Lakeshore Artistry
Mancelona, MI
The elegant symmetry of this lakeside estate is the centerpiece of a legacy camp that will house generations of family and friends. Melding custom timbers and metalwork, the home celebrates both strength and warmth. Centered around a substantial stone fireplace and towering window wall, there are ample views of the water and woods waiting to be discovered in every nook in the house.
“The experience was awesome. For me, it was the commitment to doing it, the attention to detail and perfection. The team on site, and how they put this massive structure together, was incredibly impressive from my standpoint and from a technical standpoint.”
“On the practical side, New Energy Works is as professional as they get—they’re on time and deliver and install the timbers with a high level of customer service. Equally important is that New Energy Works is sensitive to what we are trying to architecturally create and work closely to achieve what we are asking.”
A stately entryway to Acadia National Park, this 11,000-square-foot legacy building is the central hub for national park travelers from all areas and walks of life. This heavy timber project was funded by private and public support and features 460 individual timbers and 85,000 board feet of material. Using traditional joinery, steel, large trusses, and a few custom-made eyebrow curve glulams, the up to 42' long timbers span the gateway building with a structure that equals the uniqueness of the park’s surroundings.

“[The Gateway Center] is one of the highlights of my 40-year career, for sure, because it’s been so long in the making. It’s a complicated mix of partnerships,
Indian Lake, NY Mountain water, crackling fires, and custom timbers are the hallmarks of this legacy home in the heart of the central Adirondacks. Highly crafted geometry, tasteful tectonics, and North Country earth tones provide intentional detailing that lets this home stand alone as well as assimilate into its wilderness surroundings.
“Once we do something we’re the type to do it at highest quality. I love curves, and that’s how we connected with New Energy Works. Balzer & Tuck knew that was their specialty, so we started to bring them into the whole design. It was an iterative process we enjoyed.”
What We Do
Timber Framing
This is our genesis and our heart. We have spent four decades building a balance of craft, efficiency, and engineering. We focus on delivering the best timber frame in the industry. "Deliver" is the key word. The craftspeople who fabricate your posts and beams are also those who raise them anywhere in the United States.
High-Performance Enclosures
With our 30+ years of sustainable building and manufacturing history, we have developed a unique insight into off-site panelization that has inspired us to help others build to a high level of performance. We partner with architects and builders to evaluate the schematic designs of a project and optimize them for offsite fabrication, resulting in the ability to execute resilient passive houses and high-performance buildings.
Mass Timber + Glulam
Partnering with architects and builders around the country to incorporate mass timber into their projects is our specialty. Whether we are crafting curved glulams for a residential timber frame home, manufacturing and installing commercial glulams for industrial spaces, or sequencing and raising Cross-Laminated Timbers (CLTs), our crew of craftspeople work to make your project go smoothly from start to finish.
Design
It all starts here. Whether you are the designer or architect, bring us your professional design, or hire us to do it for you. Your project is very important, and very unique to you.
Build
Highly crafted construction is in our DNA. We have over 30 years of general contracting experience in a diverse range of projects. This is our joy and, more importantly, a continual education by instituting new technologies, learning improved job management, and understanding smart and challenging clients. We incorporate all of this into our work, and you benefit at whatever level of build you need us for.
Fine Woodworking
We call this group NEW woodworks , and for more than 20 years, these craftspeople have developed and fabricated the finest and most challenging cabinetry, doors, stairs, and furniture. It was a natural evolution to bring in these consistently in-demand skills for our projects and clients.
Pioneer Millworks
For more than 30 years, our sister company, Pioneer Millworks; has been inspired to develop creative reclaimed and sustainable wood flooring, paneling, decking, and siding from their East and West Coast mills. They offer several species, grades, textures, and color options for architects and designers that are easy for builders to install and have a story that homeowners can connect with. Most importantly, they provide natural building material options that are healthy for people and our planet.
“I can't tell you how nice it is to see a team that works together as a unit, is clean, and respects the safety aswpect of what we're doing. Oh yeah, and builds an awesome building!”
— MARK PHISTER, ROCKFORD CONSTRUCTION
“There’s no doubt that New Energy Works is a step above other heavy timber companies. Their communication and ability to share sketches for us to use early on allow us to nip issues in the bud. To have New Energy Works say, ‘Yeah, it can work and here’s how,’ makes for a good partnership.”
— BRETT BALZER AIA, BALZER & TUCK ARCHITECTURE
“The timber frame crew got that sucker erected in record time. It looks amazing and I’m beyond impressed!”
— SEAN M. SMITH, CEO, STARFIRE LUMBER CO.
“Their attention to detail is at a very high level. I am always awed by the fit and finish as we wrap up a project. They deliver when they say they are going to deliver, and they have excellent field staff to complement the output at the plant. During the design process they are very helpful working through details and overall concepts. We couldn’t be happier with their product, and our clients couldn’t be more pleased with the results. It’s been a great relationship, and we look forward to many more projects together.”
— CARLTON H. HOLMES, AIA, LEED AP PARTNER, HOLMES KING KALLQUIST & ASSOCIATES
“New Energy Works took the time to hear our needs and ensure that our design requirements were clearly understood and executed. Their professionalism is exceptional; every team member is courteous, knowledgeable, and responsive. Additionally, their creativity is truly impressive.”
— ED AND MOLLY SHILL, HOMEOWNERS
“The collaboration with New Energy Works went really well. They stayed on the timeline and processes were smooth. It was easy to get in touch with the team and go back and forth with ideas, especially when we got to the important step of finalizing timber finish and color.”

— AMORY SUSCO, BUILDER,
"Thanks everyone for the multi-variable collaborations. This is what it takes to deliver quality housing!"
— KEVIN KELLOGG, GORMAN AND COMPANY
“I like how early I can get New Energy Works involved in a project, in terms of their comfort making cost projections with not-a-ton of information. It’s helpful for when you’re not far into engineering but you’re trying to get a handle on feasibility. And I like that it’s all in-house; so from a predictability standpoint, you don’t have to wonder what that number is going to be.”

The Beauties of Wood
Let us tell you a little more about how wood works, and what makes it so special to us.
When we say one of our core tenets is The Beauties of Wood, the plural is intentional. There is so much to love about wood as a building material. The flowing grains, graceful curves, and dynamic range of adaptable colors that make wood visually stunning, but there is far more to wood than meets the eye.
