Mining remains a key industry in SA
T
he mining sector in South Africa may have recently registered its third consecutive quarter of negative growth but mining, especially gold mining, remains one of the country’s most important industries. However, just as with all other industries, mining must adapt to changes such as Industry 4.0 to stimulate growth and continue to be relevant in the future. According to Anglo American, the mining industry is using technological advancements to its benefit. Spatial data visualisation, artificial intelligence and geographic information systems are just some of the new technologies shaping the mines of the future. Yet with increased reliance on automation and digitalisation, comes the looming threat of a cyber attack. r.co.za strialbuye www.indu

Read all about the cyber risks in mines on page 11. According to weforum.org another big trend in the global mining industry is the transition towards using low emission energy and transportation systems as well as renewable energy. Going forward, alternate forms of energy and electric mining vehicles will become highly sought after in South Africa. As always health and safety remains an essential part of mining. Mine workers often work under dangerous conditions. In order to maintain a healthy and productive workforce organisations need to be cognisant of what illnesses and injuries affect mine workers. On page 10 you can read about the scourge of TB in mines and on page 28 view some of BBF Safety’s PPE solutions for industrial and mining applications. THYSSENKRUPP PROGRAMMER HACKS INDUSTRY 4.0
Fluid flow detection for the autonomous plant start up challenge Andrew Gotara, an engineering programmer at thyssenkrupp Industrial Solutions South Africa, and his team walked away with an innovations award in the #hack4tk challenge. #hack4tk is hosted annually by thyssenkrupp AG in Essen, Germany. It is a game-changing initiative that maximises digital potential by fostering creative thinking and innovation and inspiring participants to solve complex challenges utilising digital technology. Gotara saw an opportunity to not only demonstrate how digital technology can be used to solve a challenge but also to utilise digital technology to partake in the hackathon remotely. The gruelling 24-hour competition which took place on 3 and 4 July 2019, welcomed individuals from all corners of the world, both from within and outside of thyssenkrupp, who believe they have what it takes to find a solution to these challenges. Gotora’s team consisted of one German and five locally based coding enthusiasts with expertise in the fields of engineering, artificial intelligence (AI), computer vision and data science. Out of the 10 hackathon challenges, the team selected both the ‘Chatbot virtual service assistant’ and ‘Autonomous plant start-up’ challenges and they split their team into two groups, with three team members working on each challenge. The ‘autonomous plant start-up’ challenge captivated Gotora and his team. They immediately recognised that automation was the link between the challenge and a similar tkISSA digital project, Liquid Fuel Storage (LFS). With members working from the thyssenkrupp Johannesburg office and the thyssenkrupp AG office in Germany, the forward-thinking team successfully used the internet and a variety of digital platforms including social media to solve the challenge. Using a computer, a camera and software, Gotora and his team automated the detection of fluid flow. Once the system has detected and confirmed fluid flow out of all the cells, the plant automatically starts up. However, in the event of no fluid or flow, the system alerts the technician. Expressing his gratitude to his team for their hard work and determination over those intense 24-hours, Gotora says that it was leveraging on digital technology that made the winning solution possible.

