Just a few examples include being voted the best Main Street in the country, a google etown award recipient, continuous recognition as one of the best places to live in Canada and recently being recognized as one of the top 21 intelligent communities across the globe that is ready to face the 21st century.

As we move forward into a new decade, collaboration and innovation will continue to drive our success.

MESSAGE FROM the CHAIR

I

t’s hard to believe that we’re already 20 years into the new millennium. It’s interesting to see the trends that have emerged over these years. No surprise—online shopping has turned out to be a big one. Back in 2000, online shopping was still in its infancy. It showed promise but shipping was expensive, and the wait for an item was typically fairly long. Fast forward to today when you can often order an item in the morning and find it on your doorstep later that night.

While online shopping has become a big

consumer movement, it’s gratifying to see that we’ve also in many ways returned to our roots.

Shopping local is experiencing a huge resurgence as more and more people appreciate the unique offerings they can find close to home. (It’s also become crystal clear that if we want great communities, we need to support the businesses in them.)

It doesn’t have to be an “either or” scenario of course, but it’s important to get out and support local businesses. There are a lot of terrific ones in Newmarket. Discover them in this special edition of Your Business which includes our popular annual business directory and features a comprehensive listing of our member businesses. The directory is a great way to easily source products and services available in the area.

MESSAGE FROM the PRESIDENT & CEO

W

hen I was kid, I’d sometimes spend time thinking about all the miraculous things I’d experience as an adult. The futuristic cartoon, The Jetsons, was a popular rerun and it was fun to imagine life with flying cars, a robot housekeeper and a home in the sky.

The series is set in 2062 but we don’t have to wait till then to see a world full of innovation.

We are living in a time when many of us carry smartphones and live in homes filled with smart devices like Ring, Amazon Echo and Google Nest.

These days, even cities and towns can be intelligent. In October 2019, the Intelligent Community Forum (ICF) named the world’s Smart21 Communities of 2020. Newmarket is one of them, alongside four others in Canada as

well as communities in France, Estonia, Taiwan, Australia, Brazil and more. The recognition is based on six factors; advocacy, broadband, digital equality, innovation, knowledge workforce, and sustainability. Smart21 communities apply these principles to help foster local prosperity, economic growth, social health and cultural richness.

The list of communities has been been narrowed to seven and in June 2020, one will be named the 2020 Intelligent City of the Year.

Though Newmarket didn’t rank further this year, it’s clearly on an innovative trajectory designed to sustainably move our town into the foreseeable future.

e hear a lot of misconceptions about the Chamber. The biggest is that we’re owned by the Town. We’re not. That means we can’t replace green bins, license your pet or help with traffic lights (just some of the issues that have come our way over the years). But our proximity to the GO station and our Smart Commute program means we're pretty decent with directions and train and bus info!

SO, WHAT EXACTLY IS A CHAMBER AND WHAT DO WE DO? At our core, we're a not-for-profit membership-based business association. We're here to help our members in a variety of ways. For example, we provide networking and learning opportunities, and also advocate on behalf of businesses at all levels of government. We work hard to contribute positively to the broader Newmarket community.

ach month, Awesome Foundation Newmarket does something pretty spectacular—it helps make Newmarket an even better place to live.

Through its monthly $1,000 grant, it has helped bring books into schools, supported lunch programs, given youths post-secondary education aid and so much more. Since launching in 2012, the chapter has given away more than $85,000 in grant money!

The Newmarket chapter is part of the Awesome Foundation, a global initiative made up of autonomous chapters interested in advancing awesome in the universe. It’s actually not a foundation at all, or even a charity. Instead, it’s more like a giving circle where every month 10 generous people known as trustees each donate $100 to a grant.

In Newmarket, we’ve opted to fund ideas that focus on children and youth. We’ve funded big ideas and small ones, helped large organizations and supported teams of one. There are no limits to Awesome. (And no strings attached either!)

If you’ve got an idea that benefits youth in Newmarket, consider this an open invitation to apply for an Awesome Foundation Newmarket grant. You just may receive $1,000 to help implement it!

ver the past several years Newmarket has been buzzing with construction projects to support our growing community and decrease traffic congestion. But it’s not all about four wheels! Improvements to bike infrastructure promote an active and sustainable culture and are making it easier than ever to cycle around town. So, what are you waiting for? Hop on your bike for your next journey!

Not sure where to start?

Here are some ways to get involved in cycling: RENT A BIKE Whether it’s an electric, mountain or cruiser bike you’re after, BikeSports on Main St. rents them all! This is also a great way to test-drive a bike before purchasing. Helmet and lock included (April – October).

