THE LAUREATE

A married couple on the brink of disillusion allows a stranger to live with them in their idyllic cottage. Will this stranger push their fragile state over the edge?

Robert Graves is the poet traumatised and creatively blocked by his experiences in the great war, Nancy Nicholson is his forwardthinking feminist wife, and Laura Riding is the charismatic American writer who comes to live with them in a scandalous menage. Movies about poets are always in danger of being precious, but here the preciousness is offset by a certain combination of eroticism and eeriness, particularly in regard to Riding herself who is not just the disrupter and life-force inspiration that everyone needed, but is also a predator and parasite. Brilliantly entertaining melodrama with bags of jazz age decadence and erotic undertones.

MAD ABOUT THE BOY – THE NOËL COWARD STORY

Noël Coward grew up in poverty and left school when he was only nine years old. He was queer in a very straight world. And yet by the age of 30, he was the highest paid writer in the world, and a star on the Broadway stage. He wrote, directed and acted in some of the finest plays and movies of all time, including ‘Private Lives’, ‘Blithe Spirit’, ‘Brief Encounter’ and ‘In Which We Serve’. He also became a world-renowned songwriter and performer of whom Frank Sinatra said, “If you want to hear how a song should be sung, go see Mr Noël Coward”. And if that wasn’t enough, he was also a spy during the Second World War! Featuring Laurence Olivier, Maggie Smith, Harold Pinter, Frank Sinatra, Lauren Bacall, Michael Caine and Lucille Ball.

MASTER GARDENER

A meticulous horticulturist is devoted to tending the grounds of a beautiful estate and pandering to his employer, the wealthy dowager. His past life catches up with him with the arrival of an apprentice.

Things between employer and gardener get tense when Norma (Sigourney Weaver) asks Narvel (Joel Edgerton) to take on her young grand-niece, Maya, as an apprentice. Maya does well in the job and when she starts getting threatened by a drug gang in her tough neighbourhood, Narvel’s own secret past in crime rises to the surface as he sets out to protect her. “Gardening is a belief in the future”, Narvel preaches, but it’s the character’s shocking past that forms the beating heart of this edgy drama from writer-director Paul Schrader. Weaver’s crackling grande dame imperiousness adds another layer of brilliance.

Puppetry, magic and storytelling combine in a unique, Olivier Award-winning stage adaptation of the best-selling novel. After a cargo ship sinks in the middle of the vast Pacific Ocean, a 16-year-old boy named Pi is stranded on a lifeboat with four other survivors - a hyena, a zebra, an orangutan and a Royal Bengal tiger. Filmed live in London’s West End and featuring state-of-the-art visuals, the epic journey of endurance and hope is bought to life in a breathtaking new way for cinema screens. This is a visually stunning adaptation of Yann Martel’s whimsical bestseller, with puppetry work in the ‘War Horse’ style, a vibrantly realised menagerie of beasts whose every breath is immaculately choreographed.

A HISTORY OF BRITISH QUEER CINEMA

A century of British film focusing on LGBTQ+ lives on screen from the silent era to the present day, illustrated by a range of clips. To complement Chichester Pride, Pride Month and our four LGBTQ+ films, this talk looks at the development of British queer cinema over more than a hundred years. At a time when British queer filmmaking is once again flourishing, with the recent success of ‘Blue Jean’ (2022) and the upcoming ‘Femme’ (2023), now is a great time to look back at British queer cinema pioneers such as Derek Jarman, Pratibha Parmar and the late Ron Peck. From pioneering classics such as ‘Victim’ (1961) and ‘My Beautiful Laundrette’ (1985) to more recent gems such as ‘Stud Life’ (2012) and ‘Ammonite’ (2020), this talk explores the incredibly rich history of queer filmmaking in the UK. Alex Davidson is a cinema curator at the Barbican and a former curator for the BFI National Archive. He has written for a variety of film publications, both at the BFI and beyond, and given cinema talks and presentations across the UK. His specialism is queer cinema and television.

