Legend (pg21) As Autumn arrives, so do the big-hitting films, placing themselves in the spotlight for Award Nominations in the new year. We have a fair few of these this season, complementing our usual fayre of cutting-edge Documentaries and eye-opening World Cinema.

We present ‘Legend’ (above) starring Tom Hardy as both Reggie and Ronnie Kray; ‘Everest’ (with Jake Gyllenhaal) which tells the fateful events of 1996 where many lives were lost after a storm on the world’s highest peak. Look out also for ‘Suffragette’ with Carey Mulligan as Emilie Pankhurst; Woody Allen’s ‘Irrational Man’; Robert Redford as author Bill Bryson in ‘A Walk in the Woods’; and Willem Dafoe as ‘Pasolini’ (we will also screen the Pasolini classic: ‘The Canterbury Tales’).

From Australia comes the Indie ’52 Tuesdays’; ‘Tangarines’ from Georgia; the gorgeous looking ‘Theeb’ from the United Arab Emirates; the cinema-poetry of ‘Horse Money’ from Portugal; the ‘Twin Peak’s-like ‘P’tit Quinquin’ from France; and the not-to-be-missed epic from Russia, ‘Hard to be a God’.

To mark the 75th Anniversary of the Battle of Britain, we join forces with the Tangmere Museum to present four special events, which include a Q&A with a hero who was there, two classic films, a talk on the most critical day of the battle, and a live musical performance transmitted by satellite from Biggin Hill.

Gemma Bovery An ex-Parisian passionate about Gustave Flaubert who settled into a village as a baker, has his world turned by a newly arrived English couple.

This is a clever re-invention of Flaubert’s literary masterpiece ‘Madame Bovary’. An erudite baker Martin (the wonderful Fabrice Luchini) observes the arrival of a London couple in his Normandy town and immediately becomes infatuated with the vivacious Gemma (Gemma Arterton), and starts seeing parallels to his favourite novel.

Village life is gorgeously portrayed and most importantly the film succeeds in making you care about what is essentially a silly woman making bad decisions; like many French films it’s all about the gloriousness of women, which Arterton more than lives up to. Finely balanced between comedy and drama this is a real French charmer.

Robert Carlyle launches his directorial career with a grisly black comedy set in his native Glasgow – and gifts Emma Thompson a standout role alongside Ray Winstone.

The film centres on a socially awkward hairdresser (Carlyle) who lives a life of humdrum mediocrity, until he cheerfully embarks on a new career as a serial killer. The demon barber’s macabre new life is complicated when he discovers his mother (Thompson) has her own secret. Winstone plays the local police inspector attempting to uncover the crime of the century while battling with his own hilariously inept colleagues including Tom Courtenay as his idiotic superior. Stylish visuals, ripe language, gruesome, and very black humour, the film spirals to an extraordinary climax that has to be seen to be believed.

Pianist Leif Ove Andsnes takes a musical and personal journey to understand and interpret what is undoubtedly one of the greatest sets of piano concerti ever written: Beethoven’s five piano concerti.

Andsnes is considered to be one of the top pianists of the age. In this unique film, we witness his four year journey to perform and record the five Beethoven piano concerti. Against this wonderful backbone, we also track Beethoven’s life from new-kid-on-the-block in Vienna to greatest composer alive. Phil Grabsky has secured exclusive and intimate access over this journey and follows Leif Ove all over the world. This is a beautifully crafted film with lavish cinematography.

In 1970’s San Francisco, precocious young cartoonist Minnie (Bel Powley) can’t wait to grow up. Her mother’s (Kristen Wiig) no-holds-barred approach to partying colours her adolescent judgement, encouraging her to seek grown-up thrills anywhere she can. Instigating a liaison with her mother’s boyfriend, Monroe (Alexander Skarsgård), she begins a passionate affair with a man two decades her senior, and despite the age gap remains utterly in control. Expertly handled and light-hearted in tone, the film boasts great performances, including a truly accomplished central performance from star-in-the-ascendant Bel Powley.

A quietly powerful study of a long-term marriage shaken by shock revelations, starring Charlotte Rampling and Tom Courtenay.

There is just one week until Kate’s (Rampling) 45th wedding anniversary when a letter arrives for her husband Geoff (Courtenay)… the body of his first love has been discovered in the Swiss Alps.