PARTICIPATE IN BIKE TO SCHOOL WEEK (MAY 25–29) Driving kids to school causes chaos and congestion in school zones and is a serious safety issue. Not to mention the kids walking and cycling are likely getting to school faster than those sitting in traffic.

Plan a safe route and leave the car at home.

The more kids that bike and walk, the safer our school zones will be for everyone.

ATTEND SMART COMMUTE’S ANNUAL BIKE TO WORK DAY EVENT, MONDAY, MAY 25TH! Cycle to Riverwalk Commons between 7:30 to 9:00 am and enjoy a free breakfast, receive a cool new t-shirt, visit exhibits and enter to win great prizes!

N EWM ARKET CYCLES !

Connected bike lane projects, including an East-West Bikeway that runs from Davis Dr. West to Harry Walker Parkway and a route that runs along Main Street North from Davis Drive to Bristol Rd. are just a few. Many routes connect to the scenic Tom Taylor Trail which then links to the 121 km Lake to Lake route, a recreational and commuter trail that is 81% complete and will connect Lake Simcoe to Lake Ontario. Then there’s the new Yonge St. rapidway that includes raised and separated bike lanes along with newly-completed left turn bike boxes which are really the icing on the cycling infrastructure cake!

There’s something magical about the drive-in and we’re lucky to have one in nearby Sharon. For something even closer, check out the Town’s family-friendly Moonlight Movies during the summer. Don’t forget to bring lawn chairs, blankets and bug spray!

E ELMAN W. CAMPBELL E: If you’ve never been to the Elman W. Campbell Museum, make this the year you finally check it out. Located on Main St., the museum helps tell Newmarket’s rich history beginning with its earliest settlers. In addition to special exhibits and events, the Museum hosts the Victorian Mother’s Day Tea, Halloween Boo-seum event, a holiday Gallery of Trees featuring decorations from different time periods and more.

For something a little different, take a trip to Gateway Casinos Innisfil (innisfil.gatewaycasinos.com) just a short drive north of Newmarket. The gaming floor offers 25-plus games, including baccarat, blackjack, roulette and poker-based table games, along with its nearly 1,000 slot machines. If you get hungry, stop in at Getaway Restaurant where you’ll find breakfast to dinner choices.

There are a number of places to enjoy horseback riding in the Newmarket area, including the Royal Canadian Riding Academy (rcra.ca) and the Whitchurch Riding Academy & Summer Riding Camp (whitchurchriding.com).

For something truly unique, let the equine team at Dreamwinds Equine Assisted Learning Centre (dreamwinds.ca) take you through an experiential workshop. From corporate events and team building to personal development (fun nights out include Date and Ladies Nights), these special experiences are a great way to strengthen communication and leadership skills.

FEATURE JET TO J JOKERS J: HILL Get out and enjoy the public hiking trails of the Koffler Scientific Reserve at Jokers Hill, an internationally recognized site for cutting-edge research and education in biodiversity, ecology and conservation biology. Home to Ontario’s largest remaining stand of old-growth hardwood, the Reserve’s 350 hectares are a mosaic of wetlands and forests.

Put on your cowboy boots and get ready to dance the night away! A much-anticipated tradition, the Magna Hoedown (hoedown.ca)) takes place every September over two special nights. Along with an incredible country music line up (past performers include Blue Rodeo, Alan Doyle and Paul Brandt), there’s delicious food and a chance to win some cold hard cash! If that doesn’t draw you in, consider this: The Hoedown is York Region’s largest annual fundraiser and since its inception, the event has raised more than $13 million for local charities and community groups.

NATIONAL TEN N: NEWMARKET MINUTE PLAY FESTIVAL Returning for its fourth season to the Old Town Hall, July 20–26, 2020, the Newmarket National Ten Minute Play Festival (NNPF) showcases the original work of 24 playwrights and the talent of artists who work both on the stage and behind the scenes. Get out and explore Newmarket’s extensive trail system (you’ll find trail guides at the Chamber). Along with gorgeous scenery, the Tom Taylor trail features stunning Ojibwe-inspired trail kilometre markers. Crafted by artists Donald Chrétien and Jim Menken, each carved wood and metal totem represents an animal or aspect of nature and features a plaque that describes its symbolic significance.

Newmarket (newmarket.ca) has over 45 parks to explore, including All Our Kids Playpark aka dinosaur park, where kids can have fun digging up buried “bones”. Across Newmarket you’ll find splash pads, picnic areas and parkettes, playgrounds, tennis courts, ball diamonds and soccer pitches. There’s even an off-leash park for your four-legged friends!

