The latest automation technology developments can be found at the Africa Automation Fair 2021.
If it is at all possible to find a silver lining in a pandemic, we are seeing major disruptions during this time from the rise of remote working to further adoption of automation and digitisation as well as an increased focus on not just physical health of staff but also mental health. Another area which is seeing rapid change due to COVID-19 is sustainability and environmental management. As we’ve seen in the past major hardships beget major change. Loadshedding saw manufacturing plants, mines, corporates and construction sites invest in alternative energy systems such as solar panels and generators. Water scarcity in the Western Cape saw many looking to water R storage solutions. BUYE COVID-19 is forcing us to stay home reducing environmental stress on road networks and G workplaces. SIKA PRODUCTS FORTIFY SALDANHA BRIDGE REVAMP Sika supplied products for the revamp of the road over the Saldanha Bridge in the Western Cape which needed refurbishing due to miscalculations of the top-steel installation when it was initially built. The bridge is one of the most strategically important roadways in the region. The bridge underwent construction in recent years, which facilitated the extension of the road running from Langebaan to Saldanha. This road allows single lane traffic in each direction. The Provincial Administration of the Western Cape had to decide to either rebuild the entire bridge, at an approximate cost of R9 million over a period of six months; or to refurbish the existing bridge, at an estimate of R2 million over a three-week period. They settled on the latter. RHDHV Engineers, together with the main contractors, Power Construction, took this project head on and chose Sika products for the bridge refurbishment. The first step in the repair process, was to cut 1.4km of longitudinal slots into the concrete bridge deck, with concrete cutting equipment. These slots were specifically created to carry nearsurface mounted carbon fibre rods, which would compensate for the missing rebar.
6
At the same diameter, the carbon fibre rods have a tensile strength six times that of structural reinforcing, giving it the ability to carry very heavy loads. As they are near-surface mounted, they can be placed onto trafficked surfaces without being damaged, which is ideal for a roadway of this nature. Sikadur- 30, an adhesive for structural bonding, particularly in external structural strengthening, was used to bond the carbon fibre rods into the slots. The advantages of this high performance adhesive is that: it is easy to mix and easier to apply, requires no priming prior to application, and has high creep resistance under permanent loads, which is critical in structural applications that carry a high volume of loads. The star product of this project was the Sika CarboDur BC-16 carbon fibre rods, designed for structural strengthening of concrete, timber, and masonry builds. The 16mm diameter Sika CarboDur BC-16 Rods have a sanded finish to give added mechanical key. They were flown into South Africa, at minimal cost, due to the exceptionally low weight of the product. The rods were glued into place using Sikadur-30 Epoxy mortar, and trowelled flush with the deck surface. On completion of the near-surface mounted carbon fibre rod application, the
INDUSTRIAL BUYER JULY/AUGUST 2020
subsequent road surfacing could commence. The key elements of Sika CarboDur BC-16 are its resistance to any form of corrosion, it’s incredibly high tensile strength, and its light weight. It’s quite easy to install - no surface preparation is required. It has an improved resistance to fire, due to it being embedded in the concrete surface. It is used to improve the performance and resistance of structures, for increased load carrying capacity, which in this case, is daily. There is no doubt this was the best purpose-product for the specified outcomes. Initially, the Provincial Administration of the Western Cape were not keen on the idea of using this new technology on the bridge. They deemed that it was a repair to a brandnew bridge, and they did not want a “repaired structure”. Sika technical specialists met with the head of the administration to explain the proposed repair would increase the durability of the structure. The latter finally agreeing it would be the best option. The project was successfully completed within a short period and there is no doubt the repairs will stand the test of time.

SKF LAUNCHES NEW MOBILE BEARING ASSIST APP
SKF has developed a new mobile app that simplifies the task of mounting and replacing bearings SKF has developed a new mobile app that simplifies the task of mounting and replacing bearings. SKF Bearing Assist app, developed together with customers, provides detailed mounting instructions for a comprehensive range of SKF bearings. It is suitable for use by all engineering and maintenance teams and will minimise the problems of incorrect mounting, reducing installation time and cost, and helping to extend the operating life of bearings. Bearing Assist also allows engineers to record the work they have carried out, which can improve the way that bearing knowledge is shared across an organisation. “SKF Bearing Assist is a new mobile tool that enables quick, correct and easy mounting,” says Linus Wahlterius, product manager at SKF.
