JET DEMOLITION IMPLODES THREE HIGH-RISE BUILDINGS IN INDIA Demolition specialist Jet Demolition has successfully completed a three-building implosion project in the Maradu region of Kochi in Kerala, India. This is not only the demolition specialist’s first project in India, but also marks the first time a high-rise building in that country has been demolished by means of implosion.

PUBLIC SAFETY The three high-rise apartment buildings were the 20-storey Holy Faith H2O, the 18-storey Jains Coral Cove, and the 16-storey Golden Kayaloram. The former was imploded successfully on 11 January 2020, while the latter two were imploded successfully on 12 January 2020. All three buildings were located within 1.5 km of each other.

A successful business relationship established with Edifice Engineering of Mumbai last year resulted in Jet Demolition being recommended, and tendering successfully, for this flagship project. The major concern of the Indian authorities was the safety of the public in this high-density area and surrounding properties, the closest being a school only six metres away from Golden Kayaloram.

‘Here our trump card was our well-proven methodology and extensive experience in Africa and Indonesia,’ Jet Demolition director Joe Brinkmann comments. The demolition specialist’s answer to protecting the school was to effectively split the 16-storey building into two, thereby collapsing it in two directions in order to avoid the school.

Initial ground investigations revealed the structures had been built on alluvium, or soft soil, in a designated wetland area. This meant the magnitude of the ground vibrations induced by the implosions was sufficiently low not to cause any damage to surrounding buildings.

‘The major factor from an operational point of view was the close proximity. Therefore we had to ensure we had good control in order to mitigate any chance of damage,’ Brinkmann highlights. Another major challenge was the fast-track nature of the project.

RACE AGAINST THE CLOCK Due to the fact that an urgent demolition order for the three buildings had been issued by the Supreme Court of India for violating building regulations, Jet Demolition had only 2.5 months from inception to successful completion. The fast-track project saw the team work 12 to 16 hours a day, seven days a week. The Jet Demolition team was led by Brinkmann, together with senior site manager Kevin Smit, safety manager Marthinus Botha and site manager Ian Ehlers.

Edifice Engineering provided a local crew of 160 people, while Jet Demolition itself had a 12-person team on-site to carry out the design, engineering management, and oversight of all operations.

The Mumbai contractor has also been tasked to remove all of the rubble following the successful implosions.

With safety being paramount during the implosions, five layers of wire mesh were placed around the columns where the explosives were fixed, followed by a five-layer geotextile cover acting as source protection to contain the rubble. Secondary protection included hanging perimeter curtains on the façades of

surrounding buildings in order to contain the dust that was generated.

A total of 600 kg of cartridge explosives was used, in addition to 31 000 m of detonating cord and 5 300 blast holes. Due to the tight timeframe, diamond-drill coring was not feasible. Instead, electric percussion drills were used for drilling charge holes, and was only carried out on certain sections such as the liftshaft walls.

Some 800 national and 300 local police personnel oversaw the evacuation process and traffic control on the day of the implosions themselves. ‘Everything went very much according to plan. A project of this complexity, within this timeframe and to this level of detail would not have been possible without the dedication, co-operation, and support from all stakeholders. Local authorities were elated with the end result, which stands us in good stead of securing additional partnership and collaborative projects of this nature in future,’ Brinkmann concludes. It is estimated India has in excess of 18 000 illegal buildings at present, with the government embarking on a concerted campaign to demolish all structures that do not adhere to the relevant regulations.

EMBRACING THE SPIRIT OF TRANSFORMATION IN ENGINEERING

Working to embrace the spirit of transformation and development, Metric Automotive Engineering has affirmed its Level 4 status in terms of Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment (B-BBEE) requirements.

In an exciting recent deal, the Intombazane Development Trust has invested in the Germiston-based specialist in diesel and gas engine component remanufacture. This new shareholder recognised the value in the company, including its continuous investment in the latest technology and its commitment to the local economy.

The Intombazane Development Trust also appreciated the company’s strong ethos of skills development.

The involvement of the trust will further enhance this important work, by supporting the entry of black women into engineering fields through study bursaries.

‘It is gratifying to see our interventions uplifting previously disadvantaged candidates, focusing on learners at tertiary level,’ Andrew Yorke, operations director at Metric Automotive Engineering, says. ‘The skills they are learning are vital to the South African economy, and will certainly transform their lives for the better.’

