You may have noticed that we did not screen any films in the three days prior to the start of this Summer Season. I’m sure you were all thinking we were just soaking up the sun in Priory Park… but you would be wrong.
We’ve been busy upgrading our cinema projector to the latest laser technology, as well as making alterations to the masking (curtains) around the screen. The new projector will create a brighter and more vibrant image on the screen, as well as having the additional advantage of being installed in a location that will end those frustrating human shadows during the credits. The masking will be adjusted so that the viewing area on the screen will be slightly larger, and the masking itself will be improved across the top of the screen.
As for the reason you really come to Chichester Cinema, expect three huge blockbusters this season: Steven Spielberg’s ‘Disclosure Day’, Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’ and Pixar’s ‘Toy Story 5’. These will complement a season filled to the brim with quality UK and World cinema. Look out for ‘Leonora in the Morning Light‘ (Mexico), Köln 75 (Germany), ‘Eagles of the Republic‘ (Egypt), ‘The Last Viking‘ (Denmark), ‘A Private Room‘ (France), ‘The Last One for the Road’ (Italy) and ‘The Furious‘ (China) to take you on a whistlestop tour of the world.
Other films to note are ‘Virginia Woolf’s Night and Day‘ based on a lesser-known Woolf novel, the comedy music drama ‘Power Ballad‘ and Olivia Wilde’s new grown-up dramedy ‘The Invite‘, alongside the BFI’s Rip it Up season which includes ‘Quadrophenia’ and ‘This is England’.

In this pop music comedy drama, Rick, a washed-up wedding singer and Danny, a fading boy band star, bond over music and a late-night jam session.
Rick Power (Paul Rudd) is a wedding singer who has been living in Ireland for 15 years. He fronts “Ireland’s grooviest wedding band”, Bride & Groove, pumping out spirited versions of jukebox chestnuts. He once had a dream, and very nearly ‘made’ it when he was in a popular rock band. Danny Wilson (Nick Jonas) has a dream too. The former boy band star was once a teen idol. He’s still trying, writing songs in his home studio, but the industry isn’t buying. When the two meet at an Irish castle wedding, they hit it off and end up inspiring each other, jamming on a song Rick had written years earlier. Months later, when Danny turns Rick’s song into a hit (without his knowledge), Rick sets out to reclaim the recognition he believes he deserves. This film has the pretty chords you expect from a John Carney film – do you remember his beautiful 2006 film ‘Once’? - but it also has the discord of true drama.

THE GOOD BOY
In this psychological thriller, a young hooligan is kidnapped and forced into a rehabilitation process by a dysfunctional couple, who try to make him a “good boy”.
19-year-old Tommy (Anson Boon) revels in a life of drugs, parties and violence. One night, on a bender with his reckless friends, he becomes separated from the group and is abducted by an unknown figure. Though he is no stranger to inflicting violence, he is enraged and horrified when he wakes to find himself chained in the basement of the isolated suburban family home of Chris (Stephen Graham), his wife Kathryn (Andrea Riseborough) and their young son Jonathan (Kit Rakusen). The family sets out to reform Tommy’s unruly behaviour, forcing him to comply with their relentless mind games or seek escape at any cost. Graham and Riseborough are impressive as the creepy couple, but the film is anchored by Anson Boon’s gripping, transformative performance. Director Komasa respects our intelligence throughout, which helps the film earn its sneakily moving ending.

ADA: MY MOTHER THE ARCHITECT
Renowned architect Ada Karmi-Melamede balanced family life and major projects in 1970s NYC before leaving to design Israel’s Supreme Court. Her daughter’s film explores their relationship and career-motherhood tensions.
Ada is one of the most accomplished female architects in the world, but very little is known about her outside her home country of Israel. This is a deeply moving portrait of an extraordinary woman directed by her daughter, filmmaker and former architect, Yael Melamede. Despite personal sacrifices, Ada’s work gave physical form to some of Israel’s highest democratic ideals, most notably in the acclaimed Supreme Court building in Jerusalem, the Open University and Ben Gurion Airport. The film also peeks into a family split which corresponds to a split within Israel itself: Karmi-Melamede is clearly downcast by the Netanyahu government’s move three years ago to lessen the power of the Supreme Court. When Yael asks Ada about architecture, her mother is spellbindingly eloquent, even poetic. You may never walk through a building the same way again after you hear Ada describe what she hopes to achieve as people see, walk through, live and work in what she creates. (Some Subtitles)

This is a psychological thriller with great performances by the leading trio (especially Ifans). It is intelligent and gripping and balances two related themes with insight: the guilt in the aftermath of tragedy and the challenges of a relationship that moves from unwanted to ominous.

To complement our talk on Protests in Film, we present this previous Chichester Film Festival Audience Award winner, where gay activists work to help miners during their lengthy strike in the summer of 1984.
Margaret Thatcher is in power and the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) is on strike. At the Gay Pride March in London, a group of gay and lesbian activists decides to raise money to support the families of the striking miners. But there is a problem. The Union seems embarrassed to receive their support. Based on a true story, this film moves effortlessly from some intense dramatic moments to hilarious scenes showcasing the contrasting lifestyles of the gay and straight worlds. This is truly a joyful experience.