THE ADVENTURES OF PRISCILLA, QUEEN OF THE DESERT

A surprisingly tender and thoughtful road movie with some outstanding performances - particularly from Terrence Stamp - as a group of drag performers take a road trip. When drag queen Anthony (Hugo Weaving) agrees to take his act on the road, he invites fellow cross-dresser Adam (Guy Pearce) and transsexual Bernadette (Terence Stamp) to come along. In their colourful bus, named Priscilla, the three performers travel across the Australian desert performing for enthusiastic crowds and homophobic locals. But when the other two performers learn the truth about why Anthony took the job, it threatens their act and their friendship. It’s a tremendous film that was ahead of its time on LGBT issues. Funny and compassionate, silly and sweet.

During the Miners’ strike two seemingly contrasting communities come together to form a surprising and ultimately triumphant partnership. Based on the extraordinary and uplifting true story. Set in the summer of 1984 - Margaret Thatcher is in power and the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) is on strike. At the Gay Pride March in London, a group of gay and lesbian activists decides to raise money to support the families of the striking miners. But there is a problem. The Union seems embarrassed to receive their support. This film moves effortlessly from some pretty intense dramatic moments to hilarious scenes showcasing the contrasting lifestyles of the gay and straight worlds to some vignettes of incredible poignancy. This is truly a joyful experience.

SUMMER CONCERT: BERLINER PHILHARMONIKER

Conductor Zubin Mehta and pianist Yefim Bronfman reunite this Summer in Berlin for a wonderful evening of Bartók and Tchaikovsky. Mehta and Bronfman have been artistic companions for many years - Mehta was on the podium when Bronfman made his debut with the Berliner Philharmoniker in 1983. During this programme, we will hear the two musicians in Béla Bartók’s highly virtuosic Piano Concerto No. 2, which alternates between percussive force and refinement - an ideal work for Yefim Bronfman’s vigorous, soulful playing. Zubin Mehta also conducts Peter Tchaikovsky’s dramatic Fourth Symphony, which reveals the composer’s suffering to the world but also celebrates the joys of life at the close.

RUSHMORE

The dazzling second feature film from Wes Anderson is equal parts coming-of-age story, French New Wave homage, and screwball comedy.

When a beautiful first-grade teacher (Olivia Williams) arrives at a prep school, she soon attracts the attention of an ambitious teenager named Max (Jason Schwartzman), who quickly falls in love with her. Max turns to the father (Bill Murray) of two of his schoolmates for advice on how to woo the teacher. However, the situation soon gets complicated. A true original: a film that stands apart from the crowd.

MOONRISE KINGDOM

Wes Anderson is bang on form in this sprightly tale about two unpopular kids who fall in love and run away.

The year is 1965, and the residents of New Penzance inhabit a community that seems untouched by some of the bad things going on in the rest of the world. Twelve-year- olds Sam (Jared Gilman) and Suzy (Kara Hayward) have fallen in love and decide to run away. But a violent storm is approaching the island, forcing a group of quirky adults (Bruce Willis, Edward Norton, Bill Murray) to mobilize a search party and find the youths before calamity strikes. It’s an adventure, a love story and a profoundly touching discourse on the needs of troubled children.

CHEVALIER

The story of Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint-Georges, often crudely referred to as ‘Black Mozart’, is finally given the spotlight it deserves in this rousing new historical drama. The illegitimate son of an African slave and a French plantation owner, Bologne (Kelvin Harrison Jr. in a tour de force performance) rises to improbable heights in French society as a celebrated violinist-composer and fencer, complete with an ill-fated love affair and a falling out with Marie Antoinette (Lucy Boynton) and her court. The violin duel with Mozart is particularly exhilarating, if not historically accurate. Bologne seems to have been erased from history, but this superbly enjoyable film puts him firmly back in the musical landscape.

