few years ago. (A bike path connecting East 20th Street and Potter Road is also named after him.)

This was the seventh year for the criterium, and judging by the number of racers who participated, it remains a popular event in the cycling community. Unfortunately, not many people showed up to watch it this year.

Attendance was sparse, which raises some questions that the Chico Corsa Cycling Club, which organized the race, and city officials, who agreed to close off downtown to traffic from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., need to answer before it takes place next year.

Why wasn’t attendance better? Were the races adequately publicized?

(The CN&R, to cite one example, received no advance notification.) What level of attendance should city officials expect an event to generate before they agree to close downtown to traffic? How do downtown business owners feel about the race, the poor attendance and the street closures?

Because of Lower Bidwell Park, Chico is limited in the number of north-south roadways its residents can use. Downtown’s Main and Broadway are important north-south corridors and should not be shut down without good reason. A well-attended criterium is probably a good reason; a criterium that draws few spectators and seems to exist primarily for the racers to enjoy—well, maybe not. Ω

Beneath that picture was another picture of a winner of journalism’s most prestigious prize, smiling ecstatically as she holds up the work that garnered recognition, a story about an off-duty police officer whose reckless driving had, according to the headline of the article by she wrote, resulted in “Ruined lives.”

Then, as if to drive home the point, the unrelenting coverage of the Boston bombings featured a barrage of ghoulishness. There were pictures of the little boy who died, the young woman who died, and the people who’d lost limbs, all soaked in sentimentality and oversimplifications that turned the dead and injured into one-dimensional caricatures of car4 CN&R April 18, 2013

nage. The TV anchors solemnly intoned “prayers for the families,” and conferred praise for the “heroes who rushed to help the injured.” They stood on the bloody sidewalks and deplored the evil, and repeated the defiant declaration that we are not a nation that buckles to terrorists.

We are, of course, soured at the soul, not only by the acts themselves, but also by the maudlin media mantra that treats all these stories exactly the same, that sells us the bloodshed between commercials for Cialis.

Forty-two people died in a series of bombings across Iraq on the same day three Americans died in Boston, but that news was swallowed in the media wallow. We watched the same loop of video replayed endlessly while Anderson, Wolf and the rest intoned their banal comments about what an awful thing had happened, something we knew in the first 20 minutes, but were reminded of, nonstop, every moment of the days to come.

Such obsessive focus may serve the interests of the bombers, hyping the terror, and sickening us all with the exploitation of the evil. But who knows? There might be peer recognition for it somewhere down the line, a Pulitzer, perhaps. Or, if not that, a bump in the ratings, at least, or an uptick in ad revenues. Ω

Tear down the dams On Thursday, April 4, the U.S. Department of the Interior

released the final environmental-impact statement on what would be the largest dam-removal project in American history, tearing down four dams on the Klamath River. The EIS is the most comprehensive study ever done on the river system, which begins in Oregon and flows through far Northern California on its way to the Pacific.

The report’s unequivocal conclusion: The dams should be removed.

Three of the dams, Iron Gate, Copco 1 and Copco 2, are in Siskiyou County; the fourth, J. C. Boyle, is in Oregon.

Removal wouldn’t be cheap or easy. Cost is estimated at $1 billion, and it would take 15 years. But that expense is less over time than it would cost to maintain the reservoirs and build federally mandated fish ladders, and in addition the deconstruction process would employ 4,600 people during those 15 years.

Removal would also allow, for the first time in more than a century, chinook and coho salmon and steelhead trout access to 420 miles of historic habitat, one of the most fertile spawning areas in western North America. The study estimates that salmon populations on the Klamath, the third largest run in the West (after the Columbia and Sacramento rivers), would increase by around 80 percent.

Removing the dams would also resolve long-simmering water-related disputes among farmers, Indian tribes, environmentalists, commercial salmon harvesters and PacifiCorps Power Co., owner of the dams. Indeed, the fact that all of these groups were able to come up with an agreement they all support is testimony to its solidity and importance.

Now it’s up to Congress, which unfortunately is currently in a cutting, not a spending, mood. But it would be foolish for lawmakers not to get behind this extraordinary local solution to a problem that will only get worse if it’s not acted upon. Let Rep. Doug LaMalfa know you support removal of the Klamath dams. Ω

Political sex advice

He’s outta here: I ran into erstwhile City Council candidate Toby Schindelbeck last week at Chico Sports Club. He thanked me for my March 7 column supporting his effort to have the City Council consider his Second Amendment resolution, and we agreed that the council hadn’t handled it well. Then he told me he’d sold his two Nutrishop stores and was moving to Coeur d’Alene, Idaho—that very weekend, in fact.

On his Facebook page, he tells why he’s moving. He and his wife “really loved Chico,” he says, and “when the opportunity came for me to run for council and try to make a difference locally, I jumped on it and did my best.

But, Chico does not want to change. The majority seem to be just fine with a liberal majority ruining our great city, and it was no longer the quality of life that we moved here for. Coupled with the Democrat supermajority in the Legislature that happened at the last election, I knew it was time to move on.”

I like Toby and respect his passion. He stirred things up and tried to make democracy work according to his lights.

But I’ve lived here a lot longer than he did, and I’ve seen liberal councils and conservative councils come and go, and none of them have been able to ruin Chico. So far, anyway.

Bad place for a bar Re “Brothers divided” (Newslines, by Howard Hardee, April 4): I applaud Eric Hart for challenging the opening of a new bar in downtown Chico. At this time, when the community is seeking ways to battle its alcohol problem, we should be seeking to decrease the number of bars and liquor stores in town rather than opening new ones.

It seems particularly concerning that this proposed location for a new bar is a block away from the Chico State campus. If Scott Baldwin is truly interested in opening a business that would benefit the community, perhaps he should try one that is not alcoholrelated.

Re “The day center idea” (Editorial, April 4): Why don’t you set up a day center for the homeless to hang out at your house, since you’re so compassionate? Lead by example.

Bob Mulholland is again having fun at Republicans’ expense.

On Monday, April 8, Mulholland, a longtime state Democratic Party strategist who lives in Chico, sent an open letter to Reince Priebus, chairman of the Republican National Committee, and Jim Brulte, who chairs the California Republican Party, offering them “some friendly advice” regarding an April 10 RNC meeting in Los Angeles.

“Your meeting [at the Loews Hollywood Hotel] is only a 2.3-mile taxi ride to the Voyeur West Hollywood Club, an erotic bondage-theme sex simulating club,” he writes, “so you might want to assign monitors (or GPS anchor bracelets) on your RNC members, especially those from Kansas, Nebraska, Idaho, etc., if they don’t have their wives with them.”

The Voyeur, he reminds them, was the club where, in 2010, RNC staffers spent $1,946.25 for an “outing”—much to the embarrassment of then-RNC Chairman Michael Steele when the media found out.

That wasn’t the end of Mulholland’s japery. He’d saved the best for last.

“However, if some members need to get out and ‘experience’ a club not seen at home in Kansas,” he writes, “Bruce Herschensohn and I would recommend the Seventh Veil at 7180 Sunset Blvd. in Hollywood. Bruce always thought it was a discreet club, and less than a mile from your meeting.”

People with long memories will recognize this as a nose-thumbing of historic proportions, one that goes back to the 1992 U.S. Senate race. At a Barbara Boxer campaign event in Chico just days before the election, Mulholland publicly accused her Republican opponent, Herschensohn, who was running as a family-values candidate, of frequenting Hollywood strip clubs—specifically, the Seventh Veil. The resulting media firestorm tipped the dead-heat race Boxer’s way, and she’s claimed the seat ever since.

Fracking for free Re “Big money in fracking California” (Earthwatch, March 28): Great article about the proposed fracking in the Monterey shale formation to extract its billions of barrels of oil and gas. At the price we charge for our oil and gas, it’s obviously very attractive to oil corporations.

After all, we Californians give our oil and gas away to any corporation that can take it, free of charge! Who can’t make a profit when your raw material is supplied free? California is the only state to charge no royalty at all for these public resources. Even Texas and Alaska, two staunchly conservative pro-business states, charge hefty royalties on every gallon of their resources taken. That generates billions for their state budgets.

So not only will California have billions of gallons of our valuable water taken and pumped into the shale formation as part of the fracking process, not only will we have huge quantities of mysterious fracking-aiding chemicals pumped into the earth with that water, not only will we have all this liquid pumped under tremendous pressures into a known earthquake prone area, but we will then let the oil corporations take what they can get for free!

Well California, are you ready to get fracked-over?

The value of CEQA Re “Reform CEQA and create jobs” (Guest comment, by Assemblyman Brian Dahle, March 28): Boy, what a nebulous, vague, and profit-inspired banter in favor of wholesale deregulation—the neocon party line. Mr. Dahle may or may not have any real suggestions for “reforming” CEQA, but he sure doesn’t share them. More than likely he has wealthy friends who are tired of considering what the public brings to the attention of lawmakers through the CEQA process. If it wasn’t for CEQA we could’ve had that peripheral canal long ago! Go Jerry!

The truth is that CEQA establishes an opportunity for the public to comment on a variety of environmental-quality issues. It’s not just for tree huggers. It also grants opportunity for parents worried that increased traffic may endanger their children, or that some antiunion mega-center might impact the economic stability of a region or class, etc.

CEQA expands the consideration of a project beyond the backroom deals of those who would profit from a project. CEQA requires the “lead agency” (the one that approves a project) to respond to the public comment. This is something far different than just getting up and saying your three minutes’ worth before an unresponsive city council.

Is the entertainment media so bored for something to write about that it chooses to give this snakeoil salesman room to rant?

Homeless cleansing I’m shocked at the TV news coverage featuring homeless citizens doing nothing more than being downtown against a background message of how unclean and unsafe downtown Chico is due to their presence.

When the cops don’t call I’m writing to express my frustration with the Chico Police Department. Last Thursday my girlfriend was shopping at Costco. While she was inside [the store] her vehicle was hit in the parking lot. Some bystanders saw the whole thing happen and wrote down a description of the driver and the vehicle as well as a license-plate number.

