On the New Park screen this season, we present a perfect blend of exciting new releases, an enthralling selection of World Cinema, and a delightful offering of cult classics.

Together with six Performance events and a talk on concert films, you can be sure that there is a film for everyone in this early summer season.

We continue our march towards the 30th anniversary of the Chichester International Film Festival in August, with our FILMFEST30 collection – this season with ‘Séraphine’ and ‘Untouchable’… and at the amazing price of only £5 each.

The Film Festival will launch with three Open Air Screenings at Priory Park on the 5, 6 and 7 August, and we will announce the films in June, so keep an eye out on our website and social media – tickets will go fast this year.

As has become customary, you, our supporters, will have the chance to help put on the Festival in a variety of ways, including becoming a Film Partner (£125/film or 3 for £300); a Festival Patron (£500); or to make a direct donation to our ‘£30 for 30’ fundraiser campaign. Besides helping to stage one of the best Film Festivals in the south, some of the proceeds raised will go towards our work in the community, such as ‘Little People, Big Screen’, where we fund young school children to make short films, and present them on the big screen at New Park.

SWAN LAKE

ROH The Royal Ballet’s sumptuous production of ‘Swan Lake’ returns to the Royal Opera House stage after its 2020 revival was interrupted by the pandemic’s closure of theatres.

Prince Siegfried chances upon a flock of swans while out hunting.

When one of the swans turns into a beautiful woman, Odette, he is enraptured. But she is under a spell that holds her captive, allowing her to regain her human form only at night. The reimagining of Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov’s towering masterpiece by Liam Scarlett is testament to the late choreographer’s abiding love of classicism and innate musicality which shine through the production. With a sublime score by Tchaikovsky and an irresistible mix of spectacle, mystery and passion infusing this, one of the bestloved works in the 19th century classical ballet canon.

WITNESS FOR THE PROSECUTION

AGATHA CHRISTIE SPOTLIGHT Agatha Christie’s whodunit plot whirs around Marlene Dietrich’s expressionless beauty. There will be an optional tour of the Chichester Festival Theatre’s ‘Murder on the Orient Express’ set prior to the film.

The affable Leonard Vole (Tyrone Power) is being tried for murder, and legendary lawyer Sir Wilfrid Robarts (Charles Laughton) has chosen to represent him. Unfortunately, Leonard’s alibi depends on the testimony of his callous wife Christine (Dietrich), who makes the shocking decision to appear in court against him. The definitive courtroom thriller, with two genuinely startling final-reel twists, this is one of director Billy Wilder’s strongest movies.

DOWNTON ABBEY: A NEW ERA

The much-anticipated cinematic return of the global phenomenon reunites the beloved cast as they go on a grand journey to the South of France to uncover the mystery of the Dowager Countess’ newly inherited villa.

Fans will be delighted to know that all the main cast will be back for the Downton Abbey sequel, including Maggie Smith, Michelle Dockery, and Elizabeth McGovern. Plus, a string of new cast members has been announced, including Dominic West.

While on tour promoting her new book with Alan, Loretta gets kidnapped by an eccentric billionaire who hopes she can lead him to an ancient city’s lost treasure from her latest story.

Channing Tatum and Sandra Bullock are a dream comedic combination in this charming exotic island caper. Bullock plays reclusive author Loretta Sage while Tatum is Alan the male model from her book covers. When an evil bearded British billionaire (Daniel Radcliffe) kidnaps Loretta and takes her to a mysterious island because he is convinced she can tell him about ancient treasure there, silly Alan has to toughen up and be the swashbuckling hero he dreams of being, by rescuing her.

Both stars are on top form in this rollicking romcom.

UN MONDE Life in a French primary school is a trauma to be endured in Laura Wandel’s gut-punch debut.

Following 7-year-old Nora and her big brother Abel, we see Nora struggling to fit in before finding her place on the schoolyard. One day, she notices Abel being bullied by other kids, and though she rushes to protect him by warning their father, Abel forces her to remain silent, while he endures more humiliation and harassment by his peers. Transposing the gritty realism of such filmmakers as Jacques Audiard and the Dardennes Brothers to the inner world of kids, Wandel crafts an empathetic and visceral portrait of the cruelty of children, and the failure of adults to protect them. Since becoming stage-struck lovers in 1948, Barry and Joan have taught, danced and acted alongside the greats of British film and theatre. They are the last of the golden generation of vaudeville, eager to pass their legacy on to future generations. Through their lens, we experience the wonderful and wacky history of performance from Vaudeville and Eccentric Dance to Commedia dell’Arte. This tale of two national treasures deals with the universal themes of aging, and how to apply our own uniqueness in an increasingly box-shaped world.

