I WAS LEFT FOR DEAD BRUTALLY BEATEN... Jacques Lapergue who was attacked by a mob during a visit to Zambia

...But I want to forgive my attackers A BUSINESSMAN left for dead after being beaten by a mob in Zambia has revealed that he wants to meet his attackers... to FORGIVE them.

Jacques Laperg ue, from Brad ford, was pounced on after he found a corpse in a street in the village of Chipata, Zambia. A baying mob brutally beat the stained-glass factory boss thinking he was connected to the death. The Christian missionary told New Life how he was:  Beaten beyond recognition, temporarily losing the sight in one eye

 Stripped naked and humiliated in front of more than 40 locals  Made to walk on stones in bare feet But despite the sickening attack, which left him needing treatment at the town’s intensive care unit, Mr Lapergue prayed throughout his ordeal. He said: “I told them that Jesus was coming soon and they just attacked me. They tried to strangle me, and at one point, one of them told me I was going to die that night.

NAKED “Despite them shouting and beating me, I had no fear and remained calm. I prayed in silence

because when I prayed out loud the attacks would increase.” After being dragged across the village and having alcohol thrown on his body, police rescued the barely-conscious Mr Lapergue. His injuries were so severe that he was taken to an intensive care unit at the town’s hospital – and handcuffed to the bed by police who wrongly suspected him of murder. After being released from hospital, Mr Lapergue was flung into a Zambian jail, and spent a week in a prison cell with 80 inmates. But the plucky missionary decided to use his imprisonment to talk about his Christian faith. He said: “My first night in jail the  Continued on Page 2

She went through the horror of watching her mother being beheaded and the rest of her family being brutally killed by the evil regime. Frida was left wandering homeless until she was found by a Christian woman, who then led her to Christ. She tells her harrowing story in Chosen to Die, Destined to Live. And in the book she explains how she has learned to forgive the people who took the lives of her family. I forgive mob that beat me

 Continued from Page 1 conditions were atrocious. Totally inhuman. I suffered so much. There were 80 of us crushed like sardines; there were feet in the back of my head and in my face. We were completely packed against each other. “If I moved at all I had to dislodge everybody and you have to be careful in a jail because not everybody would be nice about that. It was the worst I had felt in my life.” Mr Laperg ue was incarcerated in the cramped cell between 4pm and 8am every night for a week. But he said that when he was free from the cell, he met with others and they used the time for praising God.

A GROUP of Brits got together recently to embark on a mission trip of a different kind. The group was made up of nine members of Elim churches from across the UK. In addition to the £350 paid for expenses, each participant helped raise £1,650 in sponsorship to go towards City Gates Academy, Philippines; Hope Village, Malawi; and Widow’s Mite, Kosovo. ‘Plan could change UK’ A proposal by Christian MPs to dramatically change the values that underpin policy decisions could transform Britain for the better, the General Director of the Evangelical Alliance has said. The Rev Joel Edwards welcomed t he repor t by five Christian politicians. The report, entitled Faith

Speaking at an anti-gun a nd k n i fe c r i me eve nt at Redbridge College, Rikki McCalla told the 100 students gathered about the time he was shot while parked up at a McDonalds drive-through in South London in 2005. He added: “I looked down and saw blood covering my jeans. I put hand up to my neck and my finger went into my neck. I still have the bullet in my neck and no feeling in my right side. What I want you to know is that if you are involved in any gun or knife crime, you might not be as lucky as I have been. I’m here by the grace of God.”