These nice people even called 911 and left a note on our car.

My girlfriend called the police right away and was told to go ahead and leave, and a cop would call her back shortly. After a few hours she called again, asking what was going on, and was told a cop would call. Officer Peña was supposed to call back. He didn’t call.

The next day we were told Officer Peña would call that afternoon on his shift. That afternoon we called again and were then told he was off till Monday and would call Monday afternoon. We called at 6 p.m. Monday night and were told he would call in just a few minutes.

At this time we have heard from no one at the Police Department.

What is going on? We have spoken to other people who have had the same thing happen. It is very upsetting to be blown off, especially

Council hypocrisy In watching the evening news recently, I was appalled to witness the deceit of Ann Schwab of the Chico City Council retaking her oath of office. Since 2009 I’ve been demanding the city return the vehicles and work tools it confiscated from me without due process of law. The council’s ignoring these demands clearly demonstrates it doesn’t support the Constitution—at least not the Fourth and Fifth amendments.

The city didn’t have a warrant to take my property, nor could it have gotten one if it tried. My registrations were paid, but as I explained to Officer Person in the field, the DMV had failed to send my stickers. Instead of confirming with the DMV the legitimacy of my explanation, Officer Person proceeded to seize my vehicle. As a result, I’ve been condemned to live my life in isolation and poverty in my rural Tehama County home ever since.

PERSON OF INTEREST IN KING CASE

The investigation into last month’s disappearance of Chicoan Neal King, 24, has led to the arrests of two Oroville residents on felony marijuana charges.

Donald and Jennifer Cheatham pleaded not guilty in Butte County Superior Court Tuesday (April 16) to marijuana cultivation and intent to distribute. Donald Cheatham was also charged with receiving a stolen firearm and is still being held on $500,000 bail. Jennifer was released on $80,000 bail, District Attorney Mike Ramsey told the CN&R. The Cheathams own the Oroville residence that was King’s last known destination for a March 26 business meeting allegedly involving marijuana. The couple also own Amazon Garden Supply in Oroville.

Ramsey said Donald Cheatham is a person of interest who may have information about King’s last known whereabouts, and that the investigation is ongoing.

FAILING GRADE FOR LOCAL LEVEES

The current maintenance of two levee systems along Butte Creek just south of Chico is “unacceptable,” according to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The Corps conducted inspections for the Central Valley Flood Protection Board and the California Department of Water Resources, the agencies responsible for maintaining the levees.

According to a press release, “The most serious deficiencies throughout the systems were erosion, rodent control and encroachments.” Other local unacceptable levees identified due to erosion and rodents include those on the Feather River where it passes through Live Oak, Gridley and Yuba City, and five along the Mud Creek/Chico Creek system in north Chico. Two levees along the Sacramento River in Glenn and Colusa counties are currently undergoing inspection.

The levees rated unacceptable “are ineligible for federal aid in repairing flood or storm damage to levees until their deficiencies are corrected,” the press release warns.

POLICE STUMPED BY BROTHERS’ MURDERS

Chico police are re-examining the cold-case murder of Audelino Valladares-Mata nearly six years ago following the recent shooting death of his brother, Jerónimo Valladares-Mata.

Lt. Mike O’Brien said both Tehama County men “have very squeaky clean backgrounds” and that a common motive has not been found. Audelino Valladares-Mata, 51, of Los Molinos, was shot to death in the summer of 2007 while installing a manufactured home at a trailer park on Henshaw Avenue. He was slain in the early morning, as his son worked nearby.

This is the future according to author, inventor and futurist Ray Kurzweil, who spoke at Laxson Auditorium last Friday (April 12) in the latest installment of Chico State University’s President’s Lecture Series. Kurzweil’s presentation was titled “The Futurist info: Acceleration of Technology in Learn more about the 21st Century: The Impact on Ray Kurzweil at www.kurzweiltech. Business, the Economy, and com/about Society & How to Retain Our ray.html. Humanity Through It.”

Chico State President Paul Zingg didn’t hold back his adulation while introducing Kurzweil, likening him to Thomas Jefferson and Benjamin Franklin and saying his appearance was on par with Nobel and poet laureates who have appeared on campus.

Zingg listed a brief rundown of Kurzweil’s accomplishments, which include inventing the first synthesizer capable of accurately recreating any orchestral instrument and text-to-voice recognition machines to help the blind.

Kurzweil, Zingg said, holds 19 honorary doctorates, and has been recognized by Presidents Lyndon Johnson, Ronald Reagan and Bill Clinton.

Zingg noted that in Kurzweil’s first book, 1990’s The Age of Intelligent Machines, he “predicted the emergence of the World Wide Web, a computer winning the world chess championship, the emergence of ‘intelligent’ weapons and the ability for computers even to win on Jeopardy!”

Kurzweil’s current tour is in support of his latest book, How to Create a Mind: The Secret of Human Thought Revealed. He is also head of engineering at Google and was named by the Public Broadcasting Service as one of 16 “revolutionaries who made America.”

with some personal history, saying he knew he wanted to be an inventor by the age of 5, and soon after began collecting

electronic devices and machinery in various states of repair. He recalled looking over his inventory as a child and thinking, “If I can figure out how to put these together, I can solve anything.”

While Kurzweil’s claims of what’s to come in the not-so-distant future may rival a science-fiction writer’s flights of fancy, he explained they are in fact grounded in science, and he had graphs to prove it. His analysis and predictions are based on a rule of his own creation called “The Law of Accelerating Returns.”

He explained he developed this theory as a way to set timelines for his own inventions. Timing is everything in inventing, he explained, and new technologies are not generally successful if they come too far ahead or behind their time. Thus, he created the law to map out his own long-term projects so that by the time they are perfected, the world will be ready for them and his work wouldn’t be nullified by getting beaten to the punch.

The Law of Accelerating Returns rejects the commonly accepted idea that technology progresses on a linear path, arguing that it instead grows exponentially. New technologies help us develop even better technologies, Kurzweil said.

One young man, referred to by a later questioner as “the hippie,” asked what was on a lot of people’s minds when presented with Kurzweil’s rosy future view.

“I came straight from an environmentalist club meeting, and there were a lot of people there who are pretty sure that we’re screwed,” he began. “Although I’m on your side, I don’t feel entirely misguided in thinking we might be screwed … convince me, Ray.” Kurzweil responded: “If I thought that progress was linear … I too would feel we would not be able to overcome these mounting challenges in the environment and other areas. But it’s because we have this progression and this trajectory that I believe we can.

“If we only had 20th-century technologies we couldn’t find solutions, but with emerging technologies, we can.” Ω

introduced by City Manager Brian Nakamura, who’d hired him last month from his job as assistant auditor for the city of San Diego.

Constantin was named to the position the day after Jennifer Hennessy gave her notice after six years on the job. As the city’s finances worsened, Hennessy was often the target of sharp criticism from some council members and agenda-driven citizens. The finance director makes recommendations to the council and gives status reports. Each year an independent auditor’s report gave Hennessy credit for a job well done. But controversy comes with the job in times of dire finances.

Hennessy said her decision to leave was based both upon the attraction of a job opening in the Riverside County city of Temecula and a desire to leave Chico after a tough run.

In an interview prior to the council meeting, the 37-year-old Constantin talked about his decision and the controversies he is escaping in San Diego, where he’s served as assistant auditor since 2010.

“I made a three-year commitment in San Diego that was up in February,” he said. “At about that point I wasn’t really happy because I wasn’t feeling appreciated.”

Last April an employee in his office

fell off a colleague’s exercise equipment during her lunch break and fractured her elbow.

Constantin reported the accident, a state investigator was called in, but no wrongdoing was found.

A series of stories that ran in both the San

Diego Union-Tribune and the online Voice of San Diego painted a picture of an office in turmoil. An employee in a sworn statement made during the investigation, one story said, alleged that Constantin and his boss, Auditor Eduardo Luna, had told employees not to tell the investigator about previous workplace injuries.

Such statements led to a second investigation in which office employees charged that Luna and Constantin were determined to find out who had voiced complaints during the first investigation. A number of employees said they were working under hostile conditions.

The final report from the second investigation included employee statements such as, “The environment smacks of hypocrisy, and as a result of the latest series of events I no longer feel comfortable discussing anything with management regarding administrative issues or the audit process.” And, “When Mr. Luna and Mr. Constantin were asking other people about who was behind the investigation, I felt threatened and intimidated.”

Constantin and Luna were cleared of any wrongdoing but were admonished in the report’s conclusion. It said that while the two

To illustrate this, he noted spoken language—the first human-invented informational technology—took hundreds of thousands of years to develop. It took tens of thousands of years to develop that into written language, and considerably less time to invent the printing press.

Radio, television, the Internet and other technologies are now developing at a much faster, exponential rate, and Kurzweil believes this will continue.

While he has an idea of what might come in time, he admitted there are things of which even he cannot dream.

He said if you were able to meet the first speaking humans, they would have had no conception of the things language would eventually enable, like the development of art and music. Our future, likewise, holds concepts as-yet undiscovered and undreamed of by humanity.

Kurzweil said the next big leaps and bounds will be in how we can evolve our own bodies and brains, largely due to the Human Genome Project. Before the human genome was mapped in the early 2000s, health and medicine were not “informational systems” subject to the Law of Accelerating Returns, he explained. Now that they are, we will see them progress at rates similar to how we’ve seen computers and other technology develop in the last 50 years.

Kurzweil acknowledged there is still a disparity between the “haves and havenots,” but that technological advancement is the key to ending this someday.

He also said as these technologies emerge, they may initially be available only to the wealthy, but will eventually benefit everyone.

“Just look at cell phones,” he said, pointing out that 20 years ago they were an expensive novelty. “Now the technology is much better and they’re available to everybody.”

were entitled to their opinions regarding the investigation itself, they should not have gone after the employees who complained.

“Doing so reflects an intent to improperly influence all those who participated in the investigation, and has caused substantial fear of retaliation to an already susceptible work force,” the report concludes.

