FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Welcome to the 2022 New Mexico Games! It's been a crazy few years in our world and one thing we've all done is overcome the adversity we all faced! With the pandemic shutting things down in 2020, the uncertainty of what we could do loomed for quite some time. We wouldn't know when we could return to a sense of normalcy, but we've finally come to that point. The New Mexico Games is back to full strength with over 20 sports for all New Mexicans to participate in this year! The New Mexico Games has been around since 1989! Modeled after the Olympics, the New Mexico Games has had athletes compete as young as 3 and as old as 90. Even more impressive is the great number of participants coming from all around the state of New Mexico from the large cities, to the small towns and farms, all coming for the same reason, to participate and “Go for the Gold.” Each athlete that competes in the New Mexico Games supports the spirit of athletics which is such a rewarding feeling as well as inspiring to others. The New Mexico Games has been so important to the communities in New Mexico, bringing in over 2 million dollars a year on lodging, meals, and entertainment. Another great thing about competing in the New Mexico Games is qualifying for the State Games of America, which is held every two years. In 2022, the State Games of America will be held in Des Moines, Iowa from July 27-31, 2022. If you medaled in the 2021 New Mexico Games or in events leading up to the competition, you qualify. The first event to actually start the games is Ninja USA on April 23rd, 2022 with the other events to follow. A very thrilling part of the New Mexico Games this year is the return of our iconic Memorial Day Weekend Basketball Tournament! This is so exciting on many levels since we've haven't had our basketball tournament in 3 years. 2019 was the last time we did basketball, 2020 we went through a pandemic, and in 2021 the state of New Mexico Didn't open up until the later part of the year. Everyone that knows New Mexico Basketball knows the New Mexico Games tournament every year and WE ARE BACK! We would like to thank the City of Albuquerque, for their amazing partnership with the New Mexico Games! Thanks to all our sponsors and partners for your continued support of the Games each and every year! Thank you to our Board of Directors for their tireless efforts to make our events happen. MISSION STATEMENT WHAT ARE THE NEW MEXICO GAMES

The New Mexico Games is an annual multi-sport festival offering statewide amateur athletic competition in the Olympic tradition to New Mexicans of all ages. Patterned after the Olympic Games, the New Mexico Games will award gold, silver and bronze medals to the top three finishers in each team and individual sport. Sports will consist of Olympic sports, Pan American Sports, or other sports as long as there is 65% Olympic and Pan American, throughout the Games. Any one in the State of New Mexico can request a sport if they want to. The age divisions, weight categories, technical format, qualifications, and regulations, as well as the organization and production of the New Mexico Games are determined by New Mexico Games Inc. a non-profit New Mexico Corporation, in consonance with the governing policies establish by each sports commissioner, with help from the Games Board of Directors and others within that sport. The Games are recognized and encouraged by the United States Olympic Committee. Currently 37 states have organized State Games, although it could change yearly. The New Mexico Games are held in Albuquerque most years, but some sports have been held in other Cities per request of the commissioners. When held in Albuquerque, possible venues could be UNM, City of Albuquerque, and APS sites, as well as city businesses.

WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF THE GAMES? ⦁ Inspire New Mexicans of every age and skill level to develop these physical abilities. ⦁ Encourage all New Mexicans to participate in physical fitness activities. ⦁ Promote physical fitness and sports activities as a means of improving the health of each participant. ⦁ Motivate New Mexican athletes to participate in local, state, national and international competitions. ⦁ Foster an amateur sports network of participants, volunteers, and sports enthusiasts throughout NM. ⦁ Create private as well as public sector support for physical fitness and amateur athletics endeavors. ⦁ As stated in the Olympic creed: "The most important thing in the Olympic Games is not to win but to take part"

