Newnan First United Methodist Church
33 Greenville Street | 770.253.7400 | hello@newnanfumc.org
Dear Newnan First UMC family,
A
s fall settles in, I’ve been sitting with Paul’s words in Colossians 1: “The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For in him all things were created... He is before all things, and in him all things hold together.”
All things. The ones you love and the ones I love, and plenty neither of us would pick. Every prayer you’ve prayed, every meal this church has carried to a grieving family, every child baptized at our font, every heart in these pews. In Christ, all of it is held together. It’s all connected.
Rev. Andrew Chappell Senior Pastor
achappell@NewnanFUMC.org 770.253.7400 (x202)
One of the most tangible ways we live out that connection is through our giving. So here is my ask: as we plan for ministry in 2027, I’m asking every household in our church to pray, fill out an Estimate of Giving card, and bring it to the altar on Commitment Sunday, October 25.
Last year, you showed what’s possible. The number of households pledging rose from 158 to 210, and the average pledge grew 5%. That growth came from every corner of our church family. This year, we would love to see 225 households take part. We’re all connected, but we each start from a different place. For some, that step is a first gift. For others, it’s giving more regularly, increasing a current commitment, or growing toward a percentage of income or a tithe. No one’s card is compared to anyone else’s. What matters is that each one is offered honestly and prayerfully, and together they hold up the whole. And they hold up real ministry: a children’s choir learning to sing and ring chimes at the same time, a Tuesday night Bible study where tired people learn how to rest, a group of folks going to serve in rural North Carolina, representing their church and their Savior. Your gift connects you to every one of them. Pledge cards will be in the pews and bulletins beginning October 4. Take one home, pray over it, and bring it back on October 25, when we’ll lay our cards on the altar together as an act of worship. If you’ll be away or would like to respond sooner, you can return yours by mail, at the church office, or online at newnanfumc.org/ give. One Sunday morning, Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, a Jesuit priest and scientist, woke up on an expedition in the Ordos Desert of China with no bread, no wine, and no altar. So he climbed a hill at sunrise and offered God the whole world instead: its work and its suffering, its hopes, everything that would be born that day and everything that would die. He didn’t have much to bring, so he brought everything. May we offer God our worlds too. Grace and peace, Andrew Chappell P.S. Every household matters, and yours is part of what holds us together.

t was a wonderful September! We hosted our Pizza with the Pastors for new and interested members, where we had six people join the church! We welcomed babies into the household of God through baptism, and we celebrated the lives of saints who passed, including Regina Burrell and Marji Thompson. It is a poignant reminder of our walk together with Christ- what Eugene Peterson calls “a long obedience in the same direction.”
Speaking of obedience… do you keep the sabbath? It is one of the most important commandments, and yet Rev. Connor Bell it is the one that we seem to have the most trouble Associate Pastor keeping. As we wrap up cbell@NewnanFUMC.org the series on the Exodus 770.253.7400 (x208) and remember what it means to be free from bondage, we are reminded that sabbath is a gift that reminds us of something crucial: God has delivered us, and the work is done. We are faithful when we rest in that knowledge. We are going to be exploring the sabbath together in the small group outlined below. Even if you missed the first session on September 29th, no big deal! Join us on Tuesday nights in October as we explore what it means to receive the gift of Sabbath and to practice it together. In Christ, Connor
Fall 2026 Small Group, Sept. 29-Nov. 10
Facilitated by: Rev. Connor Bell Led by: Dr. Ryan Bonfiglio, Candler School of Theology In a world that never stops moving, what would it mean to actually rest? Join us as we explore the biblical concept of Sabbath. This commandment is not just a day off, as a life-giving invitation to rethink our pace, our priorities, and what it means to be made in the image of a God who rests. Sabbath is disruption, resistance, and gift, all at once. All are welcome!