MAXIFLEX INTRODUCES RANGE OF UNDERGROUND VENTILATION MINE DOORS The doors are manufactured by global mine door solutions specialist, USAbased American Mine Door. Thanks to their unique design, the door wings open in opposite directions, enhancing safety, efficiency and productivity. In addition to giving the mine doors the ability to endure water gauge pressure, the patented ‘opposing wing’ design cancels out the effects of static pressure. Moreover, this key differentiating feature enables the mine to reverse air current without accumulating the costs of disassembling and reassembling doors in opposite directions. As the same air assists the doors to open and close, the air pressure is equalised, reducing potential stored energy concerns. The risk of ramp slope effects is eliminated as the door wing that operates downhill helps the other wing uphill.
Owing to the equal force principal, these versatile mine doors can be installed in most slope applications. The underground ventilation mine doors are available in three unique designs - low, medium and high-pressure in sizes ranging from 1.5m - 7m wide to 1.5m - 5m high. The doors are installed at a 12/6 pitch and the door wings both open at 63° versus 90°; this significantly reduces the open/close cycle resulting in improved productivity. Door speed is further increased by cushioned cylinders. All door functions are controlled by advanced automation control technology. The custom programmable logic control (PLC) package provides operators with greater control and increased productivity, whilst also improving their safety awareness. The PLC package helps to maintain airlock integrity by allowing only one door to open at a time while the other
door is ‘locked out’. Traffic lights and audible alarms at each door signals door positions. The mine doors can also be opened and closed from above ground. According to Maxiflex managing director, Bram Janssen, the underground ventilation mine doors are ideally suited to the southern African market as they are well-designed with proven reliability and of utmost importance offer complete peace-of-mind with optimum safety for the mineworkers. ‘Additional benefits offered by these doors include hassle-free installation and maintenance as all components are supplied with drawings. These products are also reusable and can be easily moved from one location to another. Moreover, the doors are able to use stored energy enabling operation in the event of a power failure.’

How to curb the scourge of TB in mines A recent article explores the reported implications of mine-linked air pollution on a Mpumalanga coal town. Residents of the region report continuous health concerns including tuberculosis (TB), though nothing conclusive has been found. The incident forms part of a larger question on whether the mining sector is doing enough to mitigate this disease. Martin Neethling head: Sanlam Health Insurance and Distribution, discusses how affordable access to on-site primary healthcare could greatly assist to curb the epidemic.
H
eidi Albert, head of the Foundation for Innovative New Diagnostics (FIND) in SA, elaborates on this epidemic. She references a World Bank report that TB rates within the mining workforce are estimated at 2 500 to 3 000 cases per 100 000 individuals – an incidence that’s ten times higher than the World Health Organization’s threshold for a health emergency, and three times the general population’s incidence rate, which is the third highest in the world. Albert says that according to the World Bank, 70 percent of TB cases among miners go undiagnosed, which puts families and communities at risk. The risk also spreads across borders, with 40 percent of mine workers coming from neighbouring countries to work on SA mines. The mining sector has taken positive steps to improve living conditions and digitally screen for illness regularly, which has resulted in a decline in reported cases, but there’s more to be done from a primary healthcare perspective.
A chest X-ray showing tuberculosis infection
RISKS FOR MINERS The big risks for miners are cramped living conditions, HIV, and silica dust, which can lead to silicosis. Mineworkers with silicosis are six times more likely to develop active TB. Providing easy access to primary healthcare means patients can be diagnosed and treated quickly and close to home. This means they’re more likely to seek and adhere to care and treatment, which can cure TB and manage HIV. WHO reports that TB is conclusively linked to HIV, with 66 percent of people with TB being co-infected with HIV.
Additionally, certain strains of TB are getting harder and harder to treat. ‘Drugresistant forms of the disease, like the multidrug resistant MDR-TB and XDR-TB, are caused by antibiotic-resistant bacteria and are a huge concern. SA had over 16 000 of these cases in 2017, according to the 2018 WHO Global Tuberculosis report. Inevitably, these illnesses are challenging and costly to treat, with high mortality rates,’ says Albert. Early detection is imperative, but obviously the ideal is for illness to be circumvented altogether. There’s a broader benefit to primary healthcare in that it can provide preventative services to reduce the risk of TB and HIV, and other health conditions like diabetes. You need to treat the person, not the illness. This means prioritising continuity of care, with screening for mineworkers and their families.
MORE THAN MEDICAL INTERVENTION Albert notes World Bank’s report on the big job that needs to be done in making miners feel comfortable seeking treatment. Many mineworkers are on contract, therefore the risk of not having a contract renewed is a huge disincentive to seek care for TB and HIV. Tackling TB in the mining sector needs more than just medical interventions. Offering access to primary healthcare and insurance can dramatically improve the wellness of a team and reduce incidents of absenteeism, thereby improving productivity and growth for the mining sector. ‘The cost of TB for the mining sector has not been officially quantified, but the industry has committed to reducing TB incidence rates to being at or below the country’s incidence rate by 2024.’ Sanlam www.sanlam.co.za

