from the Headmaster New Plymouth Boys' High School has been founded for ninety years and in that long spell of time it has had but five Headmasters.

In this, my first year as Headmaster, I inherit control of a School with proud traditions and redoubtable achievements in all fields of endeavour.

This is a school with a magnificent setting, expansive grounds and all manner of facilities. In all that surrounds me are reflected the wisdom and foresight of my predecessors and their devoted efforts in association with staff members and boys of the School.

But progress and change are very much part of education today.

The most obvious indications of change are in the physical sense as displayed in the completion and occupation of the Hall and the Alexander Block or in the establishment of Taranaki Polytechnic as a separate entity in the tertiary field.

For staff members the changes in subject content or in the subjects offered, in the methods of presentation and evaluation, in all aspects of organisation and control are most apparent. Constant review and e x perimentation are needed and undertaken. This keeping abreast of educational trends and change places heavy demands on staff members individually and collecti vely and I am fully appreciative of the efforts of my colleagues .

For the boys, influenced as they are by their environment and limited e x perience, the advances made may be less perceptible. Progress always appears slow to those who are eager and enthusiastic, but in all respects the education of the pupils today is in advance and broader in concept when compared with that of those who have gone before.

The aim of the School is to educate young men to take their place in the society of today and tomorrow . For this to be achieved all of us who are members of the School community must give of our best as individuals, constantly striving to better our attainment and our contribution in all spheres, academic, physical , cultural and social.

I trust that we, and those to follow us , can and shall work together, exercising self-discipline and concern for others, to make this a better place in which to live.

In his address at the senior prize-giving this year , the Headmaster commented on the fact that, for the first time in many years, there had been no losses of staff during the year . Between the end of 1971 and the beginning of 1972, however, there were a number of changes not recorded in our last issue.

The opening of the Taranaki Polytechnic as a separate institution meant that a number of members of the B.H.S. staff transferred , severing their conr.ection with this school.

We wish all of these gentlemen well in their new venture and offer them our sincere thanks for their contributions to the life of the School.

As a consequence of Mr . Wilson's transfer, the position of Deputy Headmaster of the School fell vacant, and was filled at the beginning of the year by Mr. J. A. Clouston. Mr. Clouston, an Old Boy of the School, joined the staff as Head of the Technical Department in 1953 , having come from Hawera High School.

Mr. A. N. Wilson, who had been at B.H.S. for 16 years , was appointed Director of the new Polytechnic .

During his years at the School, Mr. Wilson was a senior science teacher , senior housemaster in Pridham for five years, head of the Science Department, and finally Deputy Headmaster in 1970 and 1971. He played an active part in coaching and refereeing Rugby, in producing plays and in managing the old stage in the gymnasium, with its complicated and potentially lethal lighting system; anybody else trying to manipulate it would surely have been electrocuted!

A keen Old Boy , Mr. Wilson was President of the Old Boys' Association during two crucial years , 1966 and 1967, when planning for the Alexander Block and new assembly Hall was at a crucial stage.

We congratulate Mr. Wilson on his new appointment , and also on his award of a Woolf Fisher Travel Grant, just announced .

Another long-term member of the staff to transfer to the Polytechnic was Mr. I. B. Scales, who served the School for 24 years , the last eight as head of the Building Department, responsible for the teaching of woodwork at School and for the training of building apprentices at the Technical Department. As well as playing a full part in numerous extramural activi ties of the School , Mr. Scales put in many hours of voluntary work in providing his expert services to other school groups , notably the Drama Club , for whom he built scenery and other properties over the years. We congratulate him on his new post as Deputy-Director of the Polytechnic.

Mr. J. W. Walton had been on the staff for five years, having joined us in 1967. Though he worked mostly at the Technical Department, he was well known to many boys at the top school as a hockey coach and a housemaster in Pridham .

Mr. A. V. Tomasi joined the staff in 1968, taking most of his classes at the Technical Department as a motor instructor. He was responsible for introducing water sports to the school, laying the foundations for the Aquatic Club and the new Sailing Club.

Although they did not teach at the top school, Mr. A. M. Gesterkamp and Mr. N. Walwyn were both m9mbers of the Technical Department, and have now transferred to the Polytechnic; Mr. Gesterkamp in charge of the School of Commerce and Mr. Walwyn of the School of Agriculture .

As Head of the Technical Department, Mr. Clouston was largely responsible for a dramatic expansion in our evening classes and apprentice classes; of recent years, the total roll of these extension classes exceeded that of the main school. lt was due in no small measure to Mr. Clouston's advocacy and to his efforts in organising a number of advisory committees and promoting the cause of tertiary education that the Taranaki Polytechnic was founded. Mr. Clouston became an Executive member of the Technical Education Association in 1970, and for many years was an organiser of the Taranaki Apprenticeship Week and of a number of apprenticeship committees. We congratulate him on his appointment and tru:;t that he will continue to enjoy his new position .

In Term Ill we welcomed Mr. A. C. Hart, who arrived from England to teach science .

At the end of the year five masters will be leaving us . Mr. D. H. Bennett will be transferring to Spotswood College to gain co-educational experience after three years in which he has taught Geography and Social Studies and played a very active part in the coaching and organising of Rugby and cricket .

Also remaining in New Plymouth will be Mr. D. J. Borland, who will become eo-secretary of the Y.M.C.A. Mr . Borland has taught French and Commercial Practice and has been an assistant housemaster in Pridham.

Mr. W. D. H. de Zeeuw, who arrived from Ireland in 1970 to teach Geography and Social Studies, has accepted a post with the Rhodesian Department of Education. A teacher of Geography and Social Studies, he has also been an active coach of sports teams, and this year senior housemaster of Carrington .

Returning to his native California is Mr. G. E. Mulliner, yet another geographer who plans to further his knowledge by taking in Australia, Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore , Thailand, India, Nepal, Iran, Turkey, Greece, Italy , France and England 路on the way home!

On 21st October we we re shocked to lea rn of th e sudd en dea th of Mr. Archibald, who had left us at the end of 1971 to become Deputy Prin c ipal of Gl endowi e Coll ege , Auckl and , but had com e bac k with Mrs . Archibald on w hat he desc ribed as "a se ntimental journ ey " to attend th e ce leb rations markin g th e openin g of t he new hall. He had bee n at th e opening ceremon y and at t he smorg as bord on t he Frid ay evening, w here he had renewed many old fri end ships w ith gre at pl eas ure.

As Mr . W . E. Al exa nder said in a morning tribute at St. Andrew' s Church, Mr. Archibald had "a very spec ial place in t he hea rts of t hose w ho ca ll ed him friend " .

PRIZE GIVING 1971 Th e 1971 Prize-Giving mark ed the end of an era in two ways: it was Mr. W . E. Alexander's last prizegiving after 36 years service to the School, and it was the last of the many occasions on which the ceremony has taken place in the Opera House; from this year, prize-giving s will be held in the new Assembly Hall.

Although t able tennis did not enjoy such a good season , the pl aye rs w ho did atte nd were of a hig h sta nd ard or learnt very fast . Th e c lub met regu larl y on Monday and Thursday aft ernoons from abo ut 3.30 p.m. to 5 p .m. in the Gymnasium, thus enabling players of other sports to come along on their non-pra ctice nights.

Spec ial mention mu st here be made of Mr. Rattray and Mr. Anker for taking over , m aking things run smoothl y and efficie nt ly .

The Badm i nton Club, unlike th e Table Tennis , had a very good season , with th e beginners enj oying th e (lame w ith two great regulars, G. Hart and R. Th om son.

The hi ghli ght of the season was a competition against Hamilton Boys ' High . After so me rea ll y tough games the tea m, P. Briggs , K. Col e, J. Mell s and M . John ston , had a r esounding v icto ry of 6-0 , dropp in g on ly one game . Play was held in t he gym.

The championships were held midway during th e Good entr ies third term and we re keenly co ntested. were rece ived all round and s howed the s lowly in c r eas in g popular ity of the sport .

Success at 1st X I level was lim ited . Although blessed with a number of capab le indiv idu als it was rare to see them all com bin e effectively ; too often laRses w ith the bat and in the field saw apparent v i ctor ie s s li p away in to drawn games or eve n losses, as was C lu b form w as essentia ll y the case at W ell ington . patchy; although ac hi ev in g parity with most other t ea m s t he fin al points t able (71 -72) indic ated a lowly posit ion, due in part to brittle batt in g and the occas iona l l apse i n the fi eld. v. Wanganui Collegiate (Played March 1972) Captain N. Johnston invited Collegiate to bat on a slightly damp School wicket w ith the expectat ion of early life for the medium pacers. Thi s bore immediate dividends when the top four batsmen departed for 45 runs, and at 103 for eight Collegiate were poorly placed , P. Mackie (34) being the only batsman to resist. Inexp licably, Collegiate carried on to 198, E. Kight (41).

