My own company, New Media, adopted a work from home policy early on, in anticipation of the lockdown, which has worked surprisingly well. WELDING INSTITUTE TACKLES UNEMPLOYMENT IN THE SA MANUFACTURING SECTOR The Southern African Institute of Welding (SAIW) is tackling unemployment in South Africa head on by offering welding, inspection and NDT training courses to internationally approved standards. The South African industrial and manufacturing sector is grappling with one of the toughest economic eras in living memory, made even more challenging by the tension between a rampant unemployment figure of 29 percent (Stats SA) and a shortage of relevant world-class technical skills. In light of this, SAIW has a brand new approach that also offers its members an ongoing return on their investment.
KEY DRIVERS OF ECONOMIC GROWTH SAIW executive director John Tarboton says: ‘Welding and weld related technologies are key enablers in the manufacturing space, particularly in metals fabrication and skilled and competent people are vital for the promotion of these key drivers of economic growth and employment.
‘As SAIW we have therefore identified four service areas namely training; technology; certification; and member marketing that we believe all contribute towards our vision: to promote world-class excellence in welding, NDT and allied technologies; and our broader mission of championing the development and upliftment of the national welding capability.’ With skills development training and personnel qualification courses as the starting point – the Institute offers welding, inspection and NDT training courses to internationally approved standards, much of which is required to remain certified to ISO 3834.
TECHNOLOGY IN TRAINING SAIW is also revamping its approach to the use of technology in its training programmes, to improve accessibility and reduce costs. ‘For example, we have recently conducted trials by providing live online lectures in the form of webinars. This allows the possibility of interaction with the lecturers whilst not having to
physically attend the courses,’ reports Tarboton. In addition, the Institute is launching a monthly webinars series that will contribute towards the accumulation of professional development points (CPD) for those who need them. These will be free to members, who log in at the appropriate time to access the session. Certification forms the third leg of the renewed offering and SAIW is offering company members discounts on certifications and recertifications such as ISO 3834.
MARKETING On the marketing side, SAIW aims to promote the capabilities of its members to the broader industry, nationally and internationally. Tarboton stresses; ‘Being a member of the Institute means something with regard to credibility and we are encouraging members to take advantage: for companies by using our ‘Member of SAIW’ logo for example, or by individuals taking advantage of MSAIW branding for recognition.

There is also a drive to foster wider collaboration across the industry and SAIW is talking to other industry associations, such as AFSA, SASSDA and SAISC. ‘We aim to build strong alliances, which we believe is at the heart of making our Institutes and associations, as well as the businesses of our members, more robust and sustainable,’ says Tarboton He adds: ‘We are on a strong and determined drive for greater member involvement. For fabricators looking to reduce rework and improve productivity, we see partnering with the Institute and, together, seeking to improve our processes and performance, as the simplest path to longterm success.’

MULTOTEC INSTALLS
GREEN ENERGY AT SPARTAN PLANT
The excess electricity generated over weekends is channelled back into the main grid by Multotec at no cost to the municipality Multotec has installed renewable power at one of its facilities in Spartan, Gauteng. This is the company’s bid to make a sustainable contribution to easing South Africa’s energy crisis. The substantial investment saw 684 photovoltaic (PV) solar panels being installed in November 2019, creating a 223 kW generating system. It serves Multotec’s most energyintensive works – its injection moulding facility – providing almost 20 percent of the daily electricity demand. According to Multotec’s group manufacturing executive, Werner Stessl, the impact of the new system is not just economic. It will also have important environmental benefits in terms of the country’s climate change targets. 684 Photovoltaic (PV) solar panels were installed at Multotec providing
almost 20 percent of the daily electricity demand. ‘Multotec is committed to environmental sustainability and we value the fact that this installation is likely to save about 30 000 kg of carbon dioxide emissions each month,’ says Stessl. ‘This is the equivalent of planting about 100 trees a month.’ He says the organisation has been carefully monitoring its rising electricity costs and sought a responsible solution that would leverage the latest renewable energy technology. In collaboration with solar power experts Energy Capital, a thorough investigation of its energy consumption and available opportunities was conducted. ‘After months of planning and research, it was established that we could run a battery-less system which would valuably augment our current municipal supply,’ he says. ‘After some structural engineering to
prepare our designated roof areas, the panels were efficiently placed and linked up by mid-November last year.’ To date, the system has more than met Multotec’s expectations, which were contractually guaranteed by the service provider. The detailed up-front investigation showed that the installation could be repaid by energy savings within about four and a half years. System performance – right down to the electricity generated by each PV solar panel – can be monitored daily on an online dashboard, he says. The local municipality has also begun to benefit from Multotec’s initiative, as there is usually ‘overflow’ power generated at weekends which the moulding facility does not need. This excess electricity is now channelled back into the main grid by Multotec, at no cost to the municipality.

