If you’re like many shoppers, you want to know how the food you buy affects people and the planet, including how it was grown, harvested and produced. You seek out greater transparency from stores like ours, as well as from your favorite brands and the companies who produce your food.
We, too, believe you have a right to know if what you’re buying aligns with your values! That’s where third-party certifications play a big role. When you see the little labels by independent third-party certifiers on your food, you know that product underwent a rigorous evaluation to ensure it met a set of strict standards.
To highlight the positive impacts these labels make, this April we’re celebrating Little Labels, Big Impact all month – honoring Fairtrade America, Marine Stewardship Council and the Non-GMO Project! By looking for the Non-GMO Project Butterfly, Fairtrade America and Marine Stewardship Council labels, you can shop sustainably throughout our store! Read on to learn how they are driving big, meaningful change in our food system!

Organic certification requires that farmers and handlers document their processes and get inspected every year. Organic on-site inspections account for every component of the operation, including, but not limited to, seed sources, soil conditions, crop health, weed and pest management, water systems, inputs, contamination and commingling risks and prevention, and record-keeping. Tracing organic products from start to finish is part of the USDA organic promise. Learn more at usda.gov/topics/organic #LittleLabelsBigImpact

11 Miles Away
Hungry Reaper Farm believes in growing food in a manner that is beneficial to the soil, water, air and people. They use practices that adhere to the National Organic Program standards, which means Hungry Reaper Farm never uses synthetic fertilizers or pesticides. They only use OMRI (Organic Materials Review Institute) approved inputs and strive to manage their farm in a way that mimics the systems observed in nature. Compost teas, attracting beneficial insects, crop rotation, biodiversity of plants/soil microbes, and cover cropping are just some of the strategies Hungry Reaper Farm uses to produce delicious vegetables for their community. The result is produce that’s both safe and ecologically friendly.
While farmers often get a bad reputation for being damaging to the environment, Hunger Reaper Farm believes that responsible management of farmland has the power to sequester carbon, protect our natural resources, and ensure stability of our planet for generations to come. Though they are not certified organic at this time, Hungry Reaper has an open invite to their customers to come to the farm and see their practices in action.

NEW MILFORD, CT Certified Organic 15 Miles Away
Fort Hill Farm is a family-run, certified organic farm growing in the heart of New Milford, CT. Farmers use growing systems that are based on time-honored, ecologically sound agricultural principles that build healthy soils, such as composting, crop rotation, and the addition of rock mineral powders. Since 2002, Paul Bucciaglia, Rebecca Batchie, and a skilled and dedicated crew of growers, apprentices, family, and friends have promoted practices that result in healthy soils, reduce pest pressure, and protect the environment. Fort Hill Farm’s goal is to produce the best tasting, freshest, organically grown food they can for local food lovers in western CT.
Fort Hill Farm offers a bountiful harvest of certified organic vegetables, herbs, flowers and small fruit on 15 acres of its 38 acre land base. Located on a terrace above the Housatonic River, the farm is blessed with flat, fertile, stone-free soils that have responded well to years of cover crops and compost applications. Customer favorites include local heirloom tomatoes, flavorful garlic, spicy fresh ginger, fresh lettuce, winter spinach, sweet corn, strawberries, and beautfiul flowers.
Fort Hill Farm’s farm stand is open to the public, and also supports a 200 share Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program. You can find their local nourishing produce at the New Milford and Westport Farmers Markets, as well as some specialty markets and grocers including New Morning Market. In addition, Fort Hill Farm gives back to the community it serves by making sizable weekly donations to the New Milford Food Bank.

Celebrating Earth Day in Woodbury is a tradition that began almost 30 years in the New Morning Market parking lot at their old store in Middle Quarter Mall.
After hosting an annual celebration in the parking lot for two decades, New Morning Market worked with the town and community partners to move the event to Hollow Park in 2012 as it had grown to attract upwards of 5000 attendees and more space was needed.
Come celebrate with us!
