elcome to Chico! What you have in your hands is the Chico News & Review’s annual student introduction to our vibrant, beautiful little city. Goin’ Chico is geared toward newcomers who’ve moved here to attend Chico State or Butte College, but we hope it taps into the sense of fun and community enough to offer something to returning students and CONTENTS maybe a few tidbits for the townies as well. ART .................................. 8 Chico is best known MUSIC/NIGHTLIFE ...............12 for the university, Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. and FOOD ...............................18 Bidwell Park (and probably OUTDOORS ........................14 hometown sports hero Aaron Rodgers—quarterback of the NEIGHBORHOODS ................28 Green Bay Packers—who got his start in football playing at COMMUNITY ..................... 30 Pleasant Valley High School and Butte), and that’s a pretty good intro in itself. But it’s just the beginning of the story. We’ve packed much more into this well-rounded checklist featuring a wide range of cultural, outdoors and community activities to help get you plugged in to your new home. As the school year progresses, get in the habit of picking up the free Chico News & Review every Thursday to stay on top of the rest of the music, news, arts and fun happening in town.

ARTS
On the walls ... and the stage
Discover MONCA The opening of the Museum of Northern California Art last year means Chico finally has a destination art museum. And the people behind the effort to bring MONCA to fruition have been working nonstop to fill the beautifully refurbished Chico Veterans Memorial Hall with high-caliber exhibits of visiting and local artists as well as maintain an exhaustive schedule of public performances (classical concerts, dance, experimental films) and communityengaging programming (workshops, lectures, demos, etc.). 900 Esplanade, monca.org
Indie flix and chill Tempting though it may be to watch seven consecutive episodes of Crazy Ex Girlfriend on Netflix, consider relocating your duff from the couch in your living room to one of the couches in the front row at the Pageant Theatre, Chico’s only independent movie house. The theater opened its doors in the mid-1970s and joined the digital age with a new projector in 2013. Today, operator Miles Montalbano keeps the cozy theater’s cutting-edge reputation alive by bringing in the latest art-house movies that otherwise wouldn’t play on a big screen in Chico, as well as hosting one-off showings of cult classics. Also, it’s cheap, especially on Cheap Skate Mondays when tickets are only $4. 351 E. Sixth St., pageantchico.com

From the spouting trout in the fountain near City Hall downtown to the giant tetrahedron wind chimes of Humboldt Park in the Chapman neighborhood, it’s impossible to travel far in Chico without encountering
A CHiCo TrAdiTion a piece from the city’s vibrant collection of public art. You’ll catch a lot of it downtown without hardly looking—the many luminary art benches are right on the sidewalks—but there are treasures hiding throughout the city: Some are easy to miss, like a rock that waxes poetic behind the Chico Area Recreation and Park District community center, while others are breathtakingly prominent, like “The Spiral” in Oak Way Park. Venture out on your own, and check out a list on the city’s website, chico.ca.us, to get started (select “City Arts” from the drop-down menu), or join the Chico Arts and Culture Foundation for downtown art tours. They start at the iconic “Our Hands” sculpture at City Hall at 10 a.m. every last Saturday of the month, May through October. chicoartsandculture.org

Keep Chico weird The eyebrow-raising antics of Chikoko have been a staple of the Chico art scene since 2005. The ultra-freaky fashion/ performance art troupe makes hella-weird clothes and has an affinity for creating avant-garde what-did-I-just-witness moments on local stages. The four women behind the troupe are busy all year long—with trading posts, variety shows, one-off performances and holiday bazaars—but their main event is the huge fall “experimental fashion” show at the Silver Dollar Fairgrounds (last year’s event was titled “Devotion” and came with a warning of “strobe lights, latex and adult content”); the standing-room-only crowds are a
testament to their weirdness having captured Chico’s imagination. chikoko.com
Journey to the heart of the Arts District If you are an art or music student at Chico State, never leave school. At least stretch it out as long as you can, because being an artist there means having access to labs and equipment and galleries few can afford. The shining jewel at the center of the School of the Arts is the new Arts & Humanities Building. Opened in the fall of 2016, it houses a new state-of-the-art recording studio, as well as impressive ceramics and glass studios that look out at an inner courtyard. The building sits in the middle of the university’s “Arts District,” with Laxson Auditorium on one side, the Performing Arts Center on the other, and a handful of beautiful