“It’s a tool that can turn new recruits into experts.” The app contains detailed product information, including bearing designation, bearing type (with visuals) and suffix descriptions, as well as dimensions and illustrations. The mounting instructions cover bearings with basic design that are included in the standard assortment. Information such as clearance reduction and drive-up method calculations, and recommendations on lubrication, can save time and effort when fitting bearings. The instantly accessible information helps to improve the efficiency with which bearings can be installed. In addition, maintenance and production engineers can improve their fitting techniques by following the detailed instructions.
Once a bearing has been mounted, this can be recorded in the app with details such as date, specific asset, location and work order. Details of which specific bearing has been mounted can also be added. Results can instantly be exported as a PDF, reducing the time needed to produce a mounting report. Logging these details in such an efficient way helps to improve maintenance collaboration. This can help to improve maintenance planning and ultimately, increase asset reliability. Bearing Assist is available for free download from Apple Store. A quick in-app registration for full functionality including storing and sharing records is required. Log-in details are the same as for ProCollect and other SKF applications.

BI ADHERES TO COVID-19 SAFETY PROTOCOLS AS FULL BRANCH NETWORK REOPENS The easing of the national lockdown to Level 3 has allowed leading supplier Bearings International (BI) to reopen its countrywide branch network under strict coronavirus regulations. In addition, a small percentage of staff have returned to work on a rotational basis, limiting the number of employees on-site so as to minimise the risk. All companies within the Hudaco portfolio, of which BI is one, have developed stringent back-to-work safety protocols that have been implemented across BI’s branch network and maintained stringently. These include workplace risk assessments and adaptation to ensure social distancing, remote working, awareness campaigns around associated risks, cleaning and sanitation protocols and temperature screening of employees, customers and visitors, as well as clearly-defined procedures to deal with the impact in the workplace, as the safety of its employees is BI’s highest priority. “Although back to work, we still operate under strict regulations as per the law. We maintain strict social distancing and have supplied all staff with BI-branded face masks, which we wear all the time,” explains BI Offer marketing manager Victor Strobel. During the hard lockdown, BI was identified as an emergency and breakdown service provider to companies providing essential services such as food and beverage, power generation and water and wastewater.
8
BI has added a good quality hand sanitiser and disinfectant to its range of hand cleaners It identified key people in every branch around the country able to provide this service 24/7, applied for all necessary work and travel permits and provided a full contact list to these customers. In addition, BI used its communication platforms to remind its essential service customers that it remained dedicated to meeting their needs during the initial stages of the lockdown. Strobel explains that BI’s logistics department operates on rotational shifts to ensure risk is always mitigated.

“We can ensure continuity of service delivery to our branch network in the event of someone being infected.” All branches are authorised to deliver product to customers that are operational during Level 3. The branch network can continue to serve customers from anywhere in the country should one or multiple branches be impacted. Customers have also used the lockdown period to carry out essential maintenance on their plant. “Our main challenges have been managing our inventory due to travel constraints, congestion at harbours and long lead times from suppliers but have successfully caught up on the backlog. Other challenges that we have experienced as a company is that access to certain customers has been limited by the lockdown travel restrictions in place,” adds Strobel. As part of its efforts to keep its customers safe during the pandemic and to promote good hygiene practices, BI has added a good-quality sanitiser and disinfectant to its current range of hand cleaners that has been extremely wellaccepted and is doing very well. “We have also seen a huge increase in the demand for our range of Grippaz hand gloves and have increased our stockholding accordingly. We have added a highlyaccurate handheld thermometer to our product range,” Strobel mentions. “As we navigate through these challenging times, I am reminded of how fortunate we are to be part of this strong community that supports each other to accomplish great things. It is the power of this community that will propel us through this crisis to better times,” he concludes.

