The New Park Cinema team send our best wishes to all for 2022. Let’s hope that we can all stay healthy, and safely enjoy what the cinematic world has to offer.

We celebrate the introduction of 2022 by revealing an updated brochure design to mirror our exciting new website - which has been so warmly received.

As the film Awards Season approaches, all the top filmmakers, producers and distributors jostle to get their best films released just at the right time to be in the best position for glory. Kenneth Branagh’s ‘Belfast’ will undoubtedly be topping award nominee lists, as will Almodóvar’s ‘Parallel Mothers’, and ‘The Tragedy of Macbeth’ to name but three.

Joaquin Phoenix stars as a radio journalist embarking on a crosscountry trip with his young nephew after his estranged sister calls on him to help.

Johnny (Joaquin Phoenix) and his young nephew (Woody Norman) forge a tenuous but transformational relationship when they are unexpectedly thrown together in this delicate and deeply moving story about the connections between adults and children, the past and the future, from writer-director Mike Mills. Phoenix ditches his familiar intensity for sympathy and charm as Johnny endures a short sharp lesson in the difficulties of parenting. Woody Norman as the young nephew Jesse is also a revelation. Robbie Ryan’s monochrome cinematography is lovely and Mills gets to the heart of the story in affecting and uplifting style.

Riz Ahmed plays a decorated marine and father trying to save his sons from an alien invasion that may or may not be real.

Malik is a tough but troubled guy with military experience and access to military intelligence. He is galvanised by the top-secret material he has discovered – the truth about an alien invasion, which to his fury the US government has covered up. He has no choice but to rescue his two young sons from his ex-wife before it’s too late. There are elements of ‘Invasion of the Body Snatchers’ and ‘The Fly’ here as well as the doomed road trip in ‘Thelma and Louise’.

Tremendous taught direction from Michael Pearce in this cleverly confounding thriller. It’s deceptively simple yet deeply philosophical stuff, channelled by first-rate genre filmmaking.

The extraordinary true story of eccentric British artist Louis Wain (Benedict Cumberbatch), whose playful, sometimes even psychedelic pictures helped to transform the public’s perception of cats forever. We follow the incredible adventures of this inspiring, unsung hero, as he seeks to unlock the “electrical” mysteries of the world and, in so doing, to better understand his own life and the profound love he shared with his wife Emily Richardson (Claire Foy). Singular charm and heart-breaking tragedy achieve a lifeaffirming reconciliation while Benedict Cumberbatch gives one of his most memorable performances as a true English eccentric.

TEATRO ALLA SCALA MILAN A performance at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan is one of the highlights for any opera lover and the opening night of the New Season is the biggest occasion of the year for Italian opera.

With Macbeth, Musical Director Riccardo Chailly completes the series of interpretations of Giuseppe Verdi’s ‘youthful trilogy’ after Giovanna d’Arco and Attila. Macbeth will be staged by director Davide Livermore, his fourth inaugural performance and a grand cast: Anna Netrebko is Lady Macbeth, affirming her special relationship with our theatre, alongside Luca Salsi as Macbeth, Francesco Meli as Macduff, and Ildar Abdrazakov as Banco.

Operatic drama in four acts sung in Italian with English subtitles.

BEING THE RICARDOS

Nicole Kidman stars as Lucille Ball during a critical week when she was beset by personal and political smears. Aaron Sorkin is on writing and directing duties.

‘I Love Lucy’ was the most watched show in the United States in four of its six seasons. It starred Lucille Ball and her real-life husband Desi Arnaz. Sorkin’s film explores the controversy surrounding her membership of the Communist Party as well as her often unstable marriage to Desi. Kidman’s transformation is extraordinary, making her as unrecognisable as she was as Virginia Woolf in ‘The Hours’.

Sorkin brings his customary snappy dialogue as well as the skilful direction exhibited in ‘Molly’s Game’ and ‘The Trial of the Chicago 7’.

Javier Bardem is brilliant as Desi, while great support comes from J.K. Simmons and Nina Arianda.

THE TRAGEDY OF MACBETH

Joel Coen takes on sole directing duties for what many critics are hailing as a masterpiece. Denzel Washington and Frances McDormand are the ambitious couple with murder in mind.

Stark but utterly compelling, this chilling take on Macbeth is a visually stunning tour de force. Macbeth witnesses three witches foresee his future as a nobleman rising to take the throne of the kingdom. Lady Macbeth quickly hatches a murderous plot to hasten his ascension. Phenomenally dark and wicked and filmed in ghostly monochrome, this is theatrical and cinematic at the same time. The text is cut right back and Washington and McDormand find fresh spins on familiar phrases. Could McDormand scoop consecutive Oscars? On this form it would be no surprise. 5 stars – The Guardian.

