On Sunday after noon, Septem ber 18, I sent an em ail to our chur ch m ailing list w ith an invitation to par ticipate in a sur vey. The sur vey w as pr om pted by Geor ge Bar na?s "State of the Chur ch 2016" r epor t in w hich he analyzed the over all health of the chur ch in Am er ica. For those of you w ho ar e unfam iliar w ith Geor ge Bar na, he is, in my opinion, the for em ost chur ch sociologist in the U.S.A. Bar na identified seven cr iter ia that indicate how Am er icans exper ience and expr ess their faith. Those cr iter ia w er e the basis of the sur vey that I conducted and I w as ver y encour aged by the r esponses w e r eceived. Befor e I tell you w hat the r esponses r evealed, let?s explor e the validity of the data. Fir st, please note that this w as an anonym ous sur vey, and those w ho r esponded w er e not per sonally identified. The sur vey link w as em ailed to 596 em ail addr esses. Sever al of the r ecipients ar e not m em ber s or r egular attendees of New Hope Chur ch so I asked them to r efr ain fr om answ er ing the sur vey. The em ail w as opened by 330 individuals, for a 55.4% open r ate that is quite exceptional. Of the 330 w ho r ead the em ail, 148 people clicked on the link to the sur vey that r epr esents 24.8% of potential r espondents. Of the 148 r espondents w ho clicked on the link to the sur vey, 110 individuals com pleted the sur vey. I think that?s ter r ific! So, w hat did the sur vey r eveal? Her e is the data on how the Am er ican populace exper ience and expr ess their faith:

Of those w ho r esponded to our sur vey, 100% of the r espondents indicated that they had pr ayed to God in the past w eek . 79% indicated that they had attended a chur ch ser vice other than a w edding or funer al in the past w eek . W ith r egar d to r eading the Bible in the past w eek, 62% r esponded affir m atively. 32% of our r espondents said that they had volunteer ed at a non-pr ofit w hile 50% indicated that they had volunteer ed at chur ch dur ing the past w eek! W hile adult Sunday School had just begun its new offer ings the day the sur vey w as shar ed, still 39% of r espondents indicated that they w er e ther e. Finally, 19% of those r esponding indicated that they had attended a sm all gr oup m eeting dur ing the past w eek . Clear ly, ther e is a spir itual vitality at New Hope for w hich w e should give gr eat thanks to God! I also w ant to thank you for the r esponses you offer ed about pr ogr am s and m inistr ies, outr each oppor tunities and Bible study topics or classes that you?d like to see offer ed at New Hope. Your r esponses have been shar ed w ith all pr ogr am staff and I?m confident that each w ill pay car eful attention to w hat has been ar ticulated. W hile I w on?t guar antee that ever y suggestion w ill be im plem ented, w e?ll consider them thoughtfully and plan our pr ogr am s and m inistr ies to offer the gr eatest oppor tunities for spir itual gr ow th that w e?r e able. Finally, I w ant to m ention a concer n that I have, one of w hich I?ve m ade m ention befor e. To be sur e, for our pr ogr am staff (pastor s, m usic staff, childr en?s and youth m inistr y) Sunday is a w or k day. We know that, w e expect that and w e anticipate that m em ber s and attendees of New Hope w ill appr oach us w ith their questions and concer ns. How ever , w hen our adm inistr ative staff ar e pr esent on Sunday m or ning, their sole pur pose is to w or ship. They, as m uch as you, ar e pr esent to be nur tur ed and encour aged in their faith. I kindly r equest that you r espect their desir e and need to w or ship. Unless it is an absolute em er gency of catastr ophic pr opor tions, I ask that you w ait w ith your concer ns and questions until M onday or days later. I continue to r em ain gr ateful and enthused at w hat God is doing am ong us. I will rescue and honor them." - Psalm 91:15 On Septem ber 24 and 25, New Hope Chur ch held its second M issional Engagem ent activity at Gr eenw ood Lake in Delaw ar e, Ohio. Last year 's exper ience w as one of the m ost w or thw hile activities that my w ife Kar en and I have par ticipated in, and it w as even m or e gr atifying this year. To stand back and see w hat w e accom plished in a shor t per iod of tim e, know ing that our tim e and talents w er e ser ving victim s of hum an tr afficking, gave us a sense of joy that is har d to descr ibe. New Hope is in the beginning stages of developing a new Str ategic Plan for 2017-2022. A cr itical par t of that planning pr ocess is to clar ify our M ission and identify a Vision for New Hope Chur ch over the next five year s. Dur ing this pr ocess w e w ill be for m ing Focus Gr oups to help identify goals in all the m ajor ar eas w ithin the chur ch. Be thinking of an ar ea you m ight w ant to actively par ticipate in as w e develop these goals together. As an initial step in this pr ocess, at a r ecent staff m eeting w e w or ked to answ er the question, "W hat do w e w ant to BE for the Gr eater Nor thw est Colum bus ar ea as a chur ch?" Pastor Steve shar ed that HIS VISION is for M issional Engagem ent to be an integr al par t of New Hope's DNA. Our w or k OUTSIDE the chur ch and FOR the com m unity is to be a focal point. 1 Peter 4:10 says, "Each of you should use w hatever gift you have r eceived to ser ve other s, as faithful stew ar ds of God's gr ace in its var ious for m s." Each of us m ust begin thinking of w ays that w e can individually, and collectively, be that cup of str ength to suffer ing souls. One other note of infor m ation. Tw ice a year the Elder s do their best to m ake per sonal contact w ith m em ber s of New Hope to ascer tain their pr ayer needs, answ er questions they m ight have, or just to "check in." So, don't be sur pr ised w hen the phone r ings and it is an Elder.