Increased cyber risk in mines According to cyber security specialist GECI, South African mining operations are set to embrace next-generation automation and Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) systems to slash costs and increase production. But they risk crippling shutdowns and threats to human safety if they fail to adequately protect their infrastructures against cyber-attack.
G
ECI, a tactical cyber security specialist with a portfolio of cyber security innovations developed by former Israeli cyber defence unit experts, is now active in South Africa. This will be focusing on local utilities, mines, manufacturers and other industrial sites in conjunction with local partner Sinac Group’s Nokuthula Mgwebile. South African GECI representative, Mike Bergen says: ‘Mines are starting to adopt IIoT and intelligent automation across the entire pit-to-port chain, from autonomous vehicles to robotic drilling, and all of these new technologies are connected,’ says Bergen. ‘Unless this new smart mine environment is built on a foundation of industry-specific cyber security, mines risk financial losses, threats to human health and safety and even complete shutdown. With margins as tight as they are, no mine can afford this risk. ‘Cyber-crime is a sophisticated and lucrative business, but mines have tended to lag in terms of cyber security,’ he says. Bergen cites EY Global Mining & Metals Cyber Security
leader Michael Rundus as saying 54 percent of mining companies experienced a significant cyber incident in the past 12 months.
BUSINESS RISKS ‘Cyber risk has become such a major threat to the sector that EY lists cyber risk among the top five business risks facing mining and metals industry. Attacks on industrial facilities are taking place all the time, costing industries billions.’ For example, Bergen notes the attack on Swiss/Belgian mining and metals processor Nyrstar early this year, which shut down parts of its IT systems across its operations. The losses were not disclosed. ‘This is typical of many such attacks, the losses not being disclosed or purposefully trivialised as “insignificant” by the embarrassed victims,’ he says. Norsk Hydro, an international aluminium, hydro and solar power firm, fell victim to a cyber-attack that crippled its computer networks in March this year. ‘Norsk Hydro operations in some 50 countries were forced to
revert to manual operations and clip boards to conduct their business for weeks leading to serious operational inefficiencies and sales losses. This attack was launched through an employee clicking on a phishing email triggering a relatively new strain of ransomware called LockerGoga, and spread throughout all their international operations centres, causing losses so far estimated at €40million. Such attacks are occurring and increasing weekly,’ says Bergen. ‘As mining operations embrace digitisation and IIoT to optimise their processes, they are increasingly opening themselves up to the risk of attack by cyber criminals, activists, and even possibly competitors or national enemies. So, automation is a double-edged sword, and mines need to make cyber security a top priority,’ he says. GECI www.industrialbuyer.co.za/ company/3764-geci-limited

