Chichester Cinema at New Park (staff, trustees and volunteers) would like to thank every single one of our patrons that have made not only this year the wonderful success it has been, but all of our 40 unforgettable years. To celebrate, we serve up three more delicious Ruby Tuesday films – all at £2.

We present three special strands throughout this Winter, headlined by the annual French Film Festival on Tour (see bottom of this page), and accompanied by two fabulously diverse films of the UK Jewish Film Festival, plus no less than eight fantastic musicals which make up the BFI Musicals Seasons, mostly on beautiful remastered prints. Of course, we also have a host of quality new films on show. From the London Film Festival’s best film ‘Monos’, to Scorsese’s superstar laden ‘The Irishman’, via Aardman’s new Shaun the Sheep film ‘Farmageddon’, and ending with Sam Mendes’ unique WW1 film ‘1917’, there is literally something for everyone.

Steven Soderbergh (‘Erin Brockovich’) assembles a super A-list cast in this story of a widow investigating an insurance fraud, leading her to a pair of Panama law partners exploiting the world’s financial system.

When her idyllic vacation takes an unthinkable turn, Ellen Martin (Meryl Streep) begins investigating a fake insurance policy, only to find herself down a rabbit hole of questionable dealings that can be linked to a Panama City law firm and its vested interest in helping the world’s wealthiest citizens amass even larger fortunes.

Founding partners Jürgen Mossack (Gary Oldman) and Ramón Fonseca (Antonio Banderas) are experts in the seductive ways shell companies and offshore accounts help the rich and powerful prosper. We soon find out that Ellen’s predicament is only the tip of a financially seedy iceberg.

Winner of the Golden Lion for Best Film at the 2019 Venice Film Festival, this is not your typical ‘super-hero/villain’ film – this is one to watch! Joaquin Phoenix is extraordinary in the lead role.

‘Joker’ centres around the iconic arch nemesis of Batman, Arthur Fleck, a man struggling to find his way in Gotham’s fractured society. A clown-for-hire by day, he aspires to be a stand-up comic at night... but finds the joke always seems to be on him.

Caught in a cyclical existence between apathy and cruelty, Arthur makes one bad decision that brings about a chain reaction of escalating events. Suddenly, the shunned outcast transforms into a symbol for Gotham’s most marginalized inhabitants, gaining new swagger. The film also stars Robert de Niro, but it is Phoenix who simultaneously challenges the viewer, and yet, makes it impossible for us to take our eyes off him.

A visionary, innovator and originator who defied categorization and embodied the word cool: a foray into the life and career of musical and cultural icon Miles Davis.

Using words from Davis’ autobiography, this film offers an incisive insight into our understanding of the legendary musician. Newly released archival material, alongside interviews with pre-eminent historians and personal friends like Quincy Jones, illustrate a man of intensity and devotion to his craft. Despite the indignities of America during the time of segregation, nothing was going to stop Davis from realising his dream: to create a new form of musical expression. Davis’ influences are felt to this day, and this special documentary will make you want to feel the way Miles sounds.

The remarkable story of Motown Records, told through interviews with the label’s visionary founder, Berry Gordy, and many of its superstar creative figures.

Also features rare performances and behind-the-scenes footage unearthed from Motown’s vaults and Gordy’s personal archives.

This documentary focuses on the period beginning with the birth of Motown in Detroit in 1958 until its relocation to Los Angeles in the early 1970s.

2015: Ralph Fiennes Visit During 2014 I attended a St. Petersburg Film Market and saw over a dozen new Russian films, some of which I managed to premiere in our 2015 Film Festival. It included the UK premiere of ‘Two Women’ featuring Ralph Fiennes, who learnt Russian for the role. We were delighted to welcome Fiennes to introduce the film, together with the producer and director, the late Vera Glagoleva. – Roger Gibson.

Natalya (Anna Vartanyan) laments losing her allure over the opposite sex as middle age approaches and finds herself increasingly jealous of her adopted daughter Vera (Anna Levanova).

When she employs 21-year-old student Aleksei (Nikita Volkov) to tutor her son, Natalya instantly falls in love with him but so too does Vera. While Natalya still welcomes the attention of family friend Mikhail (Fiennes), a bitter rivalry ensues between the two women.

It was quite a logistical challenge indeed, with over 130 cars to accommodate with good site lines, and we selected ‘Casablanca’ to be shown on one of the biggest outdoor screens in the country.

A truly perfect movie, ‘Casablanca’ still wows viewers today, and for good reason. Its unique story of a love triangle set against terribly high stakes is sophisticated instead of outlandish, intriguing instead of garish. Humphrey Bogart plays the allegedly apolitical club owner in unoccupied French territory that is nevertheless crawling with Nazis; Ingrid Bergman is the lover who mysteriously deserted him in Paris; and Paul Heinreid is her heroic, slightly bewildered husband. This is certainly among the most spirited and ennobling movies ever made.

It’s hard work, and his wife’s (Debbie Honeywood) job as a carer is no easier. The family unit is strong but when both are pulled in different directions everything comes to breaking point. Even at 82, Loach is producing some of the richest and most vital work of his career. ‘I, Daniel Blake’ has an emotional richness, but this is an altogether more focused, more riveting work, that skillfully links the personal and the political.