SENTIMENTALITY, SCEPTICISM AND STRUGGLE
BRITISH STRIKES & POLITICAL PROTEST ON FILM
In May 1926, a time of political, social and economic unrest, Britain experienced its only General Strike. With one or two noticeable exceptions, the General Strike is rarely represented in film.
To mark the centenary, this talk, illustrated by a range of clips, by Emeritus Professor of Cultural History Maggie Andrews, will explore a range of portrayals of strikes and political protest in British films. Whilst ‘I’m All Right Jack’ (1959) and ‘Carry on at Your Convenience’ (1971) have taken a satirical approach to industrial disputes, other films such as ‘Comrades’ (1987) and ‘Peterloo’ (2018) have been criticised as worthy but tedious. Alternatively, a range of films, including ‘Made in Dagenham’ (2010), ‘Pride’ (2014) and ‘Suffragette’ (2015) are uplifting but romanticised and sentimental. We will explore how the most successful films have managed to entertain audiences without sacrificing historical authenticity.

Vera Brandes, who, in 1975 and at the age of 18, staged the famous Köln Concert by jazz musician Keith Jarrett.
Keith Jarrett’s legendary performance in January 1975 nearly didn’t happen. Based on a true story, ‘Köln 75’ follows how the concert was conceived and orchestrated by the efforts of a teenage up and coming concert promoter, Vera Brandes (Mala Emde). Her enthusiasm set her to multitasking - from organising the concert venue (the Cologne Opera House), promoting the event and selling the tickets, to convincing Jarrett (John Magaro) to perform when he almost dropped out when the Bösendorfer Imperial Grand piano he was promised was nowhere to be found. The film captures the compelling, entertaining and, until now, unknown back story about Jarrett’s one-hour, entirely improvised concert, which became the bestselling solo album in jazz history. In this sweetly witty, tragedy-tinged road movie, two brothers run away from home in England to reach their estranged grandfather on Ireland’s west coast.
Billy Nighy plays John, the most rakish granddad in Munster. Flashbacks show us summer-postcard scenes of happier times with English grandsons Finn (Roman Griffin Davis of ‘Jojo Rabbit’) and Charlie (Dexter Sol Ansell of ‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’). With the family household now verging on the fractious, the boys decide the only one place on Earth that will provide them with a buffer from all the unhappiness is the seaside wonderland of Dingle. It was there that the family would routinely decamp for blissful summer holidays with granddad and granny. Things have changed though, as John is now struggling through life, living in a caravan. Look out for Maisie Williams (‘Game of Thrones’) who plays Kait, a guitar-toting, fingerless glove-wearing busker who helps the boys jump various hurdles. This film will make you laugh, but it will also make you cry.

The two leads are clever casting choices as neither is associated with the genre, making this production feel fresh. Together, the brothers embark on an unexpected journey to locate the money and discover who they really are. A series of hilarious misadventures and slapstick comedy sequences ensue, but they’re steeped in conflicted fraternal emotions, questions of identity and the iffy concept of normalcy. In a landscape of fear and scarcity, where basic ingredients are nearly impossible to find, Lamia sets out on a determined journey throughout the big city in search of eggs, flour and sugar. Accompanied by her grandmother (Waheed Thabet Khreibat), her loyal friend Saeed (Sajad Mohamad Qasem) and her pet rooster Hindi, she navigates vendors and police officers along her odyssey. While the film plays mostly like a genial fairy tale, with superbly balanced humour and drama, director Hadi is still unsparing about the ills of this patriarchal society. The film is set among beautiful Mesopotamian marshes of the director’s childhood, where schoolchildren glide through marshlands in canoes to get to their classes. After speaking to the deceased’s husband (Mathieu Amalric) and daughter (Luàna Bajrami), events take a turn for the suspicious. Foster is joined by an A-list cast including Daniel Auteuil and Virginie Efira, whilst the director plays with the duality of tones: between deliberate comedy and deep dives into a personality full of grey areas. This is immensely entertaining, blending murder mystery, romantic comedy and character study tropes into an appealingly light-hearted ride. 20 years after its ground-breaking release, we revisit Shane Meadows’ moving coming-of-age tale that captures the despair among England’s working-class youth in the 1980s. Our second film in the nationwide Rip It Up season. 12-year-old Shaun (Thomas Turgoose) earns the respect of a group of skinheads when he stands up to their teasing. He becomes part of the gang and enjoys hanging out with his new friends led by the sweet natured Woody (Joseph Gilgun in a standout performance). Trouble starts with the return of Combo (Stephen Graham), a racist ex-convict, whose racist agenda splits the gang, and Sean, tragically, finds himself turning to Combo as a substitute for the father he lost in the Falklands. Meadows has created a film fizzing with energy and humour, powered by brilliantly engaging performances, including early roles for Vicky McClure and Jack O’Connell. THE ODYSSEY