Cawthray departed ear ly the next day for 24 wh il st C. Vernon cont inu ed from his overn igh t score of fifteen to reach 35 before being run out. Batting extrovert N. Johnston carved out a hard hitting 55 but an abysmal lower order co ll apse saw all advantage lost, the innings closing at 197, a one run deficit on Collegiate 's total.

A great deal of cred it must go to Wanganui in its praiseworthy attempt to ach ieve a result . In declaring at 103 for 8 (Johnston 4-28). both teams had good chances. In the quest for quick runs the top order batsmen swung indiscriminately , st ill leaving School short of its objective. The final score of 85 for 7 left

Lower Grades 2nd XI: Long standing coach Mr. L. V. Giddy has finally stood down .

Nursing many young cricketers to 1st XI leve l, his services w ill be sorely missed, but in his place comes Mr. L. K. Denton , who needs no introduction and wi ll undoubtedly give equa ll y valuable service.

With an eye to 1st XI select ion , a number of young er players are included in the team.

M. Donaldson is proving his potential with the bat as is M. Broadmore, w hil st leg spinners M. Torrens (who. I'm told , possesses an exce ll ent wrong 'un) and M. Harrop (who is also a capab le bat) show consid erable promise. ' Oldies' Steve Moss, Paul Meuli and Dan Hannah provide stability with both bat and ball.

Th e batting, however, is inconsistent, due to the relative in experience of the young er players, but cricket at this leve l w ill sure ly cure th is.

Third Grade: Comprises two teams .

The social side in wh ich Barden , Clark and Murray come to the fore play for enjoyment and that is someth ing they certa inl y get.

School's first inning s fared littl e better in declaring at 175 for 9.

Both openers departed with less than ten runs on the board, leaving C. Vernon and Johnston to co nso lid ate, scoring 55 for the third wicket. Johnston, in an exuberant mood, thrashed out 42 runs before falling victim to an extreme ly controversial run out decision. Vernon batted solidly for 39 but it was left to tail end ers M. Smith (15) and R. Batley [24 n.o.] to overhaul Nelson's total.

At this point the lik elihood of an outright decision appeared remote as Nelson would have to chase quick runs, but accurate bow ling by Webber (4-27) and P. Whitwell (2-9) spread-eagled the Nelsonians for 109 [J. Rackley 56). A reasonable target of 100 runs in better than even time remained , but the School innings was rocked by quick bowler G. Heinemann who extracted considerable lift from a previously placid wicket. Three School batsmen came and went with only four runs on路 the board, leaving B. Cawthray (28 run out) and D. Webber (34) to restore respectability w ith inimitably sou nder methods in their 4th wicket partnership of 60.

With time now at a premium middle order batsman A. Tichborne (15 n.o.) drove lust il y, ach iev ing School 's objective w ith two overs remain in g.

v. Wellington College (Played March 1972) Throughout the years the Wellington College 'track' cou ld be relied upon to produce an outright result ; this year proved to be no except ion but Wellington turned the tab les, winn in g for the first time in a decade and a half.

Schoo l won the toss and elected to bat with the expectation of a crumbling wicket on the final day.

This turned out to be of no immediate worry for School deteriorated with the wicket, tumb lin g for a meagre 98 runs (R. Bott 23). In reply , Wellington battled determinedly to 130, estab li sh in g a handy 32 run lead, N. Johnston just missing an honours board performance in captur in g 5 Wellington wickets for 34 runs from eleven overs . At this juncture in time School's position was shaky but the diffi cu lty was compounded further with the loss of Shearer 's w icket shortly before stumps.

Bott, Vernon and Johnston followed quickly the next day, but B. Cawthray with a patient 27 and J. Cameron batting confid ent ly for a bright 41 retr ieved the situation to some degree but another collapse saw School out for 128, requiring a Wellington score of 99 for the outright. This st ill appeared a demanding task for the wicket had played many tricks during the match and certainly wasn't improving.

A team of three, R. Hogg , P. Ritchie and T. Shearer entered th e in ter secondary schoo ls gym champs . R. Hogg competed in th e 'A' Division (those who have competed in National Gym Champs) and in all apparatus was placed second to Gary Walker of Spotswood Co ll ege.

1st HOCKEY XI

Early in the season N.P .B.H.S. had a marked success in the annua l five-a-side tournament at Pering a Park, The 'A' team , consist in g of W. Binni e, R. Barker, W. Tay lor , P. Best and A. Lane . won the Under 19 sect ion , beating Opun ake B in the final 3-0.

Competition games brought mi xed results . School had wins against Stratford H.S . 6-0, Spotswood 2-1, Stratford H.S . 9-0, Hawera H.S. 3-1, and losses to Opunake H.S. 4-0, Hawera H.S. 2-1.

Th e 2nd XI report is very dismal. After some mammoth double-figure loss es, interest waned and the team J. Archer disbanded half way through the season. showed keenness and played for the 1st XI at the tournament .

In its first competition match aga in st Wanganui Collegiate , School played atrocious hockey to be trounced 7-0 . School was rocked back by Wanganui's first three (:]Oals com in g in ten minutes and neve r rea ll y recoverd.

Wanganui exp loited to the fu llest the large gaps in the midfield defence , which was a worry all season. Goalie Gunderson also had difficulty in c lea rin g from the sawdust laden goalmouth .

As if to redeem itse lf, two days late r School played the best hockey of the seaso n in defeating compet ition wi nn ers Opun ake H.S . 4-3 in a thril lin g match. For the first t ime School played the agg ress ive. co hesive hockey it was capab le of. and rather stun ned the opposition.

R. Barker and R. Haywa rd were the stars of the match .

In its second col lege match, School lost to Wanganui Boys' High (who had previously defeated Wanganui Col legiate). School matched Wanga nui but the latter made the most of its chances and won 3-1. G. Haywar,d goaled for N.P.B.H.S. School defeated Stratford 4-0 and Hawera 7-0 (a good win) in the last round to finish in seco nd place in the local compet ition .

Once again , School played atrocious hockey in its final co llege match aqainst the strong Hamilton Boys ' School's defence was hopelessly High School team. out of position at crucia l times and Hami lton won 7-0.

School's play improved noticeably in the second half to prevent an embarrassing double-figure loss , but an uncohesive forward lin e was unable to score.

To round off the season School participated in the Inter-Secondary Schools ' Tournament at Stratford during the August holidays. A lhough not winni ng a game, School , an und erstrength team nevertheless put up some cred itable performances and managed to hold its own against some strong teams. Garth Hayward [playing in goal for th e first t im e th is season) brought off some incred ible saves and contributed considerab ly to School 's be ing able to hold its own .

Th e 1st XI never (except agai nst Opunake) played to its fu ll potential. Th e team conta ined some very good individual players . but perhaps this was the main problem , for School never played as a co he sive team.

The School "A" Team in action

Indoor Basketball This year several basketball records were broken , w ith an exte nsive Hous e compet ition , two teams in the loca l compet ition. a third form squad and increased boarder participation .

The standard of basketball improved markedly in every. team which played; house and competit ion games scoring into the forties and fifti es were common, indic ating t he qual ity of basketba ll produced .

During the second term house co mpetitions got under way, w it h A teams exc lud ed. Thi s proved unfair, as many of the teams were unequal . However, in the th ird term , with A team members included, play began

Page 30 in earnest: eight teams were fielded, including two from Moyes , Carrington and East.

Competition was even throughout, with two points for a win and a bonus point for a score over 40. This bonus point proved interesting, and East and Moyes made the best of it.

The final points tally was: East 14, West 14, Moyes A 12, Carrington A 8, Pridham 6, Moyes B 6, Carrington B 4, and East B 0. In the play-off East beat West 27-23.

The standard was high in the final, indicating the allround improvement of all players.

This year we had two teams in the Basketball Association's competition, the A team playing in the A Grade (the first time since 1969) and the B team in the C Grade. The B's won the C Grade by six points, while the A 's finished third equal. A notable feature of the A team's play was two wins on the last day of the competition. All players performed well to beat Burfrasco and IWD Jestas .

The A team played nine college games , including one rematch with Hawera. The squad was: B. Baillie , M. Belavskis , M. Clearawter (captain). S. Harvey, B. Manning, B. Roebuck, W. Tuki and G. Williams.

