Message from the Head of School Dear New Mission Community, Please enjoy our third issue of the New Mission Titan Chronicle.

It is amazing to think that we have already entered a new quarter of the school year.

I am very proud of each one of our students for navigating the transition back to full in-person learning, and I am hopeful that we will be able to continue this momentum into next year. Please make sure your child reviews their quarter one report card, reflecting on their grades and experiences in class. As we begin quarter two with a fresh start, let’s encourage students to attend Homework Academy and ask for additional support when facing an academic challenge. As a school we have high expectations for our students, but we also have high levels of support, and we want you to reach out. So please don’t hesitate to contact us.

Dance Performance

Students in Dance have been working with each other in small and large groups to choreograph, learn, perform dance movements within the genre of contemporary and hip hop movement.

They have been courageously working towards breaking away from the traditional barriers to dance in schools such as anxiety, fear and self doubt to encourage one another to try and take chances outside their comfort zones. 9th graders in particular have shown a great deal of improvement in class focus and motivation. I look forward to seeing more growth.

SOCIAL EMOTIONAL CORNER

New Mission has been a Comprehensive Behavioral Health Model (CBHM) school since 2013.

As a CBHM school, New Mission has worked to support a positive climate and student’s social and academic success for all students in a variety of ways.

In October, students were invited to complete a social and emotional screener, the BIMAS-2.

The BIMAS-2 allows us to capture a snapshot of how students see themselves socially and emotionally. While not required, the vast majority of our students completed the screener, which is wonderful! The data from this screener will be used to help inform school-wide decisions, grade-level planning and also the development of small group and individual interventions. Our clinical team is partnering with teachers and parents to set up specific interventions for our students who indicated the greatest needs. We will be sharing the summary results of the screener soon!

We are also curious to hear if parents may be interested in completing the BIMAS-2, parent version. The screener is 34 items long and takes about 5 minutes to complete via an emailed link. Please e-mail Dr. Lisa van Luling, our school psychologist, if you would like to discuss this or share your thoughts on the process.

TEACHER SPOTLIGHTS: ENGLISH LANGUAGE DEPARTMENT Ms. Robinson is an English Language Educator and chair of the school’s newest English Language and Sheltered English Immersion Department. She is an alumna of New Mission high school and grew up in Dorchester. This is her fifth year as an educator in Boston Public Schools.

After graduating from New Mission in 2013, she was a recipient of Boston University’s Thomas M. Menino Scholarship where she obtained a Bachelor Science in Journalism and a Master of Education in Applied Human Development, specializing in positive youth development surrounding trauma, grief, and resilience. She first began her work in BPS five years ago as a college advisor in New Mission’s guidance department. While in graduate school, she joined Boston Teaching Fellowship where she began training in language acquisition and bilingual education. She transitioned to a K-8 setting working with Newcomers and Recently arrived immigrant students and, in 2020, returned to New Mission.

Taylor Robinson |English As A Second Language Department Chair | Language Assessment Team Facilitator | ESL English Teacher

Most of Ms. Robinson’s experience has been working with Spanish and Cape Verdean Creole speaking students, however, this year, she has the opportunity to work closely with more Haitian students as well. She is bilingual in Spanish. She takes an native-language approach to second language learning, in which students’ first language are leveraged as assets in the classroom through bilingual texts and cultural exploration. When she is not working in school, her hobbies include completing home decor DIY projects for her YouTube channel, practicing yoga, and hosting her podcast where she discusses several topics with her students, including their unique experiences as English language learners in Boston.

Ashley Compagna was born and raised in New Hampshire, but has resided in Boston for most of the last decade. She completed both her Bachelors and Masters degrees in Spanish Language and Literature at the University of New Hampshire, then went on to earn a Master's degree in Education from the University of Massachusetts Boston. She also studied Mexican literature at Universidad de las Americas in Puebla, Mexico. Ashley has always loved learning languages, and studied Spanish, Latin, Ancient Greek and Arabic during college.

Ashley discovered her passion for education through her involvement with ESL classes at the International Institute, an organization that serves the refugee communities in Massachusetts and New Hampshire. She has taught Spanish for four years, ESL for four years, and this is her Ashley Compagna | Sheltered fourth year teaching in BPS. In her free time, Ashley likes to travel, spend time with family and English Immersion & English friends, cook, and read. The last place she traveled was Costa Rica, and she hopes to travel to Language Teacher Scotland in the next year.

Throughout my formative years I spent my time between the Dominican Republic and New York City . At the age of 11 I moved permanently to Brockton where I attended middle school and high school. Throughout middle school and high school I participated in a newspaper club where I interviewed teachers and wrote articles or interest. I completed my undergraduate degree in Mathematics at UMass Boston and after a gap year transitioned to an accelerated master's program for secondary education.