INDUSTRI TOOLS & EQUIPMENT ADDS WELDING SAFETY CURTAIN TO ITS RANGE INDUSTRI Tools & Equipment’s manufacturing division offers the production of a wide range of custom-made industrial materials, including welding screens, strip curtains, fire blankets, spill mats, tarpaulins and dam liners. ‘Safety regulations – which require the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and other personnel protection during the operation of arc welding equipment - have been introduced to protect workers in or near welding areas,’ explains Lynette Badenhorst, product manager – Manufacturing, INDUSTRI Tools & Equipment, part of the Engineering Solutions Group (ESG) of Invicta Holdings Limited. ‘INDUSTRI’s locallymanufactured welding safety curtain and screen products are used in conjunction with other protective measures, like ventilation, cooling fans and respirators, to keep everyone in the environment safe. ‘The company’s flame-resistant welding curtains and screens form a safe enclosure, that withstands extreme heat exposure and limits the movement of welding chemicals and fumes, to protect welders and others in the facility, from the harmful effects of flashes, radiation and other debris, during welding work. Exposure to ultraviolet and infra-red radiation can lead to skin burns and severe eye disorders, such as ‘arc eye’ or ‘welders flash’ – a painful inflammation of the cornea, that may affect vision.’ INDUSTRI welding screens are manufactured using a laminate vinyl material with high tensile strength and the seams of the safety curtains are electronically-welded for durability and tear-resistance. These systems, which have been designed for quick installation, easy access and simple re-arrangement, can also be positioned to create a sound barrier that contains the noise produced on-site during welding operations. These durable welding screens are suitable for use in every facility with a welding process, including engineering, workshops, mines, oil and gas, manufacturing and trade training centres.

WAITEX GHANA POSTPONED UNTIL 2021 Specialised Exhibitions and Afrocet, organisers of the West African Industrial Trade Exhibition (WAITEX) have announced that the show, due to take place in Accra in Ghana from 21-23 April 2020, has been postponed until 20-22 April 2021. ‘In light of the rapid spread globally of the coronavirus pandemic and the announcement of a range of interventions by the South African presidency we have taken the decision to postpone Waitex 2020,’ says Gary Corin, managing director of Specialised Exhibitions. ‘A large contingent of South African companies was booked to exhibit at the mining, automation, packaging and industrial trade show in Ghana alongside many local Ghanaian companies. In support of the extensive efforts by both countries’ Governments to contain the spread of the coronavirus, we are postponing the show until 20-22 April 2021.’ ‘We support the South African and Ghanaian Authorities’ decision to implement social distancing measures and temporarily prohibit large gatherings of people. We are committed to protecting all stakeholder health, both Ghanaian and South African,’ says Corin. ‘This is an unprecedented and fluid situation. Currently, all other exhibitions in our portfolio are scheduled to go ahead. We will keep all stakeholders informed of changes. Specialised Exhibitions and the Montgomery Group will respond to health and travel procedures in place locally and globally, as advised by governments and the World Health Organisation,’ Corin concluded. SECUREX SA POSTPONED TO AUGUST
Specialised Exhibitions has decided to reschedule its Securex South Africa, A-OSH Expo and Facilities Management Expo trade shows to 18 to 20 August 2020 following developments in the COVID-19 national state of disaster The three co-located shows will still take place at Gallagher Convention Centre in Johannesburg. ‘Measures declared by the President included a ‘ban on mass gatherings of more than 100 people’, as well as social distancing,’ says Gary Corin, managing director of Specialised Exhibitions. ‘We fully support this pronouncement, and in consideration of the safety and wellbeing of our exhibitors, suppliers and visitors – and indeed the industry as a whole – as top priority, have decided to postpone the expos to later in the year. ‘Specialised Exhibitions looks forward to hosting a strong showing for the safety, security and built environments later this year, and appreciates the support of all stakeholders.’ Queries around Securex, A-OSH EXPO and Facilities Management Expo can be directed to svens@specialised.com.

