budget speech highlights new vat strategy and economic outlook
As we approach the end of Q1 2025, attention turns to the Budget Speech, a pivotal event for our economy. Initially proposing a 2% VAT increase, the finance minister revised it to a gradual two-step hike: 0.5% in 2025/26 and another 0.5% in 2026/27, raising VAT to 16% and generating R28bn for 2025/26. This approach aims to support redistribution, redress, and structural transformation goals, which are vital as the economy grew by only 0.6% in 2024. The projected GDP growth is 1.8% over the medium term, necessitating a faster pace for alignment. For businesses, the minister says the suggested budget will present an opportunity for increased investment and household consumption, aided by stable
inflation, moderate employment gains, and improved household balance sheets. The easing of structural constraints, including infrastructure investment, promises to further support economic growth.

boundaries between digital and physical shopping continue to crumble
The surge in South Africa’s online sales during the pandemic has plateaued, giving way to a fully omnichannel retail environment. South African consumers are increasingly viewing digital and physical shopping as intertwined, a trend that is set to persist and evolve through 2025.
NIQ South Africa MD Zak Haeri notes that retailers must adapt to this interconnected retail space by offering seamless omnichannel experiences rooted in convenience, affordability, and accessibility.
To thrive, businesses should keep an eye on these six key trends projected to shape South Africa’s retail landscape in 2025.
DATA-DRIVEN STRATEGIES LEAD THE WAY
NIQ’s Omnichannel Commerce data reveals that while online sales of consumer technology and durable goods have stabilised at significant levels in regions like the Middle East and Africa (19% market share), sales in newer categories such as groceries
are gaining momentum.
Data-driven marketing allows for personalised promotions, tailored product recommendations, and messaging that resonates with consumers. Retailers who succeed will master using these insights not only for reactive campaigns but also to anticipate future trends and behaviours.
RETAIL MEDIA NETWORKS (RMNs):
RETAILERS AS ADVERTISERS
Retailers are increasingly embracing retail media networks (RMNs) as a lucrative revenue source amidst tight margins and intense competition. These networks convert retailers into B2B advertising giants
by monetising in-store digital displays, eCommerce ads, and more.
Major players like Amazon, Takealot, and Checkers are already capitalising on RMNs, reflecting a broader global trend. For instance, McKinsey projects RMNs to add $1.3tn to enterprise values in the U.S. by 2026, driven by profit margins as high as 70%. Amazon’s retail media revenue hit an astounding $46.9bn in 2023. To maximise ROI on RMN investments, manufacturers and distributors must strategically allocate their budgets, looking for platforms that yield robust return-on-ad-spend as well as improved brand visibility.
Zak Haeri, managing director for NIQ in South Africa.
RETAIL MATTERS
OMNICHANNEL RETAILING
MARKETPLACES CONTINUE TO EXPAND
Multi-brand platforms such as Amazon, Shein, Temu, and local giants like Takealot and Makro are flourishing as they monetise their eCommerce ecosystems. Through marketplace models, these platforms not only sell directly to customers but also earn through fees and commissions on third-party sales. In 2022, total consumer spending on the top 100 marketplaces globally reached $3.25tn, and an impressive two-thirds of global eCommerce occurs on marketplaces.
Strong growth is anticipated in South Africa’s marketplace segment, especially as Amazon gains traction and local trends align with international norms.
CHINESE PLATFORMS CHALLENGE THE MARKET DESPITE OBSTACLES
Chinese platforms such as Temu and Shein have disrupted South African retail by capturing significant market share thanks to aggressive pricing strategies. However, local retailers have raised concerns about these companies exploiting tax loopholes to circumvent VAT and import duties.
The South African Revenue Service is intensifying its efforts to enforce stricter tax compliance, potentially slowing these platforms’ momentum. Despite this, the
// In South Africa's omnichannel retail space, the race to capture consumer attention is fiercer than ever //
platforms are likely to adapt due to their existing loyal customer bases and persistent pricing advantages.