As a student at UMass Boston I had the opportunity to spend 3 months in Colombia as recipient of a scholarship for Latin American students interested in research. During my free time I enjoy writing and have spent the past summers participating in PROMYS which is a program for gifted students in mathematics based in Boston University. In this program teachers and students work on demanding tasks and take advanced math courses. When I do not participate in PROMYS I Stephanie Valerio | Sheltered travel to Cape Verde or Dominican Republic where I enjoy my time with friends and family. I am English Immersion Math working to find a way to sew together my interests and passion for writing, working on math problems, and traveling despite how unrelated these may seem.

TEACHER SPOTLIGHTS: ENGLISH LANGUAGE DEPARTMENT Jenny Goodman grew up in Westford, Massachusetts. As a kid, she would print math worksheets and “teach” her younger brother. Although teaching was not always in the forefront of her mind while acting as an angsty teenager, it makes sense that this is where life’s path led her.

Jenny attended the University of Vermont and, while there, rediscovered her passion for education. She completed her student teaching at Burlington High School, splitting her time between a traditional history classroom and an ESL classroom to support multilingual learners with their English literacy skills. Although she did not know it going into the experience, the ESL classroom ended up feeling most like “home.”

After a year in Seattle, WA serving with City Year, Jenny taught English abroad in rural Thailand. She returned to Boston for family reasons and decided to get her masters degree in Teaching Speakers of Other Languages at Boston University. After completing the program, she began teaching in Boston Public Schools. This will be her fifth year teaching in the district and first at New Mission.

Jenny is passionate about giving multilingual students the education they deserve. She highlights using both English and student home languages to give them access to opportunities in high school and beyond.

Olivia Lynch is from Roslindale and is a proud BPS alum of the John D. O’Bryant High School. While attending OB she was introduced to the sport of rowing as a freshman and was the captain of the team for three years. Being a student-athlete helped ground her with her studies and also gave her a support network with the loss of her mother to non-hodgkin's lymphoma during her sophomore year.

While attending Northeastern University, Olivia pursued a degree in European history and religious studies. She also joined the women’s novice DI rowing team and was able to compete against the top schools in the nation.

After graduating, she wanted to give back to the rowing community which had given her so much. So Olivia worked for Community Rowing located in Brighton as a nonprofit program coordinator and a novice girl’s high school rowing coach. While tutoring the girls at practice was where she decided to switch careers and become a teacher.

Olivia decided to complete her master’s degree through the Boston Teacher Residency program because she is passionate about giving back to her community. She had positive experiences in all her BPS schools, which made her want to be able to provide the same environment for her students. Olivia taught in East Boston for over ten years and is so excited to start her next chapter of teaching as a New Mission Titan.

Twin Power

11th graders Lucy and Lucien (Junior) Jura talk to their ESL teacher Ms. Robinson to share a peek into their experiences as recently arrived students from Haiti, what it’s like being twins, and how learning English has helped them make friends.

Robinson: It’s not? Why?

Robinson: It’s really awesome. So I think it’s great.

And I think you do have superpowers. Every set of Junior: It’s not because people think you have a twins I know, there’s just like sixth sense, you twin, you’re sharing all your stuff, you’re playing with know what your twin is thinking or needing. I them. It’s not like that. wonder if it’s different if one is a girl and one is a boy. When Junior had his accident in his foot, all day I was, not sick, but something inside me didn’t feel Robinson: You both seem to get along really well right. And when I came to my car, I saw Junior and you look out for each other. Were you always sitting, crying because his foot hurt. like this when you were in Haiti or is it more so that you’re here and you’re in a new place?

On Moving to the U.S. During a Pandemic

Lucy: I didn’t always come to Junior because we Robinson: What were your first thoughts and were in different schools. In Haiti, there was a impressions? school for girls and a school for boys. There was a school for both but I was in a school for girls.

Junior: At first, I was afraid when I was in Haiti, but when I came to Boston, I saw that people Junior: The thing is, the fun stuff about being a twinwere nice. They were watching me like people is you can share stuff. You’re not alone. You have who came here to have a great life. It was nice to someone. When I first came here, it was going to be see that people don’t care where you’re from. It hard if I was alone, by myself. In a new school doesn't matter. That’s why I like Boston. speaking a new language, but I have my twin so it was easy. I didn’t need people at first because Lucy: Nervous because it’s always a big step to sometimes you see you are alone and that makes start again when you had your life in a place and you sad but I have my twin and it was fun. There’s you have to leave all that to live a better life I can some part in life that you need a twin. I’m not going say. But I was happy because it was a new to lie. Some parts of my life, I need my twin but beginning for me. It was time to change, to when I’m in my feelings, I’m alone. (laughs). experience a lot of things.