Can the skills shortage crisis be an opportunity? South Africa needs skills and needs them desperately but CEO of PackSolve Alex Baisch, proposes this crisis can be turned into a golden opportunity for training and upskilling your workforce.
A
combination of several factors historical disadvantages, lacklustre public education and fast-moving change - is not only widening the skills gap, but exponentially increasing the demand for skills. A crisis can also be an opportunity. This has been the experience at PackSolve, where we have placed skills as a strategic imperative. Of course, who hasn’t? That’s not enough. Yet while working on this problem, we found an interesting and very powerful dynamic.
courses - and they would typically forget the information a few weeks later. So instead we tapped into online learning - LinkedIn Learning in this case. We maintain a number of prescribed courses identified through gap analysis, as well as give access to optional courses. Employees learn on their own time and volition, which turns out to be very effective.
‘Instead of referring to skills, rather consider the problem to revolve around two important human drivers: opportunity and selfimprovement’
OPPORTUNITY AND SELF-IMPROVEMENT To understand this potential, we need to alter our language a little. Instead of referring to skills, rather consider the problem to revolve around two important human drivers: opportunity; and self-improvement. These can also help define the two main employee groups at our operations: blue-collar staff on the floors and white-collar staff in the offices. Blue-collar workers want opportunities. Coming from humble and often struggling backgrounds, they are focused on improving their lot and expanding their prospects. The same can be said for white-collar workers, except they have at least escaped some of the harsh realities faced by the other workers, making them more interested in selfimprovement. One group wants to raise their chances for success while the other wants to improve the success they already enjoy. One would think the obvious solution is to start with the group needing a leg up the most, but a contrary pattern developed. There had been growing calls among our office staff for more opportunities to learn soft skills or to expand their business knowledge. We could have sent them to typically expensive
12
This is creating a wave of change for our culture, which we want to be world-class. When you empower your employees to be selfstarters, their attitudes change and are noticed by the rest of the workforce.
TRAINING AND EDUCATION Capitalising on this, we also ramped up training and education for the floor staff. It’s a more formal and technical pursuit, one that I will elaborate on in the future. But there are still significant overlaps, particularly around giving people the opportunities to improve,
INDUSTRIAL BUYER JULY/AUGUST 2019
Alex Baisch CEO of PackSolve dovetailed with a single culture that is about humility, honesty and inclusivity. These aren’t words on a mission statement: they are attitudes reflected by PackSolve’s 570 employees. As a company, we rank our priorities as employees, communities, customers, and then stakeholders. If we don’t help our employees realise opportunity and if they don’t see that reflected for the benefit of their communities, then little of what we do will be sustainable. There is a lot more nuance to our approach, such as how PackSolve’s strategic pillars align with these concepts. But if anything should be taken from this, it’s we can solve the skills challenge by looking at it from the employees’ perspectives: as opportunities for improvement. Modern learning tools, combined with the appropriate strategy and processes, can realise that. The business doesn’t only benefit from more capable employees but also gains a proactive culture everyone can buy into. PackSolve www.industrialbuyer.co.za/ company/785-packsolve

Address the entire supply chain to keep consumers coming back for more Changing consumer behaviour and creating loyalty throughout the supply chain are areas every FMCG manufacturer is trying to achieve. However, these are the last links and typically the most difficult elements to manipulate. This is due to challenges around validating sales – you can only reward loyalty if you can verify the purchase. Jaco Saunders, unit lead at MACMobile believes that in order to drive consumer behaviour and reward loyalty both en route to market and at the end consumer, you need to address the entire supply chain.
V
isibility and line of sight from start to finish are critical to gathering the required data necessary to achieve these goals. When it comes to loyalty, sales are always the primary Key Performance Indicator (KPI) and the measure of success is return on investment in sales figures. In the consumer space, brand loyalty and recall are both valuable, but a loyalty programme that does not result in additional sales it is not effective. The reality is you cannot create customer loyalty and drive increased customer sales without first having an effective route to market.
‘Ensuring the product is correctly priced (at each step on the value chain) is imperative. Using a loyalty programme to ensure a ‘price it right’ strategy could be the differentiator that maintains your market share’ THE PRICE IS RIGHT In-store promotions, prizes, discounts and so on can help to develop certain brand awareness, but without ongoing effort this will fade. Loyalty programmes are not a short-term endeavour
Jaco Saunders unit lead at MACMobile but a long-term commitment. Manufacturers should therefore look at rewarding behavioural change not simply to create a pull from consumers, but also a push from route to market. It is important to have your products in the right place at the right time in the right condition, so that customers are able to purchase them. Unfortunately, for all the marketing campaigns and initiatives, brand loyalty within the consumer goods space is highly volatile. More often than not, with such slight feature variations and ‘me-too’ products, the decision to purchase boils down to price. Ensuring the product is correctly priced (at each step on the value chain) is imperative. Using a loyalty programme to ensure a ‘price it right’ strategy could be the differentiator that maintains your market share.
of sale material, the condition of the products in store and much more. These too should be incentivised. The rewards themselves should also speak to two levels, specifically for the distributor or retailer business, and for individual people in those organisations. For example, a bar could be rewarded with promotional materials and stock, while managers and even service staff can be given tangible, personal rewards like airtime or even a financial incentive. These individuals will then be more motivated to promote the product to customers making it a win-win outcome for all parties involved. Each person in the value chain can be seen as an integral link, and they can all be rewarded to help drive sales and loyalty – but only if sales can be verified and audited. This requires realtime visibility into the entire supply chain, which ensures all data is always available and can be leveraged for the insight required. Without data, manufacturers are effectively blind, with no baseline or point of comparison. With no insight it is not possible to allocate rewards, drive behaviour or even see if there is a change. Data is at the heart of improving the supply chain and rewarding the relevant parties throughout, which in turn will help drive loyalty as well as maximising sales.
INCENTIVISE THE DISTRIBUTOR Route to market parties such as distributors and retailers are often incentivised based on stock volumes. However, there are also many soft elements that are instrumental in creating loyalty, including the way products are displayed, the correct placement of point