A CRACK IN THE MOUNTAIN

Hang Son Doong is the world’s largest cave discovered in Vietnam in 1990. This magnificent documentary reveals the beauty of the cave as well as the tensions brought by fame and tourism.

Hang Son Doong translates as ‘mountain river cave’ is so large it could fit an entire New York block inside, including skyscrapers. Since its discovery it has been at the centre of controversial schemes to develop it as a tourist destination. This film examines the conflicting themes of exploration, environmental conservation and sustainability and the perils of operating as an activist in a country where freedom of speech is severely curtailed. Beautifully shot and scored, this is a powerful exposé about how good and bad intentions can ultimately lead to one of the world’s greatest natural wonders being exploited for money.

A fascinating documentary exploring the impact of sharing a name with one of the most famous fictional characters of our times - James Bond.

When author Ian Fleming needs a name for his suave, sophisticated secret agent, he steals one from an unaware birdwatcher and creates a pop-culture phenomenon about the ultimate fictional alpha-male. Seventy years after the publication of the first Bond novel and as all eyes turn to who could be the seventh 007, Australian filmmaker Matthew Bauer is on a global mission to discover the lasting, contrasting and very personal impacts of sharing such an identity with James Bond. This documentary probes larger questions of identity and privacy, throwing in a haunting tale of domestic abuse in its final act. We emerge by the end both shaken and stirred.

A grizzled loner discovers a huge vein of gold in Lapland only to be tormented by a platoon of retreating Nazis. Cue 90 minutes of glorious blood-splattered mayhem.

When the Nazis steal his gold, they quickly discover that they have just tangled with no ordinary miner. Should you want to spend 90 minutes watching Nazis get shot, stabbed, gutted, blown up, run over, and beaten with a variety of inanimate objects, in the most violent and gory manner possible, this war movie is the answer to your pulp-cinema prayers. The tenderness, wisdom and instinct to survive of two teenage males is beautifully observed in actor-turned-director Riley Keough’s debut feature.

The interlocking stories of 12-year-old Matho and the older Bill both from the Lakota (Sioux) community. Both characters share a flair for entrepreneurship. Matho wants approval from his father, which leads to a series of impulsive decisions, while Bill tries to hustle his way to the ‘American Dream’. The drama plays out at a slow and steady pace, designed to get viewers invested in both characters’ plights. Yet there is in their lives something genuinely uplifting and heroic. They want to give love and they have an untrained aptitude for it - but they are both let down. A moving experiment in collective narrative filmmaking, and an example of how stories can honour instead of exploit.

CLASSICS RESTORED & REISSUED HAIRSPRAY

‘Hairspray’ is perhaps John Waters’ most accessible film, and as such, it’s a gently subversive slice of retro hilarity.

Divine, Ricki Lake, Sonny Bono and Debbie Harry star in this musical comedy set in 1960s Baltimore. Overweight teenager Tracy Turnblad’s (Lake) dreams come true when she becomes the newest star on a television dance programme. She is soon the most popular dancer and finds herself the focus of some dirty tricks at the hands of rival Amber Von Tussle (Colleen Fitzpatrick) and her pushy parents. Amanda (Benedetta Porcaroli) has finished an unsatisfying period in Paris studying and returned to her wealthy family home in Italy, the scene of a near-drowning childhood accident in the swimming pool and the base for her extended dysfunctional clan. Like someone awakening from a dream, Amanda realises she has no boyfriend, no job and no friends. So when her mother (Monica Nappo) tells her that she once played as a little kid with a local girl called Rebecca, the daughter of her mother’s friend (Giovanna Mezzogiorno), Amanda sets out with fanatical determination to re-befriend this now adult woman. THE FRENCH DISPATCH

Wes Anderson’s three-story anthology featuring a student protest, an insane artist and a heist thriller - plus an absolutely stellar cast.