DID YOU KNOW? ⦁ The NM GAMES started in 1989, but were not held that year. ⦁ Mayor Schultz was responsible for starting the New Mexico Games, as he wanted to see how we could do with many sports competitions over a week or two in case we ever wanted to bid on some larger sports competitions for the future here in Albuquerque. ⦁ Mayor Schultz got many in the business community to take part in the Games by forming a Board of Directors; they in turn hired an Executive Director. ⦁ In 1990, the first year of competition, we had about 1000 athletes and held the Opening Ceremonies at the UNM Football Stadium. Our first Executive Director was Kim Killorin, who served one year. ⦁ In 199,1 our second year, our Executive Director was Dave Wilson. The Four Seasons Hotel was our host hotel and they allowed us to have a New Mexico Games Office in the Hotel. ⦁ In the 1990 we had many Presidents, such as our first, Bob Epstein, then Dan Salzwedel, next Roger Knight, after him Drew Hoffman, and finally Mark Pike. ⦁ From 2000 to 2010 we only had one President, and that was David Seely. ⦁ In 1992 Roger Knight, who had been around the Games since 1989, asked Fred Hultberg to "try it for a year" as Executive Director. Fred is now going on his 27th year as Executive Director. ⦁ The first few Games were done over one weekend. ⦁ We have honored our Male and Female Athletes of the Year since 1994. ⦁ We have had many sports in the Games since the 90's such as Armwrestling, Archery (indoor and outdoor), Billiards, Bocce, Bowling, Basebal,l Basketball (3 on 3, and 5 on 5), BMX Bike Racing, Cricket, Darts, Gymnastics, Hockey (ice and roller), Horseshoes, Judo, Karate, Kickball, Laser Tag, Mountain Biking, Pickleball, Run(3K, 5K, 10k), Racquetball, Soccer (3 aside and 11 aside), Shooting, Softball, Squash, Swimming, Tennis, Table Tennis, Track and Field, Volleyball(indoors and outdoors), Wallyball, Water Skiing, Weightlifting, and Wrestling. ⦁ Without our loyal Commissioners and other volunteers the Games could not go on. ⦁ Lighting the Torch each year during Opening Ceremonies is the traditional way of kicking off the Games each year. ⦁ In Basketball from 1990 until 1995 we only had 25 teams each year. Since that time we have increased our teams where historically we've maxed out at 235 teams. ⦁ The NM Games now have over 7,000 athletes that compete yearly and it is done over many weekends throughout the spring, summer, and fall. ⦁ There has been a National Competition for the State Games since 1999, held every two years: In its first year, it was in St. Louis, MO; St Louis again in 2001; 2003 it was in Hartford, Conn.; 2005 in Colorado Springs, CO; 2007 again in Colo. Springs; 2009 again in Colo. Springs; 2011 in San Diego, CA; 2013 in Hershey/Harrisburg, PA; 2015 in Lincoln, Nebraska; 2017 in Grand Rapids, Michigan; 2019 in Lynchburg, Virginia; and 2022 will be held in Des Moines, Iowa. ⦁ Our basketball tournament was on a 3 year hiatus from 2020-2022 due to the coronavirus pandemic.

ONLINE REGISTRATION

THE NM GAMES IS OFFERING ONLINE REGISTRATION. Teams can register at newmexicogames.org/basketball. We are asking that all teams register online. We do however realize that this may not be possible for everyone. We will take mail or hand delivered entries. All mailed and hand delivered entries must be cash, money order or cashier's check. No personal or business checks accepted. Individual players will still need to turn in a signed waiver at check in. Coaches will still have the chance to change their roster at check-in. Regular registration will be through Friday, May 2, 2022. Regular registration fee is $250.00. Senior early registration will be $150.00. After May 2nd, late fees will apply. Team registration will be $275.00 and senior team fee will be $175.00. Teams MUST wear similar color jerseys with permanent numbers. No taped numbers. We ask that numbers be at least 4 inches tall. This applies to all teams in all divisions. Please be sure to read the rules that will be with your packet. You are responsible for informing your players and parents the rules. In the past we have always allowed teams to have the option to play Friday night or not. Too many teams have opted not to play Friday, which has made scheduling very difficult. Teams that are 60 miles or more out of Albuquerque will be able to check that box. If you are an out of town team and do not check that box, then you may be scheduled to play. Once the schedule is made, it is too late to change. It is your responsibility to make sure the box has been checked. Albuquerque and surrounding area teams can expect to play on Friday. Not every team will play as we have only so many games that can be played that night, but you need to be ready to play if necessary. There are a few Albuquerque schools that have graduation on that night; let us know if you are one of those schools and we will work around that. Mandatory check-in will begin Thursday, May 26th after 10:00 am through Thursday, May 26th at 6:00 pm. You will need to ensure roster and waivers are completed at this time. After you have turned in these items, you will receive an unofficial copy of your bracket, t-shirts, rules, and player passes. Teams that can't play Friday, can pick up your packet etc. at the gym you play your first game. Gyms open at 4:30 pm Friday. Each team will receive 10 player passes and 2 coach's passes. If you have more than 10 players, we will check your official roster and give you any additional passes at that time. You will only receive 2 coach’s passes regardless of how many coaches you have. Please remind your players that they must keep these with them at all times during the weekend; they will need them to get in. Each team is allowed up to 12 tshirts. You may only get shirts for players on the official roster. If you have more than 12 players on a team, additional shirts for them may be purchased at the time you check in for $5.00 each.

Beginner girls may choose to race in the Novice Boys class or in the Girls class. A Girl racer that has won 8 first place trophies in the Boys Novice class must race in the Girls class. All racers must wear a helmet, long sleeve shirt, long pants & tennis shoes. Loaner helmets are available at the track. Bicycles must have kickstands, chain guards and reflectors (that stick out) removed. All NM riders statewide are eligible to compete in these competitions.
