SPARGO MICA HARDWARE A FAMILY STORE

STANDING TOGETHER Nowadays SPARGO MICA is managed by Martiens’s children (and their spouses), Marius & Estelle, Nicky & Conraad, Wessel & Jolande as well as their younger brother Ryno. Soon the third generation will also join the family business as they start their careers. Martiens is semi-retired, but still manages all finances from Oesterbaai.

Family is the backbone of so many South African hardware stores. Sasolburg based SPARGO MICA HARDWARE turns 30 next year. Martiens Kunneke built up this business to provide for his family. This is where the second generation is currently working hard at continuous growth and hardware store excellence. Interestingly, the two main premises-acquisitions were made by well-timed auction purchases. In 1992, Martiens and his ‘MPM Handelaars’ business partners won the bid on ‘SPARGO HARDWARE’. The location of the original store is well situated for hardware customers. As the paint business grew, so did the hardware product range. The store became a MICA in 1998 and soon needed expansion, because retail space was limited to 650m2. Jolande Kunneke, Nicky Fourie & Marius Kunneke

In 2006 an agricultural co-op’s premises came up for auction and Kunneke (who by then had bought all the shares in SPARGO) acquired a space-solving solution. A purchase that provided an additional 1000m2 retail space with a 2500m2 build yard. This became the second branch: SPARGO MICA BUILD.

THROUGH THICK AND THIN One of the biggest events in SPARGO’s history has been the national COVID-19 lockdown in 2020. Like many hardware stores, SPARGO experienced interesting times. Once hardware stores were given special permission to trade, business improved with daily sales dramatically increasing compared to prior years. “We worked shorter hours but helped double the number of customers – they didn’t come to browse, they had to wait in line and definitely came in to buy specific things needed”, says Marius. STRENGTH IN UNITY The advantage of family involvement truly benefits the business. “You can always count on someone that can help…”, says Marius. Approximately 40 staff members take pride in being part of this extraordinary business - many for longer than 10 years. Duties are shared amongst family members, each specializing in their field. DIY customers, local businesses, schools and contractors take full

advantage of the wide product range offered. “The store’s biggest attraction is our personal customer service and atmosphere of friendship”, says Nicky, “customers often share techniques, knowledge and plans with each other and staff…furthermore, the store has longstanding relationships with the community and proudly sponsors local causes.” EXTENDED FAMILY Marius proudly tells the story of how MICA members acquired shares in the current holding company of the Mica brand and the successes they’ve achieved since then. Having secured their independence, the family agrees that a large part of the store’s success today is attributed to their MICA membership. The store has established itself as one of the most successful members within the MICA group, and participates in the larger format MEGA MICA promotion advertising program. Marius remarks that many of the current members consider MICA a “familyoriented group”. The SPARGO team is enthusiastic about MICA - The group’s buying power and national network is leveraged to be truly competitive in the market - Ultimately, customers are served best.