The title is also the name of a fictitious magazine that’s explicitly modelled on ‘The New Yorker’ and some of its classic journalistic stars. This is in fact a love letter to journalists set in an outpost of an American newspaper in a fictional twentieth century French city that brings to life a collection of stories published in ‘The French Dispatch Magazine’. It boasts playful breaking of the dramatic frame with reflexive gestures and conspicuous stagecraft, its aphoristic and whiz-bang dialogue, and the range of its performances, which veer in a heartbeat from the outlandishly facetious to the painfully candid. Marvellous from minute to minute, and an Anderson film that was missed by many due to the Covid pandemic.

Wes Anderson dips a toe into the world of kitsch 50s. With an incredible cast and beautiful pastel colours, this looks to become one of Anderson’s most dazzling, rich and playfully self-reflexive films to date.

Set in a fictional American desert town circa 1955. The itinerary of a Junior Stargazer/Space Cadet convention (organised to bring together students and parents from across the country for fellowship and scholarly competition) is spectacularly disrupted by worldchanging events including atom bomb testing taking place just kilometres from the convention. Anderson taps into the paranoia of the time, with the government and military involved in the reliably madcap proceedings. Yet he also captures the nation’s aspirations and inventiveness through the teenagers at the convention. “There is so much fun to be had and such delight be taken from this film. Though it seems as light as a soufflé, this is more substantial fare than Anderson has been dishing out recently. It merits second, and possibly third, helpings.” Evening Standard.

The outstanding cast includes many of Wes Anderson’s trusted favourites including Scarlett Johansson, Jason Schwartzman, Tilda Swinton, Adrien Brody, Jeff Goldblum, Bryan Cranston, Willem Defoe and Edward Norton, joined by Anderson debutants Tom Hanks, Margot Robbie, Steve Carrel and Matt Dillon. A sure sign that this is the one current director that all actors are clamouring to work with. Prepare to be charmed as only Wes Anderson can. USA 2023 Wes Anderson 104m

REALITY

Using the transcript of the arrest of whistleblower Reality Winner, Tina Satter’s superb piece of verbatim cinema asks questions about how power is wielded in real life.

A former American intelligence specialist was given the longest sentence for the unauthorized release of government information to the media about Russian interference in the 2016 United States elections via an email operation. The transcript of an audio recording of the FBI officers’ arrest and questioning of Winner became public; now Satter has used it, to the letter, as the basis of a movie. It shows us the moment-by-moment situation as Winner, superbly played by Sydney Sweeney, is politely confronted outside her house by the two federal agents. Reality can be stranger than fiction, but ‘Reality’ fuses the two to become stranger, and more riveting, still.

INTERNATIONAL PANORAMA: CHILE MY IMAGINARY COUNTRY MI PAÍS IMAGINARIO

One day, without warning, a revolution exploded. It was the event that master documentarian Patricio Guzmán had been waiting for all his life: a million and a half people in the streets of Santiago, Chile. The people demanded justice, education, health care, and a new constitution to replace the strident rules imposed on the country during the Pinochet military dictatorship. Urgent and inspired, the documentary features harrowing front-line protest footage and interviews with dynamic activist leaders and powerfully connects Chile’s complex, bloody history to contemporary revolutionary social movements and the election of a new president. With unassuming, generous elegance, the Chilean documentary master finds hope and political optimism in his homeland’s 2019 protest movement.

THE ARTIST’S GARDEN: AMERICAN IMPRESSIONISM

EXHIBITION ON SCREEN

Following the smash hit ‘Vermeer: The Greatest Exhibition’ we bring back two of the best Exhibition on Screen films of the last few years. This is based on the hugely popular exhibition ‘The Artist’s Garden: American Impressionism and the Garden Movement’ from the Florence Griswold Museum in Connecticut, widely considered a home of American Impressionism. American Impressionism took its lead from French artists like Renoir and Monet but followed its own path that over a thirty-year period reveals as much about America as a nation as it does about a much-loved artistic movement. The story of American Impressionism is closely tied to a love of gardens and a desire to preserve nature in a rapidly urbanizing nation. Travelling to studios, gardens and treasured locations throughout the Eastern United States, UK and France, this mesmerising film is a feast for the eyes. UK 2017 PHIL GRABSKY 90M

BACK BY POPULAR DEMAND THE UNLIKELY PILGRIMAGE OF HAROLD FRY

Harold Fry is an ordinary man who has passed through life, living on the sidelines, until he goes to post a letter one day... and just keeps walking. Jim Broadbent and Penelope Wilton star.