Constantin’s arrival comes just as many employees in Chico’s City Hall anonymously express concerns for their jobs and an uneasy working environment in the wake of the sudden and unexplained departures of Assistant City Manager John Rucker and Building and Development Services Director Fritz McKinley.

Constantin said he is relieved to be

out of San Diego and happy to be in Chico, the home of his wife’s family.

“I knew I hadn’t done anything wrong,” he said. “It was just the way they handled it.

So I started looking for positions up here.”

The situation in San Diego, he said, comes with the territory of the job he held.

“Anybody in a supervisory position who holds their staff accountable both in the private and the public sector will always face these kinds of challenges,” he said.

Constantin said the uneasy situation caused him to look for work elsewhere.

“I looked and tried to find positions in cities where I thought I could really make an impact,” he said. “I saw the assistant city manager job in Chico, applied for it, and was one of the two top finalists. I didn’t get the job and thought, ‘It’s over.’”

When Hennessy told City Manager Nakamura that she was leaving for Temecula, he called Constantin and offered him the job.

“I got a phone call that said, ‘Hey, would you consider this position, since our finance director is leaving?’ I said, ‘Yeah, absolutely.’

The next thing you know I was selected.”

Nakumara said he had followed the San Diego investigations and had made the City Council aware of them. He said controversy comes with the auditor’s job.

“I guess it’s no worse than being city manager,” he said.

According to his contract, Constantin is scheduled take over as director of administrative services, a new department that is part of Nakamura’s restructuring of the city government. The council gave final approval to the restructuring Tuesday night. Constantin was hired at a salary of $130,000 that will jump to $160,000 when he takes that job.

Constantin serves on the accrediting commission for community colleges, is a sworn reserve police officer for the city of Hayward, and in 1999, at age 23, ran unsuccessfully for state Senate, describing himself as a pro-choice, pro-environment and pro-education Republican.

the entrenched territorial disputes and violent attacks and retaliation in the Middle East? Chico State professor Michael Leitner thinks so.

Leitner gave a talk, video show and musical performance on Tuesday afternoon (April 16) at Chico State explaining how engaging in mutual sports and recreational programs could foster peace in the region.

“I’m a recreation teacher and I like it, but these programs could mean the difference between life and death,” said Leitner, a professor in the Recreation, Hospitality and Parks Management Department.

Leitner, who doesn’t propose any specific Middle East political solution, told a packed auditorium of about 150 in Chico State’s Ayres Hall that he has studied and researched the peacemaking powers of several sports and recreation programs upon Arabs and Jews for nearly 20 years. The results show a marked increase in mutual trust and decrease in the hatred they had for each other before entering these programs.

“Arab kids learned that the Israeli kids didn’t hate them anywhere near as much as they thought, and vice versa,” he said.

The Mifalot project organizes Israeli, Palestinian and Jordanian youth into mixed soccer teams once a month for 10 months; the Friendship Games bring together collegeage teams from several Middle Eastern and European countries to play basketball and interact socially for one week; and the third program, the Peres Center for Peace (named after current Israeli president, former prime minister and Nobel Peace Prize winner Shimon Peres), employs Israelis and Arabs in sports and the arts to create camaraderie.

All three programs, said Leitner, have proven effective when the groups mix nationalities.

attitudes of these lifelong enemies toward each other. Many remarked that the program was the most significant experience of their life, he said.

Leitner said one initial survey of the participants revealed that 7 percent trusted the other side. In another, just 2 percent reported having that trust. However, in exit surveys the percentages rose to 40 percent.

“It’s not going to solve the problem,” Leitner wrote in a press release. “What this is about is to lay the foundations for peaceful relations to become the norm and for peace to become the norm.”

During his talk, Leitner lamented tragedies such as the 9/11 attacks and this week’s Boston Marathon bombings, which killed three and injured more than 170.

But he noted that the events are a small taste of the terrorism Israel has suffered over the years.

“Israel has one-fortieth the population of the U.S,” he said.

“So to get a better picture of what its people have endured, try multiplying the deaths of the U.S. attacks by 40.”

said she spent two years as a Peace Corps volunteer in a Jordanian village. She said one of the women there told her, “You are OK, but I want to have four children so they can kill Americans.”

Leitner didn’t end his talk with those discouraging words.

“I’ll leave you on a high note,” said Leitner as he picked up a guitar and led the audience in a singalong of an Israeli peace song called “Salaam” that mixes both Hebrew and Arabic words, which he projected on a screen.

After his talk Leitner explained that, although he’s Jewish, he first came to live extensively in Israel for a year in 1994. That is when he discovered that Israel had more than 100 Arab and Israeli peacecoordinating projects that ranged from cooking to dancing and even making mutual pornography videos—a project that was shortly discontinued.

“You never hear about these in the media because they only print the bad news,” he said.

However, Leitner found that these programs didn’t track the results, which started him on his research mission. One of the best outcomes happened last year, when the Mifalot program, which had 1,000 participants, received a $1 million grant to expand to 40,000 participants over three years.

“We’re talking about a major change in people’s attitudes,” Leitner said. “If we could reach 450,000 kids, that would be even better.”

Unscripted moments Council meeting enlivened by passionate expressions his week’s meeting of the Chico City Tnotable Council, on Tuesday, April 16, was more for its unscripted moments

than for anything the panel did with the items on its agenda.

One of those moments occurred right away, when Councilwoman Ann Schwab asked that an item—final approval of the restructuring of city government—be pulled from the consent agenda for discussion.

Schwab consistently has been the lone council member who has objected to City Manager Brian Nakamura’s handling of the changes, and she registered that objection again Tuesday.

“I feel that the method in which the reorganization has played out … has not been ideal,” she said, adding she’d been reminded of it when talking with a member of a city commission recently. He told her he was leaving his position when his term was up because “it’s very difficult to work … with employees who are frightened of losing their jobs and the lack of communication within the city.”

The measure passed without further discussion, 6-1.

The meeting otherwise featured Nakamura’s happy introduction of Chris Constantin, the new city finance director, whom the city manager touted for his skills and experience as an auditor and financial manager in San Diego as well as a one-time dance instructor.

With Constantin at the table next to new Assistant City Manager Mark Orme and Nakamura, it was clear that a new team was in charge at City Hall. With Constantin tentatively slated to head the new Administrative Services Department, Nakamura has just two department-head positions yet to fill: public works and community development.

Whether he’ll select existing city employees or turn to outsiders, as he has done thus far, remains to be seen.

Another unscripted moment

occurred toward the end of the meeting, when Stephanie Taber, the genteel but fierce Tea Party member who attends every council meeting, excoriated the panel for its handling of Toby Schindelbeck’s Second Amendment resolution at its April 2 meeting.

Her particular target was Vice Mayor Scott Gruendl, whom she angrily accused of sabotaging a motion on the floor to approve the resolution by spinning a rambling verbal web that ended up moving that the council members reaffirm their oaths to uphold the entire Constitution, not just the Second Amendment.

“I believe the council still has a motion on the floor supporting the Second Amendment resolution,” she insisted. She accused Mayor Mary Goloff of letting Gruendl violate Roberts’ Rules, and gave her a free copy of that rule book, as well as one of the Constitution.

Gruendl angrily responded by chiding those who make charges without reading the appropriate documents, in this case the agenda listing for the resolution. I later checked that listing, and, sure enough, it stated that the council was legally unable to approve the resolution without first having the city attorney put it in proper form. The motion to approve Schindelbeck’s resolution, in other words, was improper.

For one, the council tabled for a month its proposed ordinance banning carry-out plastic bags at certain stores. City Attorney Lori Barker requested the delay so she could review some 800 pages of documents submitted by the attorney for a group called Save the Plastic Bag. Go figure: A group that wants to save a notorious pollutant insists the city must do an environmental review of an ordinance banning that pollutant.

The council also reversed a decision by the Bidwell Park and Playground Commission not to allow a local man, Jarred Fisher, to hold a 5K obstacle race in Lower Park.

They did order Fisher to meet with city staff to make some improvements to his plan, however.

Finally, the council provided direction to City Clerk Debbie Presson as she sets up a reconstituted Sustainability Task Force. The new STF will have seven members with staggered terms, and at least three members will have particular expertise in sustainabilityrelated areas.

THE PULSE PRISON OVERSIGHT TO CONTINUE

On April 5, a federal judge denied Gov. Jerry Brown’s request in January to end federal oversight of California’s prison health-care system.

U.S. District Judge Lawrence Karlton said in a 68-page decision that “ongoing constitutional violations remain” in the state’s prison health-care system, including a failure to act on the recommendation of the court’s special master to adopt suicide-prevention methods, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Karlton also cited several further examples of “deliberate indifference” to mental-health issues in prisons: increasing inmate suicide rates, shortages of mental-health workers, and inadequate treatment facilities.

Meanwhile, the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation said it will appeal the decision. Deborah Hoffman, a department spokeswoman, said it’s time for the “costly and intrusive” oversight to end, which has been in place since a federal judge’s 2006 mandate.

Experts are expecting many small- and midsize California hospitals to close over the next decade as a result of costs associated with the Affordable Care Act. In reaction to rising health-care costs, insurers are increasingly excluding certain hospitals and forming smaller networks of providers, making it difficult for small- and mid-size hospitals to negotiate deals with such networks, according to the Los Angeles Times. Further, smaller hospitals are struggling with ACA-related funding cuts and financial penalties for patient readmissions.

Jim Lott, executive vice president of the Hospitals Association of Southern California, said about 40 of California’s hospitals—roughly 10 percent —could close in the next 10 years.

ALARM FATIGUE KILLS

The Joint Commission issued a Sentinel Event Alert on April 8 warning of “alarm fatigue,” a condition in which health-care providers become desensitized to the numerous audio and visual alerts issuing from hospital medical devices.

The alert noted that alarm-equipped devices are “essential to providing safe care to patients in many healthcare settings,” but they can sound several hundred times a day in a hospital unit, and most alarms do not require immediate clinical intervention, according to The Boston Globe.