SIKASIL BRIDGE TAPE-300 USED IN V&A WATERFRONT SKYLIGHT REVAMP Sika was a chosen supplier for the revamp of the glass skylights at V&A Waterfront in Cape Town. The management team of the waterfront identified the leakage of the skylights as a major problem that needed to be solved as they had leaked for some time and were in urgent need of repair. Consulting engineers David Elston & Associates assisted in selecting an appropriate remedy. The team decided to employ a method of over-sealing the glazing joints, offering advantages of less labour and less time to complete. This 4600 linear metre project was made possible by using Sika products. In July 2019 the revamp of the glass skylights began. The contractor, Skysite Rope Access offered the adopted solution of leaving the original sealant in the joints and over-sealing with Sikasil bridge tape300 a preformed silicone profile tape with Sikahyflex 305 AP weather sealant to seal all existing joints, making them 100 percent waterproof as silicone bonds to silicone. A reason for the use of the Sikasil bridge tape -300 was that it is an ultra-low modules silicone tape that presented an economical alternative to cutting out existing failed joints. Some advantages of this tape include; high tear resistance, resistance to corrosion and UV resistance. Sika offered assistance by initiating training to ensure the job was done in the correct manner as other Sika products were used such as Sika Activator 205 as an adhesion promoter and Sika cleanglass to ensure all glass surfaces were left meticulously clean. This project was unique for Sika as it was the first of its kind in the country using the Sikasil Bridge Tape-300. Having the V&A waterfront as a reference is a fantastic start for this new Sika product. With the Sika products and methods used on these skylights there is no doubt the V&A waterfront can retain its well renowned reputation.

NEWS SA STARTUP MAKES TOP 100 LIST OF MOST PROMISING AI COMPANIES IN THE WORLD CB Insights has named South African company DataProphet, a leader in AI that enables manufacturers to step towards autonomous manufacturing, to the fourth annual AI 100 ranking, showcasing the 100 most promising private artificial intelligence companies in the world. ‘It’s been remarkable to see the success of the companies named to the Artificial Intelligence 100 over the last four years. This could mean major losses in your business if you don’t have contingencies in place. Industrial Buyer caught up with Hire-It sales director Richard Fraser to shed light on the best alternative power solutions to use in your business.
Q
: Please explain how each alternative power solution works and which is the best option for a small manufacturing operation? A: There are a wide variety of backup options ranging from different types of generators, solar systems and backup inverter battery systems, in a number of different types and quality levels. This is why it can be difficult for end users to understand the different options and the pros and cons. The most important information is to understand the application. As a general rule, battery inverter systems are handy for backing up lights and computers for a home or office environment for a number of hours depending on the size. This is good for the office worker because
it means business can carry on during load shedding, and with any luck the batteries will last until the power comes back up. Battery and solar systems are not the correct option for running machinery like a manufacturing operation. To backup a manufacturing operation, a Diesel backup generator will be best. This is mainly because batteries are not suited to running machinery or heat elements, they get used up too quickly. Q: On average, how long can a generator run? A: There are many different sizes of machine and fuel tanks, but most of our backup units, irrespective of the size, are designed to run for six to eight hours on close to a full load.