Yorke highlights the importance of genuine transformation initiatives by the private sector to fill gaps in the market and support economic growth. This means training historically disadvantaged individuals in areas where their academic success can be rewarded by employment and personal growth in productive jobs.

‘There is no time for window-dressing while our economy struggles to create the necessary opportunities for young people,’ he says. ‘We are embracing the real spirit of B-BBEE, which is not to empower individuals who already have access to opportunities, but rather to

give a chance to those who haven’t had an opportunity before.’

LOCAL MANUFACTURING He emphasises that the beneficiaries of the recent deal are previously disadvantaged women.

Through the company’s training initiatives, it is furthering the opportunities that exist in fields like the local remanufacturing of large engine components.

Metric Automotive Engineering has long been a leader in diesel and gas engine component remanufacture, leveraging the latest technology and decades of experience in this sector.

With its Level 4 B-BBEE status, customers receive 100 percent spend recognition for any work they procure with the company.

Its modern workshop facilities are equipped for a range of testing, grinding, reprofiling, reboring, surfacing and other specialised engineering services. Work is conducted on large diesel and gas engine components including cylinder heads, cylinder blocks, crankshafts and conrods.

Compete engines are overhauled and assembled in-house, and are dynatested on one of the company’s three dynamometers.

SIKA ACHIEVES RECORD SALES IN 2019

Sika records double-digit growth and achieves a new sales record of CHF 8.11 billion in the 2019 business year. This equates to an increase of 16.3 percent in local currencies, with the acquisition effect accounting for 13.0 percent and organic growth for 3.3 percent. Sales growth in CHF amounted to 14.4 percent (1.9 percent currency effect).

Paul Schuler, chief executive officer: ‘With strong sales growth of 16.3 percent we exceeded our sales target for fiscal 2019 with a sales figure of CHF 8.11 billion. We are also anticipating record figures for the operating result and profit. We will maintain our positive growth dynamic over the coming years. With our new Strategy 2023 we are moving the performance of our organisation to the next level, and by consistently pursuing this strategic path we will be able to further exploit the business potential of our markets and generate sustainable,

The integration of Parex was driven forward in the 2019 business year. Fully integrated management structures are already established in 20 countries in which Parex is present. The forecasted synergies of CHF 80 to 100 million will fall in the higher end of this bandwidth thanks to the successful integration. More than 100 shared projects have already been initiated through crossselling activities alone. In China in particular, the company is tapping into a billion dollar market. OUTLOOK By investing in seven new factories and five acquisitions, the Group has laid the foundations for continued growth. These 12 key investments, the well-filled product pipeline, and the strong sales organisation give Sika reason to look to the future with optimism.

Strategy 2023, which was unveiled in October, is designed to expand the company’s growth model and align the organisation for continued long-term success and profitable growth. By targeting six key areas – market penetration, innovation, operational efficiency, acquisitions, strong corporate values, and sustainability – Sika is seeking to grow by six to eight percent a year up to 2023. It is aiming for a higher EBIT margin of 15 to 18 percent by 2021. Projects in the areas of operations, logistics, procurement and product formulation will result in an annual improvement in operating costs equivalent to 0.5 percent of sales.

It recently relocated into the same building as group company Rutherford in City Deep, Johannesburg, a distributor of Makita power tools, Mercury engines, and survey instrumentation.

NO SLIP UPS WITH DIE-LINE ENHANCE WALKWAY SAFETY Available in three forms, namely planks, mats and walkways, the Mentis Die-Line range of positive grip pressed section walkway products has a positive serration which ensures positive traction in all walking and working surfaces, even where mud, water, grease oil and detergents are present and could cause slippery or hazardous underfoot conditions. The serration on the grating applies irrespective of the direction in which a person is walking.

Lance Quinlan, national technical sales consultant at Andrew Mentis, explains that DieLine is easy to handle and erect with minimal welding or clipping required. This reduces the need for specialised installation labour.

‘Another important advantage that Die-Line offers is its high strength to weight ratio as this ensures an optimum loading bearing capacity and therefore the safety of all who use the walkway system,’ Quinlan says.

The Die-Line range also ensures high light penetration for further safety benefits and the

sections align perfectly for enhanced aesthetics.

The sections are designed for longitudinal span, obviating unnecessary steel support and heavy kick plates, both factors contributing greatly to enhanced cost effectiveness.

