NNS Authenticates Keel for Montana (SSN 794) Newport News Shipbuilding authenticated the keel of the 21st Virginia-class submarine, Montana (SSN 794), Wednesday, May 16.

“This is an important day for us,” said Dave Bolcar, vice president of Submarine Construction. “Not only are we celebrating a milestone in the construction of Montana, we also are recognizing the hard work of the 4,000 shipbuilders who are supporting the construction of the newest Virginia-class attack submarine.”

In keeping with a U.S. Navy tradition, former Secretary of the

Interior Sally Jewell, the Ship’s Sponsor, chalked her initials onto a steel plate. Mariah Gladstone, a member of the Blackfeet Nation in Montana, performed a Native American blessing.

“It’s a true honor to meet the commander, crew and shipbuilders who are hard at work shaping this amazing submarine to serve our nation,” Jewell said. “We celebrate the tradition of the keel laying and look forward to blessing her, christening her and ensuring that the natural beauty, rich culture and spirit of the great state of Montana accompany the ship and crew throughout her lifetime.”

Shipbuilders, Families Participate in NNS 5K Hundreds of shipbuilders and their families attended the 11th annual NNS 5K Saturday, May 19, at Victory Landing Park near VASCIC. “This was my first 5K,” said Mike Boisson (X36). “Being fit is a life choice that my wife and I have made together.”

In support of the local community, the Apprentice Alumni Association collected canned food and monetary donations for the Virginia Peninsula Foodbank. The group collected 424 pounds of food and $550 in cash.

The run was not officially timed. “I’m all about health and standards, but I came out to the race for fun more than anything,” said Dayle Runner (X36).

Shipbuilders Honored for Safety Improvements The X36 Tool Repair Team in Bldg. 213 was recently honored with a luncheon for submitting more safety improvements than any other X36 team last year. The team not only looked at its own shop and processes, but also sought improvements in tooling that benefited all trades.

“Safety is everybody’s job,” said Moses Jones (X36). “You would feel bad if you saw something, didn’t report it and someone got hurt. We all have families. If you get hurt, it doesn’t just affect you here. It affects you at home with your kids and your spouse.”

Donnell Robinson (X36) said the team works together well, which makes it easier to develop safety improvements. “When you come to work and everybody gets along and is doing what they love doing, it makes it better.”

Kevin Hobson (X36) said the team is always looking for ways to improve safety.

Asian-Pacific American Heritage Month: Dede Dolkar May is Asian-Pacific American Heritage Month. The theme for this year’s Inclusion and Diversity (I&D) monthly recognition campaign is "Unite Our Voices by Speaking Together." As part of the campaign, four employees will be featured during each recognition month – two from within the featured demographic and two outside of it. Employees will share personal stories, insight and perspectives on what the month means to them. Features will be published in Currents, the NNS to Go app, MyNNS and HII social media channels.

After being born in Kathmandu, Nepal, Dede Dolkar moved to the United States.

Today, Dolkar is a material process engineer working on the USS Helena (SSN 725) waterfront support team.

“I grew up in a Tibetan Buddhist household in Queens, New York,” she said. “It was hard at times, but I’m proud that I always remained true to my roots. Through my experiences, I learned at an early age to find value in the challenges I face as a minority.”

Dolkar says Asian-Pacific American Heritage Month is especially important to her because it’s one of the ways she is able to share her heritage with others.

“It’s a time to recognize achievements and contributions of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders who have made our country a better place,” she said. “It’s the time of year when we celebrate and

As a Tibetan engineer, Dolkar says she is proud to be part of the growing presence of female engineers from the region. “I hope to encourage others to do the same, while paving the way for the next generation of youth interested in shipbuilding or other STEM career fields.”

“I enjoy working closely with the trades, the project team and X67 to understand deckplate performance issues and drive continuous improvement,” she said. “Even though I’ve only been at the shipyard for less than a year, I’ve had the opportunity to work with amazing people of varying ages and from various backgrounds. I’ve learned that you can learn something from everyone.”

