Spotlight on ‘dark money’ Want to know just how dark “dark money” can be? Consider

individuals in our community and not simply those of my own economic and social class. In the story the gate is a threshold of connection between birds of different feathers.

At the Jesus Center the gate is the dining room counter over which food is passed from volunteers to the low-income poor, homeless people, parolees, those afflicted with mental illness, unemployed breadwinners and past and present substance abusers. A community gate can be the space outside or inside a store, a sideby walk, a school or neighborhood, or even Bill Such the City Council chambers. Replicating the rich man’s behavior is easy: Avoid eye contact with anyone looking indigent or holding a cardboard sign; stereotype “the homeless” as “losers” intent on begging for handouts; and create loitering ordinances to keep “them” moving on. However, such behavior diminishes our humanity.

consistently found sleeping around downtown premises. His main idea: Establish a “fast-track” system of social workers liaising with the police to present sleepers with alternatives immediately available to change their circumstances.

Sherry Morgado, director of Chico’s Housing and Neighborhood Services, heads a committee exploring an “alternative shelter” idea that would give anyone the choice to stay overnight in a secure facility.

I advocated a trial project to the DCBA of employing a three-man team inviting people sleeping downtown to breakfast and community resources at the Jesus Center. The team would clean up any mess outside businesses.

Chico’s area interfaith group is discussing setting up downtown goodwill ambassadors, and a group of Chico Christian ministers is exploring a concept with good results affecting crime statistics in Britain. Called Street Pastors, it consists of teams of four people walking violence-prone areas between 10 p.m. and 3 a.m. on Friday and Saturday nights to care, listen and dialogue with citizens.

Of course, organizational structures must be in place using the expertise of institutions like Behavioral Health, Enloe Hospital, Skyway House and the Salvation Army.

Those experiencing homelessness or suffering from substance abuse must not be left outside of our community gate. Ω

the $11 million in mystery money spent to defeat Gov. Jerry Brown’s tax measure, Proposition 30, and to support the anti-union Proposition 32.

The first we knew of this money was when we learned a shadowy Arizona-based nonprofit called Americans for Responsible Leadership had funneled it to another nonprofit, the Small Business Action Committee, that was running campaigns against Prop. 30 and for Prop. 32. But who was funding ARL? The state’s Fair Political Practices Commission filed suit to find out, only to be told that ARL’s money came from another pair of nonprofits, beginning with Americans for Job Security, based in Alexandria, Va., and then being passed on to the Center to Protect Patient Rights, based in Phoenix.

Americans for Job Security was founded in 1997 by two Republican strategists who formed Crossroads Media, which handles advertising for American Crossroads, Karl Rove’s super PAC. And the Center to Protect Patient Rights is run by Sean Noble, an operative of the billionaire far-right Koch brothers.

California is not the only state where these outfits operate. But it’s the first state to force these kinds of revelations. Although we still don’t know who the individual donors are, we do know that the CPPR has admitted to channeling campaign cash into the state, which is illegal. As Ann Ravel, chairwoman of the FPPC, said, “They admitted to money laundering.”

This is what the U.S. Supreme Court has wrought with its Citizens United decision—super-rich donors like the Koch brothers operating outside public view by using shadowy nonprofit advocacy groups to channel dark money to be used to attack their political enemies.

The good news is that California—credit the FPPC and Attorney General Kamala Harris, in particular—is fighting back. We’d like to see criminal charges brought against the money launderers. That would make these dark donors think twice before sending more mystery money to our state. Ω

Sandy’s telling lesson There are many lessons to be learned from Hurricane Sandy—

about climate change, about the ability of unanticipated events to change the dynamic of a presidential campaign.

Perhaps the most telling lesson, however, has to do with the role of government in people’s lives. When Mother Nature asserts her power and push comes to shove, people want government to come to the rescue.

The common view of the hurricane was that it bolstered President Obama’s re-election odds by giving credence to his faith in government and undercut Mitt Romney’s anti-government stance that led him to state, during the primary, that FEMA’s role should be returned to the states.

But Romney was simply pandering to his far-right base, and even it doesn’t really want to get rid of FEMA. Those Tea Party types may say they want to cut the size of government, but what they really mean is that they want to cut the money the guy next door is getting. When they need to be rescued during a hurricane, they want FEMA to be there.

This is true of the rich as well as the poor. As Matt Taibbi points out in Rolling Stone, nobody lives off the government more than Mitt Romney’s wealthy supporters, whether it be via subsidies (like Doug LaMalfa), bailouts, tax breaks, selective regulation or “carefully carved-out protections from competition” like Medicare’s ban on price negotiation that benefits Big Pharma.

These are the very people who don’t want to pay taxes, but want their airplanes inspected, their sea walls solid and their food safe to eat. What Sandy showed is that even they have to admit they need government. Ω

Election Day notes There was a line out the door Tuesday morning at the Church of Democracy, which is what I call the back building at Grace Community Church, where I do my voting. The line moved fast, though, and within five minutes I was in my booth, honoring James Madison and the other visionaries who laid the groundwork for what the American people were doing that day.

I was thankful I wasn’t in Ohio or Florida or one of the other states where people had to wait hours to vote because Republican election officials were making it hard to do so.

I like going to the polls. I’d do mail-in if it were the only way to vote or I were on my deathbed, but as long as Americans go to the polls on Election Day and I’m still vertical, I’ll be there too. As I left the Church of Democracy, I took a look back, enjoying the sight of so many people exercising their fundamental right to choose their leaders and chart a course toward the future.

Endorsement freeze-out: Last week I got an email from Chicoan Roger Beadle complaining that, when he’d written an email rebuttal to the Enterprise-Record’s editorial endorsement of Mitt Romney for president, he’d been told it wouldn’t be published because it came in after the paper’s deadline.

I emailed E-R Editor David Little asking him about this.

He forwarded me his response to Beadle: “I’m sorry, but our deadline on election-related letters was Friday [Oct. 26]. We received so many that we had to set a cutoff date in order to get them all in before the election. We had a notice about the deadline on the editorial page last week.”

OK, but the paper published four endorsements—for state Senate, Congress, Oroville City Council and U.S. president—between Oct. 26 and Oct. 30. E-R readers couldn’t respond to any of them.

I emailed Little again, suggesting he make his endorsements earlier, to give people time to comment on them.

His one-sentence response: “Thanks for the advice.” I could almost hear his teeth grinding.

Then, on Sunday, Nov. 4, Little made an exception, publishing a fierce letter from Democratic congressional candidate Jim Reed countering the E-R’s endorsement of his Republican opponent, Doug LaMalfa, and accusing it of making an “erroneous and unmerited assessment” of Reed’s campaign.

Little was wise to publish Reed’s letter. Not to do so would have opened him up to a charge of gross unfairness.

But what about all the other people, like Roger Beadle, for whom exceptions were not made?

Remembering Midge: Like many people, I was saddened to learn of the passing of the wonderful Mercedes “Midge” Frontera Gilbert, who died Oct. 22 at the age of 76. For a number of years Midge and her husband, James Gilbert, were the first family of local theater, he as the gifted set designer for Chico State productions, she as a teacher and director, especially of children’s theater. Christian Science healing: another view Re “Healing through prayer” (Healthlines, by Christine G.K. LaPado-Breglia, Nov. 1): I was raised a Christian Scientist from birth until the scales dropped from my eyes during my college years. In retrospect, I never heard of a CS healing that couldn’t be explained, usually much more believably, by other reasons.

My sister died at the age of 9 of pneumonia because my devout parents relied solely on CS prayer, which is the only way a practitioner (a paid CS healer) will agree to pray for the afflicted.

My best friend’s sister relied on CS instead of medical care and died a horribly painful death from cancer at the age of 56.

CS does not allow for palliative care either.

I am of course happy that the subject of the story is free of cancer, but my experience with CS makes me question whether she ever had it in the first place. CS anecdotes like this one are often full of misrepresentations and wishful recall.

But assuming the situation was as she describes, a reasonable reader should know that remission or misdiagnosis are far more likely explanations for the “healing.” At some point in the future, this woman may need medical intervention again (indeed, it is odd that she says the doctors could not help her inasmuch as they brought her through the self-induced coma), and I hope she does not refuse it.

Firefighters backed Schindelbeck?

I find it perplexing that the Chico Firefighters Association has seen fit to endorse local Tea Party activist Toby Schindelbeck for the Chico City Council, especially when two of the planks on the official Tea Party Platform are as follows: “Labor unions have no place in the public sector” and “No union shall be allowed to control or directly influence public policy.”

Since when does a professional labor union endorse a candidate who is intent on dismembering that same union? Someone on the Chico firefighters’ candidate interview committee apparently neglected to do his or her homework on Schindelbeck’s background check.

‘The holocaust of animal suffering’ Re “What’s the beef?” (Newslines, by Ken Smith, Nov. 1): Dean Jennifer Ryder Fox claims that the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) has an anti-agriculture-industry agenda. According to the USDA, 1.02 billion cattle, 1.2 billion pigs, and 40 billion chickens are raised for food worldwide. Of this total, over 90 percent are raised in “concentrated animal feeding operations,” or “factory farms.”

Cattle raised for beef are castrated, dehorned and branded, all without anesthesia. Sows live out most of their short miserable lives in individual gestation crates. Male piglets have their testicles removed, their tails and ears docked, and their teeth clipped, all without anesthesia. Laying hens live out their lives crammed into tiny battery cages. To prevent stress-induced aggression caused by overcrowding (such as pecking cage mates to death), baby chicks have the ends of their beaks cut off with hot blades (a process known as debeaking), without anesthesia.

The views of HSUS merely reflect the proper moral and rather uncontroversial view shared by most of our fellow citizens— namely, that animals should not be made to suffer such cruelty. If the anti-cruelty agenda of HSUS turns out to be an anti-agriculture-industry agenda, then so be it!

The tide of public opinion has rightly turned against factory farming, and folks like Dean Ryder Fox, Associate Dean of Agriculture David Daley, and those “upset stakeholders” and “others in the agriculture industry” can either join the rest of us in publicly condemning such agindustry practices or fight toothand-nail to defend an industry that requires the cruel and inhumane treatment of animals.

dismiss this kind of program with a series of flippant remarks is a pretty good indicator of systemic failure at Chico State. In a system with any real social conscience, no one as glib and seemingly ignorant as Dean Jennifer Ryder Fox could ever have risen to a highly paid position of authority.