LOCAL QUALITY DRIVES KWATANI’S EXPORT SUCCESS
A Kwatani screen on site in Canada Quality local design and manufacture have catapulted Gauteng-based Kwatani into the global marketplace with its world class vibrating screens. With an established footprint around Africa, Kwatani’s exports have grown to include 40 countries worldwide in the eight years since it began supplying abroad. “Our success is based on years of local investment – in skills, technology and infrastructure,” says Kim Schoepflin, CEO of Kwatani. “This has given us a very high level of local content, which supports a local supply chain while advancing the expertise on which our economy can grow.” The technical capability that has been developed underpins the performance and reliability of the company’s custom-engineered screens. Its ‘engineered for tonnage’ motto has rung true for the growing base of customers abroad. “As with our local market, we prioritise the support services available where export customers operate,” says Schoepflin. “In fact, we prefer not to supply machines into areas where we have not yet established a support partnership with suitable experts.” In Canada, for instance, Kwatani now has representation in both the eastern and western regions, and its first machine was recently shipped into the Canadian market. The bespoke nature of the company’s screens means that service partners need an appropriate level of technical expertise – and even considerable refurbishment facilities. Kwatani is no stranger to working remotely from customers, Schoepflin notes, serving mines and project houses which are often based in other countries, and even in a different country to the project’s actual location. “Our technology base and use of online communication platforms means that our work frequently transcends borders,” she says. “This also ensures that the COVID-19 pandemic will not put a dampener on our globalisation drive.” Schoepflin highlights the company’s strict adherence to ISO quality systems and procedures, which are a vital component of the technical excellence required when playing on the global stage.

environments. “When using these drainage pipes in a subsoil drainage application, a trench is dimensioned and cut as per the engineer’s design. The trench is then lined with a suitable Fibertex nonwoven polypropylene filter fabric. A 50 mm bedding layer of suitably sized stone chip is placed for the pipe to rest on. The function of the filter fabric (which is folded over with a 150 - 200 mm overlap) is to prevent the migration of fine soil particles into the drainage pipe, that in the long term could lead to silting up of the pipe.” Drainex, Kabelflex and Wastex pipes have a double wall construction, with a corrugated external wall and a smooth inner wall, with a low coefficient of friction. This design combines high ring stiffness (>450kPa), with excellent flow characteristics, allowing for the optimum utilisation of pipe diameter. Drainage slots in Drainex pipes are cut in the depressions of the corrugations to protect the pipe from blockage by drainage aggregate. These pipes are available in diameters of 75 mm, 110 mm and 160 mm, in coils and in 6 m lengths. Push fit couplings and optional profiled sealing rings ensure reliable joining and watertight sealing of the pipefittings.

THYSSENKRUPP TAKES A MULTIDISCIPLINARY APPROACH IN ITS STAND AGAINST COVID-19 As the COVID-19 pandemic tightens its grip, thyssenkrupp Industrial Solutions is assisting customers to maintain operational efficiencies through sustainable service delivery and innovative technologies. “The global economic crisis, as a consequence of the COVID-19 pandemic, has put the drive for efficiency into top gear,” states Philipp Nellessen, CEO of thyssenkrupp Industrial Solutions sub Saharan Africa. “Fundamental to this drive is cutting-edge technology. Through our ongoing investment in people and R&D and our over 200 years of expertise, we are able to develop advanced technologies to assist mining and other industries in achieving maximum operational efficiencies.” The engineering powerhouse has also applied its technology prowess to assist the general public in the fight against the spread of the virus with the development of a Sodium Hypochlorite mobile trailer for spraying disinfectant on the streets in COVID-19 hotspot areas. Two of the company’s leading technologies are solar thermal heat coupled with biomass fired plant solutions for sugar plants (from the boiler to the integrated sugar plant). This technology is new and significant in the market
since operating costs are optimised with low capital investment. Wilfred Barkhuizen, thyssenkrupp Industrial Solutions sub Saharan Africa GM Mining, explains that sugar plants use biomass residue from sugar cane (Bagasse) to produce process steam and electrical power which is primarily used to drive sugar plant machinery with surplus power fed to the power grid. Sugar plants are typically operational for only a portion of the year and the amount of raw material is only sufficient to produce power for roughly six months. Subsequently, high CAPEX equipment (boiler, turbine, generator etc) stand idle for the remainder of the year. Although the South African mining industry was not operational during national lockdown Level 5, critical repairs were still permitted. As an essential service provider, thyssenkrupp has been delivering maintenance and repair as well as rebuild work to local mines. In order to remain operational and continue seamless service delivery to customers, thyssenkrupp has implemented all necessary policies in line with Government COVID-19 regulations. These include possession of all essential services permits and strict entry control protocols for employees, visitors and suppliers at all premises.