Faith’s kept us going since Jimmy’s death The mother of London teenager Jimmy Mizen – who died in an alleged street attack – has said her family’s faith has kept them going. And she vowed not to let bitterness destroy her family. The death of altar boy Jimmy shook the community of Lee, southeast London, last month. His distraught mum Margaret said she and her family were finding it difficult to believe that the 16-year-old had gone. But she added: “It is our faith that keeps us going. We would never cope otherwise. Lots of people have given us cards and flowers. God is with us and in our family.” Mrs Mizen urged people not to blame the family of the suspect in Jimmy’s killing. She said: “Anger breeds anger, and bitterness w i ll NO BITTERNESS... Margaret destroy my family if I’m not and Barry Mizen careful – and I won’t allow that to happen.” Mrs Mizen’s comments followed a memorial service at St Thomas More Comprehensive on Monday, which would have been Jimmy’s last day there as a pupil. She described her son as a saint. “He was the loveliest, gentlest giant. He was loved by everyone, by his school, the church and his family. “In the 16 years and one TRAGIC... REGGAE ARTIST IN MEN-TOR APPEAL! PLEA TO HELP TROUBLED YOUTHS GOSPEL reggae artist David Williams has urged men to help mentor troubled young people in London’s toughest boroughs. Mr Williams – who is known as Watchman – set up his organisation RAP (Reaching All People) Mentors two years ago to help young offenders. And now Mr Williams, who has been awarded the title of National Mentor after mentoring thousands of young people in London in the past 10 years, wants men to help his cause after being contracted to run programmes with some of the most challenging 11- to 18-year-olds. At a recent recruitment event, 180 men from as far afield as Ipswich and Belgium turned up at a hotel in Croydon to hear how they could become a RAP mentor. He said: “I feel greatly honoured to be given the title of National Mentor, particularly when I think about my own personal journey. “During my youth I was an insecure and angry young man who couldn’t read or write, and was in and out of prison for various crimes.

CHALLENGING “I fully identify and empathise with the young people I work with, and I give them hope that it is possible to change, as I have gone through experiences similar to theirs and come out all right. “Although the young people we will work with have been deemed as very challenging, they will be on our programme because they have expressed a desire to change their lives.” Mr Williams explained how he decided to change his life after spending years in different jails. It was in 1991 that he was serving a sentence in the tough Bellmarsh jail that he

David Williams, aka Watchman decided to start to learn to read and write. He practised writing by copying his girlfriend’s letters and started to read using the only book in his cell – the Bible. Mr Williams said: “I didn’t understand the grace of God but I knew about the law of God. “I still had this anger but I still knew God was a loving God. “I would share this to certain guys within the prison and people started giving their lives to Jesus, getting saved through what I was saying to them. It was like I was a Christian but I didn’t know it!” Since then, Mr Williams has gone on to release four albums as his alter ego Watchman and set up RAP and Harvesting Man’s Potential (HMP), an organisation which works in prisons to teach literacy, numeracy and principles for successful living. Mr Williams hopes that his RAP Mentors programme will also contribute to the ending of ‘postcode wars’ between different gangs, as a result of bringing together young people from different areas to participate in various activities. Maybe we have lost that simple touch, that simple knowing that God exists, that we can approach him.” The other problem for the churches was that Britain had become a multiracial, multicultural country. Sir Cliff added that while freedom of religion was a good thing, if the churches wanted to grow they had to become more “combative” and “prove that this is a relevant faith; this is a rational, viable, relevant philosophy”. Sir Cliff has never hidden his faith and donates to charity all profits from any work he does in relation to his religion. He added that the secret of success for pop stars in a business known for its shorttermism was to remain relevant and up to date with new technology.

There was a family with young children living there, as well as a woman who was nine months’ pregnant. She was the one I had seen on the mountain when we were trying to escape. The babies and young children were screaming with terror. There were the sounds of clubs crashing down on people’s heads and machetes slicing into their bodies. I heard one child cry out: “Please forgive me. Please forgive me. I promise I will never be a Tutsi again.” Gradually, the screams subsided as one by one they were all murdered. We heard the dull thud as each body was thrown into the toilet of the house and the door slammed shut. The pregnant woman was obviously not yet dead and we heard her moans. After a few minutes, silence. Shaken to the core with the horror of what we had heard, we huddled together. Trembling. Terrified. Next they came to us. First came a young man. He was covered in blood and the machete in his hand was still dripping with blood. We recognised him. He had been in the football team papa had formed for my brothers and the local lads in the area. He looked at us. Then he turned round and went back to the other killers who had surrounded the house. “There’s no one here,” he told them. “They’ve all gone.” Then the leader of the killers came into the house and saw us. His name was Gakuba. He was an elder in the Seventh Day Adventist church. When we saw him, we all immediately covered our faces with our hands. The sight of him was horrifying. So full of blood. So

At that moment the club hit me... and I could feel blood pouring down my chin You are my neighbours. You can’t be about to kill us.” I looked at the terrifying weapons they were carrying. There were machetes, knives, spears, clubs, spades and sticks studded with nails. They were all already drenched in blood.