The word “sustainability” is thrown around the Chico State campus with abandon, but there is little evidence that this institution can provide students with any idea of what the word actually means.

Dean Fox is recalcitrant. As each day passes, her credibility is sinking, and ultimately this means the credibility of Chico State is sinking too. A team player takes one for the team; a team player doesn’t ask the team to take one for the individual.

Can you imagine if President Zingg made these comments? This would clearly be unacceptable, but Zingg’s political acumen would result in an immediate retraction.

Why hasn’t Dean Fox been forced to retract her biased and factually inaccurate statement?

What’s up, Chief Trostle?

Re “Budget woes” (Newslines, by Tom Gascoyne, Oct. 25): On Friday, Oct 26, at around 10 p.m. I was walking on Main and Third streets when a teenager pointed at a police SUV and started saying “PO-PO, PO-PO.” In an instant the driver of the SUV hit the brakes. Two officers got out. One of them was none other then Chico Police Chief Kirk Trostle. I recognized him because I had just read the article “Budget Woes,” which included his picture.

They both drew out their large clubs as if they were going to give the kid a beating, and the other officer (I didn’t see his nametag) said, “What, you got something to say? Yeah, that’s what I thought, weakass.” I was surprised by the machismo attitude of this cop, especially right in front of Chief Trostle.

Chief Trostle, if you are going to talk about budget woes and how you are understaffed and need more police for your department, it had better be so you have more officers to protect and serve, not for them to stroke their egos and intimidate.

Though handmade signs announcing a “Retirement Sale” have some passersby concerned about the shuttering of downtown landmark The Bookstore, current manager Josh Mills wants to assure customers it is not closing.

Mills, who has worked there for 22 years, will become the new owner following the retirement of Ron Barrett around the first of the year. Barrett opened the store in 1976 at 337 Broadway and moved to the current location at 118 Main St. in 1992. The store has been featured in Sunset magazine twice and named one of “The Top Four Best Used Bookstores in Northern California.”

“There will be incremental changes, but overall it will be the same used-book store that everybody loves,” Mills said of his vision for the business.

NOTE TO THIEVES: SCOOTERS ARE SLOW

An alleged scooter thief was arrested Friday (Nov. 2) after leading police on a chase reaching speeds of up to 25 miles per hour, according to a Chico police press release.

The rider of a 2009 Honda Ruckus scooter refused to stop when Officer Peter Durfee attempted to pull him over near the intersection of West Second Avenue and North Cedar Street at about 6:30 p.m. Durfee pursued the scooter until it disappeared into an almond orchard at the north end of Warner Street.

The scooter was found abandoned in another orchard on West Eighth Avenue near muddy footprints leading north. Ronald Louis Zausch, Jr., 29, of Chico, was detained nearby and identified by Durfee. He was arrested on charges of evading an officer and vehicle theft.

NOT A BOYCOTT?

Tim Crews, editor and publisher of the Sacramento Valley Mirror, reports that Willows Police Chief William Spears is calling for a boycott of the paper.

Crews cited a section of the chief’s blog that reads: “I will not support his newspaper (freedom of speech) any longer. I urge others to also stop their support of the Mirror. Cancel your subscriptions; do not run ads in the paper. Furthermore urge others to drop their subscriptions and boycott or not support businesses that elect to continue to support him” Crews (pictured) responded to Spears in an email: “Your tactic for these several years had been to demean or defame those who have the temerity to question your authority.

That task, sir, as long as this nation has been a nation, is the function of the press.”

Despite his blog comments, Spears denied he’s called for a boycott. “That’s over the top,” he said in a brief phone interview. Spears’ job as chief ends on Dec. 30. However, he was elected to the Willows City Council on Nov. 6.

Emissary of the Iranian people Nobel Peace Prize winner Shirin Ebadi on human rights in her country and around the world

L election in a troubled nation, a woman from an even more troubled nation came to Chico to ast Monday night, on the eve of an

talk to some 600 people who gathered to hear her views on the struggle for human rights in her country and throughout the world.

That woman was Shirin by Ebadi, the only Iranian to win Jaime O’Neill the Nobel Peace Prize, and the only person ever to have that prize confiscated by the country of her birth.

She was invited by Chico Performances as part of the annual President’s Lecture Series, a program that has brought Desmond Tutu, Mikhail Gorbachev, Lech Walesa, Richard Leakey, Salman Rushdie and a long list of international notables to speak at Laxson Auditorium.

Ebadi had a full day before she took the stage.

She spoke with students in a couple of classes, met with members of the faculty, and held a brief press conference, answering questions from about a dozen people who turned up a couple of hours before her lecture. It surely made for an exhausting day, but she’s known much worse things than exhaustion in the years since the Shah of Iran was overthrown in 1979, replaced by an even more ruthless and oppressive leadership.

Though she received her law degree from the University of Tehran and rose to become one of the first female judges in Iran, her career was cut short when the Ayatollah Khomeini came to

power, dismissed her and other female judges from their positions and relegated them to lesser roles as clerks in the court. All of her property in Iran has been expropriated and auctioned off, and she now lives in exile in London.

In answer to one of the questions at the press event, she said: “My husband was tortured and imprisoned, forced to testify against me and against himself.

He’s now free, but the government is angry at me because I continue to speak out for human rights everywhere. … Of course they know I will not go silent.

Why should I be scared of death? It will happen in my life, certainly.”

Ebadi’s record of outspoken

courage prompted the Chico State audience to rise to its feet en masse when the diminutive woman took the stage later that evening, accompanied by her translator, who rendered her observations into unadorned English made eloquent by its directness and simplicity.

Ebadi’s legal training showed up in the way she formulated her thoughts.

Whether discussing the need for women everywhere to rise up to continue the fight for their rights, or lamenting the ill treatment of followers of the Baha’i faith in her home country, she would first state a premise, then arrive at a conclusion preceded by the word “therefore.”

“Dear Friends,” she began, “I’m sure you hear every day in the news that Iran is a danger to the international community. I’m here as a representative of the Iranian people, and I’m here to tell you that the people of Iran do not agree with their government. The people of Iran do not support the government’s nuclear program, even if it is, as the leaders say, an energy program.”

She drew laughter and applause when she noted, dryly, that there is a lot of sun in Iran, that the hottest place on earth is in her country, and that the opportunities for solar and wind power are abundant, obviating any need for nuclear-power plants and undermining the pretense that Iran’s interest in nuclear technology has anything to do with energy production.

“The people of Iran oppose nuclear energy. But the nuclear policy of Iran has prompted sanctions, resulting in an 80 percent devaluation of the currency, causing much poverty among the people.”

She spoke at length about the plight of the 300,000 Baha’i followers in Iran who, she said, are deprived of all rights.

And she talked about the corruption of the spirit of Islam that has taken place since the revolution of 1979. If an unmarried man and an unmarried woman have sexual relations, they are both punished by flogging, 100 lashes

each. If the woman is a Muslim and the man is a non-Muslim, the woman will receive 100 lashes, but the non-Muslim man will be executed.

Since the overthrow of the Shah, she told her audience, “the life of a woman is worth half that of a man. If a man and a woman get in a car accident, damages to the man are twice those paid to the woman. In a court, the testimony of two women is equivalent to the testimony of one man.”

It has not always been this way.

“Women in Iran,” she said, “got the vote before women got the vote in Switzerland. The feminist movement in Iran is the strongest in the Middle East.”

Ebadi expressed fears that should the United States pursue an even more bellicose course of action in its relations with Iran, that would result in even greater oppression there.

She paused, and when she spoke again, her emotional appeal could not have been more direct. “I want to ask you, my dear American friends, to oppose a military attack on Iran. The government of Iran will take advantage of it. Long live the friendship of our two nations.”

Those words prompted a spontaneous standing ovation, her second of the evening. There would be a third as she concluded her remarks.

In the Q&A that followed, the

lines were long on both sides of the auditorium. The questioners mostly were women.

One wanted to know why moderate Muslim religious leaders didn’t speak out more forcefully. That prompted Ebadi to lament the fact that “Iran and Saudi Arabia are the only two countries that still practice stoning.” She also expressed chagrin at the hypocritical double standard the U.S. government displays toward places like Saudi Arabia, never criticized for its human-rights record, but where women can’t even drive cars.

“Not enough attention is paid in the West to moderate Islam,” she continued.

“The media inspire Islamophobia, but one-fourth of the world’s population is Muslim. In order to have a peaceful world, we have to know each other. Do you think all Muslims think like the Taliban?” she asked. “The moderate imams have to become more active, and they have to teach the militant youth that violence only brings more violence.”

A high-school student of Turkish descent asked what message Ebadi would have for a roomful of high-school girls.

“Self-confidence is important,” Ebadi answered. “Young women must go after their dreams. Don’t be scared of losing.

A loss is an introduction to a victory, the way a high jumper has to step back in order to jump higher.” Ω

Pot-bust flashback Charges filed in 2010 dispensary raid early two and one-half years ago, Rick N and Donna Tognoli were proud owners of the medical-marijuana dispensary Scripts

Only Service (SOS), growing and dispensing cannabis to hundreds of members with doctors’ recommendations. That all came to a crashing halt in June 2010 when SOS was raided, along with seven other Butte County dispensaries.

Though SOS was shut down due to the seizure of its property and money, no charges were filed until this September, which has the Tognolis crying foul and suggesting collusion within the county government between a county supervisor and the district attorney.

“The charges were filed about two weeks after I called Butte County Supervisor Larry Wahl a liar in an open [Board of Supervisors] meeting attended by Butte County DA Mike Ramsey,” Rick Tognoli said.

That Aug. 28 meeting involved a proposal to rework an ordinance regulating the growing of marijuana that had been rejected by the voters via a referendum. Ramsey strongly refutes the Tognolis’ allegation.

“At that meeting I proclaimed the supervisors’ marijuana-growing proposal was unconstitutional, so filing charges to ‘get back’ at Mr. Tognoli, who also opposed it, doesn’t make sense,” Ramsey said.

