Avon Justine aligns its digital platforms to empower more women THE GLOBAL BEAUTY brand has reaffirmed its commitment to championing women empowerment by aligning its digital platforms to bolster the earning opportunity of its beauty entrepreneurs. This development also celebrates the milestones achieved by so many of its independent representatives across its southern African operations. This 130-year old company was the first to pioneer the direct-selling model in the beauty industry. ‘The direct selling model gives expression to our drive to foster women empowerment and financial independence. Women are the primary drivers of our industry and we believe they should be given an opportunity to reap the benefits of the growth of the beauty and cosmetics industry. SYMRISE ACQUIRES BIOTECH COMPANY,
Drug development booms
for sleeping disorders DESPITE WARNING LABELS on packaging, GlobalData predicts the worldwide sleeping disorders market to reach US$1.7 billion by 2023. Although there is a strong emergence of alternative resources for improving sleep, such as psychotherapy, herbal teas and ointments, the proven efficacy of pharma products remains the factor that attracts most insomniacs to sleeping pills According to the data and analytics company, the global sleeping disorders market is worth over US$1.5 billion and expected to reach over US$1.7 billion by 2023. Yet primary research conducted by GlobalData shows the market is in need of drugs with better safety profiles and fewer side effects. A recent spike in accidental deaths from sleeping pill overdoses has resulted in the
FDA’s executive decision to add warning labels to popular medications for insomnia. Magdalene Crabbe, pharma analyst at GlobalData, comments: ‘Psychological dependence is also a major issue for patients, many of whom suffer from comorbid mental disorders. Drugs with novel mechanisms of action are in the best position to address the unmet needs for this therapy area. ‘With more than 80 drugs in clinical development for sleep disturbances, drug companies are likely to focus more on improving patient safety. This is expected to encourage growth within the sleep disorders market, of which the indications will affect up to 40 percent of the global population over the age of 15 at some point in their lifetime.’
Neopac recognised for sustainable innovations THE INTERNATIONAL PRODUCER of quality packaging has been acknowledged in two prestigious industry competitions for several of its innovative packaging solutions. At LuxePack New York, Hoffmann Neopac was one of five finalists for a Green Award, for its PICEA tube, which houses a line of Madara hair conditioners. The PICEA wood tube is made of 95 percent renewable material, sourced from PEFC certified forests in the EU. The tube offers a carbon footprint 40 percent better than standard polyethylene tubes. It also maintains excellent barrier and decoration properties and is recyclable. These features align with Neopac’s vision for an eco-friendlier future. The second honour was received at the 50th Anniversary of the prestigious Swiss Packaging Awards where Neopac’s InShape Box for E-Cigarettes won in the coveted Design category. It also received a nomination for its practical Dropper Tube D3 Piccolo, in the Convenience category. The innovative drip system of the dropper allows the precise release of 200 I.E. Vitamin D, especially ideal for children. The tube’s glass-free packaging offers portability and enhanced user safety. ‘We are honoured to receive awards and nominations in such prestigious competitions within the packaging industry,’ comments Cornelia Schmid, head of marketing for Hoffmann Neopac. ‘As a leader in the industry and forerunners in the eco-friendly tube solution market, these recognitions solidify our innovation and sustainability efforts.’

DID YOU KNOW? SILICONES ARE THE IDEAL INGREDIENTS FOR CLEAN BEAUTY.
What is Clean Beauty? Clean Beauty is all about ingredient safety over source incorporating both synthetic and natural materials. While maybe a surprise to many not all natural ingredients are safe and not all synthetic ingredients are unsafe. With Clean Beauty, brands are focused on not using materials that are known to be harmful or irritating but instead ones that are safe and efficacious.
Why do silicones fit into Clean Beauty? Along with their safety, enhanced performance of active ingredients, compatibility with other materials including naturals, and the unmatched sensory acceptance, silicones are extremely valuable and desired for cosmetic formulations. Besides the basic cosmetic products, silicones are used extensively in OTC, baby care, medical applications, and sensitive skin products due to their non-irritating characteristics. •
Silicones are also not animal derived and therefore approved by vegans as cruelty free materials.
•
They are not related to palm and RSPO issues and are certified as GMO free.
•
The types of silicones used in cosmetic products are supported by scientific research and are considered extremely safe for consumer use.
•
They are not occlusive and protect the epidermis with a breathable layer.
•
In the environment they degrade in sunlight and in soil.
•
Silicones are effective, inert, and versatile ingredients that benefit skin and hair in numerous ways.

he market for naturally positioned personal care products continue to grow at a rapid pace. It is primarily driven by ingredient trends, product efficacy and brand ethics from the perspective of consumers.
Yet the industry drivers are far more complex. These include recognised certifications and compliant labelling, traceability, sustainability, testing, safety parameters and the use of ecofriendly or recyclable packaging. Coschem’s natural and organic seminar sought to bring attendees up to speed on these pressing developments within the global personal care industry. GIZ consultant in South Africa, Cyril Lombard discussed how government and international development agencies like GIZ are supporting biotrade and the local indigenous plants sector to overcome regulatory hurdles. This includes closing gaps in a coherent and professional way, to create sustainable jobs. Will Coetsee shared a first hand account of the certification process, covering the ins and outs of natural and organic certifications which are applicable to suppliers and brand owners or manufacturers.
Trends and test methods Future natural and organic trends such as recyclable packaging and the total wellbeing trend came under the spotlight in Chantal O'Brien De Villiers’ presentation. She discussed some of the recent developments in food packaging, which seen to be now influencing forward-thinking international cosmetics and home care brands. O'Brien De Villiers is from Materia Medica. Lee-Ann Raaff of the Photobiology Laboratory at Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University shared an overview of product evaluation, protocols and test methods applicable to natural and organic brands and products, as well as those that are mainstream. Shani Vermeulen of Cosmetic Ingredients shed light on the polyfunctionality of vegetable oils and the immense skin and hair care benefits these unique ingredients bring to cosmetics and personal care products. •