Make a run across the boards There is a long history of community theater in Chico, with current offerings including the contemporary/modern productions of the Blue Room (pro tip: Thursday tickets are pay-what-you-can); the Broadway musical fare of Chico Theater Co. and California Regional Theatre (the latter producing shows at CUSD’s Center for the Arts); and the deliberate work of Slow Theatre, including its signature once-a-year community theater fest, The Butcher Shop. The Butcher Shop got its start one Labor Day back in the 1990s, when some local theater geeks ripped open the side of their parents’ garage and threw a days-long party featuring music, theatrical performances and puppet shows. In its present day incarnation, the two-day festival of all things artsy and awesome is held that same weekend in a spectacular location, an open barn on a sward of green lawn surrounded by orchards past the southern terminus of Normal Street. “End of Normal” describes both the location and the event itself, a free and communityfocused happening that attracts the bulk of Chico’s weirdos and arts-lovers to enjoy amazing, original, experimental theater, as well as music, food trucks, art shows and more. The quintessential Chico experience. blueroomtheatre.com, chicotheatercompany.com, crtshows.com, facebook.com/ TheButcherShopChico

MUSIC/NIGHTLIFE
Chico tonight
Brave the big rooms Bands that have appeared on Chico marquees in the past year: emo-originators Jimmy Eat World, house producer SNBRN, New Orleans legends Rebirth Brass Band, music icon Emmylou Harris and electro-indie pop stars Cults. Thanks to five premier livemusic venues bringing major touring acts to Chico, there are more “big” shows happening in this little city than you could possibly make it to. The two best-known promoters are the bookers of Chico State’s Laxson Auditorium, Chico Performances (world-class acts, from African music to American greats), and the Sierra Nevada Big Room (everything from Americana to

Second St.) and JMax Productions at the Senator (touring rock, metal, punk and rap at 517 Main St.)—and the dance-party palace of Lost on Main (rock, Latin and some of the best funk and jam bands in the world at 319 Main St.).

(Don’t go to just their stuff, though—Chico has a ridiculous number of options that deserve your attention.) The busy collective of musicians, dancers, theater types and writers involved with Uncle Dad’s has been delivering vividly imagined and wellexecuted music and theatrical productions in Chico since 2014—everything from original musical showcases (such as the annual Small Town, Big Sound production, for which Uncle Dad’s rearranges the songs of local artists to be performed by the collective’s orchestra at the Sierra Nevada Big Room), to large-scale music/ theater productions in Laxson

Rock local If you dig live, original music, you’ve moved to the right place, a town with a very active and engaging original music scene. Return to the calendar of the Chico News & Review each week to stay up on the happenings, and check out this quick-and-dirty guide to some of the main players to get a taste of the flavor: • Lost on Main (519 Main St.): the No. 1 spot for dancing to summerfestival type jam and funk bands, both touring and local. Local bands to watch for: Smokey the Groove, Black Fong, Swamp Zen, Lo & Behold. • Naked Lounge (118 W. Second St.): A wide range of cutting-edge music—indie, metal, punk, jazz
and more—in an all-ages setting. Local bands to watch for: Bogg, PERVERT, XDS, Donald Beaman. • The Maltese (1600 Park Ave.): Dive bar with the most eclectic selection of shows in town— practically every genre. Local bands to watch for: Michelin Embers, The Vesuvians, Hank Duke, Sons of Jefferson. • Duffy’s Tavern (337 Main St.): Chico’s downtown bar with Celtic music happy hours every Friday
with the Pub Scouts and garage-, indie-, and regular ol’ rock a few times a month. Local bands to watch for: Surrogate, Severance Package, Skin Peaks. • Tackle Box (379 E. Park Ave.): A rowdy roadside bar specializing in country and rock. Local bands to watch for: Northern Traditionz, Brad Petersen. • Argus Bar + Patio (212 W. Second St.): Rock and acoustic music inside on cold days, on the nice back patio when weather is nice. Local acts to watch for: Pat Hull, Yurkovic. • Blackbird (1431 Park Ave.): Bookstore, gallery, music