The 2010 raids on the collectives were conducted for their practice of accepting monetary “donations” for medical pot, said Ramsey. So far only one other collective, Mountainside Patients Collective, has been charged, but that case was dropped due to the ill health of the collective’s owner. The recent charges against SOS include 14 felony offenses related to sales, cultivation and

transportation of marijuana; arraignment is set for Nov. 16.

Ramsey says the laws in place simply do not allow for the sale of medical marijuana.

“I’m against medical-marijuana dispensaries. Neither Proposition 215 nor SB 420 allows for the sale of pot, even as a reimbursement,” Ramsey said, referring to California laws legalizing and regulating medical pot.

The only collectives that are legal, he said, are the “hippie-type ones” in which patients themselves grow on common property.

“Those too sick to grow for themselves must assign a personal caregiver such as a family member or licensed vocational nurse,” Ramsey said.

The 2010 raids were conducted using

more than 100 officers from dozens of lawenforcement agencies. They confiscated $35,000 from SOS and the Tognolis’bank accounts, including $25,000 belonging to Rick’s trucking business, which, he said, crippled it.

“My trucking business went from grossing over $500,000 a year with three trucks and six employees to $200,000 a year with just one truck and one employee now,” he said. The Tognolis estimate they’ve lost $750,000 in revenues plus $20,000 in legal fees. They insist the SOS funds were clearly separate from those of the trucking business.

“The DA has spent over two years trying to prove we were laundering money and he can’t,” Donna Tognoli said.

legal battle, but hope to prevail.

“If we are tried by a jury we expect to win.

But if we are tried only by a judge we would lose because it’s a good ol’ boys network, but we would appeal,” Rick Tognoli said.

Asked why it took almost two and onehalf years to bring charges, Ramsey said it was due to a shortage of investigators.

“We only had one retired deputy DA working part time on the follow up,” Ramsey said. “Also, the state laws governing collectives have been in flux.”

Max Del Real, a lobbyist for Butte County medical-marijuana growers, said he thinks the delay was a symptom of poor law enforcement.

“If a case is really serious, you usually get quick action from the DA,” he said. “The Butte County busts ignored state law and made them seem like the Wild West.”

The Tognolis agree.

“The DA’s opinion doesn’t matter; state law does,” Rick Tognoli said.

The Tognolis cite a 2009 ruling by the California Third District Court of Appeals in the case of County of Butte v. Superior Court that gave Californians the right to cultivate pot collectively. It upheld a ruling by Butte County Superior Court Judge Barbara Roberts that rejected Butte County’s policy of requiring collective patients to physically participate in the growing their own cannabis and instead allowing them to contribute financially.

“When I told Ramsey about this ruling he looked me in the eye and said, ‘Judge Roberts is a poor judge,’” Rick Tognoli said.

A year ago Tognoli was awarded the right to have his $25,000 returned, but it proved a hollow victory. The judge ruled that all the money must be held in an off-limits account pending the outcome of the case.

Today the Tognolis still run SOS, albeit a tiny version of the dispensary. It operates without a storefront, delivering medical marijuana to patients, Rick Tognoli said.

“The other day I delivered cannabis to a sick, elderly woman who couldn’t lift her arms to accept her medicine,” he said. “What a corrupt county. There’s no accountability.”

t’s all over but the counting of last-minute absentee and provisional ballots—at least at the Chico City Council level. While Mayor Ann Schwab came in first with 11,279 early absentee and Election Day precinct votes, only eight votes separate fourth-place finisher Randall Stone and fifth-place finisher Andrew Coolidge in the race for four council seats.

Tami Ritter (9,978 votes) is a solid second-place finisher, and Sean Morgan (9,115 votes) is sitting comfortably in third place.

Appointed incumbent Bob Evans came in fifth and so will be off the council by the end of this year.

Depending on how the StoneCoolidge contest goes, the council will have either a 4-3 or 5-2 liberal bent.

A County Clerk’s Office employee said there were “a lot” of ballots yet to count and that the final tally should be posted by Saturday (Oct. 10). Getting a grip on how many uncounted ballots are from Chico precincts is an inexact science. In the 2008 presidential election, which saw a similar voter turnout of about 80 percent, there was total of 55,446 countywide mail-in or provisional ballots— those that may or may not be valid.

This year, by Election Day, the clerk had received 41,587 such bal-

lots, with 12,904 from within the city of Chico. If the numbers stay constant, that could mean another 14,000 countywide ballots have yet to be counted and about one-quarter of them (about 3,500) could be from Chico.

Measure J, the effort to protect the city’s annual $900,000 utility tax based on cell phone use, went down by a 53-47 percent margin, while Measure K, which asked voters to protest the Supreme Court ruling that recognizes “corporate personhood” was approved with 58 percent of the vote.

Measure L, which called for a city charter change to have the city clerk be appointed by and report to the City Council rather than the city manager, was approved with 64 percent of the vote, and Measure E, the Chico Unified School District bond measure to fund school maintenance, was approved by 63 percent of the voters.

In the 1st Congressional

District race, Republican Doug LaMalfa has a commanding 58 percent of the vote over Democratic challenger and second-time candidate Jim Reed, who lost to longtime incumbent Wally Herger by virtually the same count two years ago.

Republican Dan Logue has retained his 3rd District Assembly seat with 56 percent of the vote over Democrat Charles Rouse. Jim Nielsen (R-Gerber) is barely holding onto the needed 50 percentplus-one vote in the special election to fill the District 4 State Senate seat that opened up when LaMalfa stepped down on Aug. 31 to concentrate on his run for Congress and possibly save the taxpayers

from having to fund a standalone special election.

If Nielsen doesn’t get enough votes, there will be a taxpayerfunded runoff in January between him and the second-place finisher, who right now is Magalia Democrat Mickey Harrington (28 percent), followed by Logue (11 percent), who withdrew from the race on his doctor’s orders but too late to remove his name from the ballot, and current Chico Unified School Board Trustee Jann Reed (6 percent), who ran as an independent.

Speaking of the school board, incumbent Liz Griffin (32 percent) and newcomer Linda Hovey (28 percent) are ahead of Gary Loustale (24 percent) and Erik Lyon (17 percent) for the two open seats. And in the contest for the 5th District Supervisor seat, Doug Teeter beat Paradise Town Councilman Joe DiDuca. In the race to fill DiDuca’s and two other Town Council seats, Greg Bolin (35 percent), Mayor Woody Culleton (27 percent) and John Rawlings (26 percent) finished ahead of veteran candidate Stan McEtchin (11 percent).

In statewide measures, Gov. Jerry Brown’s Prop. 30, a temporary tax increase to fund schools and public safety, squeaked by with 54 percent of the vote, though 53 percent of Butte County voters rejected it. Statewide 53 percent of voters said no to Prop. 37, the call for labeling genetically modified foods, with 57 percent of the voters in ag-based Butte County rejecting the effort.

The Butte County Clerk’s Office has 30 days to vet and tally the mountain of uncounted ballots that are currently sitting in a county warehouse in Oroville.

he fault line running through the Chico City Council was evident at the panel’s meeting Tuesday (Nov. 6), when it adopted the city’s first Climate Action Plan (CAP) by a vote of 5-2.

The council members who dissented, Bob Evans and Mark Sorensen, did so not because they opposed the plan, per se, but because they wanted the council to hold off on voting to give business owners more time to study it.

As Linda Herman, General Services administrative manager, explained, state legislation mandates that the city develop a plan to reduce greenhouse gases in the urban area. Fortunately, the city recently drew up its 2030 General Plan and in doing so conformed to that legislation. The CAP is thus a companion piece to the general plan.

The plan is divided into two phases.

Phase I covers the period through 2015 and describes the actions taken to reduce GHG emissions by 10 percent below the emissions level of the base year, 2005. Herman called these actions the “low-hanging fruit” that was easy to pick and quantify.

Phase II, whose goal is to reduce the base-year GHG emissions by another 15 percent in the years 2016-2020, will be more difficult to achieve, Herman said. “It’s kinda like losing weight,” she said. “The last pounds are the hardest to drop.”

The actions taken during Phase I are incentives-based and won’t have any immediate impact on local businesses. Indeed, she said, passage of the CAP will be good for many developers because it will make it easier for them to meet California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) requirements.

Also, approval of the CAP will not give the council automatic leverage to implement more burdensome regulations during Phase II, Herman said.

Evans was nevertheless concerned that members of the business community hadn’t had sufficient time to study the plan. He asked the council to continue the hearing to its next meeting on Nov. 20.

Three members of the business community, including Roger Hart, chairman of the Chamber of Commerce’s board of directors, also asked for more time.

ation of the plan, noted that it has been in the works for years, that the STF had held several hearings, that the Planning Commission had held a hearing, and that at least one member of the chamber board sat on the STF. “I’m ready to take action on this plan tonight,” she said. “There are no new actions in the CAP that aren’t in the general plan.”

Councilman Scott Gruendl agreed: “We’re establishing a framework tonight; we’re not passing a law.”

Is the TRIP over? Capital Project Services Director Tom Varga had some bad news for the council. Funding from the Total Road Improvement Program (TRIP) meant to match state grant funds to widen Highway 32 east of the freeway was being held up, and the city needed to find an alternate source in a hurry or risk losing up to $10 million of the “use it or lose it” grant money.

The widening is crucial to future development, including Meriam Park, Varga said.

It’s also a CEQA mitigation project in the 2030 General Plan, and its failure could put the plan at risk.

Varga said his staff had come up with an alternate construction schedule that reduced the matching funding needed this fiscal year to $1.4 million, but there was a risk that the city might have to dip into its reserves to come up with some of the money, he said.

Several of the council members said they had “sweaty palms” trying to decide whether to risk it. The decision was especially hard for Evans, whose highest priorities are restoring the reserves and fostering economic development.

“My palms are sweaty too,” he said. “I’m the one worrying about reserves, but we’ve just got to do this.”

A motion authorizing Varga to move forward passed unanimously.

DAY-CARE CHEMICAL CONTAMINATION

High levels of formaldehyde were discovered in 35 day-care centers in Alameda and Monterey counties.

A study funded by the California Air Resources Board and conducted by UC Berkeley researchers was the first to examine air pollution and contaminants in California’s day-care centers and preschools, covering 40 such facilities that served 1,764 children, according to SFGate.com.