Transverse loading is transferred to the integrated kick flats (toe boards), which are provided with two slotted holes at each end and positioned around the neutral axis. Pressed angle splice plates fit on the outside and into the returned top edges, and M10 bolts and nuts are provided for easy installation.

Africa’s largest packaging company, Nampak opened the Liquid Carton divisions’ new Technical Hub in Roodepoort, Johannesburg, on 12 December 2019.

In one of his last official acts before leaving to head up Eskom, former Nampak CEO, André De Ruyter unveiled Nampak Liquid Cartons Technical Hub, cutting the ribbon during the facilities’ opening ceremony.

POPULARITY OF LIQUID CARTONS The new plant complements Nampak’s existing liquid carton facilities, which include a sales office in Bryanston, Gauteng, a printing plant in Isithebe, KwaZulu-Natal, a research and development (R&D) facility in Cape Town, and sister carton producing plants in both Malawi and Zambia.

Following renewed popularity and rising demand for liquid cartons, Nampak Liquid Cartons’ new Technical Hub was custom built to maintain, and service the growing pool of liquid carton filling machines for the food and beverage industry, such as dairy, water, and the fruit juice.

A canister pump is the type of pump that ensures golf courses are green and lush When the team responsible for the maintenance of the irrigation system at one of South Africa’s premier golf courses was confronted with high levels of debris and pumps running dry, it shifted to a high-temperature-resistant high-wear-resistant polymer, Hitemp 150, for replacement pump bowl bushings.

Kyle Pienaar, of Golf Turf Electronics, found that the OEMsupplied carbon pump bowl bushings lasted only two months at the Sabi River Sun course, while another polymer’s bushings lasted six months in the highly-abrasive debris-filled water.

As a result, he turned to an even tougher polymer material, Hitemp 150, which is designed to give good resistance to abrasion and to be especially suited for dirty applications.

Faced with highly abrasive conditions, the bushings lasted a year without a scratch, says Pienaar.

Pienaar also found Hitemp 150’s temperature characteristics useful.

With a temperature rating of 150ºC, a short-term temperature limit of 170ºC and a melting point of 265ºC, the material was also suitable for the harsh operating condition of having to run dry for limited periods as is wont to happen with unattended pumps on golf courses.

While this is not ideal for the pumps or the bushings, if the bushings are treated as sacrificial parts that protect the pump in a harsh environment, the Hitemp 150 polymer bushings do their job.

The bushings, which can withstand one minute of dry running, will eventually be affected by an environment in which water cooling does not occur.

‘In extreme cases, the bushings melt on to the shaft,’ Pienaar explains. ‘This causes the motor to trip and the pump to cease to operate. This is preferable to damage that may be caused by a pump running dry for a lengthy period.’

2. SUSTAINABILITY The global focus on climate change and global warming are driving a greater sustainability focus, based on the idea of creating a circular economy around 3D printing instead of a linear one.

By utilising changes in design –and cutting out unnecessary parts –the weight of parts created can be reduced by over 93 percent in some cases, meaning a reduction in carbon footprint of up to 95 percent.

3. MATERIALS The entry of several chemical companies such as BASF into the 3D printing market is helping drive the use of new innovative materials and compounds. Materials currently in use include glass fibre and diamond-based polymer composites, as well as plastic powders, plastic filaments, photopolymers, hydrogel, metals, ceramics, and biomaterials.

4. DIGITAL TWINS A digital twin provides a holistic view of the capabilities of an asset, helping to orchestrate, manipulate or program certain aspects of an industrial internet device.

In 3D printing, a digital twin’s advanced analytics will enable organisations to close the loop between a digital production plan and its actual performance. For example, Siemens’ MindSphere software interrogates an industrial internet data pool to feed insights back into the digital twin of a multi-jet fusion process, enabling an organisation to troubleshoot what happens before and after printing with equipment, material flow and worker performance.

It is also working closely with GKN in the same materials arena. Other alliances include Stratasys with Solvay, BASF with Impossible Objects, and French chemicals company Arkema with Carbon.

TRANSFORMATION IS MORE THAN TECHNOLOGY This transformation is not just about technology. It is rooted in a fundamental shift in the way business operates. Not unlike the shift from CapEx to OpEx induced by the rapid ascent of cloud computing, this transformation is forcing organisations to reshape its business models.