Download Boris’ playlist So this is how the music scene works in Chico: There’s this guy named Boris, he’s got a big beard, and he works at a coffee cart inside a trailer that is inside the walls of a nursery and he is curating some of the highest-quality live shows in town. It’s true. As a side gig, Boris Breckenridge, co-owner (with his wife, Lory) of Mockingbyrd Coffee Co. (on the grounds of Magnolia
Gift & Garden, 1367 East Ave.), has been coaxing an impressive string of touring acts—from “highplainsman troubadour” Tom Brosseau to North African guitarist Mdou Moctar—to visit our local venues (Naked Lounge, The Maltese, etc.). Look for “Mockingbyrd presents” on a flier near you. mockingbyrdcoffee.com

some of the greatest songs you’ve never heard before. Josh Indar, a local musician (guitarist/singer in powerrock trio Severance Package), activist and advocate for all things cool carefully curates each episode of his “Eve of Destruction” radio show to delve into underground punk and rock from its roots to the present day, with entertaining commentary on politics, history and culture woven in. Recent playlists run the gamut, from The Stooges to The Black Lips, and also include plenty of local tracks. KZFR is a true community, noncorporate radio station with locals hosting a variety of music and talk-focused shows on the airwaves and streaming online. kzfr.org

So, you want to party? We get it. It’s college. Have fun but don’t be an idiot. Here’s a helpful list: • Do not drink on the sidewalk or streets—if you do, you might be cited for an “open container.” • Don’t binge drink. Ever. Seriously, too many young people have died in Chico from alcohol and/or drugrelated incidents. • Never leave your drink unattended—at bars or house parties. Rohypnol (aka roofies) is real and there are dirtbags in every town, even this quiet one. • Never drink and drive—even on your bike (you can be arrested for that, too). • Use the buddy system. in groups, or call a cab or Uber/Lyft. • Speaking of the buddy system, if you’re worried a friend has alcohol poisoning, get them medical help ASAP.
Don’t fear the oboe Don’t be that person who says, “classical music is boring” without even giving a live show a chance. The North State Symphony at Chico State is legitimately cool. The orchestra is led by musical director Scott Seaton, who’s in his mid-30s, looks younger, and brings tremendous energy to each concert. He’s known to pull off rock-show tricks like bringing audience members on stage to conduct the symphony, or closing with an encore. And since Seaton’s been around, NSS has made it an annual tradition to play a pops concert featuring fresh arrangements of familiar tunes from Broadway musicals, TV shows, movies and popular music. Just get over it and go! northstatesymphony.org

Go on a mind date Do you ever find yourself humming theme songs to your favorite childhood cartoons? Maybe you make obscure historical references that no one gets, or delight in schooling people at Thanksgiving dinner about the many differences between yams and sweet potatoes. Such habits might be under-appreciated by your friends, co-workers and significant other, but they can make you a rock star at any of Chico’s trivia night events. The Banshee (134 W. Second St., Wednesdays, 9 p.m.), DownLo (319 Main St., one Monday a month) and Woodstock’s Pizza (166 E. Second St., Wednesdays, 8 p.m.) all have long-running regular trivia nights, each with its own themes, entertaining hosts and unique flavor. Other venues like The Winchester Goose (800 Broadway) have intermittent events, and all are team-oriented and fun. There’s also beer and prizes!

Join the patio scene
Eating outdoors has become such a staple of the dining experience in Chico that entire blocks of downtown are being taken over by new sidewalk patios. You can snack on chips and guac in front of Tres Hombres (100 Broadway St.), where you’re likely to spot friends on their way to campus around the corner,
and at Burgers and Brew (301 Broadway St.) there’s a fire pit and heat lamps, making outdoor grubbin’ a year-round affair. At the top of the list of back patios is the stylish, lively one behind B Street Public House (117 Broadway St.), while further afield, the popular one at the Pour House (corner of East Avenue and Cohasset Road) features a massive outdoor TV screen for sports enthusiasts.

Chico wakes up late on the weekends because of … reasons. And brunch serves the dual purpose of being the day’s first meal and a curative measure for bodies and heads in need of nursing back to health. There are many options for late-morning meals, but the best are those with lines out front. Hit the trail In case you haven’t noticed, there’s a big, fat park in the middle of town. Bidwell Park is 3,670 acres—nearly 11 miles long—so big you can spend years exploring its shady picnic spots, swimming holes and dramatic, 100-foot-high cliffs. If you’re looking for an easy walk or bike ride, start in Lower Park at One-Mile Recreation Area, where a number of flat trails run along Big Chico Creek and under a canopy of heritage oak trees and sycamores. In Upper Park, however, the trails on both sides of the creek get steep, rocky and exposed. Deep excursions into the canyon provide a sense of seclusion that’s rare outside of true wilderness areas, but remember—you’re still just a few miles from downtown Chico. bidwellpark.org/bidwell-park-home

