BASF launches two new collagen actives
BASF Care Creations has introduced two new cosmetic actives, NeoHelix™ Regenerate and SkinNexus™ Collag3n, marking a significant advance in collagen science for skincare formulation.
NeoHelix™ Regenerate is a precision biomedical-inspired peptide developed in partnership with 3Helix, drawing on collagenhybridising peptide (CHP) technology.
The active is designed to target damaged collagen areas, supporting skin’s natural selfrepair mechanisms and adaptive collagen renewal. In vivo data from a study of female subjects aged 60 to 70 showed a 41% reduction in damaged collagen and a 65% increase in endogenous hyaluronic acid levels after 56 days, outperforming a comparative peptide benchmark across all measured parameters.
SkinNexus™ Collag3n, developed with biotech partner Bota Biosciences, is a recombinant, bio-identical Collagen III fragment produced via vegan yeast fermentation. Designed for full-spectrum collagen homeostasis, it targets skin tonicity, sagging and fine lines. In a 3D dermis model, the active delivered increases of 48% in Collagen I, 82% in Collagen III and 71% in Collagen V. Clinical studies on women aged 53 to 70 showed measurable improvements after just four weeks, outperforming a market benchmark at 10 times higher concentration.
ACRI: One man’s vision for a borderless African cosmetic industry
For nearly two decades, Percy Sibanda has worked at the intersection of cosmetic science, law and regulatory policy across Africa. A cosmetic chemist with almost 20 years of industry, institutional and legal experience, his career has been shaped by contributions to technical committees, working groups and regulatory taskforces that influence the direction of the continent’s cosmetics industry.
Working across SMEs, multinational corporations and alongside government regulators, Sibanda repeatedly observed a common challenge: many cosmetic companies view Africa as a single market opportunity, only to encounter a complex, fragmented regulatory landscape. Commercial success, he found, depends not just on knowing the rules, but also on understanding how they operate across multiple jurisdictions.
That recurring challenge became the catalyst for establishing African Cosmetic Regulatory Intelligence (ACRI) – a specialist regulatory and public affairs consultancy helping cosmetic and personal care businesses navigate Africa’s evolving regulatory environment. ACRI was founded on a powerful idea: regulatory intelligence should not merely be a compliance exercise, but rather a strategic tool that supports innovation, reduces operational risk and enables business growth.
With qualifications spanning applied chemistry, cosmetic science and law, Sibanda brings an uncommon blend of disciplines to his work. ACRI today provides specialist support across market-entry strategy, claims substantiation, advertising compliance, regulatory intelligence, crisis management, sustainability frameworks and regulatory risk management.
Beyond advisory services, ACRI is driven by a broader continental vision.
Sibanda sees Africa’s cosmetics sector evolving into a harmonised market –where regulatory convergence reduces duplication, lowers trade barriers and enables businesses to grow across borders more efficiently. For ACRI, this means helping build the regulatory foundations of a truly integrated African cosmetics economy, and positioning businesses to thrive in a market valued at $73 billion.

THE MEISTER PERFUMERS
A FRAGRANCE
PARTNER FOR BRANDS THAT STAND OUT
The emotional evolution of niche perfumery
Scent has always been personal, but at Paris Perfume Week 2026, the evolution of scent was clear. Throughout the trade show, a convergence of storytelling, art, ritual and emotion was evident, quietly redefining the essence of modern perfumery.
At Paris Perfume Week 2026, fragrance felt like far more than scent alone. Across the fair, perfume became a meeting point between smell, storytelling, design, ritual and emotion. Throughout the event, Düllberg Konzentra observed a growing trend towards soft skinlike compositions, collectable packaging and deeply narrative-driven brands.
The industry is entering a new chapter where identity matters more than intensity and meaning becomes just as important as composition itself.
SOFTNESS TAKES OVER
One of the strongest shifts visible throughout the event was the increasing shift toward intimacy in scent. Fragrances are now being designed to sit closer to the skin, diffusing softly rather than projecting loudly. Creamy sandalwoods, airy musks, powdery textures, dry woods, warm amber nuances and tactile finishes dominated the olfactive landscape. Texture itself has become the new signature.
This evolution is especially visible in brands such as Élixir Privé, where compositions explore softness and texture with sophistication. Mango White stands out for its transition from tropical brightness into
creamy rice accords layered with coconut woods and musk, creating a fragrance that feels comforting, elegant and quietly modern.
Meanwhile, Amouage demonstrates how gourmand perfumery continues to evolve beyond sweetness. Rum, cocoa, heliotrope, vanilla and spice are handled with restraint, proving edible-inspired scent profiles can remain rich without becoming overwhelming.
STORIES IN SCENT
If scent defined the atmosphere of Paris Perfume Week, storytelling defined its soul. Many brands were not simply presenting perfumes but also building emotional universes around them. Every bottle, note, visual element and design detail became part of a larger narrative intended to create emotional connection.
Among the most compelling examples is Map of the Heart. Presented in a sculptural heart-shaped flacon, this packaging communicates far more than visual identity. The brand's philosophy positions the heart as a map of human experience where desire, vulnerability, love and pain intersect, transforming fragrance into something deeply symbolic and personal.
Similarly, Free Yourself approaches fragrance through emotional well-being and mindfulness, reflecting how perfume increasingly intersects with self-connection and personal ritual.
Chinese fragrance brands, including Zhufu, Voice From The Sky and Bu Feng, brought a rich narrative perspective to Paris Perfume Week, introducing compositions rooted in literature, philosophy, memory and regional ingredients.
PACKAGING AS ART
Packaging emerged as one of the defining conversations at the event. During the trade show, presentation no longer felt secondary to fragrance itself. Instead, it became part of the creative core.
Parfumerie Particulière transforms packaging into a collectable artwork by collaborating with a tattoo artist. Mabelle O'Rama stands out for its lunar dust presentation, while Une Nuit Nomade impresses with discovery-set packaging and artist-created bottle illustrations visible through the juice.
Innovation extended beyond bottles into illustrated blotters, tactile packaging, renewable travel formats and immersive scent experiences.
L'Orchestre Parfum presented one of the most memorable concepts, inviting visitors to wear headphones while discovering fragrances, so that music and scent could interact simultaneously.
PERFUME BEYOND SMELL
Fragrances are now being designed to sit closer to the skin, diffusing softly rather than projecting loudly
Concept-driven perfumery is also emerging through brands such as Tombstone Fragrances, which explores the phases of human life through dark accords, leather, mineral textures and dusty woods. Meanwhile, Les Destinations translates geographical locations into atmospheric experiences, avoiding clichés when capturing Oman through incense, dry woods, warm air and spatial elegance rather than relying heavily on oud.
What ultimately stood out most in Paris was not one singular olfactive trend, but a movement toward emotional depth and clarity of identity. Houses such as Hiram Green and Pigmentarium continue to push fragrance into the realms of art, culture and sensory storytelling.
Perfume today is no longer only about smelling exceptional. It is about feeling something exceptional. •