Employees are required to attend mandatory training sessions conducted by the OSH department, wear all necessary Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), sanitise regularly and maintain social distancing. A dedicated COVID-19 committee has been set up to assess changing regulations and risks associated with office and site working environments. Wrapping up, an optimistic Nellessen says that he is in no doubt that South Africa/subSaharan Africa will recover. “The people here are incredibly brave and innovative and companies will find their way out of the crisis. We have seen a significant decline in order intake in the last few months, especially in our chemical business with some of our customers having been dealt a double blow - COVID-19 and an unpreceded decline in commodity prices in the oil and gas sector of the global economy. As industry partners, we are here to offer our support. Despite tough times ahead for some industries, the mining sector continues to show growth and here I foresee a restart and a good recovery, depending on mining commodities probably taking anything between three to 12 months to reach previous and required pricing levels.”

SUSTAINABILITY AND ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT
Building for sustai to promote valuabl There is a direct link between the stability of an economy and ongoing development. Even before the devastating impact of COVID-19 South Africa’s construction and property industries were experiencing a lull due to reduced expenditure by government on large scale infrastructure projects as well as uncertainty in the private sector investment markets. Yet Johan Piekaar, regional director, WSP, Structures, Africa believes there could be room for optimism since building for sustainability has become a major driver for investment.
F
indings in a survey from Timetric highlight that growth in the industry forecasted between 2017 and 2021 is expected to be more moderate than the review period for 2012 to 2016. Despite the current economic climate there
are domestic and international investors and developers who continue to forge ahead with projects across South Africa, as they see the great potential and value here. Furthermore, building for sustainability has become the main driver for most investors and developers.

inability continues le returns in SA grow increasingly socially conscious to the importance of resilience and the need to safeguard and manage critical resources in a more sustainable fashion. For instance, each time the country has intermittently experienced load shedding – and particularly since 2008 – this continues to increase social awareness on the importance of secure power, and sparks interest among developers to investigate solar powered rooftop or onsite solutions that could self-power their buildings in the event of grid power interruptions. Likewise, the water shortages – and water restrictions as a result – that many areas across the country have faced in the last 24-months have created a sense of urgency across the country to look at more efficient water management solutions within buildings. This has also opened up opportunities to capture and use rainwater, or to safely recycle and reuse grey water, to meet their essential operational and living needs. It’s no surprise then, that this rising social consciousness, coupled with continuous and growing pressure being placed on the ‘built’ space to address inadequate energy resources, carbon reduction targets and tightening building energy efficiency standards continues to drive sustainable building trends in South Africa. In fact, building for sustainability and climate change mitigation has become integral in the design and construction of buildings in the country.