THE KING’S MAN

In the early years of the 20th century, the Kingsman agency is formed to stand against a cabal plotting a war to wipe out millions.

In this third instalment of the hugely entertaining Kingsman film series, we are in prequel territory where we witness the forming of the agency against the backdrop of World War I. The Kingsman franchise chronicles the history of an independent intelligence agency that takes on the jobs that government secret services are often too slow or too compromised to deal with. Led by Ralph Fiennes’s Duke of Oxford, the agency fights against the evil machinations of among others Rhys Ifans’s Rasputin. A tip-top cast includes Charles Dance, Tom Hollander, Gemma Arterton, Daniel Brühl and Matthew Goode. Expect gadgets, thrills and spills.

LES QUATRE CENTS COUPS François Truffaut’s semi-autobiographical 1959 debut is one of the French New Wave’s most accessible and best-loved films.

Jean-Pierre Léaud is Antoine, a tearaway kid perpetually in trouble both in school and at home: his difficult family circumstances are only revealed at the very end - a cool narrative coup. Antoine resolves to leave home and see life for himself, eventually ending up in reform school. The film looks superb and Antoine’s heartbreakingly open face is like Truffaut’s monochrome Paris: beautiful, tough, innocent and yet worldly. One of the great movies about childhood, you will never forget Léaud’s extraordinary central performance or the film’s remarkable coda. As darkness falls outside and eerie things start to go bump in the night, the group’s deepest fears are laid bare.

The piercingly funny and haunting debut film from writer-director Stephen Karam, adapted from his Tony Award-winning play, ‘The Humans’, explores the hidden dread of a family and the love that binds them together. The Guardian’s Benjamin Lee gave the film five stars and wrote, “The Humans is going to haunt me and it’s going to haunt you too.”

Asghar Farhadi’s film follows Rahim, the kind of man who believes his charm and niceness can get him out of a jam. Freed from jail for two days he is looking forward to seeing his supportive sister, his son and secret girlfriend. When the girlfriend stumbles upon a bag of gold coins, the path to repaying his debts and freedom looks clear. However, events spiral when the coins are found to be a lot less valuable. Seeking to garner good publicity instead, Rahim returns the coins to their owner claiming to have found the bag himself – a small lie with huge ramifications. A dizzying single-take drama featuring a potent lead performance from Stephen Graham as a chef enduring a nightmarish evening.

Andy’s business, like his life, is hanging by a thread. Like a sulky schoolkid, Andy has had to begin the evening by listening to a sorrowful lecture from a food inspector who is less than happy with the state of the hygiene and the dodgy bookkeeping. Andy knows that he has to keep the restaurant going through sheer chutzpah, fronting it out at all times. Crisis after crisis in the kitchen and dining area propel the evening towards its titular finale. The pace never flags and Graham delivers a colossal performance of utter sincerity. Deliciously tense and fraught.

Struggling to make a better life for his family, Korean adoptee Chon must confront the ghosts of his past when he discovers that he could be deported from the only country he has ever called home.

Written and directed by Justin Chon, the film explores the consequences of a remorseless clause in the US’s immigration legislation. Antonio has been living in the country since babyhood, having been adopted by an American couple with a French surname. He has an American wife (Alicia Vikander) and stepdaughter, but he’s about to be caught up in the kind of red tape that entangles the lives of so many refugees and asylum. ‘Bayou’ is an angry film, lashing out at an ineffective, cruel immigration system that wrecks lives. Vikander has never been better.

LIVE BOLSHOI Emeralds for the elegance and sophistication of Paris, rubies for the speed and modernity of New York, and diamonds for an imperial St. Petersburg.

Three sparkling scenes accompanied by the music of three essential composers, feature the styles of the three dance schools that have contributed to making George Balanchine a legend of modern ballet. Emeralds is set to the music of Gabriel Fauré, Rubies to the music of Igor Stravinsky and Diamonds to music by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. This glamorous triptych was inspired by Balanchine’s visit to the famous jeweller Van Cleef & Arpels on New York’s Fifth Avenue, and created as an homage to the cities and dance schools of Paris, New York and St. Petersburg that made a vital impact on the revered choreographer’s career.

THE TENDER BAR

George Clooney directs the story of J.R, a fatherless boy growing up in the glow of a bar where the bartender, his Uncle Charlie (Ben Affleck), fills the gap where his father should be.

