the industry, yet the construction industry is still hopeful of seeing tangible benefits. Despite the slump, the construction industry remains one of South Africa’s most important sectors, making up about four percent of the GDP. The industry is also a prolific employer, offering school leavers entry into the workforce as well as training and skills development opportunities. A month has passed since South Africa’s national election so we can only hope for increasing stability, especially in this integral industry. In this edition of Industrial Buyer we look at various aspects of the South African construction industry with a special focus on health and safety. On page 6 we delve deep into the concept of building management systems and on page 7 we find out how vulnerable industrial organisations are to cyber threats. Drill deep into essential Building Management Systems As the demand for the automation of security and other systems in buildings and large construction sites around the world grows, so we are seeing a significant and related increase in the demand for building management systems (BMS). Director at Smart Integration, an Ulwembu Business Services’ initiative, Glenn Noome discusses the growth of the Building Management Systems (BMS) industry across the globe.

R

ecent technological advancements in the building and construction industry, as well as the growing use of Internet of Things (IoT) technology in building automation systems, added to increasing demand for energy-efficient systems and the growing penetration of smartphones in building automation, are all playing a role in fuelling the growth of the BMS industry across the globe. A recent survey by Radiant Insights, ‘Global Building Management System Market Size, Status and Forecast 2025’, stated there are several additional factors influencing the ongoing BMS market growth. These include cost efficiencies, the increasing adoption of building management systems within both the commercial and residential spaces, simplified building operations, and lower maintenance. Furthermore, favourable government initiatives and schemes to promote energy-efficient and eco-friendly buildings are expected to offer numerous growth opportunities for industry players and vendors across the globe, says the study. In South Africa in particular, the recent resurgence of load shedding has meant that both companies and individuals are more focused on energy efficiency than ever before. Thus there is a growing demand for a method of managing heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) and lighting systems in particular – due to their power hungry nature more effectively.

DATA AND FIBRE INSTALLATIONS Data and fibre installations are the cornerstone of BMS. The IP-based network forms the base infrastructure for most other BMS subsystems.

footage can be used in criminal cases that may result from these activities, and used to identify the perpetrators.

MONITOR AND CONTROL CENTRE

Glenn Noome director at Smart Integration These include CCTV, access and lighting control, telephone and alarm systems, as well as boardroom solutions, which are all IP-based systems that need to run on a stable, cabled backbone such as fibre or copper.

UTILITY SOLUTIONS Companies minimise and manage their utility (water and energy) consumption for two reasons and these are to reduce costs, and to support their corporate sustainability and environmental responsibility initiatives. These boxes can easily be checked by utilising smart water and electricity meters, alternate energy solutions, controlled lighting systems - and even blind control to minimise heat from the sun in the office or working environment.

SECURITY, ACCESS CONTROL, LIGHTING AND CCTV For local businesses, security is obviously a top priority. A CCTV surveillance system can deter, monitor and record activities within the premises that may include theft, intrusion and harm to persons. The system is able to raise early alerts to enable the correct response. In addition,

Remote monitoring and reporting capabilities should be used to support the centralised management and control of the building and the related activities within the physical environment. Data gathered and analysed can provide useful information for clients to identify trends, reduce false alarms, monitor and manage consumption of energy and water, and make prudent management decisions that support optimal security and effective building management.

FIRE PROTECTION Fire prevention, detection and suppression is a must in any populated environment. Fire protection systems must be designed, tested and inspected according to the applicable regulations, codes and standards to ensure safe working and operational conditions even in harsh environments. Building management systems are installed with the aim of creating secure, reliable buildings by giving access to the control and monitoring of activities such as ventilation, lighting, power control, data and fibre installation, data centre management and control, fire and security systems, lifts, plumbing systems and so on. The greatest advantages of BMS include efficient management and controlling of energy consumption, central and remote monitoring of the building, facilitating the safety and security of data, the stimulation of internal comfort conditions for the occupants of a building, and facilitating a longer life span for the building in general.

SA’s Industrial facilities at risk of cyber attacks

With international analysts warning of a growing risk of cyber war, sabotage and espionage impacting industrial and mining facilities, South African stakeholders must step up their efforts to mitigate risk. Industrial facilities, mining and utilities are increasingly at risk of cyber war and cyber crime attacks, warns GECI.