RESPONSIBLE ENGINEERING The philosophy of building for sustainability is being led by responsible engineering (do what we can without costing too much – show return on investment value) and responsible building (driving this through the supply/value chain). While previously it was thought to be more expensive to make the upfront capital investments to go green, volatility in both the cost and availability of power and water resource, for example, is influencing a mind-set
Solar panels on an industrial building change. Added to this, if we look at the whole lifecycle design of a building; architects, consulting engineers and sustainability consultant teams are constantly coming up with alternative and environmentally suitable building designs to offset the impact of the building on its immediate environment. Therefore, in the long-term, not only are sustainable building design adoptions financially beneficial due to reduced energy consumption, but the use of renewable and

more sustainable energy resources also has the propensity to reduce the carbon emissions associated to these buildings and provide increased resilience to uncertain service delivery. These are all significant value adds to the customer/tenant – and what benefits the customer also benefits the developer/owner – as savvier customers are also realising the benefits of being more “green” and offsetting as much of their energy and water consumption as possible given the many benefits of doing so. The rising social consciousness agenda is having a significant influence on the economic case for developments to be built for sustainability, which can assist in increasing their marketability. What is then key is for investors, developers and their consultants and contractors to aspire to, is to incorporate “climate responsiveness” and “designing within constraint” concepts when developing buildings – to ensure that these buildings remain resilient and sustainable in an unpredictably, future context. peaking ahead of the bauma CONEXPO AFRICA trade show, Bonnett says: “The pandemic has certainly caused delays and disruptions across construction and infrastructure development, but there are some silver linings for the sector, and for Africa as a whole.” These, he says, included a new need for the realignment of developments such as commercial and hospitality spaces, the reconfiguration of retail developments and the reimagining of towns and cities. “We could see redevelopment and remodelling of spaces, the development of new warehousing and logistics hubs as e-commerce really takes off; and the growth of retail distribution infrastructure closer to outlets and consumers.” “Another opportunity lies in the complete redevelopment of urban spaces in South Africa and across Africa,” he says. “The pandemic is highlighting how difficult it is to maintain safe social distancing and ensure water and sanitation for townships and informal settlements, for example. This is an opportunity for investors, governments and private sector to reconfigure how Africa lives – reimagining housing, green spaces, sanitation, power, and the work environment to ensure that both urban and rural spaces are resilient to disruption such as pandemics.”
IMPROVING LIVING CONDITIONS The growth of urban areas in sub-Saharan Africa has accelerated in recent years and this growth is expected to pick up over the next 15 years, Bonnett says. “Donors, investors, governments and developers have been striving to improve living environments, but COVID-19
14
may sharpen minds around a more coordinated approach to developing sustainable, safe settlements.” “In the same way as much of Africa leapfrogged telephony progress and went direct to smartphones, we now have an opportunity to develop new urban areas that are sustainable, environmentally friendly and resilient to disruption. This shock to the system could push us in the right direction to develop better integrated, smarter cities.” Bonnett says Africa has much to learn from international best practice and pan-African forays into sustainable cities and infrastructure. “This is the time to have the conversations, and stimulate thinking around how we do this. Events like bauma CONEXPO AFRICA can play a key role in creating the linkages and getting processes going, so that the futureproof, sustainable African city is not just a theoretical concept.”

SUSTAINABILITY AND ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT
How to achieve good environmental stewardship on construction projects Demanding economic conditions – aggravated by stoppages caused by the COVID-19 pandemic – have highlighted the value of environmental stewardship in the construction sector. Bruce Paul, environmental manager at Concor, says a key focus of good environmental stewardship is on project efficiency.
P
aul says: “It is vital that contractors develop end-to-end engineering processes that conserve resources and manage risk – now more than ever.” Before construction on a project even starts, Concor considers issues including material sourcing, reduction of potential wastage, and the carbon footprint of fuel and materials. The company recently took the opportunity, for instance, to reduce the use of water, sand and cement on a Gauteng building project.
‘Effective stewardship demands a comprehensive suite of practices to prevent and mitigate any pollution that may emanate from our industrial processes’
“This interesting innovation was applied by constructing the inner wall with everite-hebel autoclaved aerated concrete (AAC) blocks, which are lightweight,” says Paul. “While a typical brick and mortar wall weighs about 350 kg per square metre, an AAC wall load is about 90 kg per square metre. Requiring a thinner skim coat finish, this positively impacted our material and logistical demands for less water, sand and cement.” The building’s long-term energy efficiency was enhanced with the use of performance glass which has a low-e aspect, reflecting long wave infrared energy and helping to keep the building cooler. This, in turn, reduces the load on the air conditioning system.
