Chichester Cinema at New Park Summer has arrived, and we are proud to present to you another diverse range of films, brimming with quality. The multiple lockdowns have been a drain on everyone and everything, but they also ensured a healthy selection of Summer films which we are now lucky enough to be able to select for you.

This current programme spans either side of the Government announcement on social distancing. Our intention is to go back to a normal auditorium layout once this happens. We do however hope to trial some selected socially distanced screenings for those not ready to return to a full auditorium. Keep an eye out on our website, and join the weekly email newsletter list to be kept fully up to date.

On pages 12 and 13 you will find details of this year’s 29th Chichester International Film Festival.

We announce the Open Air Screenings, including ‘In the Heights’ which is sure to be a future cult hit, much in the same vein as ‘The Greatest Showman’ and ‘West Side Story’. We are proud to be the only Open Air Screening provider that screens from real cinema projection equipment on to a real cinema screen, therefore allowing us to screen new films.

Four friends decide to test a theory that maintaining a constant blood alcohol level will improve their lives.

Take one part deftly directed tragicomedy, add a dash of Mads Mikkelsen in vintage form, and you’ve got this intoxicating look at midlife crises. Mikkelsen is reunited with ‘The Hunt’ director Thomas Vinterberg in this riotously entertaining tragi-comedy. Mads and three other disaffected teachers decide to follow a theory that promotes methodically prescribed all-day drinking to battle depression. To get their mojo back they furtively imbibe clear spirits decanted into mineral water bottles. ‘Another Round’ spirals into an ironic portrait of debauchery loaded with vicious twists, leading to hectic decisions both wrenching and hilarious.

It’s a joy to see Vinterberg and Mikkelsen find their groove again. Not to be missed!

A Quiet Place Part II

After their home was destroyed as depicted in the first film, Evelyn Abbott (Emily Blunt) leads what is left of her family in search of fellow survivors. Silence is golden for the Abbott family as the aliens can hear even the slightest noise. However, the creatures are not the only threat as the Abbotts come into contact with vicious, feral humans. The cinema experience of ‘A Quiet Place’ was extraordinary, with the sequel delivering a stunning opening scene and more of the exquisite tension generated in a near silent world. Lockdown questioned whether cinema could drag us away from streaming – whisper it, but this film is the emphatic, affirmative answer.

A longstanding feud between Verona’s Montague and Capulet families brings about devastating consequences for two young lovers caught in the conflict.

Reuniting the stars of his film of Cinderella, Kenneth Branagh directs Richard Madden and Lily James as Romeo and Juliet and Sir Derek Jacobi as Mercutio. Originally staged in the summer of 2016, the production opened to rave reviews and was broadcast live via satellite that summer. This will be audiences’ very first chance to see the play again, having never been re-released or made available elsewhere.

A Welsh village gets together to breed and train a racehorse, and pit themselves against the racing elite in a race for the national championship.

This is the inspiring true story of Dream Alliance, an unlikely racehorse bred by small town Welsh bartender, Jan Vokes (Toni Collette) to add meaning to what she feels is a pretty humdrum life. With very little money and no experience, Jan convinces her neighbours (inc. Damien Lewis), to chip in their meagre earnings to help raise Dream in the hopes he can compete with the racing elites. Horse lovers will be charmed by the title character’s soulful eyes.

Agonizingly beautiful adaptation of Jack London’s novel in which the eponymous Martin struggles to rise above his destitute, proletarian circumstances to claim a place among the literary elite.