On 15th July we held a tournament in New Plymouth. attended by Church College (Hamilton). Hamilton Boys' High , Tongariro College , Spotswood College , Hawera High School and N.P.B.H.S. We defeated Hawera 52-31 , but lost to Church College 87-36. Our first trip away

was to Wanganui Collegiate, where we were defeated in a slow game , 37-22 . Revenge, however, was obtained when we beat Wanganui Boys' College 37-5 at i'lew Note: this reversed last year's results.

Rowing

This 'year produced a great improvement in the number of boys who won various awards in the 197172 season; a total of 110 boys passed different awards.

This year three boys gained the Society's second highest award , the Distinction. They were H. W. Rauputu, H. P. Clark and G. R. Hart. A total of four boys gained the Award of Merit: they were G. R. Hart. H. P. Clark, R. J. McCaughan and H. R. Phillips.

Sixteen boys passed the Bronze Cross with three bars to Bronze Cross, six passed the Senior Instructor Certificate, thirty-seven the Bronze Medallion and forty-one the Resuscitation Certificate.

The School this year was represented at the InterSec. School Life-Saving by one team of T. Power, S. Milne, M. Phillips and P. Thompson, with H. Phillips as Instructor. They were awarded the Butcher Cup for the best boys' teams .

Congratulations to T. Power and S. Milne on ¡winning the Smith and Easton Cup at the annual swimming sports, and thanks to Mr. Rattray and Mr. Dobson for giving up their time afer school in helping the boys to pass the examinations, and for all the organisation they put in to help these boys gain the various awards .

On 5th August we travelled to Hamilton, only to be defeated 48-24. Unfortunately, the referees failed to show up, so two impromptu refs attempted (without whistles!) to control the game.

The week after the August vacation saw us in Hawera for the Taranaki Inter-Secondary Tournament We won our section by beating Stratford 41-8, Hawera A 28-26, and Hawera B 58-12. In the final the strain began to show, with Boys ' High going down 26-47; Spotswood had that little bit extra to take the game.

Our final record was : 5 wins, 4 losses, 304 points for and 301 against.

Our special thanks go to Mr. Mulliner for his time and expect coaching , and also on occasions for joining in as a team member; to Mr. Rattray for his organisation of the House competition and his services to basketball over the years; to Mr. Borland and Mr. Francis with their respective houses; to Peter Dalton coaching the B's to victory ; and to Jock Neville and Mr. Hoben for their work with the third form squad.

From the beginning of the year the club has been keenly supported. it is good to see so many juniors and intermediates rowing so keenly. Mr. Speck's bus, fully laden with upwards of fifty boys, has been transporting the oarsmen to the School rowing sheds at Waitara on three afternoons a week, where vigorous rowing is followed by sprint training through the school grounds to get to tea on time. (We did once.)

The club seems to have acquired squatter's rights to Room 26, which at different times of the season was partially filled with heaps of riggers, stickily varnished oars and miscellaneous pieces of unidentified boating hardware. Most of this went into the reconstruction of damaged boats, as the club's aim has been to get as many crews on to the water as possible. Our 'fleet ' now consists of four eights and four fours.

Our first regatta was held at Karapiro on Anniversary Weekend. The first Eight, Colts Four, Junior A Four and Junior Eight were entered. On Saturday School had its first race in the senior event with the first Eight and found that a small improvement was necessary.

The Colts Four worked hard to gain fourth place and the Junior Eight, starting well and fighting their way through the field , arrived at the finish in third position.

The first Eight then split into two fours and the crew, stroked by 0. King, gained third place after a hard fight with the other senior school crews.

On Saturday, March 18th, the club rowed in a regatta at Wanganui . The first Eight bettered their Karapiro effort but just missed out on a place in the final. The crew consisted of 0. King (stroke). After a bad start the third Eight rowed well to gain a hardearned fo urth place . Pra ise shou ld also go to an Eight of third formers who rowed in the same race and produced a ve ry cred itable performanc e considering this was their first race.

The Maadi Cup regatta at Christchurc h marked the close of the season. The c lub was represented in all three events. the Maadi Cup Eights , the Springbok Shield Fours and the Intermed iate Eights . The crews left on Wednesday afternoon and travelled to Wellington by

bus, where they spent a night at t he Hutt Park Motor Camp and in the morn ing boarded the Maori for the trip down to Lyttelton . The f irst Eight rowed wel l aga inst the other senior crews but were beaten on account of their small size and were un able to ga in a place in the final. The First Four were hampered by the condition of their boat and the Second Eight, cons iderably younger and sma ll er than the oppos ition crews, were outc lassed . lt was noticed and well appreciated that Old Boys from Carr ington and Pridham were giving support to the crews from the far bank.

Our thanks must go to Mr. Sargent who has stirred boat repa iring, fitness the boys up in eve ry way training, and t ak ing car loads of boys out to Waitam for extra pract ices.

FIRST FOUR UN DER THE WA ITARA BRIDGE

Rugby This year School fielded 22 teams in the Saturday compet itions. For the First XV the Senior B matches proved to be a good preparation for the college matc he s although the sta ndard was not as high as in prev ious years.

Geoffrey Old, No . 8 for the Firsts, was selected for the North Island Under 18 team to play the South Island , whi le Neil Johnston, First XV fullback, was selected for the Junior Centurions . Eleven members of the First XV were chosen to represent the Taranaki Secondary Schoo ls A team: N. Johnston , R. Manson, J. Cameron, P. Brooky, G. Old, D. Willis, B. Middl eto n, J. Barden (captain) , S. Moss, B. Newton and R. Fay. School also had a good repres entation in both the Taranaki Under 18 and Under 16 teams. Under 18 A team: J. Cameron, B. Middleton, G. Old, J. Barden, B. Newton, R. Foy. Under 18 B team: P. Fi eld, R. Manson, P. Brooky, D. W il l is. Under 16: P. Jackson. R. McCarthy, J. Lockwood, K. Bolstad, P. Broederlow , B. Kjestrup.

In the lower grades a number of successes were recorded . The lntersec . B's were undefeated in the Secondary Schools B Division , and other successful

teams were: School Gold (first) and School Black (secon d) in the 5th Grade A Division; Schoo l Moyes (second) in the 6th Grade; School Black (third) in the 8th Grade A Division; and School Carrington and Schoo l Moyes first equal in the 8th Grade B Division .

FIRST XV The XV had a successfu l season w ith one loss in its seven college games. an undefeated tour of Fij i and a good record in the Taranak i Senior Third Divi sion .

With the exper ience of the Fij i tour beh ind them and the dedication of Mr. Carroll , the boys gained som e impressive victories in the early part of the season , but deteriorate d slightly during the latter part; this may be attributed to the f act that the Fiji trip and the increased number of college games made it a lon ger season than usual.

This yea r's team re lied he avily on the lineout potent ial of the forwards, whose mobi lity around the field was a noticeable feature. The backs ' greatest strength was their abi li ty to throw th e ball around.

The Fiji tour was an outstanding success, the team be ing undefeated in the ir four matches. Twelve day s were spent travelling around the main isl and , Viti Levu. and the island of Ova lau . The game against Ova lau Combined Schools. at St. John's on 10th May was notable in that it was probably the f irst time a School it was far First XV had taken th e field bare-footed . from easy; the School team, being eve nly matched in the first half, found it difficult to adapt to the conditions.

Scorers for School were N. Johnston , R. McCarthy, C. Ridland, P. Broederlow (2) with tries, and N. Johnston with two conversion s.

Against Fiji Combined Secondary Schools, at Buckhurst Park, Suva , on 13th May, School won 15-12. Thi s

was a game where School rose to the occas ion, t he mo st noticeable feature being the tack ling. An early try by J. Cameron resulted from a blind side movement.

Fiji equalised when hooker Pita dived over to score.

Eight minutes later P. Field outpaced his man to put School ahead 8-4 at half-time . In the second half J. Bradburg scored for Fiji to make the score 8-8, and minutes later the Fiji prop, Mosese. dived through a wall of defenders to score again . Only five minutes before full time G. Percival dived across the lin e from a loose ruck to put School equal. and then, when Fiji was penal ised, N. Johnston landed t he f irst kick of the day to finish the game: School 15, Fiji 12.

Two days later, on 15th May, against Ratu Kadavulevu Schoo l at Ratu Kadavulevu, School went into an early lead when D. Willis scored after running the ball from a pena lty . N. Johnston converted: 6-0. Then R.K.S . put on the pressure. spinning the ball along the ir hardrunning back line and scoring two tr ies before half-time: 8-6. In the second half School gained va luable ground from R. Bott's kicking, which enabled Johnston to kick two good penalties. Towards the end School's fitness enab led us to dominate up front, and fina l po ints came when R. Foy scored after Willis broke from a lineout, making the final score 16-8 to School.

