“It’s hard to have a recession when people are working.”
That was Dr. W. Joey Smith’s key takeaway at the UWG Economic Outlook Breakfast, where he told business leaders that steady job growth is keeping the economy strong.
The West Georgia region’s unemployment rate sits at 3.3%, lower than the national 4.1% and Georgia’s 3.6%. Coweta and Heard counties boast just 3% unemployment, with Paulding at 2.9%. “We’re doing better than last year—just a smidge—but still really well,” Smith said.
Despite early recession fears, economic predictions have improved. Job creation continues, with Georgia adding 42,000 jobs in 2024. Sectors like healthcare, hospitality, construction, and manufacturing saw gains, while textiles and temporary jobs declined.
West Georgia remains a manufacturing bright spot, adding 5,491 jobs this year, including 1,085 in construction and 262 in manufacturing. The auto industry, with 7,500 regional jobs, remains strong, fueled by Georgia’s expanding EV and battery production.
While office vacancies rise in Atlanta, West Georgia’s diverse economy remains resilient. “We’ve surpassed pre-COVID employment levels,” Smith said. “And we’re still growing.”
Artificial intelligence isn’t the future, it’s already here. Whether predicting text messages, generating search results, or handling customer service calls, AI is reshaping how we work and live.
At the University of West Georgia’s Economic Outlook Breakfast, Daniel J. Nichols, an investment executive with Jennison Equity Strategies, highlighted AI’s explosive growth. He compared adoption rates: it took mobile phones 16 years to reach 100 million users, but ChatGPT hit that milestone in just nine months.
“AI will be big—bigger than most realize,” Nichols told regional leaders. “Companies that lead in AI will make big money.”
Unlike traditional computing, which processes one task at a time, AI-powered GPUs handle multiple tasks simultaneously, mimicking human thinking. Nvidia, which pioneered GPUs for gaming in 1999, has since leveraged them for bitcoin mining, medical research, and AI development.
AI is already transforming medicine, logistics, and customer service. FedEx uses AI to optimize package delivery, and the da Vinci Surgical System, in use for nearly 20 years, assists doctors with robotic precision. AI-driven protein mapping, which once took decades, now happens in years—revolutionizing disease research.
While some jobs will disappear, Nichols emphasized that AI would
create new opportunities. “It’s not just evolutionary—it’s revolutionary,” added Dr. W. Joey Smith, UWG’s economics chair. Despite concerns about AI’s impact, history shows technological shifts create more jobs than they eliminate. Nichols and Smith remain optimistic: “The future of AI is you and a computer solving problems together. This is a big win.”
West Georgia—and the nation—is rapidly aging. Dr. W. Joey Smith, economics chair at the University of West Georgia, highlighted the dramatic rise in the 65+ population at the Economic Outlook Breakfast on Oct. 29 in Carrollton.
“We’re going to see a drastic increase in people over 65,” Smith said. By 2060, that demographic will grow by 133,000 across Coweta, Carroll, Douglas, Haralson, Heard, Paulding, and Polk counties. In 2023, the region had 93,707 seniors, with Coweta leading at 23,782. By 2060, Paulding is projected to have the highest senior population (69,216), followed by Coweta (60,136).
Smith noted a shift in housing trends. Single-family home construction has slowed, while senior living options are expanding. “There are a lot more choices for seniors now,” he said.
While Georgia remains a top relocation destination, rising housing costs and mortgage rates are slowing moves— especially for retirees. Many homeowners hesitate to sell, unwilling to swap low-interest mortgages for pricier, smaller homes.
“Mortgage rates seem high, but historically, we’re about average for the last 30 years,” Smith said. With fewer options and higher costs, trading up, down, or laterally has become more challenging.