Why peristaltic hose pumps are ideal for precious metal mining Precious metal mines are replacing centrifugal pumps with peristaltic hose pumps as hose pumps handle 80 percent solids content. Bredel Peristaltic Hose Pumps, available from Watson Marlow, are perfect for the mining industry.
OVERCOMING OBSTACLES
W
hen it comes to pumps in mining, there is a high degree of difficulty in handling abrasive paste or slurry with varying density, over long distances and without frequent breakdowns. This difficulty is compounded when chemicals are added. Traditionally, centrifugal pumps are widely used for thickener underflow applications, but pump impellers may last just a few weeks in these tough conditions. And, as the paste or slurry density increases towards the bottom of the underflow thickener, the pumps continue to run at the set speed, but flow rates decrease.
Bredel 80 for thickener underflow application
Bredel peristaltic hose pumps overcome these obstacles as pump output is far less impacted by fluid dynamics such as paste density, viscosity, suction conditions and discharge pressure. Nor are they affected by the abrasive or aggressive nature of paste and chemicals. Bredel pumps are virtually maintenance-free. The only wear part is the hose, which can be replaced in-situ in a matter of minutes, without any requirement for special tools.
HEAVY DUTY PUMPS
FOR ABRASIVE SLURRIES
Pumps with no seals or valves to wear, clog or leak, up to 100 cubic metre/hr to 16 bar Minimal maintenance - just change the hose New Endurance hose - doubles hose life Suction lift capability to 9.5 metres, self-priming and dry running Ideal for abrasive products, high viscosities and shear sensitive fluids

The family of hard rockers Ehrenberg Engineering presents its specialised ‘Rocker Family’, a range of products designed to save you time and effort in materials handling, whether you’re in the manufacturing, beverage, canning, building, transport or agricultural business. The Rocker Bin, Rocker Barrow, Rocker Pallet — and the newly introduced Rocker Tip Trailer — are manufactured locally by Ehrenberg Engineering to ensure workers enjoy maximum comfort, safety and flexibility in their working environments. Needing no hydraulic attachments, each variant has its own unique ability enabling it to handle a wide variety of materials. The Rocker Bin, with its steady tipping ability (brought about by disengaging the locking mechanism), allows you to dump or unload fast and efficiently. Easily manoeuvrable, forks can slide securely into the ‘shoes’ of the bins, whether empty or loaded. Once emptied, the bin rocks back into its original position by the backward tilt of the fork hoist and is then automatically locked. The forklift driver therefore does not need to leave his seat, thus saving time and effort.
The Rocker Bar row, suited to manual bulk handling, has uses ranging from agricultural to industrial. Twice the size of a standard barrow, it is still perfectly balanced and easy to wheel. The simple foot release allows the operator to tip without effort. The Rocker Tip Trailer is designed for the fast and efficient transportation ofgoods. A load of 1.4 cubic meters can be off-loaded by one person in seconds. Any suitable tow vehicle can be used.
These bins come in various sizes with different accessories and attachments. The Turbo Rocker bin, for example, comes with an airtight lid and turbo industrial vacuum cleaner, giving it numerous cleaning and pneumatic filling applications.