Several recommendations were made for care providers, including identifying which alarms are unnecessary, establishing guidelines for tailoring alarm settings for individual patients, and deciding how to best set alarms on devices used in high-risk areas and for highrisk conditions.

Between January 2009 and June 2012, the Joint Commission received reports of 80 patient deaths and 13 serious injuries related to alarm fatigue.

O come from cancer treatment, among the most overlooked are the ones closest to f the myriad side effects that

the surface. Oncologists are so concerned with the internal impacts of radiation and chemotherapy that they don’t always focus on the external: skin, hair and nails.

That’s where dermatologists come in— particularly the dermatologists associated with the no-cost, all-volunteer-staffed Brighter Days community-service program. Launched in Chico seven years ago

by Dr. Donald Richey, Brighter Days now supports patients in seven cities and three states. (It’s soon to be eight, when Sacramento comes on board.)

Brighter Days brings together a dermatologist and cancer patients for one session each month. The physician shares tips for addressing side effects of treatments, then turns the gathering over to the participants for their own sharing. Attendees leave with a free basket of products to help ease their symptoms.

Most patients come only once, though occasionally someone returns.

The name Brighter Days, Richey concedes, “is kind of an oxymoron, because when you are having cancer, not knowing whether you are doing to live or die, and having serious side effects, it’s not that bright.”

However, considering his goal is to alleviate suffering, the name seems appropriate.

“It’s very, very rewarding,” Richey said. “It gets emotional sometimes. Holy cow—some of those stories will just break your heart!

“In one of my opening statements, I ask people if they remember when Kennedy was shot or how many remember 9/11; then I’ll ask, ‘How many of you remember the day you walked into the doctor and he said you have cancer?’ That’s a day you’ll never forget. That’s a life-changing experience.

“These people are hungry for information. When they come in, they’re scared, they’re sad. When they leave, they have a lot of information and they’ve talked to each other, and there’s a real power in that.”

Brighter Days sessions in Butte County take place the first Wednesday of the month. At 11 a.m., Richey visits the Enloe Regional Cancer Center in Chico; at 1 p.m., he visits the Feather River Hospital

Oncology Center in Paradise.

In the sessions, Richey employs a format he calls Talk, Touch and Tell.

Talk is fairly self-explanatory—the dermatologist makes a 20- to 30-minute instructional speech about the effects of cancer treatment and basic remedies to combat dry skin, lesions and other conditions.

Next comes Touch: “I go around to each person and take them by the hand to check their skin out,” Richey said. “It’s more the power of the touch [that makes an impact]—I’ve had patients say, ‘Thank you, Dr. Richey, nobody has touched me in a year.’”

Finally, there’s Tell—patients relaying their stories and wisdom. “It kind of becomes group therapy,” Richey said.

“Frankly, they share with each other how they deal with things.”

One particular session still resonates with Richey. Eleven of the 12 chairs were filled through Talk and Touch; the final woman arrived in time only for Tell. She settled into her seat just as the woman next to her was discussing intimate details of her gynecological cancer.

“She had multiple surgeries, multiple problems—very rare,” Richey recalled. “And the lady sitting next to her had just come from the gynecologist with the same, identical rare diagnosis. And so she was sitting next to the very lady who could help her, comfort her, give her advice. Now that’s an amazing coincidence.”

Richey came up with the

idea for Brighter Days around eight years ago. As he explained in a recent phone interview, “My daughter-in-law’s mother, Chris, a retired teacher in Portland, Ore.—a tall, dignified woman—had undergone 15 years of chemo, surgery and radiation for multiple cancers.

I got to know her basically in the last year of her life.

“I could see she had all these continuous problems with her skin, hair and nails. That was really in the realm of dermatology. And so I said, ‘Chris, if I could have made your life more comfortable, could have made you feel a little better about your appearance, made life a little more positive for you, would that have been worthwhile?’

“She said yes, and from there I developed this program.”

He began speaking about Brighter Days at dermatological conferences, and colleagues rallied to the cause. Affiliated pro-

grams sprang up in Santa Rosa, Burlin-game and Newport Beach, as well as Portsmouth, N.H., and Atlanta, Ga. The program depends on the generosity of physicians as well as pharmaceutical companies. Richey has a requirement for each. The dermatologist must conduct the sessions at a cancer center, not at his or her office, and the suppliers must provide full-size containers of products, not sample sizes.

Only the maker of a hairgrowth product balked at Richey’s demand for full sizes. Thus, he goes to Costco and buys $500 of minoxidil (which promotes hair growth) at a time.

“I’ll roll up to the checkout line,” he said, “and here I am with a full head of hair and a basket full of Rogaine, and guys will ask, ‘Buddy, does that stuff work that well?!’ “‘Yeah, I buy it by the cartload!”

Joking aside, Richey says he gets great satisfaction from his part in Brighter Days.

“I could give you a stack of thank-you notes that are just amazing. I guess that’s what keeps me going, the thank-you notes,” Richey said. “Some people, this really touched their heart, and I’m thrilled to be a part of that.” Ω

STUDENT-LED SUSTAINABLE FLIGHT

Students from Chico State’s Sustainable Manufacturing program won the grand prize at the Aerospace and Defense Manufacturing Conference and Exposition (AeroDef) in Long Beach on March 19.

The students created a manufacturing system to produce a redesigned aluminum cylinder head that allows piston engines in generalaviation light aircraft to run on unleaded, lower-octane fuels, according to a Chico State press release.

The students designed and built the sandcasting pattern, tooling, and full production system necessary to manufacture the cylinder head. Program coordinator Daren Otten said the degree of detail involved is what set his students’ work apart.

Chico State sustainable manufacturing students have taken home AeroDef’s top prize 14 times in recent years.

FRACKING REGULATIONS, PLEASE

California’s regulation of hydraulic fracturing— fracking—is deficient in light of technology advancements that could increase use of the oil-extraction method, a report finds.

Compiled by UC Berkeley’s Center for Law, Energy and the Environment, the report “identifies several areas where the state’s knowledge base and existing regulatory scheme are deficient,” as its authors were quoted as saying in a recent Los Angeles Times article.

As oil companies look to expand fracking activity and state regulators work to develop regulations, the report made several recommendations for state lawmakers, including requiring 30-day advance notice to state regulators before oil and gas companies begin fracking; full disclosure of chemicals involved; more stringent requirements for testing and monitoring well integrity; and a prohibition on injecting fracking fluids near earthquake fault lines.

RICE FIELDS MADE TOXIC?

The California Department of Pesticide Regulation (DPR) has proposed the widespread use of a chemical known to harm wildlife as a pesticide in rice fields throughout the Sacramento Valley.

Under the brand name Belay, the pesticide in question contains a neonicotinoid called clothianidin, which has been linked to the collapse of honey bee colonies and is highly toxic to aquatic animals, according to an Earthjustice press release. The proposition—which has drawn the ire of a coalition of environmental advocacy groups—would allow for both ground and aerial spraying.

If the proposition is finalized, Belay would become the first neonicontinoid approved for use in California’s rice fields, which are often planted in close proximity to almond and plum orchards that rely on honey bees for pollination.

“DPR is all too often a rubber stamp for the chemical industry, routinely approving dangerous pesticides we don’t need,” said Earthjustice attorney Greg Loarie.

“Mid- to late April, it’s pretty much a free-for-all. You can pretty much go for it, except for peppers and eggplants. … I always wait later for those”—until the very end of April, offered gardener Holly Nielsen, as she pulled up weeds on a recent sunny Thursday. Nielsen’s large garden at her Chapmantown house supplies most of her family’s vegetables and fruit for the year.

Berglund— who gardens about two-thirds of an acre near Lindo Channel—offered that it’s “typically safe to put in your tomatoes, your peppers, your eggplants,” by the end of April.

“My chard is in. My kale is in. You can put your cucumbers in,” said Berglund, standing near her 15 long raised garden beds. By May 1, she plants her squash and melon seeds.

“I tend to plant my corn [seed] a little bit later, because we tend to go on vacation in July and I don’t want to miss any of that

corn, and so I make sure it’s ripening in August,” Berglund explained. She has a separate corn field where, last year, she planted 17 25-foot-long rows of sweet corn and Floriani Red Flint, good for cornmeal.

“That one pound [of Floriani Red Flint seed] got me nearly sixty pounds of grain,” which she milled at home and used for baking. Berglund also chose her 60 varieties of fruit trees that produce fruit in harmony with her yearly July vacation, so she won’t miss a bite.

While it’s never a good idea to interfere with wild animals, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife released a public statement reminding us that it’s particularly important to leave young wildlife alone. Each year, state wildlife-rehabilitation centers receive around 400 to 500 fawns from well-meaning members of the public who assumed they were abandoned. However, fawns often remain in one spot for hours while their mother is feeding; seeing one alone doesn’t necessarily mean it has been abandoned. Before taking action, Butte County residents should call Bidwell Wildlife Rehab Center at 343-9004 for guidance if they encounter an abandoned or injured animal.

While she and Satyr had dabbled in smaller backyard gardens before, they are still new to gardening on such a big scale.

Experiments in sunny Chico, with high-quality soil in many neighborhoods, often mean success, though. All four gardeners point to the planting flexibility the city’s long summers provide—it’s almost never too late to start planting.

“There’s still a lot of stuff that can be direct-seeded. Cucumbers could go directly in the ground in the end of April. … Anything in the nightshade family, [like] tomatoes—they’d be a little late, but you’d still get some” to harvest, said Serra.

Nielsen raved about the Iraqi Abu Rawan tomato seeds that she bought from Petaluma-based Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds Co. “They’re crazy drought-tolerant,”

Berglund—whose tomatoes, which she started indoors from seed, were already in the ground, hardening off, in early April— loves the Jaune Flamme variety, which Redwood Seeds carries locally.

“It’s a delicious salad tomato, but it’s my absolute favorite for drying,” she said. “A small to midsize orange tomato, all you have to do is cut in half, add a little salt and thyme, and dry it.” Berglund will toss dried tomatoes into the food processor to make a powder, which works well in dishes as a substitute for tomato paste.

