As May draws to a close, it's important to reflect on World Hunger Month and World Hunger Day (28 May) – particularly on what these mean for South Africa's laboratory and food science community. While many of us analyse, test and ensure food safety in our laboratories, millions of South Africans face the daily challenge of affording even basic nutrition.
The Pietermaritzburg Economic Justice and Dignity Group reports that the average South African household now spends approximately R5 452 per month on a basic food basket – roughly R1 268 per week. For individuals, daily food expenditure ranges from R65 for basic groceries to over R300 when dining out is included. These figures reveal a sobering reality: food security remains precarious for many.
Examining food price trends reveals a complex picture. Statistics South Africa reports that some staples have decreased – rice dropped from R29.01 per kilogram in March 2025 to R27.82 in March 2026, while eggs declined 6.3% year-on-year. Yet paradoxically, overall household food basket costs continue rising, driven predominantly by fuel price increases that affect transportation and distribution.
Current prices paint the daily struggle: bread costs approximately R19 per 700g loaf, milk R20 per litre, eggs R69 for 18, and chicken R69 per kilogram. For families already stretched thin, even modest increases compound food insecurity.
FoodForward SA's Hunger Month campaign aims to raise 10 million meals this May –where just 47 cents provides one meal. You can choose to add up to 10 meals with your Food Lovers’ Market shop.
As laboratory professionals ensuring food safety, quality and nutritional integrity, you play a crucial role in South Africa's food system.
Your work enables efficient production, reduces waste, and builds consumer confidence. Perhaps this World Hunger Month reminds us that scientific excellence must ultimately serve accessibility –ensuring safe, nutritious food reaches all South Africans, not just those who can afford it.
Yours sincerely

Raman spectroscopy for fast, non-destructive material identification
Among modern spectroscopic techniques, Raman analysis stands out for its ability to identify solid and liquid materials rapidly without the need for reagents, solvents, or sample preparation.
The NanoRam handheld Raman spectrometer from Metrohm brings this capability directly to routine analytical environments, supporting fast, non destructive screening wherever materials need to be verified.
Enabling analysis within seconds
In many industrial and laboratory workflows, uncertainty around material identity can lead to production delays, reprocessing, or unnecessary waste. NanoRam enables analysis typically within seconds, allowing materials to be checked immediately at the point of use rather than relying solely on central laboratory testing for basic identification tasks. Measurements are performed non destructively, with no consumables required, preserving samples for further investigation where necessary while minimising handling steps. By supporting early identification, NanoRam helps prevent downstream issues such as rejected batches or disposal of unsuitable materials, contributing to more efficient workflows.
1064 nm Raman laser
A key feature that distinguishes NanoRam is its use of a 1064 nm Raman laser, which significantly reduces fluorescence when analysing many organic or coloured substances. This allows reliable identification of materials that may be difficult to analyse using shorter wavelength Raman systems, expanding the range of samples that can be

ELGA LabWater PURELAB systems validated for ultra-low PFAS water
ELGA LabWater has validated its PURELAB
Chorus and PURELAB flex water purification systems for ultra-low per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) content, addressing the critical need for contamination-free water in sensitive analytical testing. Independent testing by an ISO 9001-accredited laboratory demonstrated that the majority of 34-36
targeted PFAS compounds remained below quantification limits, with only a few analytes detected at low nanogram-perlitre levels.
Rigorous protocol employs NEN-ISO 21675 analysis via LC-MS/MS
ELGA LabWater PURELAB systems deliver ultra-low PFAS levels, with testing showing majority of targeted compounds below quantification limits.
The validation protocol simulated three weeks of operational use, with daily dispensing of eight-litres and one-litre sample collection for external analysis. Testing employed the NENISO 21675 method utilising solidphase extraction and liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS), achieving reproducibility with coefficient of variation ranging from 0.9% to 21.6%.