s we enter the last quarter of the year, I find it more fun to reflect or even ponder now on some goals I set back in January, rather than waiting until next year only to see how I have fallen short. I still have three months to read 17 more books! See, I started the year strong reading 5 books a month to meet my 50 book goal I set this year. But then I started school. Looking at this now though, I can put myself back on track if I so choose. Another goal I had was to keep active. For me that meant signing up for things I cannot get out of, and the financial obligation keeps me on track. Is anyone else still waiting for crunch fitness to open? Did they steal your dollar too? All that to say, I recently pulled out my star. Remember the one we got at the beginning of the year? I don’t know if you have thought much about it since then, or even know where it is, but I have kept mine in my bedside table drawer. I got the word “ponder.” I remember in the beginning of the year laughing and against Andrew’s directions trying to trade with my husband who got “fun.” But upon further reflection, I see just how much that word has interwoven in the last 9 months of this year. I hope you can think of your word too and spend some time in reflection and prayer and see how God has used that word in your life. Please share your reflections with me! Like my goals, I think we can remind ourselves of that word and then keep a look out these remaining months of the year and continue to see God working in and through us in that way.

eptember has been a great month at UTH. Confirmation launched with an awesome class of sixth graders, diving into and owning their faith. At the same time, UTH Sunday school has continued to be a great place to be on Sunday mornings with donuts and discipleship happening. The students are working through the books of the Bible most weeks with one week focused on Apologetics each month. On Sunday Nights, we have spent five weeks working through a series on wisdom called Now and Later. Over those weeks we have been focused on growing our trust in God, developing a better sense of His wisdom in our lives, so that we can live better, wiser lives now and later. Biscuits and Bibles has also been going strong with more students and adults diving into the Book of Acts before school on Wednesdays.

In October, we have a ton of awesome events happening. We have our Small Group Scatter on October 4. This is an awesome event where the students get to decide on an adventure to do as a small group with their leaders. It is a lot of fun and the students love the chance to decide what we are doing that night.
On October 14 we are helping run the games for the Preschool Fall Festival, which is a great chance to serve the kids of our church and local community while getting service hours for all the clubs our students are a part of. Our Fall Retreat to Great Wolf Lodge is October 16-18, and it will be filled with discipleship and fun! As a student said: “Jesus and Waterslides, what’s not to love!” Then we will be closing out October with the Holy Ghost Marshmallow Roast on October 25, in the Parish Hall from 6:00-8:00pm! ROOT345, UTH, and parents all come together for this annual family mission event for a time of fellowship and to serve our local community. Dinner begins at 6:00pm followed by a mission focused portion of the evening. We are still deciding what we are going to do, but in the past we have made care packages and more for Backpack Buddies and Elevate Coweta. The evening ends with a marshmallow roast, sharing a time of fellowship that spans all ages in Newnan First UMC’s community of faith. We highly encourage the whole family to attend and share in a night of service alongside your children and students. We are so excited for all this and more on the horizon. God is at work among these students and families, and we cannot wait to see how this upcoming month is going to impact our students in such an amazing way. Thank you, Newnan First UMC, for your support of these students and the work we are doing alongside them and their families!

eptember was a great month for Children’s. We wiggled, praised, and played while learning about God! The older children went to Camp Glisson and worshiped and learned about the Living Water. It has been a great month.
October will be no less fun! Our 3rd-5th grade Sunday School class has been driving down Route 66, and has now entered the New Testament! These children are learning the books of the Bible. They are important lessons in the Bible and having so much fun in the process! If you have a child this age, it is the perfect time to start attending! This group meets in the Preschool (Parish Hall), 8:459:45am.

Director of Children’s Ministry astuart@NewnanFUMC.org 770.253.7400 (x209)
Our 4 year olds to 2nd grade are reading their Children’s Bible. They are doing lessons and activities that help them learn the stories in the Bible! This month they are wrapping up Jacob and will learn more about Joseph and how God was with Joseph. Joseph knew this and put his trust in God no matter what he faced. You will not want to miss learning about his adventures. This group meets in the Preschool (Parish Hall), 8:45-9:45am. Our Wiggle and Worship (2’s and 3’s) and Children Worship (4 year old to 2nd grade) has so much fun praising and learning about God. This month we will be exploring and praising God’s love for everyone and how we can use our gifts to show God’s love to others. We will be looking into the gifts that God gives us and how we can use those gifts to help others. Wiggle and Worship meets in the Preschool of the Parish Hall during Sunday School hour. Children’s Worship meets in the Preschool of the Parish Hall during the 11:00am service. They are dismissed from the Sanctuary after the offering. In ROOT345, we asked the kids what they were wanting to learn about and we are spending the next eight weeks talking and learning about those things. We are building our “Faith Passport” at each stop! We have already explored being courageous in faith. This month we are going to be exploring the many ways that we love others, what it means to pray for others, what does “grow in faith” actually mean! We are so excited to do this series! If you have a child this age, please join us Sunday evenings, 6pm to 7:45pm in the Annex Hall. We eat dinner prepared by the amazing Mrs. Patty, and we have lessons, fellowship, games, and other activities. Let Ms. Andrea know if you have any questions.