Coweta’s business leaders are back in action. From powerhouse businesswomen to workplace safety pros, small business advocates, and next-gen changemakers, the Newnan-Coweta Chamber is shaking things up with 10 dynamic alliances designed to spark innovation, collaboration, and impact.
After a pandemic-induced pause, several alliances are roaring back—revamped, recharged, and ready to make waves.
The Businesswomen’s Purpose Alliance is back, and Chair Deidre Bembry, State Farm, is making sure it’s more than just a networking group, it’s a movement.
“Women leaders have a unique experience,” Bembry said. “They juggle high-stakes responsibilities, and we’re here to support that.”
Enter Herstory, an initiative giving women entrepreneurs and executives a stage to lay it all out—the highs, the lows, and the grit behind their success.
“Storytelling is one of the most powerful tools we have,” Bembry said. “There’s raw strength in sharing our journeys.”
With a rebooted vision, the alliance plans to roll out quarterly programming, culminating in a major event in 2026.
The Coweta Safety Alliance is back, and Chair Justin Halford, Johnson Construction Group LLC, isn’t here to play. This isn’t about red tape—it’s about keeping workers alive and businesses compliant.
“Our goal is to expose hazards before they become disasters,” Halford said. “Companies shouldn’t fear OSHA—they should use it to their advantage.”
With monthly meetings and an active partnership with Georgia Tech’s OSHA training programs, this alliance is a must for any type of business serious about workplace safety.
Samantha Brazie, Progressive Heating, Air and Plumbing, chair of the Small Business Alliance, knows the struggle—and the triumph—of running a small business.
“We need to redefine what ‘small business’ means,” Brazie said. “Are we talking 100 employees or 1,000? The difference matters.”
From reviving the small business awards to creating a roadmap for navigating local government, Brazie’s focus is clear: make it easier for small businesses to grow and thrive.
Young professionals aren’t waiting for a seat at the table—the NextGen Alliance is making its own. Chair Autumn Hawk is in the trenches, figuring out what young leaders need and how the Chamber can fuel their rise.
“The goal is to empower the next generation to shape Coweta’s future,” Hawk said. “It’s about business, but also about quality of life.”
The Business Advocacy Alliance, led by Joni Scarbrough, Newnan Utilities, isn’t just about policy, it’s about action.
“We’re launching a focus group project this summer,” Scarbrough said. “We need real, unfiltered input from business leaders to craft an alliance that delivers results.”
From tracking legislation to simplifying red tape, this alliance is tackling business challenges head-on.
At its core, the Chamber’s alliances are about more than meetings and mission statements—they’re about real people, real challenges, and real solutions.
“Networking is great,” Scarbrough said, “but this is about more. It’s about putting business leaders in a position to drive change.”
And with these alliances back in action, Coweta’s business community is poised to do just that.

While many of the Newnan-Coweta Chamber’s alliances tackle community-wide initiatives, two stand out for strengthening the Chamber’s core: Leadership Coweta and Chamber Champions.
The Leadership Coweta Alliance, led by Chad Staples, More Music Foundation, and Mak Strickland, Strickland Debrow LLP, fuels one of the Chamber’s flagship programs. With an almost 30-year legacy, Leadership Coweta selects 25 driven individuals each year to deep-dive into how the community operates, connect with influential leaders, and use their skills for local impact. Participants must live or work in Coweta County during their program year.
But the alliance isn’t just about the current class—it’s about keeping alumni engaged.
“We’re working to connect past leaders, co-chairs, and class members,” Staples said. “It’s about continuing that impact beyond graduation.”
Faces of the Chamber
The Chamber Champions Alliance, chaired by Kaitrell Hall, Dianne Parker Allstate Agency, is the heartbeat of Chamber events. These ambassadors make every handshake, every welcome, and every new member introduction count.
“We’re the hands and feet behind every event,” Hall said. “We don’t just greet people— we build relationships.”
Each month, Champions meet to review new Chamber members, ensuring they feel plugged in from day one. Whether it’s a long-lost connection from school or a fresh introduction, Champions become instant allies for new members, guiding them through Chamber benefits and opportunities.
“It’s not just about signing people up. It’s about making them feel at home,” Hall said. “Community isn’t just a word—it’s what we create.”
At meetings, members lock in volunteer roles for upcoming events, handling checkin, greeting, and post-event teardown. Their goal? Seamless experiences that make every attendee feel valued.
Hall lives by Maya Angelou’s words: “People will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.”
“That’s what drives me,” she said. “We’re crafting an environment where everyone feels welcome and supported.”
A third powerhouse alliance, the Enhanced Investor Alliance, unites top-tier business leaders to advance the Chamber’s mission, ensuring strategic growth and sustained engagement.
These alliances aren’t just programs, they’re force multipliers, strengthening the Chamber from within while driving lasting community impact.
With Leadership Coweta cultivating the next wave of leaders, Chamber Champions fostering deep connections, and Enhanced Investors fueling big-picture growth, Coweta’s business ecosystem is primed for the future.