In the second of two events this season linked to productions at Chichester Festival Theatre, this talk explores the fascinating story behind ‘My Fair Lady’.
When, 70 years ago, Lerner and Loewe adapted George Bernard Shaw’s ‘Pygmalion’ to create the musical ‘My Fair Lady’, several of Shaw’s plays had already been successfully filmed, so it was almost inevitable that a film version would be made, particularly after their huge success with ‘Gigi’. Andrew Vance, of the Cinema Education Team, will be applying his considerable knowledge of both theatre and cinema to reveal the story behind its journey from stage to screen. In this beloved musical, pompous phonetics professor Henry Higgins (Rex Harrison) is so sure of his abilities that he takes it upon himself to transform a Cockney working-class girl into someone who can pass for a cultured member of high society. His subject turns out to be the lovely Eliza Doolittle (Audrey Hepburn), who agrees to speech lessons to improve her job prospects. Higgins and Eliza clash, then form an unlikely bond - one that is threatened by an aristocratic suitor (Jeremy Brett). This is wonderfully stylish (Hepburn is gorgeous), wittily scripted (using much of George Bernard Shaw’s ‘Pygmalion’ source material) and immaculately cast. It remains a timeless, captivating classic, deserving of a chance to be seen on a big screen.

But then a low-rent TV show starts filming in the locality, leaving Kenneth ready to blow, and what makes it worse is that Sir Douglas’s ghost is lurking about the place, full of contempt for his descendant.

The conscientious parents (Iringó Réti and Ádám Tompa) try their best to cope and to help him, between psychiatry and a combination of tough and abiding love. This is a masterfully-assembled memory piece that goes a long way towards articulating life-altering grief, ‘Blue Heron’ is deeply affecting and announces writer-director Sophy Romvari as an artist to watch. One of the ultimate cult classics of British cinema. Based on The Who’s 1973 double album, ‘Quadrophenia’ manages to be both quintessentially British and irrefutably universal. An angst-ridden London youth, Jimmy Cooper (Phil Daniels) escapes the drudgery of his postal job and his working-class parents as a member of the Mods, a sharply dressed gang (who favoured bands like The Kinks and The Who) constantly at odds with their rivals, the Rockers (leather-clad youths who preferred the older 1950s brand of music). When the Mods and Rockers clash in Brighton, it leads to both trouble and an encounter with the lovely Steph (Leslie Ash). Returning to London, Jimmy, who aspires to be like Mod leader Ace Face (Sting), becomes even more disillusioned and longs to return to Brighton. Daniels is excellent in the central role, a Mod who, like most everyone else in his circle, is primarily interested in the old battle cry of sex, drugs, and rock ‘n’ roll, and look out also for Ray Winstone and Timothy Spall in early roles.

Two blustery 50-somethings have an obsession: going for their last drink. One night, they run into a shy architecture student whose way of seeing the world and love will be transformed as the trio wander from bar to bar of Veneto.
Two middle-aged friends, Carlobianchi (Sergio Romano) and Doriano (Pierpaolo Capovilla), swear every boozy beverage will be the last one - until the next one that usually comes right after. To them, the party is never quite over. Thankfully, they never come across as intoxicated creeps; instead, they are tipsy and bickering friends: almost like their bromance is a marriage, Italian style. They often have a hard time remembering the lessons they have learned and revelations they landed on, they do exactly that by taking under their wing the young Giulio (Filippo Scotti), an architecture student who’s adrift and intrigued. Loosely reminiscent of the brilliant 2020 Danish dark comedy ‘Another Round’, or the happy-sad fables of Alice Rohrwacher, Francesco Sossai’s boozy dramedy is an enchanting comedy. (Subtitles)

Underneath the Catalonian sun, a rich white American family lives in hedonistic isolation, seeking love and validation through one another, their designer wardrobes and pop music. When an outsider infiltrates the family, buried tensions surface and blood ties are severed.
Edward’s (Callum Turner) family is not a normal family. They were moved from New York to Spain by their mother (Pamela Anderson) six months prior. Their mother is dead, we learn, having been torn apart by wolves(!), leaving her blind husband (Tracy Letts) alone with their son Edward, his brothers Jack (Jamie Bell) and Robert (Lukas Gage) and their sister Anna (Riley Keough). All of them love Jack, in their own idiosyncratic ways, so when Jack brings home a new girlfriend, Martha (Elle Fanning), it does not go down well. This is a fabulous feast for the eyes and ears – and those who like their cinema deliriously weird. Fans of Yorgos Lanthimos will very much enjoy this.

When the local nursing home finds itself in dire straits and in danger of falling to pieces, it’s down to Mother Veronique (Valérie Bonneton) and the five eccentric sisters of the convent of St. Benedict to find a way to help. Spotting a poster for a bike race with a €25,000 cash prize (and the incentive of a trip to the Vatican for the winner!), the sisters might just have their answer. The only drawbacks are that they are terrible cyclists, and their rival convent, led by Mother Veronique’s childhood nemesis Mother Josephine (‘Borgen’’s Sidse Babett Knudsen), have their own plans for the prize money – and just a little more experience. But God works in mysterious ways! Laurent Tirard’s hilariously absurd comedy had our audiences rolling in the aisles (and that’s why we have brought it back) and the stunning landscapes of France’s Jura region provide a beautiful backdrop too!