t was the machetes and the knives I most feared. I had seen people killed with clubs – they hit them once or twice on the back of the head, the brains came out, and it was all over. I knew one of the men carrying a club; he was a young man called John. I heard my mother say: “Death is death. I will not choose.” I said: “I choose John. Please don’t kill me with anything else.” All the young children were crying, but the rest of us were silent. That moment was beyond any emotion. We were all told to lie face-down on the bottom of the trench. It was not wide enough to lie across it, so we all had to lie lengthwise, our bodies overlapping each other in the confined space. much evil in his eyes. So much hatred. “So they are not here, are they? You say you didn’t see all these snakes cowering in here?” “No, I didn’t see them. It’s too dark in here to see.” The young man tried to sound convincing. “Well, if you want to make up for your little mistake, you’d better kill at least ten of them.” “I will, I will,” the young man stuttered. “But I tell you I didn’t see them.” “Outside!” he ordered us. My grandfather got up and we all followed, keeping as close to him as we could. Now we had to face our killers. My grandfather had his Bible in his hands. He fell to his knees and began to implore the men for mercy. “Why are you killing us? We have lived side by side with you as your brothers and sisters. “What have we done? I taught you as I taught my own children. Jesus Christ told us that we should love one another. Why are you condemning yourselves by having our blood on your hands? Why don’t you just forgive us?” On and on he went, begging them, pleading with them. Finally Gakuba said: “Stop wasting our time, old man. We’ve got too much work to do today.” Then turning to one of his men, he said: “Check the toilet and see how much room there is in there.” The man came back saying that it was already full. Again my grandfather cried out: “Why can’t you forgive us?” “We will spare you and your wife, because you are old,” Gakuba relented. “But all the rest of these snakes will have to die. But be quick and make up your mind. You are wasting our time.” “If you kill my children and my grandchildren, what is the point of me living?’ my grandfather said. “What

The little four-year-old was on her back. “Why are you raping me in front of my children?” she screamed. “Kill them first so that at least they do not have to witness that, and then you can do whatever

you like to me.” She did not want us to suffer any more than we were already suffering. “If that’s the way you want it,” said Gakuba. At that moment one of the killers came back and told them that they had found a place to dump our bodies. They took us a short distance from the house where, on the edge of my grandparents’ banana plantation, there was a long, thin trench about a meter deep, in which rain water had begun to collect. We were ordered into the pit and then Gakuba shouted: “Now choose which weapon you want to kill you! And hurry up. We have got so much to do today.” As I looked up at the twenty or more killers crowding around the edge of the trench, in my head I was screaming out: “This can’t be happening! I know you.

As I looked across at my mother I saw a machete coming down onto her neck and her head falling to the side. Then I saw them cut off her leg. She made no sound. I heard my brothers cry out, “Please forgive me, please forgive me” and then screaming with searing pain. I put my hands over my face. At that moment the club hit me. My tongue came out of my mouth and I could feel blood pouring down my chin. Then I was plunged into unconsciousness.

WORKING TOGeTheR TO BRING you The GOOd NeWS THROUGHOUT 2008, a campaign by Christians will be spreading hope through community projects and social action schemes. From cleaning up a longneglected park, to organising community events, to spreading the Gospel via a wide selection of media, Hope08 will involve Christians demonstrating the love of God in the UK. Churches will be joining together in a way that hasn’t been done before. Anglicans, Methodists, Pentecostals, Baptists and others will put aside their differences to work together for the greater good of the country. And the ‘hope’ is that people who are not yet believers will gain a deeper understanding of the love that was preached by Jesus – and experience that love for themselves.

tune in In 2008, New Life will be working with Christian media organisation United Christian Broadcasters (UCB) to spread the Word. UCB broadcast to virtually all major UK cities on dAB digital radio and you can also listen via digital satellite and online. UCB radio is perfect for anyone who has an interest in news, features, music and interviews from a faith perspective.

explore ChriStiAnity We’re also working with Alpha, the course that allows people to explore the Christian faith in a relaxed setting over ten thought-provoking weekly sessions. The courses are free and are usually run in the evening, and include a meal or refreshments. To find a course near you, see www.alpha.org

Find A ChurCh We’re also working with Find a Church, who run a brilliant website listing the details of more than 42,000 UK Christian churches. Simply tap in your postcode for help to find a great church in your area.

the BiBle mAtterS The Gideons are well known for their work distributing Bibles to schools, hospitals, hotels etc. If you want Jesus to make himself real in your life, and don’t have a Bible, The Gideons will be happy to provide you with a Testament completely free of charge.