Sophorolipids: The biosurfactants redefining men’s care
From shaving irritation to scalp health, the male grooming market is demanding smarter, science-backed solutions.
Men generally have oily skin that tends to shine and is prone to acne. Their scalps also produce excessive sebum, which may trigger seborrheic dermatitis or folliculitis, leading to dandruff and hair loss.
To care for male skin effectively, it is essential to follow a proper skincare routine with gentle cleansers and moisturisers that protect skin’s hydrolipidic barrier. While many men avoid complicated skincare routines, a simple yet effective regimen can greatly improve the condition and appearance of men’s skin.
MEN’S SKINCARE AND SOPHOROLIPIDS
Sophorolipids are glycolipid biosurfactants produced by non-pathogenic yeasts and represent a sustainable, biocompatible alternative to synthetic surfactants. SpecBio® SL (INCI: Glycolipids) contains a high lactone form percentage with various benefits, including antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, sebum control, improving acne skin, soothing and repairing skin barrier, maintaining skin and scalp’s natural beauty, and rejuvenating hair beauty.
Sophorolipids are developed from renewable resources through fermentation. They are green, safe, mild, biodegradable and environmentally friendly with a good comprehensive care effect for men’s care.
SEBUM CONTROL AND INFLAMMATION
Excessive secretion of sebum can cause skin inflammation and the proliferation of microorganisms. It can even lead to some skin diseases such as acne, itchy scalp, seborrheic dermatitis and hair loss.
A simple yet effective regimen can greatly improve the condition and appearance of men’s skin

Using the human immortalised sebaceous gland cell (SZ95) model, the neutral lipids secreted by SZ95 cells were quantified by Nile red staining. Results showed the inhibition rate of SpecBio® SL on lipid synthesis in SZ95 cells can reach 20%.
Inflammation of the skin can change and impair the protective barrier. Previous studies have shown that glycolipids inhibit the NF- κB signalling pathway with anti-inflammatory activity. SpecBio® SL has an inhibitory effect on the release of IL-6 and NO in RAW264.7 cells induced by LPS, when the concentration is 0.002%, the inhibitory rate is 39.5% and 42.6% respectively.
SENSITIVITY AND SOOTHING BENEFIT
Hyaluronidase is a hyaluronic acid-specific lyase. Its excessive activity can lead to the degradation of hyaluronic acid, which results in skin ageing and inflammation. A hyaluronidase inhibition experiment is the most typical method to evaluate the anti-sensitivity activity in vitro, and it assesses substances based on the inhibition rate of hyaluronidase. When the inhibition rate of hyaluronidase is higher, the anti-allergic activity is stronger. With a concentration of 15mg/mL, the inhibition rate was 45.8%, indicating SpecBio® SL has a certain anti-sensitivity effect.
Transient receptor potential vanilloid 1 (TRPV1) is a non-selective channel gated

by noxious heat, vanilloids and extracellular protons. TRPV1 acts as an important signal integrator in sensory nociceptors under physiological and pathological conditions including inflammation and neuropathy. When the concentration of SpecBio® SL is 25μg/mL, the inhibition rate of calcium ion concentration reaches 45.3%.
SKIN AND SCALP HEALTH
After 28 days of using products formulated with SpecBio® SL (control group) and SpecBio® SL (experimental group), results showed that SpecBio® SL (5%) effectively inhibits sebum secretion and Propionobacillus acnes while imparting a soothing and repairing effect.
After 28 days, compared with blank serum, 1% SpecBio® SL Scalp Care Serum can improve scalp redness, hair density and hair diameter. The results show that SpecBio® SL has a certain soothing effect, repairing the scalp barrier, reducing dandruff and nourishing the hair strands. Sophorolipids are available locally from Brenntag South Africa Beauty & Care. Contact the team for more information. •

The bespoke manufacturer giving South African brands a competitive edge
Cape Town-based Accolade Labs has spent nearly a decade proving that personalised, qualitydriven contract manufacturing can be a powerful competitive advantage for brands of every size. What started as a formulation-focused start-up has now become a full-service manufacturing partner.
By Abby Vorster