Based on the best-selling memoir by J.R. Moehringer, J.R., a Long Island native, spends his childhood living alongside his loving grandmother, his grandfather who communicates largely through farting, and his uncle Charlie. Charlie owns a bar where the shelves are bursting with dusty, ragged books. We follow J.R.’s struggles in life and love as he strives to become a writer. Affleck is the film’s great revelation. He wears the part like an old, beaten-up jacket, utterly believable as a man who’s accepted his destiny with noble resignation.

Keanu Reeves is back as Neo in the mind-bending fourth instalment of the sci-fi franchise.

Twenty years after the events of ‘The Matrix Revolutions’, Neo lives a seemingly ordinary life as Thomas A. Anderson in San Francisco where his therapist prescribes him blue pills. Neither he nor Trinity (Carrie-Anne Moss) recognize each other when they pass in the street. However, Morpheus offers him a red pill and reopens his mind to the world of the Matrix. Matrix films offer ground-breaking special effects, eye-watering visuals and plenty to ponder with their Cartesian philosophical dilemmas. ‘Ressurections’ continues these traditions with gusto.

Told through Ailey’s own words and featuring evocative archival footage and interviews with those who intimately knew him, director Jamila Wignot weaves together a resonant biography of an elusive visionary leaving you with admiration not just for the subject but the director too.

Based on Michael Morpurgo’s book that follows Jo (Stranger Things’ Noah Schnapp) whose father is in a German POW camp.

Jo discovers that mean old lady Widow Horcada (Anjelica Huston) is in fact heroically hiding Jewish children on her pig farm. Widow Horcada is also harbouring a Jewish man, Benjamin (Frederick Schmidt), who has become separated from his young daughter, Anya. Jean Reno plays Jo’s grandfather, a salty first world war veteran. The film is gorgeous to look at, all alpine flowers and glorious green mountains. It is also beautifully and sensitively told.

Set in Colombia between 1970 and 1980, a period marked by the bitter fight between left-wing Farc guerillas and radical paramilitary groups of the right, the film features Tilda Swinton playing an expat adventurer from Scotland, who, while travelling in Colombia, begins to notice strange sounds. She experiences auditory hallucinations and tries to find the sources of the sounds causing her insomnia.

Paul Thomas Anderson’s latest film is a romance about a teenage boy wooing an older woman, starring two extraordinary newcomers and stuffed with fabulously hammy A-list cameos.

A grinningly fast-talking 15-year-old boy meets a bored 25-yearold woman who works as assistant to a photographer taking pictures for the high-school yearbook. She is in equal parts amused, intrigued and depressed when this kid starts hitting on her, until she realises that she is somehow interested in him.

Of course, the love between Gary and Alana, if love it is, does not run smooth. This is lighter and sunnier than previous Anderson pictures; subtract the porn and indeed the sex from ‘Boogie Nights’ and you have something like it; remove the metaphysical anxiety from ‘Inherent Vice’ and that comes reasonably close too.

An ambitious carny with a talent for manipulating people with a few well-chosen words hooks up with a female psychiatrist who is even more dangerous than he is.

Starring Bradley Cooper, Cate Blanchett and Toni Collette, this remake of the 1947 film noir classic follows a charismatic, but down-on-his-luck carny named Stanton Carlisle (Cooper) sporting a caddish moustache who endears himself to clairvoyant Zeena (Collette) and her has-been mentalist husband Pete (David Strathairn) at a traveling carnival. With some newly acquired knowledge perfect for a grifter, Stanton plots to con a dangerous tycoon (Richard Jenkins) with the aid of a mysterious psychiatrist (Blanchett). Guillermo del Toro directs with customary verve and dash, all the while sustaining a creepy gothic horror sensibility.

In exchange for a fee, David agrees to help an Egyptian family who must stay a month on their land until a ship comes to take them away. When Patience pursues an affair with one of the outsiders, she is thrust into a violent and vicious psychological battle with David. This striking and stunning debut feature grapples fiercely with love, xenophobia and the wild coasts of England. It is bleak and beautiful, and the film’s fierce performances carry its nuanced and heartfelt story to great heights.

A young girl’s love for a tiny puppy named Clifford makes the dog grow to an enormous size.

Family entertainment doesn’t come much more charming and delightful than Clifford. Based on the book series by Norman Bridwell, Clifford is a tiny puppy who is given to Emily by an animal rescuer who tells her the dog will grow bigger based on how much love he receives. Overnight Clifford grows to be enormous and Emily and her irresponsible uncle Casey have to save him from being captured by the police as well as a sinister biotechnology company. There is plenty of comic mayhem as Clifford wreaks unintentional havoc across the city. John Cleese and Jack Whitehall star alongside Darby Camp who shines as Emily.