If the load on a machine is less, then the fuel consumption will be less, and therefore the run time can be higher. We recommend getting a jerry can or plastic petrol canister (available at most hardware stores), so that the machine can be filled up in the event of a very long outage. This is one of the major advantages of a generator over a battery system, the run time is much longer, and machines can be filled up with fuel. Also, in comparison to battery systems, diesel generators are far better suited to running machinery and mechanical applications. I must also mention as a matter of safety, never put petrol or diesel into a machine that is running, always switch it off when refuelling.
NEW EQUIPMENT SHOWCASE Q: What is the return on investment for alternative power? A: There are three categories of alternative power: • Solar Hybrid systems, which commonly involve businesses using a combination of any or all of Eskom power, solar power, battery power as well as a generator for when all of the former aren’t able to supply enough power. The initial outlay for these types of systems is high, but the theory is that the savings made on power usage will pay back in anywhere between 5 and 15 years. There is also currently a question mark over whether Eskom will allow users to add into the grid and even make money out of creating power, or get penalised for it. Solar hybrid systems are the greenest option for businesses and make sense for office backup or shops which have fairly modest power requirements compared to manufacturing and industry. In my opinion, Solar hybrid technology is not quite at the right level or price point to be viable for the majority of the market, it is quite expensive, and also batteries need to be replaced, which means more costs down the line. Lead Acid batteries have a life span of three to five years. The new Lithium Ion batteries have nearly double the life expectancy but are triple the price roughly speaking. However, I believe that in time as demand increases and pricing improves, the solar hybrid system will become more viable. • Inverter Battery / UPS backup: This is a good option for small offices or homes that just want to run lights, computers and internet to keep production going during outages. Systems that can give two to four hours backup for a small office are fairly well priced. Things to bear in mind are that once the batteries run out, say for an extended blackout, then you are back in the dark. Also, batteries will need to be replaced in three to five years, so bear in mind further costs down the road. Other advantages of the battery inverter are that they are silent, unlike a generator option. Also, the power keeps going through the batteries continuously, so you don’t have the risk of surges or shut

Again, the auto start sets are more expensive. Using Eskom power is always the cheapest option, but businesses need to ask if production downtime justifies the expense of a generator. Q: What is the future of alternative power in South Africa? A: In my opinion the problems of Eskom will take a number of years to resolve. How to protect employees from coronavirus in the workplace
The novel coronavirus has had an unprecedented impact on everything from the world economy to how we shop for groceries. South African businesses are having to explore work from home options, if possible, or employ protection measures onsite if not. Here are some ways you can ensure the health and safety of your employees during this period.

ccording to the National Employers’ Association of South Africa (NEASA): ‘In terms of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, an employer is obligated to take any reasonable action to ensure a safe and healthy working environment. These steps include elimination or mitigation of any hazard or potential hazard, providing instructions, information, training and supervision as well as the enforcement of such measures as may be required in the interest of health and safety.’
HYGIENE IN THE WORKPLACE NEASA has developed a generic policy for dealing with COVID-19 in the workplace. It highlights the following points for enforcing hygiene in the workplace: • Employees must ensure that they make use of the hand soap and hand sanitisers available, when they enter the workplace and after teatime, lunch time or use of toilet facilities. • Use a tissue or a bent elbow when you have to sneeze or cough and immediately wash your hands thereafter for 20 seconds. • Do not shake hands or give hugs, limit physical contact and maintain a distance of 2m as much as reasonably possible, and immediately wash your hands should it be unavoidable. • Keep a clean and sanitary work environment i.e. wipe your workstation, phone, door handles and taps regularly on a daily basis. • Refrain from touching your eyes, nose and mouth.
PROTECT YOUR EMPLOYEES Medical professional and allergy specialist Aneta Ivanova gives the following tips for protecting employees from the virus in the workplace: • Provide protective wear at work to prepare for worst case scenario. • Encourage regular handwashing and sanitiser – reinforce this with signs placed around the building and especially in public areas. • Comply with national infection control standards. • Ensure that your company has a contingency plan in place to help minimise the spread of coronavirus – considering each individual employee and their role. • Minimise or, if possible, totally avoid the use of aircon which is known to spread viruses. • Cancel or postpone any nonurgent overseas business trips, large conferences or large meetings (especially to heavily affected areas). • Give time off to any employees who are displaying even