AI DRIVING RETAIL INNOVATION
Generative AI is transforming the retail sector by enabling rapid creation of customised assets such as videos and graphic content, tailored for specific customer segments. However, retailers face challenges in balancing AI-generated content with the need to maintain a human touch.
NIQ research indicates that while AI’s efficiency and cost-effectiveness are undeniable, consumers find AI-generated advertisements more annoying or confusing than human-crafted ones. Moving forward, retailers will need to carefully guide AI processes — focusing on high-quality outputs that genuinely resonate with consumers and avoid alienating them.

SOCIAL COMMERCE’S LONG-AWAITED BOOM
Predicted to grow from $0.62tn in 2021 to $7.03tn by 2030, social commerce is gaining momentum, with platforms like TikTok driving sales, particularly in health and beauty categories.
Asia-Pacific leads the global social commerce market, but South African consumers are rapidly embracing social media not only for product discovery but also for direct purchases. By leveraging shoppable features and capitalising on impulse buys, brands can tap into this expanding channel to boost growth and stay competitive.
CONCLUSION
In South Africa’s omnichannel retail space, the race to capture consumer attention is fiercer than ever. Success hinges on delivering a frictionless pathto-purchase across all touchpoints while meeting increasingly high consumer expectations.
Ultimately, winning in this evolving retail landscape requires balancing technological innovation with the human touch, enabling retailers to meet customer demands across digital and physical channels alike.

expand your supplier network with elite star trading
In today’s fast-paced retail landscape, staying ahead means more than just keeping the shelves stocked – it’s about finding the best deals, fostering strong supplier relationships, and ultimately passing value onto customers.
One powerful way to achieve these goals is to expand your supplier network with voluntary buying groups, like Elite Star Trading (EST). But what exactly can a buying group offer? How can joining one add value to your business and help you scale with less risk? Let’s break it down.
WHAT’S A VOLUNTARY BUYING GROUP ANYWAY?
Voluntary buying groups, sometimes known as VBGs or purchasing co-ops, pool together independent retailers to negotiate better deals with suppliers. EST, one of the largest VBGs in South Africa, operates with this goal in mind – helping you, the retailer, strengthen your business by connecting you with suppliers who offer competitive pricing and top-notch products.
KEY BENEFITS OF JOINING A VOLUNTARY BUYING GROUP
Becoming part of a VBG like EST isn’t just about lowering costs; it’s about levelling the playing field.
Here’s why that matters:
• Improved purchasing power: By pooling resources, buying groups can negotiate bulk deals that individual stores couldn’t secure alone
• Wider selection of suppliers: Gain access to a broad network of vetted suppliers, providing greater flexibility and variety
• Increased operational support: Many buying groups offer marketing, training, and operational resources to support your business
• Reduced financial risk: Mitigate risks by splitting costs with group members, making it easier to maintain cash flow stability
• Enhanced competitive advantage: Smaller businesses can compete with big-box retailers on price, selection, and quality.
WHY EXPAND YOUR SUPPLIER NETWORK WITH EST?
It’s no secret that retail has its ups and downs, with market fluctuations and supply chain issues. For retailers looking to add
stability to their operations, expanding your supplier network with EST is a strategic step. EST provides the resources and network strength you need to confidently expand your product range, all while benefiting from lower overheads.
STRENGTHEN YOUR SUPPLY CHAIN
EST has extensive partnerships with suppliers nationally, which allows its members to diversify their supply chain. If one supplier faces a shortage, members can swiftly pivot to another without compromising product availability or pricing. In today’s uncertain times, having access to multiple reliable suppliers isn’t just beneficial; it’s essential.
ACCESS BETTER DEALS AND DISCOUNTS
It’s all about the numbers! EST negotiates bulk rates with suppliers, which means you’re tapping into discounts that would typically be reserved for major retailers. These savings not only add up but can be passed on to your customers, boosting your competitive edge.