Page 34 Against Marist School, at Marist School on 17th May, Marist went into the lead after scor ing and converting from a back movement: 6-0 to Marist. Then School gained a penalty kicked by J. Cameron . Marist came back after charging down a clearing kick to make the half-time score 10-3 in their favour . At the beginning of the second half Johnston started to close the gap with a penalty, though Marist opened it up again with a further try : 14-6. School went on attack now, and P. Field scored a try, followed by another try by Cameron.

Thi s was converted by John sto n, giving School a 16-14 win and an undefeated tour.

We owe special thanks to all Old Boy s in Fij i, to St. John 's School, to Ratu Kadavulevu School , to Marist School and to numerous billeters for their help and support of the tour .

Back in New Zealand , the First XV had a busy seaso n. On Queen's Birthday Weekend, at Napier, the XV entered one of the best seco ndary school tournaments eve r held. Four teams were entered: Gisborne B.H .S., Napier B.H.S ., Palm erston B.H.S. and N.P.B.H.S. Two weeks previously Napier had brought back the celebrated Moascar Cup after a tour up north. School , being outright winners, returned with the cup, only to lose it to Wanganui Collegiate after successfully defending it against St. Pat's .

School played two games at the tournament, against Gisborne and Palmerston North. The Gisborne gam e resulted in a 37-6 win for School , due largely to domination by our forwards , who put Gisborne und er const3nt pressure . With tries by Brooky and Field , and two conve rsions and a penalty by Johnston , the score at

half-time stood at 15-6, Gisborne having taken full advantage of School's errors . In the second half , w ith a combination of clean lin eout ball, penetrating runs, quick rucking and accurate kicking, School added a further 22 points, making the final score : School 37, Gisborne 6. Points in the seco nd half we re scored

by Foy, Manson, Rowe and Fields, with tries, and Johnston with two penalties .

In the other game, Palmerston 's domination in the lineout was co untered by School's rucking and secondphase play. This was a more closely co ntested game, in which Manson , Barden and Johnsto n scored tries for School agai nst one penalty to Palmerston . Th e final score was : School 12, Palmersto n North 3.

St. Pat's Silverstream (Hicks Park, Hawe ra , 8th July) St. Pat's reputation as a highly-rated team this year made School all the more determined to win. Two early penalties put Silverstream into the lead, but a well placed kick and run by Field enabl ed him to sco re a try, which was converted by Johnston , to make the half-time score 6-6. In the second half a penalty by Johnston, followed by a left foot potted goal by Cameron and yet another dropped field goal from 40 yards out

by Johnston put School in a comfortab le position. A try by Moss , converted by Johnston, and another try

by Foy, as aga inst an unconverted try by Guppy for St. Pat's , brought the final score to: School 25, St. Pat's 10.

Wanganui Collegiate (Wanganui, 20th July) School went into this game far too confident and were soundly beaten. In the first half the game was

1st XV v. ST. PAT'S evenly contested , with School getting the territorial advantage . Collegiate opened the scor in g with a penalty by their captain P. Young, but Old equa li sed with a penalty to make the half-time score 3-a ll. In the second half Collegi ate won more and more ball and, instead of trying to run its well marked backline in the fac e of strong and positive School marking , kept play close to their forward pack and used the high ball to great effect. The first try came about half-way through the second half when, more as a result of weak defence than anythin g else, Wanganui's w inger Darrington scored in the corner. The game was clinched for Collegiate about ten minutes before th e end when Collier scored from a scisso rs movement. Young converted to mak e the final score: Collegiate 13, School 3.

THE MOASCAR CUP RETURNS

Te Aute (Gully Ground, 29th July) After losing the Moascar Cup the previous week, lt School went into this game determined to win. scored eight tries and mastered possession in every facet of play. Te Aute's early resolve was weakened by three School tries in the first 14 minutes. Johnsto n at fullback weakened the Te Aute defence with his hard running in the back lin e; as a result he scored three tries, as well as three conversions and a pena lty, to gain a personal tally of 21 points.

Te Aute scored a try just before half-time and a penalty ear ly in the second half.

At half-time School led 17-4. Then in the seco nd half it enjoyed almost total territorial advantage, the backs making classical sweeping runs to keep Te Aute scrambling .

Hamilton B.H.S. (Gully Ground, 5th A ugu st) School went stra ight on to attack, but bad mistakes and lack of backing up cost us ground and opportunities.

Although John Cameron crossed the line twice, he was held up and cou ld not score. Then Hamilton put on pressure, but good tackling by our backs, aided by Middleton and Willis, kept the Hamilton backs out.

Just before half-time McCarthy made a solid tackle which sent the ball loose inside the Hamilton twenty-five.

From the following broken play Manson made a go od break, and from the resulting maul Foy scored in the corner . This mad e the half-time score 4-0 to N.P.B .H.S. Early in the second half School almost scored when Hamilton allowed a drop kick to bounce under the bar; Manson was over the line , but the Ham ilton defence prevented him from forcing down . School had trouble in the lin eouts, giving away frequent penalties, and from one of these the Hamilton hooker, Haywood , kicked a pena lty goa l : 4-3 to New Plymouth .

For the next 20 minutes both sides made mistakes , and close marking gave neither side advantage . Then Johnston kicked a penalty from in front: 7-3 with ten minutes to go.

From then on it was forward domin ation by School and good play by the Hamilton backs. The game ended after a couple of good breaks were desperate ly stopped by the School backs. The final sco re was: School 7, Hamilton B.H.S. 3.

The game was played in perfect conditions and from the beginning the School forwards won a good share of the ball and dominated second ph ase play. N. Johnston opened the scoring when he came into the backline after the forwards won a ruck nea r the Grammar line.

In the second half School we nt onto attack but failed at first to score points because of constant mistakes 路 poor marking by the backs also allowed the Gramma; backs to relieve the pressure. After a rather shaky start, due to injuries, peop le leaving the team and promotions to th e First XV, the team finally setled down to play some very good Rugby. lt beat all its riva ls except Waitara and Hawe ra. Many prom ising players went through th e team during the Captain Stuart Glass stood out most as a season. player, leadi ng the team by example, while B. Cawthray turned in some exceptional games at fullback , and R. Bott was an extremely reliable, big-booting first fiveeighths. Locks G. Campbell and D. Harv ie were the powerhouse forwards , dominating many lineouts. while K. Bolstad and M. Smith were the hard working tight forwards .

The college game against Hamilton B.H.S. First XV was pl ayed in very humid conditions. The Hamilton pack outweighed the School pack, though they did not have the stam ina of our lighter pack . For the greater part of th e first ha lf Hami lton dominated, scoring a controversial try and kicking a penalty goal. The second half, however, was all New Plymouth 's; we ap plied pressure throughout this half, but were unable to score until R. Nicholas scored a well-timed t ry under the posts in the last 10 minutes. When this was converted

by R. Bott the team's morale was boosted cons iderably.

lntersec B's Th e B's had another successful season, w inning all their games. Despite losing S. Kjestrup and R. Newland to the Group and B. Neill through injury, the team settled down to play some fine Rugby. Baty, Fisher, Stallard and Phillips were the powerhouse of the forwards, w ith Sutton, Dick and Shearer (captain). getting good lineout ball. The loose trio of Hann ah, Price and Ries consistently turned in good games, giving the opposition plenty of troub le. Murray and McCaughan combined well to give good service to th e outside backs, whi le B. Paul at second five-eighths was top sco rer with 21 tries and made many penetrating runs. On the w ings , Chamberlain and Strawbridge were determined runn ers , whi le S. Wri!]ht an d B. Kjestrup we re more than safe.

In the middle of the season a Third XV was se lected w hi ch in clud ed nine B players.

We must thank our coach, Mr. Bennett, who gave up his valuable time to make this season a most enjoyable one.

I ntersec C 's After a bad start, the C's had a good seaso n from wh ich they emerged with more wins than losses. In the forwards H. Rauputu showed hi s strength, ably supported by captain P. Horrock s, P. McDouga ll , D. Baxter, and R. Samuela played consistently in the backs.

r-curth Grade Thi s year's team was made up mainly of last year's successful Fifth Grade Black team . l t proved it had abi lity at the start of the season but form dropped towards the end.

Although the forward pack was noti ceably smaller than its oppos ition on many occasions, it performed very well. The captain, Chris Burn, was an outstanding leader in the loos e, abl y backed up by J. Phipps, L. Brown and W . Hill . J. Smart and B. Goodey worked well in the tight, while P. Lightbourn e won c lean lin eout ball.