G

ECI is an international tactical cyber security specialist now launching its portfolio of cyber security solutions in South Africa. After Europe, GECI has chosen to expand its platform of innovative solutions in Africa, starting with South Africa where the need is clearly identified.

CYBER ATTACKS Cyber attacks have escalated beyond theft of data and ransomware attacks, to attacks specifically designed to shut down critical infrastructure, manipulate markets and even cripple entire countries, says South African GECI representative Mike Bergen. Citing attacks on major enterprises, power plants and nuclear facilities, Bergen says the increasing connectedness of industrial plants is putting them at greater risk of attack. However, Thuli Mgwebile, business development agent at GECI South Africa and MD of local GECI partner Sinac Group, says early discussions with local infrastructure stakeholders indicate their focus on cyber security is inadequate. ‘For example, we see local industrial players saying their own risk assessment exercises have found a huge amount of data leakage taking place,’ she says.

‘The increasing connectedness of industrial plants is putting them at greater risk of attack’

SIGNIFICANT VULNERABILITIES This, coupled with inadequate access controls at plants, presents significant vulnerabilities, which could be misused to devastating effect. In many industrial environments, IT and operations are still run in siloes, Bergen says, with cyber security a focus in the enterprise’s administration and data centres and little focus on cyber security in plant operations. ‘In many companies, Information Technology (IT) and Operational Technology (OT) are two domains – engineers in the plants manage their own systems and equipment, and they consider themselves separate from IT. Not all OT specialists are as aware as IT professionals are of the importance of cyber security. ‘Cyber war and cyber crime could happen to anyone - it’s a pandemic,’ he says. ‘Industrial facilities have done a lot to protect themselves from catastrophes, but not enough to protect themselves from cyber

How to deal with low quality sand

It is no secret the quality of sand significantly affects the performance of concrete and the increased scarcity of clean washed filler sand from traditional sources, such as riverbeds, is a growing concern to South African concrete manufacturers.

T

he shortage of good quality sand has been driving up the price, and also forcing manufacturers to often make the best of lower quality material. By the same token, projects in remote areas often compel contractors to make use of local materials for their concrete, even if these materials are not ideal. Hannes Engelbrecht, general manager for inland sales and marketing at Chryso Southern Africa, explains that the real challenge as a result of this situation is to ensure the concrete produced is of a consistently high quality and it matches the technical specifications demanded by the project. ‘We are in an ideal position to assist

customers who are faced with this challenge as Chryso’s high technology admixture solutions address the four key parameters of sand in these situations, namely clay content, fines, absorption and particle shape,’ he says.

DEMANDING CRITERIA The aptly named Chryso Quad range allows customers to manufacture cost optimised concrete, which meets all the most demanding performance criteria. Incorporating Chryso’s breakthrough ‘Clear’ polymer technology, the range meets the challenges presented by crushed sand including high clay content and excessive fines.

IN ACTION A good example of how this technology has recently been used is at the remote site of a wind farm in the Eastern Cape. Given the onerous logistics and prohibitive cost of transportation, material from local sources had to be used for the precast elements, which were cast on site. Chryso provided the solutions to meet the exacting specifications, which included contributing other admixtures to deal with frequent high ambient temperatures. Chryso SA za.chryso.com

BREAKTHROUGH EXPECTED IN THE AFRICAN CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY Since the highs last experienced just before the 2010 Soccer World Cup, the construction sector in South Africa and on the African continent has yet to see an industry boom. South Africa experienced a technical recession in the first and second quarters of this year. Coupled with 2018’s economic instability, woeful performances by state-owned enterprises and its negative effect on civil construction, as well as institutional uncertainly and policy paralysis that are typical of an election year, it certainly presents a less than favourable outlook for the South African construction industry.