LEVERAGE EXCLUSIVE PRODUCTS
One perk of working with EST is access to exclusive products that other buying groups may not offer. Whether it’s unique items or high-demand seasonal goods, members can get their hands on products that attract more foot traffic, driving sales and customer loyalty.
HOW VOLUNTARY BUYING GROUPS HELP YOU CONNECT WITH RELIABLE SUPPLIERS
One of the biggest challenges for independent retailers is finding dependable suppliers who deliver quality products on time. When you expand your supplier network with a top voluntary buying group, you’re not just joining a group – you are joining a trusted network where suppliers are rigorously vetted to meet high standards.
BENEFITS OF A WIDER SUPPLIER NETWORK
• Enhanced flexibility: The ability to source products from multiple suppliers can cushion your business against supply chain disruptions
• Improved product diversity: Access to a larger supplier network means more variety in products, allowing you to tailor your stock to local demand
• Better quality control: With established
buying groups like EST, the suppliers are thoroughly screened, ensuring that you’re working with quality-controlled products
• Streamlined supply chains: A single point of contact simplifies the order process, reducing time and management efforts on your end.
BUILDING LONG-LASTING SUPPLIER RELATIONSHIPS
EST doesn’t just offer a list of suppliers; it fosters lasting partnerships. By working within a reputable network like EST, you can establish long-term relationships that come with additional perks – early product releases, preferential treatment during peak seasons, and even the possibility of credit terms.
PRACTICAL STEPS TO EXPAND YOUR SUPPLIER NETWORK WITH VBG s BY EST
Wondering how to make the most of your buying group membership?
Here are some practical tips:
• Analyse your current inventory needs: Determine which product categories could benefit from a broader supplier base
• Communicate with your buying group’s representatives: Elite Star Trading’s representatives can provide guidance on preferred suppliers based on your unique needs
• Use group resources: EST offers tools and training sessions – attend these to learn best practices for inventory management and supplier relationships
• Negotiate with confidence: Being a member of a top buying group like EST gives you leverage, so don’t hesitate to negotiate favourable terms with suppliers, knowing you have a network backing you up.
REAL-LIFE SUCCESS STORIES
Retailers who have expanded their supplier network through Elite Star Trading have noticed a remarkable impact on their businesses. Here are a few anecdotes that illustrate the power of a buying group: “We are so appreciative of the work that EST does. Through our membership in EST, we have found many new funding sources that we otherwise would not have known about. Joining EST was the best investment our organisation ever made. Thank you, EST!”
CONCLUSION
In the ever-changing retail world, staying flexible and having access to a reliable network of suppliers can make all the difference. new trends, creative solutions set tone for the hardware industry
With 2025 in full swing, the hardware and DIY industry is buzzing with optimism. Orlando Luis, Brights Hardware CEO predicts that new trends, creative solutions, and eager homeowners are setting the stage for a year of fresh starts in the hardware industry.
PAINTING TAKES THE SPOTLIGHT
Painting has always been one of the most affordable ways to refresh a home, and it is firmly in the spotlight for 2025. After a stretch of deferred maintenance, more people are tackling overdue projects. But painting is no longer about sprucing up surfaces; it is becoming a form of self-expression and creativity.
New products in the South African market are adding to this renewed enthusiasm, Luis points out. He mentions that some of the noticeable trends he has witnessed as a retailer include Duram’s RubberFlex, a rubberised waterproof coating, which he believes is gaining attention for its durability and flexibility. It is ideal for areas needing robust waterproofing. Meanwhile, Plascon’s
Nuroof Cool is setting new standards for roof paint, as it offers technology that reduces surface temperatures and enhances energy efficiency – a perfect fit for South Africa’s sunny climate.
Adding a splash of personality to interiors, Luis comments that Dulux’s Colour of the Year for 2025, True Joy, is an uplifting yellow designed to bring creativity and optimism into homes. For those seeking sustainable options, he believes that Amoriguard Eco-Friendly Paint, made with recycled fillers, is making waves as an environment-friendly solution.
