In 1958 I w as a fir st gr ade student in M r s. For sbeck?s class at Nassau Str eet Elem entar y School in Pr inceton, New Jer sey. M r s. For sbeck had us m em or ize the Lor d?s Pr ayer and other passages fr om the Bible (yes, those w er e the days befor e M adalyn M ur r ay O?Har e and these exer cises w er e per m itted in public schools). I distinctly r ecall that the fir st passage w e had to m em or ize w as Psalm 100, in the King Jam es Ver sion no less. The psalm ist w r ites: M ake a joyful noise unto the Lord, all ye lands.

Serve the Lord with gladness: come before his presence with singing.

Know ye that the Lord he is God: it is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture.

Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: be thankful unto him, and bless his name.

For the Lord is good; his mercy is everlasting; and his truth endureth to all generations.

Psalm 100 is a song of Isr ael that is per m eated w ith gr atitude. How fitting to r ead this psalm as w e begin a m onth dur ing w hich our thoughts natur ally tur n to gr atitude as w e obser ve Thanksgiving.

I w as speaking w ith an acquaintance r ecently and asked how he w as doing. His r esponse w as, ?I can?t com plain although I often do.? We both acknow ledged that, even though ther e is a pr opensity to occasionally com plain, the tr uth is that w e both ar e better off than m uch of the w or ld?s population. You w ho r ead this colum n and I ar e r ichly blessed by God. We have so m uch for w hich to be gr ateful.

We have had an am azing fall thus far in youth m inistr y. We ar e gr ow ing as a gr oup in num ber s, in our r elationships, and in our faith. It is an exciting tim e in the life of our youth at New Hope.

Although paintball and a Buckeye par ty ar e behind us, ther e ar e m any things planned for both the youth AND par ents in Novem ber. Please see the "save the date" below and m ar k your calendar s!

I w ant to extend a special thank you to the Schultz's for opening their hom e to our youth for our Buckeye par ties; Paul Woodr uff, Leann Siddell, and M ar k Allen for par tner ing w ith m e in m inistr y and teaching our Sunday School class; to Amy Br obst for cr eating invitations for m e in a m om ent's notice; and Heather and JR Ker n, M elissa and Steve Over ber g, Stephanie Ver m eer , Kar a and Tr ent Har tr anft, Car oline and Jim DeLucas, Sar ah Palsm a and Amy again for all of your help and endless suppor t of the youth at New Hope.

We have alr eady had the fir efighter s visit for fir e safety w eek . They let us clim b thr ough the tr uck and w e w er e able to check out ALL their cool gear that helps keep them safe w hile they ar e helping us!

Our Kinder gar ten class m et their safety standar ds w hen Lieutenant Helder cam e to visit. The childr en w er e able to explor e tw o police cr uiser s and a helicopter w hile lear ning about safety. Thank you Lieutenant Helder for m aking it such a special exper ience.

Our pr eschool classes tr aveled to Lehner ?s Far m to enjoy a hayr ide and pick pum pkins. W hat a gr eat tr ip, the w eather w as per fect!

We also conducted our vision scr eenings this m onth. Pr event Blindness offer s fr ee tr ainings and equipm ent for pr ivate school staff so that w e can scr een for ear ly w ar ning signs of vision im pair m ents.

We finished October w ith Hallow een fun and our Hallow een Par ades. The childr en alw ays enjoy par ading thr ough the halls and into the chur ch offices to tr ick or tr eat befor e heading to their classr oom s for their par ties.

The teacher s ar e w or king har d to pr epar e for Par ent Teacher confer ences in Novem ber. We look for w ar d to shar ing all the exciting things that each child has accom plished.

Some sayings are hard because they are difficult to understand, others because the demands they make on us are only too clear. In this study, we?ll grapple with a few of these sayings.