Robinson: So maybe twins do have those Robinson: What’s it like being twins? Do superpowers that they talk about? people in Haiti also make a big deal about being twins? I feel like here we make a big deal Lucy: I do think twins have superpowers. about it.

Robinson: What’s been the hardest part about the transition?

Robinson: Tell me more.

Lucy: In Haiti, too. There’s a story about twins in Haiti, they have superpowers or magic. It’s Lucy: Because in Haiti, when twins are born, they like in the culture. If you have twins, twins can give them some green plants to eat. In our culture, be sometimes evil, sometimes good. And if you if you give green plants to eat to twins, they’re not have twins, one is gonna be the good twin, and gonna have their superpowers anymore. So when one of them is gonna be the bad twin. we were born, they fed us a lot of green plants and I keep thinking if we hadn’t eaten those Robinson: Who’s the bad twin? Is it you, plants….maybe…

Junior? Are you the evil twin?

Robinson: All that you know.

Lucy: (laughs) I think it’s me.

Junior: (laughs) I’m a good guy.

Junior: People think it’s like happiness, [that] it’s fun being a twin, no it’s not.

Robinson: So there’s sort of like a legend or a myth. I love that. Well, I’ve always been fascinated by twins. I think it’s remarkable to be born - to come into the world with somebody.

Junior: Yeah. It's cool.

Lucy: It’s to leave all that I - how can I say...

Lucy: All that you construct piece by piece like your family, your friends, all of your world.

Junior: Making friends. That’s all. Because I knew it was going to be tough. A new language. New city. It was going to take time but I passed through it.

On Culture Shock Robinson: What has been the biggest culture shock? Junior, I know you talked about how making friends has been a big challenge for you.

You talked about just leaving everything behind.

Do you know what a culture shock is?

Robinson: You came pretty much at a wild, difficult time for anybody I think. Most of your Robinson: It’s when you go to a new culture and classmates hadn’t been in the building since they something about the culture is just so different were in 9th grade. There’s been a lot of changes. that it is just shocking and it can upset you or What is something that you’re proud of? scare you. It can be something as simple as the way people drive or the way people dress or the Junior: I’m proud of making an impact at school way people eat. What has been the biggest and [proud] of soccer too because at first I culture shock? thought I was going to be the invisible kid. You don’t see him but -- I’m far from invisible. A new Junior: The weather. It’s nasty in Boston. You can student who doesn't speak the language very have four seasons in one day. In the morning it’s well and who is from Haiti - that was tough for hot and in the evening it’s cold. The thing is, in me [to see] and that’s the biggest thing I Haiti, it’s always hot. That’s the biggest thing that accomplished this year so far. affects me in Boston.

Robinson: Is being an advocate. I’m sure that Lucy: The weather and the dogs. They treat dogs they appreciate you. like kings here.

Lucy: I can say I’m really proud of my work here Robinson: Yes! Isn't it crazy how well Americans because I thought that it was going to be like the treat their pets? high school movies like the new student, nobody wants to help you, you’re just left behind. But it’s Lucy: They have their own bed, clothes, they have not like that. You have a lot of people to help their own store. It was like wowwwww. In Haiti, it’s you. In my world history class, the kids are so not like that. Most Haitians are scared of dogs nice, they’re always helping you, pushing you because I think from our history from when they even when you don’t want to read, you say your were chasing us with dogs. I think it’s because of accent is too bad to read. They just keep on that. We don’t treat dogs like this in Haiti. In Haiti, pushing you and pushing you and say “you can, if you give him water or food you’re treating him you can, you can. You got this.” I think I’m proud like a king. But here, you treat them like a baby. of myself for letting people help me because it’s not easy to let somebody you don’t know help On Becoming Bilingual you.

Robinson: You had some ESL classes in Haiti before coming here. How did that help?

Robinson: What qualities does someone need in order to be a good ESL teacher?

Junior: If it wasn’t for Haiti, I wouldn’t talk right.

My language isn’t that good but it’s not that bad, too. At least I can talk. But there’s people who can’t talk and I feel bad for them. That's why I’m thankful that I learned it when I was in Haiti.

Lucy: Patience. You have to have patience.

Junior: Do it with your heart because to do what you are doing you have to love it first. You have to put your all in it because if you are not putting your all, the student will not learn.

Robinson: What’s the difference between ESL in Haiti and ESL with me?

Robinson: What is a saying or phrase that you can teach me right now?