The Newnan-Coweta Chamber has long been a powerhouse for economic growth, and the Economic Prosperity Alliance keeps that momentum going. Chaired by Jonathan Watkins, City of Hope, this alliance brings business leaders and officials together to align strategies that elevate Coweta’s economy.
“We connect leaders, share insights, and find ways to support each other,” Watkins said. “It’s about collaboration that leads to real impact.”
The alliance meets quarterly, offering a front-row seat to local economic shifts. Leaders from top companies share updates, challenges, and opportunities. Meetings cut through the noise with focused discussions and a roundtable where each member gives a quick-hit update on their sector.
“That’s always valuable,” Watkins said. “You walk away with fresh insight and new opportunities.”
With continued collaboration, Watkins expects big moves from the alliance this year.
Coweta’s Non-Profit Alliance, co-chaired by Kevin Barbee, Elevate Coweta, and Hank Arnold, Coweta FORCE, fuels mission-driven organizations through networking, collaboration, and Chamber connections.
“This alliance is a game changer for local non-profits,” Arnold said. “We bring together leaders, experience, and resources—all in one place.”
For newcomers, it’s a fast track to knowledge, from fundraising hacks to administrative must-knows. But it’s not just non-profits helping non-profits—the alliance also links businesses and industry leaders with causes that need support.
“This informs the for-profit community about the critical work non-profits are doing,” Arnold shared.
Looking ahead, the alliance plans to integrate non-profit leaders into Chamber events like Business-After-Hours and Leadership Coweta, fostering stronger ties between business and service organizations.
“Non-profits start with passion,” Arnold said, “but they also need strategy. That’s where we help.”

The last week of January belongs to Coweta Works!
This immersive, hands-on career expo introduces Coweta County’s eighth graders to the wealth of career opportunities available right here in their backyard. Hosted by the Newnan-Coweta Chamber, in partnership with the Central Educational Center (CEC), Coweta County School System, University of West Georgia, West Georgia Technical College, and local businesses, Coweta Works equips students with realworld insights as they prepare to enter high school and map out their futures.
For three days, every eighth grader from Coweta’s public schools—plus many private school students—dives into a world of career exploration. Held at Central Educational Center, a charter college dedicated to developing competitive talent, the event gives students a firsthand look at industries where they can earn certifications and college credit while still in high school. The timing is intentional, Coweta Works takes place just before students register for their ninth-grade courses, making it a powerful, real-time influence on their educational choices.
Each student arrives at Coweta Works ready to explore. Divided into four color-coded zones, they navigate the expo at their own pace, drawn to hands-on, interactive displays designed to spark their curiosity. No rigid structure—just authentic engagement with industries that shape our local economy.

During Dr. Bob Heaberlin’s tenure as Chamber board chair, the Chamber proudly honored these influential leaders:

Under Garnet Reynolds' leadership as Chamber board chair, the Chamber recognized another outstanding contributor:
DR. BOB HEABERLIN – A dedicated educator and administrator, whose impact extends beyond the classroom into Chamber initiatives and other influential organizations.
Dr. Bob Heaberlin still remembers the day Carl McKnight gave him an earful. In 1988, Heaberlin, then principal at East Coweta Middle School, had borrowed a work crew from McKnight, the longtime director of the Coweta County Recreation Department. The crew was only supposed to stay for two days—but Heaberlin kept them for five.
When McKnight finally called, he was furious. The crews had other assignments, and Heaberlin had broken another rule—he had fed them Kentucky Fried Chicken and let them raid the school’s ice cream supply. Even after Heaberlin revealed that the crew had painted “Welcome to McKnight Field, home of the Indians” at the stadium—named after McKnight’s own family—McKnight remained unimpressed.
Despite that fiery encounter, Heaberlin saw McKnight as a man who made things happen for local schools. “No matter what you needed, he made sure you got it,” Heaberlin recalled. “All you had to do was ask.” If a student needed shoes, a quick call to McKnight ensured they had a pair. His behind-thescenes generosity shaped Coweta County in ways few realized.
Years later, as chairman of the Newnan-Coweta Chamber board, Heaberlin reflected on McKnight and others who had played a role in shaping the community. Many had long since retired, and newer residents didn’t always know their contributions. Heaberlin wanted to change that.
“It just hit me—how did these people impact the broad spectrum of Coweta County?” he said.
While outstanding citizens were honored through the Citizen of the Year award, that program focused