“Painting is about more than just maintenance,” says Luis, adding that it is a creative outlet that can breathe new life into a home.
// Painting is about more than just maintenance, it is a creative outlet that can breathe new life into a home //
SOLAR TAKES THE SPOTLIGHT
Despite a rocky year in 2024, solar is back in focus for 2025. With electricity prices rising in March, homeowners are opting for solar panels and energyefficient appliances, such as the Taurus water cooler, which cools water with ice cubes using air circulation. These choices help cut monthly bills and lessen dependency on the power grid. Many retailers are rolling out promotional deals, making it an excellent time to invest in sustainable energy solutions.
“Solar technology keeps improving. Panels are more efficient and increasingly affordable, making solar a worthwhile long-term investment. As financing options become more accessible, these solutions are poised for serious momentum,” says Luis.
Even small-scale products – solarpowered outdoor lights or rechargeable gadgets – are growing in popularity.
DIY FENCING AND CLADDING TRENDS
Fencing and cladding are capturing homeowners’ attention in 2025. Nutec Fibre Cement Wendy planks, for example, are popular for their durability, cost-effectiveness, and textured wood grain finish, the ideal cladding for perimeter fencing and gates and even the exterior walls of your home.
“This is about more than good looks. Homeowners want low-maintenance, long-lasting, and budget-friendly options. Fencing and cladding can boost a property’s curb appeal while enhancing security and functionality,” he explained.
Increasingly, these materials are being used indoors. Homeowners are creating feature walls, adding texture to living spaces, or using cladding as a stylish option for hightraffic areas like hallways or mudrooms. The versatility of products like Nutec Wendy planks allows them to seamlessly transition from outdoor to indoor aesthetics.
CORDLESS POWER TOOLS LEAD THE CHARGE
“Cordless tools are evolving every year,” says Luis. “We’re seeing more heavy-duty options for construction, plus new cordless gardening tools like hedge trimmers, leaf blowers, and chainsaws.”
A notable milestone is the introduction of a 40V Makita brushless cordless tool range for engineering and construction mudrooms powerful enough for big jobs without the hassle of cables. Brands like DeWalt have launched advanced cordless tools, including the 20V MAX XR Reciprocating Saw and the 5-Inch Orbital Sander, designed for both professionals and DIY enthusiasts.
Given this emerging uptake of cordless power tools, Brights Hardware is expanding its in-house tool selections under the Total, Stallion, and Brights Brands, reflecting a broader shift toward cordless technology.
OUTDOOR LIVING STEPS UP
As more homeowners see their yards as extensions of their homes, Brights Hardware is meeting the demand with a 400m2 open-air display at its Brackengate store, featuring landscaping solutions, stylish pots, and eco-friendly plants.
“People want to make the most of their outdoor areas, whether for entertaining or relaxation,” says Luis. “Our new display will inspire customers to bring those ideas to life.”
“Excitingly, Total tools have a new range of 20V Cordless Li-ion power tool and appliance combo kits that features five tools in a carrycase that all work off the same battery platform.”
International trends in gardening tools are also making waves, says Luis. Ryobi’s 36V Cordless Leaf Blower, featuring Whisper Fan Technology, delivers powerful yet quiet performance and is available locally. Greenworks’ 60V Self-Propelled Lawn Mower offers extended battery life, though its availability in South Africa remains limited. Meanwhile, the Aiper IrriSense Smart Irrigation Sprinkler highlights future smart gardening trends with app-controlled precision irrigation.
“Battery tech just keeps getting better,” Luis notes. “Cordless tools are transforming how we approach construction, renovation, and gardening.”
2025: THE YEAR OF SMARTER PROJECTS
Whether updating your fence, going cordless, or embracing solar power, 2025 is about smart, stylish, and sustainable choices.