Lucy: In Haiti, they’re not teaching English like in here. In Haiti, they are teaching the grammar, how Lucy: My mom used to always tell me that for to use e and g, -ed, things like that. They’re more Haitian kids you only have three things in your focusing on grammar than speaking it, you know? life: l’éligese, lakay ou, lekol. Church, your school, But here, it’s step by step. You can talk and you and your house. You don’t need anything else. can make some errors but step by step they’re not gonna laugh at you or [start] mocking you, Junior: Lé lavi a baw kou , e ou ki pou chwazi siw they’re gonna help you say it. Here you learn new vle leve. Which means, life will knock you down words. That’s cool here. but you have to know how to get back up.

ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT: LUIS MORALES Luis Morales Legislative Aide: to State Senator Brendan Crighton Master of Public Administration Candidate, UMass Boston McCormack Graduate School of Policy and Global Studies New Mission | Class of 2016

Bio: My name is Luis Morales, and I graduated from New Mission in 2016—go titans! I am a Puerto Rican, lifelong Boston resident, and a first-generation college graduate.

Thanks to the support of many teachers (such as Ms. Rahim, DeeDee), the best guidance counselor (Val-D), and the UAspire team, I was afforded the opportunity to attend and graduate from a 4-year liberal arts college debt-free. During my senior year at New Mission, I was awarded two major scholarships—the Posse Foundation Leadership scholarship and the Gates Millenium Full-Need Scholarship. To qualify for these scholarships, I remained involved with National Honor Society initiatives and got involved in the local community, spending two years as a Youth Activist at the Dudley Street Neighborhood Imitative. Furthermore, I dedicated many nights to writing 8, 1000-word essays and attending many rounds of interviews to earn these scholarships. In the end, all that hard work paid off as I went to college for free and joined a network of thousands of students who are all leaders I work with, learn from, and are great friends. 4 years later, after the Pandemic-related interruptions to college life, I graduated from Hamilton College with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Government.

Upon graduation, I became a Legislative Aide for the office of State Senator Brendan Crighton, where I manage constituent services and streamline the Senator’s Environmental Policy agenda among other policy areas. I am also pursuing a Master of Public Administration at Umass Boston. In the next few years, I will start an education non-profit that will connect inner-city youth with the many environmental and social justice organizations across Boston to equip them with the knowledge and resources necessary to spearhead initiatives in their own neighborhoods.

Benefits of Getting The COVID Vaccine *COVID-19 vaccines are effective at helping protect against severe disease and death, including from variants of the virus that causes COVID-19 currently circulating (e.g., Delta variant). *If you are fully vaccinated you can resume activities that you did before the pandemic. However, you should wear a mask indoors in public if you are in an area of substantial or high transmission. Being fully vaccinated and wearing a mask maximizes protection from the Delta variant and possibly spreading it to others. *You may have side effects after vaccination. These are normal and should go away within a few days. *Everyone aged 5 years and older is recommended to get vaccinated. What is asthma?

What is asthma?

Asthma is the most common chronic medical condition among children in the US. It is also the most common reason why children are absent from school. Asthma is a chronic condition that causes the airways in the lungs to narrow and swell, making it difficult to breathe. Everyday triggers in the environment, such as weather, dust, chemicals, smoke, and pet dander, create an even greater sensitivity for asthma.

Symptoms of asthma are caused by inflammation, which causes narrowing of small air passages in the lungs. Symptoms may include: wheezing cough difficulty breathing Chest tightness Asthma ranges from mild with occasional symptoms to severe with persistent symptoms that make daily life difficult. Even children with mild disease may have severe asthma episodes (exacerbations).chest tightness

What causes asthma?

The risk factors for developing asthma include: having a parent who has, or had, asthma atopic dermatitis (eczema) hay fever or other environmental allergies wheezing, apart from colds food allergies (such as to eggs, peanuts, or milk) Asthma ranges from mild with occasional symptoms to severe with persistent symptoms that make daily life difficult. Even children with mild disease may have severe asthma episodes (exacerbations).

If your child has asthma (mild, moderate or severe) please send in their inhaler with an Asthma Action Plan from your doctor as soon as possible. We like to be prepared and have one on hand if needed.

SUMMER AT NEW MISSION: STUDENT REFLECTION As a newly former Titan, I can say that my experience at New Mission High School greatly impacted me. I learned a lot not just education wise but lessons that will help in life especially working here this summer of 2021.

The teachers at this school helped me greatly with building skills that have made me feel prepared as I am an upcoming college student. At my time here I felt supported as a learner to depend on not only teachers but staff to help me through my journey as a high school student. I have achieved a lot during my time here and improved in skills I struggled with in middle school and in general such as presenting/public speaking. Working at New Alexia Richardson| Mission this summer was a great opportunity for me to take on as I gained New Mission PIC Student Employee a sense of responsibility getting to organize and make sure important paperwork was in the right place and filed. As I embark on my new journey as a college student at UMASS Boston as a psychology major on the premed track, I will be taking all that I have learned as a Titan along with me.