Thirty-five of the centers exceeded state guidelines for formaldehyde, a carcinogenic respiratory irritant often used to manufacture household items like particle board for shelving.

The researchers also discovered other chemicals exceeding levels recommended by the state, but concluded the health risks of many of them could not be evaluated.

Dismayingly perhaps, the study found that the chemical levels found in the day-care centers were typical of many indoor environments.

SUGAR DOESN’T MAKE KIDS HYPER

The myth that sugar makes kids hyper has been debunked by a new report.

The Journal of the American Medical Association released a review of 23 separate studies on the subject, finding there is no evidence to suggest sugar consumption alone kicks kids into overdrive, according to SFGate.com. Rather, the studies found that because so many parents believe sugar will make their children hyper, it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy.

One study separated mothers and their children into two groups—those who had been told their sons had consumed a sugary beverage, and those who were told they had consumed a sugar-free drink (while they were actually all sugar-free). The mothers who believed their sons had consumed the sugary drink reported a higher level of hyperactivity.

The review concluded that many people believe higher glucose levels will result in a burst of energy, though apparently most healthy people can’t feel the effects of a small blood-sugar increase at all.

A nurse at Feather River Hospital’s Cancer Center has won multiple awards for a watercolor painting she submitted to the Lilly Oncology on Canvas 2012 art competition.

Charlotte Sweetland, RN, OCN, won third place overall, best entry from a health-care professional and best watercolor by a health-care professional for her entry “The Dance” (pictured), according to a Feather River Hospital press release. Sweetland was provided an allexpenses-paid trip to New York City to attend the award dinner; a $4,500 donation to a cancerrelated charity was also made in her name.

Sweetland teaches the cancer center’s watercolor course, which is offered for free for cancer survivors and caregivers.

Gay conversion, failed Local author discusses state ban on gay-conversion therapy for children

Until he came out for good in 2000, the Chico State graduate student, devout Christian and author of the autobiographical book, Why I Slept with My Therapist, went to extremes attempting to convert himself to heterosexuality and reconcile his sexual and spiritual identities And as someone who repressed all sexual behavior for the better part of two decades (and is intimately familiar with the negative mental-health consequences associated with attempting to convert), he is particularly supportive of California Assembly Bill 1172. AB 1172 bans gayconversion therapy—in which a homosexual patient undergoes treatment in an effort to become heterosexual—for patients under 18 years old; it will go into effect Jan. 1, 2013.

The legislation, authored by Sen. Ted Lieu, passed the state Senate in May and

was signed into law by Gov. Jerry Brown in late September. Brown denounced such “reparative therapy” attempts as “nonscientific ‘therapies’ that have driven young people to depression and suicide,” adding that “these practices have no basis in science or medicine.”

The techniques of conversion therapy— also known as “reparative therapy”—have reportedly run the gamut, from enforced heterosexual dating to the administration of electric shocks while viewing images of same-sex erotica.

Kraemer agrees that the science of gayconversion therapy is questionable at best.

“Therapists today want to think of themselves as mental-health experts in the way that doctors want to think of themselves as physical-health experts,” he said during a recent interview. “If they want to think of themselves in that way, they need to be held to a high level of scientifically based medicine.

Kraemer’s attempts to change his orientation are at the heart of Why I Slept With My Therapist, in which he details his struggle with two conflicting identities—the homosexual who desperately wanted to be intimate with other men and the good Christian who was equally passionate about upholding the principles of his religion. For many years leading up to coming out, Kraemer suffered from severe anxiety, depression, emotional instability and suicidal thoughts. “[The symptoms were] specifically related to my efforts to stop being gay,” he said. “There were moments where I had hope—a heterosexual dream, a verse from the Bible, meeting a really nice woman—but these were always short-lived.”

The book focuses primarily on Kramer’s relationship with a therapist (given the pseudonym “Tim” in the book) who proposed an unorthodox approach to conversion based on Dr. Joseph Nicolosi’s 1991 book, Reparative Therapy of Male Homosexuality.

Nicolosi maintains that homosexuality is typically the result of a “gender-identity injury” in early childhood often caused by ill-defined parental roles, such as having a domineering mother and a passive father. To remedy the patient’s homosexuality, Nicolosi suggests “re-parenting” therapy, in which the patient is “comforted and healed by intimate but nonsexual male relationships,” Kraemer writes.

But Tim takes the therapy a step further—he “adopts” Kraemer as his “spiritual son,” inviting him to family functions, letting him stay overnight and generally emphasizing a strong father-son bond and heterosexual physical intimacy.

The therapy quickly gets weird, though, as manly embraces turn into caressing, and caressing turns into not-so-heterosexual showers together. As the story unfolds, it becomes apparent Tim has a host of unaddressed sexual-identity issues of his own.

Association (APA) has taken a firm stance against gay-conversion therapy in a position statement: “In the last four decades, ‘reparative’ therapists have not produced any rigorous scientific research to substantiate their claims of cure. Until there is such research available,

[the APA] recommends that ethical practitioners refrain from attempts to change individuals’ sexual orientation, keeping in mind the medical dictum to ‘first, do no harm.’”

The APA also emphasized it finds homosexuality to be “a normal and positive variation of human sexual orientation.”

For many parents—especially those who are religious—discovering their child is homosexual can be a shock. And Kraemer sympathizes with the families who have decried the gay-conversion therapy ban as a violation of their First Amendment right to exercise their religion.

“Some Christian parents believe that if their child is gay or lesbian and acts upon it, that he or she is in danger of being condemned by God to an eternal Hell,” Kraemer said. “For these parents, to be told that they can’t take their son or daughter to therapy to change this is terrifying.”

For these families, Kraemer suggests seeking spiritual guidance from non-credentialed religious counselors, so long as they don’t claim to be able to change their child’s sexual orientation. “[Parents] need to be aware that the overwhelming consensus of the experts and the overwhelming research done on the issue says people can’t change their sexual orientation even if they are able to

change their behavior,” he said.

Kraemer knows first-hand how misguided and damaging reparative therapy can be.

“I would never have realized how ineffective it was if I hadn’t given it my best shot,” he said.

“What would have been better, however, is if I had been told from the beginning that I wasn’t going to be able to change.”

And it wasn’t until Kraemer came to terms with his sexuality that he was able to alleviate his mental distress. Shortly before coming out to his parents in 2000, as Kraemer writes, he realized that after years of therapy, praying and failed heterosexual relationships, he was “more homosexual than ever.” He ultimately discovered the best remedy was simply being himself, homosexuality and all.

“All the anxiety and fear and the depression and suicidal thoughts are gone,” said Kraemer.

“To accept myself, not just as gay, but as human, has been so liberating.

It’s like all the weight is off my shoulders.” Ω

EARTH WATCH LAME LEVEES OUTSIDE CHICO, GERBER

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has deemed that 33 miles of levees near Chico and Gerber do not meet operation and maintenance standards.

The corps’ Sacramento District conducted a routine inspection of nine levee systems on Mud, Sycamore and Dry creeks near Chico, and Elder Creek near Gerber, finding all nine to be “unacceptable,” or unlikely to serve their purpose during a flood, according to an Army Corps of Engineers press release. The corps identified erosion, encroachments, bank caving and rodent control as the most serious deficiencies.

Levees deemed “unacceptable” will be ineligible for federal aid to repair flood and storm damage until they are properly maintained.

“Our findings help the agencies that own and maintain these levees prioritize levee fixes and help the public understand their flood risk and make informed decisions about their safety,” said Meegan Nagy of the Sacramento District.

Chico is increasingly embracing the eco-chic appeal of ‘upcycled’ clothing

U.S. WATERS DEEMED DIRTY

The majority of U.S. waterways suffer from pollution and are getting worse, a new report finds.

The Environmental Protection Agency released a new database titled “How’s My Waterway?” that details the condition of streams, lakes, estuaries and wetlands across the country, according to an EPA press release. The database finds 81 percent of U.S. coastal waters, 69 percent of lakes and 84 percent of wetlands to be “impaired,” or “unable to support their designated uses.” The results are particularly grim in light of the 40th anniversary of 1972’s Clean Water Act, as little progress has been made toward the law’s promise to return the nation’s water to drinkable, swimmable and fishable conditions.

The data may underestimate the scope of the problem, however, as only 27 percent of rivers and streams and only 1 percent of wetlands have been properly assessed and figures do not include new chemicals that do not have set pollution standards.

WILDLIFE ABUSE ON FACEBOOK?

A federal wildlife specialist has drawn the ire of environmentalists and wildlife advocates for posting photos of animal abuse on his Facebook page and other Websites.

Jamie Olson (pictured), who works as a trapper for Wildlife Services in Wyoming, allegedly posted photos of two dogs attacking a coyote in a leg-hold trap and of himself posing with a coyote carcass, according to The Sacramento Bee. The photos, along with several more similar shots posted on Olson’s Twitter account and two other sites, began circulating after an environmentalist spotted them, leading to more hot water for Wildlife Services, which has been criticized for its practice of killing predatory animals to protect livestock.

Olson claimed to not know anything of the photos, saying, “I heard that someone had gotten into my Facebook account.”

The five Chico artists who make up Chikoko gathered for the group’s annual fall fashion show at the fairgrounds last month, this time under the theme Metamorphosis.

As in past years—the show has been going for seven years now—Hughes and the other Chikoko designers incorporated used materials, from grandma’s doilies to literal pieces of garbage, diverting some of that awfully huge flow of trash away from the landfill and bringing it to the runway as unique haute couture pieces—blouses, dresses, miniskirts, hair accessories and more.

“It’s hard to find a particular thing that you want [to incorporate into a design], but it’s not hard to find good, useable materials,” said Hughes. “So oftentimes our work will be guided by what we find rather than

what we think we want to find.” This year, Chikoko members relied on local dumpsters, thrift stores, Habitat for Humanity’s ReStore, and their own closets, “using materials that already exist in the world,” as Hughes put it, to pull together the highly anticipated fashion show.

The results were at times bizarre and outlandish, like the puffy outfit made from packaging materials that prevented the model from being able to put down her arms, and at other times, remarkably wearable, as was a tight-fitting strapless dress made out of burlap coffee bags. pieces were “upcycled”—a current buzzword in the fashion biz referring to clothing designed and made by updating and reworking old pieces of clothing or other materials.