CONSERVING WATER He emphasises that judicious use of water is also an ongoing environmental concern for contractors, especially in water-scarce countries. In a building project in Botswana, Concor had to find solutions when a moratorium was placed on all non-drinking uses of municipal water. The porous rock in the foundations proved to have a constant outflow of irrigable water. This was pumped to a farm of tanks on site and reused for purposes such as dust control and the mixing
On the Loeriesfontein Wind Farm project, Concor implemented a Reverse Osmosis Water Treatment solution to provide fresh potable water

of mortars and plasters. The end-design of the building was even adapted to make use of this source for its the brown water system. “Water use on construction sites often comes from concrete-related processes such as the washing of readymix trucks,” he says. “We were able to remove solids such as aggregate for re-use, while returning the water to the batch plant. With this water’s cementitious content, it could also be used in the compaction of roads and building up of road layers.” Paul highlights the growing but necessary weight of environmental licencing that applies to both the end-client and the contractor. Complying with the requirements of the various licences – from water use and air quality to cultural heritage and protected species – requires expertise and agility.“Effective stewardship demands a comprehensive suite of practices to prevent and mitigate any pollution that may emanate from our industrial processes,” he says. “We apply this knowledge across all projects, according to our critical environmental standards to manage risks and make the most of opportunities in each case.” Concor www.concor.co.za

Enterprises embrace AIpredictive maintenance to unlock cost-saving benefits Predictive maintenance techniques powered by artificial intelligence (AI) are helping enterprises across industries to find patterns that can avoid machine failures.
A
ccording to data analytics company GlobalData, unlike AI, traditional business intelligence systems are not designed to handle huge volumes of industrial Internet of things (IIoT) data, splurging the massive economic benefits to enterprises. Venkata Naveen, disruptive tech analyst at GlobalData, comments: “Predictive maintenance is a key cost-saving digital strategy for any enterprise. AI-powered predictive maintenance can help enterprises to save money and time on maintenance, machine downtime while extending the life of their heavy equipment.”
MANUFACTURING Mitsubishi Electric has developed AI-based diagnostic technology that harnesses machine learning algorithms to analyse sensor data of machines and generate a model of the machine’s transition between different operational states. The model is then used to set optimal conditions for detecting abnormalities of a machine during each operational state, enabling operators to gauge signs of machinery failure before actual breakdowns.
INSURANCE American Family Insurance has collaborated with insurtech Neos to offer a smart home insurance product to US customers. The product consists of a smart water leak detector and cameras along with a mobile app connecting them. It leverages AI algorithms to analyse an individual’s water usage over a period of time establishing a pattern. Any changes in the wate r usage patterns can help Neos predict issues with the pipelines. The Neos app alerts users on potential issues such as dripping taps and hidden leaks on pipes along with a live camera feed. Neos instantly connects customers with repair services through its platform.
MINING Agnico Eagle Mines has partnered with Montreal’s Newtrax Technologies to predict mobile equipment maintenance issues before they happen using AI algorithms to the IoT sensors data.
‘AI-powered predictive maintenance can help enterprises to save money and time on maintenance, machine downtime while extending the life of their heavy equipment’
Newtrax helped Agnico Eagle to analyse an engine that has shown signs of a potential issue, which helped the mining company to save USD 63 610 in repairs and replacement of the engine. Instead of developing a digital predictive maintenance system from scratch, enterprises are partnering with startups in the space to deploy their predictive AI solutions off-the-shelf. Some of the popular interesting technology providers include C3.ai, Uptake Technologies, Maana, Sight Machines, Predictive-Sigma and Presenso. Naveen concludes: “One of the critical challenges for predictive maintenance is streamlining the flow of data from machines to a central system with a low level of latency and high security, which can be overcome given the advancements in 5G connectivity and cybersecurity. Despite the stumbling blocks, predictive maintenance is a vital part of an enterprise’s digital transformation strategy.”

Four steps to bui continuity in an In the current climate businesses are forced to operate in more uncertainty than ever before whilst facing unexpected crises, placing extra burden on the procurement and supply chain functions. Paulo de Matos, SYSPRO chief product officer suggests a four-step strategy for businesses to build procurement resilience in the wake of global vulnerabilities.