on those still actively serving. Heaberlin saw a gap. “There are people who, over a long career of giving, have been incredibly benevolent,” he said. “Whether with money, time, or work, they deserve recognition.”
And so, Legends of the Community was born. During Heaberlin’s tenure as Chamber board chair, ten individuals received the honor.
All the Legends left an undeniable mark on Coweta County, yet many never sought recognition for their work. Heaberlin believed it was time to celebrate them while they were still here.
“We always say nice things about people after they’re gone,” he said. “It’s nice to say them while they’re still alive.”
Fittingly, after Garnet Reynolds took over as Chamber board chair, he made Heaberlin a Legend of the Community himself, cementing Heaberlin’s own place among those he sought to honor.

I know you are thinking I’m about to blame it on Covid but it truly was a perfect storm leading to increased competition among insurers and rising costs industry wide. Understanding the WHY behind the WHAT is imperative.
1. Economic Pressures: Inflation and economic uncertainty have impacted the cost of claims and operational expenses for insurers, which can lead to higher premiums for consumers.
2. Natural Disasters: The frequency and severity of natural disasters have prompted many insurers to reassess their risk models, resulting in higher rates for homeowners and property insurance.

And for the early risers, the Breakfast Club at ALM Nissan showed that networking before sunrise comes with its own rewards—fresh coffee, fresh ideas, and fresh opportunities.

The Georgia Association of Chamber of Commerce Executives (GACCE) recently honored Candace Boothby, President and CEO of the Newnan-Coweta Chamber, with an Executive Service Award, recognizing 25 years of leadership in the chamber industry.
For 21 years, Boothby has transformed the Newnan-Coweta Chamber, driving innovation and positioning it among the nation’s top chambers. Under her leadership, the Chamber has maintained 5-Star Accreditation from the U.S. Chamber for 16 consecutive years, a distinction held by only 1% of chambers nationwide. In 2015, it made history as Georgia’s first Chamber to be named National Chamber of the Year, and in 2024, it returned as a national finalist for the prestigious award.
A Certified Chamber Executive (CCE)— the highest professional certification in the industry—Boothby is one of only four in Georgia. Her high-energy, resultsdriven approach has strengthened the Chamber’s role as the primary business
advocacy organization for Coweta County’s 750+ members.
Boothby’s 38-year career, including 36 years in Georgia, began at the Greater Killeen Chamber in Texas. Before joining Newnan-Coweta in 2003, she led the South Fulton Chamber and served as the Director of Public Affairs for the Greater Killeen Chamber, making Newnan-Coweta the third chamber under her leadership. Alongside her chamber work, she gained valuable experience in education, healthcare, and nonprofit leadership roles.
Her professional credentials include an Accreditation in Public Relations (APR), graduation from the U.S. Chamber’s Institute of Organization Management (IOM), and recognition as a Georgia Certified Chamber Executive (GCCE). Boothby’s influence extends beyond Newnan-Coweta. She chaired the GACCE Board, served two terms on the Association of Chamber of Commerce Executives (ACCE) Board of Directors, and led the ACCE Chamber of the Year Selection Committee. Currently, she chairs ACCE’s Fringe Benefits, Inc.
(FBI) Board, which saw her return to the ACCE Board of Directors. In 2021, her Georgia peers honored her with the Legacy Award for her lasting contributions to the chamber industry.
A Texas native and Baylor University graduate, Boothby remains a driving force in chamber leadership, shaping not just Coweta County but the chamber profession nationwide.

At the Newnan-Coweta Chamber, we embrace this spirit through Friendsgiving, an annual event presented by Strickland Debrow that brings together local nonprofits and businesses in a shared celebration of appreciation.
Born from the Chamber’s Non-Profit Alliance, Friendsgiving has become a beloved tradition held each November at the Newnan Utilities Cabin. This past year marked our fourth annual gathering, where over 25 local restaurants and organizations donated a bountiful potluck meal, from turkey to tableware. This event serves as a moment of mutual thanks—nonprofits express gratitude for grants, sponsorships, and community support, while businesses appreciate the opportunity to give back to meaningful causes right in their backyard.
Friendsgiving reflects what makes Coweta County special—a community that cares for one another. Local businesses and nonprofits collaborate, share ideas, and build relationships that strengthen our region. The Non-Profit Alliance, which meets monthly at the Chamber, serves as a roundtable for nonprofit leaders to exchange best practices and insights, fostering year-round engagement.
What started to reconnect during the pandemic and tornado recovery has evolved into a deeply cherished tradition. Committees coordinate food, décor, and door prizes, and every year, the generosity of the community shines—whether in a raffle basket or a warm embrace between friends.