THE SOUVENIR: PART II

BFI Sight & Sound magazine’s best film of 2021! Drawing on a terrific performance from Honor Swinton Byrne, this is a story of profound emotional complexity and elegant storytelling.

In the aftermath of her tumultuous relationship with a charismatic but manipulative older man, Julie begins to untangle her fraught love for him by making her graduation film and sorting fact from his elaborately constructed fiction. Joanna Hogg’s film – a sequel to 2019’s ‘The Souvenir’ (and completely watchable in its own right) - dances on the border between a making-of story and the film itself, and the line deliciously blurs. The whole experience leads us to contemplate and indulge in the magic art of cinema. Look out for Byrne’s real-life mother Tilda Swinton playing Julie’s mother, and Richard Ayoade as an arthouse filmmaker, who delights via a combination of flamboyant outfits and withering lines.

After the war, Jim visits Jules, Catherine and their daughter in their Austrian home and discovers not only that his feelings for Catherine are unchanged, but also that they’re reciprocated.

A painfully moving story about uncompromising friendship and uncontrollable love. The joy in the filmmaking feels as fresh and audacious today as ever.

This is an intimate look at the extraordinary rise, fall and redemption of televangelist Tammy Faye Bakker.

In the 1970s and 80s, Tammy Faye and her husband, Jim Bakker, rose from humble beginnings to create the world’s largest religious broadcasting network and theme park, and were revered for their message of love, acceptance and prosperity. Financial improprieties, scheming rivals, and scandal toppled their carefully constructed empire. Firing up the Oscar race for Best Actress, a virtuoso Jessica Chastain captures Tammy’s brassy character caked in gaudy make-up and sporting trademark enormous eyelashes. This tale of innocence inexorably creeping towards corruption is captured with brilliant period detail. The camp rating is sky high and you will be captivated by Tammy’s naïve charm that hides a steely determination.

THE DUKE

We were very proud to preview this film in the Chichester Film Festival, five months before its official release.

In 1961, 60-year-old taxi driver Kempton Bunton (Jim Broadbent), stole Goya’s portrait of the Duke of Wellington from the National Gallery in London. He sent ransom notes saying that he would return the painting on condition that the government invested more in care for the elderly. An uplifting true story about a good man who set out to change the world and managed to save his marriage.

DOWNTON ABBEY: A NEW ERA

Follow-up to the 2019 feature film in which the Crawley family and Downton staff received a royal visit from the King and Queen of Great Britain.

It’s a new era for the Crawley family as they prepare to embrace the 1930s. Julian Fellows has created the new screenplay to be directed by Simon Curtis, and bringing back the much-loved original cast members, including Hugh Bonneville as the Earl of Grantham, Michelle Dockery as Mary Crawley, and of course Dame Maggie Smith as Violet Crawley.

Looking to follow the global success of ‘Murder on the Orient Express’, Kenneth Branagh has assembled a cast of Hollywood’s bright young things for a blood-spattered cruise down the Nile.

A classic whodunnit, based on the Agatha Christie novel, picks up with Branagh reprising his role as Belgian detective Hercule Poirot. This time, he is holidaying aboard a luxurious cruise ship when a couple’s honeymoon is suddenly cut short. Expect oodles of glamour, suspects popping up everywhere and delicious Egyptian locations.

KEEPING YOU SAFE

Here at Chichester Cinema at New Park, we follow the regulations as stipulated by the national Government, as well as the guidelines from the UK Cinema Association. This allows for the best possible experience when watching a film in our auditorium, while still keeping you as safe as possible.

In line with recent Government announcements, and our ongoing procedures, please note the following:

FACE COVERINGS ARE TO BE WORN AT ALL TIMES IN THE NEW PARK CENTRE, including the Auditorium. Please note that a visor is not considered to be a suitable face covering.

Social Distancing in the auditorium has now ended – however we provide a selected number of socially Distanced screenings at various times of day.

I t is worth noting that the air conditioning systems in both the Auditorium and the Studio draw in fresh air and have their own air supply (i.e. not shared).

We ask all patrons to practise social distancing where possible whilst on the New Park Centre premises.

A full Covid Clean of the auditorium takes place every day, as well as a clean of the main touchpoints in between every film screening.

We encourage booking online via our website and contactless payment at the box office.

Hand sanitiser is easily accessible at various points around the Centre.