the slightest symptoms of coronavirus. Brief staff and encourage them to be vigilant about symptoms – considering whether they have been in contact with somebody who may have the virus (especially if recently returning from a holiday). Discourage staff from using public transport if the situation worsens – business owners could organise alternative transport methods for staff or arrange remote working where possible. Regularly disinfect door handles/surfaces as these are known to be a way of spreading the virus. Minimise employee contact with any objects on which coronavirus could survive – including things like bank notes (take card payments where possible).
IMPACT ON BUSINESS One thing’s for sure, the global spread of COVID-19 is having a huge impact on business. We have to take proactive steps to ensure the stability of business in times of crisis both now and in the future.

Manufacturers need to prioritise water security A lack of a consistent and reliable water supply is having a big impact on the growth and profitability of many businesses in South Africa, particularly those in the manufacturing sector. ccording to the World Bank, with roughly 663 million people lacking access to drinking water and 2.4 billion people worldwide still lacking access to sanitation, water security is still considered to be one of the biggest global risks. In South Africa, water security has become an ever-increasing business objective and a concern for every citizen, as our climate continues to change and continued water supply challenges at municipal level become ever more evident.

DEVELOPING ECONOMY This has been driven home by the fact that South Africa has a growing population and a developing economy currently under financial pressure, and these factors can only increase the pressure on the country’s water supply system, which, in turn, is already suffering from years of neglect and poor maintenance. As a result, many businesses should be – and some already are – looking at creating their own water supply to avoid disaster and take control of their own destiny, rather than rely on the traditional water authorities to supply water.
ROI IN WATER STORAGE SOLUTIONS Additionally, the cost of water has increased drastically and will continue to do so, making the collection of rain water and the harvesting of water from unused resources just a couple of examples of where the return on the investment in water storage solutions can start to make economic sense, while providing continued supply that may otherwise not be guaranteed. Nearly all industries require water, even if it is just drinking water for employees. Liquid storage tanks are a safe way to store water and if one looks at the water provision process, tanks are a common occurrence in any system, from extraction from rivers right through to storing wastewater for recycling. Further, process water – water that cannot be classified as drinking water and is used in connection with technical plants and
processes in production companies – is an important ingredient in many products, with water also often used in the cooling process of many manufacturing plants, such as the cooling of furnaces in steel manufacturing. It is here, within non-food manufacturing environments that mitigating water security issues is crucial and becomes a safety concern. In these areas it is highly likely that a furnace for instance, that does not have sufficient water for cooling could explode, threatening life and property.
WATER SHEDDING Taking that thought a step further, fire is a threat that affects all businesses and it is becoming more common in new developments of both warehousing and residential accommodation that insurers require property owners to provide for and install sprinkler systems and standby water tanks. Throw in the fact that in South Africa we are starting to hear more and more about ‘water shedding’ and you have a scenario that requires responsible businesses to build in contingencies, such as the installation of water tanks, which have the ability to mitigate the risks of low water pressure, water shedding, or even no water being provided through the municipal water system. DUAL HEAD LASER MARKING SOLUTION The patented Telesis Dual-Head Laser systems control two independent marking heads with a single Interface integrated controller. These unique laser marking systems provide several important advantages: It is less expensive and simpler to set up and operate a dual-head system than to set up and synchronise the operation of two separate laser marking systems. A Telesis Dual-Head Laser Marking system requires less space and takes away the limitations of using only one laser. For instance, a two-headed system can mark deeper, longer, and faster on two different types of material and/or on two different sides of a part the same time. One head can immediately backup the other in the case of a head getting damaged or experiencing an operational problem. Telesis Dual-Head Laser Marking Systems can be outfitted with the Vari-Z 3D marking, Auto-Focus, and/or Integrated Vision System (integrated camera) options. The user-friendly Merlin 2H (dual-head) software is compatible with a PC or a laptop, easy to integrate, and can handle .dxf, ai. and .plt files. The Saxon range of sealers are state of the art. Available in stainless steel for the food industry as well as fertilizer and chemicals. No Teflon belts – uses the patented method of ‘hot air’ sealing with less maintenance and down time.