In a market where product differentiation is everything, the manufacturer behind the brand matters more than most consumers realise. For a growing number of South African cosmetic and personal care brands, this manufacturer is Accolade Labs. The bespoke contract manufacturer is based in Cape Town and has quietly become one of the country’s most trusted formulation and production partners since its founding in 2016.
The business was born out of a clear market need: to give brands, from ambitious startups to established players, access to expert formulation and manufacturing capability without the enormous capital outlay of building their own facility.
‘Accolade’ was not a name chosen lightly. It reflects the company’s foundational commitment to excellence, trust and helping clients build credible, successful brands. Nearly a decade on, those values remain the cornerstone of everything the laboratory does.
Known for quality, innovation and personalised partnerships, Accolade Labs has grown from a formulation-focused start-up into a recognised full-service
contract manufacturer, and the business shows no signs of slowing down.
QUALITY BUILT INTO EVERY STEP
The depth and breadth of Accolade Labs’ end-to-end service offering is what truly sets the business apart from its competitors. Rather than simply filling a brief, the team walks clients through every stage of the product journey:
• custom formulation
• sampling, testing and refinement
• manufacturing and filling
• sourcing packaging
• labelling and compliance support
• distribution readiness.
The process is collaborative, one that treats each client’s brand vision with the same consistency and care as a bespoke tailor would approach a made-to-measure commission. For emerging brands in particular, this hands-on approach can mean the difference between a product that lands well and one that never quite gets off the ground.
Underpinning this service is an unwavering commitment to quality. Accolade Labs operates in full accordance with ISO 22716
Cosmetics Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) – the internationally recognised benchmark for cosmetic manufacturing quality. Quality assurance is not a final checkpoint at Accolade Labs; it is embedded throughout the entire process, from raw material sourcing and formulation testing through to production, inspection and documentation. For clients navigating the complexities of SAHPRA requirements and local regulatory compliance, this approach significantly reduces risk and accelerates the path to market, be it local or international.
The Cape Town location is another strategic asset the company leverages to the benefit of its clients. The Western Cape region offers access to a deep pool of skilled scientific and technical talent, a welldeveloped logistics infrastructure, proximity to major ports and strong relationships with local raw materials and packaging suppliers. The result is a leaner, more responsive supply chain that translates into improved turnaround times and more competitive pricing for clients across South Africa and beyond its borders.
EMPOWERING BRANDS TO COMPETE WITH CONFIDENCE
On the innovation front, the company continues to invest actively in R&D and formulation development, with a sharp focus on high-performance skincare, hair care and body care. Advanced ingredient technologies, trend-driven product categories and expanding manufacturing

Plant-based protection for urban men
From beard oils and scalp serums to multifunctional moisturisers and pollution-protective skincare, modern grooming products are expected to provide high performance while supporting healthier skin and hair.
Men’s grooming has evolved far beyond basic cleansing and shaving. Today’s male consumer is informed, ingredient-conscious and invested in self-care routines that deliver in terms of efficacy and convenience.
One of the major shifts shaping the category is the growing awareness of environmental stressors and their impact on men’s skin and scalp health. Urban pollution, UV exposure, blue light, dust and oxidative stress are now recognised contributors to premature ageing, dryness, irritation and weakened skin barrier function. As a result, demand is growing for formulations that not only groom but also actively protect. This has created an exciting opportunity for ingredient technologies that combine natural positioning with scientifically proven performance. One ingredient answering this demand is MorinGuard ®
Derived from moringa seed extract, MorinGuard ® is a multifunctional active ingredient designed to protect skin and hair from environmental pollutants while improving overall appearance. Moringa has long been valued for its nutrient-rich profile and antioxidant properties, making it highly relevant for modern grooming formulations focused on resilience and wellness.

Figure 1: MorinGuard® mode of action I – dual action for skin recovery and protection. MorinGuard® soothes inflammation and provides skin protection and recovery. Moringin, the active compound in MorinGuard® inhibits the inflammatory NF- κB pathway, while activating the antioxidative NRF2 pathway. Based on this dual action, MorinGuard® has been proven to reduce the levels of inflammatory markers, metalloproteinases (MMPs) and nitric oxide (NO), ultimately leading to enhanced skin recovery and protection upon irritation.
IDEAL FOR URBAN-FOCUSED GROOMING CONCEPTS
MorinGuard ® aligns well with current grooming trends by helping protect skin and hair against particulate pollution. It also supports a clean and fresh sensory profile. Its naturally derived positioning appeals to the growing demand for plant-based and sustainable solutions. Building reliability into solid oral dosage forms
In an environment shaped by advanced manufacturing technologies, tighter regulatory oversight and growing complexity, reliable supply partnerships are no longer optional. They are foundational.
Despite rapid innovation in biologics, advanced therapies and novel delivery platforms, the backbone of global pharmaceutical manufacturing remains unchanged: solid oral dosage forms. Tablets and capsules continue to dominate prescription and OTC medicines thanks to their stability, dosing accuracy, portability and cost efficiency. Yet, while the dosage forms may be familiar, the science, technology and supply chains behind them are evolving at pace.
Today’s manufacturers face increasing complexity, from advanced tabletting controls and flexible encapsulation technologies to heightened regulatory scrutiny of excipients. Overcoming these challenges requires technical excellence and strong, reliable partnerships across the pharmaceutical supply chain.
PRECISION, DATA AND PROCESS CONTROL
At its core, tabletting is a compression process, transforming a powder blend into a robust and consistent dosage form. While the fundamentals remain unchanged, modern rotary tablet presses now produce up to 1.5 million tablets per hour. Real-time monitoring of compression and ejection forces feeds directly into Process Analytical Technology (PAT) systems, enabling proactive process adjustments rather than reliance on end-of-batch testing.
Upstream processing remains critical. Wet granulation continues to be widely used to improve flow and compressibility but introduces water and heat – factors that can pose risks for moisture-sensitive APIs. Dry granulation via roller compaction removes water from the equation, making it attractive for hygroscopic formulations. Direct compression is also gaining momentum, supported by co-processed excipients that provide optimised flow and compressibility without a separate granulation step.
Increasingly, manufacturers are embracing continuous manufacturing, linking blending, granulation and compression into a single, uninterrupted process. The result is reduced scale-up risk, tighter quality control and smaller production footprints.
FLEXIBILITY IN FORMULATION
Capsules offer a versatility that tablets cannot always match. Hard capsules –historically gelatine-based – are now manufactured from hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) to support vegetarian requirements and moisturesensitive formulations.
Capsules can accommodate powders, pellets, granules, mini-tablets and even liquids or semi-solids, making them ideally suited for modified-release systems and combination products.
Modern capsule fillers achieve throughput exceeding 200 000 capsules per hour, with dosing accuracy comparable to tabletting lines. Advances in dosator and tamping-pin technologies enable consistent fill weights, even for low-dose or high-potency APIs.