On 21 May, soprano Nadine Sierra takes on one of the repertory’s most formidable and storied roles, the haunted heroine of ‘Lucia di Lamermoor’, in an electrifying new staging by in-demand Australian theatre and film director Simon Stone, conducted by Riccardo Frizza. Show-stopping tenor Javier Camarena adds to the bel canto fireworks as Lucia’s beloved Edgardo, with baritone Artur Ruciński as her overbearing brother Enrico, and bass Matthew Rose as her tutor Raimondo. The character of Lucia has become an icon in opera and beyond, an archetype of the constrained woman asserting herself in society. The insanity that overtakes and destroys Lucia, depicted in opera’s most celebrated mad scene, has especially captured the public imagination. PISSARRO: FATHER OF IMPRESSIONISM

EXHIBITION ON SCREEN Without Camille Pissarro, there is no Impressionist movement.

He is rightfully known as the father of Impressionism.

It was a dramatic path that Pissarro followed, and throughout it all he wrote extensively to his family. It is through these intimate and revealing letters that this gripping film reveals Pissarro’s life and work. Born in the West Indies, Pissarro found his passion in paint as a young man in Paris, and by the age of 43 had corralled a group of enthusiastic artists into a new collective. Their first show was scorned by the critics, but the group had acquired a new name: the Impressionists. For the next 40 years Pissarro was the driving force behind what has today become the world’s favourite artistic movement. This film explores and highlights the enthralling and hugely important biography and output of an incredible artist.

SÉRAPHINE

A deceptively subtle tale based on the true story of the life and art of a simple maid discovered by a German art critic in the French town of Senlis on the eve of the First World War. Primitivist painter and outsider Séraphine (Yolande Moreau) toils as a maidservant in 1914 in Senlis, France. She harbours a secret passion for painting in the evenings, one that is discovered by German art collector Wilhelm Uhde. Taken by her enormous talent, Uhde becomes determined to bring her art to the world.

What makes this slow, intense film so compelling is its persuasive creation of complex characters: You scarcely believe Moreau is an actor and that the film isn’t, on some level, archival footage of the real painter.

NT LIVE Ralph Fiennes stars in David Hare’s blazing account of the life of a man whose iron will exposed the weakness of democracy in the face of charismatic conviction.

For forty uninterrupted years, Robert Moses (Fiennes) was the most powerful man in New York. Though never elected to office, he manipulated those who were through a mix of guile, charm and intimidation. Motivated at first by a determination to improve the lives of New York City’s workers by creating parks, bridges and expressways, citizens soon began to organize against his schemes, campaigning for a very different idea of what a city was meant to be. Directed by Nicholas Hytner at The Bridge, ‘Straight Line Crazy’ reunites Fiennes, Hare and Hytner who previously collaborated on ‘Beat the Devil at The Bridge’ in Autumn 2020.

Cabaret is 50 years old but this viscerally powerful, deliriously inspired musical stands the test of time, and then some.

In Berlin in 1931, American cabaret singer Sally Bowles (Liza Minnelli) meets British academic Brian Roberts (Michael York), who is finishing his university studies. Despite Brian’s confusion over his sexuality, the pair become lovers, but the arrival of the wealthy and decadent playboy Maximilian von Heune (Helmut Griem) complicates matters for them both. This love triangle plays out against the rise of the Nazi party and the collapse of the Weimar Republic. Liza Minnelli is brilliant in what’s the best role of her career.

A truly great movie adapted from truly great source material, but it achieves most of its greatness by thoroughly gutting and re-imagining that source.

TRE PIANI A tautly structured soap-operatic ensemble movie about four families living in the same apartment building and how their lives intertwine over the years.

Nanni Moretti’s ‘Three Floors’ is a film about three sets of owners of well-appointed apartments in the condominium whose lives are changed forever by the event of one night. Heavily pregnant Monica leaves the building alone, apparently going into labour. She steps into the dark street, urgently flagging down a motorist, who swerves out of control. In doing so, he knocks down and kills another woman.

This is Andrea, the drunk son of controlling judge father, Vittario and kindly judge mother, Dora, who live upstairs. Eliza Kubarska’s documentary follows the plight of the Nepalis expected to take huge risks to aid western leisure pursuits.

