A Message from ROB SWIERS

A SEASON OF Possibility…

A lot changes this time of year. We’re moving into a new season. Days are getting longer, and new life is springing up around us. It’s a reminder that even in darkness, beauty and hope are just around the corner.

The Easter season is also a reminder of Christ’s sacrifice...and the hope for new life and renewal.

Renewal is happening inside New Life Center as well – in the lives of the neighbors who come to us in their darkest hour. Each person who walks through our doors is a story of resilience and possibility, like John, whose story you can read on page 3.

Through the support of friends like you, these neighbors can rise above their circumstances and rebuild their lives. Because our recovery program is more than meals, safe shelter and care. It’s about finding faith that a new life is possible.

Thank you for empowering our guests along their journey from darkness to light...from despair to hope. Your generosity gives them the tools they need to move from the shadows of homelessness or addiction, into the light of stability and hope.

We’re deeply grateful to all those who have established a legacy gift or named the Mission in their will. Your enduring generosity is a true blessing – providing a lifeline for men facing homelessness and hunger in the Fargo-Moorhead area. You’re making a lasting difference by helping share God’s truth and the hope of Jesus with all who come through our doors.

If you’ve been considering a planned or deferred gift to continue your legacy of compassion and care, please contact Executive Director Rob Swiers at (701) 532-4441 or rob.swiers@fargonlc.org.

Much of John’s childhood was spent on a reservation with his Native American family. Both his parents struggled with addiction. His father worked from the road, so he was seldom home. “My dad taught me I’d have to work hard.” So, when John’s mom left when he was just 16, he took his father’s words to heart. “I had to learn to depend on myself.”

In adulthood, John devoted himself to the care of others. He raised three boys on his own after their mother passed away. When his sons left home, an emptiness set in… and he began to numb his feelings with alcohol.

Twice, John severely injured his back from drinking-related falls. “The doctor warned, ‘If you fall again, you won’t walk again.’”

John entered rehab and found sobriety – but tragedy soon struck again. To deal with his chronic

pain while helping a friend move, John took a pain pill...not knowing it was laced with fentanyl. “I overdosed and ended up in a coma,” he shares.

When he awoke, he had nowhere to go. “I didn’t want to live with people who were drinking and using…I needed a safe place.” Thankfully, the hospital led him to New Life Center.

Through our Medical Respite Program, John was able to heal physically and rebuild his confidence. “At first, I was really down,” John remembers. “I’d lost everything.” But the staff worked to make him feel safe and at home. “One of the nurses checked on me every day. In fact, the whole staff helped pull me out of my sadness,” he remembers.

These days, John is regaining his footing. “The Mission gave me the opportunity to contribute by working here,” he says. “That, along with recovery meetings, Bible study and weekly church services have all helped me learn to slow down and be grateful.”

This Easter, John has a new direction for his life. Thank you for lighting the path forward for him to experience a future of hope and peace! “I see a fantastic future ahead, and I’ll always be thankful to the Mission for lifting me up.”

May we shine the light of Christ.

“In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” — John 1:4–5