“If you need inspiration or advice, the team at Brights is always ready to help,” says Luis. Brights Hardware stores are in the Western Cape in Boston, Blackheath, Langebaan, Mitchells Plain, Richmond Park, Plattekloof, Stonewood, Brackengate, and Sunningdale.

Angela Hunt also joined, focusing on finance. In 1999, the company outgrew its premises and relocated to Hightech Village in Midrand, where staff numbers increased, and new brands such as PG, Alpen, and Pony were
introduced. The acquisition of Vermont American by Bosch International led to the agency being handed over to Bosch SA. Despite this change, Vermont Sales retained its well-known name and launched its own range of accessories under the new brand, Tork Craft.
By 2008, Vermont Sales had again outgrown its space and moved to 8 Suni Avenue in Corporate Park South, Midrand. This new location allowed for a larger
staff and the addition of more brands, as well as the initiation of their own Open Days to showcase these brands. The company’s continued growth necessitated a move in 2018 to an ultramodern facility at 192 Tsessebe Crescent in Corporate Park South. This new premises features a cutting-edge warehouse and office space, while the previous location now houses a sophisticated testing centre and a world-class exhibition centre.

WHERE LOCAL INNOVATION IS KEY
Vermont Sales prides itself on its independence and dedication to local needs. As masters of their product destiny, they have developed six proprietary brands — Tork Craft, Aircraft, Pinnacle, D-Tech, Pro-Tech, and Delrock — tailored specifically for the South African market. These brands are not only locally developed but are also tested rigorously in their own Tool Test and Quality Control (QC) Centre.
The QC Centre plays a crucial role in Vermont Sales’ commitment to quality, assessing tool features, redesigning when necessary, and providing feedback to manufacturers. This feedback loop results in continuous product improvements, benefiting both the South African market and the global community. Through this initiative, Vermont Sales ensures that their tools meet the highest standards, reducing returns and enhancing the reputation of their brands.
However, the success of Vermont Sales has been driven by more than just family leadership. The company has grown through the dedication of a strong and loyal team. Out of 300 employees, only 78 have left over the years, with many having been with the company for over two decades. This extraordinary level of staff retention reflects a workplace culture rooted in commitment, expertise, and shared vision.
THE RETURN OF OPEN DAY: A GAME-CHANGER FOR THE INDUSTRY
The Vermont Open Day, last hosted in 2019 before the Covid-19 pandemic, made a triumphant return this year, reaffirming its status as an irreplaceable event in the hardware industry. Unlike the company’s smaller themed expos, which have been successfully hosted over the past five years, the Open Day Festival offers an unparalleled experience with live demonstrations, expert guidance from international principals, exclusive product showcases, and special deals from the famous ‘Bargain Cage’.
Attended by international suppliers such as Kreg, MPS, Festool, Alpen, Magnum by Graco, and Multi-Sharp, the event provided retailers with direct access to the best technology and industry expertise. It also served as a unique platform for the Vermont Sales team to interact with customers and gain valuable insights. Many team members experienced the Open Day Festival for the first time, reinforcing Vermont Sales’ culture of learning and continuous improvement.
In addition to the Open Day, Vermont Sales has hosted nine themed exhibitions in its dedicated expo centre over the past five years. These events have focused on individual brands and product categories, providing in-depth showcases of tools, accessories, and working techniques. While these brandcentric expos were highly successful, they could not fully replace the scale and impact of a comprehensive Open Day Festival, where retailers can see the full Vermont Sales range in action, interact with international principals, and access exclusive industry intelligence.
It was the overwhelming positive feedback from customers and partners that prompted the return of the Open Day Festival in 2025.
This decision clearly displays the event’s significance in building industry connections, providing hands-on product experiences, and strengthening Vermont Sales’ position as a leader in the South African hardware sector.