The setting is transposed to Italy where Martin (Luca Marinelli), an ill-educated labourer, saves a young man from being beaten up, and is invited to the boy’s family’s estate, where Martin meets his lovely sister, Elena (Jessica Cressy). Overwhelmed by the art and books in the house, as well as his love for Elena, he embarks on a journey of self-education to escape his roots. ‘The film is a romance, of sorts, yet it also wields an anti-romantic ferocity, suggesting that the fissure between rich and poor is, whatever we yearn to think, unbridgeable.’ The New Yorker. “I want to see the Eiffel Tower, then die,” replies Frances (Michelle Pfeiffer) when a customs officer asks what she plans to do in Paris. It’s a joke, but it also might be the truth in Azazel Jacobs’ movie of the Patrick deWitt novel. DeWitt also wrote the screenplay, which retains his deadpan, Wes Anderson-ish wit. The singular character of New Yorker Frances Price is at the centre of both the book and the movie, in an extraordinary performance by Pfeiffer. This smartly written ‘dramedy’ offers proof that even the most caustic characters can be made entertaining - and even relatable through a sparkling Michelle Pfeiffer performance. A deadly virus has ravaged the world and scientist Martin Lowery (Joel Fry) is sent to a government-controlled outpost in a verdant English forest. He is assigned to trek through the woods to meet Dr Wendle (Hilary Squires) who hasn’t been heard from for a while. His journey brings him into contact with the unhinged Zach (Reece Shearsmith) and soon descends into a fight for survival. Filmed over 15 days in August last year and clearly informed by the current pandemic, ‘In The Earth’ is an immersive portrait of tribalism and madness, angst and survivalism that builds to a tense and unsettlingly eerie conclusion.

George Gershwin’s masterpiece, one of America’s favourite operas, takes to the New Park big screen in July. James Robinson’s stylish production transports audiences to Catfish Row on the Charleston waterfront, vibrant with the music, dancing, emotion, and heartbreak of its inhabitants.

“If you’re going to stage Gershwin’s opera, this is how,” raved the Guardian when the new production premiered in London in 2018. David Robertson conducts a dynamic cast, featuring the sympathetic duo of Eric Owens and Angel Blue in the title roles and an all-star ensemble that includes Golda Schultz, Latonia Moore, Denyce Graves, Frederick Ballentine, and Alfred Walker.

A supremely American operatic masterpiece and the most ambitious work by one of the nation’s greatest musical talents, ‘Porgy and Bess’ focuses on the joys and struggles of a black neighborhood in Charleston, South Carolina, in the early 20th century. Elia escapes Palestine for a new beginning only to encounter the same problems in Paris and New York. Delightful droll comedy that suggests that we all live in a kind of global Palestine.

Director Elia Suleiman plays Elia, a man looking to finance his film (which could very well be the film you’re watching). He leaves his troubled homeland to find strangeness and absurdity mirrored in other cities. In each new location, Suleiman looks with wonder at the cities’ charming qualities, yet time and again, he finds echoes of familiar elements, as on a New York street corner, where everyone he sees at the supermarket or on the street casually carries a gun over his or her shoulder. It’s a funny, highly embellished moment, revealing how tenuous geographic borderlines can be. Funny, seductive and a gem. (Some subtitles).

The Money Order The first feature ever made in an African language, this fulfilled director Ousmane Sembène’s dream “to restore Africa’s stories to Africans.” This stunning new 4K restoration brings it to the rest of the world.

Set in Dakar, ‘Mandabi’ tells the story of Ibrahim (Makhouredia Gueye) and the transformative effect that a 25,000 franc money order from his nephew in Paris has on his fortunes. Word quickly travels about his new found wealth, while a thousand bureaucratic obstacles stand in the path between him and his money. Ibrahim, preening and scheming, laying bets he has no means to collect, is a superb character study. But ‘Mandabi’ is also a sprightly but stiletto-sharp satire on post-independence African nations and the shadow cast by colonialism.

Winner of the Grand Jury prize at the Venice Film Festival, Sembène’s adaptation of his own novella set a new course for African cinema: radical, anti-colonial and proudly independent in its methods. (Subtitles).

A man in the middle of a midlife crisis falls in love with his fringe jacket in this brilliantly twisted, darkly comic road-trip.

Jean Dujardin plays the man determined to own the only jacket in the world.

