Shipbuilders Support Students Newport News Shipbuilding’s annual School Tools Drive supported over 4,000 under-resourced students across Hampton Roads. This year, NNS employees collected over 36,000 school supplies.

said Gary Artybridge, manager of Community Relations. “Also, special thanks to our shipbuilders who went the extra mile to help track, organize and deliver the school supplies to the agencies.”

“Thank you to all the shipbuilders who donated to our annual School Tools Drive. With overwhelming support, we collected over 36,000 school supplies to help local students get off to a great start for the school year. This is a 44% increase from our drive last year,”

Donated school supplies were distributed via social services agencies in Newport News, Hampton and York/Poquoson, as well as local Boys & Girls Clubs and ForKids Inc.

NNS Updates COVID-19 Policy Newport News Shipbuilding has updated its COVID-19 policy following changes in guidance regarding quarantine and mask recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). These changes, coupled with the increased availability of testing and vaccines in the community, including a new vaccine that is similar to traditional vaccines such as the flu vaccine, prompted the following changes: •

NNS will close its testing center, located at 1246 Merchant Lane in Hampton, on Sept. 16. Shipbuilders who choose to be tested for COVID-19 may contact their primary care physician, pharmacy or take an at-home test.

In-person social gatherings are no longer restricted to outdoor events. This includes holiday socials, ERG events, retirements and team recognition events.

Employees who have COVID-19 symptoms must not come to work. Shipbuilders are also encouraged to keep vaccinations up to date, maintain social distance when possible and continue basic hygiene practices such as handwashing. The COVID-19 Council continues to monitor potential COVID-19 impacts on NNS and the community and will make adjustments if necessary.