Our final selection in this Hollywood Musical BFI tour is this incredibly stylish study of the hedonism and sexual ambiguity of pre-war Berlin, which made Liza Minnelli (who won Best Actress) a star.

Often described as a musical for people who don’t like musicals, it sets its scene in 1931 Berlin, against a backdrop of increasing antisemitism and the growing Nazi Party. We follow Brian (Michael York), a new British arrival in the city, as he befriends Sally Bowles (Minnelli), a talented performer at the risqué Kit Kat Klub. Full of brilliantly choreographed set-pieces, ‘Cabaret’ influenced generations of filmmakers and remains a key queer cinema film with its early exploration of bisexuality on screen. The film is centred around a truly fabulous performance from Minnelli, evincing both exuberance and vulnerability as she wields glamour against despair.

A director whose name loomed large over his films, Federico Fellini was one of the great Italian filmmakers in modern cinema. This is the first in a series of his films that we will be screening in conjunction with the BFI in early 2020 to mark the centenary of his birth.

A series of stories following a week in the life of a philandering Roman paparazzo journalist Marcello Rubini (Marcello Mastroianni), who could easily be Fellini’s alter-ego. The film includes the image of Anita Ekberg cavorting in the Trevi fountain, which is one of the era’s most iconic. Beginning with the startling image of a statue of Christ being transported over the city by helicopter, Fellini’s panorama of the contemporary Roman ‘good life’ marked a decisive turning point in the director’s career. Leaving behind his small-scale, realism-rooted dramas of the 50s, this episodic story of a tabloid reporter’s comings and goings within the decadent upper reaches of modern Italian society found Fellini moving in a flamboyant new direction. The film’s atmosphere of moral lassitude, together with its then scandalous sexual frankness, created a popular sensation, introducing the world to the word paparazzi.

Sam Mendes (‘American Beauty’, Skyfall’) returns with an allstar WWI film, accomplished with long takes and elaborately choreographed moving camera shots to give the effect of one continuous take.

At the height of the First World War, two young British soldiers, Schofield (George MacKay) and Blake (Dean-Charles Chapman) are given a seemingly impossible mission. In a race against time, they must cross enemy territory and deliver a message which will warn of an ambush during one of the skirmishes soon after the German retreat to the Hindenburg Line during Operation Alberich. The mission will stop a deadly attack on a British battalion of 1,600 men – Blake’s own brother among them. The film is based in part on an account told to Mendes by his paternal grandfather, Alfred Mendes.

Keep on Keeping on: A Tribute to Alan Bennett

It is hard to pigeonhole Alan Bennett, and correspondingly easy to undervalue his achievements. Although one of the most recognisable writers of his generation, his unassumingly owlish persona and fondness for self-deprecation has created the impression of a lovably eccentric minor talent, whose amusingly droll plays about elderly Northern women (typically played by Thora Hird) and fusspot secretaries (Patricia Routledge) are merely one step up from sitcom.

The idea that he might be the most important and innovative British television playwright initially seems laughable.

But it’s hard to think of a stronger contender. His prolific output includes individual television plays, television series and cinema films, together with numerous stage works, short stories, assorted journalism and his inimitable diaries.

An Englishman Abroad ,A Question of Attribution and the two Talking Heads series (BBC, 1988/98), are regularly cited amongst British television’s greatest achievements, and he is widely recognised as the master of the television monologue.

In this pair of talks we take a chronological look at the man and his work from his early plays like “Sunset Over the Bay” to his outstanding film scripts – The Lady in the Van,The History Boys and the Madness of King George among others.

Both talks are stand-alone but we do hope you join Rosemary for both sessions in what should prove a highly emotional and amusing event.

Illusions and Games: The Cinema of Jean Renoir

‘If you’re dealing with cinema, you’re dealing with Renoir.’ Martin Scorsese ‘The greatest of all directors.’ Orson Welles In 2012 much was made of the dethroning of Citizen Kane from the top of Sight and Sound’s decennial critics’ poll of the greatest films ever made by Hitchcock’s Vertigo. Inevitably, perhaps, little notice was taken of the film in 4th place, The Rules of the Game, directed

by Jean Renoir, which received 100 votes. Yet that film, a country house set comedy drama, has accompanied Kane in the top ten for sixty years.

On the 40th anniversary of his death there will be a rare screening of Jean Renoir’s classic short film ‘A Day in the Country’, followed by a talk which will explore the qualities that made Renoir such a highly revered filmmaker, using extracts from films such as La Grande Illusion, The Crime of Monsieur Lange and The Rules of the Game.

Daphne Du Maurier: The Cinema Director’s Dream Writer

Du Maurier’s novels are famous for the ease with which they transfer to the silver screen – stories of passion, tension and alarmingly candid psychological takes on her characters, both male and female, trapped in unhealthily obsessive relationships make stunning films.

Her writing was noted as being so strongly cinematic that Hitchcock made three films based on her work – ‘Jamaica Inn’, ‘The Birds’ and ‘Rebecca’ -while ‘Don’t Look Now’, the classic horror film directed

by Nicholas Roeg , was based on her story.

The novel, ‘My Cousin Rachel’, has recently been made into a film starring Rachel Weisz and the play is part of the Winter programme at Chichester Festival Theatre.

We are delighted once again to join with CFT in a three-part tribute to Du Maurier.
