ithout a doubt 2020 has been an exceptionally challenging year for all of us. The global pandemic has been especially detrimental to an already fragile manufacturing and industrial industry in South Africa.

The industry had to deal with supply chain disruptions and almost a month of stalled operations. Some businesses went under while others had to make tough decisions, such as cutting staff, in order to stay afloat. According to Fin24 the Absa Purchasing Managers’ Index for the first quarter of the year showed manufacturing in South Africa had contracted, falling to its lowest levels since the 2009 global recession.

The road ahead will be a difficult one.

NEW CAT S42 SMARTPHONE IS FULLY WASHABLE AND WITHSTANDS HARSH SANITISERS The Cat S42 features unrivalled toughness and proven durability that makes it an essential everyday work phone, especially for more demanding environments, such as the logistics industry.

Drop-tested, multiple times, onto steel from 1.8m, on every side and corner, Cat phones are built to be impervious to dust and are fully waterproof - surpassing the IP68 rating (tested in 1.5m depth for 35 mins).

A study by the University of Arizona found that a typical worker’s desk has more than 100 times more bacteria than an office toilet seat.

SA’S WIND ENERGY INDUSTRY OPENS UP FOR ZEST WEG

Optimal turbine positioning and maximisation of energy yield determined by micro-siting studies Zest WEG has entered South Africa’s wind energy industry, combining exciting turbine technology with its established footprint in the local economy.

The development of a direct drive, gearless wind turbine by its parent company WEG is a key factor in Zest WEG’s plan to grow a client base among wind farm developers, says Alastair Gerrard, integrated solutions executive at Zest WEG. “With WEG’s latest 4.2 MW wind turbine solution – which augments its initial offering of a 2.1 MW unit – we see considerable scope for broadening our technology offering locally and into the rest of Africa,” he says.

With four decades as a local supplier, manufacturer and service provider in South Africa, he says Zest WEG has extensive market presence

and knowledge upon which to build. In particular, the company is well-placed to meet the local content requirements for participating in the wind energy segment.

“We have prepared the ground for developing local skills and supply chains in our contribution to wind energy projects,” Gerrard says. “Given our experience in South Africa, our products and solutions also meet the necessary regulations and standards, including grid code compliance, which is vital for projects that will feed power to the national utility.”

The positive take-up of the WEG wind turbine – mainly in South America – is reflected by the 647 MW of capacity that has contributed to the market in recent years; another 181 MW is in the pipeline. He highlights that having no gearbox in the turbine offered a number of benefits.

“There is increased efficiency, less noise and weight, and one less component means less maintenance,” he says. “The whole design is focused on efficiency and reliability, for maximum output and uptime.”

The WEG turbine also includes the transformer in the nacelle, rather than at the tower base. This transformer steps up the 925 volts generated by the alternator to 33 kV, reducing losses through more efficient energy transmission. There is also then no need for a separate transformer and its associated infrastructure at ground level.

“We are looking forward to leveraging WEG’s tried-and-tested turbine technology from Brazil, from our established foundation as a wellrecognised local player,” Gerrard concludes.

ATLAS COPCO’S NEW SURFACE ROCK DRILLS BRING NOISE LEVELS DOWN BY 75% Owing to an ergonomic design, Atlas Copco’s new Surface Rock Drills, the SRD range are lightweight, versatile and easy-to-handle, getting the job done seamlessly, productively and safely.

Engineered to perform optimally even under the toughest of working environments, these robust tools are ideal for drilling and breaking applications in construction and quarrying. Fitted with eco-friendly power packs, several drills can be conveniently and cost-effectively operated with a single compressor.

Thanks to the smart Solid / Single Body design, the pneumatic tools which are available in 20kg and 25kg versions, boast a world-class powerto-weight ratio making them wellbalanced for easy, comfortable operation. The solid housing eliminates leakages and increases cylinder lifecycle while fewer moving parts means less wear.

In addition, these tools are HAPS (Hand and Arm Protection Systems) enabled which lessens the impact of vibrations, making it possible to extend working hours up to six-fold.