The Wellses got some of their tomato seeds from a variety pack from Baker Creek. They grew starts in a makeshift greenhouse made of a sliding glass door propped up horizontally against a sunny wall, with plastic hanging on the sides to keep the heat in during the cold nights. They plan on selecting two dozen of their starts to go into the ground by this week.

They’ll use bamboo teepees and twine to “tame” their tomatoes.

Tunnel visions Local experts assess the governor’s peripheral-tunnels plan

he Bay Delta Conservation Plan backed by Gov. Jerry Brown’s office is almost too enormous to comprehend. But it’s far and away the most significant infrastructure project going, so we have to try.

A pair of 35-mile-long tunnels, each 40 feet in diameter, would be buried 150 feet beneath the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta—imagine that—diverting immense amounts of water from the Sacramento River to the existing south-bound California Aqueduct.

But, astounding engineering project aside, it’s the range of potential statewide environmental, political, agricultural and economic impacts that truly boggles the mind. At an estimated cost of $14 billion and projected completion date of 2026, the tunnels ostensibly would protect California’s most vital water supply— which serves 25 million Californians and 3 million acres of farmland from San Jose to San Diego—from floods, sea-level rise and earthquakes.

The project would also include the attempted restoration of roughly 145,000 acres of Delta wetlands habitat critical to native wildlife, as ever-increasing demand for water has put several fish species on the verge of extinction and contributed to the decline of the commercial salmon-fishing industry.

Further, the plan would require diverting three major Sacramento-area roadways—highways 160, 4 and 12—to accommodate a decade of transporting heavy construction equipment at an additional cost of $265 million, according to The Sacramento Bee. “This is a huge project with so many moving parts,” said John Merz, former president of the Sacramento River Preservation Trust in Chico and longtime environmental advocate. Although there are countless factors to consider, Merz, along with several other local water experts, emphasized the importance of transparency as the state continues developing its proposal.

While a preliminary draft of the plan was released in March and a cost analysis and formal draft are expected in late April and July, respectively, there are several significant holes and gaps of information, Merz said.

“The devil’s in the details,” he explained, “and this is truly one of those situations. They are doing a whole lot of ‘Trust us. We’re going to do the right thing.’ But a lot of us are saying, ‘Hell no! This has got to be totally transparent, and we need to have as thorough a conversation as possible.’”

Merz believes that if the tunnels are built as currently planned, the state will continue to draw irresponsible amounts of water from the Sacramento River and the Delta to an even greater degree. Merz said he, along with many North State

water-conservation organizations, are skeptical of any promises made by Brown’s administration regarding a cap on water intake.

“We just don’t trust the state government,” he said. “They say they will limit the amount of water diverted, and we don’t believe them. I don’t know what the best answer is, but there might be a better answer than what the tunnels are presenting. I just don’t know if it has to be this grandiose.”

However, some believe the Delta is in such poor condi-

tion that doing nothing is simply not an option. Leo Winternitz, a senior adviser for the California Nature Conservancy’s water program, said, “We absolutely have to do something different” to address dwindling fish populations and maintain stable water supplies.

Winternitz explained that as endangered fish species in the Delta reach alarmingly low population levels, more stringent restrictions “of how you can move water and how you can export water” are enforced. The restrictions, in turn, contribute to unstable water supplies, Winternitz said.

“We’re in a lose-lose situation,” Winternitz said. “We have listed species at all-time lows, and an unreliable water supply, and looking into the future you don’t see anything changing. Particularly with climate change coming—or here, I should say—it just looks like things are going to get worse.”

But, like Merz, Winternitz also believes responsible management of how much water is drawn from the Sacramento River, and thus from the Delta, is critical to protecting the resource. “It comes down to how [the Delta] will be used, and who governs its use.

“It’s tremendously important this project be designed right, operated right and governed right,” Winternitz continued. “It’s paramount that the rules be established, the objectives—what they want to achieve with this—be clearly defined, and that there be very transparent paths to achieving those objectives.”

But Winternitz emphasized again that he believes the Delta and the health of its wildlife species will continue deteriorating if nothing is done.

“There’s the Chinese proverb: ‘Unless you change your direction, you’re apt to end up where you’re headed.’ These tunnels, whatever size they may be, represent an opportunity for change.”

Robyn DiFalco, executive director of the Butte

Environmental Council, expressed a sentiment echoed by many water-conscious North State organizations and residents—that diverting water south through the proposed tunnels for mostly agricultural purposes in the San Joaquin Valley is in the best interest of that area’s farmers, but not for the rest of California.

Though the San Joaquin Valley’s agricultural production is staggering—the area is responsible for the majority of the state’s agricultural exports, producing an estimated $30 billion annually—many have questioned the logic of moving water away from the North Sacramento Valley.

“It’s just not good policy for the state to invest so much money on behalf of watering farms in a desert,” she said.

“Growing things [in the San Joaquin Valley] is much more contentious than up here,” Merz agreed, pointing to the area’s over-worked farm soil. “We have great soil. Why are we moving the water?”

For Barbara Vlamis, executive director of AquAlliance, the San Joaquin Valley is a prime example of the negative consequences of excessive water consumption, a fate she fears for the Sacramento Valley.

“You don’t have to look too far away to see what devastation has been wrought,” Vlamis said. “The San Joaquin Valley has sunk many tens of feet because they’ve sucked so much groundwater out of it.

“California has a history of destroying its great watersheds,” DiFalco insisted, her voice rising. “It has destroyed Owens Valley, destroyed the San Joaquin River watershed, and now has all its sights on the Sacramento. We are the last great watershed left, and upending the hydrologic balance in this region will destroy California.” Ω

hico is currently home to at least 20 community gardens, where friends and neighbors gather together to work a shared piece of land.

Through her work with the GRUB Education Program and Cultivating Community North Valley, Stephanie Elliot has had a hand in helping several of these get started.

“We have every opportunity to grow our own food here,” she said. “We have great soil and great weather.

“There’s nothing like harvesting fresh food you helped grow, cooking it up in your kitchen and eating it,” she said.

“Not only does it taste amazing, but the experience is very empowering.”

The food, she said, is just part of the experience: “It’s also about the community you’re establishing, and the friendships and relationships you develop.”

Elliot offered her expertise on how to grow food together, breaking it down into simple steps.

1. Do your homework.

Elliot recommended looking at a list of active community gardens available on Cultivating Community’s website (cultivatingcommunitynv.org) and workshops offered there and through GRUB Education (grubchico.org).

“You can grow an astonishing amount, even in a 4-by-8 garden box,” she said, “so size doesn’t matter as much as creative use of space.”

It’s also important to research your location and check the soil to make sure there’s no history of contamination.

“The next step is gathering your workforce,” Elliot said. “Start calling friends and/or knocking on doors around the location. It’s a great way to meet the neighbors, find out who’s interested and draw people in.”

5: Get your hands dirty.

Prepare the land and plant your seeds. Encourage everyone to be as involved as they can every step of the way. Elliot cited several resources to help even the most inexperienced gardener get the space ready and keep things growing, from Internet sites to asking assistance from a master gardener. But mostly, she said, have fun with it and try new things.

“Gardening is, in my opinion, all a big experiment,” she said. “There are guidelines you can follow, but everyone’s goals are different and every location is completely unique, so don’t be afraid to try things and do what works for you.”

6. Enjoy the fruits of labor.

Depending on the season, which crops you choose to grow, and how much prep work the land needs, your newly formed community can begin harvesting within months, Elliot said.

She said each garden group distributes its food differently: “In some gardens each person has their own plot, some are communal where everyone works the same plot. We try to encourage people to make sure everyone gets something to take home, because it makes them feel good about the work they’ve done.”

She said figuring out what to do with the abundance of food produced is a more common problem than figuring out how to divide things up.

“At least one garden I know of gets together to process all of their excess, like they’ll make a bunch of pesto sauce out of their basil, and they do canning workshops when they have a lot of tomatoes,” she said. Ω 22 CN&R April 18, 2013

n the corner of Fourth and Wall streets in downtown Chico sits an innocuouslooking storefront housing a business that monitors fish populations, species and habitat in places ranging from Big Chico Creek to the Mekong River Basin in Southeast Asia.

Chico State grad Doug Demko created FISHBIO six years ago in the Stanislaus County town of Oakdale. He opened a Chico office about a year ago, he said, in part because it’s easier to hire and bring people to Chico than to Oakdale.

The company’s website describes FISHBIO as “a dedicated group of research scientists, engineers, and technicians that specialize in counting, tracking, and analyzing trends in fish and wildlife populations throughout the world. Our expert staff, technical capacity, and state-of-the-art equipment make us trailblazers in aquatic research.”

Demko is an engaging fellow who is not shy about sharing what he knows and what his company does.

Like so many others in this town, he came to Chico to attend college and never really left, though he spends most of his time these days on the road. “FISHBIO started six years ago, but I’ve been on the road probably 70 to 80 percent of the time,” he said during a recent interview in his office.

“A year ago we decided we should open an office in Chico. We have about 45 employees now and a big shop on a couple of acres in Oakdale that puts us right in the heart of the San Joaquin basin and near the Bay Delta.”

The company uses state-of-the art technology it manufactures in its Oakdale location to research and monitor fish populations, which are a measure of a river system’s environmental health. The company does a lot of work in the San Joaquin basin, he said, working for water companies, irrigation districts and the Army Corps of Engineers.

“We use high-technology like infrared scanners,” Demko said. “When the salmon are coming back we’ll build a fence along the river we’re studying and make them swim through an infrared scanner.”

Also used is a device called a “behavioral louver” to direct the fish into the scanner, which has a camera to photograph them as they swim past.

sex, their length, their girth and tell if they are hatchery or natural fish,” he said. “Then we monitor where they spawn with GPS-driven technology. We consider the depth and velocity of the water and the size of the nests they build.

Then we monitor the juveniles as they are going out.”

FISHBIO monitors survival rates, and when the fish get to the Delta they are caught and implanted with radio transmitters.

