Those of you have visited the Cinema recently will have noticed that there have been many changes. Upgrades include a fresh coat of paint; information screens in the foyer and bar to replace the endless flyers; box office counter; removal of the impersonal glass barrier on the Box Office counter; poster boxes; Box Office furniture... and still to come, there will be some comfy foyer seating; plants; and a new foyer floor put in on the 13-15 June. All of this is due to you!!!

We have gathered the money brought in by the last 2 Winter Raffles and March’s Film Quiz, and together with the New Park Centre, we are giving Chichester Cinema at New Park the space it deserves.

PLEASE NOTE: The Box Office and Cinema will be closed on the 13, 14 & 15 June – only internet bookings will be processed.

Summer means Festivals and Fun, and we here at New Park never miss out on our opportunity to raise the ‘Film’ banner at this time of year. The 24th Chichester International Film Festival launches on the 7th and 8th August with two Open Air Screenings at Chichester’s Priory Park. A week before that (Monday 3rd August) we will have a Festival Programme Launch at the New Park Bar. Come and join us from 11:30-12:30 for some nibbles and a drink, have a chat to Roger Gibson (Festival Artistic Director) about some hidden gems and pick up your Festival Programme before anyone else.

Every year we have the most generous of supporters who help us bring the best films to the Film Festival by becoming a Festival Patron.

‘A Pair so Famous’: The Afterlife of Antony and Cleopatra To complement our screening of ‘Antony and Cleopatra’ (see below) we present this informative talk on Shakespeare’s play.

This talk will discuss the reception of Shakespeare’s ‘Antony and Cleopatra’, drawing in particular on twentieth-century film and TV adaptations of the play from the 1970s and 1980s. It will explore the cultural clash between Egyptian sensuality and Roman self-restraint; the central characters’ journey from transgression to tragedy; the difficulty of representing the figure of Cleopatra, and constructions of heroism and myth. Páraic Finnerty is Reader in English and American Literature at the University of Portsmouth. He is the author of Emily Dickinson’s Shakespeare (2006) and the co-author of Victorian Celebrity Culture and Tennyson’s Circle (2013).

Antony and Cleopatra The third of the Roman Tragedies, ‘Antony & Cleopatra’ picks up Antony’s story many years after Julius Caesar.

Virtue and vice, transcendent love and realpolitik combine in Shakespeare’s greatest exploration of the conflicting claims of sex and power, all expressed in a tragic poetry of breath-taking beauty and magnificence. The Globe’s 2014 envisioning of this iconic play encapsulates these themes whilst deftly threading a sense of comedy throughout, and Olivier Award-winner Eve Best’s Cleopatra ‘kisses the audience’ (Guardian) with her magnetically humorous performance.

Arthur Conan Doyle’s time in Portsmouth Birthplace of Sherlock Holmes, the greatest of the fictional detectives When he died in 2004, Richard Lancelyn Green bequeathed to Portsmouth his collection of material relating to Arthur Conan Doyle, including 16,000 books, 3,000 objects, and 40,000 archives. Michael Gunton is Senior Archivist at Portsmouth Library and Archive Service and has been involved with making this collection more accessible.

Laura Weston is the Education and Learning Officer for the Conan Doyle Collection.

Adapting Sherlock Holmes for the Screen Penny Chalk will explore the history of Sherlock Holmes adaptations, and examine how that familiar image of Holmes with deerstalker hat, curved pipe and cape has changed over time. Penny Chalk’s expertise in Sherlock Holmes adaptations spans from his first appearances on stage to the series of films starring Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce.

The Merchant of Venice ‘Treasure Island’ director Polly Findlay makes her RSC Shakespeare debut with the Bard’s great tragedy.

In the melting pot of Venice, trade is God. With its ships plying the globe, the city opens its arms to all, as long as they come prepared to do business and there is profit to be made. Bassanio asks his friend, Venetian merchant Antonio, to lend him three thousand ducats to finance his wooing of the lovely Portia of Belmont. But since Antonio’s wealth is tied up in seafaring business ventures, he borrows the cash from moneylender Shylock. Thanks to simmering racial tensions, there’s no love lost between the two men. Shylock insists on a bond stipulating that if the debt is not repaid by an agreed date, he will take a pound of Antonio’s flesh. Then news arrives that Antonio’s ships have been lost at sea.