Montana-Born Welder Takes Center Stage Jacob McNulty (X18) paid homage to the state where he was born when he welded the initials of Montana (SSN 794) Ship’s Sponsor Sally Jewell onto a metal plate during a keel-laying ceremony last week. NNS Authenticates Keel for Montana (SSN 794) CONTINUED FROM PG 1

Jacob McNulty (X18), a welder at NNS who was born in Montana, welded Jewell’s inscription on the plate, which signified that the keel of Montana is “truly and fairly laid.” The steel plate will be permanently affixed to the submarine.

“The keel laying marks the first milestone for the crew in the construction process of Montana,” said Cmdr. Mike Delaney, commanding officer of the pre-commissioning unit.

“We are excited to begin this journey and bring Montana to life over the next few years.”

Two of the boat's crew members hail from the state of Montana. In an effort to be more efficient and budget conscious, NNS has scaled back keel layings. As a result, the audience was limited to some shipbuilders in the program and the crew of Montana. Shipbuilders are invited to watch a highlights video on MyNNS or watch the entire keel authentication on Huntington Ingalls Industries' Facebook page.

When it comes to emergency situations, assumptions are dangerous.

Don’t assume that you’ll be able to speak for yourself in an emergency or that Newport News Shipbuilding has all the information it needs to contact your loved ones if you become ill or injured. Don’t presume there will always be someone around who knows what to do or who to contact. Don’t think “it will never happen to me.”

Be ready for an emergency by taking action and adding your emergency contact information to your MyHR profile. To access your MyHR profile, go to the “My Info” tile and click on the gear, located in the upper right corner. Click on “Personal Information” and scroll down to “Emergency Contact.”

Click on the pencil icon, which will allow you to enter your emergency contact information.

As a reminder, emergency contact information is shared only with company authorized personnel with a need to know to respond to emergency situations. And while no one plans to have a medical emergency, everyone should be prepared for one.

“Everyone has unique circumstances,” said Dru Branche, director of Environmental Health and Safety. “In the event of a medical emergency, we want to connect you and your loved ones as quickly as possible. Loading your emergency contact info into MyHR ensures we can do that.”

“This is an honor,” McNulty said. “There are not many people who have had the opportunity to do something like this.

It’s cool, especially since a lot of the work that I’ve done is going to be on that boat.”

He was born in Montana while his father served in the military. The family stayed in the state for about two years before moving to England and then to Virginia.

McNulty, who has worked at Newport News Shipbuilding for about eight years, isn’t the first shipyard welder in his family. His late grandfather was a welding supervisor and worked at NNS for more than 30 years.

“I told my grandfather I wanted to come to the shipyard and asked if he could show me the ropes as far as welding is concerned,” McNulty said. “He was really excited because he loved to weld.

He even built stuff outside the shipyard in the garage. He was welding every day even if he wasn’t here. He instilled that passion in me because now I love to weld. I can’t think of anything else I would rather do.”

McNulty said he enjoys and takes pride in the work he does every day. He also looks forward to seeing Montana completed and delivered to the Navy.

“We’re doing what we have to do to give our military tools to help protect our country,” he said. “It’s a tough job, but at the end of the day when you see what you’ve done, it makes you feel good inside.”

Parking and Transportation Updates New Barrier Installed at North Hidens Parking Lot Entrance As a result of employee feedback in regards to potential safety concerns at the entrance to the North Hidens Complex, located off Warwick Boulevard, the company has installed a new barrier to restrict traffic flow to a one-lane entrance. The purpose of the barrier installation is to enable traffic flow into the lot and to eliminate the potential for collisions. Employees who park at Hidens were notified of the change last week and barriers were put into place over the weekend. All traffic flow will now exit the parking lot at the north end of the Hidens complex.

Career Pathways Hosts "Bring Your Daughter to Work Day" Twelve young women between the ages of 16 and 18 recently had the opportunity to explore career opportunities at Newport News Shipbuilding during Career Pathways’ “Bring Your Daughter to Work Day.” The young women – daughters of shipbuilders from across NNS – and their parents toured the shipyard, learned about Integrated Digital Shipbuilding (iDS) and The Apprentice School and participated in hands-on demonstrations.

Rodney Gilchrist Sr. (X84) has worked at NNS for more than three decades and was excited to bring his daughter Jordan to the event. “I tell my daughter this is a great place to work,” he said.