Capsules offer a versatility that tablets cannot always match
This flexibility makes encapsulation particularly valuable during early clinical phases, where speed and adaptability are critical.
CONSISTENCY WHERE IT MATTERS
Among the most critical excipients in tabletting and encapsulation is magnesium stearate. As a lubricant used in small concentrations, its physical properties can have an immense impact on manufacturability and product performance.
Peter Greven’s LIGAMED ®
Pharma-Grade Magnesium Stearate is manufactured using a controlled precipitation process specifically designed to deliver reproducible pharmaceutical performance. Carefully defined specific surface area, crystal morphology and fatty acid composition ensure batch-to-batch consistency, which is an essential requirement for robust processes and successful regulatory submissions.
LIGAMED ® grades comply with USPNF, Ph. Eur., ChP and JP monographs, with comprehensive certificates of analysis covering fatty acid profile, particle size distribution, specific surface area and heavy-metal content. For formulators seeking to standardise lubrication across multiple platforms, LIGAMED ® provides the confidence that critical process parameters and finished product quality remain firmly under control.
SUPPLY CHAIN TRANSPARENCY
BECOMES ESSENTIAL
The increased regulatory focus on nitrosamine impurities has added another layer of complexity to oral solid dosage manufacturing. Since the identification of NDMA in valsartan in 2018, regulatory agencies including the FDA and EMA now require formal nitrosamine risk assessments across drug products.
Research has demonstrated that trace nitrite levels in excipients – particularly common fillers such as microcrystalline cellulose and lactose – can contribute to nitrosamine formation in susceptible APIs. While magnesium stearate’s contribution is typically low due to its limited use level, understanding and controlling excipient quality has become essential.

The long-standing collaboration between Peter Greven and Brenntag exemplifies how aligned partners can deliver consistent value to manufacturers
In response, suppliers are offering low-nitrite excipient grades, supported by batch-specific data. This shift reinforces the importance of transparent, well-documented supply chains and close collaboration between manufacturers, distributors and excipient producers.
A STRONG PARTNERSHIP IN PRACTICE

TBeauty online: What's driving the next wave of e-commerce
P&C Review speaks to Karla Levick, chief marketing officer at Takealot, to get her perspective on where the local beauty e-commerce landscape is heading –and what it means for brands, both emerging and established.
he South African beauty industry is undergoing a quiet but significant digital transformation. As consumers grow more informed and more demanding of personalised experiences, Takealot is rapidly becoming the definitive space where beauty brands are built, tested and scaled.
LOWERING BARRIERS FOR BEAUTY STARTUPS
One of the most compelling shifts in the local beauty market is the democratisation of retail access. In the past, getting a beauty product onto shelves required significant upfront investment, established distributor relationships and, often, a great deal of luck. Today, platforms like Takealot are rewriting those rules.
“Our marketplace model lets emerging beauty brands reach a national customer base without physical shelf-space barriers or large upfront listing commitments. Brands can test, learn and optimise in near real time – launch targeted ranges, monitor customer response, gather reviews and refine their offerings,” says Levick.
For small beauty businesses and independent formulators, this is a game changer. The ability to launch small batches, monitor actual consumer behaviour and iterate accordingly is the kind of agility that simply wasn't possible through traditional
Levick highlights resultsdriven skincare, hair care and wellness-led beauty as strong growth areas
retail channels. Add to this Takealot's fulfilment infrastructure, discoverability tools – including search, promotions and category merchandising – plus the credibility of a trusted shopping environment, and the platform becomes a genuinely powerful launchpad for startups looking to build awareness and establish themselves in a competitive market.
TRENDS RESHAPING BEAUTY E-COMMERCE
Three interconnected shifts are defining trends in the South African online beauty market.
The first is a more informed, intentional consumer. South African beauty shoppers are no longer browsing passively. They are researching, comparing and seeking out products that speak directly to their specific needs. This has profound implications for how brands communicate – generic messaging is losing its power, while targeted, education-led content is gaining traction.
The second trend is the primacy of convenience.
“Conveni ence is a major driver,” notes Levick. “Consumers want trusted brands, broad choice, competitive pricing and fast delivery in a seamless experience.”
In a market where consumers are timepressed and increasingly comfortable transacting online, the brands and platforms that reduce friction will win.
The third – and perhaps most interesting for the local industry – is the rise of local and niche beauty brands. South African consumers are increasingly gravitating towards brands that offer authenticity, cultural relevance and innovation. This growing support for homegrown beauty is being amplified by Takealot, which gives smaller, independent labels the national reach they need to compete.

