At this point in my life I have begun to r ealize that God places cer tain individuals in a per son?s path w ho alter the cour se of their life histor y. Thir ty tw o year s ago this sum m er , I w as r eading the ?Dublin New s? - a publication of the then Subur ban New s Publications. One par ticular ar ticle caught my eye; it w as a pr eview of the upcom ing Dublin Sham r ocks football season. Having just m oved to Dublin and being a r abid spor ts fan, I r ead the ar ticle in its entir ety. A par agr aph of the ar ticle m entioned that Dublin football w as in need of volunteer s to sell tickets and pr ogr am s at gam es. Another need w as a stadium public addr ess announcer. Shor tly after r eading the ar ticle, I w r ote a letter to the Head Football Coach and Athletic Dir ector (the sam e per son) explaining that I had just m oved to the ar ea to star t a chur ch. Because I knew that I w ould be ?taking fr om ? the com m unity, I believed it w as my r esponsibility to ?give back .? I indicated that I w ould gladly volunteer to sell tickets, pr ogr am s or w hatever the need m ay be. I also m entioned that I had som e exper ience as a public addr ess announcer w hen I w as in college. A w eek later , I r eceived a phone call fr om the Head Football Coach/Athletic Dir ector letting m e know that he w ould like m e to ser ve as stadium announcer. I asked if w e could m eet because I w anted to be absolutely cer tain w hat his expectations w er e. W hen w e m et, he also asked if I w ould be inter ested in ser ving as team chaplain, offer ing a pr ayer at w eekly pr e-gam e m eals. As they say, the r est is histor y.

Todd Al l es is the per son w ho opened the door for my involvem ent in Dublin City Schools dur ing the past thr ee decades as fir st Voice of the Rocks and now Voice of the Ir ish, ser ving on a var iety of task for ces and co-chair ing sever al bond and levy cam paigns. Today, Todd is an Elder at New Hope Chur ch. And, as of June 1, Todd is New Hope?s Chur ch Adm inistr ator. Todd com es w ith an extensive and im pr essive r esum e. He has ser ved as pr incipal of thr ee high schools. He has been head coach or assistant coach for a num ber of football pr ogr am s. M or e r ecently, Todd w as Dir ector of Football Oper ations at the Univer sity of Alabam a and then in the sam e position at The Ohio State Univer sity, over seeing m ulti-m illion dollar budgets. To say that Todd br ings ?the full package? to New Hope w ould be an under statem ent. Beyond his im pr essive r esum e, Todd is a m an of deep, passionate faith. Quite sim ply, Todd w ill m ake New Hope and our staff better. I know that you join m e in w elcom ing Todd to this new leader ship r ole. Now , to a m or e painful topic. As I?ve w r itten befor e, the past 18 m onths have been hear tbr eaking for m e per sonally and for m any at New Hope as w e have had to say ?godspeed? to a num ber of m em ber s w ho have died. In a congr egation as lar ge as our s, new s does not alw ays tr avel quickly. Still, in the w or ld of social m edia m any expect to be infor m ed of these life events im m ediately. Our staff has been asked by m any w hy w e do not post new s of a m em ber ?s death on social m edia. We?ve discussed this and I w ant to offer our collective w isdom and r esponse. Fir st, it is not our pr er ogative to m ake these posts on social m edia. It is the fam ily?s and only the fam ily?s pr er ogative to do so. One of our sons lear ned of his gr andpar ent?s death on social m edia and, needless to say, Jean and I w er e ver y disappointed. Second, if the funer al or m em or ial ser vice w ill be held befor e the Sunday im m ediately follow ing the death, in m ost instances w e w ill send an em ail to the entir e congr egation. It sim ply is im pr actical to call ever y household at New Hope. If the funer al or m em or ial ser vice w ill be held after that Sunday, all the per tinent infor m ation w ill be ar ticulated dur ing the announcem ents and/or pr ayer r equests as w ell as in the Sunday Infor m er and This Week at New Hope em ail. IN ALL INSTANCES W E W ILL RESPECT THE FAM ILY?S PRIVACY. If ther e is no congr egational em ail, under stand that w e ar e r especting the fam ily?s r equest. Finally, by the tim e you r ead this new sletter you w ill have r eceived an em ail to the congr egation outlining ver y ser ious steps w e ar e taking to m anage our financial situation at New Hope. We ar e sever ely behind in our year -to-date budgeted r evenue, so m uch so that w e ar e taking m easur es that ar e unpr ecedented in the histor y of New Hope. I tr ust that all of you ar e now enjoying the slow er pace of sum m er and that you ar e being r efr eshed. In ever y leader ship position I have had I felt it necessar y to m ake sur e that ever yone under stands w hat my goals and vision ar e using a pledge I have found to be ver y sim ple, yet infor m ative. I have asked people to use it as a guide to keep m e focused on the m ission and vision of the or ganization. I am asking each of you to do the sam e. I call it accountability, som ething in shor t supply these days. As Chur ch Adm inistr ator of New Hope Chur ch, I pledge to use all of my ener gy and ever y r esour ce available in constant pur suit of excellence. Although at fir st glance it appear s M ay w as an exceptional m onth for New Hope financially, this is lar gely due to a gener ous gift fr om New Hope Pr eschool r epr esenting their annual tithe to the chur ch. We ar e gr ateful for the Pr eschool's com m itm ent to stew ar dship, and w hile this one-tim e gift has im pr oved the chur ch's financial pictur e, our over all giving is still far below budget and on a m onthly basis our expenses continue to exceed our giving. It doesn't take a financial w izar d to see that this is unsustainable. Although w e as a chur ch have m onitor ed our spending ver y car efully all year , w e ar e now at the point w her e any expense not r equir ed for the chur ch to function m ust be put on hold. Dur ing the fir st w eek of June w e had over 120 cam per s conver ge on New Hope and exper ience som e "Epic M om ents" at Spor ts Cam p! Each night focused on an athlete w hose stor ies of Discover y, Adver sity, Defeat, and Victor y helped show all the par ticipants that God has a plan for them . We played basketball, football, tr ack and field, and golf dur ing the w eek and concluded w ith our fam ous m edal cer em ony and tailgate par ty. Thanks to all the team m em ber s w ho m ade this w eek possible!
Kids age 4 and up ar e invited to join us for Cave Quest VBS! This VBS pr om ises to be an over -the-top, under gr ound adventur e! Your kids w ill get to be par t of a cr ew and m eet Sal the Salam ander , M aw tha the M oth, Radar the Bat, Olivia the Ow l, and Ray the Lightning Bug as w e use science, gam es, special snacks, videos, and bible stor ies to lear n about "Follow ing Jesus: the Light of the Wor ld."