Most notable was the “Indecent Disposal” portion of the show, featuring literal pieces of trash as high fashion. Cassette tape, bicycle inner tubes, colorful hair rollers, and plenty of unidentifiable junk were perfectly fitted to the models, who expertly strutted down the runway, often in unthinkably high heels.

Doilies, moss, brightly colored polyester blankets, and single-use plastic bags were all featured in the eye-catching wares that models donned on the runway. Hughes estimates that upward of 1,200 people attended the event. And the Chikoko designers, along with a dozen or more other local artists, will team up for their annual Bizarre Bazaar (Dec. 15-16, at Chico Women’s Club), the holiday-market event that features upcycled and original fashion and gifts, all locally made.

“There has been and has continued to be a really strong do-it-yourself movement,” Hughes observed.

As it turns out, a growing number

of local shops also support the DIY ethic by selling upcycled wares, often made by the growing number of local designers, including the ones from Chikoko. The

grandmother of the eco-fashion shops in Chico, Three Sixty Ecotique, has been around just 3 1/2 years, and is continually expanding its vision of environmentally forward fashion. The popular downtown boutique was voted (once again) the Best Place to Buy Vintage Threads in the 2012 CN&R Best of Chico readers’ poll.

Crystena Hemingway, who coowns the shop, believes the store’s popularity is partially the result of consumers who want to internalize “the idea of recycling, people wanting to be more globally and ecominded and unique. … We can change our system with where we put our money.”

Three Sixty Ecotique, which had the unpurchased items from the Chikoko show for sale until last week, will begin a new chapter in its life next month by offering a fashion-based quarterly ’zine. Each issue—offered for free and paid for by local companies that place ads—will focus on a particular fashion era and how to wear clothes from that era today, starting off with the Mod era (from the late 1950s until roughly the mid-’60s).

In the last year and a half, five other stores have opened in town, specializing in vintage, upcycled, or higher-end resale. Pepper Grand Coulee’s Funky Trunk, on Mangrove, focuses on vintage, “quirky” clothing, while BOHO in the Garden Walk mixes gently-used fashion with vintage pieces. Konjo, another newer store on Main Street, also offers high-end used fashion. Others include Yard Sale Swap Shop and Cocoon.

At the newest addition to Chico’s eco-fashion world, Yard Sale Swap Shop, on Main Street next door to Home Ec, co-owner Anne Crutchfield holds up a dress pieced together from an old tablecloth and some ribbons, tucked into a rack of resale blouses and dresses with higher-end fashion labels.

Crutchfield moved here from the Bay Area four months ago and opened the shop with Jaime Wyman the same month. Their store specializes in gently used high-end fashion and pieces from local indie designers, like the tablecloth dress which was made by Chico designer Ellen Jordan.

UNCOMMON SENSE The election is over, folks Just as you’re happy the neighbor took down his fake cobwebs and cardboard gravestones and tossed the rotting pumpkin, he’ll likely appreciate you doing the same with the campaign signs covering your front lawn now that the election is over. In some cases, the candidates or their local representatives will come collect them, but when asking if they do, make sure they use responsible recycling practices.

To recycle them yourself, disassemble the wood posts from signs (being sure to remove any nails or staples) and the whole lot can be placed in your roadside recycling bin. Or, get crafty and reuse them as canvases or other art projects (apartment therapy.com has plans for a bird nest). If you’re politically-minded, simply paint or paper over the old slogan, replace with your own statement and get to stickin’ it to The Man or reminding your neighbors “THE END IS NIGH!”

“Especially in a town like Chico, I think people like having something different” to wear, said Crutchfield.

“You’re not looking at a rack of the same thing over and over.”

Cocoon, on Park Avenue near the MANAS gallery, takes upcycling a step further. Stores focusing on gently-used clothes will usually buy the clothing they sell from the public for trade or cash, but Summer O’Neill, owner of Cocoon, buys damaged clothing as well—clothing that other shops usually reject. She calls it “trading for parts.”

“Maybe one wool sweater has moth holes, and we’ll take a cool trim off another shirt that has damage, and we’ll cover up the holes with the trim,” and then put it in the shop for sale, explained O’Neill.

“The community definitely is coming out and showing support of local designers and artists,” said Hughes, who hopes that ecologically minded people will come out to support the brick-and-mortar stores that continue where Chikoko leaves off when the models leave the stage.

“The key to not just the success of artists, but I think the community as a whole, is to value the unique offerings within the community.”

Hughes believes the growing number of eco-fashion shops won’t cause competition among them, but will create a bigger pool of consumers by raising the availability of eco-fashion overall.

Crutchfield echoed similar sentiments: “There are so many places opening—we’re all sort of hoping Chico will become a destination for selling and trading clothes.” Ω

HOPING FOR THE GMO-LABELING BEST! As I write this, the Nov. 6 election has not yet taken place, but of course as you read this it’s history, and you know whether Proposition 37—which called for the mandatory labeling of genetically engineered food—passed.

I hope it did.

But regardless of the outcome, those of us not wishing to unknowingly put GMO-tainted food into our bodies (as well as people who give even a small damn about their health and the health of their kids and so on) should not forget about those corporations that dropped a bundle (try $44-plus million, at last count) on trying to defeat Prop. 37. (See The GreenHouse, “Beware of organic brands that are fighting Prop. 37,” Aug. 30, 2012, for a list of offenders.)

A Nov. 2 California Watch story added The Hershey Co., Nestlé USA and Mars, Inc. to the long list of No-on-37 donors that includes Monsanto, DuPont, Kellogg (makers of Kashi, etc.), General Mills (Cascadian Farm, Muir Glen, etc.) and Chico’s own Smucker’s (R.W Knudsen and Santa Cruz Organic juices). No matter the outcome of the election, remember the companies that actively attempted to defeat the proposition and vote—again and again—with your dollar by not buying their products.

CONVERGING ON BUTTE COLLEGE Thought I’d give a shout-out to the upcoming California Student Sustainability Coalition Fall 2012 Convergence, which will be held Nov. 9-11 at Butte College. Keynote speakers featured at the event are Caleen Sisk, chief and spiritual leader of the local Winnemem Wintu tribe, and Anne Symens-Bucher, the personal assistant of widely known author and environmental activist Joanna Macy. Among the other activities included on the convergence’s bill are a day of workshops “on diverse topics highlighting interconnectedness,” as the event’s press release put it, and two nights of camping near the college campus. Up to 500 sustainability-minded college students from around California are expected to attend, in addition to members of the public, who are encouraged to come as well.

The behind-the-scenes organizer of the event is Mimi Riley, “a faculty activist who has initiated a Certificate in Sustainability at Butte College,” said Merlinda Fournier, co-chair of the convergence’s media team. “She brings her students to [the annual] Bioneers [Conference] in Marin [County] and hosts the Student Sustainability Club on campus.”

This year is the first time the annual event is taking place at a community college rather than a four-year college, Fournier pointed out. “The reason behind this ‘first’ is the college’s reputation in the sustainability community,” she explained.

The cost of the three-day event, which includes a catered lunch and snacks, is $25 for college students and $50 for community members. Deaths at Chico State have faculty and staff concerned about their safety STORY AND PHOTOS BY

n May 16 Chico State sociology professor Andrew Dick succumbed to the lung cancer that had been diagnosed a year earlier. Exactly four months later Tami Harder Kilpatric, who worked in the Chico State Political Science Department office, died of lung-related cancer. Both of their offices were located in the northwest corner of Butte Hall; Dick’s on the seventh floor, Kilpatric’s on the sixth. Kilpatric was 51. Dick was 47. Each was reportedly in good health, and neither smoked.

As has been reported in this paper (“Worker deaths raise concerns,” Sept. 27), many on campus, particularly those in Butte Hall, took notice of the deaths and began asking questions. There have long been concerns about buildings on campus that contain asbestos, which has been linked to lung cancer. In Butte Hall the asbestos was sprayed onto the building’s metal framing to provide fireproofing to keep the metal support beams from failing structurally in case of a fire— the image of which was burned into America’s consciousness with the collapse of New York’s Twin Towers on 9/11.

At least five people who worked on the top floors of Chico State’s Butte Hall have died of cancer-related illnesses in the past seven years. To show his concern, professor Mark Stemen placed the “DANGER ASBESTOS” sign in front of the building. It was quickly removed by school officials.

In fact, a vast majority of the buildings on campus are known to have asbestos, including Butte, Plumas and Kendall halls, the Meriam Library, the Shurmer and Acker gyms, the Physical Science Building and Laxson Auditorium. Two buildings—Colusa Hall and part of the Bell Memorial Union— have gone through complete asbestos abatement, an expensive and disruptive activity.

Butte Hall is seven stories tall, the second tallest building on campus. It cost $3 million to build and was completed in 1972. The federal government banned use of asbestos spray for fireproofing the following year.

In 1989 the Environmental Protection Agency determined that no level of asbestos was safe and introduced a program that would have banned it entirely by 1996. The ban was challenged by the asbestos industry and overturned on a technicality by the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals in 1991. President George H.W. Bush ordered the EPA to let the ban die.

Had he not done so, says Chico State geography professor and environmental activist Mark Stemen, the university would have had to abate all the asbestos from its buildings. In fact, there were plans to abate Butte Hall of asbestos by 1995.

“But right after the federal lawsuit was dropped, so were our plans,” said Stemen, whose office is on Butte Hall’s fifth floor.

An informational forum at which

employees could express their concerns was held Oct. 9. Gayle Hutchinson, dean of the College of Behavioral and Social Sciences, which is located in Butte Hall, sent an email notice of the meeting to members of her department.

“Dear BSS Community,” the message begins, “I just received this Memorandum from Marvin Pratt, Director of Environmental Health and Safety, and Luis Caraballo, Director of Facilities Management and Services.

Their memo expresses sincere concern for the health and safety of all users of Butte Hall and describes the steps under way to address concerns regarding asbestos in the building.”

Pratt and Caraballo were joined at the meeting by Rick Beall, president of Rocklinbased Entek Consulting Group Inc. Included in an information packet that was handed out were the results of a 2010 study of Butte Hall conducted by Entek looking for airborne asbestos fibers prior to the replacement of the ceiling lights and ballasts.