The speed and scale of this operational lifecycle increase with every application developed.

The ability of IT to meet demand can only be realised through the adoption of automation, which enables organisations to develop and deploy even more applications.

THE AI ECONOMY

Each iteration of this cycle generates more data. Business unification provider Domo reports that over 2.5 quintillion bytes of data are created every single day and that by 2020 ‘1.7MB of data will be created every second for every person on earth’. That is a mind-boggling amount of data ushering in the data economy as applications collect and aggregate every minute detail of digital activity—from operations to business transactions to consumer interactions.

Traditional data analysis techniques will be unable to keep up.

Systems and the people who rely on data to make operational and business decisions daily will be overwhelmed.

A new breed of analytics will rise as a result and take on the burden of analysing the massive rate and high volume of data being produced. Only machines and advanced machine learning technologies will be capable of ingesting and processing the amount of data that will be created.

Ultimately, the insights produced by analytics will be as overwhelming as that of the data from which they were produced.

Operators will not be able act fast enough to take advantage of the insights produced.

This will lead to the AI Economy, in which AIassisted business and operations will take on responsibility for operating the applications on which business runs. This economic shift will not be trivial. According to McKinsey, ‘AI has the potential to deliver additional global economic activity of around $13 trillion by 2030, or about 16 percent higher cumulative GDP compared with today.’ It’s no surprise then to find that as early as 2018, 71 percent of C-level executives were already eyeing AI as a path for economic growth and competitiveness (2018 Views from the C-Suite: Rising to the Challenge).

This view of AI is not merely aspirational.

found that AI is second (32 percent) only to IT automation (42 percent) as the technology expected to have the biggest impact on business.

This is a pertinent issue for all enclosed workplaces but is an ever-present concern for manufacturing plants and factories. Preventing SBS is extremely important for the health, safety and productivity of your workforce.

ommon symptoms of SBS are: throat irritation, breathing difficulties, tightness in the chest, runny nose, allergy-like symptoms such as sneezing, burning sensation in the nose, itchy skin rashes, headaches, nausea, body aches, forgetfulness, difficulty concentrating and fever. Suffering from these symptoms on a daily basis can lead to absenteeism and low productivity of employees.

The HANATO band sealer is suitable for various bag sizes. Ideal for sealing plastic bags filled with dry foods, grain, coffee etc. Seals pouches, foil securely with a 10mm seal.

The Saxon range of sealers are state of the art. Available in stainless steel for the food industry as well as fertilizer and chemicals.

No Teflon belts – uses the patented method of ‘hot air’ sealing with less maintenance and down time.

AUTO INFEED DEVICE The Fischbein infeed automatically guides the filled bag towards the stitcher. Allows for straight stitching and neat closures. Available for straight stitching or fold over prior to closing the bag.

The family of hard rockers Ehrenberg Engineering presents its specialised ‘Rocker Family’, a range of products designed to save you time and effort in materials handling, whether you’re in the manufacturing, beverage, canning, building, transport or agricultural business.

The Rocker Bin, Rocker Barrow, Rocker Pallet — and the newly introduced Rocker Tip Trailer — are manufactured locally by Ehrenberg Engineering to ensure workers enjoy maximum comfort, safety and flexibility in their working environments. Needing no hydraulic attachments, each variant has its own unique ability enabling it to handle a wide variety of materials.

The Rocker Bin, with its steady tipping ability (brought about by disengaging the locking mechanism), allows you to dump or unload fast and efficiently. Easily manoeuvrable, forks can slide securely into the ‘shoes’ of the bins, whether empty or loaded. Once emptied, the bin rocks back into its original position by the backward tilt of the fork hoist and is then automatically locked. The forklift driver therefore does not need to leave his seat, thus saving time and effort.

The Rocker Bar row, suited to manual bulk handling, has uses ranging from agricultural to industrial.

Twice the size of a standard barrow, it is still perfectly balanced and easy to wheel. The simple foot release allows the operator to tip without effort.

The Rocker Tip Trailer is designed for the fast and efficient transportation ofgoods.

A load of 1.4 cubic meters can be off-loaded by one person in seconds. Any suitable tow vehicle can be used.

These bins come in various sizes with different accessories and attachments. The Turbo Rocker bin, for example, comes with an airtight lid and turbo industrial vacuum cleaner, giving it numerous cleaning and pneumatic filling applications.