The director is climber and documentary-maker Eliza Kubarska whose film follows Ngada, who has eight Everest ascents under his belt. He is agonising about whether to guide a trio of experienced climbers – two Russians and a Pole – on an expedition to the unclimbed eastern face of Kumbhakarna, a more dangerous and difficult climb than Everest. The reason Ngada is willing to risk it is that his gifted son, Dawa, who dreams of becoming a doctor, needs money to fulfil this ambition. This is a balanced film that doesn’t pick sides. But Kubarska is asking us to consider the ethical issues involved when foreign mountaineers expect Sherpas to take huge risks in pursuit of their conquests. With her final exams fast approaching and her belly growing, Anne pursues an abortion and finds every door in her world closed to her. Potential prison time awaits those who are caught undergoing, executing or even enabling an abortion. The film takes on the shape of a human thriller, with Anne’s options shutting down one by one.

Deftly adapted by director Audrey Diwan from a novella, ‘Happening’ is a period piece, but it’s acted and shot with a shivery immediacy.

THE DUKE

Roger Michell’s warm take on the true story of how Kempton Bunton acquired the National Gallery’s new Goya features a glorious performance by Jim Broadbent.

A delightful true-crime caper told in flashback from Bunton’s trial where he stands accused of stealing a portrait of the Duke of Wellington by Goya from the National Gallery. Bunton has previously been jailed for not paying his TV licence and he is incensed that the gallery has just paid thousands for the Goya. Having stolen the painting he ransoms it in return for free licences for the elderly.

Broadbent’s droll take on a modern Robin Hood is a comedic masterclass. Helen Mirren is a hoot as his long-suffering wife and director Roger Mitchell captures grimy 60s north-east Britain with aplomb. 5 stars from The Telegraph and The Guardian.

TESTING, ONE, TWO

MUSIC FESTIVALS ON SCREEN - AUDITORIUM TALK It started with ‘Jazz on a Summer’s Day’ in 1959 – filming music festivals, capturing the music of a period as well as the mood of the time and, often, the audiences. These films evolved along with the music until Martin Scorsese directed what is probably the pinnacle of the multi-artist film genre with 1978’s ‘The Last Waltz’.

Sandy Guthrie from the Education Team will track this journey, which will include ‘Monterey Pop’ (see pg30) and ‘Woodstock” among other, maybe lesser known examples of the festival film. A selection of fantastic music is promised on the big screen in the auditorium with great sound, from this extraordinary period when film and music were changing and developing so fast. Hipster shades, flared jeans and beads are not mandatory as the music and films will set the scene.

THE LAST WALTZ

More than just one of the greatest concert films ever made, ‘The Last Waltz’ is an at once ecstatic and elegiac summation of a vital era in American rock music.

Invited to capture the farewell performance of the legendary group the Band at San Francisco’s Winterland Ballroom on Thanksgiving, 1976, Martin Scorsese conceived a new kind of music documentary.

Enlisting seven camera operators and production designer Boris Leven to design the strikingly theatrical sets, Scorsese created a grandly immersive experience that brings viewers onstage and inside the music itself. That music - as performed by the Band and a host of other generation-defining artists, including Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, Van Morrison, the Staple Singers, Muddy Waters, and Neil Young - lives on as an almost religious expression of the transcendent possibilities of rock and roll.

OPERATION MINCEMEAT

A stranger than fiction story of military misdirection in an effort to disguise the invasion of Sicily - starring Colin Firth and Matthew MacFadyen.

Two brilliant intelligence officers attempt to trick the Nazis into thinking that Allied forces were planning to attack southern Europe by way of Greece rather than Sicily. Their plan was to disguise the body of a recently deceased man, equipping it with misleading papers, then drop it off the coast of Spain where Nazi spies would take the bait. The absurdity of the plan throws up unexpectedly funny moments among the tense scenes of high-level espionage.

Adapted from Ben Macintyre’s book of the same name, director John Madden (‘Shakespeare in Love’, ‘The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel’) delivers an incredible true story of WWII intelligence operations.

Arch provocateur Gaspar Noé’s latest film is a solemn depiction of an elderly life muddling through the last stretch of their time on this planet.