Harold (Broadbent) discovers that a former friend and colleague of twenty years ago, Queenie Hennessy, has cancer and is in a hospice in Berwick-upon-Tweed. The doctors say there is nothing to be done for her. Instead of posting his feeble letter of condolence, Harold instead embarks on a 600-mile walk from Devon to Berwickupon-Tweed, believing that in some way his journey will help his friend to live. “Tell her I’m going to keep walking and she must keep living”, he says to the operator before embarking on his journey. Based on the 2013 Booker long-listed novel by Rachel Joyce, this is sentimental but not cloying and will no doubt have you rummaging for your tissues. Back after sell-out screenings in May.

MEDUSA DELUXE

A fun and extravagant murder mystery that shines a light on the beauty of hairdressing whilst leaving audiences guessing in this quick-witted whodunit.

This comedic murder mystery filmed in one-shot, surrounds a group of hairdressers at a regional hairdressing competition. Their work comes to a grinding halt after the discovery that the rumoured frontrunner has been killed - from here this fun film unfolds into a story of detective work, rivalry and artistic obsession. Visually stunning with skilful editing and cinematography, these two crafts complement each other perfectly here, with the most impressive being the way it looks due to the cinematography work of Director of Photography Robbie Ryan - Oscar nominated for ‘The Favourite’ and ‘Fish Tank’. ‘Medusa Deluxe’ leaves audiences guessing until the very end about not only who committed the crime but how exactly Hardiman was able to pull off such a visually delightful feature debut. Benjamin Millepied’s complete reimagining of ‘Carmen’ tells a story through an experimental dreamscape featuring an original score and songs.

This is a gritty modern-day tale, with a majestic score by Nicholas Britell, and dream-like dance sequences that evoke magic realism. The story follows a young and fiercely independent woman who is forced to flee her home in the Mexican desert following the brutal murder of her mother. She heads for Los Angeles where her mother’s best friend owns a nightclub. Loosely based on Georges Bizet’s eponymous opera, this film revels in stylistic excesses that are always creative and often exhilarating. You’ll see lots of movies in 2023, and you’ll forget most of them. But ‘Carmen’ is so sincerely passionate and peculiar that you’re bound to remember it.

A son remembers his single mother: her wayward passions, her boyfriends, her yearning unhappiness - which he can see now but couldn’t then. He and his brother experienced the toughest of upbringings with her, as immigrants from the Ivory Coast in 1990s France. It is a narrative that is to end with mother and son meeting as adults, although these two people will perhaps never be able to see each other as such; never be able to decide if this a grownup moment for forgiveness or accusation, or if the burden of silence imposed by love has finally lifted.

Starring Mark Rylance, ‘Inland’ is a modern fairy tale that explores the fractured identity of a young man after the mysterious disappearance of his mother.

A young man of Romani descent returns to his hometown of Gloucester where he is met by local garage mechanic, Dunleavy (Rylance). They embrace, smiling, but what past does the young man carry with him? What awaits him back amongst people he doesn’t really understand and who don’t understand him? And what lurks in the forest, watching, silent, old as the trees? ‘Inland’ is an impressionist experience that dips into folklore horror, while also putting as much emphasis on realism and the psychological effects of abandonment. Verging on the experimental, this is a daring dance with the form and traditional rules of storytelling.