The ABC of how you can become a Christian...

A that Jesus died so that you can be forgiven, and ask God to forgive you B Believe Admit that you have done wrong

The Bible says, ‘All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God’ (Romans 3:23).

‘God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life’ (John 3:16); ‘If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us’ (1 John 1:9).

bank’s aim TO GiVE away £1m A BANK has handed out £87,000 of its profits to charities and churches – and has long-term plans to give away £1million. Kingdom Bank revealed the generous gifts after reporting operating profits of £222,000 last year. The bank, which specialises in savings, church and charity mortgages and insurance, saw 35 per cent growth last year, and plans greater growth this year. Deputy Ch ief E xecutive Ch ris Sheldon said the bank was delighted to be able to increase the amount of gifts to charities and churches, many of which are chosen by its employees. He said: “Since we launched as a bank in 2005 it has always been our aim to allow churches and charities to share a gift from our profits. Although the board chooses where the main gifts go, we like to ensure each of our employees gets the chance to support one of their causes. “Our aspirations are for the total to reach £1million in a year.”

A JOURNEY of a special kind begins for one couple this month. Husband and wife Colin and Madeline Windsor will do a 40-stop tour from The Isle Of Lewis to Penzance, sharing stories of God along the way. At each stop they will con nect w ith Ch r ist ia ns and together they will spend some time in the city centre talking to people and offering to pray with people. Colin said: “We just want to encourage Christians and non-Ch ristians alike. We want to let people know that God loves people.’

PORn magazine boss Richard Tipler has told how he quit the seedy business after a night stranded in a Kenyan airport changed his life.

The ex-copper, who committed serious fraud, turned to adult entertainment after quitting the Metropolitan Police. After leaving his job with the Met, Richard walked out on his wife and son and was living in a derelict house. He found his way into the “girlie” magazines business. At one stage he had bank accounts in five different names, but says he was seen as a “loveable rogue” in his local village. But Richard felt a massive impact on his life after getting stuck in Kenya on his way to Malawi. He said: “The clerk at Nairobi Airport told me my ticket was not valid. He told me I’d have to remain in Kenya. I didn’t know anyone and

CHANGED MAN... Richard Tipler had never been abroad before. “After a very disturbed night reassessing and trying to reassure myself, I saw a face in a large crowd. I asked her for help. She immediately ordered: ‘Come with me’.” Later that night, Richard found himself with 16 American missionaries reading the Bible. He remained in Africa for four weeks, clearly impacted by his encounter with the missionaries. But it was only on his return to

Britain that he finally found faith. An old friend, who happened to be an Anglican vicar, soon met him, and Richard made the decision to become a Christian. And despite vowing to never marry again, he tied the k not three years ago after meeting a girl named Tracey at the church he was attending in Sheffield. They then moved from the South Yorkshire city to Bude in Cornwall, where they chose their new church and work together for the church. Richard said: “Tracey has talents and gifts that I do not have and vice-versa. We began to realise that Jesus was the focus of our relationship, that without him there was no relationship. “Our wedding was an amazing time of joyous reconciliation. My son Paul, now aged 34, was best man, my brother Michael acted as witness. Family relationships that had been lost 40 years earlier were restored.”

WATCHING as your family is murdered must be one of the most horrific things anyone can ever witness. To see it done in such a brutal way as Frida Gashumba had to endure would, you’d expect, leave you losing all faith in humankind. No one can even imagine how you could recover from such terrifying circumstances. Most of us would never be able to rebuild our lives if we had to suffer such torture. So knowing that Frida is now living a new life here in Britain and is happily married is astounding. We’re sure there must be times when Frida can’t help but relive those moments. You might even expect her to feel guilty about surviving. However, Frida has found Jesus Christ and through him she has found freedom from the guilt that troubles us all. For anyone who hasn’t been touched by such faith, it is hard to reconcile such a thought. You may think she’s barmy even considering forgiveness. But freedom from guilt is available to us all through faith in Christ. What it leads to is the ability to put behind us whatever hell we’ve lived through; and even help us to us forgive others. Harbouring anger can only lead to more heartache than God wants us to go through.

