I lear ned to w alk on w ater. M om and Dad told m e that I took my fir st steps shor tly befor e my fir st bir thday on the deck of the fr eighter that w as tr anspor ting the thr ee of us to Japan. Per haps that?s w hy I?ve had a lifelong affinity w ith the ocean. Som e of my childhood m em or ies ar e of sw im m ing in the Pacific or of tim e spent ar ound Yokoham a Bay dur ing my adolescence. So, on the r ecent tr ip my w ife Jean and I took to Alaska, it cam e as no sur pr ise that as soon as our cr uise ship depar ted W hittier and enter ed the Gulf of Alaska in the Pacific Ocean, I felt as though I had r etur ned to my r oots. I love being at sea for any num ber of r easons. One is sim ply per spective. As long as I can see land, I labor under the illusion that I?m the m aster of my ow n destiny. But w hen ther e is nothing on the hor izon except the vast expanse of ocean, I r ealize just w hat a sm all par t of this fantastic cr eation I am ? not insignificant, but sm all nonetheless. On the seas I am ver y m uch aw ar e of the vastness of God?s cr eation and, m or e im por tantly, that God is God and I am not. I love the sea for the diver sity of w ildlife that inhabits it and the sur r ounding envir onm ent. Watching w hales, sea lions, sea gulls, eagles, haw ks, por poises, and any num ber of fish and fow l filled m e w ith a sense of appr eciation and m ar vel for God?s cr eative ability. I love the sea for its stillness and quiet. Other than the dr one of the ship?s engines or the occasional blow of a w hale or scr eech of a seagull, the sound of silence is per vasive. The psalm ist?s w or ds, ?Be still and know that I am God? becom e str ikingly r eal.

I find it inter esting that, for the Hebr ew s, the sea w as a place of confusion and chaos, som ething to be fear ed. The sea w as unpr edictable, stor my, som ething that r epr esented all that could go w r ong in life and the disastr ous consequences that w ould follow. That?s w hy in the m ar velous 21st chapter of John?s Revelation he w r ites, ?Then I saw a new heaven and a new ear th; for the fir st heaven and the fir st ear th had passed aw ay, and the sea w as no m or e.? John points us to the hope of that day w hen all things w ill be m ade new and all the chaos and confusion of life w ill no longer be pr esent. I look for w ar d to, no I year n for that new cr eation. Still, until that day I w ill love tim e at sea for all its r em inder s and r efr eshing r est.

As a chur ch New Hope has been gr eatly blessed, and I believe God blesses us to BE a blessing (Genesis 12:2). This is one r eason New Hope takes a tr ue scr iptur al appr oach to our giving by tithing 10% of our offer ings to var ious m inistr ies. The chur ch's tithing, r efer r ed to as benevolences, suppor ts or ganizations her e in Centr al Ohio as w ell as national and inter national m inistr ies. For exam ple, one of our lar ger donations goes to suppor t RCA M issionar ies in their effor ts to shar e the love of Chr ist ar ound the w or ld. So r est assur ed that w hen you give to New Hope Chur ch, your gifts ar e tr eated as scr iptur e teaches, w ith a tithe given back to God. Each of us has to answ er for our selves how w e give. Per sonally, I have found that som e view giving as "a debt ow ed," but as w e r ead the scr iptur es it tr uly is "a seed sow n!" We have had a fabulous star t to our school year ! Septem ber is such a busy m onth getting to know all our new fr iends and fam ilies. The childr en ar e adjusting and w e ar e all having fun. The hugs and giggles in the hallw ays ar e pr iceless. We cur r ently have 216 childr en enr olled in our pr ogr am , and m any classr oom s ar e at full capacity. This fall w e w ill be taking a field tr ip to Lehner ?s Pum pkin Far m . We discover ed this far m last year. They offer a gr eat pr ogr am for pr eschooler s, and they get a hayr ide to the pum pkin patch! In ear ly October w e w ill have Pictur e Day, and ar e excited to have Squ i er Ph ot ogr aphy back again to take our childr en's school pictur es.