INDIANA JONES AND THE DIAL OF DESTINY

Daredevil archaeologist Indiana Jones races against time to retrieve a legendary dial that can change the course of history. Finding himself in a new era, approaching retirement, Indy wrestles with fitting into a world that seems to have outgrown him. But as the tentacles of an all-too-familiar evil return in the form of an old rival, Indy must don his hat and pick up his whip once more to make sure an ancient and powerful artifact doesn’t fall into the wrong hands. The titular MacGuffin can alter history and now the Nazis are after it. It will have been 15 years since ‘Kingdom of the Crystal Skull’, and this time the stellar cast includes Phoebe Waller-Bridge as Indy’s goddaughter, Mads Mikkelsen in villainous mode, as well as John Rhys-Davies and Antonio Banderas. This is an exuberant action flick that is highlighted by the charm and charisma of Harrison Ford, and it contains lots of satisfying fan service. From old friends popping up, to familiar situations unfolding in different ways, to a nice little spin on the iconic scene from the first film where our intrepid archaeologist lies bruised and battered. His girlfriend commented on how many years he’s been doing the punishing gig, and Indy ad-libbed, “It’s not the years, honey. It’s the mileage”.

Following the smash hit ‘Vermeer: The Greatest Exhibition’ we bring back two of the best Exhibition on Screen films of the last few years. This second offering is from award-winning director Phil Grabsky, providing a fresh new look at arguably the world’s favourite artist - through his own words.

Using letters and other private writings ‘I, Claude Monet’ reveals new insight into the man who not only painted the picture that gave birth to Impressionism but who was perhaps the most influential and successful painter of the 19th and early 20th centuries. Despite this, and perhaps because of it, Monet’s life is a gripping tale about a man who, behind his sun-dazzled canvases, suffered from feelings of depression, loneliness, even suicide. Then, as his art developed and his love of gardening led to the glories of his garden at Giverney, his humour, insight and love of life is revealed. Shot on location in Paris, London, Normandy and Venice, ‘I, Claude Monet’ is a cinematic immersion into some of the most loved scenes in Western Art.

THE HISTORY OF ‘THE SOUND OF MUSIC’

‘The Sound of Music’ is on stage at Chichester Festival Theatre this Summer and this talk will explore how the screen version became the most successful film musical of all time.

In 1962, 20th Century Fox was nearly bankrupt and the producer of the screen version of ‘The Sound of Music’, Richard D. Zanuck was having trouble convincing top directors to take it on. William Wyler hated the idea and Robert Wise was lukewarm. But, thanks to a new script by Ernest Lehman, he changed his mind. What changed? Was it the audience’s yearning for the belief and transcendence that once existed in cinema? This talk will encompass the source material, ‘The Story of the Trapp Family Singers’ through the earlier German version ‘Die Trapp-Familie’, the Broadway musical ‘The Sound of Music’ by Rodgers and Hammerstein and finally the film itself, which went on to win five Oscars, beating ‘Dr Zhivago’ to Best Picture. This talk from Andrew Vance of the Cinema Education Team, in collaboration with Professor Andrew Chandler of the University of Chichester, will also look at the historical background to the events depicted in the film.

TANGMERE AND THE ENIGMA STORY EXHIBITION AT TANGMERE MUSEUM

In conjunction with the screening of ‘The Imitation Game’ (below) to complement this event at Tangmere. This tour is only available as a joint Film & Tour offer. For ‘tour only’ tickets, please contact Tangmere Museum.

A temporary exhibition on ‘Tangmere and the Enigma Story’ will be held at Tangmere Military Aviation Museum from 1 July until 2 September 2023. It will cover how in 1933 three Polish mathematicians broke the encoded messages of the German Military Enigma cipher machine and how a French Colonel who had assisted in breaking the Enigma codes was rescued in 1944 by a Special Duties Lysander aircraft from RAF Tangmere. The exhibition will be located in the Museum’s Merston aircraft hall adjacent to a full-size replica of a Special Duties Lysander aircraft. Also on display will be a replica Enigma machine built in-house for the exhibition by the Museum’s Engineering Special Projects Team.