CAUTIOUSLY OPTIMISTIC However, there is cause for optimism with the South African government’s economic stimulus plan to inject billions into infrastructure development. Add Statistics SA Q2 figures, which suggest a 2.3 percent uptick in construction activity and the construction tide may rise sooner rather than later. Research giant Fitch Solutions also expects 2019 to be the year the sector finally emerges from recession. The 2019 sub-Saharan Africa construction growth report expects year-on-year growth of 6.8 percent, considering the total infrastructure spend is expected to total R855 billion over the next three years, an increase of 2.5 percent from last year. Fitch says Ethiopia, the continent’s top construction performer, is expected to increase its construction industry value to 12.3 percent. But industry growth in Zambia and Namibia is slowing down as Zambia faces fiscal challenges and rising debt while

Namibia is seeing major projects coming to an end. Against this background, construction professionals across Africa can mark their calendar for the year’s biggest industry event - the 7th Annual African Construction and Totally Concrete Expo taking place at Gallagher Convention Centre in Johannesburg from 11 to 13 June 2019. ‘Given the construction industry’s challenges and contracting growth over the last decade, the expo affords an opportunity to rethink challenges the industry has been facing and mapping a positive way forward,’ says Tracy-Lee Behr, portfolio director of African Construction Expo at dmg events. ‘The expo is the construction industry’s largest gathering of construction professionals and provides unique opportunities for the industry as a whole when 9 500 construction professionals from over 45 countries come together to do business, form and strengthen partnerships and learn from each other.’ Moreover, Behr explains that because this year’s expo is co-located with four other industry expos – Totally Concrete

Expo; Pumps, Valves and Pipes Africa Expo; African Smart Cities Summit and African Construction Awards.

INDUSTRY DISRUPTORS Construction technology and new building methods remain the biggest disruptors for the construction industry. So, the latest industry technology will be on display and will feature the best pump, valve and pipe engineering products, building materials and smart city technology. Beyond technology, innovation and creativity, the industry’s current and future workforce and leadership are expected to play a major role in order to operate seamlessly in the growing industry set against the fourth industrial revolution. Africa has a fastgrowing young population and by providing them the opportunity to build and upskill fresh innovative talent, this will infuse fresh thinking into this sector. For that reason, the expo offers robust free workshop and training programmes to boost professional development and skill building.

BUILDING BRIDGES BETWEEN AFRICAN COMMUNITIES A magnificent bridge over the Okavango River in the Mohembo Village area which is being piled by Keller’s Franki Africa for main contractor Itinera/ Cimolai JV, is a shining example of Franki’s diverse strengths. The bridge, which connects villages on the east of the river with the rest of the country, straddles the Mohembo East (Kauxwi) Ferry landing site with the Mohembo West (Shakawe) Ferry landing site. According to Devendra Lalbasanth, Franki senior contracts manager, the 1.2km bridge, which consists of two towers for the Cable Stayed portion and 18 piers, requires 189 no. 1200 diameter, permanently cased auger piles at an average of 35m below platform level. Some of the piles required are being installed to a depth of 50m. In terms of

the ground conditions, the top 12m consists of alluvial deposits underlain by soft rock, schists and gneisses – metamorphic rock developed from basement granites - and there were no surprises in this regard as the Botswana Roads Authority’s geotechnical investigation, prior to and post the award of the contract, was thorough. ‘More than thorough,’ Lalbasanth says. ‘In excess of 100 boreholes were drilled and more than 700 rock-strength tests were completed. This was one of the most detailed geotechnical investigations we’ve ever seen.’ Lalbasanth says the nature of the site and the surrounding area were extremely challenging especially for bringing in the specialised equipment required to do the job. And it was no ordinary equipment that had to be transported to the site. It

included a Liebherr 355 – one of the largest augering machines in Africa – two Casagrande B180s, a Bauer BG 18 and two Liebherr 845 service cranes. ‘Getting this equipment to site was certainly the greatest challenge facing the Franki team. For example, before this job the Liebherr 355 was doing rigid inclusions at Clairwood Logistics Park in Durban and we converted it to an auger configuration before transporting it to Mohembo, 1 500km away,’ Lalbasanth says. He adds that a huge debt is owed to abnormal load transport specialists Transcor Transportation for their efficiency and perhaps, above all, patience in the delivery of the equipment. To date Franki has completed 50 percent of its work.