Since joining YMMC in 2019, Bob has played a key role in the company’s success, from navigating challenges during the pandemic to leading strategic manufacturing initiatives across North America. His leadership has strengthened Yamaha’s presence in Coweta County, where the company’s Newnan facility employs over 2,000 residents and produces ATVs, Side-by-Sides, WaveRunners, and golf cars for global distribution.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Bob’s commitment to community engagement is truly commendable. He has served as Chair of the Coweta Grand Prix, an event supporting STEM education, and has been an active member of the Coweta Community Foundation Board of Directors. Through his leadership of Yamaha’s Corporate Social Responsibility Committee, he also helped drive impactful, employee-led community initiatives.

GeorgiaForward recently selected Brent Snodgrass, Newnan’s Leisure Services Director, as one of 49 professionals for the 2025 Young Gamechangers (YG) program, a leadership initiative tackling key challenges in a Georgia community. This year’s cohort will collaborate on solutions for Athens-Clarke County, focusing on community impact, the town-grown relationship, economic disparity, and regional growth over an eightmonth program.
Snodgrass joined the City of Newnan in 2024, overseeing city-owned facilities, rentals, community programs, and park events. He previously spent five years in Coweta County Parks & Recreation and ten years managing events with Medalist Sports LLC in Peachtree City.
A University of Georgia graduate (B.B.A. in Marketing, 2007), Snodgrass pursued a master’s in Sports Administration at Georgia State University. He serves on the boards of Bike Coweta, Friends of LINC, and the Coweta Youth Running Club.

Scott Sinkler, Newnan’s Area Sales Manager for Standard Office Systems (SOS), has been recognized for his exceptional sales performance, finishing 2nd company-wide for 2024. Scott exceeded expectations by achieving 193% of his sales quota, with $1.5 million in equipment sales for the year.
SOS has been serving businesses in Newnan since opening its local office in 1988, providing tailored solutions for copier and printer needs. Scott began his career with SOS in 1996 at the company’s Duluth office and later took over management of the Newnan office in 2018, following the retirement of longtime Owner/Operator Steve Bledsoe
Beyond his professional success, Scott has been an active leader within the business community, serving as the Immediate Past Chairperson of the Chamber Champions Alliance.

General Manager Samantha Brazie, who has been with Progressive for 14 years, sees the company’s partnership with the Newnan-Coweta Chamber as a natural fit.

Mike Robertson, CEO of Piedmont Newnan since 2014, has spent more than 25 years in healthcare, including 15 as an executive. He joined Piedmont Healthcare in 2002 and values the Newnan-Coweta Chamber as a vital partner.
“The Chamber connects businesses, elected officials, and local leaders, helping me build relationships with key stakeholders—potential partners, donors, and suppliers,” Robertson said. “It also advocates for policies that support local businesses, including healthcare, ensuring we have a voice in critical discussions.”
Robertson praised the Chamber’s workforce development efforts, including the Coweta Works program, which helps students explore career paths. He also highlighted the Chamber’s role in economic development, providing marketing, sponsorship, and networking opportunities that help expand Piedmont Newnan’s reach.
Outside of work, Robertson enjoys time with family and dogs, fishing, camping, gardening, clay shooting, and tackling projects around the house.
What started in 1994 as an online bookstore has grown into a global powerhouse. Amazon now sells everything from electronics to household goods and even produces movies and entertainment. When Amazon announced its Coweta County distribution center in 2020, the news sparked excitement across the community. Today, the company plays a major role in the local economy.
“With over 1,500 employees at our fulfillment center in Moreland, we’re proud to call Coweta County home,” said Will Cowsert, Amazon’s senior manager for economic development. “The NewnanCoweta Chamber shares our commitment to building a strong local economy, and we’re grateful for their ongoing support.”
Cowsert, a University of Georgia graduate and avid Bulldogs fan, has been with Amazon for nearly seven years. Outside of work, he enjoys golfing and spending time with his wife and two young children.

Beyond the dealership, Fitzpatrick is an avid sports fan who enjoys keeping up with college and professional football, basketball, and tennis.
