ABOUT BALBOA ISLAND

In 1909, with permission of the Orange County Board of Supervisors, William Collins moved his small dredge to the eastern part of the Newport bay, a mud flat called “Snipe Island”, and begin cutting a channel along the north side of the bay across from the Pavilion, piling the sand and silt up on the mud flat and thus Balboa Island was born.

From the very beginning, Balboa Island was a summer vacation place. Once an island of just summer cottages, Balboa Island has become one of the most expensive places to live in California. Although much has changed, much has stayed the same and fortunately, many of the homes on Balboa Island are still “summer homes” or year-round vacation rentals.

Balboa Island offers a nostalgic treat for those Southern Californians lucky enough to have visited its temperate climate over the years. Marine Street offers shoppers a mix of highend retail, quaint dining, and local artistry and famous fare such as the Balboa Bar and the frozen banana. You can play cards at the front corner game table while watching the Catalina Island Catamaran ferry passengers to and from Avalon, take-in a movie from the comfortable couch and chairs surrounding the TV, sit and read a book in front of the open fire, or rock the night away in the front view chairs staring out at the lights and sights of Newport Harbor after dark.