WHERE THE OPPORTUNITY LIES
Looking ahead, Levick sees the convergence of skincare, wellness and technology as the most significant growth frontier for beauty e-commerce.
“The biggest opportunity is for skincentric, multifunctional products that combine skincare benefits with cosmetic results – meeting demand for simpler, personalised routines with visible outcomes,” she explains.
This skin-first philosophy is reshaping product development across the industry, and the e-commerce environment is the perfect testing ground for it. Consumers can discover niche, results-driven products that might never find shelf space in a traditional retailer, and brands can gather real-time feedback to refine their positioning and formulations.
In terms of specific categories, Levick highlights results-driven skincare, hair care and wellness-led beauty as strong growth areas. She also identifies two categories that remain notably underrepresented online: advanced, targeted skincare treatments for specific skin concerns, and professional or salon-grade hair care ranges.
WHAT THIS MEANS FOR INDUSTRY
For manufacturers, cosmetic chemists and brand owners operating in the South African market, the message from Takealot's leadership is both encouraging and clear: the digital shelf is open, and the barriers to entry have never been lower.
The brands that will thrive are those that embrace a test-and-learn approach, invest in consumer education and develop products that speak to the growing demand for personalisation, efficacy and wellness alignment. •

Digital beauty accelerates in 2026
Nearly 40% of global skincare sales are expected to take place online by 2030, as digital-first strategies and AI-driven discovery reshape beauty buying behaviour, according to market intelligence company Euromonitor International.
Insights shared during the Euromonitor Live: First Look web event show how technology is transforming discovery and decision-making across the beauty path to purchase.
“As beauty shifts towards digital-first models, brands with clear problemsolution propositions and credible evidence are more likely to be recognised and recommended by AI-driven systems –digital determines visibility, shaping which brands are discovered and selected,” says Irina Barbalova, global lead for beauty and wellness at Euromonitor International.
SKINCARE POWERS
E-COMMERCE SURGE
Ingredient transparency, lower purchase risk and high search intent are driving digital disruption in skincare. E-commerce penetration reached 37% of global skincare sales in 2024 and is projected to rise to 40% by 2030 – the highest across all beauty categories. China leads the way, with online channels capturing 54% of skincare sales ($21.2 billion), followed by the US at $17.1 billion, supported by marketplace maturity and social commerce growth.
Digital momentum is also reshaping fragrance, which is traditionally an in-store category. In the US, 52% of fragrance purchases are already made online, projected to reach 63% by 2030.

Targeted collagen renewal for the neck and décolleté, powered by upcycled innovation
Skinification has moved beyond the face. This high-performance active combines sustainability with advanced biological targeting, supporting collagen architecture and improving visible signs of ageing. Backed by clinical and ex vivo data, it delivers smoother, firmer, more resilient skin—while redefining what responsible beauty looks like.

Ecoffea Citrus MB and the future of sustainable body care
How upcycled coffee and lemon extracts are redefining skin longevity in the neck and decollete.
Consumer demand is reshaping the cosmetics industry. They are no longer satisfied with products that simply mask the signs of ageing – they want formulations that work at a biological level, respect the planet and deliver measurable results.
At the intersection of these demands sits a new generation of active ingredients: upcycled, science-backed and designed for skin’s longevity. Ecoffea Citrus MB, developed by Chemyunion, is a compelling example.
SKINIFICATION OF BODY CARE
The concept of ‘skinification’, extending the rigorous and ingredient-led approach of facial care to the rest of the body, has advanced from being a trend to mainstream imperative. Today’s consumers are applying serums, active concentrates and collagen-boosting treatments to areas once largely ignored, with the neck and decollete emerging as priority zones.
Ageing in the neck and decollete follows a similar biological pathway to facial ageing: declining collagen and elastin production, increased skin laxity and deteriorating texture. What makes this area particularly challenging is the rate of collagen loss. Type III collagen, which supports the production and thickness of type I collagen, reduces at three times the rate of its counterpart. The result is accelerated sagging and wrinkling that many consumers find distressing, but few products adequately address.
LONGEVITY AT A MOLECULAR LEVEL
Ecoffea Citrus MB is designed with a precise biological target in mind, being the structural proteins that determine skin architecture. The active combines upcycled green coffee (Coffea arabica ) seed extract with lemon (Citrus limon ) fruit extract, sourced entirely from agricultural by-products to create a multi-functional booster for the extracellular matrix (ECM).
In ex vivo testing on skin samples from volunteers aged 45 to 60, a formula containing just 0.5% of the active was applied for 72 hours.
The immunofluorescence results were striking:
• type I collagen increased by 103%
• type III collagen by 106%
• type IV collagen by 79%.

Type
Fibronectin 1, a glycoprotein critical for maintaining the structural junction between the dermis and epidermis and a recognised marker of skin ageing, increased by 49%. These improvements represent a meaningful improvement in the biological scaffolding that keeps skin firm, resilient and youthful in appearance. Beyond structural proteins, Ecoffea Citrus MB demonstrated a 33% increase in sirtuin-3 (SIRT-3), an enzyme that regulates mitochondrial function and protects skin cells from oxidative damage. SIRT-3 holds a unique distinction – it is the only sirtuins scientifically proven to influence longevity in humans. By supporting SIRT-3 expression, the active contributes to reducing the appearance of ageing skin while supporting cellular health. This distinction aligns perfectly with the industry’s pivot toward skin longevity over short-term correction.
CLINICAL PROOF OF VISIBLE CHANGE
While ex vivo data is compelling, consumer trust is built on real-world results. A randomised clinical trial with 22 volunteers per group of women aged 44 to 69 with moderate to very deep neck and decollete wrinkles, evaluated the performance of a formula containing 0.5% Ecoffea Citrus MB over 28 days, using the AEVA-HE V4 high-resolution 3D imaging system to quantify changes with precision.

