Chichester Cinema This is always a very exciting time of year in the Cinema world. Three of the main Awards Ceremonies follow one another to reveal the best films and performances of the year.

The Golden Globes have already been announced (11 Jan), with the BAFTAs on the 8th February and finally the Academy Awards on the 22nd February. You can see how many nominations each film received on our website.

On Saturday March 21st, we will be holding our Annual Film Quiz, A Mind for Movies, once again held at the Minerva Brasserie (see centre pages for full details). This is perhaps the most fun night of the New Park calendar, where teams of six (or less), come together to answer multiple choice questions on Cinema, which are presented in the form of image, video and audio clips. I will be joined by Film Lecturer Richard Cupidi to present the Quiz – Join us – and I guarantee you will want to return next year.

This film quiz was started by a very special cinema trustee, Marielaine Church, who passed away in 2014. To commemorate Marielaine, her joyous spirit and all she has done for the cinema, we have programmed a one-off screening of ‘True Grit’ (pg33) starring her favourite actor, Jeff Bridges. Chichester Cinema at New Park will be making a donation to The Motor Neurone Disease Association after this screening.

Many of you will notice that two of the big Awards season films, ‘The Theory of Everything’ and ‘Boyhood’, are not included in this brochure. I can confirm that they will be screened at the beginning of our next programme, with the dates and times being confirmed by the end of January. Keep an eye out for updates in the Cinema Foyer, or better still, join our weekly email list (via our website: www.chichestercinema.org) to be made aware of the dates as soon as we put them on sale.

Page to Screen Course For Better or For Worse A study of male/female relationships in book and film.

Following the success of previous courses, the Spring ‘Page to Screen’ course will include seven films from different countries and times. The recurrent theme running throughout is the nature of male/female relationships - “For Better or Worse”.

The course ends with a tribute to the much loved actor, director and producer, Richard Attenborough with two of his most memorable films which span his career - “Whistle Down the Wind “and “Shadowlands”.It can be helpful, but not essential, for attendees to have read the book. The course will be led

by Rosemary Coxon, a member of the cinema’s Education Department and a former English teacher and schools adviser.

Charlie’s Country

David Gulpilil won the 2014 Cannes ‘Un Certain Regard’ Best Actor for his role as an Australian Aboriginal who returns to living in “the old way”.

We follow Charlie (Gulpilil) as he makes his way through life on his reservation, finding solace and loneliness in the Bush, and following a dark path in the big city. A great mix of the comic and the sombre, the film rests almost entirely on the remarkable performance by Gulpilil. The film, to its credit, avoids coming across as pedantic or preachy, nor does it shy away from the very real hostilities and historical injustices that are endemic to Australian history.

‘Charlie’s Country’ comes across as far more than some tourist destination, we are invited into his land to experience the highs and lows of the life he has made there. De Heer has a proven record with films such as ‘The Tracker’ and ‘Ten Canoes’, and with the hypnotic Gulpilil in front of the camera, this is a film that will linger in the mind.

A witch tasks a childless baker and his wife with procuring magical items from classic fairy tales to reverse the curse put on their family tree.

This is a modern twist on the beloved Brothers Grimm fairy tales in a musical format that follows the classic tales of ‘Cinderella’, ‘Little Red Riding Hood’, ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’, and ‘Rapunzel’ - all tied together by an original story involving a baker and his wife, their wish to begin a family and their interaction with the witch who has put a curse on them. The star-studded cast includes Meryl Streep, Johnny Depp, Emily Blunt, James Corden, Anna Kendrick and Chris Pine.

An adaptation of Vera Brittain’s 1933 WW1 novel which focuses less on the trenches and more on the effect on those left at home.

Spring 1914, and Vera (Alicia Vikander, a Swede displaying a faultless Brit accent), her brother Edward (Taron Egerton) and his friend Victor (Colin Morgan from BBC’s ‘Merlin’) prepare to go to Oxford, but her parents (Dominic West and Emily Watson) won’t let her go. But Vera has her heart set on it, doubly so when she meets the handsome Roland (Kit Harington, from ‘Game of Thrones’). Just as they’re set to start Oxford together, war breaks out, and the boys, feeling they have to do their duty, enlist. Feeling helpless with the boys in her life facing danger, Vera drops out of university to become a nurse, but in the face of so much carnage, do her beau, her brother, and her admirer stand anything close to a chance?

Frank Sinatra, Marlon Brando and Jean Simmons star in this beautifully restored musical classic set in the 1950’s.

Nathan Detroit (Sinatra), the fixer of New York’s longest established floating crap game, is feeling the heat on all sides. The cops are bearing down on him, his clientele have full wallets and itchy dice fingers, and his fiancée is demanding a wedding that’s been 14 years in the making. Desperate for cash to arrange his next game, Nathan makes a sucker bet with travelling high-roller Sky Masterson (Brando): woo the leader of the local save-a-soul mission, or lose $1000.

Both gambler and fixer get more than they bargained for when love and the law start to close in on their games and the stakes start to rise heavenward.