New flagship MH11 with app control Ledlenser has supplemened its outdoor series and introduced a new flagship with the MH11, which for the first time will be controlled using the Ledlenser Connect app.
T
he headlamp is positioned at the high end of the product range and, thanks to the app, offers a whole range of new functions. These include the ability to set up individual profiles as well as functions such as timer, interval and SOS distress signal.
LIGHT UP THE NIGHT With up to 1000 lumen in Boost mode and 750 lumen in Power mode, the Ledlenser M11 provides considerable light intensity. An RGB LED also provides light in red, green or blue making the MH11 an individual all-round talent capable of satisfying the highest demands. The MH11 is the first fully customisable headlamp made by the Solingen-based light specialist Ledlenser. With the Ledlenser Connect app, the user has a range of new functions at his or her disposal. Users can add up to six functions of the lamp to their individual profiles which, after transfer from the app to the lamp, can be selected at the touch of a button. Up to six profiles can be set up fixing light intensity, light colour as well as additional functions such as Optisense. Users therefore have the opportunity to move between fixed settings depending on activity.
Customisable setting options such as slow-dim mean the MH11 can also replace the alarm clock, gently waking up the user with a gradually increasing intensity of light. Users who like to read before bed can use the function to turn the light off after a certain time - ideal for battery-saving use when camping. The app can also be used to define time intervals indicated by the MH11 by blinking. The function can be used for interval training using light signals or for indicating the lapse of a defined time period.
SOS The SOS distress signal provides support in emergencies and is made through the lamp after activation in the app.
ALL IN GOOD TIME The timer function has been redeveloped by Ledlenser and represents a milestone in the use of headlamps. Using Ledlenser Connect, time intervals can be pre-set in which the light is switched on and off.