The results confirmed the ex vivo findings in vivo . Wrinkle area decreased by 15%, wrinkle perimeter by 12.8% and wrinkle volume by 13.5%, all statistically significant and superior to placebo.
Skin roughness also improved, with a 7% reduction in both SQ (standard deviation of point height) and STM (average peakto-peak amplitude) parameters – the latter being particularly significant as a correlate of perceived skin smoothness. The subjective data reinforced the instrumental findings: 90.9% of volunteers reported improved skin elasticity in the decollete, 86.4% saw fewer wrinkles and expression lines, and 86.4% described younger-looking skin in the neck area.
DID YOU KNOW?
Ecoffea Citrus MB is verified by Ecocert under the COSMOS standard, providing independent certification of its natural and sustainable credentials. This is an increasingly important qualification for brands navigating consumer scepticism around greenwashing claims.
UPCYCLING AS COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGE
The sustainability story of Ecoffea Citrus MB is carefully engineered, much like its biology. Both raw materials are sourced from waste streams of the the Brazilian agri-food industry. Green coffee is the by-product of cold pressing the residual seed cake for oil extraction while the lemon comes from the dried pomace of juice production. Brazil is the world’s leading coffee producer and ranks among the top global producers of citrus fruits, generating enormous volumes of these by-products annually.
Rather than treating this waste as an environmental liability, Chemyunion’s upcycling platform transforms it into high-value cosmetic actives. The circular economy approach reduces raw material demand, minimises agricultural waste and delivers ingredients with demonstrably high concentrations of bioactive compounds. The coffee cake retains phenolic compounds including chlorogenic and caffeic acids with potent antioxidant properties. Lemon pomace is rich in flavonoids and phenolic acids, which support collagen production and skin texture. Far from being a compromise, using these by-product streams concentrates the biological activity that makes the ingredient effective.
The sustainability story of Ecoffea Citrus MB is carefully engineered, much like its biology
FORMULATION SIMPLICITY WITH MAXIMUM IMPACT
Ecoffea Citrus MB is effective at a recommended dose of just 0.5%, making it economically viable across a wide range of price points. It also makes it compatible with industry’s current drive toward intelligent, lower-dose formulations that deliver high efficacy without overloading the skin barrier.
The active offers a meaningful point of differentiation. It speaks simultaneously to efficacy-focused consumers who research ingredients, sustainability conscious shoppers who scrutinise supply chains, and wellness-oriented buyers who want products that support their long-term skin health. Available in South Africa from IMCD, Ecoffea Citrus MB checks all the right boxes from sustainability to efficacy, and in doing so, points toward what responsible, effective and genuinely innovative body care can look like. •

Beyond the balm: Fragrance in lip care
As economic pressures reshape consumer spending habits, the so-called ‘lipstick effect’ is proving highly relevant. For personal care formulators, it presents a timely opportunity when coupled with fragrance, which is emerging as a key differentiator.
There is a well-worn economic theory that says when times get tough, people still buy lipstick. First coined by Estée Lauder chairman, Leonard Lauder during the 2001 recession, the ‘lipstick index’ describes a compelling consumer behaviour: as major discretionary spending contracts, demand for small, affordable luxuries holds firm or even grows. Forget the new car or overseas holiday – a luscious lip product offers a mood boost, a moment of self-care, and a touch of indulgence without breaking the bank.
In the context of South Africa’s current economic pressures, this theory is not merely academic. Consumers are actively seeking what trend forecasters are calling ‘little treat culture’ – the deliberate purchase of small pleasures that restore a sense of normalcy and joy.
A COLLECTION BUILT FOR THE MOMENT
This is the thinking behind Carvansons Luscious Lip Collection, a suite of six carefully crafted fragrances designed specifically for lip care applications. Developed with brands and formulators

in mind, the Luscious Lip Collection is positioned to help manufacturers elevate lipsticks, lip balms, lip glosses and treatment products into multi-sensory experiences that resonate emotionally with consumers.
What makes the collection technically noteworthy is that all six fragrances are confirmed flavour-safe, a critical consideration for any cosmetic applied to the lips. This removes a significant formulation hurdle and opens the door for confident application across both cosmetic and caring lip formats.
SIX FRAGRANCES, SIX SENSORY STORIES
The collection spans a range of olfactory profiles to suit diverse brand identities.
1. Very Cherry leads with a sweet cherry bloom, softened by a creamy almond heart and a warm vanilla dry-down, being both indulgent and timeless.
2. Dreamy Vanilla pairs tropical coconut with soft vanilla and a comforting creamy warmth, evoking pure, uncomplicated luxury.
3. For the gourmand trend that continues to dominate personal care, Chocolate Bliss opens with roasted cocoa and hazelnut, evolving through creamy milk chocolate and caramel to a smooth vanilla base.
4. On the fruitier end of the spectrum, Strawberry Kisses delivers sweet sugar, ripe strawberries and raspberry in a playful, irresistibly sweet profile with a warm buttery caramel finish.
5. Sweet Melon offers an aquatic-fruity contrast, with fresh watermelon and pear giving way to crisp succulent melon and a sweet sugary close.
6. Jelly Bean captures the vibrant spirit of a sparkling tropical-berry blend, with blackcurrant, raspberry and strawberry over a sweet vanilla base. It is fun, youthful and trend-forward.
The Luscious Lip Collection is positioned to help manufacturers elevate lipsticks, lip balms, lip glosses and treatment products
INNOVATIVE READY-TO-APPLY TOOLKIT
For brand owners, the collection presents a ready-to-apply toolkit for building differentiated lip care lines with strong sensory narratives. Each fragrance carries its own emotional cue –be it nostalgia, decadence, playfulness or calm – enabling brands to align product positioning with consumer mood states.
For formulators, the flavour-safe credentials streamline the development process, while the broad range of olfactory categories ensures flexibility across different product textures and price points.
As the lipstick index reminds us, consumers do not stop spending during difficult times – they simply spend mindfully. A lip product enhanced with the right fragrance offers a small, sensorial act of self-care. This is a powerful story for any brand to tell, and the Luscious Lip Collection gives formulators the ingredients to tell it well. •