e are off to a wonderful start to the school year! It’s been exciting to see our students back at school, settling into their routines, building friendships, and jumping into the many opportunities that a new school year brings. Our teachers have worked hard to create a positive and engaging environment, and we are grateful for the energy and enthusiasm they’ve brought so far.

Our recent Consignment Sale was also a tremendous success! We are incredibly smitchell@NewnanFUMC.org thankful to everyone who consigned 770.253.1237 items, volunteered their time, shopped, and helped spread the word. Events like this are made possible because of the support and involvement of our school and church families, and we truly appreciate everyone who played a part in making the sale such a success. Mark your calendars for our Fall Festival on October 14th! We are so excited to gather our preschool families for an evening of fun, fellowship, and fall festivities. This is always a special time for our school and church community to come together and enjoy time with friends and family. We are so incredibly thankful to Martin Pate who created our Fall Festival games and was willing to update them for us this summer! His creativity, talent, and generosity have helped make these games such a special part of our Fall Festival year after year and now they will continue to last for future generations! We are so grateful that Martin took the time to refresh and update them, and we can’t wait for our students and families to enjoy them again this fall! We hope all of our NFUMC families will join us for this special evening.

Happy Fall, Church Family!
S
eptember brought such joy to our music ministry as we welcomed all of our choirs back into rehearsal and worship! There is something wonderful about hearing the building come alive with music again… children’s voices down the hall, youth gathered together in song, handbells ringing, and adult choirs sharing their gifts in worship. We are grateful for every person who makes our music ministry what it is. As we enter our month of stewardship, I’ve been thinking about just how deeply music connects us. The music ministry is not simply made up of the people who stand in a choir loft or ring a bell. It is a ministry made possible by an entire community of people, those who sing and ring, those who accompany and volunteer, parents who make sure their children get to rehearsal, those who encourage our young musicians, those who attend concerts and worship, and those who faithfully support the ministry with their gifts. Every person matters. Every gift matters.
Dr. Caitlyn Dixon Director of Music
cdixon@NewnanFUMC.org 770.253.7400 (x205)
Over the past year, you have supported our music ministry in countless ways. You have helped send our Youth Choir on tour, welcomed new singers into our ensembles, encouraged our children and youth, supported special worship experiences, participated in fundraisers, and helped create spaces where people of all ages can discover the joy of making music together. We are deeply grateful. Your support is more than helping a program continue. It helps us nurture relationships, build community, grow in faith, and share God’s love through music. Thank you especially to everyone who participated in our Youth Choir Sponsor-a-Day fundraiser! Whether you sponsored a day, shared the opportunity with a friend, or simply cheered on our young people, you helped make their ministry possible. We are so thankful for the ways you continue to invest in our youth and in the experiences that shape their faith. Our next Youth Choir fundraiser, Butter Braids, begins this month! Sales will run from October 18 through November 15, with orders available for pickup on Saturday, December 5. These delicious pastries are perfect for holiday breakfasts, gifts, or simply keeping on hand for a special treat. We hope you’ll consider participating and sharing the fundraiser with friends, family, and neighbors. This month, as we celebrate being Connected, may we remember that generosity is one of the ways we live out that connection. We give because we have first received so much. We give with gratitude for what God has entrusted to us, and we give knowing that our gifts can become part of something larger than any one of us. As our Connected series will remind us, we are blessed to become a blessing. Thank you for being part of this music ministry. Thank you for your voices, your time, your encouragement, your prayers, your generosity, and your presence. Together, we make music. Together, we build community. Together, we share God’s love. Soli Deo Gloria, Caitie