We have had a w onder ful star t to our school year at New Hope Pr esch ool . The m onth of Septem ber w as filled w ith excitem ent, as the childr en settled in to their daily r outines and had fun m eeting new fr iends. At the end of Septem ber the kids had a visit fr om our local fir e depar tm ent, w her e they lear ned about fir e safety and got to tour the fir e tr uck . That is alw ays a fun day for the childr en. October is going to be a busy m onth at the pr eschool. Our school w ill be all sm iles as w e kick off our m onth w ith pictur e day. Later in the m onth, our classr oom s w ill take our fir st field tr ip to Lehner ?s Far m w her e the kids w ill have a chance to pick that per fect pum pkin, and enjoy m any other fall activities. Finally, w e w ill end the m onth w ith the kids' favor ite? Hallow een! The kids w ill com e dr essed in their costum es and par ade ar ound school to tr ick or tr eat, and then back in the classr oom for a ghoulish good tim e. We?r e off to a gr eat school year !

Our Youth Sunday School classes ar e studying the Book of Rom ans. We ar e lear ning how to have a new life in Chr ist and how to live a life like Chr ist. We ar e lear ning w hat it is like to answ er God?s call. M ar tin Luther , Saint Augustine, and John Wesley all had their lives changed by the book of Rom ans. W hat w ill it do to us? M iddle and High School Youth Gr oups ar e lear ning how to ask tough questions about our faith. "Can I ask that?" is our them e as w e look at questions such as: Is it w r ong to doubt God? Is hell r eal? How could God send som eone ther e? Can I do som ething so bad that God w on?t for give m e? W hy do bad things happen to good people? W hy is it so aw kw ar d to talk about Jesus w ith my fr iends? We use these questions and m or e as a gr eat discussion into w hat the Bible has to say about these big questions.

Paul's aggr essive tone show s just how im por tant it w as to him that the people em br ace unity in Chr ist, no m atter their r acial, ethnic, or fam ily distinctions. Chr ist has set us all fr ee fr om the bonds of sin to live lives of liber ty in Chr ist. In this study w e w ill focus on Paul's w or ds in Galatians as they encour age us to pur sue a life of holiness and liber ty in Chr ist. This life is gained not by our ow n str ength but in the know ledge of God's em pow er ing gr ace in our lives.