SETTING NEW LIFT TRUCK WARRANTY STANDARDS The Doosan all-weather all-electric forklift

In a ground breaking development, Goscor Lift Truck Company has rolled out an industry first, standard five-year warranty on its Doosan 7 Series range of lift trucks. The new offering is the longest ever warranty to be offered in the South African forklift industry. GLTC sales director Patrick Barber says warranty is a valuable component of any capital equipment purchase, especially mission critical and big-ticket purchases such as lift trucks. ‘It assures equipment users that their funds are being spent on a trustworthy product and the supplier is committed to the health of the equipment for the long haul,’ he says. ‘The pertinent reasoning behind the extended warranty is the fact that the initial capital investment on these machines is very high. Therefore, to retain the value on the product, the warranty is a significant component of the product lifecycle,’ says Barber.

GAME CHANGER While different lift trucks from different manufacturers may have different price tags, the length of warranties has largely remained the same for years, pegged at 12 months, which is an industry norm.

12

INDUSTRIAL BUYER MAY/JUNE 2019

GLTC’s new warranty is thus a game changer in the industry, driven by the company’s understanding that the longer and more comprehensive the warranty is, the lower the overall potential cost of ownership for owners. ‘We have been supporting the Doosan product since 1994 and have come to trust the build quality of this Korean product. We have worked closely with our principal, Doosan, to develop a product that meets our local operating conditions and support it with a fitting warranty that gives customers the peace of mind they need, especially in these difficult operating conditions,’ says Barber. Barber also reasons that the extended warranty is a sign of service commitment from GLTC as the exclusive distributor of Doosan’s range of lift trucks in the southern African market.

BEST COMBINATION The Doosan 7-Series forklift range is a product that ticks all the right boxes, from maximum productivity to cost-effective and safe operation across an array of applications – attributes that are high up on every warehouse or distribution centre manager’s checklist when evaluating and selecting materials handling equipment.

ATLAS COPCO SUPPORTS SOUTH AFRICAN ROBOT COMPETITION TEAM The rise of digitalisation and automation is amplifying the keen focus towards innovations such as robotics. When Atlas Copco became aware that Hoërskool Waterkloof ´s robotic team, known as Fifth Order, was looking for assistance to compete at the First Tech Challenge (FTC) in the USA in April, the company came to the fore in support of the learners.

INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION FTC is an international competition, which sees students from grade seven to 12 work in teams to design, build, and program and operate a robot that will contend in a head-tohead challenge in an alliance format. The programme aims to develop

learners’ science, technology, engineering and mathematics skills as well as enable them to practice engineering principles under adult guidance and mentorship. In order to participate in the competition the teams must raise funds, build a robot, learn Java programming and promote the competition and their team within local communities. ‘Atlas Copco is always eager to assist communities and encourage an interest in mathematics and science amongst learners, so what better way to do this than to support a team from South Africa to represent us at the international FTC competition,’ states Wendy Buffa-Pace, group human resources manager at Atlas Copco. ‘We sponsored branded Atlas Copco The Fifth Order with its robot Phoenix

hoodies, caps and t-shirts for the Fifth Order team.’ Every year since 2011, Hoërskool Waterkloof has entered two teams into the local First Tech Challenge.

REMEMBER THE NAME The founding team chose their name after the First Order from Star Wars and used a TIE fighter as the team logo; both have remained with the team till this day. Aged between fourteen and sixteen, the current team includes Stephan de Villiers, Eben Steenekamp, Francois Delport, Juan Oosthuizen, Tianette Booysen, Marco Terblanche, Joshua Harmse, two coaches and a mentor. When the FTC challenge for the season was released in October 2018 Fifth Order began with their preparation, designing and building their robot ‘Phoenix’, programming it within Java using the LinearOpMode. The 2019 competition saw 160 teams from all over the world divided into two divisions - Edison and Ochoa - to battle for the coveted title. The Fifth Order team finished 37 out of 80 in the Ochoa division. This is a great result considering this was Fifth Order’s debut at this competition. ‘Atlas Copco is extremely proud of Fifth Order for their dedication and exceptional robotics capabilities. It is not about winning or losing but rather that this team of intelligent teenagers has flown the South African flag high and paved the way for other learners who may also see their future in robotics,’ concludes Buffa-Pace.