The decades-long tradition petered out, though, when it grew too big (20,000 one year!) and local government talked the state into prohibiting alcohol on the local stretch of river throughout the holiday weekend. The good news is that smaller flotillas typically take place on other hot summer days (when beer is OK to take along)—so “tubin’ the Sac” is still a rite of passage. Night swim Chico’s signature concrete swimming hole is more than a place to take a dip in the summer. Sycamore Pool in the One-Mile Recreation Area of Lower Bidwell Park is a community meeting place; a jumping-off point for adventures in the park; a beautiful scene captured by countless artists; the go-to spot for skinny-dipping (at night, of course); and the site of the annual Polar Bear Plunge on New Year’s Day. Since it’s part of the same creek that runs through downtown and Chico State’s campus, it’s connected to everything that makes Chico cool.
Get in the game You don’t have to give up on team sports after your dreams of going pro have faded. In Chico, there’s a team to join for athletes of every skill level. At Chico State, outside of the school’s official teams, there’s everything from dodgeball to field hockey teams available to students in its Intramural and Sports Clubs programs. And there are even more choices with the city’s Chico Area Recreation and Park District (CARD). There’s adult soccer, flag football, kickball, volleyball, basketball, plus a hoppin’ ultimate disc league out at Wildwood Park that attracts older dudes
Chico is ridiculously hot in the summer, and that heat radiates out from the season in both directions to make half of May, all of June and September—and even some of October—times when relief-seekers head to the cooling waters of Big Chico Creek to find refuge. Upper Bidwell Park is overflowing with good swimming spots—places with parking lots and easy access like Alligator, Bear, Salmon and Brown’s holes—but there also are a ton of unnamed places that are less accessible and far more secluded. Scout out your own spot along the Yahi Trail, which begins around Horseshoe Lake and parallels Big Chico Creek on its north side for 4 miles—leading you out to the impressive 15 million-year-old Lovejoy basalt (volcanic rock) formations and possibly your own secret beach. bidwellpark.org/ bidwell-park-home

NEIGHBORHOODS
Where you at? C
hico’s small, but a little bit of knowledge—like the names and locations of the various neighborhoods—will keep you moving on your new adventure. First, Chico’s streets. For traveling north and south, there are four main arteries: Nord Avenue/Walnut Street; Esplanade to Main/Broadway streets to Park Avenue; Mangrove to Pine/Cypress streets; and Highway 99. East to west is easy; the streets are numbered, with avenues north of downtown, and the streets from downtown south. And don’t forget the one-ways—First, Second, Third, Fourth, Eighth and Ninth streets. As for the ‘hoods, here’s a rundown and map of some of the main areas where you might find yourself:
■
■
East streets
■
South campus
■
Barber
■
Chapman-Mulberry
Nord/Walnut The corridor west of the campus is lined with apartment complexes and cheap eats and is the gateway to both the Sacramento River (head down West Sacramento Avenue) and Bay Area road trips.
■
One of the sweetest ‘hoods in town, with cool homes, big trees, with instant access to both Bidwell Park and downtown.
The Avenues
This one-time residential neighborhood is now mostly student housing, a lively area with bars, Greeks and a huge Catholic church.
Known historically as Chico Vecino (the name of city founder John Bidwell’s former farmland), “The Aves” comprise student housing near the university and Warner Street, family homes north and east of there, plus Enloe Medical Center, Chico High School and the wide tree-lined promenade known as The Esplanade (seriously, don’t forget to say “the” in front of Esplanade— pronounced “es-plan-aid”).
■
Mansion Park
■
Downtown
Behind Bidwell Mansion is a small ‘hood with other sweet big houses, including the Chico State President’s Mansion, which is now the Albert E. Warrens Reception Center, no longer a residence.
Tons of restaurants, bars, coffee shops, live music and the City Plaza; this is where most things happen.

A mix of working-class longtime locals and students live in the cool houses in this area originally built for employees of the old Diamond Match factory.
Our most diverse area is in the process of getting annexed into the city, and this little pocket of county in Chico’s backyard is a working-class ‘hood where dogs and chickens run free.