In order to further shrink vibration and wear, the tool’s piston switches on air cushions on both ends of the cylinder, almost fully eliminating metal-to-metal contact when working off-load. The vibration level of the SRD 25 is 50% lower compared to previous generation tools.

Atlas Copco has developed a pneumatic dust collector to protect operators from the large amounts of silica dust produced during drilling and breaking. Powered by compressed air and utilising vacuum technology, the dust collector efficiently removes dust directly at the source, maintaining levels below the permissible exposure limit. The semiautomatic filter cleaning mechanism requires minimal maintenance, the dust collector consumes no more than 12 litres of air per second and its recyclable collection bags will last for an eight-hour shift. The unit is suitable for indoor and outdoor use.

In addition, these one-piece machines are easy to assemble and disassemble, facilitating service and maximising up time.

The SRDs are equipped with Assisted Flushing Technology which is activated by opening the flashing valve to allow an additional flow of compressed air through a pathway in the cylinder to flush the drill hole while operating.

“This technology can improve productivity by up to 17%!” notes Atlas Copco Power Technique’s business line manager for portable products, David Stanford Stanford draws attention to Atlas Copco’s a zero-compromise approach when it comes to operator safety and comfort, stressing that Atlas Copco places operators at the core of its tool design. The two-step SOFTSTART trigger gives operators full control enabling them to start a cut with surgical precision even under difficult conditions.

BEAMS DATA TRACKING HELPS MINES IMPROVE Centralising information from its proximity detection system (PDS) hardware and monitoring devices, Booyco Electronics offers mines a rare opportunity to become both safer and more productive.

According to Anton Lourens, CEO of proximity detection solutions leader Booyco Electronics, a single source of information on the mine’s assets is the key to enhancing operations by identifying patterns of unsafe behaviour.

“Our Booyco Electronics Asset Management System (BEAMS) is essentially a central information hub for the mine’s PDS assets,” says Lourens.

“The software suite is a web-based application used on a robust database, linking the PDS hardware products and the monitoring devices.”

This provides a single source of data

that can be leveraged for greater insight into relevant aspects of the mining operation – raising the level of safety and productivity in the workplace.

“The real achievement of BEAMS is that it allows the data from our Booyco CWS, Booyco PDS or Booyco CXS to be analysed for patterns which indicate unsafe behaviour,” he says. “Customers can then design an appropriate intervention to prevent any further occurrences.”

He emphasises that this allows a mine to paint a picture of the complete working environment, shedding new light on operational issues which were previously not visible.

Measuring the working environment and interactions in this way then means that risks and bottlenecks can be actively reduced and managed – boosting

productivity as a result. This helps to give mines an in-depth view of the operation and the performance of their related assets.

“We have engineered BEAMS for easy implementation,” Lourens says. “It can be used on web browser platforms, and is designed to be adaptable to the information and infrastructure environment.”

BEAMS can also integrate with the lamp room management systems in underground mines, ensuring legal compliance with lamp room requirements.

It helps mines locate its safety equipment such as lamps, self-contained self-rescuers and gas instrumentation.

“BEAMS can be set up to suit the needs of each user,” says Lourens. “It can generate a standard set of reports, or be customised to specific requirements.”

NEW SCRAPETEC PRIMETRACKER IMPROVES CONVEYOR OPERATIONS New to BLT WORLD’s comprehensive range of bulk materials handling equipment is the Scrapetec PrimeTracker belt tracker, which eliminates problems associated with conveyor belt systems, including misalignment, abrasion and belt damage.

“For optimum performance of a conveyor system, it is critical that the belt always runs straight on the conveyor, without sideways movement. BLT WORLD’s new PrimeTracker belt tracker has been designed to automatically guide a conveyor belt back into the correct straight-line position, to prevent costly downtime and component replacement,” explains Ken Mouritzen, managing director, BLT WORLD. “An advantage of the Scrapetec PrimeTracker is that it is operates in the idling position at all times, unless there is sideways movement of the belt. This system corrects misalignment immediately, by guiding the belt back into the correct position, with no damage or abrasion to the belt or tracker.

“This is unlike conventional belt trackers that slide over the belt surface causing possible abrasion and belt damage - rather than adopting free rotation. Conventional belt trackers, with tapered edges, never idle and are always in a braking mode.