Director Quentin Dupieux made a film called ‘Rubber’ about a killer tyre. So, it is no surprise to find him telling a tale of a man’s smouldering infatuation with a suede jacket. When the jacket tells him it wants to be the only jacket in the world – Georges is up to the task and sets about it with bloodthirsty enthusiasm dispatching those who won’t hand over their jackets with a blade from a ceiling fan. There are echoes of Ben Wheatley’s black comedy ‘Sightseers’ as well as the deadpan absurdity of Luis Buñuel. David Lynch might have directed ‘Deerskin’ as if it were a dream; others might have treated it as a farce. Dupieux keeps a straight face, and you will see nothing like it this, or perhaps any year. Warm and witty and driven by the classy Sigourney Weaver.

Margaret Qualley burst onto the scene as one of Charles Manson’s followers in ‘Once Upon a Time in Hollywood’. Here she plays Joanna, assistant to Weaver’s literary agent, whose job it is to process J. D. Salinger’s voluminous fan mail. She soon tires of replying with the stock letter and impulsively begins personalising the responses. In using the great writer’s voice, Joanna begins to discover her own.

‘My New York Year’ sidesteps the slush pile and offers a thoughtful study of a young woman realising she must shed her responsibilities to other writers in order to put her own words on the page.

One of the greatest romantic ballets, ‘Giselle’ has been re-imagined by celebrated choreographer Akram Khan with Artistic Director and Lead Principal of English National Ballet, Tamara Rojo, dancing the role of Giselle, one of a community of migrant workers cast out of their jobs in a condemned garment factory.

With staging and costumes by Academy Award-winning Tim Yip (‘Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon’), the ballet has won an Olivier Award and the South Bank Sky Arts Award for English National Ballet, received rapturous 5-star reviews and was sold out when performed at London’s Sadler’s Wells. Filmed live at the Liverpool Empire in October 2017, it is directed for the screen by Ross MacGibbon.

The familiar 19th Century Spanish cigarette factory becomes a greasy garage-diner in 1960’s America where the dreams and passions of a small-town are shattered by the arrival of a handsome stranger.

Fuelled by heat and desire, the inhabitants are driven into an unstoppable spiral of greed, lust, betrayal and revenge. Matthew Bourne’s vivid storytelling takes in a wealth of cinematic references, and the single stage set adapts into eight different permutations, taking us from diner through nightclub and prison and then out on the road in a cinematic finale where the Chevrolet cars of the period are destroyed in a pile up. When she catches sight of a handsome man, Raphaël (Arnaud Valois), nearly two decades her senior, she finds her adoration of him fills the gap in her distracted mind. The two leads have electric chemistry together and the film rejects any Lolita or ‘Manhattan’ comparisons. Suzanne is no victim and as a writer-director she feels completely in control. A portrait of romance and fantasy, boredom and adolescence, Suzanne Lindon’s understated and elegant debut navigates the unique thrills of first love.

This affectionate and engaging film follows a wild decade in the life of Finnish artist Tove Jansson and the creation of the Moomin books.

The Moomins are beloved cartoon characters familiar to readers around the globe, but less is known about their creator, Finnish visual artist and author Tove Jansson. Alma Pöysti gives a mesmerising performance as Tove in this sensuously textured film that concentrates on a formative decade in her life from the mid 1940s. The film explores evolving definitions of art through her tense relationship with her father but the deeper focus is on Tove as a person and the fascinating milieu in which she lives. The Truffle Hunters

This film is also a heart-wrenchingly sweet study of the pure love that exists between old men and their dogs. In the forests of Piedmont in northern Italy there is to be found a certain exquisite form of white truffle prized by connoisseurs and gourmands and restaurateurs the world over – and they are prepared to pay big money. The film shows auctions for these dusty, bulbous fungi with buyers showing the kind of overexcitement more associated with sales of wine or contemporary art. The stars are the dogs but not far behind is a boisterous gallery of ageing oddballs whose eccentricity, because it is rooted in a passion for the natural world, has an innate dignity. THE BEST FILM FESTIVAL ON THE SOUTH COAST RETURNS We invite you to experience the highlight of the film calendar at Chichester Cinema at New Park when we present the 29th Chichester International Film Festival.