“We monitor them around the Delta,” he said. “Pumping water is obviously a big issue there, and it’s what drives a lot of fishery research these days.

“We’ve got projects on the Stanislaus, the Calaveras, the Tuolumne, the Merced and all the tributaries down there,” Demko continued.

“The work we do in the North State is more research driven that monitor driven. We are actually getting involved more locally and starting a program for Big Chico Creek Ecological Reserve to monitor the trout population there.”

built along the Mekong and compared it to where the United States was 50 years ago, when rivers and streams were altered without thought of subsequent environmental damage.

“We went there, opened up an office and hired a local fish biologist and 18 villagers to collect data for us,” he said. “We spent a couple years looking at what species people were harvesting, what they were doing with it—eating it, trading it, selling it.”

The information was based on 3,000 household surveys that gathered fundamental research that had never been done. The effort is paying off, as the company is now working in the region for the U.S. State Department.

“Last year before Secretary [of State Hillary] Clinton left office she visited the region. It was a priority toward the end of her administration to protect the people there. This is the most biodiverse fishery in the world. There are 850-plus known species. It’s probably the most productive fishery in the world, and it’s a food source.

Clinton recognized what a potential disaster it could be if the basin were developed without the appropriate planning.” Ω

t’s the only senior-level studio class in the Art Department that allows both art and design students to be a part of it, which is great, because it teaches them how important it is for both the artistic process and the design process to inform each other,” said Chico State interior-design instructor Rouben Mohiuddin of his Furniture Design and Fabrication class.

Mohiuddin developed and first taught it in the fall of 2009, after working as a sustainability-focused architect in New York City. Mohiuddin also heads up local firm Design SI, which— no surprise—is focused on sustainable design and construction.

Equally unsurprising is the fact that his furniture-design/fabrication class is strictly focused on “working with reclaimed, recycled materials,” as he explained in a recent interview. Instead of relegating abandoned logs and boards and other discarded pieces of wood to the fireplace or chipper, his students are turning them into such practical (and beautiful) items as benches and chairs.

“It’s an experimental, exploratory class. We ask ourselves, ‘What can we do with these recycled materials?’

“Since the Dada movement [of the early 20th century], we [artists/designers] have always used reclaimed things—found objects— in the making of art. In the end, with all these reclaimed things we’ve created new things.

“Sustainability, economy and efficiency are some of the positive implications that go hand in hand with using recycled or re-appropriated materials in design. No design can be considered good design unless it at least attempts to address some of these concerns.”

Some of the key points that Mohiuddin asked his students to keep in mind in regard to their designs are: • Use local available materials and resources whenever possible.

By way of explanation, Mohiuddin posed a question he might ask a student: “So you find a piece of claro walnut in Chico, and knowing that it grows only in Chico, what would you do with it?

The exhibit, which opens Friday, April 19, will showcase the work of local painter Waif Mullins along with many painters who work mostly with the pastel medium. “I’ve invited seven pastel artists, mainly from the Bay Area, that I have come to admire over 20 years to show with me,” said curator Mullins. “All are very accomplished and have won best of shows at pastel society exhibitions. I thought how exciting it would be to bring them together at Avenue 9 Gallery rather than to have their art diluted as part of large group shows.

“Pastel painting is unique,” he continued, “in that it uses pure pigment with just a little binder. That results in deep, brilliant colors. If magnified, pastel particles look crystalline. I painted ‘Beach Vendors, 24 CN&R April 18, 2013

Mullins, like the Impressionist painters, often paints scenes of leisure and human figures’ interactions in public settings such as parks or beaches. But the psychic nature of the figures and their encounters with one another, he says, are often less important to him in the construction of a picture than rendering the composition in realistic scale and creating atmosphere through the depiction of light. Mullins is quite skilled in the rendering of light—it ripples on water or shines on bodies, making them both material and luminous.

Pastel, Mullins also explained, has traditionally appealed to painters because of its very clear and bright visual qualities, but also because it is a very easy material to transport, making it a practical choice for painters who choose to work en plein air (“in the open air”), as many Impressionist painters did.

A number of artists in the show work in the pleinair style, and bring their talents for rendering landscapes and scenes drawn from observation to their work. They give us insight into how pastel creates drama through color, and with such apparent ease.

San Jose-based painter Terri Ford’s “Red Hot Summer Sky” shows how landscape drawn from the natural world, translated with the intensity of pastel paint, can make it over into an exceptionally moody and romantic scene, as a boat on water casts about in a hot red sky seemingly aflame.

Marbo Barnard’s works, such as “Green Horse,” come from the tradition of still life painting, but the Japanese-born artist’s simple studies are granted an eerie touch by the dramatic nature of the pastel’s vivid, almost unreal, coloring.

The Waif Mullins Invitational offers Chico’s art audience a unique chance to see the medium of pastel at play on the canvas up close, and view works by a gifted collection of artists devoted to recognizing and using its special, vibrant properties. Ω

Vicksburg Blues Butch Thompson & Pat Donohue Red House Records Pianist/clarinetist Butch Thompson and guitarist Pat Donohue are certainly no strangers to fans of the radio program A Prairie Home Companion, where they’ve entertained listeners for several decades.

Now—at long last—they’ve teamed up to make their first record together, and it’s a beauty. Their collaborative effort harks back to the recordings made in the ’20s and ’30s by pianist Leroy Carr and guitarist Scrapper Blackwell, and among the 19 selections are four of Carr’s compositions, including “How Long Blues,” his most famous piece. Taken at a slow pace, Thompson’s piano introduction leads into Donohue’s mournful singing, “How long, how long, has that evenin’ train been gone?” as he bemoans his baby’s departure. The Grammy-winning guitarist is a finger-picking champ, and his talent is very much on display in his solo performance of his own “Better Days,” a peppy piece very much in keeping with the tradition they both celebrate here. As a reminder of the time limit imposed by the 78 rpm format of the original recordings, all but four of the songs hover around the three-minute mark, with Thompson’s delicate rendition of Jelly Roll Morton’s “219 Blues” one of the exceptions. This is a striking album that celebrates the music of some of the progenitors of the blues.

As the collisions destroy the pegs and others respawn, the board is constantly changing while special pegs carry enhancements such as teleporters, multi-balls and score and multiplier bonuses. This adds just enough order to the unpredictable trajectory to suggest a skillful strategy can change the ball’s descent. At the bottom of the board, the balls land in a slot with a reward—currency, extra balls, puzzle pieces, prizes or special events—or an evil slime creature that wreaks havoc on your high score. It’s a lot going on for a game centered on dropping a ball, but that’s the beauty of it—there’s always a goal or prize just out of reach. Incentivized gameplay isn’t new but Paplinko incentivizes the incentives—collecting a set of prizes or completing a puzzle unlocks additional bonuses and collectibles. Though the free game uses microtransactions, it also allows players to trade ingame currency for additional balls if they don’t want to wait for the ticking clock to refill their supply. Paplinko is fun, colorful, addictive and a reminder that the simplicity in casual games can be well designed and executed.

Old Yellow Moon Emmylou Harris and Rodney Crowell Nonesuch For those of us who’ve been with Emmylou Harris from those long-ago days when she was lending vocal support to Gram Parsons, any new recording she puts out is warmly anticipated. But when such an album comes with the bonus of shared vocals with Rodney Crowell, it bodes well for the prospect of happy listening. And there’s an abundance of happy listening to be had on Old Yellow Moon, along with a little somber reflection about the fleet passage of time. For listeners of a certain vintage, aging along with our musical icons, a song like Matraca Berg’s “Back When We Were Beautiful” is bound to jerk a tear or two, especially if heard while looking through a CD booklet that includes a picture of Harris and Crowell facing the setting sun. Along with the stellar vocals and the down-pat instrumental support, there’s a bounty of good songwriting on this album, from Kris Kristofferson’s “Chase the Feeling,” to Patty Scialfa’s “Spanish Dancer,” Roger Miller’s “Invitation to the Blues,” and Crowell’s own “Open Season on My Heart.” Some might say it takes a lifetime to make an album this good, but Harris and Crowell have been doing it from the git-go. Bless ’em for it.

MOST VALUABLE SEASON I’m too depressed about the Sacramento Kings’ probable relocation to Seattle to care about the NBA’s upcoming awards announcements. Instead, in advance of the award-giving-out that will go down at this coming weekend’s CAMMIES Finale/Awards Show (Saturday, April 20, 2-7 p.m.) at the Chico Women’s Club, I’m going to hand out a few personal, unofficial, entirely biased individual awards to the performers of the recently completed three-day season of music known as the CAMMIES Music Festival: • Most valuable player: Doug Stein, vocalist for nominees Swamp Zen and Low Flying Birds. Like a Jim Morrison who actually smiles at the audience, the raspy roadhouse rambler was born to be on a stage.

• Rookies of the year: Frankie Doppler’s Nuclear Sunrise. It’s no small feat to stand out during the 17-band punk showcase, but the ska-friendly teens of FDNS are the most energetic (and possibly most creatively dynamic) band in Chico.

CAMMIES MVP: Doug Stein

• Most improved player: TyBox. The dreadheaded MC has always had a smooth flow, but over the four years he’s been nominated in the Best Rap category, he’s cultivated an impressive repertoire of dynamics, breaking up his raps with well-timed stops and shifts in delivery that make him even more of a force at the mic.

• Citizenship award: Bow-tie Jesse. The Café Coda bartender/barista/ waiter is the consummate host, making every band member, patron and promoter feel like a guest in his own home. He truly cares that the venue present the best possible show every night (and the three CAMMIES shows there were the best).

• Sixth man of the year: The soundpeople. This town is lucky to have these friendly pros: Tyler at Café Coda; Ron at LaSalles; Justin, Daniel, Matt, Isaac and Shayne at Lost on Main/DownLo; Pyrate Punx at Monstros; that nice young guy at The Maltese; and BassMint at Peeking.