The report, done of course before the work began, concluded, “The air sampling results of this study indicate the levels of asbestos inside of the seven spaces tested were below the detection limit of the laboratory using the U.S. EPA AHERA method.”

Asbestos, it is said, is safe until disturbed.

Stemen said that Chico State President Paul Zingg told those at the meeting that they

were dealing with “a sad building, not a sick building.”

Not all who attended were happy with what they were told, and one former CSUC employee expressed her concerns about missing the meeting in an email to Dean Hutchinson. Alison Quigley said she had worked in the same office with Kilpatric.

Quigley, who now works at Cal State Fullerton, said on occasion their office would be showered with a white dust.

“In our time, each of us called facilities and each of us had someone out to look at it,” Quigley wrote. “They’re response to me the first time was, ‘There must be dust in the vents.’ From what I have heard, when Tami called facilities, they basically told her the same thing.”

Quigley said that she’s been having health issues, including an incessant cough and a numb throat in the past year. She said blood tests taken few weeks ago were negative but added, “I will be going through more acute tests in these areas in hopes that there is no cancer or any other type of illness that is borne of what really is a ‘sick building,’ Butte Hall.”

On Oct. 17 Pratt and Caraballo released a notice that said their department would conduct ceiling-tile evaluation, air-vent cleaning, air-filter changes and post a map of the buildings on campus that have asbestos.

Joe Wills is the university’s

information director. He said he was at the meeting and suggested Zingg’s comment may have been misinterpreted by some.

“I heard what he said, and I felt he really tried to empathize with friends and colleagues of someone who had died,” Wills said of Zingg.

“He’s very concerned. Every indication we have is that this is a safe

building. That would go against everything we believe in, every fiber in my body, to let people work in a dangerous building.”

Other members of the faculty who attended the meeting fired off emails the next day asking, among other things, for a list of repairs the building has gone though since it was built, a copy of the contract the school has with Entek, the possibility of hiring an independent investigator, and conducting a health survey of the Butte Hall staff.

Dust and debris from 15 locations inside Butte Hall—“accumulated dust from the top of bookshelf(s)”—were sampled by Hayward-based Forensic Analytical Laboratories, and according to the cover page of its report, “No asbestos was detected in any of the submitted samples.” In both Kilpatric’s and Dick’s offices investigators found major traces of cotton and cellulose fibers, as well as paint chips in Kilpatric’s office.

The testing was scheduled to continue through Nov. 9.

investigation of Butte Hall based on calls of complaints from unnamed sources. In an email to faculty and staff, Dean Hutchinson wrote: “In the next few weeks [the Department of Environmental Health and Safety] expects a document request from OSHA. Once EHS provides the documents to OSHA, it is expected that the Cal-OSHA investigator will revisit campus to verify certain aspects of the EHS documents, programs, and/or interview a number of employees.”

Those interviews will be confidential, she wrote.

While no link between asbestos and the recent deaths has been identified, many who work in Butte Hall are understandably concerned. At least three other Chico State employees who worked in Butte Hall have also died in recent years. Elizabeth McMillin of Magalia passed away in 2005 at the age of 68. She had worked 21 years in the Political Science Department, and reportedly died of a lung-related illness. Miriam Monges, who worked in the Sociology Department out of the same office later used by Andy Dick, died from lung cancer in 2006 at the age of 56.

Last August Homer Metcalf, who also taught sociology and had an office in Butte Hall, died of respiratory failure at the age of 76.

The question remains: Are the deaths simply what might be expected of a given population or are they somehow linked by environmental conditions?

for the Department of Agriculture as an administration analyst/specialist. She hired Kilpatric 14 years ago, she said, and worked with her for a few years before Kilpatric took a job in the Political Science Department office on the seventh floor of Butte Hall.

“I went to lunch with Tami and another friend almost every Tuesday or Wednesday for the last several years,” McCrea said during a recent interview in her office. “Tami was an amazing person and an amazing friend. She brought a lot of us together who tend to sit in our offices all day and work and not get out for lunch.”

She described Kilpatric as a selfless person right up to the end. Her husband, Randy, she said, was not yet ready to talk publicly about his wife’s passing.

“She was in the hospital in March literally in her death bed,” McCrea recalled, fighting off tears. “She knew that I’d had a surgery and was so worried about me and calling me and making sure I was fine and could she or Randy do anything?”

McCrea said that despite her illness, Kilpatric continued to work out of her home.

“I have an email from her that she sent in June, three months from dying. She was closing out the Political Science budget, even though she had a feeling that her illness was a result of that building. She was so loyal and such a dedicated and hard worker. She’d asked for a work computer to be installed at home, and she closed out the budget in June at the end of the fiscal year. McCrea believes there is a link between Butte Hall’s environment and her friend’s death. She shared a link to a report from the New York State Department of Health that concludes in its synopsis: “The inhalation of mineral (e.g., asbestos) fibers has been described by many investigators; we believe, however, that this is the first report of inhaled non-mineral (e.g., plant and plastic) fibers.

These bio-resistant and bio-persistent cellulosic and plastic fibers are candidate agents contributing to the risk of lung cancer.”

As mentioned above, the particle identification analysis results report includes finding major traces of cotton and cellulose fibers in Kilpatric’s and Dick’s offices.

“To me something is not right,” McCrea said. “Tami suffered sinus infections for years after she started working there. She had a thyroid surgery two years before the cancer was diagnosed, and her back had been really hurting two months before all this happened.

Walking to lunch she would say, ‘Robin, I’m so frustrated. I have another dusting of powder all over my desk. I call and all they tell me is we’ll clean it up, there is nothing to worry about.’

“I’m very concerned how campus is reacting to this. I sat in a meeting and took three pages of notes that day. I know people are afraid to speak up.”

McCrea, who’s been on campus 18 years, said she realizes the university has limited options in these tough financial times, but is nonetheless troubled by the situation.

“I guess it’s just sad that in this day and age people are so afraid of the bottom line of lawsuits,” she said. “We’ve become so fearful of that type of thing that we put the health and safety and lives of people that come to work every day at risk. Yes, it would be inconvenient to move all those people. Yes, it would be expensive, and yes, it would be a big deal to implode that building or do total abatement or whatever they need to do to make it safe, but at what price are you going to deny that it get done?”

She also said colleagues are asking why she is being so public in voicing her concerns.

“I’m pretty much at the point where I figure, well, I may get red-circled—and I know

that happens on campus—but I don’t see any raise coming in the next seven years before I retire. I love the College of Agriculture, and I don’t plan to apply for another job, so if the word’s put out…

“I’ve had three people Facebook me who said, ‘You don’t know me, but thank you for speaking up.’ Even Tami’s husband has asked me why, and I say because there is a point in life where you have to put principle and doing what is right above protecting your own security. I could go deliver flowers or something if I lose my job. Tami was a dear friend, and how can people not speak up?

During a recent walk through Butte

Hall secretaries and workers in other departments voiced various levels of concern about their work conditions. Some pointed to areas on the ceiling where silver duct tape covers holes in panels that sit just a few feet below the sprayed asbestos. The secretaries did not wish to go on record with their comments, saying they feared retaliation.

The thing happens three times, but they don’t do anything until someone gets hurt? Sounds like they know this building is unsafe, but they don’t do anything until someone dies?

“I believe the first question the university asks is, ‘What is in the best interest of the students and the faculty?” Stemen said. “But you can’t tell me that the second or third question isn’t, ‘Who’s going to pay for it?’ I don’t want to be disingenuous and say these people don’t care about us, but it’s been this whole funding thing. They keep talking about funding while we rearrange the planter boxes on the deck of the Titanic.”

Nov. 24, at Hahn, an artist who has shown 1078 Gallery. extensively in Chico and the Pacific Northwest, offers an 1078 Gallery 820 Broadway impressive number of small-scale 343-1973 works that seem to explore the www.1078 complicated qualities and habits gallery.org of varied modern life.

A proliferation of pieces lines the walls, with a long series of small images pinned carefully in place. Hahn works in the suggestive terrain of craft, needling shapes into the pulp of paper with thread. Some forms are blockier and heavier than others as the line shifts with the imprecise process of stitching. While each object depicted retains integrity, each doesn’t exactly appear sturdy or solid either. In shape they are somewhat reminiscent of the early instructional works of Fluxus artists like Ay-o or Yoko Ono, pieces that instructed viewers toward a task such as cutting along a line of an image and proceeding to do something useful with the result, often in very simple terms.

Hahn’s chosen subjects here are suggestive of something that could be cut or that has the potential to cut: bonsai plants, teeth. Or alternatively, tools for repairing or holding items: a sharpener, a box. In the case of the piece “Ribbon” the item is one that that could bind separate items together.

Interested in the processes and consequences of art’s materials and labors, Hahn pushes the viewer to consider what sorts of worlds we make with each small gesture, be it the click of a button on a joystick or the turning of a page of a book in our hands. With 24 CN&R November 8, 2012

the piece “Cable,” we see an interest in connections, and with the series of “Wishbones” a question of what is possible when the sinew of a connection is forced to break. Hahn’s occupation with these objects being put together or pulled apart is always thoughtful, and presented in a visual language gently charming.

Filling the space of the gallery are Han-

son’s sculptural installations. In some works Hanson explicitly references the Duchampian readymade by using the stool shape of Duchamp’s famous work “Bicycle Wheel.” But Hanson modifies the form and intent of Dadaist art by applying her own handmade practice to the pieces. The stool is applied a treatment of being sawed in half and presented in a grid form. Multiples of broken-in-half stools are painted sky blue and pushed up against the wall, becoming a physical embodiment of an enigmatic equation in “Half-Assed Stools.”

In “Enough,” Hanson incorporates a chair but also a piece of fruit that can be intervened and reached for, then potentially truly eaten by the viewer. Dialoguing with minimalism via Dada, the interaction of the the viewer’s body with the pieces is essential to their process. Perhaps this becomes most clear with the work “Swing Tree Swing,” a sculpture that hangs over an enlarged photographic Google map of clear cuts made in the canyons of Northern California. A social concern for the fate of local landscape is arrived at through this map of clear-cut trees, but also through the placement of a viewer’s body cascading over the photographic evidence in real-time. Hanson incorporates the viewing body in a manner that is playful but not jarringly at odds with the gravity of her subject matter.