Artistic Director Roger Gibson is planning some superb treats, including two very special films to open and close the Festival. Be quick to get your tickets when they are released in late July, and look out for the Festival Launch on July 30 - announced on the weekly email newsletter.

We have added a new venue this year - the historic Guildhall in Priory Park - where we present two special events that include live music.

All this in addition to our usual selection of UK and world premieres, selected retrospectives, independent films by upcoming filmmakers, treasures from the archive, quality documentaries, illustrated film talks, and Q&A sessions with visiting filmmakers.

Four friends recreate an inter-rail journey across Europe they did in their youth to fulfil their friend’s dying wish. And this time 18-year-old Maddie takes her mother’s place.

Three 50-something women (Kelly Preston, Jenny Seagrove and Sally Phillips) set out to repeat the European inter-railing adventures of their youth, after their close friend passes away leaving them rail tickets, and a final request: to take her teenage daughter (Elizabeth Dormer-Phillips) with them. With lost passports, train strikes and romantic entanglements thrown in their way, they must put old feuds aside to complete the journey within five days and remind themselves that they are still at their peak. After a terrible personal tragedy griefstricken Edee (Robin Wright) retreats to the magnificent but unforgiving wilds of the Rockies. She sets herself up in a remote cabin but she is unprepared for the challenges ahead. She can’t chop wood or shoot a gun. The harsh winter and local wildlife take their toll until Miguel (Demián Bichir) shows up to nurse her back to health and teach her valuable survival skills.

The cinematography is extraordinary – could it be anything but, given the location?

Wright’s internalised performance is phenomenal and she commands this compassionate, poignant and afecting film. Given the restrictions we have all undergone, ‘Land’ offers simple lessons and stunning landscapes that may eel like a welcome balm.

Exploring the Britons’ connections to bubbly, from Churchill’s love of Pol Roger to the Bond franchise and the Queen’s vineyard, this light-hearted documentary returns some much needed celebration to our lives and provides a modern twist on Anglo-French relations. Features Stephen Fry, Brad Pitt, Vitalie Taittinger and great grandson of Winston Churchill, Nicholas Soames.

35-year-old window cleaner John (James Norton) has dedicated his life to bringing up his 4-year-old son, Michael, after the child’s mother left soon after giving birth. John’s cancer diagnosis propels him into a search for the perfect family to bring up his son.

And so begins a series of encounters with potential adopters. Set in contemporary Belfast, the film really succeeds via the chemistry between Norton and Daniel Lamont who plays the son. Never melodramatic or heavy-handed but an intimate and touching character study. That said, you ought to bring the tissues.

Face coverings to be used at all times in the Centre, including the Auditorium.

Please keep 2 metres apart and follow the one-way signage around the Centre.

Hand sanitizer will be available throughout the New Park Centre.

The Auditorium has been laid out to observe the national ‘1-metre plus mitigation’ rule.

We have reduced the screening numbers to allow more time in between films.

Extra Covid-19 specific cleaning will take place in between every screening.

Screens have been installed to protect our patrons, volunteers and staff.

Staff and volunteers have been given extra Covid-19 specific training.

Please take note of these extra guidelines: - Entrance into the building will be only via the Box Office foyer door.

- The Box Office will only be open for face-to-face transactions from 15:00 to 16:00 seven days a week. Please note that the Box Office will not be open at the start of each film. Tickets must be purchased in advance.

- Doors to the New Park Centre will open 15 minutes before each screening.

- Patrons will be guided directly into the auditorium.

- Refreshments will be available, but there will be no chairs or tables in the foyer or bar.

- All screenings will have approximately 10 minutes of trailers (there will be no ads).

- Once films start, there will be no latecomers allowed into the building.

- We ask all patrons to practice social distancing when leaving the auditorium.

- Exit will be only through the southern (Picture Palace) side of the building.
