Finishes and Terms Tessera: A Latin word referring to each small piece of stone, tile, glass or other materials used in the construction of a mosaic.

Tesserae is the plural form of the word.

Tumbled: Imagine mosaics that have been weathered for 100 or more years. Any stone under 3� can be tumbled to remove sharp edges and smooth any rough or polished texture, achieving the smooth finish found in materials worn by time. We do not charge to add the tumbling process to your order.

Hand-Chopped and Tumbled: Mosaics made up of tesserae which have been hand-chopped into irregular sizes then tumbled to remove the polish and soften edges.

Polished or Honed: Finishes vary from matte to satin or high-hone to high-polish. Extended lead times and additional charges may apply when altering a stone’s natural material.

Venetian Finish: A flat, hand-honed finish with pillowed edges which gives a subtle three-dimensional quality to the stone.

Handcrafted in Virginia At New Ravenna, we strive to design and create the world’s finest mosaics. We carefully choose each tessera and blend and nip materials by hand to create your one-of-a-kind work of art. Because of this unique process, each New Ravenna mosaic always looks as if a craftsman came to your home and personally installed each tessera by hand.

Inspired Form Meets Function Our studio creates beautiful, practical, long-lasting surfaces for walls and floors for both public and private applications.

Durable, non-slip glass and stone mosaics reveal artistry and craftsmanship through texture, color, pattern, and imagery.

Material Details We source the finest glass, stone, metal, and special materials available to the market for our mosaics. We take great care to ensure that all components of your project from sample to assembly are fabricated from the same lot of material to guarantee a consistent color and texture match.

Design Possibilities and Client Collaboration Specify a new colorway, try a new finish, or order your sample as shown in the following pages. From simple to complex, our design center will help you create your own one-of-a-kind project. Our design team looks forward to working with you to achieve your vision and style.

Customize a Border Our borders range from 1 1/2” to 18” with an average size of 6”, but we can customize any border pattern to fit your space. The following examples show Alexander in three sizes. Notice how we made small adjustments to the pattern so the design remains fluid within each dimension.

Alter a Border to Fit Specific Dimensions When ordering a border to fit a specific dimension, or with continuous corners, our team will create a custom design plan. Our artisans may slightly modify the length of the pattern to flow beautifully from end to end, guaranteeing a graceful and elegant turn and line. When designing for continuous corners, we may create subtle shifts and movements within the pattern, turning the corner with no break in design as the 7” Elegante border demonstrates below.

Transform a Field into a Border A creative border can add timeless style to an interior design plan. Sometimes, all you need is a mosaic border to add a statement to a space. For that reason, many of our field patterns have been scaled to multiple border sizes. In the Zazen adaptation below, the interlocking field was digitally modified to reflect a 3 1/2” border and a 7” border. Ask your account executive if your chosen field has an existing border adaptation. If not, a custom option can be created.

Corner Design Options When your border needs to turn a corner, you have the choice of a block or continuous corner. Both options are demonstrated in the examples below. A block corner is most often used when the exact room dimensions have not been established. This allows the installer to interrupt the border at any point in the pattern to attach the corner.

To design the most luxurious room, specify the exact outside dimensions of the area and order continuous corners.

We will create a plan to accommodate each turn. Our artisans may slightly modify the length of the pattern to flow with no break in design or with a complementary flourish as seen below. Your account executive will ask that you approve each element of the design.

Vision to Reality Send us your ideas, dimensions, and inspirations and your account executive will provide a preliminary cost quote. Our designers can develop a unique pattern or adjust an existing one to suit your vision and requirements. Choose stones or glass from our extensive color palette or allow our expert team to select materials based on your inspiration. Order a hand-drawn depiction to help visualize your design.

Before shipping, all mosaics - whether custom or standard - are photographed, reviewed, and approved by your account executive. Your order, sample, and instructions are inspected for quality and adherence to directions and materials. We will send you progress photos throughout production.

Customize Your Field When you’ve chosen a field you love, order the design as shown or change your colorway. Enlarge the black and white line drawing and specify the location of your selected stones or glass. The examples below show our Euclid field adapted in stone, shell, and Serenity glass.

Luxury Materials Exotic stones such as Blue Macauba and Blue Bahia are more expensive because of their scarcity. Lapis, a precious stone, is also available at market price. We refer to these rare stones as Premium Materials.

Some materials, such as Gold Glass, Brushed Bronze, and Shell, may require longer lead times. These materials are often referred to as Special Materials.

We are happy to use material provided by customers (Customer Owned Material, or COM) in any job. If you are using a stone, glass, or other material that we do not currently offer, please inquire about our COM program.

Made to Measure All New Ravenna designs, excluding the Studio Line, are made to measure. Organic designs, such as Plum Blossom or Ikebana, are hand-drawn to suit your space’s dimensions. Your account executive will request your approval before putting the project into production. With graphic motifs like Solid Ovals, we will digitally render a layout of the template in your dimensions to include cuts and corners.

Value Engineering We understand that budget is paramount in many projects. We often specifically engineer our patterns to differing repeat dimensions by increasing the measurement between design elements. For example, in the 8” Aspen border below, the increased spacing between branches will decrease the price per linear foot.

Digital Renderings Our sales team and designers understand that visualization is a key part of the design process. Using our expert graphics skills, we provide customized digital renderings using the pattern(s) and materials of your choice. The pattern can then be repeated and applied to a floor plan or CAD drawing to fully conceptualize the project.

In this example, Alcala, a waterjet mosaic design from the Miraflores Collection by Paul Schatz for New Ravenna, is rendered in Celeste and Calacatta Radiance with differing palettes of bold Renaissance Bronze and gray-blue Allure.

Dimensions and Templates The key to a perfect installation is precise dimensions. We use your provided dimensions to make final alterations and physical cuts to the stone. If you’re unsure of your dimensions but you’re ready to order, or if your room has complex or round areas, use a simple paper template. Lay a sturdy paper over the area and cut it to the outer most dimensions. Please be sure to use paper that will not easily rip (no wrapping paper or tissue paper, please). Do not use material that might shrink or expand in different temperatures. If you require more detailed instructions, please request our template tips brochure from your account executive.

Face Tape, Maps, and Installation Once assembly is complete, we face tape the mosaic and then cut into sheets that will interlock like a jigsaw puzzle. Each sheet will be numbered and a map is provided to illustrate specific placement of each sheet at installation. This allows for an uninterrupted flow of grout lines, a distinctive characteristic of mosaics.