As Vermont Sales celebrates four decades of success, its focus remains on innovation, quality, and service excellence. The return of Open Day signals not only a milestone in the company’s history but also a renewed commitment to shaping the future of the industry. The combination of local product development, a strong emphasis on quality testing, and ongoing investments in retailer engagement ensure that Vermont Sales will continue to lead the way in the South African hardware market for years to come.

OPEN DAY FESTIVAL
The Open Day Festival
Spanning three action-packed days from Friday 13 to Sunday 15 March, the event was a true celebration of innovation, partnerships, and the unwavering commitment that has defined Vermont Sales for four decades.
Festivities kicked off on the evening of March 12 with an exclusive gathering for Vermont Sales’ top 20 customers. During this intimate event, Mindi Hunt highlighted a common thread among them: most were family-owned
and run businesses, reinforcing the deeply personal and enduring relationships that drive the industry.
The main event officially opened on the Friday, drawing over 750 attendees from more than 400 dealers – including industry giants like DIY Depot, Rouberto Hardware, Mica, Essential, Wannabuild, Buco, Powerbuild, Build It, Brights Hardware, BMG, Prime Trading, DIY Shop, and Legacy Industrial
Supplies. The atmosphere was electric, with a well-organised setup that fostered networking, knowledge-sharing, and unbeatable deals.
The momentum carried through the weekend, with Saturday seeing similar attendance levels, and Sunday exceeding expectations with remarkable visitor numbers.
The three-day festival proved to be a resounding success, reaffirming Vermont Sales’ role as a leader in the industry.

A GATHERING OF GLOBAL INDUSTRY LEADERS
Vermont Sales’ reputation extends far beyond South Africa, evident in the presence of international partners who flew in to be part of this milestone event.
Paolo Carollo and Alpen MD Claudia Zoff emphasised the depth of their connection with Vermont Sales: “While officially celebrating 25 years of partnership, our relationship spans the full 40 years, starting with the supply of drill sets. Vermont Sales is one of Alpen’s most important partners, not just in turnover, but in trust. This relationship is built on mutual respect – where a handshake is as good as a contract.”
Like Vermont Sales, Alpen remains a family-owned business, reinforcing the strong foundation upon which their partnership is built.
Magnum by Graco’s team – Tina Rykers, Simon Priest, Christopher Campher, and Hendrik Papenfus – were on-site showcasing the art of ‘Painting like a Pro’ using the Magnum system.
Rykers noted: “The sheer number of decision-makers in one place is incredible. This event is a true showcase, and we are proud to have chosen Vermont Sales as our South African partner. After a successful trial, we are thrilled to use this platform to launch our brand nationwide.”
MPS Blades, another family-run enterprise, was represented by Sebastiano Danese and Petra Pott.
When asked why they travelled across continents for this Open Day, they explained: “We have a long-standing relationship with Vermont Sales, and their Open Day is an incredible opportunity. Not only do we get to meet customers in one place, but we also gain insight into the South African retail market and new possibilities for growth. MPS blades are true German quality – the highest standard in saw blades – and Vermont Sales has been a phenomenal partner for 38 years.”
Ernst Plender, area sales manager for Festool, shared the brand’s excitement for its upcoming 100th anniversary in 2025 and their strong bond with Vermont Sales: “Festool operates through subsidiaries worldwide and select import partners – Vermont Sales is one of 15 global import partners. Our 9-year relationship has been fantastic, marked by regular cross-visits for training and strategy. I am thrilled Vermont Sales brought back the Open Day. It’s a true business card for the company – an event that allows us to meet numerous customers and see what other suppliers are doing in just three days.”

OPEN DAY FESTIVAL
Mark Owen, International business development manager of Kreg, another family-owned brand, spoke passionately about their mission and their reason for attending the Vermont Sales Open Day: “Kreg takes customers from raw wood to a finished product, offering a complete system. We constantly innovate to lower the barriers of entry for aspiring woodworkers, making professional results achievable with just a drill and a circular saw. Our new benchtop dowel-making unit, which costs a fraction of professional domino machines, is a game-changer.”
