New Hope's Mission To Reach people for Chr ist, Root people in Chr ist, and Rel ease people to ser ve Chr ist.

I?ve been noticing an ever gr ow ing phenom enon, one that I?ve added to my list of pet peeves. Per haps I?m sim ply paying m or e attention. Still, I am obser ving a lot of distr acted dr iver s on the r oad. M ost ar e either talking on their cell phone or texting. The r esult is that som e ar e unable to dr ive at the posted speed lim it (w hich r eally ir ks m e) w hile other s ar e unable to stay in their lane of tr affic. In any event, m any of these dr iver s ar e br eaking the law and ar e also m enaces to society. Suffice it to say, I have little patience for this kind of behavior.

It also occur s to m e that ther e is so m uch distr action in m any chur ches today.

Inor dinate attention is given to concer ns that ar e not unim por tant, but in my estim ation they ar e not the m ost im por tant w or k of the chur ch. We?ve lived w ith our cur r ent m ission statem ent for near ly ten year s. Occasionally, I w onder if w e ought to r evise it or w r ite an entir ely new m ission statem ent.

Yet, each tim e I r ead it I am of the opinion that this states w ell w hat God is calling us to do. The m ission of New Hope Chur ch is to Reach people for Chr ist, Root people in Chr ist and Rel ease people to ser ve Chr ist. In other w or ds, it is our aim to br ing people to a r elationship w ith Chr ist by w hatever m eans w e?r e able, gr ow them in the life of discipleship (follow ing Jesus) thr ough Bible study, spir itual gr ow th and education oppor tunities, and then deploy them into m inistr y thr ough myr iad oppor tunities to im pact our com m unity for Chr ist.

Ear lier this w eek, a fr iend in chur ch sent m e this quote fr om his daily devotional ("The Gospel Accor ding to Paul" by John M acAr thur on bible.com ): The cross of Jesus Christ is the sum and the focus of the gospel according to Paul: ?We preach Christ crucified. God forbid that I should boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ.? And in Pauline theology, the cross is a symbol of atonement. ?Christ crucified? is a message about redemption for sinners.

How vital is that truth, and how crucial for the messenger to stay on point? To make the gospel about anything else is to depart from biblical Christianity. Paul?s teaching is not the least bit ambiguous about this. It?s the very definition of what he meant when he spoke of ?my gospel.? Quite simply, the gospel is good news for fallen humanity regarding how sins are atoned for, how sinners are forgiven, and how believers are made right with God. And the mission of the church is not to win the world?s admiration.

M any of today?s best-known evangelical strategists and the leading practitioners of ?missional? methodology seem not to grasp that simple point. They constantly encourage young evangelicals to ?engage the culture? and defer to the rules of political correctness. When they translate that counsel into concrete, practical plans of action, it often turns out to mean little more than trying to stay in step with fashion ? as if being perceived as cool were the key to effective ministry.

You won?t find anything like that in Paul?s exhortations to young ministers. On the contrary, Paul candidly acknowledges that the gospel is ?a stumbling block to Jews and folly to Gentiles.?

As w e continue to ?pr ess the m ar k? at New Hope, I pr ay that our distr actions w ill be m inim al, w ill not diver t us and that w e w ill ever keep ?the m ain thing the m ain thing.?

As we continue our search for a new church administrator, in this space this month we are sharing a blog post by Rev. Billy Nor den, son of Rev Steve and Jean Norden, and co-pastor of The Community, an RCA M inistry in Ada, M I.

The chur ch in Nor th Am er ica has a biblical cr isis, and it likely isn?t w hat you think it is.

The cultur e of m oney, gener osity, and stew ar dship is one of the m ost thor oughly addr essed in scr iptur e, and yet it is ar guably the ar ea of faithful living w her e w e ar e m ost out of alignm ent. We don?t talk about m oney openly, our budgeting and fundr aising pr actices ar e often ir r esponsible, and m ost of all w e com plain about not having the funds to suppor t the w or k that w e believe God is calling us to do.

A m em ber of my chur ch, after a conver sation about our ?Cur r ent Reality,? com m ented that ?w hile it m ight be tr ue that w e have lived paycheck to paycheck for m ost of our centur y-long histor y, w e alw ays m ake it, don?t w e?

W hat?s so bad about that??

I w ish I had a thoughtful r esponse in the m om ent, but it w asn?t until having tim e to think about his question that things becam e m or e clear. We?ve lived paycheck to paycheck, but it has w or n staff dow n as they w or r y about w hether or not w e?ll m ake payr oll. We?ve lived paycheck to paycheck, but w e haven?t been open to the idea of hir ing a Childr en?s m inister for our r apidly gr ow ing population of kids ? because ther e?s not enough m oney to consider it. We?ve lived paycheck to paycheck, but m uch of our stew ar dship focus has been about m eeting the bar e-bones budget for our faith com m unity, w ithout m uch thought to investing beyond our w alls. The connection is sim ple ? poor financial health is a dir ect cause of poor m issional engagem ent. (continued on next page)

You see, you can?t talk about m ission w ithout talking about m oney ? including best pr actices, r eal num ber s, and open and honest conver sations w ithin the faith com m unity about gener osity.