“What’s also notable, is the cylindrical shape and pivot bush that allow this belt tracker to swing and tilt during operation and to always be in full contact with the belt.

Added to this, the Scrapetec PrimeTracker has the same peripheral speed over the entire surface of the belt, where traditional crowned rollers have different speeds at the centre and edges of the system.”

Other advantages include easy installation, low maintenance requirements and protection of belt edges and structure of the conveyor belt. A strong corrugated EPDM rubber hose protects this system from dust and sand, while the rubber pivot offers soft

SERCO TRAILER INTERNAL USED AS MOBILE INSPECTION OF MACHINERY IS A BLOOD BANK CINCH WITH SKF ENDOSCOPE

The new Emergency Vehicle Conversion that Serco built for the South African National Blood Service A Serco-built trailer has been converted into a mobile blood donation centre for use outdoors at a variety of locations including big events, shopping centres and in the community.

The trailer was built with window apertures and interior partitions for Emergency Vehicle Conversion (EVC), the company which did all the conversion essentials and extras to make it userfriendly for their client, the South African National Blood Service (SANBS).

The vehicle has already been used at a variety of events and was due to be at the 2020 Rand Show in Johannesburg and on the Durban beachfront during the Easter holiday period, however the COVID-19 lockdown intervened.

EVC, based in Boksburg in Gauteng, converts vehicles to specification for use as ambulances, emergency services vehicles, mobile clinics, camper vans, and mobile offices, among others.

EVC sales manager Jonathan Greenhill says he was approached

by SANBS who were looking for a mobile unit fitted out and equipped to ensure donors enjoy and feel comfortable using the facility - similar to the good experience standards experienced at the blood services’ fixed site centres.

“We called in Serco – they had been close neighbours of ours in Boksburg before they moved to their new premises – and decided on the insulated trailer best suited for our purposes.

“Working with the basic vehicle they built for us, we added the flooring, self-contained solar-powered electrical system, airconditioning, plumbing, furniture, and other equipment. The unit is also wheelchair-friendly and has facilities for the disabled,’ says Greenhill.

It is the first time EVC has done business with Serco and Greenhill said they were pleased with the final product and there was a possibility of more business in the pipeline for the company.

The TKES 10 Endoscope Series from SKF is designed for fast, easy internal inspection of machinery with minimal need for machine disassembly, delivering significant savings in terms of both time and money to customers and end-users.

“By helping to minimise the need for laborious and time consuming disassembly of machinery prior to inspection, this compact, user-friendly first-line inspection tool optimises machine availability and maximises uptime and productivity,” says Eddie Martens, SKF product manager, MaPro. The TKES 10 Series is available in three different models and has been specially developed by SKF to cater to a wide range of applications and customer requirements. The tool is packed with several advanced and value adding features including a high resolution miniature camera with up to 2 digital zoom capabilities that delivers a clear and sharp full screen image easily visible on the 3.5” backlit display screen. Up to 50 000 images and 120 minutes of video footage can be saved or stored on the SD memory card.

The one metre long insertion tube, which is supplied in three different variants - flexible, semi-rigid or with an articulating tip, features a small 5.8 mm tip diameter and a wide field of view to facilitate access as well as visibility inside machines, including even narrow, difficult-to-reach areas. Martens adds that the side view adapter makes it possible to use the SKF Endoscope to inspect applications such as pipe walls while powerful variable LED lighting allows for inspections in dark locations. There are also other options with varying lengths for both the flexible and semi-rigid insertion tubes.

Technology had already been pushing its way into the cracks of traditional working practices, changing the dynamics of workplace culture and workforce interaction.

Solutions wrapped in the delicate layers of augmented and virtual reality (AR/VR), the rich potential of the Internet of Things (IoT), and the extraordinary capabilities of artificial intelligence (AI) were transforming the ideas of work and how it was to be managed.