Showing true grace PAULINE Jacobi is a remarkably courageous 93-year-old. We wouldn’t say it was particularly wise to confront someone who is threatening to shoot you, but Ms Jacobi obviously recognised that her robber had a need greater than money. And she knew that anyone can receive the grace of God. So she ‘unloaded both barrels’ and told him about her faith. Good for her! FLIGHT LIEUTENANT HOPING TO LAND TOP RESULTS

SUPER FLY GUY IS BACK ON TRACK... BEING an RAF officer would be enough of an adrenalin-rush for anyone – but not action man John Clayton.

Because he’s getting back in the driving seat to take part in the Kit Car Championship, being run by the 750 Motor Club, which will see him race at tracks such as Silverstone and Snetterton. And if that’s not enough, he’s also getting his modified Land Rover ready for extreme off-road expeditions later this year. John’s passion for motorsport and adventure is eclipsed, however, when it comes to his faith. And he will be using his love of speed to continue his mission to reach out and tell people about Christianity. During his four years as chairman John steered the Christians in Motorsport group to wider recognition. The Flight Lieutenant explained that the group was set up to get like-minded people together and started out in the paddocks at Formula 1 races. John said: “A number of guys were into cars and wanted to contribute to the church but not in the normal means. They weren’t musical or interested in youth work but still wanted to do their bit. “We started in 2000 and it was originally to do F1 ministry, but it was unsustainable so we decided to look at outreach and pit lane Bible studies at grassroots events.” The result has been that Christians in Motorsport members attend a range of different events – the most recent being the drifting scene, where the aim is to get the car sideways for as long as possible. John will be using his Caterham 7-style kit car during the season to promote Alpha courses and when he’s not racing, uses the machine at church outreach events. He explained: “What we do is take cars and link them to church work. I took mine to a family fun day, which gave something for the guys to do. Many church-related days don’t attract men because they don’t realise you can enjoy sport and be a Christian.” As well as taking part in the Kit Car Championship, adventurer John will be taking part in off-road

John Clayton (below) in his Caterham 7-style kit car expeditions in his modified Land Rover. He added: “I use it in events as I’m a member of the All-Wheel Drive Club, but I also use it for outreach. I would usually offer church people the chance to bring non-Christian friends to back-country off-road driving days. Some of the precipitous drops they will go up and down are enough to make anyone feel close to God! “It’s bringing the faith to people in an exciting setting, because it is exciting being Christian.”  To find out more and follow John’s season, log on to www.claytonmotorsport.co.uk

Racing Reverend starts his season in style

Rev Simon Bulter

RACING Reverend, Simon Butler, took part in his first competitive car race for many years at the wheel of his Vector Formula Ford. The first of four PowerNights race events was held at a glorious and sunny Silverstone and the Rev Butler, racing in the Formula Ford series, drove well to bring his car home sixth and fifth in the double header event. “This event was the first competitive outing for both the car and myself in about five years,” explained Simon, “so we were really pleased to be running close to the quicker cars from the word go.” Simon & GWRacing ended the day just over a second a lap slower than the fastest lap of the day. The Kingdom Bank-backed car was rebuilt by Gerald Webb Racing prior to the event and proved to be extremely reliable, suffering only one or two small

Viewers are KO’d after champion speaks out BOXING’S new WBC light-welterweight champion proclaimed his faith in front of m illions of T V viewers minutes after picking up his belt. American Timothy Bradley, who won on a controversial split decision at Nottingham Arena last month, told awaiting television reporters: “All the glory to God, I couldn’t have done it without him. I came out with all my faith and trained hard to get to this point. I just want to thank God for being by my side.” Bradley (below), 27, who surprised many pundits by snatching the title from Brad ford c h a m p J u n ior Witter, doesn’t shy away from h is beliefs. He has told how God helped him fight h is way out of a ghetto neighbourhood. He said: “I’m a true believer in Jesus Christ and I feel that my life has changed because he has put boxing in front of me. “I feel that boxing changed my life because when I look back on my childhood days I was heading towards the wrong path. I had good parenting and I was taught well but I was in the wrong neighbourhood and I was around a lot of gangs and things like that. “I was really attracted to that glamour but God led me to boxing and changed all of that. For five to six days a week I would get out of school and head straight to the gym. “Boxing just kept me busy and active and I just loved it. It completely changed my whole life because it disciplined me and challenged me as a person.”

problems during the course of the event. Rev Butler said: “Preparation is obviously key. There’s an old saying in motorsport, that to finish first, first you have to finish, and that all comes down to preparation.” The event proved a double success for Simon as he also finalised a sponsorship deal with a newly launched Christian Men’s lifestyle magazine called MMQ. Colin Tomlin, editor of MMQ, attended the race and was delighted to have made the link with Nottingham’s Racing Rev: “We’re here today to cheer Simon on,” said Colin, “and we hope that by supporting his racing activities we will be able to increase awareness of MMQ magazine.” Simon’s next race is also at Silverstone on June 19 in the PowerNights series.