B. Whiting and R. Horne proved to be valuable hookers .

The backs, with a similar comb ination to last year's , were always dangerous. especially with K. Bennett and G. Jam ieson making many attacks. M . O'Neill and C. Hill backed up we ll , w hile D. Radford at fullback was' more t han safe, often venturing into the backline and also proving his kicking ability .

Th e team was well represented in the reps, w ith C. Burn (captain). K. Bennett, G. Jam ieson, D. Radford, B. Whiting and M. O'Neill.

Nevertheless, it was an eve ntful game, and School came out on top 10-4. Tri es came from Kj estrup and Dreadon , w ith a convers ion from Radford. Th e team was we ll led by M . Herdman at halfback and S. Ries on the flank.

Junior House Rugby The Jun ior House competit ion this year mainta in ed the high standa rd disp layed in prev ious years.

Both semi-fin als were tense and highl y exc iting, all teams prov in g to be eve nl y matched . Moyes ran out the w inn ers against Carri ngton by a slender 10-9 margin , whi le Pri dham defeated West 13-6. Thu s the scene was set for yet another interesting final.

Moyes and Pridham met in good conditions on the Gu ll y; with Tansey scor in g for Moyes and Somerton for Pridh am , the sco re was locked at 4-4 at half-time .

Early in the second half Moyes poured on the pressure and with a lead of 11-4, seemed to have th e game sewn up. But Pridham struck back ga ll ant ly; Beverwijk kicked a penal ty and Harr ison scored in the corner , making the full-time score 11-a/1. In extra time , Pridham conc luded an epic struggle with another Beverwijk pena lty from in front of the posts, making the final score: Pridham 14, Moyes 11 .

Ski-ing Earl y in the yea r a ski club was formed by a group of boarders w ith Mr. Bor/ and as Master-in-C harge. The members hi p comprised mostly boarders, wi th so me day boys .

Only one trip was held , halfway through the seco nd term. We had hoped that more trips could be held, some in co njun ction w ith the Girls' Hi gh School, but because of poor snow co nditi ons , bad weather, un ava il ability of buses and ove r-a ll Jack of support, t hi s was not possible.

On our one t rip , snow co ndi tio ns were average, hut the weather was overcast. However , we all thoroughly enjoyed ourselves .

In th e highl y competiti ve field of sk i-rac ing , boys from this sc hool did extreme ly we ll . When one considers the fact that most races are open to seniors, intermed iates and juniors, an impressio n is gai ned of w hat our boys are up aga in st . Th ey are dedi cate d, train for month s t hrough endl ess slalom and giant slalom poles , put all their money into ski -rac in g, risk their necks and often in the end face defeat.

Senior House Rugby This year's title was won by Carrington by default from East. In the fi rst round East eas il y defeated Pridh am, wh il e Carrington had a harder task in beati ng West by 15-6. Th e second round game between Carrington and Moyes was t he v irtu al f in al, w it h Carrington's sup eri ority in the forwa rd s the dec id ing factor in their 11-3 w in.

Several lapses at cruci al stages prevented the 1972 season from becoming an unprecedented success; as it was the First XI acqu ired the Egm ont Trophy, the Dr. Brown Shield and, by w inn ing 18 out of its 25 matches, finished runners-up in t he Julian Cup co mpet ition.

On reflection, the Mt. Albert match proved the most memorable, t he th ree-goa l win nin g margin be ing the most conv in cing and most deserved in thirty years of rivalry. However , th is cou ld not be recorded as the sin gle satisfy in g achievement, as the over-all showi ng in the Tara naki competiti ons improved co nsid erably on past years, althou gh fading w ith victory in sight. Lower Grades in After School had found it difficult on occasion s this 1971 to field two teams , a resurgen ce of interest year provided plenty of players for f ive teams.

Second Grade was the socia l team, includin g a number a of senior boarders. Surprisi ngly, perform ances were definite improve ment on prev ious years, with a number of close games . In the Fourth Grade , two eve nl y matched teams had conan interest ing and enjoyab le season, with closely skill tested games and a fair share of success . The well and enthusia sm of many of these players augur for future School teams.

Page 42 teams from Auckland, Hamilton, New Plymouth and other centres. Although the team won only one game out of four, the boys all enjoyed the trip . Key positions were: T. Wetere as pitcher, Lightbourn e as catcher, and McCarthy and Edwards on fir st and seco nd bases respectively. The w hole team p layed well, and should be even better next year w ith greater experienc e.

Th e junior softba ll teams played well in their Saturday competitio n games. A great improvem ent was shown by the end of the season, with the School Juniors w innin g the Waitara Softba ll Tourn ament. More than 25 boys took part in junior games this year.

Steeplechase The annual Cross Country Champion ships held on Frida y, October 6th, proved to be a very successfu l meeting. Despite rain in the morn ing, the course was in a reasonab le condition and some excel lent times were recorded .

15 sec. This clipped 45 sec. off the previous record and indicates the cons id erable potential of this lon gdistance runner. R. Baxter ran with determina tion to finish second in the promising time of 17 min. 9 sec ., while F. Tansey was not very far away in third position.

S. Newton, the 1971 Junior champ ion , ran wel l off hi s hand ic ap of 80 sec. and was the first runner home in the Intermedi ate section. On amended times he was placed second. R. Barker ran strongly to fini sh second and record third fastest time. Fastest t ime was recorded

by W. Wright, who was also th ird to finish.

The Intermed iate house compet ition was closely contested w ith Moyes (520 points) a narrow victor from Carrington (492) and Pridham in third place (253) .

The outstandin g Junior was S. Lowri e, who finished third but recorded the fastest time. His time of 11 min.

6 sec. was only 19 sec. off the record.

Junior house points were won convincin gly by East House with 603 ; second was Central (319) and third Carr in gton (267).

NORTH ISLAND INTER-SECONDARY SCHOOL SWIMMIN G SPORTS Mr. Rattray took a team of two swimmers down to the North Island Sports. Th e two members of the team were R. Rid/and, who competed in the 200 and 100 metres Freestyle, and J. Clark, who competed in !he .100. metres breaststro ke . He was placed fourth 1n h1s fmal.

Our thanks to Mr. Rattray who has put a great deal of time and effort into th e coaching and organisation of sw imming in the school .

SURF LIFE SAVING R. Rid/and, Senior champion , was a memb er of th e Old Boys ' Junior Surf Life Saving team which took two gold medals and a bronze meda l at the Nation als . Th e School also had two Old Boys, Trevor Corkin and Warren Glow, who were memb ers of the New Zea land team who competed against the Australian team at Oakura Beach last February.

Grant Vou ll aire was a member of the Fitzroy Club's Junior 4-Man team wh ich won this year's New Zealand title .

Tramping Th e club had quite a successful year, though a lack of response during the latte r half of the second term and the third term resulted in seve ral ca ncellation s.

The problem of numbers was so lved by having smaller parties for the more enth uiasti c boys.

During th e year the maste rs in charge were Mr. Morton and Mr. Tracey, while M. Davidson (Club Captain).

A. Konijn (Secretary -Treasure r). K. Billing, L. McDouga ll, C. Molloy, R. New/and , R. Samue/a, A. Wilson and S. Bruce were the Committe e, elected at a meeting at th e beginning of the year of about 90 members.

Highlights of the first term included the Summit trip. This climb was made in excellent conditions , and everyone made it successfu lly to t he top. After this came a bushcraft weekend at the old clearing at earrington Cottage; a group of sen iors conducted the course, w hich proved very successfu l.

Trips during t he second term in clud ed a Kaitake traverse, a White Cliffs trip, and a Bells Fall s-Stony River trip. The White Cliffs tr ip was tiring but most en joyab le; when we arrived at our destinatio n we had lunch , and then senior members and severa l juniors did rocksca ling and carr ied out safety precaution s.

Third term trips have includ ed two different traverses of th e Pouakai Ranges, the first being the Plymouth- Kiri Track and the second up the Maude Road Track and down the Kiri Track.

Further tramps planned are a Lake Dive trip, a t ramp from North Egmont to Puniho Road, and a trip from Stratford through Waipuku Hut to North Egmont. Other possibiliti es may include Fantham's Peak and a KahuiOaonui trip .

This year School tennis has retained the high standard set last year, even though we lost our to p players.

The first event of major importanc e was the Taranaki Secondary Schools ' Champion ship held at Stratford in the first term. We entered four singles players and two doubles pairs, of whom R. Manson is to be highly commended for reaching the final of the si ngl es alo ng with C. Hone and G. Dunn for reaching the doubles final.