REPUTABLE SUPPLIERS Today, Bosch Ulwazi provides a range of technical skills solutions to public and corporate client organisations that employ graduate engineers, technologists and project managers who are candidates for professional registration. Professional registration is a key milestone that prepares young graduates for leadership, or even branching out into their own enterprise. Bosch Ulwazi has successfully ventured into establishment and development of emerging enterprises into reputable suppliers to the built environment. ‘A critical part of Bosch Ulwazi’s

operations is to identify, mentor and develop black-owned businesses, to support a client’s supplier and enterprise development goals,’ explains Bosch Ulwazi’s managing director, Balan Govender. ‘In partnership with leading organisations, including state owned enterprises, Bosch Ulwazi plays a key role in the development of small, medium and micro-sized enterprises (SMME’s). Our highly-skilled team provides guidance on project and operations management, skills development and the planning and implementation of expansion strategies, in compliance with corporate governance. ‘To date, we have developed 78 emerging enterprises in South Africa, which are now profitable and sustainable organisations. In fact, a few of our beneficiaries now have annual turnovers close to R50-million. We are proud that every one of our clients has received maximum points in the enterprise and supplier development categories of the BEE scorecard, in line with the Government Gazette Codes of Good Practice. ‘As we celebrate a decade in business, we

look forward to seeing SMMEs increase their number of employees, boost turnover, become ISO compliant and ultimately have access to procurement opportunities within the supply chain of sponsoring companies.’

LOOKING AHEAD Since the introduction of the EIT programme in 2010, graduates have worked on Group projects in South Africa, Brazil, India, Barbados, Tanzania, Swaziland, China, Oman and Kenya. Looking ahead, the company plans to expand its services to the Eastern and Western Cape and hopes to establish an ‘incubator’ in KZN to assist emerging enterprises. Bosch Ulwazi also provides mentoring for business owners at a higher level than that provided to SMMEs.

THE LIMITATIONS OF SINGLE DENSITY SOLES Previously those working in extreme and hazardous conditions relied on footwear comprising of either a single density Vulcanised Rubber sole, Nitrile Rubber sole or a dual density Polyurethane/Rubber sole (PU/Rubber). While single density rubber soles provide the wearer with the necessary protection in these harsh conditions, they cause discomfort due to their heavy nature and lack of a midsole. PU/Rubber soles have answered the demand for a lighter boot with improved comfort through the inclusion of Polyurethane in the mid-sole. This has simultaneously compromised the durability of the product in the face of extreme environments. Gerbrands adds: ‘The challenge for us was to find a way to bring together the benefits offered by both these soling technologies whilst eliminating their shortcomings.

The DCR Marble boot

This resulted in the development of a new range of safety footwear that demonstrates our leadership in continuous improvement and technological advancements.

DIRECT INJECTION DCR is an innovative soling technology that utilises two different layers of rubber where the soles are directly injected onto the uppers for a superior bond, increasing the longevity of the product. By removing Polyurethane from the PU/ Rubber product offering and replacing it with lightweight rubber, Bova has eliminated the destructive effects caused by hydrolysis in the face of fluctuating temperatures and damp, harsh conditions. This increases its durability to the level of Nitrile Rubber sole footwear whilst maintaining the comfort dual density soling products offer. ‘Due to the complexity of the sole injection, this technology is only available through a handful of manufacturers around the world and, until now, has not been manufactured on the African continent, resulting in an imported boot with an expensive price tag,’ Gerbrands says.

THE BENEFITS OF DCR TECHNOLOGY DCR soling technology offers a variety of benefits, including 300° C direct and radiant heat resistance, a 100 percent waterproof sole, resistance to acids, oils and chemicals,

The DCR Basalt boot

Peter Gerbrands group marketing manager at BBF Safety Group superior slip resistance, enhanced penetration resistance, superior abrasion resistance and shock absorbency on impact. The launch phase of the DCR Footwear consists of: • a 6-inch boot • two 8-inch boots • a shoe • a Chelsea boot. The second phase will include specialist boots for extreme risk associated with specialist applications.