WORK FROM HOME Not only is this highly relevant at a time when lockdowns and shutdowns could re-occur at any given moment or wave of infection, but it will likely be a mandatory requirement for many skilled employees as they look towards a new way of working in the future. The ability to work from home has not, as so many predicted, resulted in reduced productivity and poor performance, but rather in longer hours, better deliverables, and improved results. he Ranger 2.2 TDCi 4x4 XLS is Ford’s midrange bakkie designed to be rugged enough to be used as a workhorse but with all the comforts of a family car. The vehicle’s 2.2-litre TDCi engine is great for everyday use. With 118 kW and 385 Nm, the Ranger performs well on the highway or on gravel roads and inclines. The fuel consumption is also very satisfactory returning figures in the region of 9.5 L/100 km. The six-speed automatic transmission makes this Ranger a pleasure to drive. It delivers a smooth ride more akin to a luxury vehicle than a 4X4.

OFF THE BEATEN TRACK Once we took it off-road the electronic transfer case allowed us to easily shift between 2H, 4H and 4L. The vehicle’s ground clearance is 237mm, which allows you to easily clear objects on the path ahead and offers a nice high vantage point. The Ranger 2.2 TDCi 4x4 XLS also carries a maximum tow capacity of 3 500 kg.

Parking can become a bit tricky but the rear parking sensors and reverse-view camera are welcome additions and, once you get used to using them, can make parking manoeuvres much easier.

PERFECT FOR ROADTRIPS The interior of the Ranger 2.2 TDCi 4x4 XLS is surprisingly comfortable and features a few standard luxury features such as manual airconditioning, mounted controls on the steering wheel and cruise control, which makes long distance driving a pleasure. How to access funding for an alternative power solution for your business A leading investor in clean energy projects, Standard Bank Group, has announced the launch of a newly commissioned 1-Megawatt Dual Axis Solar PV plant at the Nelson Mandela University (NMU) in Port Elizabeth.

T

he solar plant is a result of a collaboration between Standard Bank and the PPA Company, which is a wholly owned subsidiary of Tagex AG and an approved supplier of solar PV instillations for the bank.

Standard Bank was able to provide a financing solution to fund instillation of the system via the Solar Asset PV solution in the Commercial Asset Finance division while the PPA Company is involved in engineering, procurement and construction of the plant.

To ensure sustainability of the project, Standard Bank provided the funding in accordance with a long-term Power Purchase Agreements, which was concluded with the university and allows the educational institution access to clean power, generated at beneficial tariffs.

ALTERNATIVE POWER SOURCES The system is a 1-Megawatt dual axis system, and this allows the solar panels to track the movement of the sun, thus maximising the system’s production capability.

Capable of processing cans at 130°C and 170kPa, it can be seen as a continuous pressure cooker.

This saves a lot of energy and manpower when compared to a traditional batch retort system loaded by hand.

MADE FROM LOCALLY PROCURED MATERIALS The machine was designed and built by JBT Engineers in Cape town from locally procured materials. JBT undertook 70% of the manufacturing in-house while the other 30% was sourced from local suppliers that specialise in line forgings, large machining laser cutting, bending etc. All pressure vessels built in Cape town is designed and manufactured in accordance with the ASME Pressure vessel manufacturing code.

No boom nor doom expected for materials handling sector The materials handling and industrial equipment sector has had to adjust to a quickly shifting landscape as predictions for the industry were quickly turned on their heads with the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. EIE Group CEO, Gary Neubert says as the economic data continues to paint a bleak picture for South Africa, it is evident that many industries will continue to take strain in the coming months, with more retrenchments on the cards and the unemployment situation worsening.

“

As businesses negotiate the uncertainties around the COVID-19 pandemic, the most flexible operations will ride out the storm more effectively and the country will probably begin to see the start of a slow recovery process in 2021.

“While there is unlikely to be positive GDP growth next year, we should witness steady progress over the next 12 to 18 months.

Government’s ability to attract investment into the country will be a key factor in accelerating this process,” he adds.

STAND AGAINST CORRUPTION Neubert says he is particularly encouraged by the stand President Ramaphosa has taken against corruption. “Giving the National Prosecuting Authority the teeth to start bringing offenders to book is an excellent step towards building positive sentiment in the country,” he adds.