‘I would be friends with you’: Bonds of Love and Hate in The Merchant of Venice Talk by Páraic Finnerty This talk will consider the representation of love and hate in Shakespeare’s ‘The Merchant of Venice’, drawing on scenes and imagery from TV and cinematic adaptations of this controversial play, including Michael Radford’s 2004 version. It focuses on the play’s depiction of cross-dressing, same-sex friendship, and romantic love, and its problematic depiction and treatment of Shylock, which complicates a twenty-first-century audience’s response to this Shakespearean comedy. Páraic Finnerty is Reader in English and American Literature at the University of Portsmouth. He is the author of Emily Dickinson’s Shakespeare (2006) and the co-author of Victorian Celebrity Culture and Tennyson’s Circle (2013).

Stet (Garrett Wareing) is a troubled 11-year-old Texan with the voice of an angel. His teacher (Debra Winger) arranges for an audition with a prestigious American Boychoir School, but Stet does not show.

When his alcoholic mother dies in a car crash, his wealthy, longabsent dad (Josh Lucas) bribes Stet’s way into the ‘Tony School’ to hide his son from his new family, which does not sit well with Mr. Carvelle (Dustin Hoffman in a master class in underplaying for the screen) or his ambitious, long-suffering assistant (Eddie Izzard).

A Fuller Life Filmmaker Samantha Fuller pays tribute to her late father, American film and literary icon Sam Fuller.

“For movie-goers to get the idea of real combat, you’d have to shoot at them every so often from either side of the screen.” So says D-day veteran turned legendary film-maker Sam Fuller (‘Shock Corridor’, ‘The Big Red One’), adding wryly that “casualties in the theatre would be bad for business”. The film features excerpts from Fuller’s memoirs read by fans, friends, and followers, including Joe Dante, James Franco, William Friedkin, Wim Wenders, James Toback, Monte Hellman, and Fuller’s former muse Constance Towers.

Both are smitten by the lovely Victoria Shaw, who is implicated in the crime. Corbett becomes jealous of Shigeta, who is deeply hurt, feeling that Corbett’s animosity is borne of racism. Their friendship, and the central romance, is resolved after the detectives bring the murderer to heel in Los Angeles’ Little Tokyo. Samuel Fuller’s love of oriental exotica is never more pronounced than in the climactic sequences, staged before the backdrop of the Japanese New Year celebration.

With its slow pace, ‘Still the Water’ has the kind of grace that finally lives up to its director’s ambitions (Kawase believes this to be her “masterpiece” and fully deserving of the top prize at Cannes – which it didn’t get). We feel like we’re right there in the studio with him as he creates Pet Sounds. The moment we see Dano in the film’s daringly off-kilter opening shot, which is just Brian noodling around at the piano and talking to himself, the actor seems to transform into Wilson’s very being - this isn’t just acting, it’s channelling of a very high order. In the 1980s (now played by John Cusack), he is a broken, confused man under the 24-hour watch of shady therapist Dr. Eugene Landy (Paul Giamatty). This is a beautiful bio-pic about the creative process, that intangible thing artists try to express and aficionados try to understand.

That makes finding another job difficult for the talented reporter until his greatest scoop falls right in his lap thanks to Christian Longo (James Franco), an accused killer of his own children who was living under Finkel’s name in California before his capture, claiming he was a fan of the writer’s work. Directed by Rupert Goold - a British theatre veteran making his feature debut - it’s deliberately paced, with more talk than action, which is appropriate for the material.

British New Wave Films - 1960's A three day film course (over 3 weeks) on the British New Wave Films of the 1960's.

Many of the films of this genre have two main themes in common: class and its restrictions, and unwanted (or at least inconvenient) pregnancies. These films were considered gritty and many were set anywhere in Britain but London - Locations included Bradford, Leeds, Manchester, Liverpool, Halifax and Bolton. Think of 'Billy Liar', 'A Kind of Loving', 'This Sporting Life', 'Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner' and we have the genre explained.

The course will be run by John Fitzpatrick (26 Jun) and Rosemary Coxon (3 & 10 Jul), both of which have had extensive careers in Education, and have a close association with Chichester Cinema at New Park.