Following this the annual inter-colle ge fixture betwee n our School and Hamilton Boys' High was played on our hom e co urts. Our team comprised R. Manson, K. Bennett, G. Dunn , C. Hone, A . Beverwijk an d P. Winter . After the sing les had been played we were down two t o four in the number of victories, but good doubles play resulted in our winni ng all three matches, making the final result five matches to four in our favour. A good effort by both teams.

The next visitors were Wanganui Collegiate , who played a Boarders' team of R. Manson, G. Dunn , C. Hone, A. Beverwijk , J. Lo ckwood and R. Baxter. In an almost clean sweep we won by eig ht matches to one.

Intern al fixtures resu lted in W. McDonnel l winning the third form tourname nt, K. Burg ess taking the Junior Singles title and T. Roguski taking the Intermedi ate singles.

In the second term, because of a change to Sunday play in the local competitio n, our players have been catered for by c lubs where some are ga ining va lu able experienc e playi ng 'A ' grade.

At the time of going to press the House tennis was being played and the Day Boys v. Boarders match , the Senior Champion ships, a return match against Wanganui Collegiate , while games against Palmerston North Boys' High and possibly Te Awamutu are coming events . i t is hoped that the high performa nces alre ady prevalent this season w ill cont inu e to show up in these matches.

Th anks are due to Mr. Sine/air, who has devoted much of hi s spare time to organising the boys' tennis, and to the Headm aste r , who has fostered interest in the spo rt by all owing the t ies with club tenn is.

Volleyball Ag ain this year, the volleyball club was not part icu larl y active. However, we managed to field a team in two secondary school tournamen ts , the first of which was the Taranaki Inter-Seco ndary Schools Champion ships. This was held on April 15th at Spotswoo d College, but there was a disappoin ting number of teams entered. With only two other boys ' teams to play aga inst, the School team, cons isting of R. Mackay , D. Mackay, J. Norton , R. Pearce, J. Bolton and J. Klenner, won its two matches quite comfortab ly to win the tourname nt.

In the May holida ys , from May 17th-19th, the National Secondary Schools Tourname nt was held in Wellingto n.

Th e same team was entered, and sinc e our sc hool had never entered a team in th is competitio n, we werff put in the 'B' Division. After many hard, but enjoyab le (lames during the three days, it was announced on the Frid ay that we had come seco nd.

During the second term , the boys in the school team, with the help of Mr. Rattray, tried to promote so me interest in volleyball by leaving the gym open on Wednesday lun ch times for boys to try to improve the ir play and lea rn a bit more about volleyball . This, however, was unsuccess ful.

Most of the boys from the schoo l team are playing in another comb in ed team at the Y.M.C.A. on Monday niqhts , where a req u/ar week ly competit ion is held, and play has improved considera b ly .

Smok ing is deadly ; it kill s if done enough. I think of smok in g as rotten as stea lin g from your friends. lt stinks! If you hav e started and you ca n 't stop, you might as well kill yourse lf, and save the suffering you go through later in your li fe. I think smoking is just not funny . I tried it and I loved it. After a week my breath was rotten, I had smelly hands.

Th en I got caught. That wasn't funny, either . I was to ld that in late r life I would be very good as a sportsman. So I stopped.

I was ashamed to look at my mother and father . I thought I had fin ished my life, but it was only the start of a great life. I tha nk myself for stopping when I did.

As in previous years, the Company was involved w ith the training of Stage 1/ cadets and instruction was given in foot drill, weapon training, map reading, first aid an d elementary bushcraft. Most of the training had a bias towards Stage Ill instruction .

The Company used both the School's .22 range and the Rewa Rewa .303 range and some excellent scores were recorded, particular ly with the lighter weapon .

A high standard of training was reached in all fields and the cadets · were well prepared for their year in A Company.

C COMPANY As in previous years, there was a high standard of capabi lity in C Company this year.

C Company once again had an exce ll ent standard of shooting, with most boys gaining high marks on the .22 range.

Mr. Sargent this year joined C Company and was assigned to No. 4 platoon. His capabi lity can be seen in that his platoon was the only platoon in C Company to gain the flag for marching.

G. Towler was aga in C.S.M. and Lt. Currey was in charge of the N.C.O. platoon. U.O .'s V. Hutchinso n and P. Winter were put in charge of No. 2 and 3 platoons.

Congratul ations to Lt. Col. M. Carroll on his appointment as C.O. of the Battalion , and also congratula t ion s to him, Lt. E. Meuli , Maj. R. Sinclair and Lt. 0. Oats on gain ing the C.F.M.

D COMPANY Once again D Company had a very successfu l year of training Stage I cadets. The range of topics in cluded weapon training, drill, field craft, first aid, and map read ing . A very high sta nd ard was reached by most boys in these activities, which was shown by the fine performan ces on the Anzac Parade and in the basic tests.

A large number of boys from the Company attended courses at Linton Camp and had a high degree of success in gaining the rank of se rgeant or corporal .

The highlight of the year was the parade in October when Cadet Force Medals were presented to two of our Company Officers. Th ey were the O.C., Major R. Sinclair, and 21.C., Lieutenan t E. Meuli. Also congratulations to the other officers who als o gai ned the C.F.M.

A.T .C. Thi s year the squadron carried out an interestin g programm e under the guidance of Flight Li eutena nt Abraham, D.F.C. , Pilot Officers D. de Zeeuw and A. Tra cey, an d U.O. Penn, who was with us over barracks week, but later in the year joined the Royal Air Force and is now in London .

Congratul ations to Mr. Tracey on gaining his commission, an d to Sgt. Bone, who passed his U.O . course.

Although the squadron has dropped from five flights to four, the standard of drill has rem ai ned high. Thi s reflects upon the good officers and N.C.O.'s who all gave their full energy.

Th e training sy llabus of aviation studies, foot and rifle drill , general service knowledge , bushcraft and weapo n training was carried out in the three di fferent stages of cadets. There were also two shoots foi' senior cadets on the .303 rang e as well as the school's .22 range .

The use of films to implemen t the syllabus wa s appreciate d and added variety .

A number of cadets are going to Ohakea Air Base in January for a Juni or N.C.O. course.

REWA REWA RANGE Thi s year under the control of Lieutenan t Oats, with the help of Range staff R. Pyselman, D. Cooper. S. Moss, P. Kay, W. Hill , B. Newton and R. Vink, shooting was carried out under close survei ll ance.

During Barracks Week shooting was done on the 25-yard range with A and B Companies and A Flight of the A.T.C. B Company again shot over the 25-yard range in Apri I. On the last two days B. Company and A Flight were again shooting, but this time over the 200-yard range.

Th e general shooting thi s year was of average ac hi evement.

.22 RANGE Under the guidance of Li eutenant Jennings, Regular Force Instructor s and the range staff. comp risin g P. Brooky, G. Price , H. Clark and G. Percival.

Shooting this year by the Stage I cadets went we:! and was up to the usual standards of previous years .

CLUBS AND ACTIVITIES Astronomy A total and partial eclipse of the moon were viewed this year, the former providing a rather colourful spectacle.

Comet Bradfield , an unspectacu lar yet interest ing comet, was located in April and its position was plotted along the star-charts for almost a month.

Several members, in associat ion with other groups from the New Plymouth and Tikorangi observatori es , Two of these attempted three Grazing Occultation s. were successfu ll y recorded and th e results forwarded to the Royal Greenwich Observator y . Some excellent views of the planets Jupiter and Saturn were obtained but Mars was too far away to be usefully observed.

Weather during the middle terms was rather frustrating and several meetings had to be cancelled.

The Marsland Hill observatory was visited on two occasions during the year.

Congratula tions to our c lub secretary, Chris Fuller, who has recently been elected Assistant Director of the New Plymouth Astronomic al Society .

A number of our members have already had a glimpse through the large 58 cm Cassegrain Reflector at Tikorangi. The installation of this new telescope will greatly enhance the scope of work which can be undertaken in the future .

From this ladder we were ab le to put together twelve of our best players to form three teams, wh ich competed in the Taranaki championsh ips at lnglewood in September. Our over-all placing was third. lt has been said that the rapid and staggering growth of interest in chess was due to the Fischer-Spa ssky tournament , but our records show that we had larg e Although a few numbers even before this match. heads were turned during their games, a real study of their play was not undertaken by our own club, although individu al members may have benefited from a knowledge of these world masters.

Since the first term the standa rd of play within the c lub has gone up perceptibly ; boys have had the opportunity to play many others and have slowly learnt the finer arts of the game, expanding their range of attacks, defences and counter-att acks. lt is good to know that this sport is sti ll thriving since its origin some 1500 years ago.