T
he role of procurement is about ensuring that business operations continue like clockwork no matter how disrupted the business environment is. This involves understanding the current environment as well as foreseeing the potential future environments and preparing for them. The challenge is that all businesses currently operate in a VUCA (volatility, uncertainty, complexity and ambiguity) world, meaning that there is the constant pressure of market volatility, uncertainty, complexity and ambiguity. Going forward, businesses are likely going to be operating in more uncertainty and facing more unexpected crises, placing extra burden on the Procurement and Supply Chain functions. From global trade disputes, to Brexit, volatile exchange rates, fluctuating commodity prices, civil unrest, and the global pandemic, procurement has needed to be more agile and resilient than ever before. These challenges have directly impacted the procurement of raw materials and intermediate goods, which are shipped as a part of the global value chain, and then usually assembled in another country. Within the global value chain, China is a large producer of components and assemblies, but with the recent pandemic many of these distribution channels were shut down with no notification and very little time to replace suppliers. As a means of proactive response, businesses should look at a four-step strategy to build procurement resilience in the wake of global vulnerabilities.
20
STEP 1: ANTICIPATE AND PLAN FOR UNCERTAINTY Today, the rigorous process of gathering as well as interpreting supplier, market, and environmental information is being replaced with a data-driven approach. This enables real time decision-making with businesses building AI-driven integrated data ecosystems that are underpinned by predictive analytics. Resultant insights can then be applied in forward planning on both strategy and performance.
‘By making a direct link between supply and demand, manufacturers and distributors can anticipate and better plan for uncertainty. This will ultimately improve the cash flow of the organisation, because procurement teams can better determine purchasing requirements based upon demand’
INDUSTRIAL BUYER JULY/AUGUST 2020
Paulo de Matos SYSPRO chief product officer Manufacturers and distributors can use technologies such as Enterprise Resource Planning to accurately forecast demand, identify stock availability, establish supplier lead times, cost, material requirements, contingency stock requirements and warehouse capacity constraints, and integrate this all into their unique business model. By making a direct link between supply and demand, manufacturers and distributors can anticipate and better plan for uncertainty. This will ultimately improve the cash flow of the organisation, because procurement teams can better determine purchasing requirements based upon demand.
STEP 2: EMBRACE THE LIMITLESS POTENTIAL OF DIGITALISATION By embracing a digital approach, procurement can form a real time part of business operations by improving agility
INDUSTRY TALK
ilding business uncertain world and preventing wastage by only procuring and storing the required raw materials. Further benefits can be found by storing less inventory and improving the ability to rapidly address changes in demand. Digital procurement solutions are enabling the future by providing access to previously unavailable insights or bringing order to massive (but unstructured) data sets, ultimately driving more complex analysis and better supplier strategies; enabling more efficient operations.
STEP 3: ENABLE ENDTO-END SUPPLY CHAIN VISIBILITY World crises have resulted in procurement teams scrambling for alternative and locallybased suppliers to ensure that they can still fulfil existing orders and continue to produce with new orders. End-to-end supply chain visibility is therefore a necessity to ensure procurement accuracy and resilience. This is needed to provide a single platform where everything from early stage planning based on forecasts through Master Production Schedules (MPS) to final delivery can be tracked and traced in real-time on a global scale. These advanced insights are needed to improve customer service, reduce costs, help with regulatory directives, and mitigate interruptions that will affect supplier inventory levels and ultimately product delivery. Supply chain visibility adds many other advantages for today’s global businesses. It allows them to reduce complexity, improve communication throughout the organization, remain nimble, and keep up with a changing and complex regulatory landscape.
STEP 4: FOCUS ON BUILDING A ROBUST PROCUREMENT MODEL
There are no standard business models to help businesses to manage what we are currently facing. This pandemic has exposed the fragility and the thin margins on which many global businesses run. Highly indebted companies, working from lean inventory, supported by just-in-time supply chains, and staffed by short-term contractors are suffering the longer-term impact of market unpredictability. Companies have realized that by encouraging their procurement departments to pursue the holy grail of greater efficiency through wholesale cost-cutting, have sacrificed robustness, resilience, and effectiveness. In many cases, it has turned out they have sacrificed the business itself. Manufacturers and distributors need to identify their own business model that will suit their own business.
They will also have to consider how to reengineer their supply chains to be resilient by design, factoring in increased complexity and uncertainty as the new normal. In the months and years ahead, effective supply chain management will be all about agility.