What should be cut? What moves should one make? What kind of world can we inhabit individually and collectively? Hahn and Hanson sift through these questions in surprising and generous ways in this rich exhibition. Ω

Party with a vet In addition to the traditional Veterans Day remembrances, there are several festive events planned to celebrate vets this weekend. Chico State kicks things off Saturday, Nov. 10, with its Honoring Our Veterans event at the BMU Auditorium, with a color guard, community band and the unveiling of an art exhibit, and on Sunday, Nov. 11, the Elks Lodge holds its annual celebration featuring food, speakers and live patriotic music. “You OK?” I said.

She nodded, poured me another glass of zinfandel, and led me to the dining table. She took a breath. “The Red Tavern’s been sold.”

“No!” I said. “That can’t be.”

“I’m afraid it’s true.”

I shot the wine and held up my glass for a refill.

She walked back into the kitchen, returning with the zin and a glass of chardonnay for herself. by I went to the stereo and turned Edith up.

“You know,” she said. “It might not be that bad. Maybe the new owners won’t change it much.”

“One can only hope,” I said, though I was doubtful. After all, the Red Tavern ★★★★★ was one of our favorite restaurants in Chico—in the last five years, we’ve eaten there at least 20 times, never disappointed.

“I say we try it,” she said. “Go in with Kitchen closes open minds and give it a fair shot.”

She scowled. “I think you’re being just a little over-dramatic.”

“Moi?” Three days later, we headed over to the “new” Red Tavern, by then two months into its new ownership, and Henri is ★★★★★ EPIC thrilled to report that little if anything has changed. Oliver, our favorite bus boy— ★★★★ AUTHORITATIVE and ice-cream maker par excellence—was still charming guests; Laurie was still ★★★ APPEALING managing to keep the kitchen, bar, and dining rooms running smoothly; John the ★★ HAS MOMENTS bartender was still telling jokes and doing ★ magic tricks; and best of all the menu, FLAWED which changes seasonally, included a

wide variety of delicious-looking appetizers and entrees made with fresh, locally grown ingredients, and was prepared by the same chefs as before.

We started at the bar (full bar service available), where I sipped a glass of Haraszthy zinfandel and John suggested that Colette taste a couple of whites—she went with the Carmenet chardonnay. Then we shared two appetizers: the duck-confit-and-arugula salad ($12), dressed with a citrus vinaigrette, goat cheese and local peaches; and the prawns (three, $9), smoked on a skewer, wrapped in bacon and brushed with a pomegranate vinaigrette. Both were absolutely divine, and we were impressed by the size of the prawns and large mound of rich, dark duck meat on the salad.

“Well?” Colette said. “I don’t exactly see you wiping away any tears.”

“I know,” I said. “This is really good. Let’s see what they do with entrees. Shall we eat at the bar?”

“Sure.”

We ordered couple more glasses of wine, and then Colette ordered the grilled pork chop ($23), with roasted apples and creamy spinach over polenta. Delicious.

We both agreed, though, that I made the better call that night: The swordfish special ($26), with pilaf and green beans and moistened with pomegranate beurre blanc (emulsified butter in white wine) was sumptuous.

“Satisfied?” Colette said.

“Not quite.” I motioned to John. “Can we see the dessert menu?”

There was no question. It had to be the bread pudding with Oliver’s local Spoons brand of ice cream—the cinnamon- and cardamom-spiced vanilla variety ($8). Incredible—sweet and rich and just a bit tangy, the perfect coda to an amazing evening of fine dining.

It turns out the new Red Tavern owners— Michael and Kelly Vadney (Michael grew up in Vina, and the couple recently relocated from Huntington Beach)—are committed to keeping things pretty much the same—the seasonal menu with local ingredients, the quality service and the overall ambience. And we’re delighted about that. We look forward to stopping in from time to time this winter and then enjoying spring and summer evenings on the lovely outdoor patio. Ω

early on that he’s right about that in more ways than one: He’s an airline pilot of unusual gifts, and he’s a spectacularly reckless consumer of drugs and by Juan-Carlos alcohol as well.

Selznick Whitaker practices both kinds of flying more or less interchangeably, and in the course of Flight, a heroic exploit that is also a lethal misadventure forces him, eventually, to face up to the full consequences of who and what he has become.

Skillfully scripted by John Gatins, Flight is Flight a rousing, pungent character study, with a fine, Starring Denzel nuanced performance from a smoldering Washington, Washington. heard from in the opening scene but not actually seen until much later, when Whitaker tries to reconnect with his estranged teenage son (an excellent Justin Martin). Other family background emerges via the Georgia farm where Whitaker hides out after the crash. It’s been passed down from his grandfather, and his late father’s Cessna 172 is still housed in a hangar on the property.

Kelly Reilly is very good as Nicole, a redheaded drug addict with whom Whitaker has a stormy post-crash romance. John Goodman is at his rowdy best as Harling Mays, an ebullient drug-meister who makes house calls even while Whitaker is hospitalized or facing indictment.

And three other striking characters appear during the legal finagling part of the story: Bruce Greenwood as an old Whitaker comrade who now heads up the pilots’ union, Don Cheadle as a Chicago lawyer who specializes in defusing malpractice cases, and Melissa Leo as the lead investigator for the National Transportation Safety Board. In 1980, in the midst of the Iranian hostage crisis, a CIA agent organized an undercover caper that was desperate, dazzling and very improbable. In the hands of Ben Affleck and company, that little farrago becomes a riveting, briskly entertaining thriller. There is no shortage of peril and suspense in the basic incident—agent Tony Mendez (Affleck) is attempting to spirit six Americans hiding in the Canadian embassy out of Iran. And the tension is only heightened by the outlandishness of Mendez’s scheme—he and the six escapees will exit Iran disguised as a Canadian film crew. That scheme adds a second, curiously complementary element to the story—Mendez must set up an actual production company as a supporting cover story for the filmcrew disguise. The cover-story movie becomes a sci-fi epic called Argo which might be filmed in Iranian locations. The movie angle adds a rich level of ironic comedy to Affleck’s own production, which thereby also becomes a dark, barbed comedy-drama about the business of making movies. Silent Hill: Revelation 3D

Boozy true-crime writer Ellison Oswalt (Ethan Hawke) is desperate for another bestseller, so he uproots his longsuffering family and relocates them to a suburban house where another family was sacrificed in a sinister ritual. Of course, he doesn’t clue his wife in to that li’l bit of info.

But ol’ Oswalt is pretty short on clues himself, seeing how he finds a box of 8mm home movies and a projector up in the attic—a box that wasn’t there before they moved in—and still stays put. Oswalt is so desperate to resurrect his career that he decides to go with the flow, how ever “sinister.” Even after he realizes that the found footage is not just of the prior family being snuffed, but also a few other families scattered across the map. All this ends up pretty much as you’d expect it to end. Fans of stupid horror films might be impressed by this buttnumbing Frankenstein of faux snuff footage and wannabe J-horror. But I found the whole thing to be boring, derivative and kind of ludicrous. Cinemark 14. Rated R —C.B.

Pitch Perfect

Director/cinematographer Ron Fricke (Chronos, Baraka) spent five years filming this non-narrative documentary in 25 different countries that “explores the wonders of our world from the mundane to the miraculous” via natural wonders, disaster areas, sacred places, industrial zones and other examples of the modern world.

Sequel to the 2006 adaptation of the survival-horror video game of the same name, this one following the character of Heather back to the alternate dimension of Silent Hill.

Sinister

Not the least of Cloud Atlas’s various accomplishments is that, over nearly three hours of moderately unconventional storytelling, it sustains itself as steadily engaging dramatic entertainment. This collaborative hybrid comes from a trio of writer-directors—Tom Tykwer (Run Lola Run) and the Wachowski siblings (The Matrix). Tykwer directed the modern-day sections—the romantic and professional travails of a young, gay composer (Ben Whishaw) in the Britain of the 1930s; the efforts of an investigative reporter (Halle Berry) to expose a corporate energy scandal in 1973; and the present-day misadventures of a slightly addled literary editor (Jim Broadbent) trying to escape confinement in a prison-like nursing home. The Wachowskis directed the 19th Century segment, the shipboard drama of a young businessman (Jim Sturgess) who comes to the aid of a stowaway slave, as well as the two episodes set in the future— in Korea in 2144, a young “fabricant” (Doona Bae) rebels against the socially-engineered regimentation imposed by a high-tech oligarchy; and in 2346 two very different survivor/refugees (Berry and Tom Hanks) try to sort out their respective heritages and destinies. Following those motifs and echoes is one of the quiet pleasures offered by this occasionally clamorous movie. Cinemark 14, Feather River Cinemas and Paradise Cinema 7. Rated R —J.C.S.

Seven Psychopaths

The action in the new movie by playwright/filmmaker Martin McDonagh includes the efforts of an Irish guy named Marty (Colin Farrell) to write a Hollywood screenplay, but all he has at the start is a title, “Seven Psychopaths.” The fragmented stories that emerge, for Marty’s screenplay and/or from McDonagh’s movie, have a good deal of violence in them, some of it farcical, some of it gruesome, some of it both at once.

McDonagh, whose movies call Quentin Tarantino to mind, fancies himself having a moral seriousness that is lacking in Tarantino’s pictures. Be that as it may, Seven Psychopaths fails to distinguish itself as moviemaking and ends up looking a lot like a rather lazy and deluded knock-off of the Tarantino “brand.” What it does have going for it are a good cast, an assortment of offbeat amusements, and a wacko throwaway story about a psychopathic gangster

The retired CIA agent (Liam Neeson) who rescued his daughter who was taken by human traffickers in the first film is himself the target of the father of the kidnapper who he killed while saving her. (Side note: Isn’t it obvious that they should’ve called this Taken Again? C’mon, people!). Cinemark 14. Rated PG-13.

Wreck-it Ralph

A Wreck-it Ralph (voiced by John C. Reilly) is the villain character in a video game who gets tired of being the bad guy, so he escapes to other games in the arcade in an attempt to be the hero. Too Far to Care [reissue] Old 97’s Omnivore Recordings Fifteen years ago a little band from Dallas was making waves in its home state of Texas while becoming part of a newly anointed “alt-country” movement that included groups like Whiskeytown and Uncle Tupelo.