Debating Interest in debating has been s:ngu lar ly lac king this year, and in sp ite of chal lenges from Spotswood College , and the efforts of Club Secretary A. Wilson, it ha s proved impossible to rais e any teams.

Drama Chalet Classroom All fourth forms spent a week at the Stratford Mountain House during the first term .

A similar programme to those of previous years was followed; severa l classes this year were fortunate enough to be ab le to make Summit climbs .

The thanks of the School and boys go to all those who assisted in any way with the smooth running of this year's courses.

Chess Over the past year we have seen the Chess Club grow from a mere handful of enthusiasti c boys to over 30 members, each paying an annual 20 cents sub; we found that even with a gracious $5 grant from th e School we had insufficient to buy sets to occupy all members. Hence boys had to be content at times to watch others pl ay .

The club meets in Room 24 every lunch hour . This has been found to give ample time for a few quick games or one of the longer cha ll enge matches .

We have started a chess ladder, and boys are able to work their way up it by cha ll eng ing those higher up . A cha ll enge compr ises three games and the winner of most points wins the cha ll enge; L. England tops the ladder to date.

For the first time in eight years the School was not represe nted in the British Dram a League 's competit ion.

Our production, "Bernard Shaw in Heaven", which had shown considerab le promise during rehearsals, had to be withdrawn when one of our leading players took ill during the final week .

Th e staging of the house plays in the new assembly hall on 1st November generated tremendous enthusiasm .

For the players, however, this presented some environmental problems , both with stage sets and voice projection , though valuable exper ience was gained. The House Play Trophy was presented by Mrs. Cramond to V. Hutchinson , producer of East House 's imaginative winning play, "The Vigil ". The cast included R. W .

Pearce, C. Bromley and V. Hutchinson . " Perfection City " , with a hippy-philo soph ica l theme, took second place , and was produced for West House

by D. Marks . The cast included, besides D. Marks , I. Bastion, K. Marsh and T. Jones. " The Man with the Newspaper " produced by K. Glennie for Carrington , was an enjoyab le comedy, gallantly undertaken by a youthful cast with S. Cullen , T. Bartlett, S. Harkness, M . Marsh , A. Fisher, J. Young , M . Gregory and M. Phillips.

For Pridham House , "The Monkey's Paw" was well Presented by T. Coddington , assisted by G. Dunn , M. Tolerton, R. Ordish , M. Gulliver and J. McCaughan.

Th e section s on Lib era l Studies and Conserva tion conti nu e to grow, and an attempt has been made to keep up with recent publicatio ns in jun ior and senior f iction. In all , over 300 new books have been acq uired this year, wht~e anoth er hundred have been donated.

Th e greatest numb er of rea ders seem to come from t he junior schoo l , where examinati on pressures are not so great. With expa nsion of assignme nt wo rk in t he se nior schoo l , suffi cient reference works must be provided . Th e New Zealand co ll ect ion conti nu es to grow and must be one of t he best co ll ect ions in a schoo l li brary.

Fortnight ly displays have been continu ed , material from our own shelves being supp lemented by loans from the National Library Service. Th e display on the Olympic Games was perhaps th e best, hav in (l been supp leme nted by co lourful posters lent by Mr. Rattray .

Unfortun ate ly some boys do not va lue t he facilities provided, and books and posters co nt inu e to be defaced at tim es in spite of v igil ance on the part of Mrs. MeLaugh/in and M asters in charge of classes. THE CHOIR

Film Club Th e club was conceived by Mr. Kre isler and D. Buxton early tn the year. At the f irst meeting, Dav id Buxton was elected President, M ike Tolerto n Secretary Martin O'Neill Treasurer , and Garry Tow ler proj ection ist: Th e Committe e was : Richard Power. Philip Colema n, Rob Pyselman, and Denny Cooper.

Mr. Kreisler and M r . Franc ts were Masters-in -Charge.

In ord er to hire a reasonabl e number of film s (costing about $25 each) it was decided to ama lgamate w ith n film club 1n process of formation at the Girls' High School. Th e subscr iption was fixed at $2 .

Th e clu b started off w it h "Ye ll ow Submarin e" on 28th Apr il. At this stage the club seemed very healthy With over 200 members and nearl y 300 atte ndin g t he films; 1t was by far the strongest club in the School both num eri ca ll y and financially . Its origina l aim wa~ to acqua tnt stud ents w ith the history and developm ent of ctn ema and a genera l und erstanding , on a critical level, of f ilm as a medium.

lt soon beca me apparent. however, that the films screened were fa r too intellectua l for most members, who had obvtously expected f ilm s of entertainm ent value only._ Thi s dissatisfa ctio n was expressed in poor behavtour which spoilt it for those enjoying the films .. After several warnin gs to those guil ty of mi sbehaviour , the c lub carried on and comp leted a progr ~ mme of fil ms.

Th e club th is year has been fair ly slow owing to lack of membersh ip. Despite t his, we have ac hi eved so mething : we organi sed an appea l in the School for the liferaft fund, raising $70, and a further $25 was donated by the club itself. We have aided the landscap in g of the School by re movi ng an old hedge and bamboos. A car rally run by the club was qu ite successful and enjoyed by most. Towards the end of the year a mufti day was held to raise funds for va riou s org an i satio ns.

Durin g the August holid ays t hree members attended the Interact Conferenc e at Pukekohe and learnt much.

We hope that next year the club w ill be stronger; it offe rs both en j oyment and satisfactio n to those who are w illin g to help others .

Music Thi s year has see n an all round improvem ent in t he st andards ac hi eved w ithin t he Music Departme nt.

To sta rt a very bu sy year off, t he choir performed at the Bowl of Brook lands after onl y two weeks of preparation. lt was felt that a weeke nd of intensive practising would help maintain the high standards set by last yea r 's choir , so in t he th ird weekend of the school year some twe nty-six boys spe nt a very str.enuous tim a lea rning new mu sic at th e Stratford Mountain House. This effort obv ious ly paid off and the choir was given a tre 路 mendous reception at its first rec ital for the yaa,- at

Taih ape. Whilst in Taihape the Choir al so presented a short recita l at Taihape College.

The ad judi cator at this yea r' s an nu al John Dobson Inter- House Music Competiti ons was Mr. Jordan Rogers.

Apart from the fact that entries were thi s year up quite considera bl y, the sta nd ard of performan ce had noti ceably improved on the previ ous two yea rs.

This Music Dep artment this year repeated its idea of perform in g at va rio us pr im ary schoo ls throughou t Taranak i . The various aspects demonstra ted at these music appreciat ion co nce rts were brass instrum ents, woodwind instrumen ts and various qualities of the hum an voice. All schoo ls v isited expressed their desire for the venture to be repeated.

Later in the seco nd term we had a visit from the band and orchestra of Palm ersto n North Boy's Hi gh School and a combined rec ital in t he Old Assembly Hall proved to be very successfu l.

Th e offic ial openi ng saw the use of a fanfare of trumpets. the School band, a spec ial Schoo l choir and orchestra both augmente d by Old Boys and the use of our magnifi cent new Bose nd orfer Grand Pi ano . Th e Frid ay even ing saw a very successful Music Champagne and Chi cke n evening (or so we are told!). Perhaps one of t he most impressiv e musica l events in the history of the School was the Dedication Se rvice in the Li st Ch ape l on the Sun day afternoon of the Labour weeke nd .

A large congregat ion was obvious ly ve ry impressed with the sta nd ard of music prese nted. This serv ice , in t he form of a choral Evensong, was later sung at St . Mary's An(l li can Ch urch, New Plymouth, and Hol y Trinity, in Stratford.

A highly successfu l trip to Wellingto n gave t he Cho ir the opportuni ty of presenting a rec ital at S't.

Th e success of the cho ir is at tr ibutab le to the guidance and direction of Mr. and Mrs. Gibbs, and to both we offer our sincere thanks.

Woodw in d classes have been very successful aga in th is year and the tutor, Mr. Rogers. has from t im e to time, sun g in the choir.

Probably the most successfu l new tutor group to start th is yea r has been the drum classes held during t he first and seco nd term .

If the sta nd ard of the new record recently released is any indication of what can happen musically in the School next yea r , the f uture of music at N.P.B.H.S. looks very good.

Undoubted ly the most excitir.g occasion of the year ha s bE:en the ope ni ng of the new Assemb ly Hall. The open in a ceremony was performed before a capacity aud ience on Frid ay, 20th October, 1972, by the Prime Min iste r, the Rt. Hon. Mr. Marshal !. His comment that "this is the fin est schoo l hal l in the country" could hard ly be disputed.