Her e?s a m om ent w her e w e stopped living paycheck to paycheck: A faithful m em ber passed aw ay, leaving the chur ch 10% of his estate. An unr estr icted gift. It w asn?t huge by any m eans, but it gave us som ething w e didn?t have for som e tim e ? a thr ee-m onth em er gency financial cushion in the bank account ? a goal w e had for som e tim e but w er en?t able to m eet. Shor tly after , w e em bar ked on one of the r iskier m issional endeavor s w e had done in quite a w hile. We hosted the fir st annual Ada Chili and Beer Festival, an oppor tunity to gather our com m unity together , w hile foster ing deeper r elationships and m eaningful com m unity. It w as a blessing for the com m unity, a shot of m issional adr enaline for our congr egation, and it never w ould have happened if w e didn?t have som e br eathing r oom in our bank account.

How ever w e under stand our specific m ission, it is fueled by our gifts ? tim e, talent, and not the least of these ? tr easur e. And the ir ony is that the m ajor ity of chur ches ar e notor ious for ignor ing best pr actices in financial health, and then use financial infir m ity as an excuse for not living r adically into their sense of m ission.

Does this quote by author and philanthr opist Ker r y Alys Robinson r esonate w ith you? ?There is often an insistence on raising money first and then advancing the mission of the organization. While a case can be made for why this approach is fiscally responsible, it all too often is used as an excuse for inertia, maintenance, avoiding innovation, stagnant thinking and continued mediocrity.?

This descr ibes m ost of the chur ches I?ve w or ked w ith w ho ar e in financial str ain. But Robinson goes on to w r ite this: ?The most successful, dynamic, well-funded nonprofits always begin by living out of mission, so that rather than just talk about their mission, they can show donors how they are acting on that mission.?

The objective data fr om successful chur ches and nonpr ofits show ver y clear ly that m oney follow s m ission.

It is im possible to separ ate the m ission conver sation fr om the m oney conver sation. The tw o ar e inter tw ined. If a faith com m unity isn?t clear about and com pelled by its m ission, it w ill fail to find funds to suppor t it. And if the chur ch fails to have open, honest, and faithful conver sation about m oney, the m ission w ill fail as a r esult.

We also know this about m ission ? passionate and faithful follow ing of Jesus com es fr om som ething deep w ithin your hear t that changes. Conver sion is one w or d for it. It?s w hen our pur pose and w ay of being becom e ver y differ ent fr om w hat it once w as. Foster ing a place w her e people can lear n to be gener ous, a place w her e they can see how gener osity begets m or e gener osity, that is the type of conver sion that can save the w or ld. That?s an envir onm ent w her e m ission w ill r eally thr ive.

A bachelor ?s degr ee and r elated exper ience is needed as w ell as str ong team leader ship, inter per sonal, com m unication, or ganizational, and com puter skills. Qualified individuals m ust know Chr ist as their per sonal savior and be able to enthusiastically suppor t the m inistr y and m ission of the chur ch.

Fi n an ci al Adm i n i st r at or - New Hope is looking to staff our par t-tim e (15-20 hour s a w eek) financial adm inistr ator position. This position r epor ts to the chur ch adm inistr ator and suppor ts the adm inistr ative financial functions of the chur ch including accounting, budgeting, payr oll, contr ibutions, and banking. A degr ee and/or equivalent gener al accounting/bookkeeping exper ience is r equir ed and know ledge of GAAP and fund accounting for non-pr ofit or ganizations is str ongly desir ed. The gr ant w ill help pr ovide oppor tunities for New Hope youth and fr iends of New Hope youth to connect w ith each other and becom e r ooted in Chr ist.

Kindw ay is based in Wester ville and does its m inistr y at the M ar ion Cor r ectional Institution w ith m en and the Ohio Refor m ator y for Wom en. Kindw ay has pr oven that their clients have a ver y low r ecidivism r ate and that lives have been changed and given to Chr ist as a r esult of the pr ogr am .

Gr ace Cl i n i c Del aw ar e, Oh i o: Gr ant funds w er e aw ar ded to suppor t fr ee dental ser vices to those in need. Gr ace Clinic not only offer s m edical and dental ser vices, they offer pr ayer as a r egular par t of their suppor t. They ar e a Chr istian m inistr y looking to heal the w hole per son, not only their physical needs but their spir itual ones as w ell.

Seven Bask et s Com m u n i t y Devel opm en t Cor por at i on ?s Su m m er Day Cam p Pr ogr am : Gr ant funds w er e aw ar ded to suppor t a Chr istian-based sum m er pr ogr am for childr en in the ur ban Thunder bir d Acr es ar ea of Colum bus (Ham ilton Road and Livingston Avenue). These funds w ill help pr ovide par ticipants w ith daily br eakfast and lunch, Chr istian ver ses and them es, academ ic suppor t, and r egular activities. Childr en also ar e given food to take hom e for the w eekend.

You n g Li f e Caper n au m : Gr ant funds w er e aw ar ded to offer childr en w ith special needs the oppor tunity to attend Chr istian sum m er cam ps. These childr en w ill have m any oppor tunities to exper ience the love of Chr ist all w hile having fun doing m ultiple activities. Young Life Caper naum is based in Colum bus and is a pr ogr am for childr en in the Colum bus ar ea.