THE ERP ADVANTAGE Technologies such as AI embedded within your ERP platform can additionally assist with data driven insights to have sufficient visibility of all relevant activities. Global crises are an inevitable factor of life. By planning for the unknown, implementing the right technology for end-to-end supplier visibility and building a robust procurement model, manufacturers and distributors can ensure procurement resilience in a VUCA world. The family of hard rockers Ehrenberg Engineering presents its specialised ‘Rocker Family’, a range of products designed to save you time and effort in materials handling, whether you’re in the manufacturing, beverage, canning, building, transport or agricultural business. The Rocker Bin, Rocker Barrow, Rocker Pallet — and the newly introduced Rocker Tip Trailer — are manufactured locally by Ehrenberg Engineering to ensure workers enjoy maximum comfort, safety and flexibility in their working environments. Needing no hydraulic attachments, each variant has its own unique ability enabling it to handle a wide variety of materials. The Rocker Bin, with its steady tipping ability (brought about by disengaging the locking mechanism), allows you to dump or unload fast and efficiently. Easily manoeuvrable, forks can slide securely into the ‘shoes’ of the bins, whether empty or loaded. Once emptied, the bin rocks back into its original position by the backward tilt of the fork hoist and is then automatically locked. The forklift driver therefore does not need to leave his seat, thus saving time and effort.
The Rocker Bar row, suited to manual bulk handling, has uses ranging from agricultural to industrial. Twice the size of a standard barrow, it is still perfectly balanced and easy to wheel. The simple foot release allows the operator to tip without effort. The Rocker Tip Trailer is designed for the fast and efficient transportation ofgoods. A load of 1.4 cubic meters can be off-loaded by one person in seconds. Any suitable tow vehicle can be used.
These bins come in various sizes with different accessories and attachments. The Turbo Rocker bin, for example, comes with an airtight lid and turbo industrial vacuum cleaner, giving it numerous cleaning and pneumatic filling applications.

SAFETY AND HYGIENE
Ultra portable surface sanitation with Biospray-5 The Biospray-5, available from HCM Contractors, will help to keep COVID-19 at bay in the workplace and ensure you comply with recent health and safety regulations.
G
oodway Technologies has launched the BioSpray-5 which helps to improve the overall safety and wellbeing of occupants by effectively disinfecting surfaces against bacteria and viruses quickly.
BROAD SURFACE SANITATION This unit is powered by a lightweight CO2 tank and offers an intermittent spray functionality for spot sanitation across a variety of hard nonporous surfaces.
‘The mobility of the Biospray-5 allows businesses to quickly yet effectively perform sanitisation and disinfection throughout the entire facility’
You can use it in high contact, high turnover areas. When combined with the quick-dry EPA registered BioSpray D2 alcohol-based sanitiser, it is especially useful for broad surface sanitation, including around sensitive electronic equipment. For quick sanitisation and disinfection, alcohol-based solutions work best. However, typically alcohol cannot be sprayed due to flammability concerns. Yet the innovative BioSpray CO2 system renders the alcohol inflammable plus the lab calibrated gun produces micro-droplets of sanitiser, providing more effective coverage of all surface areas than trigger sprayers. Biospray-5 features an ultra-portable, lightweight design made from heavy-duty construction that features an easy-load technology for the CO2 canister and an easy to clean and maintain ABS body. No power is ever needed.
APPLICATIONS Primary applications include sanitising both food contact and non-food contact surfaces as well as general surfaces like general office surfaces, like keyboards, phones, desks, and door handles.
It can also be used for athletic equipment, medical surfaces, food preparation areas, and much more. The lab calibrated spray-andshoot technology provides way more effective coverage - with less chemical - than pump sprays or wipes, reaching inside even the smallest cracks and crevices. BioSpray covers surfaces faster and more completely than conventional methods of trigger-spray bottles or wipes, reducing labour time up to 63% while applying up to 88% less product. “Business that experience high traffic and turnaround are facing an even greater level of demand when it comes to sanitisation,” says Tim Kane president of Goodway Technologies. “The mobility of the Biospray-5 allows businesses to quickly yet effectively perform sanitisation and disinfection throughout the entire facility.” HCM Contractors www.hcm.cool