Th e an noun ceme nt that th e new classroom block was to be known as the "Alexa nd er Block" after Mr. Th is was W. E. A lexa nder, was also well received. in recognition of a lifet ime's devotion to the school he began ns a pupil many years ago, then became a staff member and finally retired as Headmaster last year.

On the Friday eveni ng a reunion was held in the Westown Motor Hote l and Old Boys and their wives found this a most en;oyab le evening. A spec ial gettogether for those who had supported the musical side of th e school was nlso held, and much apprec iated.

.1\ctivit;es m d News Once aga in the Annua l Old Boys-O ld Girls Cabaret was held in the Girls' High Schoo l Assemb ly Hall on 19th August. While we can not boast a profit as we did last year, we can say it was a very good show.

No doubt these occasions wi ll benefit from having our own hall - watch for t he next one!

AUCKLAND Fun ctions held so far th is year in clude the Annual General Meeting in Jun e and the Biennial Reun ion after the Auckland Grammar game in August. Th e latter was a ve ry successful eve ning w ith 70 Old Boys present.

Th e Branc h we re especially pleased to welcome the Headm aste r, Mr. Cramond. and appreciated very much hi s effort in atte nding . We were also privileged to enjoy the co mp any of Mr. Cooper, th e Auckland Grammar Headm aster.

Major item of news of Old Boys in the city is the appoi ntm ent of Mr. John Graham as Headmaster t o succeed Mr. Cooper next yea r . Thi s is a great honour perhaps we w ill for Mr. Graham and the sc hool have a spy in t he opposition camp at last!

The Auckland Branc h donated a stage lectern to t he new Assembly Hall during the year as their contr ibution to the drive for funds. Thi s was raised from individu als as we ll as from genera l branch fund s.

At the time of going to press the branch was planning. in co njun ction with the Old Girls , a Cabaret to be held in November.

SOUTH TARANAKI Thi s branch had its Annual Meeting on 17th May. with a sma ll atte nd ance - once aga in Ormond Greens1ll was elected Pres id ent.

Brian Marsden and John Dean attended the recent Olympic Games in Munich . The pupils of the schoo l contributed to a co ll ection taken to help finance their trip.

Pete Dixon recently retired from the arm y and ;s now Secretary-M anager of the Parapara umu Golf Club .

P. McBride - afte r war service in the R.N.Z.A.F. he settled in Sussex , w here he now grows mushrooms commercially. lan Launder - after severa l years in Military College at Duntroon he served five years in Malaysia. More recent ly he has held staff appo intm ents at Army Headquarters and in th e Mini stry of Defenc e. Currently he is Commanding Officer of 1 Battalion R.N.Z.I.R. Depot at Burnh am Camp. He is married with one daughter and t hree sons.

Th e four O'Halloran brothers , who attended school between 1916-1930, are all in fine fettle .

V. A. Blance was appointed headmaster of Fitzro y School in New Pl ymouth this year.

Peter Saunders is t he canoe capta in · of the New Plymouth Old Boys Surf Club. They have a new surf ca noe, spec ially built of fibre glass and donated by the Pukekura Li ons Club , and ca ll ed "Pukek ura" of course.

Th e usual successful Golf Tournament was held at Te Ngutu on 25th Jun e w ith an increased fi eld of 94 Old Boys taking part. Winner of the McNaught Cup was B. McAIIum from B. V. Dee and C. Miller. R. B. McKay had th e best nett and in the teams matc h A .

King, I. Thom pso n, T. Watson and C. Ekdah l were eventu al I. Jensen won t he veterans prize. All in w inn ers. all, an exce ll ent tournament w ith the usual good weather.

The Annual Dinn er was held in the Ha we ra Club after the St. Pat's match on Jul y 8th. A very good turnout of Old Boys en joyed the conviv ial atmosp here at the Club . Of particular pleasure to many Old Boys was the opportunity to meet the new Headmaster, Mr. Cramond.

G. N. Roberts is the president-elect of the Internat ional Air Transport Association . He wi ll hold this top aviat ion post for a yea r , and is we ll known for his efforts to develop tourism in t hi s country as chairman of Air New Zealand.

Charlie Robb , a sta lwart in our branch for many years ,has shi fted to Taup o.

Jim Ross, is now t he Superintendent of Curricu lum Development in the Edu cat ion Department.

Tony and Roger Gibbs are both married and farm in g at Alton.

The Rev. G. F. McKenzie, director of the Presbyteri an Social Service A ssociation in Christchurch has been named Moderator-designate of the ch urch .

Dr. Arthur Veale wi ll be the first head of the Department of Community He alth at the Auckland University Medical School. He is at present Professor of Hum an Genetics at th e Otago Medical School , and is internationall y known in t hi s field .

John Gmham has been appo inted as the new hea.i master of Auck land Grammar Sc hool for next year. He is remembered as hea d prefect and capta in of the 1st XV and 1st XI during his time at schoo l.

Paul Ramsay is an A.P.D .C. and has been movin g about the Otago and Canterbury areas.

Hugh F. Jackson, M .Sc. (Chemical Eng .). who was Head Boy in 1961 , is now with the Shell Oil Company in Geelong, Australia .

OBITUARIES DANIEL DRUMMOND ARCHIBALD; in New Plymouth on 21st October, aged 54.

Dan was a highl y respected member of staff f or 24 yea rs and alth ough not an Old Boy, he was regarded as one, es pec iall y as he was t he Headmaste r 's represe ntat ive on the Old Boys' Committee over recent yea rs. (For furthe r details see elsewhere in t hi s magazine .)

NORMAN BERTRAM BELLRINGER; on 5th July , in New Plymouth. Aged 70 .

Mr. Bellringer was a prominent Freemason and cha rtered accountant in the c ity. He became a Ju st ice of the Peace in 1936, was th e longest serving member of the Vogeltown Bowling Club and was we ll known in many other field s. He is survived by his wife, his son Bri an and three grandchildren.

JOHN HERBERT BOON ; at New Plymouth on the 7th April.

Aged 68 .

Mr. Bert Boon was managing director of the building firm founded by hi s f ath er. He played for the 1st XV during hi s time at the sc,hool and the Old Boys Rugby Club later. He was a long standing member of the Among other things New Plymouth Golf Club also. he was for 17 years a member of the Taranak i Harbo urs Board and at one time pres id ent of this associat ion.

He leaves hi s w ife, son Roger and daughter Nancye.

ALFRED HENRY BOON; on the 13th June in New Pl ymouth.

Aged 71.

Mr. Boon became a director of his father's building firm until he retired a year ago. Hi s interests included Rugby and sw imming. A spec ial interest was in sawmilling and native timbers. He is survived by hi s w ife, two sons, Graeme and Gera ld , and two daughters, Vivienne and Tert ia.

RONALD ALFRED BOON; on 19th Jul y , aged 71 yea rs.

He was a member of the Schoo l 1st XV and acti ve in swimming and lifesaving in the New Plymouth Swimming and Old Boys ' Surf Club . M r . Boon was also a member of the New Pl ymouth Go lf Club for severa l yea rs. In recent yea rs he was mainly involved with milli ng operations of the family t imber merc hant firm .

He leaves his w ife and three so ns, Barry , Peter and Terry.

Aged 63 . ' Hatch ' began in the 'Prep' and spent nearly twe lve yea rs at t he sc hool along with his two elder brothers.

He w ill be remembered by many for his outstandinp spo rting ac hi evements. For examp le w hil e ca ptai n of t he 1st XI , he took 8 wickets for 10 runs in a memorabl e match aga in st Wanganui Collegiate with his medium-fast left-handers .

OLD BOYS' SECTION He also played for the 1st XV for four years, two of th em as captain. Many people who know th eir RJ.lgby have no doubt he was t he best second five eighths they have seen at the sc hool. Magnifi cent athl ete that he was, he exce ll ed as a spr inte r , hurdler and won most of t he boxing cham pi onships of the time.

Whil e he atte nd ed Otago Uni ve rsity in th e co urse of his medical ca reer, he played Rugby fo r th e University and eventuall y capta in ed the representat ive side many t im es .

DENNIS RICHARD WHITTAKER; tragically drowned at Waitara on 18th March. Aged 14 yea rs 9· months.

CHARLES (JIM) WESTON ; on 18th Octobe r , at· New · Pl ymouth. Aged 59 yea rs.

He was a World War 11 veteran-A captai n in the 19th Battalion and mentioned in despatches. Befo re going overseas, he made over 100 asce nts of Mt. Egmont, being a keen skier and member of the Tarariaki Alpine Club.

He was director of Rural Traders, and a memb er of Federated Farme rs and the Farm Forestry Association.

He is survived by his w ife, and two . daughters, ,,Mary · and Diana.