Love craft beer? You’re in luck! There are not one but two Craft Beer Festivals in Newmarket. The summer version happens Saturday, June 19th and 20th at the Magna Centre. Along with featuring some spectacular craft beer (including Chamber member Red Thread Brewing Co.), you’ll find wine and cider and beer as well as food vendors and trucks, a marketplace, DJ and live music and more. Steep yourself in Newmarket’s rich history at one of the Town’s Discovery Walking Tours. The annual Ocotober Ghosts of Old Town Hall tour is a particular favourite and always sells out quickly. Participants get a guided walking tour of Main St. and the Old Town Hall and hear tales of spooks, specters and eerie events dating back to the 1880s.

T: TREK TO OLD TOWN HALL

A number of public events and exhibits take place throughout the year at the Old Town Hall. Located at 460 Botsford Street, the twostorey building first opened its doors back in 1883, operating as Farmers' Market on its lower level while the upper level acted as an auditorium for public assemblies. Other uses over the years include a police station, theatre and courthouse. A new atrium extension has been added to the south side of the building and renovations and improvements have been made to make it fully accessible; today the building acts as a culture hub for theatre, music, dance, arts and more.

We just might be a town of fairs, festivals and parades because Newmarket has a bunch of them! There are awesome things happening year-round but with back to back (and even overlapping) events happening throughout the summer it’s a particularly fun time of year. Some to check out: North Newmarket Lions’ Fairy Lake Artisans’ Festival, York Pride, and the Town’s Canada Day Kanata and Busker festivals. Looking for more ideas? YORK-DURHAM HERITAGE RAILWAY (YDHR)

Take a trip back in time! The YDHR (ydhr.ca) operates regular excursions on weekends between June through October and visits with Santa in late November and early December. Look for special events throughout the year, including the Roaring Railway 20s Party, a Great Gadsby-themed event March 28th and 29th, and the Wizards Festival & Hallow’s Express Train, October 2–4.

Z: GAZE AT THE NIGHT SKY

Located a short drive away, the Richmond Hill David Dunlap Observatory first opened its doors back in 1935. Home to the largest telescope in Canada, today the city-owned facility offers the opportunity to experience the wonders of astronomy and stargazing through a variety of family programs, heritage tours, and lectures where participants can explore the night sky and learn about the cosmos. CELESTICA NEWMARKET Lab Testing Services That Unlock Potential in Your Business

elestica Newmarket opened its doors in the fall of 2018, embarking on a new chapter in the company’s 25-year history that began in Toronto. Incredibly innovating and awe inspiring technological advances are happening in the Engineering Services Laboratories. Read on for a conversation with Jason Bragg, Quality, Reliability and Microelectronics Assembly Lab Manager to learn about the labs and the services that are offered in Newmarket.

Q: What engineering test services do you offer in the Newmarket lab?

A: At Celestica we support our customers across different markets using our lab testing services such as; analysis of electronic card and product assemblies, industrial electro-mechanical products, and printed wiring board assemblies. We have the experience and background to quickly understand the root cause of field failures, and assess reliability and challenges across industries and markets.

In the lab we specialize in product validation at various stages of development. Our team has the expertise to test our customers’ prototypes along with product robustness limits, and product qualification. From failure analysis to rigorous material explorations we have a wide array of testing available for our customers. Some of our services that are in demand are environment chamber testing, vibration testing, FTIR analysis, x-ray, cross sectional analysis, and much more.

Essentially, we ensure your technology works the way it’s intended, when you need it to work.

Q: Can you describe some of the complex technologies you are working on in the labs?

A: Some of the most complex work we do is with our customers in the field of microelectronics assembly. Hardware manufacturers are under intense pressure to achieve advancements in miniaturization, improve device performance, lower costs and increase speed time-to-market. These factors have a significant impact on design and production processes.

As consumers, we expect precision from these ever-shrinking electronic devices in extreme conditions like high vibration environments, high heat and freezing conditions. Our lab services are equipped to set the test case for those environments and provide the expertise to make technology work when it’s too important to fail.

Q: What are your customer demographics?

A: Our customers are anyone who needs our support to enable their hardware innovations. We have worked with the world’s biggest brands as well as sole proprietorship entrepreneurs and start-ups.

The access to our services is as simple as reaching out to me for discussion, potentially a lab tour and we can go from there. We have some flexibility in payment methods for our lab services and we can manage small, quick turnaround projects.

Q: Is there anything unique to the Celestica engineering lab testing services that you would like to highlight?

A: There are two things I think are unique. Our

lab services personnel are world-class leading engineers and scientists that are driven by curiosity and ingenuity. They are incredibly skilled with an average 21-year tenure in the industry.

Secondly, our testing services are run alongside the manufacturing floor. We can make sure what works in the lab, also works when it’s time for our customers’ to build their products, whether they are manufacturing them with us or not.

We have a proud legacy of providing reliable solutions in mission critical situations.