Kate had known about Katya, but not about their engagement, and now she must reassess her marriage in the shadow of her husband’s past love. Courtenay is so apt as the soft-spoken and rather private Geoff that even modest changes in his aspect register vividly. A wiry Rampling brings Kate’s whirling emotions to the screen with similar economy. This is a moving and absorbing drama, featuring two performers offering a lifetime’s wisdom and technique in their performances. It’s a film of small moments and tiny gestures that leaves a very, very big impression. It opened the recent Chichester International Film Festival, and was the outstanding British film at the Berlin Festival.

Over the course of a midsummer night in Fermanagh in 1890, an unsettled daughter of the Anglo-Irish aristocracy encourages her father’s valet to seduce her.

Liv Ullmann’s adaptation of Strindberg’s script stays very close to the original; the main change being that it now takes place on an estate in Ireland. Ullmann opens up the action only slightly, with the revelling Midsummer Night’s Eve crowds always offstage, heard but never seen, and fills the score with mournful Schubert and Bach. The incredible depth of human psychology, the love hate relationships with each other, their own lives, the class system, is explored both in action, dialogue, and in the settings chosen for each part of the play. The three leads, Jessica Chastain, Colin Farrell and Samantha Morton, each deliver some very challenging monologues, impressive performances - unabashedly theatrical!

Instead of retiring to enjoy his loving and beautiful wife (Emma Thompson) and happy family, celebrated travel writer Bill Bryson (Robert Redford), challenges himself to hike the Appalachian Trail 2,200 miles of America’s most spectacular and rugged countryside from Georgia to Maine. The peace and tranquillity he hopes to find, though, is anything but, once he agrees to being accompanied by his long lost friend Katz (Nick Nolte), a down-on-his-luck serial philanderer who sees the trip as a way to sneak out of paying some debts and sneak into one last adventure before it is too late. The trouble is, the two have a completely different definition of the word, “adventure”. The ripe chemistry between Redford and Nolte makes this hybrid adventure buddy movie a thoroughly enjoyable outing. Moreover, it is very funny, with as many laughs as there are mishaps on the Appalachian Trail.

In the lawless border area stretching between the U.S. and Mexico, FBI agent Kate Macer (Emily Blunt) is enlisted by a government task force official (Josh Brolin) to aid in their war on drugs. Led by an enigmatic consultant with a questionable past (Benicio Del Toro), the team sets out on a clandestine journey forcing Kate to question everything that she believes in order to survive. Blunt’s performance has an edge of steel. She brings off a mix of confidence, bewilderment and vulnerability, which functions very well against the alpha male characters higher up the chain of command. Their chemistry with her is a weird mix of flirtatious banter and almost fatherly, melancholy concern.

In a dystopian future, or strange alternative present, adults who are single (either through failure to find a partner or bereavement), must check into a hotel with other singles and find a genuinely compatible partner within 45 days, or they are transformed into an animal of their choice and released into the forest. But they can gain extra time for this “search” period with hunting trips into the forest to bring down rebellious singles who have escaped into the wild there, living as singleton outlaws. Lanthimos premiered this macabre adventure in black-comic absurdism at Cannes - his first English-language feature.

Charlie Chaplin Born in 1899 into abject poverty in South London, Chaplin’s first acting role was in the touring production of Sherlock Holmes in 1903 earning two pounds 10 shillings a week. 10 years later he signed a contract with Mack Sennett to star in a series of Keystone comedies at $125 a week. Within two years of arriving in Hollywood Chaplin was the most famous and highest paid film star in the world. In this talk Ellen Cheshire will trace Chaplin’s rise from the workhouses of Victorian London to international fame, sharing rare finds from the Chaplin Archive.

A Technical History of Film

Michael Cox, a cinema trustee, will present a new and exciting contribution to our education programme in a two hour journey through the technical developments which bring the art form of cinema to the Silver Screen.

He will cover the period from 1895 until the present day and, with illustrations from moving and still images, will discuss how the pioneers of motion pictures developed film, studios, projectors and cinemas. The talk will also show how enhancements were made to sound, colour, depth and screen design over the period, such as VistaVision, Cinerama, CinemaScope, 3D, 70mm, Imax, Dolby Sound and Digital pictures. Michael Cox worked for 20 years at the Head Office of the Associated British Picture Corporation who owned one thousand ABC Cinemas across the UK. 120m