COMMUNITY
Meet the locals
Serve somebody At one point or another, you’re likely going to hear folks on campus or in the community say something about “cave.” But before you start searching the foothills for a literal hole in the earth, here’s what they’re talking about: CAVE is actually an acronym for Community Action Volunteers in Education. It’s a nonprofit volunteer organization run by the Associated Students (A.S.), a student-owned auxiliary operated on campus. All you need to know is that volunteering through CAVE will help you meet new people, make friends, develop job skills, gain selfconfidence and, perhaps best of all,

Treasure expedition From the outside, Orange Street Consignment might not look like much. But inside this ramshackle, corrugated-metal building along the railroad tracks is a 15,000-square-foot space filled with all manner of vintage and antique curiosities, ranging from practical to downright unusual. There’s plenty of furniture, jewelry, old postcards and all kinds of collectibles. The business is always on the look for new stock and holds regular estate sales,

so there’s always something fresh and new-to-you to be found. Also worth exploring is the Eighth and Main Antique Center, where a few minutes set aside to explore the dozens of spaces curated by independent vendors—each with a unique focus and flavor—easily can turn into a few hours. 514 Orange St. and 745 Main St.
Fight the power Blackbird: Books, Gallery & Cafe is all of the things its name claims and much more. Since a group of like-minded artists, activists and anarchists opened Blackbird last year—in a beautifully restored
Victorian home in south Chico—it’s become a gathering place for live entertainment, D.I.Y. skill-sharing and the resistance. A rundown of happenings hosted there in recent months offers a glimpse of what the place is all about: Shakespeare and Spanish-poetry readings; open mics; several punk and underground shows, including a three-band fundraiser to benefit Dakota Access Pipeline protesters; book study groups; a volunteer recruitment mixer; workshops on herbal remedies and fermentation; and a monthly night centered around writing letters to prisoners. Check it out. 1431 Park Ave., 433-1577, facebook.com/pg/blackbirdchico
Say ‘hey’ to Heater! If you stick around town in the summertime, one of the best ways to spend a lazy afternoon is by taking in a baseball game at Chico State’s Nettleton Stadium. When the Chico Heat takes the diamond with evening light on the trees and the train passing behind the wall in right field, the scene is an idyllic slice of Americana. Plus, it’s a great community event with cheesy between-inning promotions, occasional fireworks displays and Heater, the lovable dragon mascot. Note: The Chico Heat competes in
the wood-bat Great West League, and the players are collegiate, not professional, and are subject to the standards of the NCAA system (i.e., they don’t get paid). There about 30 home games each season, so you’ll have plenty of opportunities to drink in America’s pastime. chicoheat.com
Go Chico It doesn’t get more “Chico” than the city’s downtown farmers’ markets. Root for the home teams The Wildcats and Roadrunners are legit. As an NCAA Division II school, Chico State has one of the most highly regarded athletic programs in the country. This past school year, between the men’s and women’s programs, Chico State made the national championship tournaments in 10 sports: men’s baseball, track, golf and cross country; softball; and women’s cross country, track and soccer. And Butte College is killin’ it is well, with the baseball and women’s golf teams making their state tourneys this past season; plus, the football team is perennially one of the best in the nation, with a couple of state and national championships under its belt and an impressive list

That would be the magical aroma of the brew kettles of Chico’s Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. working overtime on the million barrels’ worth (per year) of local craft beer. Just follow your nose, and you can get a behind-the-scenes look at how the world-famous beer is made. The basic brewery tour is free, but there are many specialty experiences to be had for a fee (ranging from $10 to $30), including an extended “heritage tour,” as well as sustainability, beer-geek and hop-head tours and two different tasting experiences—a 30-minute “guided educational tasting” and the gnarly Bigfoot vertical-tasting. You don’t have to be 21 to take the

Turn the page Among the many institutions to have fallen to technological advancement and corporate control in recent decades, the onceubiquitous neighborhood bookstore stands out as one of the most tragic losses. The same fate nearly befell venerable downtown icon The Bookstore—which carries a huge selection of used books and occasionally hosts poetry readings and
other literary-themed events—when its previous owner called it quits in 2013. But the Chico community crowd-funded $35,000 to help keep it alive. A true Chico institution, The Bookstore is likely to have the classic or contemporary tome you’re looking for; maybe even a guide to fermenting pickles. Whatever it is, the friendly staff will help you find it. 118 Main St., facebook.com/ bookstorechico
Get mud in your eye A night at the coffee shop, another party in apartment 203, Netflix-and-chillin’—they all have their charms … but if you’re in for a more extreme way to spend the
evening, check out the Silver Dollar Speedway. Just follow the buzzing sound carrying across Chico to the quarter-mile clay track where 800-horsepower, methanol-fueled winged sprint cars are king. (The wings are there to keep the vehicles on the ground as they navigate the oval track at speeds approaching 140 miles per hour.) There’s also a great snack bar and some prime people-watching. And, for an extra shot of adrenaline, take a seat at the north end of the bleachers and prepare to be bombarded by the torrent of raining mud and clay kicked up by a swarm of screaming, winged demons.