What separated the Old 97’s from the rest of the pack was their penchant for being a little bit country and a whole lotta rock ’n’ roll. It was never captured more perfectly than on their 1997 major-label debut, Too Far to Care, an album that married outlaw country with Replacements debauch. Frontman Rhett Miller’s tales of drunken encounters and life on the road are told through the voice of someone whose nose is always buried in a book. Not to be overlooked, guitarist Ken Bethea provides the album’s memorable riffs (especially on the full-tilt “Timebomb”), in addition to his loose lead work. There’s nary a dud in the bunch. Exene Cervenka punches things up by sharing vocal duties with Miller on “Four Leaf Clover,” and bassist Murry Hammond’s “West Texas Teardrops” provides the full country experience. In addition to being available for the first time on vinyl, this 15th anniversary reissue also features 11 previously unreleased demos. Fifteen years on, Too Far to Care hasn’t aged a day.

Rebirth Jimmy Cliff UMe I want Jimmy Cliff’s song, “Many Rivers to Cross,” played at my funeral, even if I’m the only person who shows up. That song is a secular prayer, one of those hymns to the human spirit for those who have trouble finding solace in churches. Cliff was on my radar before I ever heard of Bob Marley, and it’s good to hear him again on this appropriately titled album that addresses the rebirth of the human spirit we all seem to hunger for these days. The album also represents the rebirth of Cliff himself. Working with Rancid’s Tim Armstrong as producer, this is Cliff’s first studio album in more than seven years and is a reassertion of his place in the reggae hierarchy. Alas, there’s no song here as soaring or as powerful as “Many Rivers to Cross,” but then songs like that are near miracles for any artist. Still, reggae lovers will know they’re on solid footing from the lively first track—“World Upside Down”—which will join the canon of songs central to the reggae soul. A few songs, like “Outsider,” are more R&B than reggae, but all in all, this is, indeed, a rebirth of a legendary reggae pioneer.

Havoc and Bright Lights Alanis Morissette Collective Sounds For me, Alanis Morissette’s Jagged Little Pill was the right music at the right time—an album that will be forever flawless in my mind.

Nothing else has ever matched those first few notes of “All I Really Want.” After seven years of holding out hope for lightning striking twice, Havoc and Bright Lights has found its way into my rotation, and though it’s not lightning, there are some serious sparks.

Morissette seems to have found the middle ground between the angst of Jagged Little Pill and the spiritual mundanity of its follow-up, 1998’s Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie. There’s enough raw discomfort in “Woman Down” (great crescendos!) and “Lens” to balance out the retrospective and almost too-personal “Win and Win” and “Receive.” “Celebrity” is a perfect example of the melting pot that is her style, with its touch of Bollywood sound mixed with almost-screeching vocals and a mellow but poignant discourse that punches home the story of its title. In many ways, it seems that this album would have served as a great bridge between Jagged and Junkie, as it introduces the dominant sound in the latter while appeasing fans with a touch of the former. Regardless, Morissette always creates unique sound filled with honesty, and this album is no exception.

True to her reputation as an upbeat, hopeful, can-do person— as her lively, inspiring performances and humanitarian work with such organizations as UNICEF and her own Batonga Foundation attest to—Kidjo was not letting any storm, Franken- or otherwise, wreck her day and paralyze her with fear. She said she’d prepared for what could be a long haul by cooking all weekend. “I hope I

don’t lose electricity,” added Kidjo matter-of-factly, “otherwise all the food is going to garbage.”

Kidjo hits the stage in Chico State’s Laxson Auditorium on Nov. 15 in support of her new live album, Spirit Rising, with her unique, infectious brand of world music, informed by such varied musical influences as James Brown, Stevie Wonder, Santana, the late South African songstress Miriam Makeba and Beninese traditional music. Kidjo sings in four languages, including Fon and Yorùbá, both native languages of Benin.

Kidjo’s powerful voice and electrified stage presence have earned her accolades from esteemed quarters. Time magazine dubbed Kidjo “Africa’s premier diva” in 2007, a moniker that has understandably stuck. Last year, the BBC included her on a top-50 list of African icons; also in 2011, the UK’s The Guardian newspaper recognized Kidjo as one of the top 100 women in the world in the arena of art, film, music and fashion. In July, she was hailed as “the undisputed queen of African music” in an article in the UK newspaper The Daily Telegraph, in advance of her performance at the BT River of Music festival at the London 2012 Olympics.

Despite her fame, Kidjo comes across as down-to-earth. She speaks earnestly of her concern about the problems of the world— social inequities such as the widening gap between the world’s wealthy and poor, the fact that women own

only 1 percent of the land worldwide, and the lack of education opportunities for girls and young women in Africa, which the Batonga Foundation is set up to address by providing scholarships, building schools, and so on.

Kidjo noted that her parents raised her to be independent and “not become a weight on the shoulder of a man. You need to have a job [as a woman], because anything can happen.” And in order to find decent employment, one must have an education, she stressed.

“We have to empower the women of Africa,” said Kidjo.

“And we have to teach the boys that it’s OK to cry, it’s OK to feel pain, it’s OK to feel empathy.” She does not, however, limit her desire to help humankind to her native continent of Africa.

Kidjo aims to spread good feelings worldwide with her music, feelings that audience members can carry with them into the community after her performance ends.

“When the music touches you, you improve the community,” is how she put it.

“My whole career, my entire life, I’ve been telling people the one thing that doesn’t know color or boundary is music,” said Kidjo, who began performing at the age of 6 with her mother’s theater troupe. “Music is the quintessential tool of peace.”

As for the impending violence of Hurricane Sandy, “I’ll be fine,” she said. “I’m under the wings of God, so I’m cool.” Ω

• Ol’ dirty rapper: It’s been a long, strange life for 73-year-old x-rated rapper Blowfly.

Born Clarence Reid, he started his musical life as soul/R&B singer and songwriter, penning hits for the likes of Sam and Dave and KC & the Sunshine Band. Since the early ’70s, though, he has also been singing songs about butt pirates, porno freaks, and his lady farting in his face. These days, Blowfly is Reid’s bread-and-butter, and you have a chance to get nasty with the man, this Wednesday, Nov. 14, at the Towne Lounge.

believe that ulcers were caused by stress and spicy foods. But in the 1980s, two researchers named Barry Marshall and Robin Warren began to promote an alternative theory. They believed the culprit was Helicobacter pylori, a type of bacteria. To test their hypothesis, Marshall drank a petri dish full of H. pylori. Within days, he got gastric symptoms and underwent an endoscopy. The evidence proved that he and his partner were correct. They won a Nobel Prize for their work. (And Marshall recovered just fine.) The biannual event Take Back the Night is being coordinated this semester by 20-year-old Sarah Sullivan, a junior health-education and women’s-studies double major. After interning at the Chico State Gender and Sexuality Equity Center (GSEC), Sullivan became the Women’s Program coordinator and likes being able to put the theories she learns in her classes to practice. Her passion for ending injustices and both women’s and LGBTQ rights led her to join GSEC and help inform others, and she feels at home in the office, located in the basement of the Bell Memorial Union. The event is tonight (Thursday, Nov. 8); beginning at 6 p.m. (check event listings at www.aschico.com/gsec for schedule). A silent candle-lit march starts at Trinity Commons at 8 p.m.

What is Take Back the Night?

It’s an event that is aimed at educating the campus and community about the issues of sexual assault and violence against women. We also want to empower survivors and to help family and friends support those who have been impacted by sexual assault.

What are the different events going on tonight, and is there anything new or different?

Every time we have this event we have a women-only speak-out, where everyone sits in the dark and all are able to tell their stories of surviving sexual assault or violence. This year, we are adding a gender-inclusive speak-out, to make sure that all groups feel welcome and have the opportunity to speak out. The

women-only survivors’ speak-out will be at 6 p.m. in the Cross-Cultural Leadership Center on campus, in Meriam Library 172. The genderinclusive speak-out will be in Bell Memorial Union room 304.

What is the atmosphere like during the march downtown?

It is a really emotional experience, because this is such a serious issue that impacts so many people. The fact that it is silent makes it have this intense feeling that is really empowering. It’s an amazing sight to see everyone walking in support and solidarity of the issue.

We usually have 200-250 attend, and we’re hoping this year is even bigger.

Do you expect negative reactions while you are marching?

Because sexual assault happens to so many people, the fact that anyone would be against us marching is just ridiculous to begin with.

But there are always going to be people who disagree with you, and I think that comes from an uneducated perspective. But that is why we march and hand out fliers explaining why we are out there doing it.

Crazy A writer friend of mine asked me about the most dangerous or crazy thing my sons had done. Although my memory doesn’t come with a guarantee, I couldn’t think of a single thing, other than their not allowing enough prep and travel time, which sometimes strikes me as crazy.

Then again, crazy in retrospect, and in the moment, was the time my son got me handcuffed on our lawn in Minneapolis. I suppose it was dangerous, too, because the government goon who put the handcuffs on me had a large pistol. The one with him also had a large pistol. I didn’t, which is one reason I was handcuffed on my own lawn.

I had an armload of laundry when he rang the bell and ordered me to drop it and come outside with him. So I did. Goons are fearful, paranoid, and well armed, so I listened as he put the cuffs on me behind my back and had me kneel on the grass.

He told me that someone had called the special number from our phone and then immediately hung up. That is why men with guns wanted me to kneel on the lawn in handcuffs. The government just wanted to check things out.

By this time the other agent had learned that one of the several children inside the house had called the special number to see what would happen. My 5-year-old had learned about the special number at his government school, apparently decided that not knowing what would happen if he called the number was in itself an emergency, and dialed it.

I suppose that’s when he realized that there actually was no emergency and he had nothing to say, and so hanging up was the logical next step. He was right, and that hang-up led to me kneeling on the lawn in handcuffs.

As the damp from the lawn chilled my knees, a couple of neighbors drifted over. Then Janice showed up and asked loudly for an explanation. This was all many years ago, back when you could ask a goon a question without risk of bodily harm and prison and expect a civil answer. As he released me the goon said that whenever a “Nine eleven hangup” happens a couple of agents go to the house—they can find out where you live—and put handcuffs on whoever comes to the door. No matter what else they might decide to do, standard procedure is to put cuffs on the schmuck who says hello. We didn’t believe them either.
