Chichester Cinema We’re here to warm you up this winter - with some huge releases (Brooklyn; Spectre; Bridge of Spies; In the Heart of the Sea), those Chichester favourites (The Lady in the Van; Carol; The Dressmaker); the usual supply of hidden gems (SuperBob; Black Souls; Grandma) and an exhilarating collection of new French Cinema (see below).

To celebrate the Festive Spirit, why not bring the kids to the ‘Frozen Sing-a-long’, enjoy ‘The Nutcracker’ (Bolshoi or ROH), or experience Dench & Branagh’s ‘The Winter’s Tale’.

A Winter of French Cinema This season, we present no less than nine new French films to help keep us warm through the British winter.

There is a film (or three) for everyone: from Gaspar Noé’s controversial Cannes release ‘Love’, to the delightfully hand-drawn animation ‘Zarafa’; from the oh-so-Parisian comedy ‘In the Courtyard’ starring Catherine Deneuve, to ‘The Anarchists’, a gorgeous fin-de-siècle feast starring Tahar Rahim.

Four One-Act Ballets Enjoy four short ballets in one evening with this quadruple programme from The Royal Ballet. Encore transmission by satellite from Royal Opera House.

Carlos Acosta focuses on the dramatic essentials of love, jealousy and revenge in his new production of ‘Carmen’. As well as choreographing the production, Acosta will dance the lead role. Liam Scarlett has used Lowell Liebermann’s thrilling Piano Concerto No.1 as the inspiration for his similarly audacious choreography in ‘Viscera’.

Debussy’s evocative score is the inspiration for Jerome Robbins’s ‘Afternoon of a Faun’, which depicts two ballet dancers as absorbed by their own reflections as they are attracted to each other. George Balanchine’s Tchaikovsky pas de deux uses a fragment of music composed for the 1877 production of ‘Swan Lake’ for an eight-minute display of ballet bravura and technique. Dancers include Marianella Nunez, Carlos Acosta, Federico Bonelli, Laura Morera, Ryoichi Hirano, Sarah Lamb, Natalia Osipova, Steven McRae. Running time 180m including intervals.

Taxi Tehran When you are a banned filmmaker, you have to retrain. So why not become a taxi driver? Or better, why not pretend you are a taxi driver and make a film?

This is what Jafar Panahi has done. We ride through the streets of Tehran and discover its people through his various passengers. Panahi’s footage of the comings and goings – and goings on – of his passengers (a thief; a teacher; a peddler of pirated films; an injured man and his hysterical wife; a human rights lawyer) is juxtaposed with his niece’s exercise in making a short film within the Government-sanctioned code of practice, which covers everything from what characters should wear and do, but also what they should be named, and what outcomes their behaviour should lead to. This is an optimistic vision for the future of storytelling in Iran.

Nicholas Hytner has once again mined his time as the artistic director of the National Theatre to adapt a stage hit for the big screen. Here we see Maggie Smith reprise the role (brilliantly - of course) she first played in the 1999 stage production of the Alan Bennett play.

She plays Margaret Shepherd, a homeless woman who parked her van in the drive of Bennett’s (Alex Jennings) Camden townhouse.

His reluctant sense of compassion and his sneaking suspicion Miss Shepherd may turn out to be good copy, lead him to take pity and allow her to temporarily use his drive. She stays for 15 years. It’s in the mines that Peter meets Hook (Garrett Hedlund), who, at this moment in his career, is sort of a swashbuckler in the Indiana Jones mould. He even loses his hat in one telling moment near the end. ‘Pan’ is the movie ‘Hook’ should have been: frightening, weird and packed with subtext.

An American lawyer (Tom Hanks) is recruited by the CIA during the Cold War to help rescue a pilot detained in the Soviet Union.

Spielberg and Hanks combine once more (‘Saving Private Ryan’, ‘The Terminal’) to bring us this Coen Brothers written film, which received a rousing standing ovation at the recent New York Film Festival.

Hanks stars as James Donovan, the Brooklyn lawyer who bravely risks his life to covertly negotiate the release of an American spy captured after his plane pilot was shot down over the Soviet Union in 1960.

Several years earlier, Donovan was demonized for his aggressive defence of an American-captured Soviet spy whose many names included Rudolf Abel - brilliantly played by British theatre legend Mark Rylance, who may lead the field for the Best Supporting Actor Oscar. The film does a fantastic job of capturing 1950s New York in its first half, and surpasses that when Donovan travels to East Berlin.

This is a sure-fire Oscar contender, so don’t be surprised to hear the film’s title repeated many times come February 28th at the Academy Awards Ceremony.

The history of the personal computer is as much about personalities as it is about technology. Following Jobs around with moral lecturettes is Kate Winslet. Cast as a Girl Friday who doubles as Sunday School conscience, Winslet gives a doughty performance, and the PolishAmerican accent is Streep-worthy. As you’d expect from a Sorkin screenplay, the dialogue comes fast and furious. All of the action and emotion is in the spoken word. He’s the master of densely worded, smart screenplays and this is another great example.