The internationally recognised light signal indicates the need for help and assistance only few people know the right light sequence.
ESTABLISHED TECHNOLOGIES FOR BEST LIGHT QUALITY Alongside the new features, MH11 also includes the established core technologies for which Ledlenser lamps have become known. The lens - as in various Ledlenser headlamps - can be smoothly focused and can therefore be adjusted for various uses. The Optisense technology recognises ambient lighting and adjusts the light intensity of the MH11 accordingly in order to avoid glare and dazzling. For even greater flexibility, the headlamp is easily detachable and can be used as a handheld flashlight. Use of the headband allows the lamp to be elevated as required. In Power mode, the MH11 produces a light intensity of 750 lumen with a range of up to 300m with a battery lifetime of over four hours. With a light intensity of 300 lumen and range of 200m, the battery has sufficient power for eight hours, in the Low Power mode, the battery can even last 100 hours. The Power Boost mode is intended for short term use. In this mode, the lamp operates at an intensity of 1000 lumen. The Ledlenser MH11 is available locally through Awesome Tools. Connect with customers through your brand packaging The packaging sector is developing in the area of intelligent, smart and connected packaging. The benefit of this development is that it allows brand owners and marketers to add a layer of communication and promotional messaging to brand packaging.
C
onnected packaging is packaging that’s digitally connected. Not only does smart packaging offer highly desirable opportunities for companies to enhance brand image and recognition, it also increases the visibility and control of products in the supply chain. Connected packaging and on-pack digital communication help brand owners engage with consumers and add value to the user experience because of a pack’s increased functionality. Triggering an emotional response from consumers is key to increasing sales and brand loyalty. Once consumers have engaged with a brand, marketers provide a pathway to continuing that conversation by offering value-added on-pack drivers such as discounts and coupons, or new campaigns based on information previously collected.
ENHANCED TRACEABILITY Today, consumers are more discerning that ever. While barcodes have been widely used by manufacturers since Wrigley first used them 45 years ago on a 10-piece pack of Wrigley Juicy Fruit gum, traceability systems from a consumer perspective are also evolving as demands for better safeguards and increased brand confidence grow. With consumers constantly plugged in to the power of technology at their fingertips, brands have a valuable opportunity at retail to digitally provide the information they demand. Assurance, engagement, interaction and authenticity are what they want. In return these consumers offer their loyalty and trust in a brand. Connected packaging is an ideal way to seamlessly integrate with online media to strengthen relationships and consumer loyalty and create a multi-dimensional marketing strategy. ADVERTORIAL INDUSTRIAL - MINING - AGRICULTURAL - SOLAR DRIVE DYNAMICS ( 0860 373 266/ 0860 FRECON)
VARIABLE SPEED DRIVES Frecon and Drive Dynamics present two innovative solutions for a variety of industries from agricultural to mining, ideal for the use in rural and remote areas.
SMARTLINK 100 WIRELESS LEVEL CONTROLLER The Smartlink 100 is a long range wireless system which provides a solution to maintaining water levels in tanks, reservoirs and dams. It consists of a transmitter placed at the tank which monitors the water levels and sends a long range wireless signal to the base station to stop or start pumping. The Smartlink Transmitter is powered by a 3.6VDC lithium battery which requires no external power source or charging device. It connects to a standard float switch, or any potential free contact. The battery life of the lithium battery is one to two years depending on switching frequency. Power options for the Smartlink Receiver are 12 to 24VDC or 220VDC. A -220V unit can also be used as DOL Starter, up to 2.2Kw.
SY380V VOLTAGE BOOSTER VSD The SY380V was designed with small farms, workshops and rural areas in mind that only have access to a 220V AC. It converts the 220V single phase supply to three phase 380V. This enables the user to 220V AC power standard three phase equipment like compressors, hydraulic pumps, water pumps and extractor fans from a 220V AC supply.
ADVANTAGES There are numerous advantages to using the Smartlink 100 including: • no digging trenches to install cabling between the reservoir and the pump station • weather-proof enclosures IP65 • long distance range, up to 2km line of sight with standard unit/up to 4km with optional extended antenna • signal strength and on/off indication • radio band, this means no interference with standard WiFi and remote frequencies • no licence required.

The prefabricated Roading Solution BRP Roading Solutions are a unique range of prefabricated, bitumen rubber-bound materials for sealing, waterproofing, maintenance and traffic calming.
B
RP Roading Solutions is manufactured by Gauteng-based company AJ Broom Road Products. The company has a reputation for exceeding users’ expectations and a 25 year history of providing long lasting and economical solutions for the road owner.
THE HISTORY OF BRP ROAD PATCH In the mid 1980s the shortcomings of the available processes and materials were drivers for the development of the carpet tile-like bitumen rubber-bound material. It had to be offered in a range of aggregate sizes to match or create a change in texture. The BRP Road Patch contains the cost and use of raw materials as it does not require the area to be enlarged for the process of compaction and asphalt repair to be undertaken and completed. BRP Roading Solutions provides

immediate access to the site of installation with no curing time necessary.
JOB OPPORTUNITIES BRP Roading Solutions creates job opportunities by permitting entrepreneurs to access the industry without the financial capital other methods require. The solution is applied at ambient temperature and can be rolled with a vehicle or even water-filled or a lawn roller.
PROTECT YOUR WORK AREA With BRP Roading Solutions you can protect areas such as schools, clinics, hospitals, shopping centres, housing complexes, mines and municipal areas. It is an effective alternative to asphalt traffic calming solutions. You can also seal off areas such as crocodile cracking, which would negate the need to dig out.

Rubber bitumen is known in the industry as ‘the ultimate seal’ as it does not oxidise over its lifespan.