Ingredient trends change direction
Beef tallow is trending. So is salmon DNA extract. Somewhere between these two trends lies the full complexity of what consumers currently want from their beauty and hair care ingredients. According to Spate, it is a more interesting picture than the usual ‘clean versus clinical’ framing suggests.
The 2026 Spate Ingredient Trends Report, which aggregates consumer behaviour signals across Google Search, TikTok and Instagram (US data, March 2025 to February 2026 vs March 2024 to February 2025), makes one thing clear: consumer ingredient demand is not moving in a single direction. It is branching, simultaneously towards the highly technical and the deeply traditional, often driven by the same underlying desire for proof that the ingredient works.
CLINICAL SKINCARE IS GETTING CROWDED
The ingredients posting the most dramatic growth in skincare are not household names. Polydeoxyribonucleotide (PDRN), a DNAderived regenerative active borrowed from aesthetic medicine, recorded a Popularity Index of 1.4 million with a 322.3% year-on-year increase. Its more specific variant, salmon PDRN, grew 2 900% – a figure that would be easy to dismiss as a social media anomaly if the underlying search behaviour did not suggest genuine purchase intent.
NAD (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide) grew 2 200% year on year to a Popularity Index of 303 800. Volufiline™, a plant-derived volumising active, grew 1 200% to 219 800 –with consumers actively searching ‘volufiline before and after’ and ‘volufiline reddit’, which says a great deal about where trust is currently being built and tested.
Hexapeptide posted 2 800% growth to 19 300.
What is notable here is not just the growth rates, but the nature of the search queries driving them. Consumers are comparing, reviewing safety profiles and looking for evidence before they buy. Brands that can provide evidence, both clearly and credibly, are better positioned than those that simply namedrop an active on pack.
At the more established end of the category, retinol reached a Popularity Index of 2.1 million (23.5% growth year on year) and collagen 1.6 million (16.6% growth).
Botanicals are skincare also holding their own in skincare. Beta-glucan grew 739.9% to 68 800, driven largely by K-beauty brand momentum and its association with barrier repair and hydration. Centella asiatica reached 1.0 million (146.9% growth) and ceramides grew 126.8% to 161 100 — both benefitting from a consumer appetite for ingredients that are perceived as gentle and evidence-backed in equal measure.
TRUSTED TRADITIONAL INGREDIENTS
There is a clear resurgence of heritage ingredients. Beef tallow, which recorded a Popularity Index of 1.1 million (74.1% growth year on year), is being actively researched by consumers who distrust synthetic alternatives and are willing to engage with unconventional formulations if the results stack up.
Turmeric held strong at a Popularity Index of 903 400 in skincare and 860 500 in body care, with turmeric oil growing 322.7% year on year in body care. Red ginseng grew 1 200% and fermented rice water 1 000%. Both ingredients have deep roots in traditional East Asian cosmetic practice and are now finding a global consumer audience via social media.
BEYOND THE BASICS OF HAIR CARE
Keratin continues to dominate in hair care, with a Popularity Index of 2.9 million and a year-on-year increase of 36.5%.
Avocado oil grew 483.8% year on year to 82 300. Jojoba oil grew 137.9% to 79 300. Batana oil, a Central American botanical with strong social media backing, posted 81.6% growth to 671 300. Castor oil, a longstanding staple in hair growth and beard care, grew 49.3% to 289 200.

Onion extract grew 80.7% to 215 200. These are not new ingredients – but their renewed momentum reflects a hair care consumer who is actively building ingredientled routines rather than simply reaching for a branded product.
The most forward-looking development in the category is the rapid rise of peptides. With a 118.7% year-on-year increase to 39 300, peptide-based scalp serums are gaining meaningful traction. Procapil and Capixyl – peptide complexes associated with hair density and follicle support – grew 1 300% and 136.4% respectively. This data shows that the skinification of hair care has moved from industry prediction to consumer reality.
Consumers are comparing, reviewing safety profiles and looking for evidence before they buy
FACIAL ACTIVES FOR BODY CARE
The body care numbers confirm what many in the industry have suspected – consumers are no longer treating body care as an afterthought. Hypochlorous acid grew 2 200% in the body care category to a Popularity Index of 64 400, driven by interest in gentle, multifunctional sanitising formats.
Niacinamide grew 355.5% in body care. Salicylic acid, up 73.2% in body care applications, is being sought in body wash and lotion formats specifically for bacne and keratosis pilaris, which are conditions previously under-supported by mainstream product ranges. Magnesium, including epsom salt formats, also continued to grow, pointing to a broader consumer interest in body care products that do more than simply cleanse or moisturise.

PRACTICAL IMPLICATIONS FOR INDUSTRY
The 2026 Spate data suggests that consumers have become selective in a more sophisticated way, pursuing clinical actives and traditional botanicals in line with a specific outcome.
For manufacturers and formulators, the practical implication is straightforward: efficacy claims need to be substantiated, format innovation matters, and the gap

Advanced active ingredients for hair repair
As formulation science continues to advance, the demand for cosmetic actives that deliver clinically substantiated results is reshaping the hair care ingredient market.

Quimivita’s Vita Hya Hair Repair responds to this demand with a dual-molecularweight hyaluronate system engineered to address moisture deficiency, structural degradation and loss of elasticity across all hair fibre types.
The active combines cationic high molecular weight sodium hyaluronate (HMW-HA) with oligo sodium hyaluronate (low molecular weight) to achieve complementary mechanisms of action within the hair shaft. The cationic modification of the HMW fraction enhances substantivity to the negatively charged surface of damaged or chemically treated hair, ensuring prolonged deposition and film formation. This surface-active fraction improves combability, reduces static charge and imparts a conditioning effect detectable even at low inclusion levels.
The oligomeric hyaluronate fraction penetrates the cortex more readily due to its reduced chain length, delivering intracellular hydration and supporting the restoration of hair’s natural moisture-protein equilibrium. This two-pronged approach – surface conditioning combined with cortical hydration –distinguishes Vita Hya Hair Repair from singlefraction hyaluronate ingredients that address only one aspect of fibre integrity.
A VERSATILE AND DYNAMIC INGREDIENT
Vita Hya Hair Repair is compatible with rinse-off and leave-on formats, including shampoos, conditioners, treatment masks and serums. It demonstrates stability across the varied pH and rheology profiles encountered in these systems. The versatility of the active ingredient makes it suitable for application across all hair types,
Vita Hya Hair Repair is compatible with rinse-off and leave-on formats
including chemically relaxed, colour-treated, heat-processed and naturally textured hair where structural compromise and hydration loss are primary concerns.
STABILISED CAFFEINE DERIVATIVE FOR MULTI-APPLICATION
Caffeine has been well established in cosmetic science as a bioactive compound capable of stimulating follicular metabolism, inhibiting phosphodiesterase activity and improving microcirculation at the scalp level. These mechanisms of action are relevant to hair loss management and hair growth support.
In formulation design, particularly in transparent or hydroalcoholic systems, the solubility of caffeine is limited. The ingredient is also susceptible to crystallisation under fluctuating temperature conditions.
Quimivita’s Vitaffeine Repair is a nextgeneration caffeine derivative developed specifically to overcome these physicochemical constraints. By modifying the caffeine molecule to increase aqueous solubility and thermal stability, Vitaffeine eliminates crystal formation. This is a critical advantage for formulators working with serums, tonics and