It’s an old-fashioned story of hardship, family, love and war, elevated by the passionate, robust, heartfelt filmmaking skill of a master. The Scottish countryside becomes art with horizons reflected in lakes and fields of wheat that Malick would envy.

The peace and tranquillity he hopes to find, though, is anything but, once he agrees to being accompanied by his long lost friend Katz (Nick Nolte). The ripe chemistry between Redford and Nolte makes this hybrid adventure buddy movie a thoroughly enjoyable outing.

Moreover, it is very funny, with as many laughs as there are mishaps on the Appalachian Trail.

Temporarily broke, Grandma Elle and Sage spend the day trying to get their hands on the cash as their unannounced visits to old friends and flames end up rattling skeletons and digging up secrets. Tomlin’s performance as the irascible but compassionate Elle is superb. Toss in some lovely great supporting performances, especially Marcia Gay Harden as Judy - the scrappy mom caught between mother and daughter - and you’ve got a film that is both funny and unexpectedly moving.

Le Mépris Contempt Jen-Luc Godard’s 1963 ‘cinema’ classic featuring Brigitte Bardot at her best is beautifully restored by the BFI. Paul (Michel Piccoli) is a failed playwright hired by producer Jeremy Prokosch (Jack Palance) to work on the script of a movie by a great veteran director (Fritz Lang playing himself). The producer has his eye on the playwright’s wife Camille (Bardot), as well as a “Hercules’’style rip-off, of the director’s art film. Instinctively self-reflective, ‘Le Mépris’ is one of Godard’s brightest achievements. Made the same year as Fellini’s ‘8 1/2’, it shares that film’s anxious search for artistic meaning beyond the glamour of cinema, celebrity culture, and the ensemble spirit of filmmaking. Les Anarchistes A handsomely mounted, and even more handsomely cast, costume drama set in Anarchist circles of 1899 Paris.

This polished undercover police thriller stars Tahar Rahim (‘A Prophet’, ‘The Past’) as sensitive police brigadier Jean, assigned to infiltrate the individualist anarchist community of Paris. Adele Exarchopoulos (‘Blue is the Warmest Colour’) is cast opposite him as Judith, a passionate, persuasive young member of the movement. Jean poses as a factory worker to infiltrate the group, all the while reporting to his callous superior (the brilliant Cedric Kahn), but on a constant journey to a point where he will have to question where his allegiances lie.

The two leads are a pleasure to watch, especially with a backdrop that perfectly recreates fin-de-siécle Paris.

Einar (Eddie Redmayne) is a successful painter in 1920’s Copenhagen who is happily married to fellow artist, Gerda (Alicia Vikander). At this time, Einar is beginning to explore gender identity and with Gerda’s help, he creates a new character, Lili. At first, he simply wears dresses but gradually Lili takes over Einar’s personality. She is the one Einar wants to be. Einar is played with extraordinary sensitivity and dignity by Eddie Redmayne, who may well be in the running for another Oscar. He is a quiet and seemingly passive character, but one who notices and feels everything. Vikander is excellent as this devoted and fiery wife whose husband is disappearing in front of her, metamorphosing into a new personality.

An illustrated talk by Ellen Cheshire Definition: Bio-pic aka Biographical Picture – a film that depicts the life of a real person, past or present.

Every week seems to see the release of another film about some famous figure from the past. In recent months we’ve seen ‘Love and Mercy’, ‘Legend’, ‘Pasolini’ and ‘Bridge of Spies’. Awards are sure to follow.

In this talk we will explore this most popular but often maligned film genre. Looking at a range of films released since 1990, we’ll be looking at issues surrounding their narrative structure, production, performance, subject representation or misrepresentation, and critical response.

Ellen Cheshire’s book ‘Bio-Pics: a life in pictures’ was published by Columbia University Press in January 2015. Cheshire has also written books on Ang Lee, Jane Campion, The Coen Brothers and Audrey Hepburn. She has contributed to books on James Bond, Charlie Chaplin, Counterculture, Silent Cinema, War Movies and Fantasy Films.

The Suffragette Movement and the Arts On Saturday 21st November, our Education Department is offering a full study day, highlighting and adding further historic detail to the recent powerful films ‘Suffragette’, ‘Make More Noise’ and ‘He Named Me Malala’.

The Talented Patricia Highsmith

An exploration of her life and work Patricia Highsmith’s taut and psychologically thrilling fiction has always aroused the interest of the best film directors. Think of Hitchcock’s ‘Strangers on a Train’, Rene Clement’s ‘Plein Soleil’ and Anthony Mingella’s ‘The Talented Mr Ripley’. This season we screen the latest adaptation of her novel ‘The Price of Salt’ re-named ‘Carol’ and starring Cate Blanchett. Two disciples of Highsmith, S.J Watson and Gillian Flynn directed the hottest hits of recent years ‘Before I go to Sleep’ and ‘Gone Girl’.

In this talk, illustrated with film clips, Rosemary Coxon, the cinema’s Education Officer, will give a brief overview of Highsmith’s works and how they translated into film as well as insights into her life as a writer.