Jordan Gilchrist hopes to follow in her father’s footsteps, attending The Apprentice School and beginning a career at NNS. “The tour gave me a different perspective of what he does every day,” she said. “More people should know about the opportunities in the shipyard.”

Chad Hairston (X71) and his daughter Endya Vines also participated in the event.

“She’s about to turn 18 and graduate from high school,” Hairston said. “It was so important to me to bring her to this event because I wanted to open her eyes to the opportunities here. “Various company leaders contacted us in regards to concerns employees were expressing about the Hidens entrance during crew talks,” said Adam Zydron, director of Facilities Engineering. “We appreciate the feedback and hope that this change will make the entrance a lot safer for all drivers.”

Increased Patrol in Residential Areas Near the North Yard Shipbuilders are reminded to be considerate of Huntington Heights residents and children in the North Yard vicinity. Recently, the city and Newport News Shipbuilding have been contacted by several residents in the area regarding excessive speeding, significant cutthrough traffic on side streets, as well as company and oversized vehicles traveling in residential areas of the neighborhood. NNS participated in a Town Hall meeting May 10 with the city's Department of Engineering, Newport News Police and Huntington Heights residents to discuss issues and resident concerns. As a result, police will increase patrols and strictly enforce traffic and parking regulations in the area.

Huntington Bridge Project to Begin June 4 The city of Newport News will soon begin a project to replace the Huntington Avenue bridge. Recently, the city granted a notice to proceed to the vendor that will be responsible for performing the work. The current start date for the project is June 4, with completion of the project anticipated in June 2019. Though the start date for the project is June 4, the bridge will likely not close until mid-June as preparation work (such as installing detours, signage, traffic signals, etc.) needs to be complete in advance of the closure. Employees should pay close attention to signage, detours and markings. As additional information becomes available, it will be communicated to employees.

Motorcycle Parking Beside Dorothy to Be Expanded Due to an increased number of employees utilizing the motorcycle parking lot located beside Dorothy, the company is increasing the number of parking spaces in this lot from 32 to 50. Work to repaint the lot is scheduled for Friday, June 1 – pending weather. As a result, the lot will be closed to motorcyclists June 1 and will reopen Monday, June 4.

AROUND THE YARD Relay For Life is June 1 Newport News Shipbuilding is partnering with the American Cancer Society to support this year’s Relay For Life fundraiser with a goal to raise $50,000. Events will be held June 1 from 5 p.m. until midnight at Tabb High School in Yorktown and from 7 p.m. until 2 a.m. at Chesapeake City Park.

New ERG Hosting Launch Event Thursday Newport News Shipbuilding’s workforce is composed of shipbuilders who represent several generations. This dynamic mix presents both challenges and opportunities for the company. A new employee resource group (ERG), the Generational Integration Focus Team (GIFT), is committed to fostering understanding and communication among employees from different generations.

All shipbuilders are invited to attend a launch event for the new ERG at 4 p.m., Thursday, May 24, in Bldg. 520-6 (James River Room).

Shipbuilder Steering the Way Tho Dang (E84) was recently honored with an On-the-Spot Ethics Award for reporting a safety concern.

While reviewing work isolations for a tag roll on USS Gerald R. Ford (CVN 78), Dang discovered that there were tags missing from an active tagout that could have resulted in water entering a tank where mechanics were working. He took quick action to protect the safety of shipbuilders.

Mary Cullen, vice president of Nuclear Propulsion, recently met with Dang to present the award and thank him for taking action.

“Every tool in the shipyard comes through here, so we’re able to see a lot of different problems and try to correct them,” he said.

X36 Trade Director Dave Vandegrift thanked the shipbuilders for their role in reducing injuries at Newport News Shipbuilding. “Since we started safety improvements, our actual injury numbers have declined. The company as a whole experienced a 50 percent reduction in injuries between 2012 and 2017,” he said.

“That is pretty remarkable, and it shows that the improvements developed by this team and others across the shipyard are making specific tasks easier and safer.”

The four raised money and rappelled down nine stories at Holiday Inn Newport News at City Center. The event brought in more than $36,000 in support of United Way Pathways Out of Poverty. That figure includes the