THE IMITATION GAME

Screening to complement the ‘Tangmere and the Enigma Story’ (above) at Tangmere Museum.

During World War II, the English mathematical genius Alan Turing tries to crack the German Enigma code with help from fellow mathematicians while attempting to come to terms with his troubled private life.

1939. Newly created British intelligence agency MI6 recruits Cambridge mathematics alumnus Turing (Benedict Cumberbatch) to crack Nazi codes, including Enigma - which cryptanalysts had thought unbreakable. Turing’s team, including Joan Clarke (Keira Knightley), analyse Enigma messages while he builds a machine to decipher them. Turing and team finally succeed and become heroes, but in 1952, the quiet genius encounters disgrace when authorities reveal he is gay and send him to prison. With an outstanding starring performance from Cumberbatch illuminating its fact-based story, ‘The Imitation Game’ serves as an eminently well-made entry in the “prestige biopic” genre.

SPIDER-MAN: ACROSS THE SPIDER-VERSE

Miles Morales returns for the next chapter of the Oscar-winning ‘Spider-Verse’ saga, an epic adventure that will transport Brooklyn’s full-time, friendly neighbourhood Spider-Man across the Multiverse.

He joins forces with Gwen Stacy and a new team of Spider-People charged with protecting the Multiverse’s very existence. But when the heroes clash on how to handle a new threat, Miles finds himself pitted against the other Spiders and must set out on his own to save those he loves most. Anyone can wear the mask - it’s how you wear it that makes you a hero. 2018’s ‘Into the Spider-Verse’ was hailed as one of the most unique comic book adaptations placed on the big screen, and this one is even better.

ELEMENTAL

An original new feature film from Pixar Studios (‘Toy Story’) set in a city where fire, water, land and air residents live together. Arriving at the culturally diverse Elemental City, the fiery Lumen family (Bernie, his wife Cinder, and their tough and quick-witted daughter Ember) start a new life for themselves. No one knows how to pronounce their names, and in a city primarily occupied by inhabitants comprised of water, they’re considered not welcome. Years later, a chance meeting with charismatic water element Wade, leads them on a journey where opposites attract and the two elements who physically cannot be together (literally, they cannot touch, as Ember will evaporate him, and Wade will extinguish her if they do) will come to realize just how compatible they truly are.

OPPENHEIMER

Physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer works with a team of scientists to develop the atomic bomb in this eagerly awaited biopic from one of the premium directors of the 21st Century, Christopher Nolan (‘Inception,’ Interstellar’ and ‘Dunkirk’).

Oppenheimer served as the director of the Los Alamos Laboratory during World War II, and is often credited as the “father of the atomic bomb” for his role in the Manhattan Project, the research and development undertaking that created the world’s first-ever nuclear weapons. This is a story rife with controversies and drama, which takes on nobody less than the man who ushered in a new level of war, whether he wanted it or not. Christopher Nolan wrote the film with Cillian Murphy in mind for the lead. Even though he has excelled as Tommy Shelby in ‘Peaky Blinders,’ carrying a major movie for the first time is a responsibility he takes very seriously, and has made a stunning job of it.

Nolan has commented on a unique aspect of the film where parts are presented in colour and others in black & white. “I wrote the script in the first person, which I’d never done before. I don’t know if anyone has ever done that, or if that’s a thing people do or not… The film is objective and subjective. The colour scenes are subjective; the black-and-white scenes are objective. I wrote the colour scenes from the first person.” The incredible cast includes Florence Pugh, Matt Damon, Cillian Murphy, Emily Blunt, Robert Downey Jr., Gustaf Skarsgård, Gary Oldman, Josh Hartnett, Kenneth Branagh, Rami Malek and Casey Affleck.