Girls kick tournament into touch! I know who I Kan thank... A GIRLS’ football team from a Western Isles school missed out playing in a national tournament because it was staged on a Sunday. The squad from the village of Back qualified for the Coca Cola Sevens finals at Heart of Midlothian’s stadium last month. But a number of parents withdrew their children, citing their Christian beliefs. Their MSP, Alasdair Allan, has raised

the matter in the Scottish Parliament after asking organisers to be flexible. In a motion to the parliament, Mr Allan said previous competitions had not been staged on a Sunday. He said sports should be open to all, regardless of race or religion. The Nationalist MSP, wrote to the organisers, called on them to “to avert a situation in which a team in the final would be disqualified simply because of the religious traditions”.

I have felt nothing like this.” Kanu’s goal against

OLYMPIC HOPEFUL KNOWS SHE CAN PRAY FOR... Oh brother! How

SOME DIVE-INE INTERVENTION! MAKING A SPLASH... Kirsty Balfour in action

OLYMPIC swimmer Kirsty Balfour will be hoping to walk on water as she takes part in the international games this August. And the 24-year-old from Scotland shouldn’t fear – she has God on her side. The star says she prays before each race, asking God for his favour and protection. After a recent trial performance, she mentally recited Matthew 22:37: “You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind.” “I do pray before races,” Kirsty said. “I just commit the race over to God and thank him for the opportunity of representing him and my country, and for knowing that the result is not the be-all and end-all. “At the end of the day I just have that sort of peace, knowing God is in charge of my future and he’s watching over me. It brings a lot of comfort and it helps with the nerves. “I suppose a lot of athletes are defined by their results, but I find that, being a Christian, my results are just a part of what I do; they don’t make me who I am. Just being able to realise that, and being able to look at things from a different

striker put boot into former life

FOOTBALLER and committed Christian Bruce Dyer says the transformation in his brother’s life forced him to turn to God. The former Crystal Palace, Watford and Barnsley star was enjoying a life of fame and fortune when his brother was sent to prison and converted to Christianity. Bruce, a former England under-21 international, said: “I’d dreamed about a lot of things and had achieved them but just wasn’t happy. I had a house, car and money in the bank and thought that would make me happy.” After speaking to his brother, who became a born-again Christian in jail, Bruce saw a dramatic transformation. He explained: “When he came out the transformation was unbelievable. I was talking to my brother and saw that Jesus was real. “I wasn’t in a church or anything, but I just sat in my bed and repented of my sin and said sorry to the Lord. I asked him to help me to live the right way. It was weird and strange. “I tried to battle issues with women and p a r t y i n g fo r y e a r s but could never overcome them in my own strength. As soon as I asked the Lord Jesus Christ into my life everything changed. “The Bible says anyone who is in Christ is a new creation. I remember going into the CHANGED... Bruce Dyer changing room at Crystal Palace and saying to the lads that I’d become a born-again Christian. They looked at me like I’d gone crazy.” A couple of months later, Bruce got a move to Barnsley, and was able to turn his back on his wild London lifestyle and settle in the more peaceful Yorkshire region. He soon became the club’s most popular striker, and off the field, became an evangelist in the dressing room. He was known at Barnsley for lifting his hands to God after scoring, and for gathering the team in a pre-match prayer huddle before every game. The devout Christian says he prays to God about “everything”, so sees no reason why God wouldn’t help him out on the football field. “The Bible says in all your ways acknowledge God. I ask him for strength, for health and for my family, I literally pray about everything. True success in life is being a Christian and fulfilling God’s plan, not about winning a football match. “True success for me is letting my light shine before all men and being a disciple of God. I want my success to glorify to God.”

angle and not get caught up in being absolutely distraught if things don’t go well... it does really help.” And Kirsty has high hopes for the British team at the Olympics. “All of our hard work is coming through. We’re gradually catching up the Australians and the Americans, who have ruled the world of swimming for so long. I think we’re a lot more confident now than we were at the Olympics four years ago.”
