When there’s a list Of peOple wanting to give away their own money, you know you’re dealing with something special! That’s Awesome Foundation Newmarket, a giving circle operated by the Chamber that helps bring ideas to life through microgrants. Celebrating its 11th year, the chapter is one of more than 80 around the world. Each independent chapter runs a bit differently, but the gist is the same: 10 trustees pool their $100 contributions to form a monthly grant. The Newmarket chapter focuses specifically on ideas that benefit youth and anyone can apply, including groups, organizations and individuals, says Diane Farmer, the Newmarket chapter’s Dean of Awesomeness. Youth-led initiatives are particularly welcomed. “There are no age restrictions—we’ve had Awesome winners as young as 10.”

What dO bright red curbs and six local schools have in common? They’re all part of the Active School Travel (AST) pilot program currently underway in Newmarket.
Led by Smart Commute Central York (SCCY), in partnership with York Region, Town of Newmarket, YRDSB (York Region District School Board) and YCDSB (York Catholic District School Board), the program aims to reduce traffic congestion in school zones, making it safer for more students to walk and cycle to school.In addition to

On-site observations of pedestrians, cyclists, and traffic, including drop-offs and pick-ups conducted at the six pilot schools, have been used to measure and compare behaviour in school zones prior to the program. While still preliminary, there have been noted improvements in the way the space is accessed and used, as drivers have become mindful of the red curbs which are designed to prevent drop-offs, parking, and idling in no-parking zones.

attraction and marketing: where work meets Play Newmarket businesses have demonstrated incredible tenacity over the pandemic. The Town, in partnership with the Newmarket Chamber of Commerce, expanded the Choose Local campaign in 2021 by running both a summer and winter campaign and contest. The 2021 holiday campaign resulted in over $70,000 in local spending, experienced double the engagement by residents from 2020 to 2021 and captured the incredible spirit of Newmarket residents who supported our businesses. During the contest, we asked those entering to share why they felt supporting local was so important. The Town launched a Random Acts of Downtown Shopping program that distributed $20,000 worth of shopping vouchers for local downtown businesses. The goal of this campaign was to attract existing and new customers to Main Street and celebrate the positive energy and vibrancy of the Business Improvement Area (BIA) district. Since the launch of the strategy, the Mayor and Council, the Newmarket Economic Development Advisory Committee (NEDAC), and Town staff have aggressively moved ahead to advance a variety of initiatives.
Building an entrepreneurial eco-system In 2022, the Town of Newmarket is attending the internationally renowned Collision Conference in Toronto. The Town and the Treefrog Accelerator are sharing the opportunities for internationally owned start-ups to participate in an international scale up program designed to give businesses critical skills to find their footing in the Canadian market. The international program will expose companies from around the world to the incredible benefits of doing business in Newmarket and help them navigate the Canadian business system. Treefrog will also be highlighting the regional program (a partnership between Newmarket Chamber of Commerce, York University and Treefrog) and the resounding success of the many businesses who have taken advantage of the free accelerator program. The Regional program leads scale-up businesses through an intensive accelerator program and includes opportunities to participate in a Schulich mini-MBA, a free Newmarket Chamber of Commerce membership and access to leading mentors to help with everything from business planning, pitch creation and venture capital investments. the Bowman collection one of the most accessible art collections in Newmarket can be found at the Newmarket public library. acquired in 1998 with assistance from a donation by Newmarket residents dorothy and Jim bowman and daughter carol, the bowman collection consists of 48 masterful and eclectic paintings and several sculptures, all by one-time local artists.

N BRAND DESIGN treefrog inc., a Newmarket-based digital agency has an office space that matches every bit of its strong brand personality. “applying the treefrog brand aesthetic of clean, airy, and vibrant, we set about transforming an old car dealership that was a blast from the ’70s, into a bright and open environment,” says Stephanie FlexibilityUprichard.was key. “We wanted to create multipleuse areas that were flexible for all types of work and tasks to be done,” she says. “treefrog has lots of events and large meetings and we needed to make sure we had flexible areas to transform into the spaces they needed for specific events.” the clean aesthetic belies numerous thoughtful design and elevated efficiency elements. these include easy-to-clean carpet tiles for warmth and sound absorption, acoustics panels and portable large-scale lEgo-like bricks to accommodate various privacy needs. “treefrog is not a new space and although we spruce it up every few years, it looks like it was just designed,” says Uprichard. “it’s an eight-year-old design. that’s how impactful designing on brand is.”

Microbreweries are part of Newmarket Main Street’s renaissance, says Mike D’Angela, who along with his wife, Donna, owns The George Brew House & Eatery. “We have a wide selection of styles and flavours to satisfy purists and adventurous beer drinkers alike,” he says.
While not a restaurant, patrons can order from local partner caterers and food trucks or bring their own meals. the venue can also be rented for private events.