British Artists and the Spanish Civil War To complement and support the exhibition at Pallant House Gallery, Chichester, we present the following 2 films screening at Chichester Cinema at New Park.

The Guernica Children In the wake of the bombing of Guernica during the Spanish Civil War, four thousand Basque refugee children were evacuated to Britain.

This was the largest single contingent of refugees ever to arrive in this country.

Seventy years on, we hear their extraordinary story and of the conflict between humanitarian need and political convenience that ensued.

Ken Loach’s acclaimed 1936-set film about the Spanish Civil War stars Ian Hart as a disillusioned Liverpudlian who decides to follow his principles and join the fight against fascism in Spain.

Taking up with a poorly armed Republican alliance, he soon becomes enmeshed in the desperate struggle to protect the country’s democratic government from General Franco’s advancing armies.

David bonds deeply with his comrades, especially the beautiful Blanca (Rosana Pastor), but is dismayed as political infighting threatens to plunge the whole resistance movement into turmoil.

Taking the starring role of Chénier, with its three marvellous arias, is Jonas Kaufmann, Dutch soprano EvaMaria Westbroek sings the role of Chénier’s beloved Maddalena (which includes the great aria ‘La mamma morta’, a favourite with Maria Callas) and Serbian baritone Zeljko Lucic stars as Carlo Grard - the servant-turnedrevolutionary who is Chénier’s rival for the love of Maddalena.

Shakespeare’s comedy delights in championing and then unravelling an unrealistic vow, and mischievously suggesting that the study of the opposite sex is in fact the highest of all academic endeavours. Romantic comedy is a difficult genre to perfect and it has rarely been done as well as it is here. Hepburn and Peppard create the kind of screen chemistry that comes along all too rarely. The humour and the Oscar-winning refrains of Henry Mancini’s score maintain the feelgood factor, and the result is a charming fable of love in big, bad New York. All this, and one of the best cats ever to grace the screen.

From director Clint Eastwood comes “American Sniper,” starring Bradley Cooper as the most lethal sniper in U.S. military history.

In Iraq Chris Kyle is a deadly killer, known as the Legend and with a bounty on his head. Back home he is a husband and father.

The contrast between these two personas is difficult for him to come to terms with, especially with his macho upbringing where asking for emotional or mental help is seen as a weakness.

Cooper, who has gone from just a pretty face to genuine actor and movie star, clearly threw himself into the part. He bulked up considerably and speaks with a Texan accent. Eastwood directs the action packed scenes very well, but it is the quieter scenes behind the scope, where Kyle must choose life or death for those in his sights, that stay with you.

The feud between the Montague and Capulet families is bringing bloodshed to the streets of Verona. So when the Capulets organise a masked ball in honour of their daughter Juliet, Romeo Montague and his friend Mercutio attend incognito. The young couple fall hopelessly in love, but soon realise that they belong to rival houses. Choreographed by the Bolshoi’s legendary former artistic director Yuri Grigorovich, this production benefits from outstanding performances by Alexander Volchkov as Romeo and Anna Nikulina as Juliet.

Its centrepiece is the instantly recognisable, supremely dramatic ‘Dance of the Knights’, which was appropriated as the theme tune for ‘The Apprentice’.

Tony Palmer introduces his documentary originally made for Czechoslovakian television.

In the early 1980s Palmer visited Prague looking for books about Dvořák, Czechoslovakia’s most famous composer, surprisingly, there were none.

In 1988 he filmed a new recording of the Cello Concerto in Prague, the soloist was Julian Lloyd-Webber. There is now added poignancy since he has just recently retired from public playing. Dvořák Cello Concerto is one of the most popular concertos ever written.

‘Swan Lake’ is a perfect synthesis of choreography and music and, though Tchaikovsky did not live to see it become a success, his first ballet score is now synonymous with ballet itself, inspiring generations of dancers and crossing over into popular culture. From the earliest days of the Vic-Wells Ballet, ‘Swan Lake’ has been one of The Royal Ballet’s signature works.

In creating this production, Anthony Dowell aimed to return to an authentic version of the choreography created by the great Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov for the Mariinsky Theatre in 1895. The court scenes of Acts I and III have a dark glamour rooted in the opulent style of Carl Fabergé, while the famous lakeside ‘white’ acts are rich with mist, shadow and moonlight.

My Name is Salt Farida Pacha’s documentary profiles people and families who spend a few months out of every year living in a saline desert and mining salt.

Year after year, for an endless eight months, thousands of families move to a desert in India to extract salt from the burning earth.

Every monsoon their salt fields are washed away, as the Gujarati desert turns into sea. And still they return, taking pride in producing the whitest salt in the world. Director Farida Pacha has opted for a lyrical approach, evoking the insistent rhythms of the family’s labour.

The sound of the pump sets a bass drum beat that’s repeated in the sound of slapping chapatis flat for the grill, while shuffling of their feet across the salt to break it up adds a faster high-hat tempo.