DCR Footwear is specifically targeted at those who work in extreme environments such as tarmac and asphalt, mining, oil and gas, heavy construction and engineering. ‘As the leading manufacturer of safety footwear in Africa it is our responsibility to constantly explore the products we release into the market and ask if this is the best we can offer our wearers. As technology evolves it is our job to update our products to reflect the latest in safety footwear engineering, in line with market requirements and costs,’ Gerbrands concludes. Lock in the good guys

16.04.19 13:41

Traditionally, padlocks have been linked to securing possessions and locking out the bad guys who want to steal them, however, Master Lock Safety Padlocks and accessories are designed to lock in the good guys who look after these possessions. Downtime of machines means a loss of income for the operation, so timeous maintenance and speedy repairs are nonnegotiable.

THE GOOD GUYS The good guys are the technicians and engineers who ensure machinery continues to function. These technicians are also a cost to the operation, however, they cannot be depreciated or written off after a few years. Their safety and wellbeing during shutdowns needs to be guaranteed at all times and management is legally compelled to ensure their safety.

CHEAP COULD TURN OUT TO BE EXPENSIVE

HELP LOCK IN YOUR GOOD GUYS

Cost saving on sub-standard lockout and tagout devices and equipment could turn out to be expensive as any weak link in lockout and tagout could not only result in equipment damage but in injury or death. Quality lockout and tagout equipment does initially cost more but the potential savings are enormous.

Master Lock is the world leader in lockout and tagout equipment and accessories. A choice of Zenex thermoplastic as well as aluminium lockout padlocks are available as well as lockout accessories to safely lockout all energy sources of equipment. Master Lock can help you lock in your good guys.

Good debt, bad debt, no debt? Very few South Africans can live debt-free, and utilising debt facilities like home and car loans are not necessarily poor financial decisions. However, there’s a reason it’s called a debt spiral. And millions of South Africans are struggling to stay out of that spiral.

WE TEST-DRIVE THE MAS

he most common metric used by monetary policymakers like the South African Reserve Bank to assess the indebtedness of South African consumers is the household debt-togross income ratio, which stood at 71.9% through 2018. This figure remained unchanged from a year before, some way off an all-time high of 86.4% in 2008, before the global financial meltdown. It is above the long-term average since 1969, which is 57.9%. By comparison with especially developed countries, South Africa’s debt-to-gross income ratio is relatively low, with consumers in the Netherlands wielding an astonishing 209% of debt-to-gross income. So just how indebted are South African consumers and is this worth worrying about? The old aphorism that there are lies, damned lies and statistics is probably worth repeating here because the cost of living – rising fast as the economy struggles to absorb Eskom’s balance sheet woes – is not reflected in the number above, and neither is sluggish wage growth in a stuttering economy. The makeup of this debt is also not reflected, which means a rise in unsecured lending at higher interest rates, which can pressurise consumers’ cash flow, is also not reflected. Another aspect to consider is that debt metrics have typically only measured bank-originated debt, which means both formal sector credit from non-bank lenders and the informal lending sector are not fully taken into account when compiling these figures. The gap in measurement is narrowing for lenders who access credit bureau data to make lending decisions. Although, according to Experian South Africa’s chief data officer, David Coleman, most of the data credit bureaus like Experian receive comes from the South African Consumer Risk and Reporting Association. “That association consists of banks, telcos, insurers, retailers and financial services companies, so we have a wide network of providers who send us this information. For two years we’ve been working to get new credit providers onto the database in a standardised format, once they’re registered with the National Credit Regulator.” According to Coleman, the latest quarterly consumer default index shows 14.3m South African consumers who hold credit cards, personal loans, vehicle loans and home loans hold R1.56tr in outstanding debt as of December 2018.

EHRENBERG ENGINEERING | Contact: Inge Glaner | JHB Tel: 011 493 6280 | Fax: 011 493 1677 | sales@ehrenberg.co.za

The family of hard rockers Ehrenberg Engineering presents its specialised ‘Rocker Family’, a range of products designed to save you time and effort in materials handling, whether you’re in the manufacturing, beverage, canning, building, transport or agricultural business. The Rocker Bin, Rocker Barrow, Rocker Pallet — and the newly introduced Rocker Tip Trailer — are manufactured locally by Ehrenberg Engineering to ensure workers enjoy maximum comfort, safety and flexibility in their working environments. Needing no hydraulic attachments, each variant has its own unique ability enabling it to handle a wide variety of materials. The Rocker Bin, with its steady tipping ability (brought about by disengaging the locking mechanism), allows you to dump or unload fast and efficiently. Easily manoeuvrable, forks can slide securely into the ‘shoes’ of the bins, whether empty or loaded. Once emptied, the bin rocks back into its original position by the backward tilt of the fork hoist and is then automatically locked. The forklift driver therefore does not need to leave his seat, thus saving time and effort. These bins come in various sizes with different accessories and attachments. The Turbo Rocker bin, for example, comes with an airtight lid and turbo industrial vacuum cleaner, giving it numerous cleaning and pneumatic filling applications.