That said, Neubert suggests businesses are still in for a tough ride. “Some businesses will obviously do better than others, but my feeling is that the most well-run operations will be the ones that survive, especially those with the ability to change quickly.”

RENTAL VS PURCHASE There have been a few surprises for the material handling and industrial equipment sector, which have highlighted just how important it is to be resilient and adaptable.

What the EIE Group thought might herald the move to more of a rental market did not transpire in a significant way. “We had predicted that more customers would choose the rental route to preserve their cash-flow situations. Instead, what happened is that the interest rate dropped and banks continued to lend money. For many of our customers, it made more sense to purchase equipment than go the rental option,” says Neubert.

“So, what we thought might be the transition to a mature rental market like the United Kingdom where more than 80% of the business is rental, the rental side of our business has only increased by about 10%, from 50% rental before COVID-19 to about 60% now,” he explains.

BACK TO THE OFFICE In July, Neubert was also planning for employees to work from home indefinitely.

Instead, most people were back at work from 1 September, except for those in highrisk categories.

“The novelty of working from home quickly wore off and many of our people seemed quite excited about coming back to work.

We have obviously put stringent measures in place to ensure everyone’s safety. Perhaps, going forward, this is what is going to be different – the way we view day to day safety in the office and on site,” he says.

Neubert says no one can predict exactly what the future holds, but suggests that companies that are change-fit will be the true survivors. “For example, we know that new equipment sales are going to be difficult for the next 12 months, so we are boosting pre-owned sales. We are adapting as we go along. And that is key: agility and adaptability are our watchwords.”

Tubing technology pumps polymers for dewatering efficiency As part of the Little Traverse Bay Environmental Project in northern Michigan, environmental consulting firm Pescador LLC treats groundwater using a niche polymer. When its diaphragm metering pumps proved ineffective in handling this chemical, they worked with Watson-Marlow Fluid Technology Group to install a new low maintenance, high-accuracy pumping solution.

olyacrylamide (PAM) acts as a flocculant.

As one of the steps utilised in Pescador’s process, this anionic polymer attracts huge numbers of the miniscule organic material, pinflocs that float in the solution to concentrate them as a larger floc. Once gathered in this way, dissolved air floatation (DAF) can push the debris to the surface so it can be skimmed off.

However, PAM and other polymers challenge traditional off-the-shelf pumping systems.

Using a diaphragm metering pump, equipment failure plagued Pescador with downtime and high costs.

The chemical attacks standard santoprene tubing, and with highly viscous polymers such as at this site, rapidly wrecks pumps that are not specifically designed for such a task. In search of a lower maintenance solution, Pescador contacted Watson-Marlow Fluid Technology Group. Our experts suggested a new product, the Qdos ReNu PU.

The Qdos 20 ReNu PU pumphead installed at the site on the DAF application lasted over two years and never failed (application details: 0.015 USGPH, 24/7, 365) before being replaced due to minor calibration drift.

SPECIALISED TUBING FOR POLYMERS At the heart of the solution is a new tube technology that increases the chemical compatibility range of Qdos. Specifically designed with polymers in mind, the tubing is aliphatic hydrocarbon resistant, so the chemical does not attack the tubing in the way it otherwise would. In addition to protecting the pumphead, the peristaltic pump protects the chemical itself. Polymers are susceptible to mechanical degradation. If agitated and mixed prior to use, the chemical will not work as intended. Through Watson-Marlow’s peristaltic technology, the pump protects the chemical Pescador is injecting in the process.

The Qdos 20 ReNu PU pump is made up of two main components: the drive, which includes the pump’s intelligence, and a separate pumphead, which is the only consumable part of the pump. This makes the Qdos a drop-in solution, whereas diaphragm metering pumps need four or five ancillary systems (backpressure valves, pulsation dampeners, strainers, float switches)—each with their own maintenance schedules. For example, the check valves on Pescador’s original diaphragm metering pump set-up proved inadequate in the face of high viscosity. The Qdos pump also eliminated the need for flooded suction which the diaphragm metering pump depended on.

This consolidated system is also entirely enclosed, offering a major improvement for spill reduction. Polymer is a very slippery chemical.