leave-on treatments, which must maintain visual clarity and homogeneity across distribution and retail temperature ranges.
A CREDIBLE ALTERNATIVE TO RAW CAFFEINE
Beyond its improved processability, Vitaffeine Repair retains the bioactivity profile associated with caffeine, making it applicable across a broad range of cosmeceutical and functional personal care categories. These include scalp treatments targeting androgenetic alopecia and diffuse hair thinning, topical anti-cellulite and slimming formulations, eye-contour
products addressing periorbital oedema and dark circles, and UV-protective systems where caffeine’s antioxidant activity provides supplementary photoprotection.
For hair care formulators, Vitaffeine Repair offers a technically credible replacement for raw caffeine, with the added benefit of predictable performance under accelerated stability tests. It is suitable for inclusion in shampoos, scalp serums and targeted hair growth treatments at use concentrations consistent with efficacy data, without compromising the sensory or aesthetic properties of the final formulation.
DISTRIBUTED BY CHEMPURE
Both Vita Hya Hair Repair and Vitaffeine Repair are available in South Africa from Chempure, a leading distributor of speciality and functional cosmetic ingredients. It's important to address women's cha nging nutritional needs at different life stages such as menstruation, pregnancy and menopause, as this can significantly impact their quality of life. Minerals are essential for the proper functioning of the body, for women especially. Untreated deficiencies can lead to a range of serious health issues, including hormone imbalances, skin irritation, osteoporosis and anemia. Focusing on these aspects can help ensure that women are healthier, stronger and able to lead fulfilling lives.
Minerals like iron, calcium, magnesium and zinc are essential for women's overall well-being and vitality. They play key roles in bone health, hormone regulation, improved energy levels, antioxidant support and immune function.
ENERGISE AND THRIVE WITH IRON
Iron, which is necessary to produce red blood cells and hemoglobin, plays a critical role in women's health. Due to blood loss during menstruation and increased blood volume during pregnancy, women have higher requirement of iron - this is particularly important for healthy development of the baby. Furthermore, iron is involved in several other important functions of the body including energy metabolism and immune system.

CREATE A STRONG FOUNDATION WITH CALCIUM
This key mineral holds a pivotal position and is essential for women. Calcium is effective
Minerals are essential for the proper functioning of the body, for women especially
in lowering blood pressure, managing migraines and reducing symptoms of premenstrual syndrome.
Since women are at a higher risk of developing osteoporosis, ensuring sufficient calcium intake is essential for maintaining strong bones and teeth. Moreover, calcium promotes normal muscle function and energy metabolism.
MAGNESIUM FOR RELAXATION AND VITALITY
Another key mineral for women is magnesium. It is involved in more than 300 biochemical reactions. Magnesium participates in hormone regulation and can help to reduce common premenstrual symptoms in women at childbearing age. Magnesium contributes to healthy bones and muscles, promotes energy production and improves mood and sleep, making it equally important for menopausal women.

Omega-3: A foundational nutrient for women
Across every stage of a woman’s life, nutritional needs evolve in response to physiological, hormonal and metabolic changes. Among the nutrients that consistently stand out for their breadth of benefits and scientific substantiation is Omega-3 long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids.
The benefits of Omega-3 fatty acids span cardiovascular health, cognitive and emotional wellbeing, reproductive outcomes, inflammatory balance and healthy ageing, making it a strategic ally in women’s health formulations.
From adolescence through pregnancy, adulthood and menopause, Omega-3 fatty acids support core biological functions that underpin long-term health. DHA plays a structural role in neuronal membranes and visual tissues, while EPA supports inflammatory regulation, vascular health and emotional balance. As women cannot efficiently synthesise EPA and DHA endogenously, reliable dietary intake or supplementation becomes essential, particularly during periods of increased demand.
The importance of DHA is most pronounced during pregnancy and lactation, where maternal DHA status directly influences foetal brain and retinal development. Adequate Omega-3 intake during these stages is

associated with improved neurocognitive and visual outcomes in infants, alongside benefits for maternal wellbeing. In adult women, EPA and DHA contribute to lipid balance, vascular function and inflammatory control an increasingly relevant consideration as cardiovascular risk rises after the age of 40, often without overt symptoms.
Omega-3 also plays a meaningful role in managing inflammation-driven discomfort, including joint stiffness and premenstrual symptoms. EPA’s ability to modulate prostaglandin pathways makes it particularly valuable in formulations targeting menstrual comfort, musculoskeletal health and daily inflammatory balance.
SOURCING AND PURITY MATTER
It is important to note that not all Omega-3 sources deliver equivalent biological value. Plant-based Omega-3 such as ALA convert poorly to EPA and DHA, placing emphasis on high-quality marine-derived sources. Purity, oxidative stability and standardisation are