Available in 6 sizes

The simple foot release allows the operator to tip without effort. The Rocker Tip Trailer is designed for the fast and efficient transportation ofgoods. A load of 1.4 cubic meters can be off-loaded by one person in seconds. Any suitable tow vehicle can be used.

New flagship MH11 with app control Ledlenser has supplemened its outdoor series and introduced a new flagship with the MH11, which for the first time will be controlled using the Ledlenser Connect app.

T

he headlamp is positioned at the high end of the product range and, thanks to the app, offers a whole range of new functions. These include the ability to set up individual profiles as well as functions such as timer, interval and SOS distress signal.

LIGHT UP THE NIGHT With up to 1000 lumen in Boost mode and 750 lumen in Power mode, the Ledlenser M11 provides considerable light intensity. An RGB LED also provides light in red, green or blue making the MH11 an individual all-round talent capable of satisfying the highest demands. The MH11 is the first fully customisable headlamp made by the Solingen-based light specialist Ledlenser. With the Ledlenser Connect app, the user has a range of new functions at his or her disposal. Users can add up to six functions of the lamp to their individual profiles which, after transfer from the app to the lamp, can be selected at the touch of a button. Up to six profiles can be set up fixing light intensity, light colour as well as additional functions such as Optisense. Users therefore have the opportunity to move between fixed settings depending on activity.

ALL IN GOOD TIME The timer function has been redeveloped by Ledlenser and represents a milestone in the use of headlamps. Using Ledlenser Connect, time intervals can be pre-set in which the light is switched on and off.

26

INDUSTRIAL BUYER MAY/JUNE 2019

Customisable setting options such as slow-dim mean the MH11 can also replace the alarm clock, gently waking up the user with a gradually increasing intensity of light. Users who like to read before bed can use the function to turn the light off after a certain time - ideal for battery-saving use when camping. The app can also be used to define time intervals indicated by the MH11 by blinking. The function can be used for interval training using light signals or for indicating the lapse of a defined time period.

SOS The SOS distress signal provides support in emergencies and is made through the lamp after activation in the app.

The internationally recognised light signal indicates the need for help and assistance only few people know the right light sequence.

ESTABLISHED TECHNOLOGIES FOR BEST LIGHT QUALITY Alongside the new features, MH11 also includes the established core technologies for which Ledlenser lamps have become known. The lens - as in various Ledlenser headlamps - can be smoothly focused and can therefore be adjusted for various uses. The Optisense technology recognises ambient lighting and adjusts the light intensity of the MH11 accordingly in order to avoid glare and dazzling. For even greater flexibility, the headlamp is easily detachable and can be used as a handheld flashlight. Use of the headband allows the lamp to be elevated as required. In Power mode, the MH11 produces a light intensity of 750 lumen with a range of up to 300m with a battery lifetime of over four hours. With a light intensity of 300 lumen and range of 200m, the battery has sufficient power for eight hours, in the Low Power mode, the battery can even last 100 hours. The Power Boost mode is intended for short term use. In this mode, the lamp operates at an intensity of 1000 lumen. The Ledlenser MH11 is available locally through Awesome Tools. The prefabricated Roading Solution BRP Roading Solutions are a unique range of prefabricated, bitumen rubber-bound materials for sealing, waterproofing, maintenance and traffic calming.

B

RP Roading Solutions is manufactured by Gauteng-based company AJ Broom Road Products. The company has a reputation for exceeding users’ expectations and a 25 year history of providing long lasting and economical solutions for the road owner.