Brian Gardener of Multi-Sharp, a UKbased family business specialising in tool sharpeners, explained why he made the long journey to South Africa: “Vermont Sales is simply great to deal with. Even though Multi-Sharp is smaller compared to some of the other brands they carry, they invest valuable time and effort into promoting us – so I do the same for them.
Vermont understands the importance of maintenance in a market where tools are a significant investment. Multi-Sharp offers affordable solutions to extend tool lifespan, providing value that retailers can pass on to their customers. We are committed to quality and Longevity.”
He adds that, being able to share and demonstrate these products to South African retailers was an opportunity not to be missed.
Owen’s 14-year partnership with Vermont Sales has been instrumental in expanding Kreg’s footprint, with Vermont always being the first to hear about new innovations.
AN UNFORGETTABLE CELEBRATION
“This was a most extraordinary culmination of months of planning and work. The reaction of both our customers and suppliers made every second worthwhile. The suppliers said they had never experienced a private company putting on a show like ours anywhere. Most of the customers loved the displays and the hands-on demo stations,” says Mindi Hunt.
The overwhelming attendance and international presence underscored the significance of Vermont Sales in the industry. The event was meticulously planned and flawlessly executed, offering a dynamic environment where business and relationships thrived.
The buying never stopped, exclusive deals were made, and Vermont Sales’ 40-year legacy was celebrated in a way that truly reflected its success –through innovation, partnership, and an unrelenting commitment to the trade.
With such a resounding success, Vermont Sales is set to continue leading the way in the South African hardware market. Here’s to another four decades of excellence – see you at the next Open Day Festival!

powerbuild hosts second annual charity golf day proudly sponsored by gluedevil
Celebrating 30 years of excellence, GLUEDEVIL proudly served as the title sponsor for Powerbuild’s second annual charity golf day.
Following the overwhelming success of its inaugural event last year at Kyalami, Powerbuild proudly hosted its second annual charity golf day at the prestigious Wingate Country Club in Pretoria. This highly anticipated event brought together golf enthusiasts, corporate teams, and charitable supporters for a day of camaraderie, competition, and, most importantly, giving back to the community.
A DAY FOR A WORTHY CAUSE
All proceeds from the event were dedicated to ‘Good Morning Angels’, a life-changing initiative spearheaded by Jacaranda FM and renowned radio personality Martin Bester. For over seven years, this programme has provided a voice
to the voiceless, identifying individuals and communities in need and making a tangible difference in their lives. Through the generosity of Powerbuild and its supporters, this event further empowered Good Morning Angels to continue their vital work.

AN EXCITING FORMAT AND FRIENDLY COMPETITION
The tournament followed a 4-Ball Alliance format, with two scores counting per hole. To add an extra level of excitement, all teams took part in a Scramble Drive format on all holes, including the challenging Par 3s. This strategic setup encouraged teamwork and added a fun, dynamic element to the competition.
Each team had to use every player’s drive at least four times, with two players’ drives being used five times. This rule ensured that every participant played a key role in their team’s overall performance.
ADDING TO THE FUN: THE FINES SYSTEM
One of the day’s most entertaining aspects was the fines system, which kept players on their toes while adding a light hearted, social element to the game.
Each team received four fine cards, which were rotated among members based on their ‘performance’ during the round:
• Dam Duiker – Given to the last player to land in the water on a hole
• Beach Patrol – Assigned to the last player to find themselves in a bunker
• 3 Putt King – Awarded to the last player who needed three or more putts to complete a hole
• MIA (Missing in Action) – Given to the last player to hit their ball out of bounds or who appeared to be ‘wandering’ according to their teammates.

With perfect weather, competitive spirit, and a shared commitment to giving back, Powerbuild’s second annual charity golf day was a resounding success, and made a meaningful contribution to the Good Morning Angels initiative. As Powerbuild continues to strengthen its commitment to community upliftment, supporters eagerly anticipate an even bigger and better event next year.