Dario Argento plays an aging film critic attempting to write a book about cinema and dreams, while Francoise Lebrun is a retired therapist who continually loses track of where she is and who’s around her. From the moment it begins, the couple’s experiences drift apart and overlap many times over. The effect is less dizzying than meditative, as Noé and cinematographer Benoit Debie settle into the immersive rhythm of their subjects’ lives via a clever split screen effect that enables us to follow two realities at once. This might be Noé’s finest work – it’s certainly his most thoughtful.

Terence Davies directs the story of English poet, writer and soldier Siegfried Sassoon who was sent to a psychiatric facility for his anti-war stance during WWI. A decorated British soldier in the First World War, Siegfried Sassoon achieved renown as a poet via impassioned anti-war verses that landed him in a military psychiatric hospital; later, he emerged from the closet to live with unusual openness as a gay man amid the Bright Young Things of 1920s London, before retreating into heterosexual marriage and fatherhood, and converting late in life to Catholicism. The dialogue is quietly scathing, and the production values are sumptuous. But Davies seems most interested in Sassoon as a symbol of hemmed-in Englishness whose personal misery the director confronts head on.

Who forces Leonora, and Alvaro as the murderer of her father, to enter the hermitage of a monastery – and confronts them there, in a mighty showdown, with the brother who is full of hatred and cannot forgive? Is it a declaration of war against God’s promise of redemption? The heavenly cantilena of a solo violin rises at the end of the opera – in the face of the death of the hero’s lover and brother. Those who withdraw into the consoling twilight of a divine peace here are only trying to deny one thing: the force of destiny. This new production, directed by Martin Kušej, boldly updates the action to a war-torn region in the modern day. The famous overture was effectively used in the film ‘Jean de Florette’.

The story of two filmmakers—one prominent, one less experienced but perceptibly promising—searching for inspiration on Fårö, the island where Ingmar Bergman once lived.

Chris (Vicky Krieps) and Tony (Tim Roth) retreat to the mythical Fårö island for the summer. In this wild, breathtaking landscape where Bergman lived and shot his most celebrated pieces, they hope to find inspiration for their upcoming films. As days spent separately pass by, the fascination for the island operates on Chris and souvenirs of her first love resurface. Lines between reality and fiction will then progressively blur and tear our couple even more apart.

You don’t actually have to love Ingmar Bergman, or even have seen a Bergman movie, to find ‘Bergman Island’ terrific.

Ingmar Bergman’s psychological masterpiece is showing alongside ‘Bergman Island’, both films set on Fårö where the director kept a house drawn by the magnificent isolation and bleak landscapes.

Famed stage stress Elisabeth Vogler (Liv Ullmann) suffers a moment of blankness during a performance and the next day lapses into total silence. Advised by her doctor to take time off to recover from what appears to be an emotional breakdown, Elisabeth goes to a beach house on the Baltic Sea with only Anna (Bibi Andersson), a nurse, as company. Over the next several weeks, as Anna struggles to reach her mute patient, the two women find themselves experiencing a strange emotional convergence. This is an extraordinary and tantalising film fully deserving of classic status. (Subtitles).

THE HOLE Ten years after village documentary ‘Le Quattro Volte’, Michelangelo Frammartino returns with an observational piece centring on a deep-cave system in Calabria.

Young speleologists explore Europe’s deepest cave in the untouched Calabrian hinterland. The bottom of the Bifurto Abyss, 700 metres below Earth, is reached for the first time. The intruders’ venture goes unnoticed by the inhabitants of a small neighbouring village, but not by the old shepherd of the Pollino plateau whose solitary life begins to interweave with the group’s journey. It’s a magnificent piece of work, completely beguiling from end to end and one which wears its immense philosophical profundity with admirable lightness. ‘Il Buco’ proves that cinema still has the capacity to astonish in a very innocent, childlike way. MONTEREY POP

On a beautiful June weekend in 1967, at the beginning of the Summer of Love, the Monterey International Pop Festival roared forward, capturing a decade’s spirit and ushering in a new era of rock and roll.

Featuring performances by popular artists of the 1960s, this concert film highlights the music of the 1967 California festival. Although not all musicians who performed at the Monterey Pop Festival are in the film, some of the notable acts include the Mamas and the Papas, Simon & Garfunkel, Jefferson Airplane, The Who, Otis Redding, and The Jimi Hendrix Experience. Hendrix’s post-performance antics - lighting a guitar on fire, breaking it and tossing a part into the audience - are also captured. With its banners touting love and flowers, Monterey Pop shows the tribes before they went their separate ways.
