Boston PIC Career Specialist, Mikayla Konopka, sat down with New Mission Senior, Sarah, to hear about her Summer internship experience at the Boston Children's Hospital High-School Healthcare Program.

Sarah worked in the childcare department where she supervised children during their indoor and outdoor activities. During the day, Sarah worked with the lead teachers to support the children in their day to day activities and assist during lessons and playtime. Sarah also worked with college interns and was able to network with her coworkers at the daycare, expanding her professional network. Frequently, Sarah also participated in Zoom meetings with other high school interns to participate in workshops about Microsoft Office skills, college planning, healthcare career panels, and end of the summer presentation projects.

In the future, Sarah hopes to go enroll in a college nursing or health-care related program, with the goal of becoming a midwife. During her internship, Sarah was able to attend a workshop on labor and delivery and connect with one of the teachers at the daycare who is in school studying to be a midwife.

Sarah stated that her summer internship increased her communication skills by working with children and their teachers. Her favorite part of the internship was working with the children and she is planning on returning this summer as an intern again. Sarah hopes to continue interning at Boston Children’s while she is in college as well. Reflecting on her experience, Sarah’s advice to other students is to participate in internships or summer programs to solidify your career interests and gain professional skills. Especially in healthcare, there are many programs that are great to participate in to gain relevant experience.

Thank you for sharing your internship experience Sarah! I know many will enjoy learning more about the healthcare summer internships!

a continuation...

He knew it was around 9 AM in the day, due to the position of the sun. He stood up and walked eastward, the land where the sun comes from every morning. The only things he carried was his dignity, willpower, and the clothes on his back. His breath was silent, like a creature in the night. His heartbeat made an unhearable sound. He had become one with the dunes; with the sands of eternal dance. His mission was to travel east; it drove him like a car with fuel brought down by the heavens. How far, he did not know. Where he wanted to be, he did not know. But something pulled him eastward. Like a string dragging a marionette, controlled by something beyond it. The shadow in the sands watched intently. The flesh it saw was weak, it would not do. But perhaps, this feeble creature might lead to greater things. The shadow slinked across the sand, but only the scorpions knew what it really was. Mael strode through a rough, carmine cavern, filled with a soft brass sand and a dozen pebbles. The golden sunlight of the evening glistened through the top and unto the sand, sifting to the sides as he dragged his feet through, mesmerised by the bronze view of the eastern distance. He soon made it to a cliffside, above the sea of eternal dunes and near a small spearhead plateau in the distance...

Colin J.R. Flannagan is an 8th grader at New Mission High School. He does not know when he started to find an interest in writing, but he has written for 3 or so years. He has written many stories over those years, with the majority of them being short stories. He enjoys adding his love and interest of ancient weapons like spears into his stories to make it more diverse and intriguing.

He says that one of the most defining traits of his writing is utter violence. He doesn’t really know how action became an important part of his writing, but he still really enjoys adding it, creating massive displays of horror. He says his favorite author is H.P. Lovecraft due to the amazing descriptions provided and the enamours horror that dwells beneath the pages. He doesn’t really know what his favorite genre is though despite his enjoyment of Lovecraft’s works, which fall into the category of horror.