• Defensive players of the year: Chico Area Pyrate Punx. After band 14 of 17 at the punk showcase at Monstros, the police showed up after a noise complaint and the Pyrates had to shut the show down or else face getting a fine. The officers were nice about things, which says a lot about the respect the Pyrate Punx garner for being so reasonable and smart when dealing with situations that might look chaotic to outsiders. Here’s hoping the authorities continue to recognize that these consistent, well-managed Monstros punk shows that always end by 11 p.m. are run by community-minded people. They deserve the benefit of the opportunity to just turn things down rather than live under the cloud of the Chico noise ordinance, wondering if every show they have will be treated like a college party and fined without future warnings. That would likely spell the end of the vital local venue.

BEST BAND THAT I CAN’T TALK ABOUT TOO MUCH I love the Michelin Embers. But since the band’s ukulelist Ken Smith and CN&R staff writer is also a co-worker I can’t write a proper review because of my pesky journalistic ethics. But while you might not be able to completely trust my objectivity if I were to describe their unique blend of uke, slide guitar, gut bucket, and vocalist Johnny Shanker’s twangy voice and dark, poetic lyrics as being reminiscent of an old-time hillbilly hoedown next to a raging tire fire by the side of a dusty country road, there is one completely unbiased fact you can trust: I have listened to the band’s debut CD, Talapachie, a half-dozen times over the last 24 hours. And even though I’ll be working on the CAMMIES for 12 hours straight this coming Saturday, I am definitely going to save enough energy for Michelin Embers’ CD-release party at The Maltese later that same night. Believe that.

in pungent detail, of course, but Helgeland also gives special and incisive attention to a number of other powerfully dramatic events that were part of Robinson’s historic rookie year—the incipient revolts of Southern-born players on National League teams, including the Dodgers; the viciously racist provocations of Phillies Manager Ben Chapman; Southernborn teammate Pee Wee Reese giving Robinson a fraternal welcome in front of a hostile crowd at Cincinnati’s Crosley Field.

Helgeland gives considerable attention to Robinson’s fraught relationships with his own Brooklyn teammates. Aging star pitcher Kirby Higbe and one-time batting champion Dixie Walker, both from the Deep South, are openly hostile (Rickey’s response was to trade both of them to the last-place Pirates). Alabama-born catcher Bobby Bragan, a future major-league manager, signs on with the rebels at first, then changes his mind, at least partly in response to Robinson’s on-field performance in the face of Chapman’s relentless slurs.

Among Dodger teammates, Reese is the most eloquent and influential of Robinson’s supporters, but Helgeland also singles out pitcher Ralph Branca, an Italian-American New Yorker whose seemingly natural egalitarianism leads him to bond with Robinson early on, and Alabama-born infielder Eddie Stanky, also a future major-league manager, who sides with Robinson more as a matter of fiercely competitive honor than out of any moral or socio-political principle.

Evil Dead

A group of idiotic but attractive kids arrive at a spooky cabin in the woods. The brainy one reads an incantation from an ominous book. Spooky noises.

Then …. as this remake parallels and tops the original, the two dudes still get off light and now the three ladies are former prom queens. Two of the young women are given a couple of lines so they won’t be mistaken for props. The other one is given a subplot that becomes irrelevant the moment the blood hits the fan. Otherwise it’s lazy character development that doesn’t offer anything but the bare minimum to set these props to slaughter. The film does look good though as it evokes the pus-’n’-blood palette of recent French and Spanish horror and douses it with the cartoon excess of ’90s Japanese gorgasms. On the Road

Walter Salles’ plush-looking film version of the iconic Jack Kerouac novel plays heavily on the roman à clef angle—Sal Paradise = Kerouac, Dean Moriarty = Neal Cassady, Carlo Marx = Allen Ginsberg, etc. That works nicely enough with the film’s meticulous approach to period décor (late-40s), but Salles’ starry-eyed classics-illustrated direction and screenwriter Juan Rivera’s blandly conventional script leave a void that even a deep, talented cast can’t fill. Garrett Hedlund does some justice to the outlaw flamboyance of Moriarty/Cassady, but the Salles/ Rivera version of the character is more reckless vagabond than Kerouac-style holy madman. Worse yet, the film’s lame conception of Paradise/Kerouac misses Kerouac territory altogether. Tom Sturridge (Marx/Ginsberg) and Viggo Mortensen (Bull Lee/ William S. Burroughs) are the lone standouts of character and performance. Pageant Theatre.

Oz the Great and Powerful

It’s been 74 years since the release of The Wizard of Oz, and director Sam Raimi (Spiderman) and company are exploring its title character, preDorothy and gang. Struggling magician/con-artist/ womanizer Oscar “Oz” Diggs (James Franco) isn’t living up to his “great” potential, working the circus scene in Podunk, Kansas. So when a tornado sweeps him away to the land of Oz, where the inhabitants believe that he’s their awaited wizard, he goes with it. With the help of Glinda The Good Witch (a sappy Michelle Williams), this amateur hero attempts to save the citizens of Emerald City from the wicked sister witches (Rachel Weisz and Mila Kunis).

There’s plenty of visual oohing and ahhing to be had, but the fun stops there. The dialogue falls flat and the mediocre acting does little to save it. Keep traveling down that yellow brick road. Cinemark 14.

In The Drunken Botanist: The Plants That Create the World’s Best Drinks, Amy Stewart leaves this dissension behind and takes libations back to their roots on a journey that’s as refreshing as a mint julep on a hot day. By examining more than 150 well-known and obscure ingredients that go into alcohol and cocktails from a botanical perspective, Stewart—author of bestseller Wicked Plants—simultaneously embraces tradition and innovation in search of a great cocktail.

The Eureka-based author breaks the book down into three sections that roughly follow the farm-tococktail process—fermentation and distillation, infusion, and mixers and garnishes. It all begins with the plants we associate with the creation of alcohol, such as potatoes, wheat and corn, but deeper into the book, the real fun begins as the ingredients become more obscure.

Agave and grapes give way to monkey puzzle, bison grass, sassafras and yuzu. With each ingredient, Stewart lays out a combination of botanical, cultural, historical, gardening and culinary tidbits of information that form the perfect combination of brevity and lesserknown facts for cocktail party conversation. And she maintains a balance between drunken revelry and botanical order by making the natural world and Latin etymology approachable while ensuring a fascinating or humorous anecdote is never far off.

began as sweet pomegranate syrup taking its name from the French word for pomegranate, grenade—a word also given to the handheld explosive that shares the size and shape of the fruit.

Today, we know grenadine as artificial viscous red syrup, but Stewart urges us to scour specialty shops for pomegranate-based grenadine or, better yet, make our own batch at home with the included recipe. It’s in instances such as these that Stewart mends the fences between traditional and modern cocktail culture—modern mixologists and artisan distillers as well as 18th-century Parisians and New World settlers agree that the key to an exceptional drink is exceptional ingredients.

While the book contains more than 50 recipes, many of the ingredients are uncommon. At first, when you’re scanning for a drink to mix up and enjoy while diving into the book, it’s off-putting to stumble upon recipe after recipe reliant upon crème de violette, elderflowers, sorghum syrup, or other ingredients that may be readily available at specialty shops or online, but probably won’t be found in your liquor cabinet.

However, this is a blessing in disguise because The Drunken Botanist doesn’t contain re-hashed recipes for Tequila Sunrise, Sex on the Beach or Jägerbombs. Instead, we’re challenged with unique flavors in cocktails you won’t find at Applebee’s, such as The Douglas Expedition (see recipe), which includes a Douglas fir eau de vie.

Accompanying the recipe is an

anecdote on how McCarthy’s Clear Creek Distillery in Oregon uses an infusion of buds from the Douglas fir to create the green, forest-scented spirit.

Throughout the book, Stewart infuses the anecdotes, recipes and historical information with a voice that loves the natural world and good booze. Neither the author nor the book buy into theatricalities behind the bar—referencing the practice of lighting sambuca on fire, Stewart chides drinkers to just, “sip it like an adult.” The result is a book that emulates the plants and drinks it honors— unique, colorful, intriguing and something you want to share with guests at your next party.

Anarchy on the uke Little orchestra makes big sounds on the “bonsai guitar”

The orchestra is dedicated to smashing any preconceived notions the uninitiated may have about the instrument, and the members accomplish this through a fantastic mix of humor, excellent musicianship, and an amazing repertoire of songs spanning decades and styles.

For example, a quick sampling of the orchestra’s set list that evening includes such varied pieces as the aforementioned punk anthem, Prince’s “Kiss,” David Bowie’s “Life on Mars?,” Adele’s “Rolling in the Deep” and The Beverly Hillbillies theme song.

Not only are the six men and two women who make up the orchestra consummate musicians, but they’re also all great singers, trading lead vocals and adding spot-on background harmonies. Some of the best moments were provided when the group’s two female members, Hester Goodman and Kitty Lux, took lead vocal duties for Lou Reed’s “Satellite of

Love” and the creepy-as-hell Nancy Sinatra classic “Bang Bang.”

The orchestra generally avoids tunes commonly associated with the ukulele, but broke this rule for the evening when inspired by Sonic Ukes—a group of local ukulelists who performed in the foyer before the show—to play “Tiptoe through the Tulips,” originally written in 1929 but re-injected into the American psyche by Tiny Tim in 1968.

A definite crowd favorite was the “Theme from Shaft,” which the orchestra turned into a tale partly about the exploits of a badass private dick—as per Isaac Hayes’ intention—and partly about 1800s British musicologist Cecil Sharp. This is a prime example of the players’ offbeat sense of humor, which is (trust me) a lot funnier when they do it than when a reviewer tries to explain it.

In fact, the group’s antics and banter were as funny as the music was well-played, and the orchestra is as much a comedy troupe as it is a band of crack musicians. Some of the best moments came when musicianship and ludicrous humor collided, as when at least six of the members joined in, one by one, to play the same ukulele all at once.

The Ukulele Orchestra didn’t just smash through genres over the course of the evening, but sometimes in the course of a single song. During the first encore, the members bickered over which song to play—a classical piece by George Frideric Handel or something by Frank Sinatra, Roberta Flack, Gloria Gaynor or something else. So, without changing the chord progression, they did them all—Handel, “Fly Me to the Moon,” “Killing Me Softly,” “I Will Survive,” plus “The Theme from Love Story” and “Hotel California.” Different members sang a verse from each separate piece individually, added them on top of each other into a glorious cacophony the second time through.

