Our gr andsons spent tw o w eeks w ith us this sum m er , one w eek at a tim e. We had gr eat fun and I tr uly enjoyed our pr e-bedtim e r itual. Jean and I believed that it w as im por tant to r ead to our sons and w e?ve continued that pr actice w ith our gr andsons. One evening I decided to change things up. Instead of r eading stor ies fr om a book, I told our gr andsons ?tonight let m e tell you som e Japanese stor ies.? So, dr aw ing on m em or ies fr om my youth I told them stor ies that I lear ned w hile gr ow ing up in Japan. I do adm it taking a lar ge m easur e of ar tistic and poetic license as I em bellished these stor ies. W hat sur pr ised m e, though, w as how m uch our gr andsons enjoyed the stor ies w ith w hich I w as enter taining them . They enjoyed them so m uch that, as w e w er e dr iving to M ichigan to r endezvous w ith their m other , the boys kept saying ?Gr andpa, tell us another Japanese stor y.? I had to adm it that my m em or y and r eper toir e w er e exhausted quite quickly. I love stor ies because they ar e pow er ful in the tr uth that they com m unicate. A stor y does not have to be factually tr ue in or der for it to com m unicate im por tant tr uth. We know that, w hen Jesus w anted to com m unicate spir itual tr uth, he often told a stor y. It w as our Lor d?s w ay of anchor ing spir itual tr uth in life exper ience.
We call Jesus?stor ies par ables, fr om the Gr eek parabole w hich liter ally m eans to place som ething alongside another. Often Jesus w ould intr oduce his par ables w ith the phr ase ?God?s kingdom is as if. . .? One of the deep, m eaningful tr uths I?ve discover ed thr ough par ticipating in The Jour ney, a spir itual gr ow th pr ocess that w e offer at New Hope, is that God is w r iting our stor y. Our lives ar e not the r esult of fiat or a r andom ser ies of events. M or e im por tantly, God uses ever ything and all the events, good and bad, to give shape to our life stor y. Often, w hen w e ar e exper iencing adver sity, hear tache and disappointm ent, w e cr y out to God ?w her e ar e you?? It?s only in r etr ospect that w e discover and lear n that God w as especially pr esent in those tim es, even w hen w e w er e unaw ar e of his pr esence. The stor y that God is w r iting in your life is ultim ately a good stor y. That does not necessar ily m ean it?s a stor y w her e ever yone lives happily ever after but it is a good stor y never theless. Rom ans 8:28 is one of those ver ses on w hich w e can build a life: We know that all things work together for good for those who love God, who are called according to his purpose.

40 Days of Prayer - Areyou ready to pray? Rick War r en, the author of The Purpose Driven Life, extends a new challenge for Chr istians in his study 40 Days of Prayer: Pr ay. God cr eated us to pr ay, yet w e as adults often str uggle w ith pr ayer. You ar e invited to gr ow in your know ledge, ability, and r esour cefulness of pr ayer this Fall. The Childr en?s M inistr y has had an am azing sum m er shar ing Jesus w ith m any childr en and volunteer s! Spor ts Cam p opened the sum m er w ith a sm all but m ighty cr ew of our young disciples lear ning how to use their bodies to honor and ser ve God. VBS closed the sum m er w ith a giant cr ew of childr en w ho lear ned that God is good even w hen life is w ild. Both events w er e am azing! If you w er e blessed to ser ve w ith us, thank you. W hen w e choose, as par ents or guar dians, to br ing our childr en to chur ch, w e ar e investing in them as our siblings in Chr ist w ho w ill ser ve Jesus w ith us. It is our hope that the pr ogr am s w e offer her e at New Hope w ill be building blocks to the str ong faith foundation our childr en w ill need to face the w or ld successfully and joyfully w ith Jesus. That being said, all of the pr ogr am s w e have in New Hope?s Childr en?s M inistr y r equir e num er ous people, both adults and youth, to r un safely and effectively. VBS alone utilized over 100 (of the best ever ) volunteer s. That?s a ver y big num ber. Have you felt the joy of ser ving in the Childr en?s M inistr y lately? Have you seen a child?s eyes change w hen they under stand a new Bible stor y? W hen w as the last tim e you shar ed Jesus?stor y w ith a child? It?s one of the m ost r ew ar ding exper iences. Club 45 is a m ighty gr oup of ser vice based 4th and 5th gr ader s m aking a differ ence in their com m unities. We w ill m eet once a m onth to gather in devotions, ser vice, and fun. M y husband M ar k and I love to find a show w e can binge w atch together ever y now and then. We especially love w hen our fr iends have w atched, or ar e w atching the sam e show as us so w e can debr ief about each episode, the char acter s, and the stor y. Occasionally, w e find a show that w e not only w ant to discuss w ith other s, but w e love it so m uch w e w ant new fam ilies to w atch it and enjoy it as m uch as us! And w henever w e r ecom m end a show w e alw ays say, ?Give it 3 episodes. You have to m ake a 3 episode investm ent befor e m aking a decision about w hether you w ant to com m it to finishing a ser ies or not.? Thr ee episodes helps you to see m or e than the one episode that m ight not have been the best. Thr ee episodes gives you the oppor tunity to begin to under stand and get to know the char acter s. And thr ee episodes gives you the oppor tunity to begin to under stand the stor y of the show , and the dir ection it is going. Now w hy do I shar e this w ith you? Well, if you w er e at chur ch on August 18 you hear d m e invite anyone betw een gr ades 6-12 to join us for our Youth Gr oup and Sunday School Kick-Off on Septem ber 8. W hether you w er e on the fence about com ing, uncer tain if you w anted to par ticipate, or ner vous about not know ing m any people, w hat I w ant you to hear is w hat one of our leader s said, ?Ther e r eally is a place for ever yone her e.? And that m eans ther e is a place for you; but it w ill benefit you m ost if you give it m or e than one visit to youth gr oup to decide if this is w her e you w ant to be, and w her e you w ant to gr ow. So my encour agem ent is this: 1) Com e to Youth Gr oup a m inim um of 3 consecutive w eeks. In that tim e you w ill get to know other s, get to know your leader s, begin to under stand w hat our gr oup is all about, and w hy w e do the cr azy fun things w e do. The bonus is w e get to know YOU too! By floating in and out spor adically, deeper r elationships ar e m or e difficult to develop. A faithful and faith filled life is one deeply r ooted in com m unity. We invite you to be a par t of this aw esom e com m unity. Ther e is a place for you her e. 2) If you ar e ner vous about not know ing anyone, br ing a fr iend, or a few. All ar e w elcom e her e!