THE HISTORY OF BRP ROAD PATCH In the mid 1980s the shortcomings of the available processes and materials were drivers for the development of the carpet tile-like bitumen rubber-bound material. It had to be offered in a range of aggregate sizes to match or create a change in texture. The BRP Road Patch contains the cost and use of raw materials as it does not require the area to be enlarged for the process of compaction and asphalt repair to be undertaken and completed. BRP Roading Solutions provides

28

immediate access to the site of installation with no curing time necessary.

JOB OPPORTUNITIES BRP Roading Solutions creates job opportunities by permitting entrepreneurs to access the industry without the financial capital other methods require. The solution is applied at ambient temperature and can be rolled with a vehicle or even water-filled or a lawn roller.

PROTECT YOUR WORK AREA With BRP Roading Solutions you can protect areas such as schools, clinics, hospitals, shopping centres, housing complexes, mines and municipal areas. It is an effective alternative to asphalt traffic calming solutions. You can also seal off areas such as crocodile cracking, which would negate the need to dig out.

Rubber bitumen is known in the industry as ‘the ultimate seal’ as it does not oxidise over its lifespan.

Sika assists in installation of new reservoir in Gauteng

A high performance joint sealing system supplied by Sika was used in the development of a new reservoir in Kempton Park, Gauteng, as a means of supplementing the region‘s current water supply infrastructure.

F

ull on-site support was undertaken by Sika technical sales consultant, Jaun Roe van Wyk, and the main contractor, WK Construction, was advised about product performance, correct application methods, and technical data. The development of the new reservoir was approved by Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality and the project scope included considerable work to the walls and columns for both construction and expansion joints, as well as strengthening of the reservoir floor joints. The internal joints of the reservoir also underwent a waterproofing exercise to prevent the unit from leaking.

WATERPROOFING Con-Solve Civils was the sub-contractor and applicator of our Combiflex System, and specified Sika’s acclaimed Sikadur-Combiflex SG Bandage System to seal the wall and floor

joints in the final stages of the project. This is a high performance joint sealing system consisting of a flexible Polyolefin waterproofing tape and Sikadur epoxy adhesive, which was Sikadur-31 DW in this case. The SikadurCombiflex SG bandage System is employed primarily in the construction of water-retaining structures and reservoirs.

OVERCOMING CHALLENGES

The construction of the new Kempton Park reservoir

On-site challenges included time constraints as a result of usual construction related pressures in urban environments. Nonetheless, the installation went smoothly and the project was completed in September 2018.

PRINTING, CODING & MARKING

The five benefits of digital label printing In March this year Pyrotec PackMedia announced a ground breaking first for Africa – the purchase of a Durst Tau 330 RSC eight-colour digital label press. These are the benefits of digital label printing.

FAST TURNAROUND TIMES Unlike flexographic printing, digital printing doesn’t require plates. And, because set-up time is significantly reduced, this means customers receive their orders faster.

ATTENTION-GRABBING HIGH QUALITY Because brand owners are constantly working to ensure their products have the most shelf shout possible, a product label carrying high-quality graphics and colours is essential. ‘Durst offers the most advanced technology, the best print resolution (1200 x 1200dpi), printing speed (78m/min), and printhead design (continuous ink circulation) of all the presses we investigated,’ Timothy Beattie, Pyrotec PackMedia’s general manager explains. The Durst Tau 330 RSC digital label press offers eight colours, achieving between 95 percent and 98 percent of the Pantone colour gamut, and, when the same substrate is used for consecutive jobs, set-up time and material waste are almost zero.

SHORT-RUNS For digital printing, the DTP department prepares the electronic file to be printed. Consistency between reprints is guaranteed because there’s no opportunity for human and set-up errors.

COST SAVING Customers order only the number of labels they need, saving on storage space and ensuring that changes to on-pack product information can be made quickly and with very little waste.

DESIGN FLEXIBILITY Digital presses offer great flexibility, especially for variable or personalised data printing. For customers who need to change

text, graphics or images, digital technology enables operators to make changes on-thefly without losing valuable time. This is also very beneficial for on-pack changes that need to be made quickly, or for promotional campaigns or seasonal changes. ‘We expect the Durst Tau 330 RSC highspeed label press to increase efficiencies and enhance our product and service offerings. With this latest digital technology, we can enter entirely new markets because we can print on a variety of materials including unsupported film,’ Beattie concludes.