As the orchestra cheekily noted, its CDs are available online, but a great deal of the group’s catalog can be found for free on YouTube. Whether you think you like ukuleles or not, these performers are worth checking out. Ω

writer Oliver Burkeman has some advice that would be helpful for you Aries folks to hear right now: “When you assume your current preferences won’t alter, you’ll make bad decisions: embarking on a career or marriage, say, not with a view to its durability, but solely based on how it makes you feel now.” I am most definitely not predicting that you are about to make the kind of bad decision Burkeman refers to. I’m sure my warning here in this horoscope will derail any temptation you might have to make shortsighted moves.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20): I’m happy to report that help from the invisible world is available to you right now. Of course, you won’t be able to use it, let alone tune in to it, if you don’t believe there is any such thing as help from the invisible world. So, if you are the type of person who is very sure that reality consists of nothing more than what your senses reveal, I suggest that you temporarily suspend that belief. And if you are someone who has had direct experiences with blessings that come from the unseen realm, be aware that the imminent delivery is quite different from those you have known in the past.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20): In her book

A Monster’s Notes, Laurie Sheck describes the nuances of the term “ghost” in the German language. A mediocre wine may be called unghostly, she says. A witty, lively person is “Rich in Ghostliness,” whereas a dull, blank type “has no ghost in him.” In this spirit, Gemini, I suspect you will have some pretty fine ghostliness working for you in the coming weeks. And there’s a good chance that part of your extra-special mojo will arise from your creative engagement with energies that resemble the more traditional definition of “ghost.”

CANCER (June 21-July 22): A one-

minute video commercial for The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas luxury resort shows an elegant woman at a sumptuous feast. She’s eagerly holding her dinner plate up to her face so she can lick it clean of its last delicious taste. The scene shifts to a well-dressed man who’s down on all fours serving as a chair for a chic woman. She applies her makeup while gazing into the shiny mirrorlike surface of a high-heeled shoe. New scene: An 80-year-old woman pats the butt of a handsome young stud with whom she’s slow dancing. At the end of the ad, a catchphrase appears: “Just the right amount of wrong.” I say, let that be your mantra in the coming week, Cancerian.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): Albert Einstein

published his general theory of relativity in 1916. It had radical implications for the field of theoretical physics but remained an unproven concept until 1919. Then, a British physicist verified its accuracy with evidence gathered during a solar eclipse. The Times newspaper in London announced the event with the headline “Revolution in Science: New Theory of the Universe, Newtonian Theories Overthrown.” Not wanting to be left behind, The New York Times assigned one of its own journalists to cover the revolution. Unfortunately, the person they sent was a sports reporter whose specialty was golf. His article was less than illuminating.

The moral of the story, as far as you’re concerned, Leo: When big developments are underway, show up at full strength, with all your powers engaged.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): “Never to get

lost is not to live,” writes Rebecca Solnit in her book A Field Guide to Getting Lost. In fact, she says that not knowing how to get lost is unhealthy. These are useful ideas to consider right now, Virgo. It will probably do you good to get at least semilost. As you wander around without a map or compass, I bet you will stumble upon important teachings. At the same time, I hope you will put some thought into how you’re going to get lost. Don’t just leave it to chance. Make sure there’s a method in your madness.

language, “low man on the totem pole” is an idiom that refers to a person who has the worst job or the least status. He or she is considered to be at the low end of the hierarchy. But it’s an incorrect metaphor. The creators of the original totem poles were indigenous Native American tribes of the Pacific Northwest, and for them the figure at the bottom of the pole was the most important one. I foresee the possibility of a similar situation arising in your sphere, Libra. Be alert for a misapprehension that needs to be righted. It may be the case that what’s last should actually be first.

Something that has been beneath or behind “more important” matters should perhaps get higher priority.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): In his book Karmic Traces, Eliot Weinberger describes the life story of naked mole rats. They’re animals that never leave their underground tunnels. Normally, you Scorpios have nothing in common with them. But in the coming days, I’m hoping there will be one resemblance. According to Weinberger, the naked mole rats “change direction by somersaulting.” Metaphorically speaking, I think this would be an excellent strategy for you.

There’s no need to mope cautiously as you alter your course. No need to be lackadaisical and fitful and full of doubts. Just spring into action with a cheery bounce, and move on with a renewed sense of purpose.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21):

The famous philosopher John Searle unleashed a witty dig about the famous philosopher Jacques Derrida, saying he is “the sort of philosopher who gives bullshit a bad name.” One of your fun assignments in the coming week, Sagittarius, is to do the opposite of what Derrida’s work does. In other words, give bullshit a good name.

How? Well, you could engage in creative verbal expressions that boost morale and propagate delight and lubricate worthwhile connections. Make up noble fictions that are more accurate and useful that the literal truth. Spread uplifting gossip that heals and invigorates.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): “The

ideal piano player … is the one who wants to be the piano,” says a character in Thomas Bernhard’s novel The Loser. He continues: “I say to myself every day when I wake up, I want to be the Steinway ... I want to be the Steinway itself.” Your assignment, Capricorn, is to apply this attitude to your own personal situation. In other words, merge with the tool you want to master.

Immerse yourself in the skill you’re working to perfect—disappear into it. In your imagination, become completely united with the thing or person or experience you desire.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): “The

trouble with our age is that it is all signpost and no destination,” said writer Louis Kronenberger. I’m concerned that you may have fallen under the sway of this kind of myopia, Aquarius. A steady stream of useful tips and clues has been appearing, but you’re missing some of them. Your longrange goals aren’t sufficiently clear, so you don’t always recognize the significance of new revelations. Here’s the cure: In your imagination, create a vivid picture of your next big destination.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): A group of

bicyclists in Southern California challenged a blogger to a race. They said they could cover the 38.4 miles from North Hollywood to Long Beach faster on their bikes than the blogger could get there by plane. As it turned out, they were right. Their trip took an hour and 34 minutes. As for the blogger, he had to drive to the airport, wait for the plane to depart, fly to a different airport, then catch a cab to the designated destination. He arrived about an hour after the cyclists.

Amanda Sanchez is the model of a young entrepreneur—the 27-year-old divorced mother of two young sons owns and operates Eco In Chico Baby’s Boutique, a shop that sells “green” babies’ and children’s items. “It’s a friendly place where you can shop with your little ones,” Sanchez said of the almost 4-year-old business, which sports a cheery bright-green and white interior. The business carries many locally made items, and has been a launching point for several area entrepreneurs. A personable young woman with vivid dark eyes, Sanchez worked in the restaurant and retail industries as a teenager, married at 19, had her first child at 20, and then provided foster care for infants for four years until deciding to open a business. “It’s really just a dream come true,” she said. Why did you decide to open a “green” store?

I grew up shopping with my mom in antique and second-hand shops, and I always dreamed of owning my own baby store. When I was a stay-at-home mom, I was into the other used baby [clothes] stores. And there was something I wanted to do a little differently; I wanted to be able to offer the new along with the locally made and used. I always saw a way of how I wanted to do it.

What kinds of products do you offer?

I spend a lot of time researching product background. Pretty much everything in the store is locally made, recycled, or made in the

U.S. I have around 65 local vendors. A number of them have been launched from my store and now have products on sites such as Zulily.com. It started off with two local vendors, and it just grew! I like that I can offer the little unique things that somebody’s made and that people will remember.

What are a few of those items?

Hand-made wooden toys, girls’ dresses made from vintage tablecloths, birthday hats and shirts, capes and crowns.

What else do you sell?

I have both boys’ and girls’ rooms full of gently used clothing. As your baby grows, you can get store credit for larger-size items. I have used baby gear, such as strollers, around seven lines of cloth diapers. And much more!

Books For some months I’ve been what museums call de-acquisitioning generally, and particularly books. Then last week while my car was being smogtested I wandered into ARC during a book sale, and my resolve dissolved. I at least thought up good reasons for each book it turned out I had to have.

The first was Sex, Death, and Fly-Fishing by John Gierach. Although I’m interested in sex and death, it was fly-fishing that caught my eye because a friend of mine in Minnesota is a fly fisherman and I thought I’d send it to him. Gifts don’t count against de-acquisitioning.

Then I saw West Coast Seafood: The Complete Cookbook by Jay Harlow. I got this one because I’ve been allergic to fish all my life, except I’m apparently not allergic anymore. A few months ago friends took me to eat sushi, and since at the time I thought a lifethreatening meal a sensible thing to have, I went. It was delicious and not a bit fatal. I look forward to eating lots of fish, and a seafood cookbook seemed a prudent investment. That’s what I told myself.

I often see several young men around the estate in the course of a day, and I picked up two titles that I planned to leave in plain view. Although I haven’t read either book, I’ve read others by those authors and

feel confident that a young man can find something of value or use in both The Choice by Og Mandino and How to Stop Worrying and Start Living by Dale Carnegie.

While subject matter is usually what attracts me, there are a handful of writers whose work I read no matter what they’re writing about. Some actors are always worth watching, and some writers are always worth reading. Although Family by Ian Frazier is about his family, in whom I have no interest whatsoever, I’ve read enough of his work, including the terrific Great Plains, that I fully expect it to at least entertain, probably interest, and perhaps engross me. This is a clear violation of the de-acquisitioning mandate, so I’ll give away another book to take up the slack.

Pilgrims by Garrison Keillor is entirely irresistible because I haven’t read it, and I read whatever Garrison Keillor writes. That’s the way it is.

A few years I professed to have no guilty pleasures, and I didn’t. Now I have the novels of John Sandford, who writes crime fiction, including Night Prey, which made me buy it. Overall, I don’t think that crime fiction is likely to help me achieve enlightenment or peace on Earth, and so I suppose I should avoid it, but I’ve read a lot of crime fiction, and Sandford is a master. As usual, peace will have to wait.
